श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
गोपा नन्दादय: श्रुत्वा द्रुमयो: पततो रवम् ।
तत्राजग्मु: कुरुश्रेष्ठ निर्घातभयशङ्किता: ॥१॥
गोपा: नन्द-आदय: श्रुत्वा
the Gopas, Nanda and others, hearing
द्रुमयो: पतत: रवम्
of the two trees' falling loud sound
तत्र-आजग्मु: कुरुश्रेष्ठ
there came, O foremost of the Kurus!
निर्घात-भय-शङ्किता:
of thunderbolt fear doubting
Nanda and the other Gopas, heard the loud sound of the falling of the trees and came there, doubting and afraid of a thunderbolt.
भूम्यां निपतितौ तत्र ददृशुर्यमलार्जुनौ ।
बभ्रमुस्तदविज्ञाय लक्ष्यं पतनकारणम् ॥२॥
भूम्याम् निपतितौ तत्र
on the ground fallen, there,
ददृशु:-यमल-अर्जुनौ
saw Yamala and Arjuna
बभ्रमु:-तत्-अविज्ञाय
were confused that not knowing,
लक्ष्यम् पतन-कारणम्
present, the falling reason
They were confused to see the fallen Yamala and Arjuna. Not knowing the reason, even if they could see the cause to be present.
उलूखलं विकर्षन्तं दाम्ना बद्धं च बालकम् ।
कस्येदं कुत आश्चर्यमुत्पात इति कातरा: ॥३॥
उलूखलम् विकर्षन्तम्
the mortar dragging
दाम्ना बद्धम् च बालकम्
by the rope tied, and the child
कस्य-इदम् कुत: आश्चर्यम्-
whose this (work), how come this strange (thing)
उत्पात: इति कातरा:
evil mischief, thus bewildered
They saw the child tied to the mortar with a rope and dragging it. They were appalled to see such a strange sight and were afraid of some evil mischief.
बाला ऊचुरनेनेति तिर्यग्गतमुलूखलम् ।
विकर्षता मध्यगेन पुरुषावप्यचक्ष्महि ॥४॥
बाला ऊचु:-अनेन-इति
the children said, by Him this
तिर्यक्-गतम्-उलूखलम्
enslanted gone mortar
विकर्षता मध्यगेन
by dragging in between
पुरुषौ-अपि-अचक्ष्महि
men two also we saw
The onlooker children said, 'By Him, dragging the mortar in a slanting position, and going in-between the trees, this happened. We also saw two men coming out from the trees.'
न ते तदुक्तं जगृहुर्न घटेतेति तस्य तत् ।
बालस्योत्पाटनम् तर्वो: केचित् सन्दिग्धचेतस: ॥५॥
न ते तत्-उक्तम् जगृहु:-
not they, that told, accept
न घटेत-इति तस्य तत्
does not happen, thus, of that, that,
बालस्य-उत्पाटनम् तर्वो:
the child uprooting of trees
केचित् सन्दिग्ध-चेतस:
some with doubtful minds
They did not accept what they were told by the onlooker children, because it does not happen that a child can uproot trees. Some who knew of the other deeds of the child, stood with doubtful minds.
उलूखलं विकर्षन्तं दाम्ना बद्धं स्वमात्मजम् ।
विलोक्य नन्द: प्रहसद्वदनो विमुमोच ह ॥६॥
उलूखलम् विकर्षन्तम्

स्वम्-आत्मजम् विलोक्य

Nanda, laughing face
विमुमोच ह
freed him, indeed
Nanda, seeing his own son tied with a rope to the mortar and dragging it, with a laughing face freed Him indeed.
गोपीभि: स्तोभितोऽनृत्यद् भगवान् बालवत् क्वचित् ।
उद्गायति क्वचिन्मुग्धस्तद्वशो दारुयन्त्रवत् ॥७॥
गोपीभि: स्तोभित:-
by the Gopis prodded
अनृत्यत् भगवान्

बालवत् क्वचित्
child like sometimes
उद्गायति क्वचित्-
sang loudly sometimes
मुग्ध:-तत्-वश:
enchanted in their command
दारु-यन्त्रवत्
wooden puppet like
The Lord, prodded by the Gopis, sometimes danced and some times sang loudly like a mortal child. Enchanted and at their command, he behaved like a wooden puppet.
बिभर्ति क्वचिदाज्ञप्त: पीठकोन्मानपादुकम् ।
बाहुक्षेपं च कुरुते स्वानां च प्रीतिमावहन् ॥८॥
बिभर्ति क्वचित्-आज्ञप्त:
carries sometimes, ordered,
पीठक:-उन्मान-पादुकम्
wooden stool, measures, wooden sandals
बाहु-क्षेपम् च कुरुते स्वानाम्
arms beating and does own
च प्रीतिम्-आवहन्
and delight bringing (to them)
He, ordered by them, sometimes carries a wooden stool, measures, and wooden sandals. Sometimes beating His own arms, He brings delight to the kinsmen.
