श्री शुक उवाच -
Shri Shuka said -
एवं पितरि सम्प्रवृत्ते तदनुशासने वर्तमान आग्नीध्रो जम्बू द्वीपौकस: प्रजा औरसवद्धर्मावेक्षमाण: पर्यगोपायत् ॥१॥
एवम् पितरि सम्प्रवृत्ते
in this manner, father being engaged
तत्-अनुशासने वर्तमान:
his command following
आग्नीध्र: जम्बू द्वीपौकस:
Agnidhra, in Jamboo Dweepa living
प्रजा: औरस-वत्-धर्म-
the people, progeny like, righteousness
अवेक्षमाण: पर्यगोपायत्
observing, protected
When his father was in this manner engaged in devotion, Agnidhra, following his instructions, protected the people living in Jamboo Dweepa, as his own progeny, in observation of righteousness.
स च कदाचित्पितृलोककाम: सुरवरवनिताक्रीडाचलद्रोण्यां भगवन्तं विश्वसृजां पतिमाभृतपरिचर्योपकरण आत्मैकाग्र्येण तपस्व्याराधयाम्बभूव ॥२॥
स: च कदाचित्-पितृलोक-काम:
he and once, in the manes' realm desiring (a place)
सुरवर-वनिता-क्रीडा-अचल-द्रोण्याम्
the celestial dames' pleasure (ground), Mount Mandaara
भगवन्तम् विश्वसृजाम् पतिम्-
The Ruler of the lords of creation foremost (Brahmaa)
आभृत-परिचर्या-उपकरण
collecting worship requisites
आत्म-ऐकाग्र्येण
with mind's concentration
तपस्वी-आराधयाम्-बभूव
and asceticism, worship began
Once, he desired to have a place in the abode of the manes', and so desiring a worthy son, he collected all the requisit articles of worship, and on the Mount Mandaara, the sporting ground of the celestial damsels, worshipped the glorious Brahmaa, the foremost of the lords of creation, with full concentration of mind and asceticism.
तदुपलभ्य भगवानादिपुरुष: सदसि गायन्तीं पूर्वचित्तिं नामाप्सरसमभियापयामास ॥३॥

When the glorious first person, Brahmaa came to know of this, he sent down the celestial nymph named Poorvachitti, who used to sing in his court down to him, Agneedhra.
सा च तदाश्रमोपवनमतिरमणीयं विविधनिविडविटपिविटपनिकरसंश्लिष्टपुरटलतारूढस्थलविहङ्गममिथुनै: प्रोच्यमानश्रुतिभि: प्रतिबोध्यमानसलिलकुक्कुटकारण्डवकलहंसादिभिर्विचित्रमुपकूजितामलजलाशयकमलाकरमुपबभ्राम ॥४॥
सा च तत्-आश्रम-

perched peacock pairs
प्रोच्यमान-श्रुतिभि: प्रतिबोध्यमान-
uttered notes, (by which) awakened
सलिलकुक्कुट-कारण्डव-कलहंस-आदिभि:-
waterfowls, ducks, swans and the like
विचित्रम्-उपकूजित-अमल-जलाशय-
charmingly resounded, clean water ponds
कमल-आकरम्-उपबभ्राम
with lotus beds, sauntered about
Close to his hermitage there was a very delightful garden. It was full of clusters of various trees with dense growth, with their boughs entwined with golden creepers. Perched on them were pairs of peacocks who uttered sweet notes which awakened the waterfowls, ducks, swans and the like and the place resounded by their cooings. There was a pond of clear water full of lotus beds. In that garden she sauntered about.
तस्या: सुललितगमनपदविन्यासगतिविलासायाश्चानुपदं खणखणायमानरुचिरचरणाभरणस्वनमुपाकर्ण्य नरदेवकुमार: समाधियोगेनामीलितनयननलिनमुकुलयुगलमीषद्विकचय्य व्यचष्ट ॥५॥

