राजा-उवाच -
The King said -
यया गुप्त: सहस्राक्ष: सवाहान् रिपुसैनिकान् ।

क्रीडन्निव विनिर्जित्य त्रिलोक्या बुभुजे श्रियम् ॥१॥


यया गुप्त: सहस्राक्ष:
by which protected, the thousand eyed (Indra)
सवाहान् रिपुसैनिकान्
along with the mounts, enemies' soldiers
क्रीडन्-इव विनिर्जित्य
as though in play, defeated
त्रिलोक्या बुभुजे श्रियम्
in the three worlds, enjoyed the fortune

By which the thousand eyed Indra, defeated the soldiers of the enemies and their mounts, as if in play, and enjoyed the fortune of the three worlds….


भगवंस्तन्ममाख्याहि वर्म नारायणात्मकम् ।

यथाऽऽततायिन: शत्रून् येन गुप्तोऽजयन्मृधे ॥२॥


भगवन्-तत्-मम-आख्याहि
O Divine sage! that to me do say
वर्म नारायण-आत्मकम्
that armour, to Naaraayana related
यथा-आततायिन: शत्रून्
so that the attacking enemies
येन गुप्त:-अजयन्-मृधे
by which protected, conquered in the battle

O sage! Do teach me that prayer, that armour, related to Lord Naaraayana, protected by which he conquered the attacking enemies in the battle field.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shri Shuka said -
वृत: पुरोहितस्त्वाष्ट्रो महेन्द्रायानुपृच्छते ।

नारायणाख्यं वर्माह तदिहैकमना: शृणु ॥३॥


वृत: पुरोहित:-त्वाष्ट्र:
engaged as the presiding priest, Twashtra (Vishvaroopa)
महेन्द्राय-अनुपृच्छते
to Indra, who had asked
नारायण-आख्यम् वर्म-आह
Naaraayana named armour told to
तत्-इह-एक-मना: शृणु
that, now, (with) undivided attention, listen to

Engaged as the presiding priest, Tvashtra, Vishvaroopa, then told to Indra, when he had asked, the armour named Naaraayana, which now listen to with full attention.


श्री विश्वरूप उवाच -
Vishvaroopa said -
धौताङ्घ्रिपाणिराचम्य सपवित्र उदङ्मुख: ।

कृतस्वाङ्गकरन्यासो मन्त्राभ्यां वाग्यत: शुचि: ॥४॥


धौत-अङ्घ्रि-पाणि:-आचम्य
washed feet and hands, drinking a sip of water three times,
सपवित्र उदङ्मुख:
purified, north faced,
कृत-स्व-अङ्ग करन्यास:
having done own limbs, hands placing
मन्त्राभ्याम् वाग्यत: शुचि:
by Mantras, voice so that is purified

One should wash ones feet and hands and drink three sips of water, should sit north faced, placing hands on the limbs should purify them with Mantras so that the voice is also purified.


नारायणमयं वर्म सन्नह्येद् भय आगते ।

पादयोर्जानुनोरूर्वोरुदरे हृद्यथोरसि ॥५॥


नारायण-मयम् वर्म
Naaraayana encompassing armour
सन्नह्येद् भय आगते
may put on, (when) danger facing
पादयो:-जानुनो:-ऊर्वो:-
on feet knees, thighs,
उदरे हृदि-अथ-उरसि
belly, heart and chest

In the face of danger one may put on the Naaraayana encompassing armour from the feet, to the knees, the thighs, belly, heart and chest…..


मुखे शिरस्यानुपूर्व्यादोङ्कारादीनि विन्यसेत् ।

ॐ नमोनारायणायेति विपर्यमथापि वा ॥६॥


मुखे शिरसि-अनुपूर्व्यात्-
in the mouth, head, sequentially
ओंङ्कार-आदीनि विन्यसेत्
Om and the rest, insert
ॐ नमो-नारायणाय-इति
of "Om Namo Naaraayanaaya"
विपर्यम्-अथ-अपि वा
reverse, then also or

In the mouth, head, sequentially, thus may insert OM etc.. Then, or, may also again place 'Om Namo Naaraayanaaya' in the reverse direction.


