श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
तदा देवर्षिगन्धर्वा ब्रह्मेशानपुरोगमा: ।

मुमुचु: कुसुमासारं शंसन्त: कर्म तत् हरे: ॥१॥


तदा देवर्षि-गन्धर्वा:
at that time, the gods, the sages, the Gandharvas,
ब्रह्म-ईशान-पुरोगमा:
Brahmaa, Lord Shiva, headed by
मुमुचु: कुसुम-आसारम्
discharged flower showers
शंसन्त: कर्म तत् हरे:
applauding the feat that of Shree Hari

At that time, the gods, sages, Gandharvas, headed by Brahmaa and Lord Shiva, discharged showers of flowers, as they applauded that feat of Shree Hari.


नेदुर्दुन्दुभयो दिव्या गन्धर्वा ननृतुर्जगु: ।

ऋषयश्चारणा: सिद्धास्तुष्टुवु: पुरुषोत्तमम् ॥२॥


नेदु:-दुन्दुभय: दिव्या:
sounded were trumpets heavenly
गन्धर्वा: ननृतु:-जगु:
the Gandharvas, danced and sang
ऋषय:-चारणा: सिद्धा:-
the sages and Chaaranas, the Siddhas
तुष्टुवु: पुरुषोत्तमम्
glorified The Supreme Person

The heavenly trumpets were sounded, the Gandharvas danced and sang, the sages, the Chaaranas, the Siddhas, glorified The Supreme Person.


योऽसौ ग्राह: स वै सद्य: परमाश्चर्यरूपधृक् ।

मुक्तो देवलशापेन हूहूर्गन्धर्वसत्तम: ॥३॥


य:-असौ ग्राह: स: वै
that which was the alligator, he certainly
सद्य: परम-आश्चर्य-रूपधृक्
soon, very astonishing form assuming
मुक्त: देवल-शापेन
redeemed from Devala's curse
हूहू:-गन्धर्व-सत्तम:
(who was) Hoo-hoo, the Gandharva prominent

That alligator, which was the prominent Hoo-hoo Gandharva, certainly, redeemed of the curse of Devala, very soon assumed a very astonishing form.


प्रणम्य शिरसाधीशमुत्तमश्लोकमव्ययम् ।

अगायत यशोधाम कीर्तन्यगुणसत्कथम् ॥४॥


प्रणम्य शिरसा-अधीशम्-
greeting with head (bowed low), The Supreme Lord,
उत्तम-श्लोकम्-अव्ययम्
of excellent renown, The Immortal,
अगायत यश:-धाम
sang to The Abode of all glory
कीर्तन्य-गुण-सत्-कथम्
worthy of being sung, (His) virtues and sacred stories

He, Hoo-hoo, greeted The Supreme Immortal Lord of excellent renown, with his head bowed low, and sang of The Abode of all glory, Whose virtue and sacred stories are worthy of being sung.


सोऽनुकम्पित ईशेन परिक्रम्य प्रणम्य तम् ।

लोकस्य पश्यतो लोकं स्वमगान्मुक्तकिल्बिष: ॥५॥


स:-अनुकम्पित ईशेन
he, favoured by The Lord,
परिक्रम्य प्रणम्य तम्
circumbulated (Him), bowed to Him
लोकस्य पश्यत: लोकम् स्वम्-
as the assembly looked on, to realm own
अगात्-मुक्त-किल्बिष:
went, freed of all sins

He, favoured by The Lord, circumbulated Him, and bowed to Him, and as the assembly looked on, returned to his own realm, freed of all sins.


गजेन्द्रो भगवत्स्पर्शाद् विमुक्तोऽज्ञानबन्धनात् ।

प्राप्तो भगवतो रूपं पीतवासाश्चतुर्भुज: ॥६॥


गजेन्द्र: भगवत्-स्पर्शात्
the elephants' leader, by The Lord's touch
विमुक्त:-अज्ञान-बन्धनात्
freed from ignorance bondage
प्राप्त: भगवत: रूपम्
attained The Lord's form
पीतवासा:-चतुर्भुज:
in yellow clad, with four arms

The leader of the elephants, by the touch of The Lord, was freed from the bondage of ignorance, and attained the form of The Lord, and was clad in yellow and was endowed with four arms.


