श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एकदा गृहदासीषु यशोदा नन्दगेहिनी ।
कर्मान्तरनियुक्तासु निर्ममन्थ स्वयं दधि ॥१॥
एकदा गृह-दासीषु
one day, the household maids
यशोदा नन्द-गेहिनी
by Yashodaa, Nanda's wife,
कर्म-अन्तर-नियुक्तासु
on work other engaged in,
निर्ममन्थ स्वयम् दधि
churned herself the curd
One day, Yashodaa, Nanda's wife engaged the house maids in other works and churned the curds herself.
यानि यानीह गीतानि तद्बालचरितानि च ।
दधि निर्मन्थने काले स्मरन्ती तान्यगायत ॥२॥
यानि यानि-इह गीतानि
those which were here sung of
तत्-बाल-चरितानि च
His childhood sports and
दधि निर्मन्थने काले
at the curds churning time
स्मरन्ती तानि-अगायत
remembering them sang
All those songs of His childhood sports which were sung of here in Vraja, at the time of churning the curds, she remembered them, and sang them.
क्षौमं वास: पृथुकटितटे बिभ्रती सूत्रनद्धं
पुत्रस्नेहस्नुतकुचयुगं जातकम्पं च सुभ्रू: ।
रज्जावकर्षश्रमभुजचलत्कङ्कणौ कुण्डले च
स्विन्नं वक्त्रं कबरविगलन्मालती निर्ममन्थ ॥३॥
क्षौमम् वास: पृथु-कटि-तटे
silk garment, on broad hips around
बिभ्रती सूत्र-नद्धम्
wearing by string tied
पुत्र-स्नेह-स्नुत-कुच-युगम्
son's affection oozing breasts pair
जात-कम्पम् च सुभ्रू:
having shivers, and beautiful eyebrows,
रज्जु-अकर्ष-श्रम-भुज-
by the (churning) string pulling, tired arms
चलत्-कङ्कणौ कुण्डले च
shaking bangles and earrings and
स्विन्नम् वक्त्रम् कबर-
sweat smeared face, from the braid
विगलन्-मालती निर्ममन्थ
falling jasmine, (she) churned
She was wearing a silk garment on her torso tied with a string. Her pair of breasts were shivering as they oozed milk for the affection of her son. The beautiful eye browed Yashodaa churned the curds, even as her arms were tired of pulling the churning string, her bangles and earrings dangled, her face was sweating and jasmine flowers fell from her braids.
तां स्तन्यकाम आसाद्य मथ्नन्तीं जननीं हरि: ।
गृहीत्वा दधिमन्थानं न्यषेधत् प्रीतिमावहन् ॥४॥
ताम् स्तन्य-काम आसाद्य
her, with suck desire approaching
मथ्नन्तीम् जननीम् हरि:
the churning mother, Shree Hari
गृहीत्वा दधि-मन्थानम्
catching the churning rod
न्यषेधत् प्रीतिम्-आवहन्
stopped, love inviting
Shree Hari desiring to suck, approached His mother churning curd and catching the churning rod stopped her, inviting her loving attention.
तमङ्कमारूढमपाययत् स्तनं स्नेहस्नुतं सस्मितमीक्षती मुखम् ।
अतृप्तमुत्सृज्य जवेन सा ययावुत्सिच्यमाने पयसि त्वधिश्रिते ॥५॥
तम्-अङ्कम्-आरूढम्-
Him on the lap climbed
अपाययत् स्तनम्
suckled the breast
स्नेह-स्नुतम्
with affection overwhelmed
सस्मितम्-ईक्षती मुखम्
smilingly watching (His) face
अतृप्तम्-उत्सृज्य
unsatisfied, leaving (Him)
जवेन सा ययौ-
quickly she went
उत्सिच्यमाने पयसि
as the overflowing milk
तु-अधिश्रिते
indeed on the oven
To Shree Krishna, who had climbed her lap, she gave her overflowing breast to suckle, as she smiling looked at His face. Leaving Him dissatisfied, she quickly went to the milk which was over boiling on the oven.
सञ्जातकोप: स्फुरितारुणाधरं संदश्य दद्भिर्दधिमन्थभाजनम् ।
भित्त्वा मृषाश्रुर्दृषदश्मना रहो जघास हैयङ्गवमन्तरं गत: ॥६॥
सञ्जात-कोप:
with aroused anger
स्फुरित-अरुण-अधरम्
quivering red lips
संदश्य दद्भि:-
biting with teeth
दधि-मन्थ-भाजनम्
the curd churning pot
भित्त्वा मृषा-अश्रु:-
breaking, false tears
दृषत्-अश्मना रह:
by a piece of stone, alone
जघास हि-अङ्गवम्-
ate indeed butter
अन्तरम् गत:
inside went
His anger was aroused, as He bit His quivering red lips with the teeth, He broke the curd churning pot with a piece of stone, and with false tears in the eyes, He went inside and ate the fresh butter alone.