करन्यासं तत: कुर्याद् द्वादशाक्षरविद्यया ।

प्रणवादियकारान्तमङ्गुल्यङ्गुष्ठपर्वसु ॥७॥


करन्यासम् तत: कुर्यात्
consecration, then should do
द्वादश-अक्षर विद्यया
with twelve letters' Mantra
प्रणव-आदि यकार-अन्तम्-
with Om in the beginning, and 'Ya' in the end
अङ्गुली-अङ्गुष्ठ-पर्वसु
in the fingers and thumb joints

Then with the twelve letter Mantra, (Om Namo Bhagavate Vaasudevaaya), consecration of the palms should be done, by beginning with 'Om' and ending with 'Ya' on the joints of the fingers and the thumbs.


न्यसेद्धृदय ओङ्कारं विकारमनु मूर्धनि ।

षकारं तु भ्रुवोर्मध्ये णकारं शिखया दिशेत् ॥८॥


न्यसेत्-हृदये ओङ्कारम्
consecrate in the heart, 'Om'
विकारम्-अनु मूर्धनि
'Vi' then, in the crown
षकारम् तु भ्रुवो:-मध्ये
'Sha' indeed, the eyebrows, between
णकारम् शिखया दिशेत्
Na' in the back of the crown, consecrate

In the heart should consecrate 'Om', then, 'Vi' in the crown, 'Sha' indeed, between the eyebrows, and consecrate 'Na' in the back of the crown.


वेकारं नेत्रयोर्युञ्ज्यान्नकारं सर्वसन्धिषु ।

मकारमस्त्रमुद्दिश्य मन्त्रमूर्तिर्भवेद् बुध: ॥९॥


वेकारम् नेत्रयो:-युञ्ज्यात्-
'Va' in the eyes connect
नकारम् सर्व-सन्धिषु
'Na' in all joints
मकारम्-अस्त्रम्-उद्दिश्य
'Ma' as weapon applying
मन्त्र-मूर्ति: भवेत् बुध:
Mantra personified, should become the wise

'Va' should be connected to the two eyes, and 'Na' to all the joints, 'Ma' applying as a weapon for protection from the directions, the wise should become Mantra personified.


सविसर्गं फडन्तं तत् सर्वदिक्षु विनिर्दिशेत् ।

ॐ विष्णवे नम इति ॥१०॥


स-विसर्गम् फडन्तम् तत्
with the visarga ' : ', snapping that
सर्व-दिक्षु विनिर्दिशेत्
in all directions should apply
ॐ विष्णवे नम इति
'Om Vishnave Namah', thus

With the visarga, ( : ), snapping the fingers, must apply into all the directions, 'Om Vishnave Namah', thus.


आत्मानं परमं ध्यायेद् ध्येयं षट्शक्तिभिर्युतम् ।

विद्यातेजस्तपोमूर्तिमिमं मन्त्रमुदाहरेत् ॥११॥


आत्मानम् परमम् ध्यायेद्
self (one with) The Supreme Self must visualize
ध्येयम् षट्-शक्तिभि:-युतम्
should be meditated on The One with six powers endowed
विद्या-तेज:-तप:-मूर्तिम्-
learning, glory, asceticism personified
इमम्- मन्त्रम्-उदाहरेत्
this Mantra should repeat

One should visualize oneself to be one with the six powers endowed Supreme self. For manifesting learning, glory and asceticism personified, should repeat this Mantra,…..


ॐ हरिर्विदध्यान्मम सर्वरक्षां न्यस्ताङ्घ्रिपद्म: पतगेन्द्रपृष्ठे ।

दरारिचर्मासिगदेषुचापपाशान् दधानोऽष्टगुणोऽष्टबाहु: ॥१२॥


ॐ हरि:-विदध्यात्-मम
OM Hari may bestow me
सर्व-रक्षाम् न्यस्त-अङ्घ्रि-पद्म:
all protection, (Who has) placed feet lotus
पतगेन्द्र-पृष्ठे
on Gaduda's shoulder
दर-अरि-चर्म-असि-
conch, discus, shield, sword,
गदा-इषु-चाप-पाशान्
mace, arrow, bow, noose
दधान:-अष्ट-गुण:-अष्ट-बाहु:
holding, having eight (mystic) powers, in eight arms

OM Hari! May I be bestowed with all protection, by the grace of Him, Who has placed His lotus feet on the back of Gaduda. Who has eight mystic powers and Who holds the conch, discus, shield, sword, mace, arrow, bow, noose in eight arms.