स वै पूर्वमभूद् राजा पाण्ड्यो द्रविडसत्तम: ।

इन्द्रद्युम्न इति ख्यातो विष्णुव्रतपरायण: ॥७॥


स: वै पूर्वम्-अभूद् राजा
he indeed, in the previous birth was the king
पाण्ड्य: द्रविड-सत्तम:
of the Paandyas, of the Dravida (country) the foremost
इन्द्रद्युम्न: इति ख्यात:
Indradyumna, thus well known
विष्णु-व्रत-परायण:
Vishnu's worship devoted to

Indeed, in the previous birth he was the king well known as Indradyumna, of the Paandyaas, the foremost of the country of Dravida. He was devoted to the worship of Lord Vishnu.


स एकदाऽऽराधनकाल आत्मवान् गृहीतमौनव्रत ईश्वरं हरिम् ।

जटाधरस्तापस आप्लुतोऽच्युतं समर्चयामास कुलाचलाश्रम: ॥८॥


स: एकदा-आराधन-काले
he one day, at worshipping time
आत्मवान् गृहीत-मौन-व्रत
taken to asceticism, taking a silence vow
ईश्वरम् हरिम्
The Lord Hari
जटा-धर:-तापस आप्लुत:-
with matted locks, having,
अच्युतम् समर्चयामास
The Immortal worshipped
कुलाचल-आश्रम:
in (the mount) Kulaachala, having hermitage

One day, he, who had taken to asceticism, wearing matted hair, took on a vow of silence, and proceeded to worship the Immortal Lord Hari, at the appointed time of worship, in an Aashrama in the Kulaachala mountains.


यदृच्छया तत्र महायशा मुनि: समागमच्छिष्यगणै: परिश्रित: ।

तं वीक्ष्य तूष्णीमकृतार्हणादिकं रहस्युपासीनमृषिश्चुकोप ह ॥९॥


यदृच्छया तत्र महायशा:
by chance there, the greatly renowned
मुनि: समागमत्-
sage reached,
शिष्य-गणै: परिश्रित:
with disciples' hosts surrounded
तम् वीक्ष्य तूष्णीम्-
him seeing silent
अकृत-अर्हण-आदिकम्
not offering welcome materials etc.,
रहसि-उपासीनम्-
in seclusion seated
ऋषि:-चुकोप ह
the sage was enraged indeed

By chance, the greatly renowned sage, Agastya reached there surrounded by a host of his disciples. Seeing the king seated in seclusion and silent, and not offering the articles of welcome, the sage definitely got enraged.


तस्मा इमं शापमदादसाधुरय़ं दुरात्माकृतबुद्धिरद्य ।

विप्रावमन्ता विशतां तमोऽन्धं यथा गज: स्तब्धमति: स एव ॥१०॥


तस्मै इमम् शापम्-अदात्-
for him this curse gave
असाधु:-अयम् दुरात्मा-
impious, this evil souled,
अकृत-बुद्धि:-अद्य
uncultured minded, today
विप्र-अवमन्ता विशताम्
has the Braahmana insulted, may enter
तम:-अन्धम् यथा गज:
darkness blinding, as an elephant
स्तब्ध-मति: स: एव
dull minded that only

He gave the king Indradyumna this curse, ' This impious evil soul, uncultured minded, has insulted a Braahmana today, dull minded as he is like an elephant, may he enter that state only of blinding darkness of ignorance.'


