श्री शुक उवाच -
Shri Shuka said -
तत: प्राचेतसोऽसिक्न्यामनुनीत: स्वयम्भुवा ।

षष्टिं सञ्जनयामासदुहितृ: पितृवत्सला: ॥१॥


तत: प्राचेतस:-असिक्न्याम्-
then Praachetas (Daksha) from Askini
अनुनीत: स्वयम्भुवा
requested by Brahmaa
षष्टिम् सञ्जनयामास-
sixty produced
दुहितृ: पितृ-वत्सला:
daughters, affectionate to father

Then, Daksha, the son of Prachetas, requested and prevailed upon by Brahmaa, begot sixty daughters from Askini, who were affectionate towards their father.


दश धर्माय कायेन्दोर्द्विषट् त्रिणव दत्तवान् ।

भूताङ्गिर: कृशाश्वेभ्यो द्वे द्वे तार्क्ष्याय चापरा: ॥२॥


दश धर्माय काय-इन्दो:-
ten to Dharma, to Kashyapa, Indu (Moon)
द्विषट् त्रिणव दत्तवान्
thirteen, thrice nine (twenty seven) gave
भूताङ्गिर: कृशाश्वेभ्यो
to Bhoota, Angiraa and Krishaashva
द्वे द्वे तार्क्ष्याय चापरा:
two each, to Taarkshya (Kashyapa) and the rest

He gave away ten of his daughters to Dharma, thirteen to Kashyapa , twenty seven to Moon, two each to Bhoota, Angiraa and Krishaashva, and the rest to Taarkshya, i.e. Kashyapa.


नामधेयान्यमूषां त्वं सापत्यानां च मे शृणु ।

यासां प्रसूतिप्रसवैर्लोका आपूरितास्त्रय: ॥३॥


नामधेयानि-अमूषाम् त्वम्
names of them you
सापत्यानाम् च मे शृणु
along with their off springs and, from me hear
यासाम् प्रसूति प्रसवै:-
from whose children (and) descendents,
लोका: आपूरिता:-त्रय:
worlds were filled three

Now, from me, you hear the names of them and their off springs, from whose children and descendents the three worlds were filled.


भानुर्लम्बा ककुब्जामिर्विश्वा साध्या मरुत्वती ।

वसुर्मुहूर्ता सङ्कल्पा धर्मपत्न्य: सुतान् शृणु ॥४॥


भानु:-लम्बा ककुभ्-जामि:-
Bhaanu, Lambaa, Kakubha, Jaami,
विश्वा साध्या-मरुत्वती
Vishva, Saadhyaa, Marutvatee,
वसु:-मुहूर्ता सङ्कल्पा
Vasu, Muhurta, Sankalpaa
धर्मपत्न्य: सुतान् शृणु
were Dharma's wives, of the sons, hear

Bhaanu, Lambaa, Kakubha, Jaami, Vishva, Saadhyaa, Marutvatee, Vasu, Muhurta, Sankalpaa were Dharma's wives. Hear the sons' names.


भानोस्तु देवऋषभ इन्द्रसेनस्ततो नृप ।

विद्योत आसील्लम्बायास्ततश्च स्तनयित्नव: ॥५॥


भानो:-तु देवऋषभ:
from Bhaanu indeed Devarishabha
इन्द्रसेन:-तत: नृप
Indrasena from him, O king!
विद्योत: आसीत्-लम्बाया:-
Vidyota was from Lambaa,
तत:-च स्तनयित्नव:
from him and the (spirit of) clouds

O King! from Bhaanu indeed Devarishabha was born, from him Indrasena, Vidyota was Lambaa's son, and from him were born the spirit of the clouds.


ककुभ: सङ्कटस्तस्य कीकटस्तनयो यत: ।

भुवो दुर्गाणि जामेय: स्वर्गो नन्दिस्ततोऽभवत् ॥६॥

Kakubha son was Sankata his (son)
कीकट:-तनय: यत:
Keekata sons from whom
भुव: दुर्गाणि जामेय:
of the earth's the fortresses (the spirit), Jaamee's son
स्वर्ग: नन्दि:-तत:-अभवत्
Swarga, Nandi from him was born

Kakubha son was Sankata, his son Keekata, from whom the sons born were the spirit of the fortresses on earth. Jaamee's son was Swarga and from Swarga was born Nandi.