जलेषु मां रक्षतु मत्स्यमूर्तिर्यादोगणेभ्यो वरुणस्य पाशात् ।

स्थलेषु मायावटुवामनोऽव्यात् त्रिविक्रम: खेऽवतु विश्वरूप: ॥१३॥


जलेषु माम् रक्षतु मत्स्य-मूर्ति:-
in the waters, me, may protect The divine Fish form
याद:-गणेभ्य: वरुणस्य पाशात्
the aquatic creatures hosts, Varuna's noose like
स्थलेषु माया-वटु-
on land, mystic student
वामन:-अव्यात्
Vaamana may guard
त्रिविक्रम: खे-अवतु
The Three Strides (form) in sky may guard
विश्वरूप:
in the form of Vishvaroopa

May He protect me in the waters from the aquatic creatures which are like Varuna's noose, in the form of the divine Fish. On the land, in the form of the mystic student Vaamana, may He guard me. May The same Lord as Vishvaroopa, striding the cosmos in three strides, may guard me in the air (sky).


दुर्गेष्वटव्याजिमुखादिषु प्रभु: पायान्नृसिंहोऽसुरयूथपारि: ।

विमुञ्चतो यस्य महाट्टहासं दिशो विनेदुर्न्यपतंश्च गर्भा: ॥१४॥


दुर्गेषु-अटवी-
in castles, forests
आजिमुख-आदिषु
battle front, etc.,
प्रभु: पायात्-नृसिंह:-
The Lord may protect Nrisingha
असुर-यूथप-अरि:
of the demons' host's enemy
विमुञ्चत: यस्य
giving forth by Whose
महा-अट्टहासम्
great laughter
दिश: विनेदु:-
the directions echoed
न्यपतन्-च गर्भा:
discharged were embryos

May The Lord Narasingha, protect me in the castles, the forests, the battle front etc., He, Who is the enemy of the hosts of the demons and Whose giving away of the tremendous laughter, the embryos in the wombs of the demon wives were discharged.


रक्षत्वसौ माध्वनि यज्ञकल्प: स्वदंष्ट्रयोन्नीतधरो वराह: ।

रामोऽद्रिकूटेष्वथ विप्रवासे सलक्ष्मणोऽव्याद् भरताग्रजोऽस्मान् ॥१५॥


रक्षतु-असौ माध्वनि
may protect This, on the path
यज्ञ-कल्प: स्व-दंष्ट्रया
The Sacrifice form, by own tusk
उन्नीत-धर: वराह:
uplifted the earth, The Boar
राम:-अद्रि-कूटेषु-अथ
Parashuraama, on mountain peaks, then
विप्रवासे स-लक्ष्मण:-अव्यात्-
in travel, along with Lakshmana may guard
भरत-अग्रज:-अस्मान्
Bharata's elder brother (Shri Raama) us

The sacrifices personified, The divine Boar, Who lifted the earth on His own tusks, may He protect us on the path. May Parashuraama protect us on mountain peaks. And then, may the elder brother of Bharata, along with Lakshmana, guard us in travel.


मामुग्रधर्मादखिलात् प्रमादान्नारायण: पातु नरश्च हासात् ।

दत्तस्त्वयोगादथ योगनाथ: पायाद् गुणेश: कपिल: कर्मबन्धात् ॥१६॥


माम्-उग्र-धर्मात्-
me from violent religious practices
अखिलात् प्रमादात्-
from all sins of omissions
नारायण: पातु
The Lord Naaraayana may save
नर:-च हासात्
Lord Nara from pride
दत्त:-तु-योगात्-
Dattatreya indeed from Yoga non-practicing
अथ योग नाथ: पायाद्
then Yogas master may save
गुणेश: कपिल:
The master of Prakriti, Kapila
कर्म-बन्धात्
may protect me from actions' bondage

May The Lord Naaraayana save me from violent religious practices, and from all sins of omissions. May Lord Nara save me from pride. May the Master of Yoga, Dattatreya save me from non-practice of yoga, and may Lord Kapila, the master of Prakriti protect me from the bondage of actions.


