श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
ततश्च पौगण्डवय: श्रितौ व्रजे बभूवतुस्तौ पशुपालसम्मतौ ।
गाश्चारयन्तौ सखिभि: समं पदैर्वृन्दावनं पुण्यमतीव चक्रतु: ॥१॥
तत:-च पौगण्ड-वय:
presently and boyhood of age
श्रितौ व्रजे बभूवतु:
having come to, in Vraja, became
तौ पशुपाल-सम्मतौ
they both by the cowherds approved
गा:-चारयन्तौ सखिभि:
cow grazing, friends
समम् पदै:-वृन्दावनम्
with by their feet Vrindaavana
पुण्यम्-अतीव चक्रतु:
sacred very much rendered
Presently, they both having come to boyhood age, approved by Nanda and other cowherds, grazed the cows, and as they did so, with their feet they rendered Vrindaavana very sacred.
तन्माधवो वेणुमुदीरयन् वृतो गोपैर्गृणद्भि: स्वयशो बलान्वित: ।
पशून् पुरस्कृत्य पशव्यमाविशद् विहर्तुकाम: कुसुमाकरं वनम् ॥२॥
तत्-माधव: वेणुम्-उदीरयन्
then, Maadhava, (Krishna), flute playing,
वृत: गोपै:-गृणद्भि:
surrounded by cowherds, singing
स्व-यश: बल-अन्वित:
own praises, Balaraama along with
पशून् पुरस्कृत्य पशव्यम्-
the animals in front, suitable for cattle,
आविशद् विहर्तु-काम:
entered, to sport eager
कुसुम-आकरम् वनम्
flowers' storehouse the forest
Then, Maadhava, along with Balaraama, playing the flute, surrounded by the cowherds, who were singing His praises, with the cattle ahead, entered the forest, the storehouse of flowers, suitable for the cattle.
तन्मञ्जुघोषालिमृगद्विजाकुलं महन्मन:प्रख्यपय:सरस्वता ।
वातेन जुष्टं शतपत्रगन्धिना निरीक्ष्य रन्तुं भगवान् मनो दधे ॥३॥
तत्-मञ्जु-घोष-
that beautiful, resounding
अलि-मृग-द्विज-आकुलम्
of bees, deers, birds swarms'
महत्-मन:-प्रख्य-पय:-सरस्वता
of the virtuous minds' (like) pure, water ponds
वातेन जुष्टम् शत-पत्र-गन्धिना
with breeze carrying lotus scent
निरीक्ष्य रन्तुम्
observing, to sport
भगवान् मन: दधे
The Lord mind made up
The Lord made up His mind to sport there, with its beauty, the resounding of swarms of bees, deers, and birds, with the ponds having water pure as the minds of the exalted souls, and with breeze wafting the scent of the lotuses.
स तत्र तत्रारुणपल्लवश्रिया फलप्रसूनोरुभरेण पादयो: ।
स्पृशच्छिखान् वीक्ष्य वनस्पतीन् मुदा स्मयन्निवाहाग्रजमादिपूरुष: ॥४॥
स: तत्र तत्र-अरुण-पल्लव-
He, here and there, by reddish tender leaves
श्रिया फल-प्रसून-
beautiful, fruits flowers
उरु-भरेण पादयो:
heavy load, the feet
स्पृशत्-शिखान् वीक्ष्य
touching the tops, observing
वनस्पतीन् मुदा स्मयन्-इव-
the vegetation, delighted smiling as if
आह-अग्रजम्-आदि-पूरुष:
said to the elder brother, The Ancient Person
The Ancient Person, Shree Krishna, observed the vegetation, here and there, with trees having reddish tender leaves, boughed down with the weight of fruits and flowers, and as if smiling, touching His feet with delight, with their tops, He said to His elder brother,...
श्रीभगवान्-उवाच -
The Lord said -
अहो अमी देववरामरार्चितं पादाम्बुजं ते सुमन: फलार्हणम् ।
नमन्त्युपादाय शिखाभिरात्मनस्तमोऽपहत्यै तरुजन्म यत्कृतम् ॥५॥
अहो अमी देववर-
'O, these, O chief of the gods!