विश्वेदेवास्तु विश्वाया अप्रजांस्तान् प्रचक्षते ।

साध्यो गणस्तु साध्याया अर्थसिद्धिस्तु तत्सुत: ॥७॥


विश्वेदेवा:-तु विश्वाया:
Vishvedevaas indeed were Vishva's (sons)
अप्रजान्-तान् प्रचक्षते
issueless they are said to be
साध्य: गण:-तु साध्याया:
the Saadhyaas group indeed, (the sons) of Saadhyaa
अर्थसिद्धि:-तु तत्-सुत:
Arthasiddhi indeed was his son

Vishva's sons were the Vishvedevaas, who are said to be issueless. The group of the Saadhyaas are the sons of Saadhyaa, whose son was Arthasiddhi.


मरुत्वांश्च जयन्तश्च मरुत्वत्यां बभूवतु: ।

जयन्तो वासुदेवांश उपेन्द्र इति यं विदु: ॥८॥


मरुत्वान्-च जयन्त:-च
Marutvaan and Jayanta and
मरुत्वत्याम् बभूवतु:
from Marutvatee were born
जयन्त: वासुदेव-अंश:
Jayanta was Lord Vaasudeva's part (manifestation)
उपेन्द्र: इति यम् विदु:
Upendra thus whom know to be

And, Marutvaan and Jayanta were the sons of Marutvatee. Jayanta was a part manifestation of Lord Vaasudeva, know him as Upendra.


मौहुर्तिका देवगणा मुहुर्तायाश्च जज्ञिरे ।

ये वै फलं प्रयच्छन्ति भूतानां स्वस्वकालजम् ॥९॥


मौहुर्तिका: देवगणा:
Mauhoortikaa, the gods' group
मुहुर्ताया:-च जज्ञिरे
of Muhurta and were born
ये वै फलम् प्रयच्छन्ति
who certainly the fruits give
भूतानाम् स्व-स्व-कालजम्
to living beings, in their own time performed (actions)

Muhurta sons were born the groups of gods called Mauhoortikaa. They certainly dispense the fruits of the actions to the living beings for the actions performed by them in the division of time presided over by each of them.


सङ्कल्पायाश्च सङ्कल्प काम: सङ्कल्पज: स्मृत: ।

वसवोऽष्टौ वसो: पुत्रास्तेषां नामानि मे शृणु ॥१०॥

Kaama of Sankalpaa born, is remembered as
वसव:-अष्टौ वसो: पुत्रा:-
Vasus eight, of Vasu the sons
तेषाम् नामानि मे शृणु
their names from me hear

Sankalpaa was born as the son of Sankalpaa, whose son is remembered to be as Kaama. The eight Vasus, a group of gods are the sons of Vasu, their names hear from me.


द्रोण: प्राणो ध्रुवोऽर्कोऽग्निर्दोषो वसुर्विभावसु: ।

द्रोणस्याभिमते: पत्न्या हर्षशोकभयादय: ॥११॥


द्रोण: प्राण: ध्रुव:-अर्क:-
Drona, Praana, Dhruva, Arka,
अग्नि:-दोष: वसु:-विभावसु:
Agni, Dosha, Vasu, Vibhaavasu
द्रोणस्य-अभिमते: पत्न्या
of Drona Abhimati wife
हर्ष-शोक-भय-आदय:
Harsha, Shoka, Bhaya and others

They are, Drona, Praana, Dhruva, Arka, Agni, Dosha, Vasu, Vibhaavasu. From Drona's wife Abhimati, were born Harsha, Shoka, Bhaya and others, the deities presiding over the emotions.