दर्शयंस्तद्विदां लोक आत्मनो भृत्यवश्यताम् ।
व्रजस्योवाह वै हर्षं भगवान् बालचेष्टितै: ॥९॥
दर्शयन्-तत्-विदाम् लोके
exhibiting to Him knowing, the people
आत्मन: भृत्य-वश्यताम्
to own devotees enslavement
व्रजस्य-उवाह वै हर्षम्
of Vraja's increasing the joy
भगवान् बाल-चेष्टितै:
The Lord by childhood pranks
The Lord, by doing so, exhibited to the people who knew His reality, His enslavement towards His devotees. And enhanced the joy of the people of Vraja by His childhood pranks.
क्रीणीहि भो: फलानीति श्रुत्वा सत्वरमच्युत: ।
फलार्थी धान्यमादाय ययौ सर्वफलप्रद: ॥१०॥
क्रीणीहि भो: फलान्-
’Buy O fruits'
इति श्रुत्वा सत्वरम्-अच्युत:
this hearing, quickly, Lord Krishna
फल-अर्थी धान्यम्-
fruits wanting, grains
आदाय ययौ सर्व-फल-प्रद:
taking went, the all fruits Dispenser
'O! buy fruits', hearing this, Lord Krishna, The Dispenser of all fruits (of actions), wanting fruits, went quickly carrying some grains.
फल विक्रयिणी तस्य च्युतधान्यं करद्वयम् ।
फलैरपूरयद् रत्नै: फलभाण्डमपूरि च ॥११॥
फल विक्रयिणी तस्य
the fruit seller woman, His,
च्युत-धान्यम् कर-द्वयम्
fallen grains, from hands two
फलै:-अपूरयत् रत्नै:
with fruits filled with gems
फल-भाण्डम्-अपूरि च
the fruit basket filled and
The lady fruit seller, then, filled His two hands with fruits from which the grains had fallen, and the fruit basket got filled with gems.
सरित्तीरगतं कृष्णं भग्नार्जुनमथाह्वयत् ।
रामं च रोहिणी देवी क्रीडन्तं बालकैर्भृशम् ॥१२॥
सरित्-तीर-गतम् कृष्णम्
to the river's bank gone Krishna
भग्न-अर्जुनम्-अथ-आह्वयत्
having broken the Arjuna (trees), then called
रामम् च रोहिणी देवी
Raama and Rohinee Devi
क्रीडन्तम् बालकै:-भृशम्
playing with children many
After the Arjuna trees were felled, Rohinee Devi called after Krishna and Raama, who were playing with many children on the river bank.
नोपेयातां यदाऽऽहूतौ क्रीडासङ्गेन पुत्रकौ ।
यशोदां प्रेषयामास रोहिणी पुत्रवत्सलाम् ॥१३॥
न-उपेयाताम् यदा-आहूतौ
did not come, when called
क्रीडा-सङ्गेन पुत्रकौ
in play engrossed, the two Sons
यशोदाम् प्रेषयामास
Yashodaa sent
रोहिणी पुत्र-वत्सलाम्
Rohinee, to the son attached
Engrossed in play, when the two sons did not come even when called, Rohinee sent Yashodaa who was very attached to the son to call them.
क्रीडन्तं सा सुतं बालैरतिवेलं सहाग्रजम् ।
यशोदाजोहवीत् कृष्णं पुत्रस्नेहस्नुतस्तनी ॥१४॥
क्रीडन्तम् सा सुतम् बालै:-
(Him) playing, she, the son with children
अतिवेलम् सह-अग्रजम्
for long, with the elder brother
यशोदा-अजोहवीत् कृष्णम्
Yashodaa called Krishna,
पुत्र-स्नेह स्नुत-स्तनी
son's affection (caused) oozing breasted
Yashodaa called her Son Krishna, Who, for long, was playing with the children and the elder brother, her breasts oozing milk for the Son's affection.
कृष्ण कृष्णारविन्दाक्ष तात एहि स्तनं पिब ।
अलं विहारै: क्षुत्क्षान्त: क्रीडाश्रान्तोऽसि पुत्रक ॥१५॥
कृष्ण कृष्ण-अरविन्द-अक्ष
'Krishna! Krishna! O Lotus-eyed!
तात एहि स्तनम् पिब
O Dear! Come, the breast suck,
अलम् विहारै: क्षुत्-क्षान्त:
enough of playing, by hunger emaciated
क्रीडा-श्रान्त:-असि पुत्रक
by play exhausted are O Son!'
'Krishna! Krishna! O Lotus-eyed! O Dear! Come, suck the breast. Enough of playing, you are emaciated by hunger and are exhausted by play, O Son!'
हे रामागच्छ ताताशु सानुज: कुलनन्दन ।
प्रातरेव कृताहारस्तद् भवान् भोक्तुमर्हति ॥१६॥
हे राम-आगच्छ तात-
O Raama! Come, O Dear!
आशु स-अनुज: कुल-नन्दन
soon, with younger brother, O Delight of the race!