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं शप्त्वा गतोऽगस्त्यो भगवान् नृप सानुग: ।

इन्द्रद्युम्नोऽपि राजर्षिर्दिष्टं तदुपधारयन् ॥११॥


एवम् शप्त्वा गत:-अगस्त्य:
thus having cursed, went away Agastya
भगवान् नृप सानुग:
the glorious, O King! With his followers
इन्द्रद्युम्न:-अपि राजर्षि:-
Indradyumna also, the king sage
दिष्टम् तत्-उपधारयन्
destiny directed, that accepted

The glorious sage Agastya, having thus cursed, went away with his followers. O King! The sage king Indradyumna also accepted the curse as directed by destiny.


आपन्न: कौञ्जरीं योनिमात्मस्मृतिविनाशिनीम् ।

हर्यर्चनानुभावेन यद्गजत्वेऽप्यनुस्मृति: ॥१२॥


आपन्न: कौञ्जरीम् योनिम्-
fallen in elephant's womb
आत्म-स्मृति-विनाशिनीम्
Self consciousness destroying
हरि-अर्चन-अनुभावेन यत्-
Shree Hari's adoration by virtue of, so that,
गजत्वे-अपि-अनुस्मृति:
in elephant body also remembered

Though he had fallen in the womb of an elephant, which is self consciousness destroying, by virtue of the adoration of Shri Hari, he had the remembrance of Him, even in an elephant body.


एवं विमोक्ष्य गजयूथपमब्जनाभस्तेनापि पार्षदगतिं गमितेन युक्त: ।

गन्धर्वसिद्धविबुधैरुपगीयमानकर्माद्भुतं स्वभवनं गरुडासनोऽगात् ॥१३॥


एवम् विमोक्ष्य गजयूथपम्-
thus liberating, the elephant herd's leader
अब्जनाभ:-
The Lord with a lotus in the navel
तेन-अपि पार्षद-गतिम्
by him also divine attendents state
गमितेन युक्त:
having attained, accompanied
गन्धर्व-सिद्ध-विबुधै:-
The Gandharvas, Siddhas, the gods,
उपगीयमान-कर्म-अद्भुतम्
singing, the feat wonderful
स्व-भवनम् गरुड-आसन:-अगात्
to own realm, on Garuda seated went

Thus liberating the leader of the herd of elephants, who had attained the status of a divine attendant, accompanied by him, The Lord with a lotus in the navel, went to His own realm, even as the Gandharvas, Siddhas, and the gods sang of His wonderful feat.


एतन्महाराज तवेरितो मया कृष्णानुभावो गजराजमोक्षणम् ॥

स्वर्ग्यं यशस्यं कलिकल्मषापहं दु:स्वप्ननाशं कुरुवर्य शृण्वताम् ॥१४॥


एतत्-महाराज तव-ईरित:
this, O great King! to you is told
मया कृष्ण-अनुभाव:
by me, Krishna's glory
गजराज-मोक्षणम्
the elephant king's liberation
स्वर्ग्यम् यशस्यम्
which leads to heaven, renown conducive,
कलिकल्मष-आपहम्
of Kali age the impurities removing
दु:स्वप्न-नाशम्
bad dreams destroying
कुरुवर्य शृण्वताम्
O Scion of The Kuru clan! (for) the willing to hear

O great King! To you, willing to hear, the glory of Lord Krishna, and the deliverance of the leader of the herd of elephants, is told by me. O Scion of the Kuru clan!, this leads to heaven, is renown conducive, removes the impurities of the Kali age, and eliminates bad dreams.


यथानुकीर्तयन्त्येतच्छ्रेयस्कामा द्विजातय: ।

शुचय: प्रातरुत्थाय दु:स्वप्नाद्युपशान्तये ॥१५॥


यथा-अनुकीर्तयन्ति-एतत्-
Thus, recite this
श्रेयस्कामा: द्विजातय:
welfare seeking, the twice born, (Braahmanas)
शुचय: प्रात:-उत्थाय
purified, in the early morning arising,
दु:स्वप्न-आदि-उपशान्तये
bad dreams etc., to neutralize

Thus, this is recited by the welfare seeking twice born Braahmanas, arising early in the morning, and purified, to neutralize bad dreams etc.,.