सनत्कुमारोऽवतु कामदेवाद् हयशीर्षा मां पथि देवहेलनात् ।

देवर्षिवर्य: पुरुषार्चनान्तरात् कूर्मो हरिर्मां निरयादशेषात् ॥१७॥


सनत्कुमार:-अवतु कामदेवात्
Sanatkumaaras may guard from love-pangs
हयशीर्षा माम्
Hayasheersha me from
पथि देव-हेलनात्
on the way from deities' neglecting (to bow to)
देवर्षि-वर्य:
of the celestial sage the scion (Naarada)
पुरुष-अर्चन-अन्तरात्
The Primary Person's worshipping mistakes
कूर्म: हरि:-माम्
The tortoise Shree Hari me
निरयात्-अशेषात्
from hell endless

May The Lord as Sanatkumaar guard me from love-pangs, and Hayasheersha may protect me from ignoring to bow at the deities on the way. The scion celestial sage Naarada may guard me against the mistakes in worshipping The Primary Person, and The Tortoise Shree Hari save me from the endless hells.


धन्वन्तरिर्भगवान् पात्वपथ्याद् द्वन्द्वाद् भयादृषभो निर्जितात्मा ।

यज्ञश्च लोकादवताज्जनान्ताद् बलो गणात् क्रोधवशादहीन्द्र: ॥१८॥


धन्वन्तरि:-भगवान्
Dhanwantaree The Lord
पातु-अपथ्यात्
may protect from wrong diet
द्वन्द्वाद् भयात्-
from dualities fear
ऋषभ: निर्जित-आत्मा
Rishabha, who has conquered the mind
यज्ञ:-च लोकात्-
(Lord) Yagya and from public
अवतात्-जन-अन्तात्
save scandal
बल: गणात्
Balaraama from (death) human (hands)
क्रोधवशात्-अहीन्द्र:
from the (serpents) Krodhavashaa, the head serpent Shesha

May The Lord Dhanwantaree protect me from wrong diet and Rishabha, who has conquered his mind from the fear of dualities. May Lord Yagya guard me from public scandal and Balaraama from death at human hands, and the lord of serpents Shesha from the Krodhavasha class of serpents.


द्वैपायनो भगवानप्रबोधाद् बुद्धस्तु पाखण्डगणात् प्रमादात् ।

कल्कि: कले कालमलात् प्रपातु धर्मावनायोरुकृतावतार: ॥१९॥


द्वैपायन: भगवान्-अप्रबोधात्
Dwaipaayana Lord from ignorance
बुद्ध:-तु पाखण्ड-गणात्
Buddha indeed from heretical creeds
प्रमादात्
and from neglect (of duties)
कल्कि: कले
Kalki, from Kaliyuga
काल-मलात् प्रपातु
times refuse guard
धर्म-अवनाय-
for the righteousness upholding,
उरु-कृत-अवतार:
glorious taken manifestation

May Lord Dwaipaayana guard me from ignorance, and Buddha from heretical creeds and negligence of duties. In Kaliyuga, may Lord Kali guard me from the refuse, the dirtiest of times, Who took the glorious manifestation to protect righteousness.


मां केशवो गदया प्रातरव्याद् गोविन्द आसङ्गवमात्तवेणु: ।

नारायण: प्राह्ण उदात्तशक्तिर्मध्यन्दिने विष्णुररीन्द्रपाणि: ॥२०॥


माम् केशव:
me Keshava
गदया प्रात:-अव्यात्
by the mace in the morning coming
गोविन्द आसङ्गवम्-
Govinda in the mid morning
आत्त-वेणु: नारायण: प्राह्ण
holding the flute, Naaraayana in the noon
उदात्त-शक्ति:-
with uplifted javelin
मध्यन्-दिने विष्णु:-
at mid-day Vishnu
अरीन्द्र-पाणि:
discus in hand

May Keshava protect me with His mace when morning comes, Govinda in mid morning with His flute, Naaraayana with His uplifted javelin in the noon, and in mid-day Vishnu with His discus in hand.