गति-विलासाया:-च-अनुपदम्
pace graceful and on every step
खणखणायमान-रुचिर-चरण-आभरण-
jingling of the pleasant feet ornaments
स्वनम्-उपाकर्ण्य नर-देव-कुमार:
the sound hearing, the royal prince
समाधि-योगेन-आमीलित-नयन-
in the meditation yoga, closed eyes
नलिन-मुकुल-युगलम्-
lotus buds pair
ईषद्-विकचय्य व्यचष्ट
slightly opened, spied (her)
She strode with a charming gait and on every step she took with a graceful pace, the pleasent ornaments on her feet jingled. On hearing that sound, the prince who had his eyes closed in meditation yoga, opened them slightly like a pair of lotus buds and espied her.
तामेवाविदूरे मधुकरीमिव सुमनस उपजिघ्रन्तीं दिविजमनुजमनोनयनाह्लाददुघैर्गतिविहारव्रीडाविनयावलोकसुस्वराक्षरावयवैर्मनसि नृणां कुसुमायुधस्य विदधतीं विवरं निजमुखविगलितामृतासवसहासभाषणामोदमदान्धमधुकरनिकरोपरोधेन द्रुतपदविन्यासेन वल्गुस्पन्दनस्तनकलशकबरभाररशनां देवीं तदवलोकनेन विवृतावसरस्य भगवतो मकरध्वजस्य वशमुपनीतो जडवदिति होवाच ॥६॥
ताम्-एव-अविदूरे मधुकरीम्-इव

आह्लाद-दुघै:-गति-विहार-व्रीडा-

विनय-अवलोक-सुस्वर-अक्षर-अवयवै:-
modest glance, musical words, charming limbs,
मनसि नृणाम् कुसुम-आयुधस्य
in the minds of men, of the flowers weaponed
विदधतीम् विवरम्