प्रात:-एव कृत-आहार:-तत्
in morning only took food, so,
भवान् भोक्तुम्-अर्हति
you eat should
O Raama! O Dear! Come Soon with your younger brother. O Delight of the race! in morning only you took food, so, you should eat now.
प्रतीक्षते त्वां दाशार्ह भोक्ष्यमाणो व्रजाधिप: ।
एह्यावयो: प्रियं धेहि स्वगृहान् यात बालका: ॥१७॥
प्रतीक्षते त्वाम् दाशार्ह:
awaits you, The Scion of Dashaarha,
भोक्ष्यमाण: व्रज-अधिप:
in order to eat, Vraja's Ruler
एहि-आवयो: प्रियम् धेहि
come, of both of us, desired do
स्व-गृहान् यात बालका:
to own houses go children
The Scion of Dashaarha, Vraja's Ruler, awaits you, in order to eat. Do the desired for both of us. O children! Return to your own houses.
धूलिधूसरिताङ्गस्त्वं पुत्र मञ्जनमावह ।
जन्मर्क्षमद्य भवतो विप्रेभ्यो देहि गा: शुचि: ॥१८॥
धूलि-धूसरित-अङ्ग:-त्वम्
dust soiled bodied you,
पुत्र मञ्जनम्-आवह
O Son! bath take
जन्म-ऋम्-अद्य भवत:
birth star today of yours
विप्रेभ्य: देहि गा: शुचि:
to the Braahmanas give cows purified
O Son! You are dust soiled bodied, take a bath. Today is your birth star day, so purified, give cows to the Braahmanas.
पश्य पश्य वयस्यांस्ते मातृमृष्टान् स्वलङ्कृतान् ।
त्वं च स्नात: कृताहारो विहरस्व स्वलङ्कृत: ॥१९॥
पश्य पश्य वयस्यान्-ते
'O Look, playmates your
मातृ-मृष्टान् सु-अलङ्कृतान्
by mothers bathed, well adorned
त्वम् च स्नात: कृत-आहार:
you also and bathed and having eaten,
विहरस्व सु-अलङ्कृत:
play, well-adorned
'O Look, your playmates are bathed by their mothers and are well adorned. You also having bathed and eaten and well adorned, may play.'
इत्थं यशोदा तमशेषशेखरं मत्वा सुतं स्नेहनिबद्धधीर्नृप ।
हस्ते गृहीत्वा सहराममच्युतं नीत्वा स्ववाटं कृतवत्यथोदयम् ॥२०॥
इत्थम् यशोदा तम्-
thus, Yashodaa, Him
अशेष-शेखरम् मत्वा सुतम्
of All, the Crown, thinking, the son,
स्नेह-निबद्ध-धी: नृप
with affection attached mind, O King!
हस्ते गृहीत्वा सह-रामम्-
by the hand holding, with Raama,
अच्युतम् नीत्वा स्व-वाटम्
Krishna taking to own house
कृतवती-अथ-उदयम्
conducted then the rite (of well-being)
O King! In this manner, Yashoda, with a mind bound with affection, thinking her son to be the Crown of All, took Krishna along with Balaraama to her own house, holding them by their hands, and conducted the rites of well-being for them.
गोपवृद्धा: महोत्पाताननुभूय बृहद्वने ।
नन्दादय: समागम्य व्रजकार्यममन्त्रयन् ॥२१॥
गोप-वृद्धा: महा-उत्पातान्-
the cowherds elderly, grave unpleasant happenings
अनुभूय बृहद्वने
experiencing in Brihad-vana, (Gokula)
नन्द-आदय: समागम्य
Nanda and others, assembled
व्रज-कार्यम्-अमन्त्रयन्
for Vraja to be done, discussed
Experiencing the grave unpleasant happenings taking place in Brihad-vana, Gokula, the elderly cowherds, Nanda and others, assembled to discuss what had to be done for Vraja.
तत्रोपनन्दनामाऽऽह गोपो ज्ञानवयोऽधिक: ।
देशकालार्थतत्त्वज्ञ: प्रियकृद् रामकृष्णयो: ॥२२॥
तत्र-उपनन्द-नामा-आह
there, Upananda named, said,
गोप: ज्ञान-वय:-अधिक:
in wisdom and age more
देश-काल-अर्थ-तत्त्वज्ञ:
of place, time and things nature knowing,
प्रिय-कृत् राम-कृष्णयो:
well wisher of Raama and Krishna
There, among them was a cowherd, advanced in wisdom and age, the knower of the nature of place, time and things, and the well-wisher of Raama and Krishna, named Upananda, who said,…
उत्थातव्यमितोऽस्माभिर्गोकुलस्य हितैषिभि: ।
आयान्त्यत्र महोत्पाता बालानां नाशहेतव: ॥२३॥
उत्थातव्यम्-इत:-अस्माभि:-
should leave from here, by us
गोकुलस्य हितैषिभि:
of Gokula the well-wishers
आयान्ति-अत्र महा-उत्पाता:
are present here grave mishappennings
बालानाम् नाश-हेतव:
for the children's' harm causing
We, the well-wishers of Gokula should move away from here, as there are grave mis-happenings taking place here, which may cause harm to the children.