उत्तार्य गोपी सुशृतं पय: पुन: प्रविश्य संदृश्य च दध्यमत्रकम् ।
भग्नं विलोक्य स्वसुतस्य कर्म तज्जहास तं चापि न तत्र पश्यती ॥७॥
उत्तार्य गोपी
putting down, the Gopi
सुशृतम् पय:
the well boiled milk
पुन: प्रविश्य संदृश्य
again entering saw
च दधि-अमत्रकम्
and the curd pot
भग्नम् विलोक्य
broken seeing
स्व-सुतस्य कर्म
own son's deed
तत्-जहास तम् च-अपि
that, laughed Him and also
न तत्र पश्यती
not there seeing
Putting down the well boiled milk, the Gopi went back and saw the pot of curd broken. She knew it to be her own Son's deed, and also not finding Him there, she laughed.
उलूखलाङ्घ्रेरुपरि व्यवस्थितं मर्काय कामं ददतं शिचि स्थितम् ।
हैयङ्गवं चौर्यविशङ्कितेक्षणं निरीक्ष्य पश्चात् सुतमागमच्छनै: ॥८॥
उलूखल-अङ्घ्रे:-उपरि

व्यवस्थितम्
standing
मर्काय कामम् ददतम्
to the monkey at will giving
शिचि स्थितम्
in the overhanging
हैयङ्गवम्
pot butter
चौर्य-विशङ्कित्-ईक्षणम्
with stealing doubtful eyes
निरीक्ष्य पश्चात्
looking, from behind
सुतम्-आगमत्-शनै:
the son approached slowly
She saw Him standing on an upturned mortar, giving fresh butter from the overhead pot to the monkey, looking around doubtfully with stealing eyes. She, then slowly approached her Son from behind.
तामात्तयष्टिं प्रसमीक्ष्य सत्वरस्ततोऽवरुह्यापससार भीतवत् ।
गोप्यन्वधावन्न यमाप योगिनां क्षमं प्रवेष्टुं तपसेरितं मन: ॥९॥
ताम्-आत्त-यष्टिम्
her, carrying a rod
प्रसमीक्ष्य सत्वर:-
watching, quickly
तत:-अवरुह्य-
from there coming down
अपससार भीतवत्
ran away terrified like
गोपी-अन्वधावत्-
Gopi followed
न यम्-आप योगिनाम्
not Whom achieve the ascetics
क्षमम् प्रवेष्टुम्
able to penetrate
तपसा-ईरितम् मन:
by asceticism concentrated minds
He, watching her carrying a rod, quickly came down from there and ran as if in fear. The Gopi followed Him, Whom even the ascetics with their asceticism trained minds are unable to penetrate, (find).
अन्वञ्चमाना जननी बृहच्चलच्छ्रोणीभराक्रान्तगति: सुमध्यमा ।
जवेन विस्रंसितकेशबन्धनच्युतप्रसूनानुगति: परामृशत् ॥१०॥
अन्वञ्चमाना जननी
following, the mother
बृहत्-चलत्-श्रोणी-भर-
bulky moving hips, by weight
आक्रान्त-गति: सुमध्यमा
slowed speed, the thin wasted
जवेन विस्रंसित
by speed loosened
केश-बन्धन-च्युत-प्रसून-
hair braid dislodged flowers
अनुगति: परामृशत्
following the steps, ultimately caught (Him)
The slender waisted mother followed Him with her bulky moving hips, the weight of which hampered her speed. By the speed of her running, the hair braid was loosened and the flowers from there fell, following her foot steps. She ultimately caught hold of Him.