प्राणस्योर्जस्वती भार्या सह आयु: पुरोजव: ।

ध्रुवस्य भार्या धरणिरसूत विविधा: पुर: ॥१२॥


प्राणस्य-ऊर्जस्वती भार्या
Praana's Oorjaswatee the wife,
सह आयु: पुरोजव:
Saha, Aayu, Purojava, (the sons)
ध्रुवस्य भार्या धरणि:-
Dhruva's wife Dharani
असूत विविधा: पुर:
bore the various (ditties of) towns and cities

Oorjaswatee was the wife of Praana, whose sons were Saha, Aayu and Purojava. Dhruva's wife Dharani, bore as sons the ditties of the various towns and cities.


अर्कस्य वासना भार्यापुत्रास्तर्षादय: स्मृता: ।

अग्नेर्भार्या वसोर्धारा पुत्रा द्रविणकादय: ॥१३॥


अर्कस्य वासना भार्या
of Arka, Vaasanaa the wife
पुत्रा:-तर्ष-आदय: स्मृता:
sons Tarsha and others are known to be
अग्ने:-भार्या वसो:-धारा
of Agni, the wife, of Vasu, Dhaaraa
पुत्रा: द्रविणक-आदय
sons Dravinaka and others

The wife of Arka, was Vaasanaa, whose sons were known to be Tarsha and others. The wife of Agni, the Vasu, was Dhaaraa, and the sons were Dravinaka and others.


स्कन्दश्च कृत्तिकापुत्रो ये विशाखादयस्तत: ।

दोषस्य शर्वरीपुत्र: शिशुमारो हरे: कला ॥१४॥


स्कन्द:-च कृत्तिका-पुत्र:
Skanda and Krittikaa's son
ये विशाखा-आदय:-
those Vishaakhaa and others
तत: दोषस्य शर्वरी-पुत्र:
from him (Skanda), Dosha's wife Sharvari's son
शिशुमार: हरे: कला
Shishumaara is Hari's part

And Skanda was Krittikaa's son, whose Vishaakhaa and other from him, Skanda. Dosha's wife, Sharvari's son was Shishumaara, a part of Shri Hari.


वसोराङ्गिरसीपुत्रो विश्वकर्माऽऽकृतीपति: ।

ततो मनुश्चाक्षुषोऽभूद् विश्वे साध्या मनो: सुता: ॥१५॥


वसो:-आङ्गिरसी-पुत्र:
Vasu's wife Angirasee, her son
विश्वकर्मा-आकृती-पति:
Vishvakarmaa, Aakriti's husband
तत: मनु:-चाक्षुष:-अभूत्
from him Manu Chaakshusha came
विश्वेसाध्या: मनो: सुता:
the Vishvedevaas and Saadhyaas, Manu's sons

From Vasu's wife Angeerasi was the son Vishvakarmaa, the husband of Aakriti's, from him came Chaakshusha Manu. Manu's sons were Vishvedevaas and Saadhyaas.


विभावसोरसूतोषा व्युष्टं रोचिषमातपम् ।

पञ्चयामोऽथ भूतानि येन जाग्रति कर्मसु ॥१६॥


विभावसो:-असूत-उषा
Vibhaavasu's (wife) bore Usha,
व्युष्टम् रोचिषम्-अतपम्
Vyushta, Rochish, Atapa
पञ्चयाम:-अथ भूतानि
Panchayaam then, the living beings
येन जाग्रति कर्मसु
by which keep awake and (engaged) in activities

Vibhaavasu's wife Usha bore the sons Vyushta, Rochish, Atapa, and later Panchayaam, by whom the living beings keep awake and engaged into activities.


सरूपासूत भूतस्य भार्या रुद्रांश्च कोटिश: ।

रैवतोऽजो भीमो वाम उग्रो वृषाकपि: ॥१७॥


सरूपा-असूत भूतस्य भार्या
Saroopaa, bore, Bhoota's wife
रुद्रान् च कोटिश:
the Rudras and crores
रैवत:-अज: भीम:
Raivata, Aja, Bheema,
वाम: उग्र: वृषाकपि:
Vaama, Ugra, Vrishaakapi,

Bhoota's wife Saroopaa bore crores of sons, the Rudras, namely, Raivata, Aja, Bheema, Vaama, Ugra, Vrishaakapi,..