निज-मुख-विगलित-
from (her) own mouth emitting
अमृत-आसव-सहास-भाषण-
nectar sweet, smilingly speaking
आमोद-मद-अन्ध-
inebriating as wine, blinded
मधुकर-निकर-उपरोधेन
by bees' swarms assailed
द्रुत-पद-विन्यासेन
with quick steps taking
वल्गु-स्पन्दन-स्तन-कलश-
charming shivering of the breast pots
कबर-भार-रशनाम् देवीम्
tuft of hairs' weight and girdle, the gentle lady
तत्-अवलोकनेन विवृत-अवसरस्य
by her glancing, availed the chance
भगवत: मकरध्वजस्य वशम्-उपनीत:
Lord Cupid's influence taken into
जडवत्-इति ह-उवाच
dunce like indeed said
She, like a female honey bee, was smelling the flowers, not very far away from him. She delighted the mind and eyes of the gods and men by her gait, stroll and bashful modest glances, musical words and charming limbs. She was carving a passage for the Love God Cupid, whose weapons are flowers, by her necter like sweet words which she spoke with a smile, inebriating as wine, which blinded men's minds. Assailed by the swarm of bees, and the weight of her pot like breasts, the tuft of hair and the girdle, she took quick steps with a charming shiver, as the gentle lady glanced, Cupid availed of the chance, and influenced him, who like a dunce spoke to her thus.......
का त्वं चिकीर्षसि च किं मुनिवर्य शैले मायासि कापि भगवत्परदेवताया: ।
विज्ये बिभर्षि धनुषी सुहृदात्मनोऽर्थे किं वा मृगान्मृगयसे विपिने प्रमत्तान् ॥७॥
का त्वम् चिकीर्षसि च किम्
who are you, intend and what
मुनिवर्य शैलेमाया-असि का-अपि
O great sage! On the mountain, Maayaa are you some kind
भगवत्-पर-देवताया:
of Lord The Supreme Deity
विज्ये बिभर्षि धनुषी
string less carry two bows
सुहृद्-आत्मन:-अर्थे किम् वा
O Friend! For self protection, what or
मृगान्-मृगयसे विपिने प्रमत्तान्
game are in search for in the forest intoxicated
O Great sage! Who are you? And what do you intend to do on the mountain? Are you some kind of Maayaa of the all-powerful Supreme Diety? What for do you carry two stringless bows (eye-brows)? Are they for your own protection or, in the forest, are you in search for intoxicated game (like me) ?
बाणाविमौ भगवत: शतपत्रपत्रौ शान्तावपुङ्खरुचिरावतितिग्मदन्तौ ।
कस्मै युयुंक्षसि वने विचरन्न विद्म: क्षेमाय नो जडधियां तव विक्रमोऽस्तु ॥८॥
बाणौ-इमौ भगवत:
arrows these two, of your gracious self
शतपत्र-पत्रौ शान्तौ-अपुङ्ख-
two lotus petals like, are gentle without hilt
रुचिरौ-अति-तिग्म-दन्तौ
lovely very sharp, at the (two) ends
कस्मै युयुंक्षसि
on whom wish to charge
वने विचरन्-न विद्म:
in the forest roaming, (we) do not know
क्षेमाय न: जड-धियाम्
for well-being, of ours the dull-witted
तव विक्रम:-अस्तु
your effort may be
These two arrows of your gracious self, are like two petals of the lotus, which are very lovely and gentle, and though without hilt are very sharp at the ends. We do not know on whom you intend to charge them, roaming about as you are in this forest. We wish that this effort of yours may be for the benifit for us, the dull witted.
शिष्या इमे भगवत: परित: पठन्ति गायन्ति साम सरहस्यमजस्रमीशम् ।
युष्मच्छिखाविलुलिता: सुमनोऽभिवृष्टी: सर्वे भजन्त्यृषिगणा इव वेदशाखा: ॥९॥
शिष्या: इमे भगवत: परित:
pupils these, your gracious self surrounding
पठन्ति गायन्ति साम
chanting and singing, Saamaveda
सरहस्यम्-अजस्रम्-ईशम्
with deep teachings, incessantly of The Lord
युष्मत्-शिखा-विलुलिता: सुमन:-
from your hair locks displaced flowers
अभिवृष्टी: सर्वे भजन्ति-
showering, all (the bees) are resorting to,
ऋषिगणा: इव वेद-शाखा:
the groups of sages, like the Veda's branches