मुक्त: कथञ्चिद् राक्षस्या बालघ्न्या बालको ह्यसौ ।
हरेरनुग्रहान्नूनमनश्चोपरि नापतत् ॥२४॥
मुक्त: कथञ्चिद् राक्षस्या
freed somehow from the demoness,
बालघ्न्या बालक: हि-असौ
the child-killer, child indeed this,
हरे:-अनुग्रहात्-नूनम्-
by Lord Shree Hari's grace, surely
अन:-च-उपरि न-अपतत्
the cart and on (Him) did not fall
This child, indeed, somehow escaped from the child-killer demoness. Surely, by the grace of Lord Shree Hari the cart did not fall on Him.
चक्रवातेन नीतोऽयं दैत्येन विपदं वियत् ।
शिलायां पतितस्तत्र परित्रात: सुरेश्वरै: ॥२५॥
चक्रवातेन नीत:-अयम्
by the whirl wind taken away He,
दैत्येन विपदम् वियत्
by the demon, in danger in the sky
शिलायाम् पतित:-तत्र
on the rock falling, there
परित्रात: सुर-ईश्वरै:
was saved by the gods and The Lord
He was dangerously taken away into the sky by the demon whirl wind. He was just saved by the gods and The Lord as He fell on the rocks.
यन्न म्रियेत द्रुमयोरन्तरं प्राप्य बालक: ।
असावन्यतमो वापि तदप्यच्युतरक्षणम् ॥२६॥
यत्-न म्रियेत द्रुमयो:-
that, did not die, of the two trees
अन्तरम् प्राप्य बालक:
middle entering, the child
असौ-अन्यतम: वा-अपि
this, any other or also
तत्-अपि-अच्युत-रक्षणम्
that also, The Immortal Lord Vishnu's protection
That, even as He entered between the two trees, this child or any other child did not die, is also by the protection of The Immortal Lord Vishnu.
यावदौत्पातिकोऽरिष्टो व्रजं नाभिभवेदित: ।
तावद् बालानुपादाय यास्यामोऽन्यत्र सानुगा: ॥२७॥
यावत्-औत्पातिक:-अरिष्ट:
until mishappennings of evil nature,
व्रजम् न-अभिभवेत्-इत:
Vraja does not overtake, from here
तावद् बालान्-उपादाय
till then, the children carrying (we)
यास्याम:-अन्यत्र स-अनुगा:
will go, somewhere, along with (our) followers
So long that the mishappennings of an evil nature do not overtake Vraja, we will relocate to another place, carrying our children and taking our followers with us.
वनं वृन्दावनं नाम पशव्यं नवकाननम् ।
गोपगोपीगवां सेव्यं पुण्याद्रितृणवीरुधम् ॥२८॥
वनम् वृन्दावनम् नाम
a forest Vrindaavana named
पशव्यम् नव-काननम्
for cattle good, fresh woodlands
गोप-गोपी-गवाम् सेव्यम्
by the Gopas and Gopis cows inhabitable
पुण्य-अद्रि-तृण-वीरुधम्
with pure mountains, grass and trees
There is a forest named Vrindaavana, with fresh woodlands, which is good for the cattle, and inhabitable for the Gopas, Gopis and the cows. It has pure mountains, grass and trees.
तत्तत्राद्यैव यास्याम: शकटान् युङ्क्त मा चिरम् ।
गोधनान्यग्रतो यान्तु भवतां यदि रोचते ॥२९॥
तत्-तत्र-अद्य-एव यास्याम:
so, there, today only will go
शकटान् युङ्क्त मा चिरम्
the carts get ready, without delay
गो-धनानि-अग्रत: यान्तु
the cattle wealth before may proceed
भवताम् यदि रोचते
to you all if it pleases
So, we will go there today itself. Get the carts ready without delay. If it pleases you all, the cattle wealth may proceed before us.
तच्छ्रुत्वैकधियो गोपा: साधु साध्विति वादिन: ।
व्रजान् स्वान् स्वान् समायुज्य ययू रूढपरिच्छदा: ॥३०॥
तत्-श्रुत्वा एक-धिय: गोपा:
that hearing, the one minded Gopas
साधु साधु-इति वादिन:
'Good, good!' thus saying
व्रजान् स्वान् स्वान् समायुज्य
herds own, own getting together
ययू: रूढ-परिच्छदा:
went loaded with articles
Hearing that, the one minded Gopas said, 'Good, good', and getting together their herds, they went with articles loaded on the carts.