अजैकपादहिर्बुध्न्यो बहुरूपो महानिति ।

रुद्रस्य पार्षदाश्चान्ये घोरा भूतविनायका: ॥१८॥


अजैकपाद्-अहिर्बुध्न्य:
Ajaikapaada, Ahirbundhya,
बहुरूप: महान्-इति
Bahooroopa, and Mahaana, these
रुद्रस्य पार्षदा:-च अन्ये
Rudras the foremost and the others
घोरा: भूत-विनायका:
terrible the Bhootas and Vinaayakas

Ajaikapaada, Ahirbundhya, Bahooroopa and Mahaana are the foremost Rudras, and the other terrible ones, are the Bhootas and the Vinaayakas.


प्रजापतेरङ्गिरस: स्वधा पत्नी पितृनथ ।

अथर्वाङ्गिरसं वेदं पुत्रत्वे चाकरोत् सती ॥१९॥


प्रजापते:-अङ्गिरस:
of Prajaapati Angeerasa
स्वधा-पत्नी पितृन्-अथ
Swadhaa (named) wife, the mane then (and)
अथर्व-अङ्गिरसम् वेदम्
Atharva and Angeerasa Vedas
पुत्रत्वे च-अकरोत् सती
as sons and accepted Satee (the second wife)

Swadhaa, the wife of Angeerasa Prajaapati, accepted the manes as her sons, and his second wife named Satee accepted the Vedas, Atharva and Angeerasa as her sons.


कृशाश्वोऽर्चिषि भार्यायां धूम्रकेशमजीजनत् ।

धिषणायां वेदशिरो देवलं वयुनं मनुम् ॥२०॥


कृशाश्व:-अर्चिषि भार्यायाम्
Krishaashva from Archishi wife
धूम्रकेशम्-अजीजनत्
Dhoomrakesha, gave birth to
धिषणायाम् वेदशिर:
from Dhishanaa, Vedashira,
देवलम् वयुनम् मनुम्
Devala, Vayuna and Manu

Krishaashva, from his wife Archishi begot Dhoomrakesha, and from his wife Dhishanaa begot Vedashira, Devala, Vayuna and Manu.


तार्क्ष्यस्य विनता कद्रू: पतङ्गी यामिनीति च ।

पतङ्ग्यसूत पतगान् यामिनी शलभानथ ॥२१॥


तार्क्ष्यस्य विनता कद्रू:
of Taarkshya (Kashyapa), (were) Vinataa, Kadroo,
पतङ्गी यामिनी-इति च
Patangee, Yaamini, these and
पतङ्गी-असूत पतगान्
Patangee bore birds
यामिनी शलभान्-अथ
Yaaminee moths then

Taarkshya (kashyapa) had four more wives, Vinataa, Kadroo, Patangee, Yaamini, thus. Patangee bore birds and then Yaminee bore moths.


सुपर्णासूत गरुडं साक्षाद् यज्ञेशवाहनम् ।

सूर्यसूतमनूरुं च कद्रूर्नागाननेकश: ॥२२॥


सुपर्ण-असूत गरुडम्
Suparnaa (Vinataa) bore Gaduda
साक्षाद् यज्ञेश-वाहनम्
Himself, Lord Vishnu's vehicle
सूर्य-सूतम्-अनूरुम् च
Sun's charioteer Aruna (an-ooru, thigh less)
कद्रू:-नागान्-अनेकश:
and Kadroo, Naagas numerous

Suparnaa, (Vinataa) gave birth to Gaduda, who is the vehicle of Lord Vishnu Himself, and to Sun's charioteer Aruna, who is thigh less, Kadroo bore numerous Naagas, serpent demons.