अमर-अर्चितम् पाद-अम्बुजम्
by the gods worshipped feet lotus
ते सुमन: फल-अर्हणम्
Yours, flowers and fruits as material
नमन्ति-उपादाय शिखाभि:-आत्मन:-
bow, bringing, with crowns theirs
तम:-अपहत्यै
for ignorance to ward off
तरु-जन्म यत्-कृतम्
tree birth because of which
'O Chief of gods, these trees worship Your lotus feet, which are adored by the gods, by bringing with them the fruits and flowers as materials of worship, and by bowing to You with their crowns, to ward off the ignorance because of which they are born as trees.'
एतेऽलिनस्तव यशोऽखिललोकतीर्थं गायन्त आदिपुरुषानुपदं भजन्ते ।
प्रायो अमी मुनिगणा भवदीयमुख्या गूढं वनेऽपि न जहत्यनघात्मदैवम् ॥६॥
एते-अलिन:-तव
these bumble bees, Your
यश:-अखिल-लोक-तीर्थ
fame, for the whole world holy,
गायन्त आदि-पुरुष-
singing, The Ancient Person
अनुपदम् भजन्ते
constantly worship
प्राय: अमी मुनिगणा
in as much as, these saintly people
भवदीय-मुख्या गूढम् वने-अपि
Your main (devotees), hidden in the forest also
न जहति-अनघ-आत्म- दैवम्
do not leave, O Sinless One! their own Lord
These bumble bees, constantly sing the glorious fame of The Ancient Person, You, which is holy and purifies the whole world. In as much as, they, as the saintly people, the chief among Your devotees, do not forsake You, their Lord, hidden in the forest.
नृत्यन्त्यमी शिखिन ईड्य मुदा हरिण्य: कुर्वन्ति गोप्य इव ते प्रियमीक्षणेन ।
सूक्तैश्च कोकिलगणा गृहमागताय धन्या वनौकस इयान् हि सतां निसर्ग: ॥७॥
नृत्यन्ति-अमी शिखिन:
dance these peacocks
ईड्य मुदा हरिण्य: कुर्वन्ति
O Worshipful! delighted deers do
गोप्य इव ते प्रियम्-ईक्षणेन
Gopis like, Your pleasure bring by their glances
सूक्तै:-च कोकिल-गणा
with sweet notes and the cuckoos flock
गृहम्-आगताय
for the home arrived hospitality (offer)
धन्या: वनौकस:
blessed are the forest dwellers
इयान् हि सताम् निसर्ग:
such indeed is the saint's nature
O Worshipful! The delighted peacocks dance in joy. The deers bring pleasure to You, by their glances like the glances of the Gopis. The flocks of cuckoos offer hospitality to You as You having come home. These dwellers of the forest are indeed blessed. Such is the nature of the saintly.
धन्येयमद्य धरणी तृणवीरुधस्त्वत्पादस्पृशो द्रुमलता: करजाभिमृष्टा: ।
नद्योऽद्रय: खगमृगा: सदयावलोकैर्गोप्योऽन्तरेण भुजयोरपि यत्स्पृहा श्री: ॥८॥

blessed this today
धरणी तृण-वीरुध:-
the earth, grass and shrubs
त्वत्-पाद-स्पृश:
by Your feet's' touch
द्रुम-लता: करज-अभिमृष्टा:
trees creepers by nails pinched
नद्य:-अद्रय: खग-मृगा:
rivers mountains birds and animals
सदय-अवलोकै:-
with compassion looked at
गोप्य:-अन्तरेण भुजयो:-
the Gopis by the bosom with arms
अपि यत्-स्पृहा श्री:
also what covets Laxmi
Today, this earth, grass and shrubs are blessed by the touch of Your feet, the trees and creepers by being pinched by Your nails, the rivers mountains, birds and beasts by Your compassionate glances, and the Gopis pressed to Your bosom with Your arms, which even Shree (Laxmi) covets.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं वृन्दावनं श्रीमत् कृष्ण: प्रीतमना: पशून् ।
रेमे सञ्चारयन्नद्रे: सरिद्रोधस्सु सानुग: ॥९॥
एवम् वृन्दावनम् श्रीमत्
thus, of Vrindaavana, the beautiful,
कृष्ण: प्रीतमना: पशून्
Shree Krishna, delighted at heart, the cattle
रेमे सञ्चारयन्-अद्रे:
roamed, pasturing on the mountain,
सरित्-रोधस्सु स-अनुग:
the river's banks with His followers
Thus, Shree Krishna, delighted at heart at the beauty of Vrindaavana, while pasturing the cattle, roamed near the valley of the mountain and the banks of the river with His followers.