कृतागसं तं प्ररुदन्तमक्षिणी कषन्तमञ्जन्मषिणी स्वपाणिना ।
उद्वीक्षमाणं भयविह्वलेक्षणं हस्ते गृहीत्वा भिषयन्त्यवागुरत् ॥११॥
कृत-अगसम् तम् प्ररुदन्तम्-
committed offence, Him crying bitterly
अक्षिणी कषन्तम्-अञ्जन्-
eyes rubbing, by the corrilium
मषिणी स्व-पाणिना
blackened, by own hands
उद्वीक्षमाणम्
upwards looking
भय-विह्वल-ईक्षणम्
with fear overwhelmed eyes
हस्ते गृहीत्वा
by hand catching hold of
भिषयन्ती-अवागुरत्
threatened and scolded
He, having committed an offence, was crying bitterly and rubbed His eyes with His hands so that the corrilium of the eyes was spread on the face. With eyes overwhelmed with fear, He looked upwards as His mother held Him by the hand and threatened and scolded Him.
त्यक्त्वा यष्टिं सुतं भीतं विज्ञायार्भकवत्सला ।
इयेष किल तं बद्धुं दाम्नातद्वीर्यकोविदा ॥१२॥
त्यक्त्वा यष्टिम् सुतम् भीतम्
discarding the rod, the son afraid
विज्ञाय-अर्भक-वत्सला
knowing, to the son affectionate,
इयेष किल तम् बद्धुम्
she decided indeed, Him to tie
दाम्ना-अतत्-वीर्य-कोविदा
with a rope, not His glory knowing
Aware that the Son was very afraid, Yashodaa, affectionate to her Son, discarded the rod, and instead thought of tying Him with a rope, not knowing His glory.
न चान्तर्न बहिर्यस्य न पूर्वं नापि चापरम् ।
पूर्वापरं बहिश्चान्तर्जगतो यो जगच्च य: ॥१३॥
न च-अन्त:-न बहि:-यस्य
not and inside, not outside Whose
न पूर्वम् न-अपि च-अपरम्
not before not also and behind
पूर्व-अपरम् बहि:-च-अन्त:-
before, after, outside and inside (of the universe)
जगत: य: जगत्-च य:
exists Who, universe and Who is
There is not an inside or an outside Whose, neither a before nor an after. Yet Who is inside, outside before and after of the universe, rather Who is The universe itself.
तं मत्वाऽऽत्मजमव्यक्तं मर्त्यलिङ्गमधोक्षजम् ।
गोपिकोलूखले दाम्ना बबन्ध प्राकृतं यथा ॥१४॥
तम् मत्वा-आत्मजम्-अव्यक्तम्
Him considering a son, The Unmanifest,
मर्त्य-लिङ्गम्-अधोक्षजम्
mortal form, beyond sense perception,
गोपिका-उलूखले दाम्ना
the Gopi to the mortar, with a rope
बबन्ध प्राकृतम् यथा
tied, a human (child) like
Him, The Unmanifest Lord, Who is beyond sense perception, considering to be her Son, the Gopi proceeded to tie Him with a rope to the mortar, like a human child.
तद् दाम बध्यमानस्य स्वार्भकस्य कृतागस: ।
द्व्यङ्गुलोनमभूत्तेन सन्दधेऽन्यच्च गोपिका ॥१५॥
तद् दाम बध्यमानस्य
that rope tying with
स्व-अर्भकस्य कृत-आगस:
own Son, committed offence
द्वि-अङ्गुल-ऊनम्-अभूत्-
two fingers short became,
तेन सन्दधे-अन्यत्-
therefore, added other
च गोपिका
and the Gopi
As she was tying her own Son who had committed an offence, with the rope, it became two fingers short. Therefore, the Gopi Yashodaa added another one to it.
यदाऽऽसीत्तदपि न्यूनं तेनान्यदपि सन्दधे ।
तदपि द्व्यङ्गुलं न्यूनं यद् यदादत्त बन्धनम् ॥१६॥
यदा-आसीत्-तत्-अपि न्यूनम्
when became that also short
तेन-अन्यत्-अपि सन्दधे
with that other also added,
तत्-अपि द्वि-अङ्गुलम् न्यूनम्
that also by two fingers short
यत् यत्-आदत्त बन्धनम्
that which was added to the tying rope
When that also became short, another one was added to it, that also was short by two fingers. As many pieces were added to the tying rope, they fell short.
एवं स्वगेहदामानि यशोदा सन्दधत्यपि ।
गोपीनां सुस्मयन्तीनां स्मयन्ती विस्मिताभवत् ॥१७॥
एवम् स्व-गेह-दामानि
in this manner of own house the ropes
यशोदा सन्दधती-अपि
Yashodaa, adding on also
गोपीनाम् सुस्मयन्तीनाम्
the Gopis' sweetly smiling
स्मयन्ती विस्मिता-अभवत्
smilingly, amazed became
In this manner, Yashodaa added on all the ropes of her own house. The Gopis sweetly smiled at her plight, and she also smiled as she became amazed.