वृद्धान् बालान् स्त्रियो राजन् सर्वोपकरणानि च ।
अनस्स्वारोप्य गोपाला यत्ता आत्तशरासना: ॥३१॥
वृद्धान् बालान् स्त्रिय:
the aged, children, women
राजन् सर्व-उपकरणानि च
O King! all articles and
अनस्सु-आरोप्य गोपाला:
on the carts loading, the cowherds,
यत्ता: आत्त-शरासना:
alert, carried bows and arrows
O King! The cowherds put the aged, children and women on the carriages and also loaded the articles, and with alertness, they went carrying bows and arrows.
गोधनानि पुरस्कृत्य शृङ्गाण्यापूर्य सर्वत: ।
तूर्यघोषेण महता ययु: सहपुरोहिता: ॥३२॥
गोधनानि पुरस्कृत्य
the wealth of cattle placing before
शृङ्गाणि-आपूर्य सर्वत:
horns blowing all around
तूर्य-घोषेण महता
with trumpet sound loud
ययु: सह-पुरोहिता:
went with the priests
They placed the wealth of cattle in front, blowing the horns all around, sounding the trumpets aloud, they went along with the priests.
गोप्यो रूढरथा नूत्नकुचकुङ्कुमकान्तय: ।
कृष्णलीला जगु: प्रीता निष्ककण्ठ्य: सुवासस: ॥३३॥
गोप्य: रूढ-रथा:
the Gopis mounted on the chariots
नूत्न-कुच-कुङ्कुम-कान्तय:
with fresh breast saffron splendid
कृष्ण-लीला जगु: प्रीता:
Krishna's sportings sang with delight
निष्क-कण्ठ्य: सु-वासस:
golden (chains) in neck, well-dressed
The well dressed Gopis, splendid with fresh saffron paste on the breasts, with golden chains in their necks, were mounted on the chariots, and sang of the sportings of Shree Krishna with delight.
तथा यशोदारोहिण्यावेकं शकटमास्थिते ।
रेजतु: कृष्णरामाभ्यां तत्कथाश्रवणोत्सुके ॥३४॥
तथा यशोदा-रोहिण्यौ-
thus, Yashodaa and Rohinee, (both)
एकम् शकटम्-आस्थिते
in one cart sitting
रेजतु: कृष्ण-रामाभ्याम्
shone with Krishna and Balaraama
तत्-कथा-श्रवण-उत्सुके
their stories to hear eager
Thus, Yashodaa and Rohinee seated on one cart, shone with Krishna and Balaraama, eager to hear their stories.
वृन्दावनं संप्रविश्य सर्वकालसुखावहम् ।
तत्र चक्रुर्व्रजावासं शकटैरर्धचन्द्रवत् ॥३५॥
वृन्दावनम् संप्रविश्य
Vrindaavana, on entering
सर्व-काल-सुख-आवहम्
at all times happiness giving
तत्र चक्रु:-व्रज-आवासम्
there made the cattle's settlement
शकटै:-अर्ध-चन्द्रवत्
by the carts in crescent shaped moon
The cowherds entered Vrindaavana, which is delightful in all seasons. There, they set up the setting for the cattle with the carts placed in the form of crescent shaped moon.
वृन्दावनं गोवर्धनं यमुनापुलिनानि च ।
वीक्ष्यासीदुत्तमा प्रीती राममाधवयोर्नृप ॥३६॥
वृन्दावनम् गोवर्धनम्
Vrindaavana, Govardhana,
यमुना-पुलिनानि च
Yamuna's banks and
वीक्ष्य-आसीत्-उत्तमा प्रीति:
watching, became supreme joy
राम-माधवयो:-नृप
of Raama and Maadhava, O King!
O King! As Raama and Maadhava watched the forest of Vrindaavana, the mountain Govardhana and the banks of river Yamunaa, they became over joyed.
एवं व्रजौकसां प्रीतिं यच्छन्तौ बालचेष्टितै: ।
कलवाक्यै: स्वकालेन वत्सपालौ बभूवतु: ॥३७॥
एवम् व्रज-औकसाम् प्रीतिम्
thus, to the Vraja residents delight
यच्छन्तौ बाल-चेष्टितै:
giving by child-ish pranks
कल-वाक्यै: स्व-कालेन
and prattling words, in own time
वत्स-पालौ बभूवतु:
calf care-takers became
Thus, they gave delight to the residents of Vraja with their childish gestures, and prattling words, and in their own time became the care-takers of calves.
अविदूरे व्रजभुव: सह गोपालदारकै: ।
चारयामासतुर्वत्सान् नानाक्रीडापरिच्छदौ ॥३८॥
अ-विदूरे व्रज-भुव:
not far from the cow sheds
सह गोपाल-दारकै:
with the cowherd boys
चारयामासतु:-वत्सान्
pastured the calves
नाना-क्रीडा-परिच्छदौ
(carrying) various play things
Both of them, with the cowherd boys, carried various playthings, and pastured the calves not very far away from the cow sheds.