क्वचिद् गायति गायत्सु मदान्धालिष्वनुव्रतै: ।
उपगीयमानचरित: स्रग्वी सङ्कर्षणान्वित: ॥१०॥
क्वचिद् गायति गायत्सु
somewhere sings, with the singing
मद-अन्ध-अलिषु-अनुव्रतै:
intoxication blinded bees, by the followers
उपगीयमान-चरित:
singing the exploits
स्रग्वी सङ्कर्षण-अन्वित:
garlanded Balaraama following
He, sometimes, adorning a garland, following Balaraama, sings with the bees, blinded with intoxication of the honey, and His glories being sung by the followers, cowherd boys and gods.
क्वचिच्च कलहंसानामनुकूजति कूजितम् ।
अभिनृत्यति नृत्यन्तं बर्हिणं हासयन् क्वचित् ॥११॥
क्वचित्-च कलहंसानाम्-
sometimes and of the swans
अनुकूजति कूजितम्
imitates and calls, the shrill calls
अभिनृत्यति नृत्यन्तम् बर्हिणम्
dances like the dancing peacocks
हासयन् क्वचित्
amusing them sometimes
Sometimes He imitates the shrill calls of the swans, and calls, and sometimes dances like the dancing peacocks, amusing them.
मेघगम्भीरया वाचा नामभिर्दूरगान् पशून् ।
क्वचिदाह्वयति प्रीत्या गोगोपालमनोज्ञया ॥१२॥
मेघ-गम्भीरया वाचा
in cloud (like) deep voice
नामभि:-दूरगान् पशून्
by names, far gone cows
क्वचित्-आह्वयति प्रीत्या
sometimes calls lovingly,
गो-गोपाल-मनोज्ञया
the cows and the cowherds fascinating
Sometimes, He lovingly calls the cows gone far away by their names in a deep cloud like voice, fascinating the cows and the cowherds.
चकोरक्रौञ्चचक्राह्वभारद्वाजांश्च बर्हिण: ।
अनुरौति स्म सत्त्वानां भीतवद् व्याघ्रसिंहयो: ॥१३॥
चकोर-क्रौञ्च-चक्राह्व-
the Chakoras, Kraunchas, Chakrahvas
भारद्वाजान्-च बर्हिण:
Bharadvaajas, and peacocks
अनुरौति स्म सत्त्वानाम्
imitating cries, like the living beings
भीत-वत् व्याघ्र-सिंहयो:
afraid like of the lions and tigers
He imitates the cries of the Chakoras, Kraunchas, Chakrahvas, Bharadvaajas, and peacocks, and, behaves as if afraid of the lions and tigers, like the living beings.
क्वचित् क्रीडापरिश्रान्तं गोपोत्सङ्गोपबर्हणम् ।
स्वयं विश्रमयत्यार्यं पादसंवाहनादिभि: ॥१४॥
क्वचित् क्रीडा-परिश्रान्तम्
sometimes, by play exhausted
गोप-उत्सङ्ग-उपबर्हणम् स्वयम्
of the cowherd boy's lap, pillowed Himself
विश्रमयति-आर्यम्
gives relief to the noble (Balaraama)
पाद-संवाहन-आदिभि:
by feet pressing etc.
Sometimes, when exhausted by play, Balaraama would rest lying with his head rested on the pillowed lap of a cowherd boy, He would give relief by pressing the feet Himself and by other services.