These bees, pupils of your gracious self, incessently chant and sing the Saamaveda, glorifying The Lord. The displaced flowers shower from the locks of your hair and the bees resort to them like the groups of sages resort to the different branches of the Vedas.
वाचं परं चरणपञ्जरतित्तिरीणां ब्रह्मन्नरूपमुखरां शृणवाम तुभ्यम् ।
लब्धा कदम्बरुचिरङ्कविटङ्कबिम्बे यस्यामलातपरिधि: क्व च वल्कलं ते ॥१०॥
वाचम् परम् चरण-पञ्जर-
sound only, feet cages
तित्तिरीणाम् ब्रह्मन्-
of the anklets, O sage!
अरूप-मुखराम् शृणवाम तुभ्यम्
formless sounding, which is heard of yours
लब्धा कदम्ब रुचिर-अङ्क-विटङ्क
have got Kadamba beautiful circular hips
बिम्बे यस्याम्-अलातपरिधि:
in the shadow of which is a red circle
क्व च वल्कलम् ते
where and is bark dress yours
O sage! There in the sound of the anklets, we hear the notes of the formless birds as though locked in the cages of the anklets. How have you got the beautiful Kadamba like circular hips the shadow of which has a circular red hue. Where is your bark dress?
किं सम्भृतम् रुचिरयोर्द्विज शृङ्गयोस्ते मध्ये कृशो वहसि यत्र दृशि: श्रिता मे ।
पङ्कोऽरुण: सुरभिरात्मविषाण ईदृग् येनाश्रमं सुभग मे सुरभीकरोषि ॥११॥
किम् सम्भृतम् रुचिरयो:-द्विज
what is treasured in the two beautiful, O Braahmana!
शृङ्गयो:-ते मध्ये कृश:
horns your, the middle (waist) is slender
वहसि यत्र दृशि: श्रिता मे
carry where glance rests mine
पङ्क:-अरुण: सुरभि:-
paste (smeared) red scented on
आत्म-विषाणे ईदृग्
(your) own horns such,
येन-आश्रमम् सुभग
by which the hermitage, O Beautiful One!
मे सुरभी-करोषि
mine is perfumed
O Braahmana! What is treasured in your two beautiful horns? Your middle, the waist, is slender, where you carry them and where my gaze is fixed. O Beautiful One! What red paste have you smeared on your horns which renders my hermitage perfumed?
लोकं प्रदर्शय सुहृत्तम तावकं मे यत्रत्य इत्थमुरसावयवावपूर्वौ ।
अस्मद्विधस्य मनौन्नयनो बिभर्ति बह्वद्भुतं सरसराससुधादि वक्त्रे ॥१२॥
लोकम् प्रदर्शय सुहृत्तम
region show, O Good Friend!
तावकम् मे यत्रत्य: इत्थम्-
of yours to me, from where such
उरसा-अवयवौ-अपूर्वौ
on the chest limbs unique
अस्मत्-विधस्य मन:-उन्नयन:
our like (peoples') minds agitates
बिभर्ति बहु-अद्भुतम्
and carries many strange
सरस-रास-सुधा-आदि वक्त्रे
sweet (words) amorous nectar like in the mouth
O Good Friend! Show me that region of yours where people have such unique limbs on their chests, which agitate the minds of people like me. You also carry many strange sweet amorous nectar like words in your mouth.
का वाऽऽत्मवृत्तिरदनाद्-हविरङ्ग वाति विष्णो: कलास्यनिमिषोन्मकरौ च कर्णौ ।
उद्विग्नमीनयुगलं द्विजपङ्क्तिशोचिरासन्नभृङ्गनिकरं सर इन्मुखं ते ॥१३॥
का वा-आत्म-वृत्ति:-
what or your own food
अदनात्-हवि:-अङ्ग वाति
by eating, of sacrificial oblations' aroma
विष्णो: कला-असि-
of Vishnu a ray part are you
अनिमिष-उन्मकरौ च कर्णौ
unwinking alligators (earrings) and in the ears
उद्विग्न-मीन-युगलम्
leaping fish pair (like eyes bewildered)
द्विज-पङ्क्ति-शोचि:-
teeth rows swan (like)
आसन्न-भृङ्ग-निकरम्
the hair tuft bees' swarms (like)
सर इन्-मुखम् ते
lake like face your
What food do you eat from which the aroma of the sacrificial oblation emerges? Are you a ray part of Vishnu because your earings of unwinking pair of aligators are like His. Your face is like a lake with bewildered eyes like a pair of leaping fish, the rows of teeth like swans, and the tuft of hair like a swarm of bees.
योऽसौ त्वया करसरोजहत: पतङ्गो दिक्षु भ्रमन् भ्रमत एजयतेऽक्षिणी मे ।
मुक्तं न ते स्मरसि वक्रजटावरूथं कष्टोऽनिलो हरति लम्पट एष नीवीम् ॥१४॥
य:-असौ त्वया