इदमाह हरि: प्रीतो गजेन्द्रं कुरुसत्तम ।

शृण्वतां सर्वभूतानां सर्वभूतमयो विभु: ॥१६॥


इदम्-आह हरि: प्रीत:
this said Shree Hari, with joy
गजेन्द्रम् कुरुसत्तम
to the elephant king, O jewel of Kurus!
शृण्वताम् सर्व-भूतानाम्
in the hearing of all living beings
सर्व-भूतमय: विभु:
The All-pervading, All-mighty

O jewel of the Kurus! In the hearing of all the living beings, The All-mighty, All-pervading Shree Hari, full of joy, said this to the king of the elephants.


श्री भगवान् उवाच -
The Lord said -
ये मां त्वां च सरश्चेदं गिरिकन्दरकाननम् ।

वेत्रकीचकवेणुनां गुल्मानि सुरपादपान् ॥१७॥


ये माम् त्वाम् च सर:-च-
who-so-ever Me you and lake and
इदम् गिरि-कन्दर-काननम्
this, mountain, cave, forest,
वेत्र-कीचक-वेणुनाम्
the canes, the solid bamboos, the bamboos
गुल्मानि सुर-पादपान्
clusters, the celestial trees

Who-so-ever, Me, you, this lake and the mountain Trikoota, its caves, forest, the canes, the clusters of the solid and hollow bamboos, the celestial trees,….


शृङ्गाणीमानि धिष्ण्यानि ब्रह्मणो मे शिवस्य च ।

क्षीरोदं मे प्रियं धाम श्वेतद्वीपं च भास्वरम् ॥१८॥


शृङ्गाणि-इमानि धिष्ण्यानि
the peaks these, the abodes
ब्रह्मण: मे शिवस्य च
of Brahmaa, Myself of Shiva and
क्षीरोदम् मे प्रियम् धाम
the milk ocean My favourite abode,
श्वेतद्वीपम् च भास्वरम्
Shweta dweep and resplendent

These peaks of the Trikoota mountain, the abodes of Brahmaa, Myself and of Shiva, the milk ocean, My favourite, and the resplendent Shwetadweepa, my favourite abode,….


श्रीवत्सं कौस्तुभं मालां गदां कौमोदकीं मम ।

सुदर्शनं पाञ्चजन्यं सुपर्णं पतगेश्वरम् ॥१९॥


श्रीवत्सम् कौस्तुभम् मालाम्
the ShreeVats, the Kaustubha, the garland,
गदाम् कौमोदकीम् मम
the mace, the Kaumodaki, mine,
सुदर्शनम् पाञ्चजन्यम्
the Sudarshana, the Paanchajanya,
सुपर्णम् पतगेश्वरम्
the beautiful winged Garuda

The ShreeVats, the Kaustubha, the garland, the mace, the Kaumodaki, mine, the Sudarshana, the Paanchajanya, the beautiful winged Garuda,..


शेषं च मत्कलां सूक्ष्मां श्रियं देवीं मदाश्रयाम् ।

ब्रह्माणं नारदमृषिं भवं प्रह्लादमेव च ॥२०॥


शेषम् च मत्-कलाम् सूक्ष्माम्
Shesha and My part subtle
श्रियम् देवीम् मत्-आश्रयाम्
Shree The Goddess, in Me residing
ब्रह्माणम् नारदम्-ऋषिम्
Brahmaa, Naarada, the sage,
भवम् प्रह्लादम्-एव च
Shiva, Prahlaada also and

And My subtle part, Shesha, the serpent, The Goddess Shree, residing in Me, Brahmaa, the sage Naarada, Shiva, and also Prahlaada,...


मत्स्यकूर्मवराहाद्यैरवतारै: कृतानि मे ।

कर्माण्यनन्तपुण्यानि सूर्यं सोमं हुताशनम् ॥२१॥


मत्स्य-कूर्म-वराह-आद्यै:-
Fish, Tortoise, Boar and other
अवतारै: कृतानि मे कर्माणि-
descents, performed by Me, deeds
अनन्त-पुण्यानि
of inexhaustible merit
सूर्यम् सोमम् हुताशनम्
The Sun, The Moon, The Fire

My various descents, of Fish, Tortoise, Boar and others, the many deeds of inexhaustible merit performed by Me, The Sun, The Moon, The Fire,….