नृत्यतो गायत: क्वापि वल्गतो युध्यतो मिथ: ।
गृहीतहस्तौ गोपालान् हसन्तौ प्रशशंसतु: ॥१५॥
नृत्यत: गायत: क्व-अपि
dancing, singing, sometimes
वल्गत: युध्यत: मिथ:
running, wrestling mutually
गृहीत-हस्तौ गोपालान्
holding hands the cowherd boys
हसन्तौ प्रशशंसतु:
laughed at and applauded
They sometimes mutually held hands, as they laughed and applauded the dancing, singing, running and wrestling cowherd boys.
क्वचित् पल्लवतल्पेषु नियुद्धश्रमकर्शित: ।
वृक्षमूलाश्रय: शेते गोपोत्सङ्गोपबर्हण: ॥१६॥
क्वचित् पल्लव-तल्पेषु
sometimes, on tender leaves' bed
नियुद्ध-श्रम-कर्शित:
after a combat, fatigued and weak
वृक्ष-मूल-आश्रय: शेते
in the root of a tree rested sleeps
गोप-उत्सङ्ग-उपबर्हण:
on a cowherd boys lap pillowed
Sometimes, fatigued and exhausted, after a combat, at the root of a tree He would sleep on the bed of tender leaves, with His head rested in the pillowed lap of a cowherd boy.
पादसंवाहनं चक्रु: केचित्तस्य महात्मन: ।
अपरे हतपाप्मानो व्यजनै: समवीजयन् ॥१७॥
पाद-संवाहनम् चक्रु:
feet pressing did
केचित्-तस्य महात्मन:
some, His, The Great Soul's
अपरे हत-पाप्मान:
others devoid of sinful minds
व्यजनै: समवीजयन्
by fans, fanned (Him)
Some of the cowherds pressed the feet of The Great Soul, and some whose minds were devoid of sins, fanned Him with fans.
अन्ये तदनुरूपाणि मनोज्ञानि महात्मन: ।
गायन्ति स्म महाराज स्नेहक्लिन्नधिय: शनै: ॥१८॥
अन्ये तत्-अनुरूपाणि
others, His according to
मनोज्ञानि महात्मन:
pleasing mind, The Great Soul
गायन्ति स्म महाराज
sang, O Great King!
स्नेह-क्लिन्न-धिय: शनै:
with love obsessed mind, slowly
O Great King! Others, with love obsessed minds, softly sang songs according to his liking, pleasing The Great Soul.
एवं निगूढात्मगति: स्वमायया गोपात्मजत्वं चरितैर्विडम्बयन् ।
रेमे रमालालितपादपल्लवो ग्राम्यै: समं ग्राम्यवदीशचेष्टित: ॥१९॥
एवम् निगूढ-आत्म-गति:
thus covering (His) own reality
स्व-मायया गोप-आत्मजत्वम्
by (His) own Maayaa, a cowherd boys disguise
चरितै:-विडम्बयन्
activities, deluding,
रेमे रमा-लालित-पाद-पल्लव:
sported, by Ramaa caressed feet tender leaves
ग्राम्यै: समम्
the rustics with
ग्राम्य-वत्-ईश-चेष्टित:
rustic like The Almighty Lord behaved
Thus, The Almighty Lord, Whose tender leaves like feet are caressed by Ramaa, covered His own reality by His own Maayaa, and by activities like those of the cowherd boys deluded all, sporting with the rustics, He behaved like a rustic.
श्रीदामा नाम गोपालो रामकेशवयो: सखा ।
सुबलस्तोककृष्णाद्या गोपा: प्रेम्णेदमब्रुवन् ॥२०॥

Shridaamaa named cowherd,
राम-केशवयो: सखा
of Balaraama and Keshava the friend
सुबल-स्तोक-कृष्ण-आद्या: गोपा:
Subala, Stoka-Krishna, and other cowherds
प्रेम्णा-इदम्-अब्रुवन्
lovingly this said,
A friend of Balaraama and Krishna, Shridaamaa by name, he and Subala, Stoka-Krishna and the other cowherds, lovingly said this,…
राम राम महाबाहो कृष्ण दुष्टनिबर्हण ।
इतोऽविदूरे सुमहद् वनं तालालिसङ्कुलम् ॥२१॥
राम राम महा-बाहो
O Balaraama, Mighty armed!