देवोऽपराह्णे मधुहोग्रधन्वा सायं त्रिधामावतु माधवो माम् ।

दोषे हृषीकेश उतार्धरात्रे निशीथे एकोऽवतु पद्मनाभ: ॥२१॥


देव:-अपराह्णे
Lord in the afternoon
मधुहा-उग्र-धन्वा
Madhusoodana, with a terrible bow
सायम् त्रिधामा-अवतु
in the evening three forms having, may save
माधव: माम्
Maadhava, me
दोषे हृषीकेश:
at dusk Hrishikesha
उत-अर्ध-रात्रे निशीथे
indeed in before night and mid night
एक:-अवतु पद्मनाभ:
alone may save Padmanaabha

May Lord Madhusoodana, with a terrible bow save me in the afternoon, and Maadhava having three forms of Brahmaa, Vishnu and Mahesha, may save me in the evening, at dusk Hrishikesha. Indeed before night and at mid night Padmanaabha alone may save me.


श्रीवत्सधामापररात्र ईश: प्रत्यूष ईशोऽसिधरो जनार्दन: ।

दामोदरोऽव्यादनुसन्ध्यं प्रभाते विश्वेश्वरो भगवान् कालमूर्ति: ॥२२॥

May The Lord bearing the Shri-vats save me later in night, and Janaardana at the end of night, before morning. May Lord Daamodara save me in both twilights, morning and evening, and Lord Vishveshvara as Time Spirit in the morning.


चक्रं युगान्तानलतिग्मनेमि भ्रमत् समन्ताद् भगवत्प्रयुक्तं ।

दन्दग्धि दन्दग्ध्यरिसैन्यमाशु कक्षं यथा वातसखो हुताश: ॥२३॥


चक्रम् युगान्त-
O (Sudarshana) Chakra (discus) at universal dissolution
अनल-तिग्म-नेमि
fire like sharp edged
भ्रमत् समन्तात्
revolving all round
भगवत्-प्रयुक्तम्
by The Lord employed
दन्दग्धि दन्दग्धि-
burn away, burn away
अरि-सैन्यम्-आशु
enemies' army soon
कक्षम् यथा
stack of hay, just as
वात-सख: हुताश:
wind as friend fire (burns)

O Sudarshana Chakra! having fire like sharp rim, employed by The Lord you revolve all around, at the time of universal dissolution. Do burn soon, the hosts of our enemies just as fire having the wind as a friend burns a stack of hay.


गदेऽशनिस्पर्शनविस्फुलिङ्गे निष्पिण्ढि निष्पिण्ढ्यजितप्रियासि ।

कूष्माण्डवैनायकयक्षरक्षो भूतग्रहांश्चूर्णय चूर्णयारीन् ॥२४॥


गदे-अशनि-स्पर्शन-
O Mace! (Kaumodaki), thunderbolt like to touch
विस्फुलिङ्गे
the sparks
निष्पिण्डि निष्पिण्डि-
do crush, O! crush
अजित-प्रियासि
of The Invincible Lord the beloved
कूष्माण्ड-वैनायक-यक्ष-रक्षो
the Kushmaanda, Vainaayaka, Yaksha, Raakshasas,
भूत-ग्रहान्-
Bhootas and Grahaas
चूर्णय चूर्णय-अरीन्
grind, O! grind (to dust) the enemies

O Kaumodaki Mace! The beloved of The Invincible Lord! Your sparks are deadly to the touch like thunderbolts. Do crush, O! do crush the Kushmaandas, Vainaayakas, the Yakshas, Raakshasa, Bhootas and Grahas, do grind them, O!grind them, these enemies, to dust.


त्वं यातुधानप्रमथप्रेतमातृपिशाचविप्रग्रहघोरदृष्टीन् ।

दरेन्द्र विद्रावय कृष्णपूरितो भीमस्वनोऽरेर्हृदयानि कम्पयन् ॥२५॥


त्वम् यातुधान-प्रमथ-
You, the Yaatudhaanas, the Pramathas,
प्रेत-मातृ-पिशाच-
Pretas, Maatris, Pishaachas,
विप्रग्रह-घोर-दृष्टीन्
the Vipragrahas, the evil eyed spirits
दरेन्द्र विद्रावय
O Conch! (Paanchajanya) drive away
कृष्ण-पूरित: भीम-स्वन:-
by Krishna blown, of terrific sound
अरे:-हृदयानि कम्पयन्
the enemies' hearts shake

O Conch Paanchajanya! May you shake the hearts of the enemies, the Yaatudhaanas, Pramathas, Pretas, Maatris, Pishaachas, Vipragrahas, and the evil eyed spirits, with your terrific sound when blown by Shri Krishna.