कर-सरोज-हत: पतङ्ग:

दिक्षु भ्रमन् भ्रमत:
in all directions knocked about
एजयते-अक्षिणी मे
rolls eyes mine
मुक्तम् न ते स्मरसि

वक्र-जटा-वरूथम्
curly locks braid
कष्ट:-अनिल:
alas the breeze
हरति लम्पट: एष: नीवीम्
lifts mischievous this, lower garment
This ball that you hit by your lotus hands, is knocked about in all directions and so my eyes roll around in confusion. You do not care for your dis-shevelled curly hair braid, and alas! This mischievious breeze lifts up your lower garment.
रूपं तपोधन तपश्चरतां तपोघ्नं ह्येतत्तु केन तपसा भवतोपलब्धम् ।
चर्तुं तपोऽर्हसि मया सह मित्र मह्यं किं वा प्रसीदति स वै भवभावनो मे ॥१५॥
रूपम् तपोधन
this beauty, O Ascetic!
तप:-चरताम् तपोघ्नम्
Asceticism practitioners' austerities wrecks
हि-एतत्-तु केन तपसा
indeed this of course, by which austerity
भवता-उपलब्धम्
by you gained
चर्तुम् तप:-अर्हसि
to practice austerities are capable
मया सह मित्र
me with O Friend!
मह्यम् किम् वा
for me what or
प्रसीदति स: वै
pleased he surely
भवभावन: मे
the world creator on me
O Ascetic! Indeed this beauty is of course wrecking for the austerities practiced by the asceticism practitioners. By practicing which austerity have you gained this? O Friend you are capable of performing austerities with me. Or is it that being pleased with me the creator of the world, Brahma has sent you for me?
न त्वां त्यजामि द्विजदेवदत्तं यस्मिन्मनो दृगपि नो न वियाति लग्नम् ।
मां चारुशृङ्ग्यर्हसि नेतुमनुव्रतं ते चित्तं यत: प्रतिसरन्तु शिवा: सचिव्य: ॥१६॥
न त्वाम् त्यजामि
not you shall (I) forgo
द्विजदेव-दत्तम्
by Brahmaa conferred
यस्मिन्-मन: दृग्-अपि न:
in whom (my) mind, eyes also our
न वियाति लग्नम्
do not turn away, fixed
माम् चारु-शृङ्गि-
my Beautiful breasted!
अर्हसि नेतुम्-अनुव्रतम्
capable are to take me, your orderly
ते चित्तम् यत: प्रतिसरन्तु
your mind where, may follow
शिवा: सचिव्य:
(these) obedient companions
I will not forgo you, as you have been conferred on me by Brahmaa, and in whom my mind and eyes are fixed, and so they do not turn away. O my beautiful breasted one! You may be pleased to take me, your humble servant, where ever you fancy. These obedient companions may also follow.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shri Shuka said -
इति ललनानुनयातिविशारदो ग्राम्यवैदग्ध्यया परिभाषया तां विबुधवधूं विबुधमतिरधिसभाजयामास ॥
इति ललना-
thus the young lady
अनुनय-अति-विशारद:
in pleasing very expert
ग्राम्य-वैदग्ध्यया परिभाषया
by sensual expressions language
ताम् विबुध-वधूम्
that celestial damsel
विबुध-मति:-
with god like intelligence
अधिसभाजयामास
propitiated with regard
Thus, the prince Agneedhra, an expert in pleasing people, by his god like intelligence and by his expressions of sensuous language, gave the celestial damsel great regard and propitiated her.
सा च ततस्तस्य वीरयूथपतेर्बुद्धिशीलरूपवय:श्रियौदार्येण पराक्षिप्तमनास्तेन सहायुतायुतपरिवत्सरोपलक्षणं कालं जम्बूद्वीपपतिना भौमस्वर्गभोगान् बुभुजे ॥१८॥
सा च तत:-तस्य वीर-यूथपते:-

बुद्धि-शील-रूप-वय:-
intelligence, amiability, handsomeness, youth,
श्रिया-औदार्येण पराक्षिप्त-मना:-
splendour and nobility, captive minded
तेन सह-अयुत-अयुत-परिवत्सर:-
him with, thousands and thousands of years
उपलक्षणम् कालम्
amounting to time
जम्बूद्वीप-पतिना
with the Jamboo Dweepa's lord
भौम-स्वर्ग-भोगान् बुभुजे
earthly and celestial pleasures, enjoyed
Her mind was captivated by the intelligence, amiability, handsomeness, youth, splendour and nobility of the leader of the valorous. She then, with the lord of Jamboo Dweep, enjoyed the earthly and celestial pleasures for time ammounting to thousands and thousands of years.
तस्यामु ह वा आत्मजान् स राजवर आग्नीध्रो नाभिकिम्पुरुषहरिवर्षेलावृतरम्यकहिरण्मयकुरुभद्राश्वकेतुमालसंज्ञान्नव पुत्रानजनयत् ॥१९॥
तस्याम्-उ ह वा आत्मजान्
through her, it is said, or own sons