कृष्ण दुष्ट-निबर्हण
O Krishna, the wicked Destroyer!
इत:-अविदूरे सुमहद् वनम्
from here not very far, a great forest
ताल-अलि-सङ्कुलम्
palm rows thick with
O Balaraama, Mighty armed! O Krishna, destroyer of the wicked! not very far from here is a great forest thick with rows of palm trees.
फलानि तत्र भूरीणि पतन्ति पतितानि च ।
सन्ति किंत्ववरुद्धानि धेनुकेन दुरात्मना ॥२२॥
फलानि तत्र भूरीणि
fruits, there, many
पतन्ति पतितानि च
fall, fallen and
सन्ति किंतु-अवरुद्धानि
are there, but, guarded by
धेनुकेन दुरात्मना
Dhenukaasura the wicked
Many fruits fall there, and there are many fallen fruits also, but the place is guarded by the wicked Dhenukaasura.
सोऽतिवीर्योऽसुरो राम हे कृष्ण खररूपधृक् ।
आत्मतुल्यबलैरन्यैर्ज्ञातिभिर्बहुभिर्वृत: ॥२३॥
स:-अतिवीर्य:-असुर: राम
he is a very powerful demon, O Raama!
हे कृष्ण खर-रूप-धृक्
O Krishna! donkey's form assuming
आत्म-तुल्य बलै:-अन्यै:-
himself like, in power by other
ज्ञातिभि:-बहुभि:-वृत:
of his race, many surrounded
O Raama! O Krishna! he is a very powerful demon assuming the form of a donkey. He is surrounded by many others of his kind, powerful like him.
तस्मात् कृतनराहाराद् भीतैर्नृभिरमित्रहन् ।
न सेव्यते पशुगणै: पक्षिसङ्घैर्विवर्जितम् ॥२४॥
तस्मात् कृत-नर-आहारात्
therefore, having humans eaten
भीतै:-नृभि:-अमित्रहन्
by the afraid men, O foe Slayer!
न सेव्यते पशुगणै:
is not resort to by cattle,
पक्षि-सङ्घै:-विवर्जितम्
by birds' flocks is abandoned
O Slayer of foes! The demon having eaten human beings, the men are afraid of going there. It is not resorted to by the cattle, and is abandoned by the flocks of birds.
विद्यन्तेऽभुक्तपूर्वाणि फलानि सुरभीणि च ।
एष वै सुरभिर्गन्धो विषूचीनोऽवगृह्यते ॥२५॥
विद्यन्ते-अभुक्त-पूर्वाणि
are present, uneaten before
फलानि सुरभीणि च
fruits mellow smelling and
एष: वै सुरभि:-गन्ध:
this, certainly, pleasant fragrance
विषूचीन:-अवगृह्यते
on all sides is spreading
There are fruits which are not eaten by us before. Certainly the mellow sweet smell of the fruits and the pleasant fragrance of the flowers, is spreading everywhere.
प्रयच्छ तानि न: कृष्ण गन्धलोभितचेतसाम् ।
वाञ्छास्ति महती राम गम्यतां यदि रोचते ॥२६॥
प्रयच्छ तानि न: कृष्ण
give those, to us O Krishna!
गन्ध-लोभित-चेतसाम्
by the smell lured minded
वाञ्छा-अस्ति महती
desire is great
राम गम्यताम् यदि रोचते
O Raama! do go if it pleases You
O Krishna, do give those fruits to us, whose minds are lured by the smell. O Raama! Our desire is great, do go if it pleases You.