कृत्तिकादीनि नक्षत्राणीन्दो: पत्न्यस्तु भारत ।

दक्षशापात् सोऽनपत्यस्तासु यक्ष्मग्रहार्दित: ॥२३॥


कृत्तिका-आदीनि नक्षत्राणि-
Krittikaa and other lunar mansions
इन्दो: पत्न्य:-तु भारत
of the Moon wives indeed, O Pareekshit!
दक्ष-शापात् स:-अनपत्य:-
by Daksha's curse, he was issue-less
तासु यक्ष्म-ग्रह-अर्दित:
from them, consumption devilish (disease) plagued

O Pareekshita! The Moon had Krittikaa and the other lunar mansions as his wives, but he was issue-less from all of them, because of the curse of Daksha, by which he was plagued by the devilish disease of consumption.


पुन: प्रसाद्य तं सोम: कला लेभे क्षये दिता: ।

शृणु नामानि लोकानां मातृणां शङ्कराणि च ॥२४॥


पुन: प्रसाद्य तम् सोम:
again by pleasing him (Daksha), Moon
कला लेभे
the digits (of light) (regained)
क्षये दिता:
(when) waning (which were) lessened
शृणु नामानि लोकानाम्
hear the names of the worlds'
मातृणाम् शङ्कराणि च
mothers' auspicious and

The Moon had regained the digits of light which were reduced by Daksha's curse, by pleasing him again. Now, hear the auspicious names of the mothers of the worlds.


अथ कश्यपपत्नीनां यत्प्रसूतमिदं जगत् ।

अदितिर्दितिर्दनु: काष्ठा सरिष्टा सुरसा इला ॥२५॥


अथ कश्यप-पत्नीनाम्
now Kashyapa's wives
यत्-प्रसूतम्-इदम् जगत्
from whom was born this world
अदिति:-दिति:-दनु: काष्ठा
Aditi, Diti, Danu, Kaashthaa,
सरिष्टा सुरसा इला
Sarishtaa, Surasaa, Ilaa

Now, hear the names of the wives of Kashyapa, from whom this world was born, namely, Aditi, Diti, Danu, Kaashthaa, Sarishtaa, Surasaa, Ilaa.


मुनि: क्रोधवशा ताम्रा सुरभि: सरमा तिमि: ।

तिमेर्यादोगणा आसन् श्वापदा: सरमासुता: ॥२६॥


मुनि: क्रोधवशा ताम्रा
Muni, Krodhavashaa, Taamraa,
सुरभि: सरमा तिमि:
Surabhi, Saramaa, Timi,
तिमे:-यादोगणा: आसन्
of Timi the aquatic creatures were
श्वापदा: सरमा-सुता:
wild animals were Saramaa's sons

And Muni, Krodhavashaa, Taamraa, Surabhi, Saramaa, Timi. The species of aquatic creatures were born of Timi, and the wild animals were the sons of Saramaa.


सुरभेर्महिषागावो ये चान्ये द्विशफा नृप ।

ताम्राया: श्येनगृध्राद्या मुनेरप्सरसां गणा: ॥२७॥


सुरभे:-महिषा: गाव:
of Surabhi buffaloes cows
ये च-अन्ये द्विशफा नृप
those and others, cloven hoofed, O King!
ताम्राया: श्येन-गृध्र-आद्या:
of Taamra the hawk, vultures and others
मुने:-अप्सरसाम् गणा:
of Muni the celestial nymphs’ hosts

Of Surabhi were born the buffaloes, the cows, and beasts with cloven hoofs. O King! Of Taamraa were born the hawk, the vultures and other birds, while the progeny of Muni are the hosts of the celestial nymphs.


दन्दशूकादय: सर्पा राजन् क्रोधवशात्मजा: ।

इलाया भूरुहा: सर्वे यातुधानाश्च सौरसा: ॥२८॥


दन्दशूका-आदय: सर्पा:
poisonous reptiles, snakes,
राजन् क्रोधवशा-आत्मजा:
O King! of Krodhavashaa the progeny
इलाया: भूरुहा: सर्वे
of Ila the vegetation all
यातुधाना:-च सौरसा:
the Raakshasas and Surasaa.