क्वचिद् वाद्यतो वेणुं क्षेपणै: क्षिपत: क्वचित् ।
क्वचित् पादै: किङ्किणीभि: क्वचित् कृत्रिमगोवृषै: ॥३९॥
क्वचिद् वाद्यत: वेणुम्
sometimes played the flute
क्षेपणै: क्षिपत: क्वचित्
with stones throwing sometimes
क्वचित् पादै: किङ्किणीभि:
sometimes with feet, with tiny bells (tinkling)
क्वचित् कृत्रिम-गो-वृषै:
sometimes disguised as cows and bulls
Sometimes they played the flute, at other times they threw stones and marbles, sometimes they danced on the toes with tiny bells tied on the ankles, and at times they disguised as cows and bulls and mimicked them.
वृषायमाणौ नर्दन्तौ युयुधाते परस्परम् ।
अनुकृत्य रुतैर्जन्तूंश्चेरतु: प्राकृतौ यथा ॥४०॥
वृषायमाणौ नर्दन्तौ
bulls as disguised, bellowing
युयुधाते परस्परम्
fighting with each other
अनुकृत्य रुतै:-जन्तून्-
mimicking, the sounds of the creatures,
चेरतु: प्राकृतौ यथा
roamed humans like
Disguised as bulls, and fighting with each other, then, mimicking the sounds of the creatures, they roamed about like ordinary human children.
कदाचिद् यमुनातीरे वत्सांश्चारयतो: स्वकै: ।
वयस्यै: कृष्णबलयोर्जिघांसुर्दैत्य आगमत् ॥४१॥
कदाचिद् यमुना-तीरे
once, on Yamuna's bank
वत्सान्-चारयतो: स्वकै:
the calves grazing with own
वयस्यै: कृष्ण-बलयो:-
aged companions, to Krishna and Balaraama
जिघांसु:-दैत्य आगमत्
wanting to kill, a demon came
Once, on the banks of the river Yamuna, when They were grazing the calves with Their own companions, a demon came, wanting to kill Krishna and Balaraama.
तं वत्सरूपिणं वीक्ष्य वत्सयूथगतं हरि: ।
दर्शयन् बलदेवाय शनैर्मुग्ध इवासदत् ॥४२॥
तम् वत्स-रूपिणम् वीक्ष्य
him as a calf disguised observing,
वत्स-यूथ-आगतम् हरि:
in the calves' herd entered, Shree Hari
दर्शयन् बलदेवाय
showing to Baladeva,
शनै:-मुग्ध इव-आसदत्
slowly ignorant like approached
Shree Hari observed him entering the herd of the calves, disguised as a calf. He showed him to Baladeva, and like an ignorant person, slowly approached him.
गृहीत्वापरपादाभ्यां सहलाङ्गूलमच्युत: ।
भ्रामयित्वा कपित्थाग्रे प्राहिणोद् गतजीवितम् ।
स कपित्थैर्महाकाय: पात्यमानै: पपात ह ॥४३॥
गृहीत्वा-अपर-पादाभ्याम्
holding by the hind legs
सह-लाङ्गूलम्-अच्युत:
along with the tail, The Eternal Lord
भ्रामयित्वा कपित्थ-अग्रे
hurling, on Kapittha tree
प्राहिणोद् गत-जीवितम्
flung, without life
स: कपित्थै:-महाकाय:
he, by the Kapitthas, huge bodied
पात्यमानै: पपात ह
when falling, fell indeed
The Eternal Lord got hold of him by the hind legs, along with the tail, hurled him on the top of the Kapittha trees and flung him. He with his huge body fell with the falling trees.
तं वीक्ष्य विस्मिता बाला: शशंसु: साधु साध्विति ।
देवाश्च परिसन्तुष्टा बभूवु: पुष्पवर्षिण: ॥४४॥
तम् वीक्ष्य विस्मिता: बाला:
him seeing, amazed, the children
शशंसु: साधु साधु-इति
applauded, 'Well done, well done!' thus
देवा:-च परिसन्तुष्टा:
the gods and well satisfied
बभूवु: पुष्प-वर्षिण:
became flower showerers
The children were amazed to see him, and applauded saying, 'Well done, well done!' The gods were also well satisfied and showered flowers.
तौ वत्सपालकौ भूत्वा सर्वलोकैकपालकौ ।
सप्रातराशौ गोवत्सांश्चारयन्तौ विचेरतु: ॥४५॥
तौ वत्स-पालकौ भूत्वा
they both, calf keepers becoming,
सर्व-लोक-एक-पालकौ
of all the worlds the sole Protectors
स-प्रात:-आशौ गो-वत्सान्-
with morning food the cows and calves
चारयन्तौ विचेरतु:
grazing (both) roamed
Taking on the responsibility of calf keepers, They, The sole Protectors of all the worlds, roamed about grazing the cows and calves after having the morning food.
स्वं स्वं वत्सकुलं सर्वे पाययिष्यन्त एकदा ।
गत्वा जलाशयाभ्याशं पाययित्वा पपुर्जलम् ॥४६॥
स्वम् स्वम् वत्स-कुलम्
own each one to the calf group
सर्वे पाययिष्यन्त एकदा
all wanting to make them drink (water), once
गत्वा जलाशय-अभ्याशम्
going to the pond's side
पाययित्वा पपु:-जलम्
made them drink and drank water
Once, all of them wanting to give a drink of water to their own herd of calf, went to the side of the pond and made them drink water, and themselves also had a drink of it.