एवं सुहृद्वच: श्रुत्वा सुहृत्प्रियचिकीर्षया ।
प्रहस्य जग्मतुर्गोपैर्वृतौ तालवनं प्रभू ॥२७॥
एवम् सुहृत्-वच: श्रुत्वा
thus, the friends request hearing
सुहृत्-प्रिय-चिकीर्षया
for the friends desired to accomplish
प्रहस्य जग्मतु:-गोपै:-वृतौ
laughing, went (they both), cowherds accompanied
ताल-वनम् प्रभू
to the palm forest, The Lords
Thus, hearing the request of the friends, and wanting to accomplish their desire, both of Them laughed, and accompanied by the cowherds, went to the palm forest.
बल: प्रविश्य बाहुभ्यां तालान् सम्परिकम्पयन् ।
फलानि पातयामास मतङ्गज इवौजसा ॥२८॥
बल: प्रविश्य बाहुभ्याम्
Balaraama, entered, with the arms
तालान् सम्परिकम्पयन्
the palm trees well shaking
फलानि पातयामास
the fruits felled
मतङ्गज इव-ओजसा
with elephant young like strength
Balaraama, entered the forest and shook the palm trees with the arms with the strength like that of a young elephant, and caused the fruits to fall.
फलानां पततां शब्दं निशम्यासुररासभ: ।
अभ्यधावत् क्षितितलं सनगं परिकम्पयन् ॥२९॥
फलानाम् पतताम् शब्दम्
the fruits falling sound
निशम्य-असुर-रासभ:
hearing, the demon donkey
अभ्यधावत् क्षिति-तलम्
rushed on the earth's surface
स-नगम् परिकम्पयन्
with the mountains trembling
The demon donkey, hearing the sound of the falling fruits, rushed, trembling the surface of the earth along with the mountains.
समेत्य तरसा प्रत्यग् द्वाभ्यां बलं बली ।
निहत्योरसि काशब्दं मुञ्चन् पर्यसरत् खल: ॥३०॥
समेत्य तरसा प्रत्यग्
approaching hastily, in front,
द्वाभ्याम् बलम् बली
by two (hind legs), Balaraama, the powerful
निहत्य-उरसि का-शब्दम्
hit on the chest, harsh bray
मुञ्चन् पर्यसरत् खल:
giving forth, dispersed the wicked
Approaching hastily, the powerful demon hit Balaraama on the chest with his two hind legs, the wicked one dispersed giving out a harsh bray.
पुनरासाद्य संरब्ध उपक्रोष्टा पराक् स्थित: ।
चरणावपरौ राजन् बलाय प्राक्षिपद् रुषा ॥३१॥
पुन:-आसाद्य संरब्ध:
again approaching in anger
उपक्रोष्टा पराक् स्थित:
the donkey, at the back standing
चरणौ-अपरौ राजन्
legs the hind, O King!
बलाय प्राक्षिपत् रुषा
On Balaraama kicked in rage
O King! The donkey again approaching in anger stood with his back behind Balaraama, and kicked him with his two hind legs in great rage.
स तं गृहीत्वा प्रपदोर्भ्रामयित्वैकपाणिना ।
चिक्षेप तृणराजाग्रे भ्रामणत्यक्तजीवितम् ॥३२॥
स: तम् गृहीत्वा प्रपदो:-
he (Balaraama) him taking hold of by both legs,
भ्रामयित्वा-एक-पाणिना
whirling with one hand
चिक्षेप तृणराज-अग्रे
threw in the palm tree's front
भ्रामण-त्यक्त-जीवितम्
when whirling gave up life
Balaraama took hold of him by his two legs and whirling him flung him in front of the palm tree. The donkey gave up his life as he was being whirled.
तेनाहतो महातालो वेपमानो बृहच्छिरा: ।
पार्श्वस्थं कम्पयन् भग्न: स चान्यं सोऽपि चापरम् ॥३३॥
तेन-आहत: महा-ताल:
by that hit, the great palm
वेपमान: बृहत्-शिरा:
trembling with the extensive top
पार्श्व-स्थम् कम्पयन्
near by standing shaking
भग्न: स: च-अन्यम्
crushed that, and the other
स:-अपि च-अपरम्
that also, and the next
Hit by that body of the donkey the great palm tree with its extensive top, trembled and broke, breaking with it the tree standing near by, that breaking the other and then the next.