that foremost of the kings, Agnidhra
नाभि-किम्पुरुष-
Naabhi, Kimpurusha,
हरिवर्ष-इलावृत-रम्यक-
Harivarsha, Ilavrita, Ramyaka,
हिरण्मय-कुरु-
Hiranmaya, Kuru,
भद्राश्व-केतुमाल-
Bhadraashwa, Ketumaala
संज्ञान्-नव पुत्रान्-अजनयत्
named nine sons begot
It is said that through her, that foremost of the kings, Aagneedhra, begot nine sons, named, Naabhi, Kimpurusha, Harivarsha, Ilavrita, Ramyaka, Hiranmaya, Kuru, Bhadraashwa and Ketumaala.
सा सूत्वाथ सुतान्नवानुवत्सरं गृह एवापहाय पूर्वचित्तिर्भूय एवाजं देवमुपतस्थे ॥२०॥
सा सूत्वा-अथ सुतान्-
she delivering then sons
नव-अनुवत्सरम्
nine each year
गृहे एव-अपहाय
in the house only leaving
पूर्वचित्ति:-भूय: एव-
Poorvachitti, again also
अजम् देवम्-उपतस्थे
the birth less supreme god served
Poorvachitti, having given birth to nine sons every consequitive year, left them in the house of Aagneedhra and she also again went and served the birthless supreme god, Brahmaa.
आग्नीध्रसुतास्ते मातुरनुग्रहादौत्पत्तिकेनैव संहननबलोपेता: पित्रा विभक्ता आत्मतुल्यनामानि यथाभागं जम्बूद्वीपवर्षाणि बुभुजु: ॥२१॥
आग्नीध्र-सुता:-ते
Agneedhra's sons, they

were well-built and strong

जम्बूद्वीप-वर्षाणि बुभुजु:
Jamboo Dweepa's divisions, ruled
The sons of Aagneedhra, were well-built and strong from birth by the grace of their celestial mother. Their father alloted to them portions of Jamboo Dweepa, named after their own names, those divisions they ruled.
आग्नीध्रो राजातृप्त: कामानामप्सरसमेवानुदिनमधिमन्यमानस्तस्या: सलोकतां श्रुतिभिरवारुन्ध यत्र पितरो मादयन्ते ॥२२॥
आग्नीध्रो राजा-
Agnidhra, the king
अतृप्त: कामानाम्-
not sated with sense pleasures
अप्सरसम्-एव-
the celestial nymph only
अनुदिनम्-अधिमन्यमान:-
every day thought of
तस्या: सलोकताम्
her same heaven
श्रुतिभि:-अवारुन्ध
by the Vedas (described) attained to
यत्र पितर: मादयन्ते
where the manes are delighted
The King Aagneedhra, who was not sated of sensuous pleasures, every day thought of that celestial nymph only. He attained the same heaven where she was, which is described of in the Vedas, and where the manes live in delight.
सम्परेते पितरि नव भ्रातरो मेरुदुहितर्मेरुदेवीं प्रतिरूपामुग्रदंष्ट्रीं लतां रम्यां श्यामां नारीं भद्रां देववीतिमिति संज्ञा नवोदवहन् ॥२३॥
सम्परेते पितरि नव भ्रातर:
on demise of father, the nine brothers
मेरु-दुहितृ:-मेरुदेवीम्
Meru's daughters, Merudevi,
प्रतिरूपाम्-उग्रदंष्ट्रीम् लताम्
Pratiroopaa, Ugradanshtree, Lataa,
रम्याम् श्यामाम् नारीम्
Ramyaa, Shyaamaa, Naaree,
भद्राम् देववीतिम्-इति
Bhadraa, Devaveeti, thus
संज्ञा नव-उदवहन्
named nine, wedded
After the demise of their father, the nine brothers married the nine daughters of Meru, named as Merudevi, Pratiroopaa, Ugradanshtree, Lataa, Ramyaa, Bhadraa, Devaveeti, Shyaamaa, Naaree, Bhadraa and Devaveeti.