ते तत्र ददृशुर्बाला महासत्त्वमवस्थितम् ।
तत्रसुर्व्रजनिर्भिन्नं गिरे: शृङ्गमिव च्युतम् ॥४७॥
ते तत्र ददृशु:-बाला:
they, there saw, the boys
महा-सत्त्वम्-अवस्थितम्
of a big form standing
तत्रसु:-व्रज-निर्भिन्नम्
frightened, by thunderbolt cut off
गिरे: शृङ्गम्-इव च्युतम्
mountain's peak like fallen
They, the boys saw there a massive form standing, like the peak of a mountain fallen, cut off by a thunderbolt, and were frightened.
स वै बको नाम महानसुरो बकरूपधृक् ।
आगत्य सहसा कृष्णं तीक्ष्णतुण्डोऽग्रसद् बली ॥४८॥
स: वै बक: नाम
he indeed Baka named
महान्-असुर: बक-रूप-धृक्
the great demon, heron form assuming
आगत्य सहसा कृष्णम्
came suddenly, Krishna
तीक्ष्ण-तुण्ड:-अग्रसद् बली
with sharp beak swallowed the powerful
Indeed, he was the great demon named Baka, disguised as a heron. He came suddenly and with his sharp bill swallowed Shri Krishna.
कृष्णं महाबकग्रस्तं दृष्ट्वा रामादयोऽर्भका: ।
बभूवुरिन्द्रियाणीव विना प्राणं विचेतस: ॥४९॥
कृष्णम् महा-बक-ग्रस्तम्
Krishna, by the huge heron swallowed
दृष्ट्वा राम-आदय:-अर्भका:
seeing, Raama and other boys,
बभूवु:-इन्द्रियाणि-इव
became senses like
विना प्राणम् विचेतस:
without life, unconscious
Raama and the other boys seeing Krishna swallowed by the huge heron, became sense-less like the senses without life.
तं तालुमूलं प्रदहन्तमग्निवद् गोपालसूनुं पितरं जगद्गुरो: ।
चच्छर्द सद्योऽतिरुषाक्षतं बकस्तुण्डेन हन्तुं पुनरभ्यपद्यत ॥५०॥
तम् तालु-मूलम्
him in the palate's root
प्रदहन्तम्-अग्नि-वत्
burning fire like
गोपाल-सूनुम्
the cowherd's Son,
पितरम् जगद्गुरो:
Father of the world's creator, (Brahmaa)
चच्छर्द सद्य:-
threw out instantly
अति-रुषा-अक्षतम्
very angrily unhurt
बक:-तुण्डेन हन्तुम्
the heron by the bill to kill
पुन:-अभ्यपद्यत
again rushed
Krishna burnt him like fire at the root of his palate. The heron instantly threw out the unhurt Father of Brahmaa, the Son the cowherd Nanda, and in great anger rushed to kill Him with its bill.
तमापतन्तं स निगृह्य तुण्डयोर्दोर्भ्यां बकं कंससखं सतां पति: ।
पश्यत्सु बालेषु ददार लीलया मुदावहो वीरणवद् दिवौकसाम् ॥५१॥
तम्-आपतन्तम् स: निगृह्य
him rushing, He seized
तुण्डयो:-दोर्भ्याम् बकम्
by the bill's two (parts), the heron,
कंस-सखम् सताम् पति:
Kansa's friend, of the righteous The Master
पश्यत्सु बालेषु ददार
looked on the by boys, split
लीलया मुद-आवह:
sportingly, delight bringing,
वीरण-वद् दिवौकसाम्
a grass like, to the celestial beings
He, The Protector of the righteous, seized the rushing heron, the friend of Kansa, by the two parts of its bill, and sportingly split it like a blade of grass, even as the boys looked on and bringing deight to the celestial beings.
तदा बकारिं सुरलोकवासिन: समाकिरन् नन्दनमल्लिकादिभि: ।
समीडिरे चानकशङ्खसंस्तवैस्तद् वीक्ष्य गोपालसुता विसिस्मिरे ॥५२॥
तदा बक-अरिम्
then, on the heron's Enemy
सुर-लोक-वासिन: समाकिरन्
the heavenly regions residents showered
नन्दन-मल्लिका-आदिभि:
Nandana (garden's) jasmine and other flowers
समीडिरे च-अनक-शङ्ख-संस्तवै:-
extolled and by drums, conch sounds
तत् वीक्ष्य गोपाल-सुता:
that observing, the cowherd boys
विसिस्मिरे
were very amazed
Then, the residents of the heavenly regions, showered flowers and jasmines from the Nandana garden (of Indra), on the Slayer of the heron, and extolled Him and sounded the drums and the conchs. The cowherd boys were very amazed to see this.