बलस्य लीलयोत्सृष्टखरदेहहताहता: ।
तालाश्चकम्पिरे सर्वे महावातेरिता इव ॥३४॥
बलस्य लीलया-उत्सृष्ट-
by Balaraama sport dashed
खर-देह-हत-आहता:
donkey's carcase hit and struck
ताला:-चकम्पिरे सर्वे
the palms trembled all
महा-वात-ईरिता: इव
by great hurricane swept as if
The donkey's carcase flung by Balaraama as if in sporting, struck the other palms, which trembled as if swept by a great hurricane.
नैतच्चित्रं भगवति ह्यनन्ते जगदीश्वरे ।
ओतप्रोतमिदं यस्मिंस्तन्तुष्वङ्ग यथा पट: ॥३५॥
न-एतत्-चित्रम् भगवति
not this is strange for The Almighty
हि-अनन्ते जगत्-ईश्वरे
indeed Ananta (Balaraama), of the universe the Ruler
ओत-प्रोतम्-इदम् यस्मिन्-
woven this into Whom,
तन्तुषु-अङ्ग यथा पट:
in threads, O Dear! like cloth
O Dear! This is not strange for the Almighty, indeed, Ananta, (Balaraama). In the Ruler of the universe, all this universe is woven, like the warp and woof of threads in the cloth.
तत: कृष्णं च रामं च ज्ञातयो धेनुकस्य ये ।
क्रोष्टारोऽभ्यद्रवन् सर्वे संरब्धा हतबान्धवा: ॥३६॥
तत: कृष्णम् च रामम् च
then, to Krishna and Balaraama
ज्ञात:-धेनुकस्य ये
the relatives of Dhenuka, which
क्रोष्टार:-अभ्यद्रवन् सर्वे
enangered, rushed all
संरब्धा: हत-बान्धवा:
in rage, for killed the brother
Then, all the enangered relatives of the demon Dhenuka, rushed towards Krishna and Balaraama, in rage for their brother being killed.
तांस्तानापतत: कृष्णो रामश्च नृप लीलया ।
गृहीतपश्चाच्चरणान् प्राहिणोत्तृणराजसु ॥३७॥
तान्-तान्-आपतत: कृष्ण:
all of them having come
राम:-च नृप लीलया
and Raama, O King! Sportingly
गृहीत-पश्चात्-चरणान्
seizing the hind heels
प्राहिणोत्-तृणराजसु
struck at the palm trees
O King! Krishna and Balaraama, seized those who had come near, by their hind heels and struck them to the palm trees.
फलप्रकरसङ्कीर्णं दैत्यदेहैर्गतासुभि: ।
रराज भू: सतालाग्रैर्घनैरिव नभस्तलम् ॥३८॥
फल-प्रकर-सङ्कीर्णम्
with fruit heaps scattered
दैत्य-देहै:-गत-आसुभि:
demon bodies devoid of life
रराज भू: स-ताल-अग्रै:-
shone the earth with palm tree tops
घनै:-इव नभ:-तलम्
with clouds like sky expanse
With the heaps of fruits, and the lifeless bodies of the demons, and the tops of the palm trees, scattered, the earth shone like the expanse of the sky overcast with clouds.
तयोस्तत् सुमहत् कर्म निशाम्य विबुधादय: ।
मुमुचु: पुष्पवर्षानि चक्रुर्वाद्यानि तुष्टुवु: ॥३९॥
तयो:-तत् सुमहत् कर्म
their that great deed
निशम्य विबुध-आदय:
hearing of, gods and others
मुमुचु: पुष्प-वर्षानि
showered flower rains
चक्रु:-वाद्यानि तुष्टुवु:
played instruments, and sang praises
The gods and other celestial beings, hearing of this great deed of theirs, showered rains of flowers, played musical instruments, and sang praises.