त्वं तिग्मधारासिवरारिसैन्यमीशप्रयुक्तो मम छिन्धि छिन्धि ।

चक्षूंषि चर्मञ्छतचन्द्र छादय द्विषामघोनां हर पापचक्षुषाम् ॥२६॥


त्वम् तिग्म-धार-असिवर
you, sharp edged sword supreme (Nandaka)
आरि-सैन्यन्-ईश-प्रयुक्त:
enemies hosts, by The Lord employed
मम छिन्धि छिन्धि
my cut off mow down
चक्षूंषि चर्मन्-
the eyes O Shield!
शत-चन्द्र छादय
like a hundred moons, cover
द्विषाम्-अघोनाम्
of the foes wicked
हर पाप-चक्षुषाम्
take away the eyes of the evil eyed

O Supreme sword Nandaka! May you the sharp edged, employed by The Lord, cut off and mow down my hosts of enemies. O Shield! With eyes like a hundred moons, do cover the eyes of the wicked foes and blind the eyes of the evil eyed.


यन्नो भयं ग्रहेभ्योऽभूत् केतुभ्यो नृभ्य एव च ।

सरीसृपेभ्यो दंष्ट्रिभ्यो भूतेभ्योंऽहोभ्य एव वा ॥२७॥


यत्-न: भयम् ग्रहेभ्य:-अभूत्
that our fear by the comets was
केतुभ्य: नृभ्य: एव च
by the Ketus, men, also and
सरीसृपेभ्य: दंष्ट्रिभ्य:
by reptiles, by sharp toothed (animals)
भूतेभ्यो:-अंहोभ्य: एव वा
by Bhootas, by sins, also and

Those fears of ours, caused by comets, Ketus, men, reptiles, sharp toothed animals, Bhoots and also by sins,…


सर्वाण्येतानि भगवन्नामरूपास्त्रकीर्तनात् ।

प्रयान्तु संक्षयं सद्यो ये न: श्रेय:प्रतीपका: ॥२८॥


सर्वाणि-एतानि भगवन्-नाम-
all these, by Lord's name,
रूप-अस्त्र-कीर्तनात्
form, weapons utterance
प्रयान्तु संक्षयम् सद्य:
may go to complete destruction, soon
ये न: श्रेय: प्रतीपका:
which our welfare obstruct

All these, and those which obstruct our welfare may soon go to complete destruction by the utterance of The Lord's name, form and mention of the weapons.


गरुडो भगवान् स्तोत्रस्तोभश्छन्दोमय: प्रभु: ।

रक्षत्वशेषकृच्छ्रेभ्यो विष्वक्सेन: स्वनामभि: ॥२९॥


गरुड: भगवान्
Garuda, the glorious
स्तोत्र-स्तोभ:-
is extolled by Saamaveda hymns
छन्दोमय: प्रभु:
Vedas personified the mighty
रक्षतु-अशेष कृच्छ्रेभ्य:
protect from endless dangers
विष्वक्सेन: स्व-नामभि:
Vishwaksena by own name

May the glorious mighty Gaduda, Vishwaksena, the attendant of The Lord, extolled by the hymns of Saamaveda, himself the Vedas personified, protect us from all dangers, by the mere utterance of his own name.


सर्वापद्भ्यो हरेर्नामरूपयानायुधानि न: ।

बुद्धीन्द्रियमन: प्राणान् पान्तु पार्षदभूषणा: ॥३०॥


सर्व-आपद्भ्य:
from all adversities
हरे:-नाम-रूप-
(may) Hari's name, form,
यान-आयुधानि न:
vehicle, weapons us
बुद्धि-इन्द्रिय-मन: प्राणान्
intellect, senses, mind, life force,
पान्तु पार्षद-भूषणा:
may protect, the attendents glorious

May Hari's name, form, mount, weapons, protect us from all adversities, and the foremost of His attendents may protect our intellect, senses, mind and life force.