O King! The reptiles, poisonous snakes, are the progeny of Krodhavashaa, the entire vegetation is the progeny of Ila and the Raakshasas are born of Surasaa.


अरिष्टायाश्च गन्धर्वा: काष्ठाया द्विशफेतरा: ।

सुता दनोरेकषष्टिस्तेषां प्राधानिकाञ्शृणु ॥२९॥


अरिष्टाया:-च गन्धर्वा:
of Arishtaa and the Gandharvas (celestial musicians)
काष्ठाया: द्विशफेतरा: सुता:
of Kaashthaa, of uncloven hoofs the sons
दनो:-एकषष्टि:-
of Danu sixty-one
तेषाम् प्राधानिकान्-शृणु
of them the prominent hear

Aristae's progeny are the Gandharvas, the celestial musicians, the beasts with uncloven hoofs (horses, donkeys) are the sons of Kaashthaa, Danu has sixty-one, hear of the prominent ones of them.


द्विमूर्धा शम्बरोऽरिष्टो हयग्रीवो विभावसु: ।

अयोमुख: शङ्कुशिरा: स्वर्भानु: कपिलोऽरुण: ॥३०॥


द्विमूर्धा शम्बर:-अरिष्ट:
Dvimoordhaa, Shambara, Arishta,
हयग्रीव: विभावसु:
Hayagreeva, Vibhaavasu,
अयोमुख: शङ्कुशिरा:
Ayomukha, Shankushiraa,
स्वर्भानु: कपिल:-अरुण:
Swarbhaanu, Kapila, Aruna

They are, Dvimoordhaa, Shambara, Arishta, Hayagreeva, Vibhaavasu, Ayomukha, Shankushiraa, Swarbhaanu, Kapila, and Aruna.


पुलोमा वृषपर्वा च एकचक्रोऽनुतापन: ।

धूम्रकेशो विरूपाक्षो विप्रचित्तिश्च दुर्जय: ॥३१॥


पुलोमा वृषपर्वा च
Pulomaa, Vrishaparva, and
एकचक्र:-अनुतापन:
Ekachakra, Anutaapana,
धूम्रकेश: विरूपाक्ष:

Pulomaa, Vrishaparva, and Ekachakra, Anutaapana, Dhoomrakesha, Viroopaaksha, Viprachitti and Durjaya.


स्वर्भानो: सुप्रभां कन्यामुवाह नमुचि: किल ।

वृषपर्वणस्तु शर्मिष्ठां ययातिर्नहुषो बली ॥३२॥


स्वर्भानो: सुप्रभाम् कन्याम्-
of Svarabhaanoo Suprabhaa the daughter

Namuchi married Suprabhaa, the daughter of Swarabhaanoo, indeed, and the daughter of Vrishaparvana, Sharmishthaa married the mighty Yayaati, the son of Nahusha.


वैश्वानरसुता याश्च चतस्रश्चारुदर्शना: ।

उपदानवी हयशिरा पुलोमा कालका तथा ॥३३॥


वैश्वानर-सुता: या:-च
Vaishvaanara's daughters those and
चतस्र:-चारु-दर्शना:
four, good looking
उपदानवी हयशिरा
Upadaanavee, Hayashiraa,
पुलोमा कालका तथा
Pulomaa, Kaalakaa, and

Vaishwaanara's those four daughters were good looking, namely, Upadaanavee, Hayashiraa, Pulomaa, and Kaalakaa.


उपदानवीं हिरण्याक्ष: क्रतुर्हयशिरां नृप ।

पुलोमां कालकां च द्वे वैश्वानरसुते तु क: ॥३४॥


उपदानवीम् हिरण्याक्ष:
to Upadaanavi (married) Hiranyaaksha
क्रतु:-हयशिराम् नृप
Kratu (married) Hayashiraa, O King!
पुलोमाम् कालकाम् च
Pulomaa Kaalaki and
द्वे वैश्वानर-सुते तु क:
two Vaishvanara daughters, indeed, last

Hiranyaaksha married Upadaanavi, and Kratu married Hayashiraa. O King! Pulomaa and Kaalaki were the last two daughters of Vaishvanara,…..