स्वमातु: स्विन्नगात्राया विस्रस्तकबरस्रज: ।
दृष्ट्वा परिश्रमं कृष्ण: कृपयाऽऽसीत् स्वबन्धने ॥१८॥
स्व-मातु: स्विन्न-गात्राया
own mother, perspiration bodied
विस्रस्त-कबर-स्रज:
dishevelled braids' garlands
दृष्ट्वा परिश्रमम् कृष्ण:
perceiving, the exertion, Krishna
कृपया-आसीत् स्वबन्धने
compassionately, came into (His) own bondage
Krishna perceived that his mother's body was full of perspiration, and that the garlands of her braid were dishevelled by her great exertion, He, then compassionately, came into His own bondage.
एवं संदर्शिता ह्यङ्ग हरिणा भृत्यवश्यता ।
स्ववशेनापि कृष्णेन यस्येदं सेश्वरं वशे ॥१९॥
एवम् संदर्शिता हि-अङ्ग
thus, demonstrated indeed, O Dear One!
हरिणा भृत्य-वश्यता
by Shree Hari of the devotee's control
स्व-वशेन-अपि कृष्णेन
own control though, by Krishna
यस्य-इदम् स-ईश्वरम् वशे
Whose this , with the ruler is in control
O Dear Pareekshit! Thus, indeed by Shree Hari was demonstrated the control of the devotees on Himself. Though Krishna is in His own control, the universe along with its rulers, Lord Shiva and Brahmaa, are in His control.
नेमं विरिञ्चो न भवो न श्रीरप्यङ्गसंश्रया ।
प्रसादं लेभिरे गोपी यत्तत् प्राप विमुक्तिदात् ॥२०॥
न-इमम् विरिञ्च:
not this, Brahmaa,
न भव: न श्री:-अपि-
not Shiva, not Shree even
अङ्ग-संश्रया
His person's part
प्रसादम् लेभिरे
grace received
गोपी यत्-तत्-प्राप
Gopi which that attained
विमुक्तिदात्
from The Liberation Bestower
Neither Brahmaa, nor Shiva, not even Shree, the part of His person, receive such grace, like that which was attained by the Gopi Yashodaa, from The Liberation Bestower.
नायं सुखापो भगवान् देहिनां गोपिकासुत: ।
ज्ञानिनां चात्मभूतानां यथा भक्तिमतामिह ॥२१॥
न-अयम् सुख-आप: भगवान्
not He happily attainable, The Lord
देहिनाम् गोपिका-सुत:
to human beings, Gopi's Son
ज्ञानिनाम् च-आत्म-भूतानाम्
to the wise and to the Self indentified
यथा भक्तिमताम्-इह
like to the devotees here
The Lord, The Son of the Gopi Yashodaa, is not happily attainable for the human beings, the wise people or those identified with the Self, as easily as He is to the devotees, here.
कृष्णस्तु गृहकृत्येषु व्यग्रायां मातरि प्रभु: ।
अद्राक्षीदर्जुनौ पूर्वं गुह्यकौ धनदात्मजौ ॥२२॥
कृष्ण:-तु गृह-कृत्येषु
Krishna, then, in household work
व्यग्रायाम् मातरि प्रभु:
engrossed mother, The Lord
अद्राक्षीत्-अर्जुनौ पूर्वम्
noticed two Arjuna (trees), in past life
गुह्यकौ धनद-आत्मजौ
Yakshas, of Kubera the sons
When the mother was engrossed in the household work, Lord Krishna noticed two Arjuna trees, which in their past life were Yakshas, and sons of Kubera.
पुरा नारदशापेन वृक्षतां प्रापितौ मदात् ।
नलकूबरमणिग्रीवाविति ख्यातौ श्रियान्वितौ ॥२३॥
पुरा नारद-शापेन
in the past, by Naarada's curse
वृक्षताम् प्रापितौ मदात्
to the state of tree attained, by arrogance
नलकूबर-मणिग्रीवौ-इति
Nalakoobara, Maneegreeva, thus
ख्यातौ श्रिया-अन्वितौ
well known, with splendour endowed
In the past, they were well known as Nalakoobara and Maneegreeva, and were endowed with splendour. Because of their arrogance, they were reduced to the state of trees, by the curse of Naarada.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे गोपीप्रसादो नाम नवम: अध्याय: ॥९॥
Thus ends the ninth discourse entitled Grace (showered) on the cowherd lady (Yashoda), in the first half of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