यथाहि भगवानेव वस्तुत: सदसच्च यत् ।

सत्येनानेन न: सर्वे यान्तु नाशमुपद्रवा: ॥३१॥


यथाहि भगवान्-एव
just as, The Lord only
वस्तुत: सत्-असत्-च यत्
in fact, of the form and without form that
सत्येन-अनेन न: सर्वे
by truth this, our all
यान्तु नाशम्-उपद्रवा:
may go to destruction, the troubles

Just as, Lord alone is in fact the form and formless of all that there is, the truth of this fact alone may destroy all our troubles.


यथैकात्म्यानुभावानां विकल्परहित: स्वयम् ।

भूषणायुधलिङ्गाख्या धत्ते शक्ती: स्वमायया ॥३२॥


यथा-एक-आत्म्य-अनुभावानाम्
just as one with The Self experiencing
विकल्प-रहित: स्वयम्
differentiation without self
भूषण-आयुध लिङ्ग-आख्या-
ornaments, weapons, signs, name
धत्ते शक्ती: स्व-मायया
take on potency by own Maayaa

Just as those who have experienced themselves one with The Supreme Self, and by their own Maayaa take on the ornaments, weapons, signs, names and potency,…


तेनैव सत्यमानेन सर्वज्ञो भगवान् हरि: ।

पातु सर्वे: स्वरूपैर्न: सदा सर्वत्र सर्वश: ॥३३॥


तेन-एव सत्यम्-अनेन
by that only truth this
सर्वज्ञ: भगवान् हरि:
omniscient Lord Shree Hari
पातु सर्वे: स्व-रूपै:-न:
save by all, by own forms, us
सदा सर्वत्र सर्वश:
always everywhere, from all sides

May That omniscient Lord Shree Hari, by that this truth alone always save us always, everywhere, from all sides by all His forms.


विदिक्षु दिक्षूर्ध्वमध: समन्तादन्तर्बहिर्भगवान् नारसिंह: ।

प्रहापयँल्लोकभयं स्वनेन स्वतेजसा ग्रस्तसमस्ततेजा: ॥३४॥


विदिक्षु दिक्षु-ऊर्ध्वम्-अध:
in the (intermediary) corners, directions, up side, down side
समन्तात्-अन्त:-बहि:-
all around inside outside
भगवान् नारसिंह:
Lord Narasingha
प्रहापयन्-लोक-भयम्
dispelling all people fear
स्वनेन स्व-तेजसा
by own roar, by own effulgence
ग्रस्त-समस्त-तेजा:
eclipsed all luminaries

May The Lord Narasingha protect us in all the directions, in the intermediary corners, above and down, inside and outside, dispelling the fear of all people by His own roar, and by eclipsing all luminaries by His own effulgence.


मघवन्निदमाख्यातं वर्म नारायणात्मकम् ।

विजेष्यस्यञ्जसा येन दंशितोऽसुरयूथपान् ॥३५॥


मघवन्-इदम्-आख्यातम्
O Indra! this is said
वर्म नारायण-आत्मकम्
the armour, Naaraayana imbued
विजेष्यसि-अञ्जसा येन
will conquer easily by which
दंशित:-असुर-यूथपान्
protected demons' generals

O Indra! This armour imbued with the spirit of Naaraayana, has been told to you, protected by which you will easily conquer the generals of the armies of the demons.


एतद् धारयमाणस्तु यं यं पश्यति चक्षुषा ।

पदा वा संस्पृशेत् सद्य: साध्वसात् स विमुच्यते ॥३६॥


एतद् धारयमाण:-तु
this (armour) wearing certainly
यम् यम् पश्यति चक्षुषा
who so ever looks at with (his) eyes
पदा वा संस्पृशेत् सद्य:
by feet or duly touches, immediately
साध्वसात् स: विमुच्यते
from fear, he is free

The one who wears this armour, when he, with his eyes, looks at who-so-ever, or with his feet duly touches whom-so-ever, he is immediately free of all fear.