उपयेमेऽथ भगवान् कश्यपो ब्रह्मचोदित: ।

पौलोमा: कालकेयाश्च दानवा युद्धशालिन: ॥३५॥


उपयेमे-अथ भगवान् कश्यप:
married then, the glorious Kashyapa
ब्रह्म-चोदित:
by Brahmaa prompted
पौलोमा: कालकेया:-च
the Poulomas, Kaalkeyas and
दानवा: युद्ध-शालिन:
were Daanavas, to war given

The glorious Kashyapa, then, married them, when prompted by Brahmaa. The Daanavas Poulomas and the Kaalakeyas were given to war.


तयो: षष्टिसहस्राणि यज्ञघ्नांस्ते पितु: पिता ।

जघान स्वर्गतो राजन्नेक इन्द्रप्रियङ्कर: ॥३६॥


तयो: षष्टिसहस्राणि

यज्ञघ्नान्-ते पितु: पिता
the sacrifice wreckers, your father's father (Arjuna)
जघान स्वर्गत: राजन्-
slew in heaven, O King!
एक: इन्द्र-प्रियङ्कर:
single handed, Indra to please

O King! Your father's father, Arjuna, single handedly, slew sixty thousand of them, the sacrifice wreckers, in heaven, when he had gone there, to please Indra.


विप्रचित्ति सिंहिकायां शतं चैकमजीजनत् ।

राहुज्येष्ठं केतुशतं ग्रहत्वं च उपागत: ॥३७॥


विप्रचित्ति सिंहिकायाम्
Viprachitti from Sinhikaa
शतम् च-एकम्-अजीजनत्
hundred and one (sons) bore
राहु-ज्येष्ठम् केतु-शतम्
Raahu the eldest, Ketu (were) hundred
ग्रहत्वम् च उपागत:
planets and became

Viprachitti begot hundred and one sons from Sinhikaa. The eldest was Raahu and the others were Ketu all of whom became planets.


अथात: श्रूयतां वंशो योऽदितेरनुपूर्वश: ।

यत्र नारायणो देव: स्वांशेनावतरद् विभु: ॥३८॥


अथात: श्रूयताम् वंश:
from now, may you hear of the race
य:-अदिते:-अनुपूर्वश:
which was from Aditi, sequentialy
यत्र नारायण: देव:
where Naaraayana Lord
स्व-अंशेन-अवतरत् विभु:
with own part manifested The Almighty

Now onwards, may you hear about the race from Aditi, sequentially, where, the Almighty Lord Naaraayana himself manifested with His own part form.


विवस्वानर्यमा पूषा त्वष्टाथ सविता भग: ।

धाता विधाता वरुणो मित्र: शक्र उरुक्रम: ॥३९॥


विवस्वान्-अर्यमा पूषा
Vivasvaan, Aryamaa, Pooshaa,
त्वष्टा-अथ सविता भग:
Tvashtaa then Savitaa, Bhaga,
धाता विधाता वरुण:
Dhaataa, Vidhaataa, Varuna,
मित्र: शक्र: उरुक्रम:
Mitra, Shakra, Urukrama

Vivasvaan, Aryamaa, Pooshaa, Tvashtaa then Savitaa, Bhaga, Dhaataa, Vidhaataa, Varuna, Mitra, Shakra, Urukrama.