मुक्तं बकास्यादुपलभ्य बालका रामादय: प्राणमिवैन्द्रियो गण: ।
स्थानागतं तं परिरम्भ्य निर्वृता: प्रणीय वत्सान् व्रजमेत्य तज्जगु: ॥५३॥
मुक्तम् बक-आस्यात्-उपलभ्य
released from the heron's mouth finding,
बालका: राम-आदय:
the children Raama and others
प्राणम्-इव-ऐन्द्रिय: गण:
life (returned) like to the senses collective
स्थान-आगतम् तम् परिरम्भ्य
to the place coming of His, embracing,
निर्वृता: प्रणीय वत्सान्
relieved, getting together the calves
व्रजम्-एत्य तत्-जगु:
Vraja reached, all that related
The children, Raama and others were relieved, finding Him released from the mouth of the heron, just as life would return to the collective senses. They embraced Him when He came to the place. They then got together the calves and returned to Vraja and related all this incident.
श्रुत्वा तद् विस्मिता गोपा गोप्यश्चातिप्रियादृता: ।
प्रेत्यागतमिवौत्सुक्यादैक्षन्त तृषितेक्षणा: ॥५४॥
श्रुत्वा तत् विस्मिता: गोपा:
hearing that, surprised, the Gopas
गोप्य:-च-अति प्रिय-आदृता:
Gopis and with much affection greeted (by Krishna)
प्रेत्य-आगतम्-इव-औत्सुकयात्-
from dead returned like, with concern
ऐक्षन्त तृषित-ईक्षणा:
looking with thirsty eyes
The Gopas and the Gopis were greeted by the beloved Krishna, who were very surprised to hear of all that incident. They looked at Him with thirsty eyes, full of great concern, as though He had returned from the dead.
अहो बतास्य बालस्य बहवो मृत्यवोऽभवन् ।
अप्यासीद् विप्रियं तेषां कृतं पूर्वं यतो भयम् ॥५५॥
अहो बत-अस्य बालस्य
'Oh! Indeed! of this child
बहव: मृत्यव:-अभवन्
many a deaths have been
अपि-आसीद् विप्रियम् तेषाम्
also happened evil of them
कृतम् पूर्वम् यत: भयम्
had caused formerly because terror
'Oh! Indeed! This child has had many a deaths. Evil has only happened to them who have caused terror in the former life.'
अथाप्यभिभवन्त्येनं नैव ते घोरदर्शना: ।
जिघांसयैनमासाद्य नश्यन्त्यग्नौ पतङ्गवत् ॥५६॥
अथ-अपि-अभिभवन्ति-
even then, overpower Him
एनम् न-एव ते घोर-दर्शना:
not also they fierce looking
जिघांसया-एनम्-आसाद्य
desiring to kill, Him approaching
नश्यन्ति-अग्नौ पतङ्ग-वत्
are killed, in fire moths like
Even then, the fierce looking demons cannot overpower Him. When they approach Him with a desire to kill Him, they perish like moths in fire.
अहो ब्रह्मविदां वाचो नासत्या: सन्ति कर्हिचित् ।
गर्गो यदाह भगवानन्वभावि तथैव तत् ॥५७॥
अहो ब्रह्म-विदाम् वाच:
Ah! Of the Brahman knowers words
न-असत्या: सन्ति कर्हिचित्
not false are ever
गर्ग: यत्-आह भगवान्-
Garga whatever said, the lord,
अन्वभावि तथा-एव तत्
would happen, like that only that
Ah! The words of the knowers of Brahman are never ever false. What ever the worshipful Garga had predicted will happen, it all is happening like that only.
इति नन्दादयो गोपा: कृष्णरामकथां मुदा ।
कुर्वन्तो रममाणाश्च नाविन्दन् भववेदनाम् ॥५८॥
इति नन्द-आदय: गोपा:
thus, Nanda and the other Gopas,
कृष्ण-राम-कथाम् मुदा
of Krishna and Raama stories happily
कुर्वन्त: रममाणा:-च
recounting, rejoicing and
न-अविन्दन् भव-वेदनाम्
did not experience life's agonies
Thus, Nanda and the other Gopas, happily recounting the stories of Krishna and Raama and rejoicing, did not experience the agonies of life.
एवं विहारै: कौमारै: कौमारं जहतुर्व्रजे ।
निलायनै: सेतुबन्धैर्मर्कटोत्प्लवनादिभि: ॥५९॥
एवम् विहारै: कौमारै:
in this manner, in games child like
कौमारम् जहतु:-व्रजे
childhood spent in Vraja
निलायनै: सेतु-बन्धै:-
by hiding about, demy bridges building
मर्कट-उत्प्लवन-आदिभि:
monkey like jumping and others
In this manner, Krishna and Balaraama spent their childhood in Vraja, playing child like games, such as hiding about, building demy bridges, jumping like monkeys and such others.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे वत्सबकवधो नाम एकादश: अध्याय: ॥११॥
Thus ends the eleventh discourse entitled 'The destruction of Vatsaasura and Bakaasura', in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