न कुतश्चिद् भयं तस्य विद्यां धारयतो भवेत् ।

राजदस्युग्रहादिभ्यो व्याघ्रादिभ्यश्च कर्हिचित् ॥३७॥


न कुतश्चिद् भयम् तस्य
not from anywhere fear his (who)
विद्याम् धारयत: भवेत्
this knowledge has attained, will be
राज-दस्यु-ग्रह-आदिभ्य:
from ruler, robbers, evil spirits, and others
व्याघ्र-आदिभ्य:-च कर्हिचित्
from tiger and other (ferocious beasts) and at all

The one who has attained the knowledge of this sacred text, will never ever have any fear from any where, not even from a ruler, robbers, evil spirits, and others and not also from tigers or other ferocious beasts.


इमां विद्यां पुरा कश्चित् कौशिको धारयन् द्विज: ।

योगधारणया स्वाङ्गं जहौ स मरुधन्वनि ॥३८॥


इमाम् विद्याम् पुरा कश्चित्
this text, long back, some
कौशिक: धारयन् द्विज:
Kaushika, fixed in mind, Braahmana
योग-धारणया स्व-अङ्गम्
by yoga concentration, own body
जहौ स: मरु-धन्वनि
gave up, he in desert place

Long back, some Kaushika Braahmana, with his mind fixed on this text, gave up his body in a desert place by concentrating on yoga.


तस्योपरि विमानेन गन्धर्वपतिरेकदा ।

ययौ चित्ररथ: स्त्रीभिर्वृतो यत्र द्विजक्षय: ॥३९॥


तस्य-उपरि विमानेन
him above, by aerial car
गन्धर्व-पति:-एकदा
the Gandharva chief, one day
ययौ चित्ररथ: स्त्रीभि:-वृत:
went Chitraratha, with ladies surrounded
यत्र द्विज-क्षय:
where the Braahmana had died

One day, the chief of the Gandharvas, Chitraratha, surrounded by ladies, by an aerial car flew over where the Braahmana had died.


गगनान्न्यपतत् सद्य: सविमानो ह्यवाक्शिरा: ।

स बालखिल्यवचनादस्थीन्यादाय विस्मित: ।

प्रास्य प्राचीसरस्वत्यां स्नात्वा धाम स्वमन्वगात् ॥४०॥


गगनात्-न्यपतत् सद्य:
from the sky fell, soon
सविमान: हि-अह्यवाक्-शिरा:
with the aerial car, indeed head first
स: बालखिल्य वचनात्-
he, by Baalakhilya's words,
अस्थीनि-आदाय विस्मित:
bones having taken, surprised
प्रास्य प्राची-सरस्वत्याम्
immersed in eastward flowing Saraswati
स्नात्वा धाम स्वम्-अन्वगात्
having bathed, abode own retired to

He, soon, along with his aerial car fell head long. He, then advised by the Baalkhilya sages, and very much amazed, took the bones and immersed them in the eastward flowing Saraswati river.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shri Shuka said -
य इदं शृणुयात् काले यो धारयति चादृत: ।

तं नमस्यन्ति भूतानि मुच्यते सर्वतो भयात् ।


य: इदम् शृणुयात् काले
who-so-ever, this hears to, in time
य: धारयति च-आदृत:
who takes it and with respect
तम् नमस्यन्ति भूतानि
him bow all beings
मुच्यते सर्वत: भयात्
is freed of all fear

Who-so-ever hears this in time, and he who takes it on with respect, all beings bow to him, and he is freed of all fear.


एतां विद्यामधिगतो विश्वरूपाच्छतक्रतु: ।

त्रैलोक्यलक्ष्मीं बुभुजे विनिर्जित्य मृधेऽसुरान् ॥४२॥


एताम् विद्याम्-अधिगत:
this knowledge having gained
विश्वरूपात्-शतक्रतु:
from Vishvaroopa, Indra
त्रैलोक्य-लक्ष्मीम् बुभुजे
of the three worlds' fortune enjoyed
विनिर्जित्य मृधे-असुरान्
conquering in the battle the demons

Indra having gained this knowledge from Vishvaroopa, conquered the demons in the battle and enjoyed the fortune of the three worlds.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंसायां संहितायां षष्ठ स्कन्धे नारायणवर्मकथनं नाम अष्टम: अध्याय: ॥८॥


Thus ends the eighth discourse, entitled 'The text of the Naaraayana-Kavach taught' in Book Six of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