विवस्वत: श्राद्धदेवं संज्ञासूयत वै मनुम् ।

मिथुनं च महाभागा यमं देवं यमीं तथा ।

सैव भूत्वाथ वडवा नासत्यौ सुषुवे भुवि ॥४०॥


विवस्वत: श्राद्धदेवम्
from Vivasvata, Shraadhaadeva
संज्ञा-असूयत वै मनुम्
Sangyaa bore indeed Manu
मिथुनम् च महाभागा
twins and the highly blessed
यमम् देवम् यमीम् तथा
Yama the god, Yamee and
सा-एव भूत्वा-अथ वडवा
she only becoming then, mare
नासत्यौ सुषुवे भुवि
the Ashwini Kumaaras, bore on earth

The highly blessed Sangyaa, the wife of Vivasvata, gave birth to Shraadhaadeva, the Manu, and the twins, the god Yama and Yamee. She only then became a mare on this earth and gave birth to the Ashwini Kumaaras.


छाया शनैश्चरं लेभे सावर्णिं च मनुं तत: ।

कन्यां च तपतीं या वै वव्रे संवरणं पतिम् ॥४१॥


छाया शनैश्चरम् लेभे
Chaayaa Shanaishchara got,
सावर्णिम् च मनुम् तत:
Saavarnee and the Manu after that
कन्याम् च तपतीम् या वै
daughter and Tapatee, who indeed
वव्रे संवरणम् पतिम्
accepted Samvarna as husband

His other wife Chaayaa, gave birth to Shanaishchara, Saavarnee Manu and after that a daughter Tapatee, who accepted Samvarna as her husband.


अर्यम्णो मातृका पत्नी तयोश्चर्षणय: सुता: ।

यत्र वै मानुषी जातिर्ब्रह्मणा चोपकल्पिता ॥४२॥


अर्यम्ण: मातृका पत्नी
of Aryamaa, Maatrikaa wife
तयो:-चर्षणय: सुता:
of them both, Charshanees sons
यत्र वै मानुषी जाति:-
from where indeed, human species
ब्रह्मणा च-उपकल्पिता
by Brahmaa and was evolved

Aryamaa's wife was Maatrikaa, the sons of both of them were Charshanees, from whom indeed, Brahmaa evolved the human species.


पूषानपत्य: पिष्टादो भग्नदन्तोऽभवत् पुरा ।

योऽसौ दक्षाय कुपितं जहास विवृतद्विज: ॥४३॥


पूषा-अनपत्य: पिष्ट-अद:
Pooshaa was issue-less, the ground food eater
भग्न-दन्त:-अभवत् पुरा
broken teeth, became long back
य:-असौ दक्षाय कुपितम्
who this, on Daksha being angry (Shankara)
जहास विवृत-द्विज:
laughed disposing his teeth

Poosha was issue-less, and he ate ground food, because his teeth were broken long back when he, with disposed teeth laughed at Daksha when Shankara got angry at him.


त्वष्टुर्दैत्यानुजा भार्या रचना नाम कन्यका ।

संनिवेशस्तयोर्जज्ञे विश्वरूपश्च वीर्यवान् ॥४४॥


त्वष्टु:-दैत्य-अनुजा भार्या
of Twashtaa, the Daitya's younger sister
रचना नाम कन्यका
Rachana by name, the young girl
संनिवेश:-तयो:-जज्ञे
Sannivesha, of them both was born
विश्वरूप:-च वीर्यवान्
Vishvaroopa and the mighty

The younger sister of the Daityas, Rachana by name, was Twashta's wife. From both of them were born Sannivesha and the mighty Vishvaroopa.


तं वव्रिरे सुरगणा: स्वस्रीयं द्विषतामपि ।

विमतेन परित्यक्ता गुरुणाऽऽङ्गिरसेन यत् ॥४५॥


तम् वव्रिरे सुर-गणा:
him appointed, the gods' hosts
स्वस्रीयम् द्विषताम्-अपि
the nephew, of enemies though
विमतेन परित्यक्ता:
insulted, deserted
गुरुणा-अङ्गिरसेन यत्
by own preceptor, Brihaspati because

The hosts of gods unanimously appointed him, Vishvaroopa, as their preceptor even though he was the nephew of their enemies, because their own preceptor Brihaspati had deserted them, as he had felt insulted.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां षष्ठे स्कन्धे षष्ठ: अद्याय: ॥६॥


Thus ends the sixth discourse, in Book Six of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