प्रणवं सत्यमव्यक्तं गोविप्रान् धर्ममव्ययम् ।

दाक्षायणीर्धर्मपत्नी: सोमकश्यपयोरपि ॥२२॥


प्रणवम् सत्यम्-अव्यक्तम्
Pranava (OM) the Truth unmanifest,
गो-विप्रान् धर्मम्-अव्ययम्
cows, Braahmanas, religion immortal,
दाक्षायणी:-धर्म-पत्नी:
Daksha's daughters, Dharma's wives
सोम-कश्यपयो:-अपि
the Moon Kashyapa, also,

Pranava (OM) the Truth unmanifest, cows, Braahmanas, immortal religion, Daksha's daughters, the wives of Dharma, the Moon and Kashyapa also,….


गङ्गां सरस्वतीं नन्दां कालिन्दीं सितवारणम् ।

ध्रुवं ब्रह्मऋषीन्सप्त पुण्यश्लोकांश्च मानवान् ॥२३॥


गङ्गाम् सरस्वतीम् नन्दाम्
Gangaa, Sarasvati, Nandaa,
कालिन्दीम् सितवारणम्
Yamunaa, the white elephant, (Airaawata)
ध्रुवम् ब्रह्म-ऋषीन्-सप्त
Dhruva, the Braahmana sages seven,
पुण्य-श्लोकान्-च मानवान्
of sacred renown and men

The Gangaa, Sarasvati, Nanda, Yamunaa, the white elephant Airaawata, Dhruva, the seven Braahmana sages, and men of sacred renown….


उत्थायापररात्रान्ते प्रयता: सुसमाहिता: ।

स्मरन्ति मम रूपाणि मुच्यन्ते ह्येनसोऽखिलात् ॥२४॥


उत्थाय-अपर-रात्र-अन्ते
arising, at the last of the night's end
प्रयता: सुसमाहिता:
purified and with concentration
स्मरन्ति मम रूपाणि
remembers My forms
मुच्यन्ते हि-एनस:-अखिलात्
are freed certainly, of sins all

Those who arise at the last part at the end of night, and remember Me and My forms with purity and concentration, they are certainly freed of all sins.


ये मां स्तुवन्त्यनेनाङ्ग प्रतिबुध्य निशात्यये ।

तेषां प्राणात्यये चाहं ददामि विमलां मतिम् ॥२५॥


ये माम् स्तुवन्ति-अनेन-अङ्ग
those who Me extol by this hymn, O Dear One!
प्रतिबुध्य निशा-अत्यये
awaking at night's end
तेषाम् प्राण-अत्यये च-अहम्
at their life's end, and I
ददामि विमलाम् मतिम्
give clear mind

O Dear One! And those who extol Me by this hymn at the end of the night, I bestow them with clear mind.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shri Shuka said -
इत्यादिश्य हृषीकेश: प्रध्माय जलजोत्तमम् ।

हर्षयन्विबुधानीकमारुरोह खगाधिपम् ॥२६॥


इति-आदिश्य हृषीकेश:
thus instructing, Shree Hari (The Controller of the senses)
प्रध्माय जलज-उत्तमम्
blowing the conch supreme
हर्षयन्-विबुध-अनीकम्-
delighting the gods' hosts
आरुरोह खग-अधिपम्
mounted the birds' King, Garuda

Thus, having instructed, Shree Hari (The Controller of the senses),and blowing the supreme conch, Paanchajanya, delighted the hosts of gods and mounted the king of the birds, Garuda.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां अष्टमे स्कन्धे गजेन्द्रमोक्षणं नाम चतुर्थ: अध्याय: ॥४॥


Thus ends the fourth discourse entitled 'The deliverance of the king of elephants' in Book Eight of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