अथ तालफलान्यादन् मनुष्या: गतसाध्वसा: ।
तृणं च पशवश्चेरुर्हतधेनुककानने ॥४०॥
अथ ताल-फलानि-आदन्
after that, the fruits eating,
मनुष्या: गत-साध्वसा:
the men, devoid of fear
तृणम् च पशव:-चेरु:-
grass and the animals grazed
हत-धेनुक-कानने
killed Dhenuka in the forest
After that, the demon Dhenuka being killed in the forest, the men without fear ate the palm fruits, and the animals grazed the grass.
कृष्ण: कमलपत्राक्ष: पुण्यश्रवणकीर्तन: ।
स्तूयमानोऽनुगैर्गोपै: साग्रजो व्रजमाव्रजत् ॥४१॥
कृष्ण: कमल-पत्र-अक्ष:
Krishna, lotus petal eyed,
पुण्य-श्रवण-कीर्तन:
of holy merit the listening of Whose glory
स्तूयमान:-अनुगै:-गोपै:
glorified by followers, the cowherds,
स-अग्रज: व्रजम्-आव्रजत्
with the elder brother, to Vraja came
The lotus petal eyed Krishna, listening to Whose glory is of holy merit, was glorified by His followers and cowherds, came back to Vraja with His elder brother.
तं गोरजश्छुरितकुन्तलबद्धबर्हवन्यप्रसूनरुचिरेक्षणचारुहासम् ।
वेणुं क्वणन्तमनुगैरनुगीतकीर्तिं गोप्यो दिदृक्षितदृशोऽभ्यगमन् समेता: ॥४२॥
तम् गोरज:-छुरित-कुन्तल-
Him by cow's hoof, sprinkled dust
बद्ध-बर्ह-वन्य-प्रसून-
tied peacock feather, sylvan flowers
रुचिर-ईक्षण-चारु-हासम्
enchanting glance, beautiful smile
वेणुम् क्वणन्तम्-अनुगै:-
flute playing, by followers
अनुगीत-कीर्तिम् गोप्य:
sung glory, the Gopis',
दिदृक्षित-दृश:-अभ्यगमन् समेता:
eager to see His sight, eyes, came out all together
All the Gopis came out of Vraja, together, whose eyes were eager to His sight, Whose hair were sprinkled with the dust of the cows' hoofs, the hair were tied with peacock feather, and sylvan flowers, Who had an enchanting glance and a beautiful smile, and was playing the flute, and Whose glory was sung by His followers.
पीत्वा मुकुन्दमुखसारघमक्षिभृङ्गैस्तापं जहुर्विरहजं व्रजयोषितोऽह्नि ।
तत्सत्कृतिं समधिगम्य विवेश गोष्ठं सव्रीडहासविनयं यदपाङ्गमोक्षम् ॥४३॥
पीत्वा मुकुन्द-मुख-सारघम्-
drinking, Mukunda's face honey
अक्षि-भृङ्गै:-तापम् जहु:-
by eyes' bees the heat gave up,
विरहजम् व्रज-योषित:-अह्नि
separation oriented, of Vraja's women, of the day
तत्-सत्कृतिम् समधिगम्य
that hospitality accepting
विवेश गोष्ठम् सव्रीड-हास-
entered the shed, with coyness smile and
विनयम् यत्-अपाङ्ग-मोक्षम्
humbleness, that side ways glancing
The women of Vraja gave up their heat generated by separation of the day, by drinking with their bee like eyes the honey of the lotus like face of Mukunda, Krishna. He accepted their that hospitality, accompanied by their coy smile, humbleness and side long glances, as He entered the shed.
तयोर्यशोदारोहिण्यौ पुत्रयो: पुत्रवत्सले ।
यथाकामं यथाकालं व्यधत्तां परमाशिष: ॥४४॥
तयो:-यशोदा-रोहिण्यौ
of them, Yashodaa and Rohinee,
पुत्रयो: पुत्र-वत्सले
to their sons, of the sons fond of
यथा-कामम् यथा-कालम्
as desired, according to time
व्यधत्ताम् परम-आशिष:
gave excellent things
Yashodaa and Rohinee, who were fond of their sons, gave to them excellent things, as desired by them and according to the occasion.
गताध्वानश्रमौ तत्र मज्जनोन्मर्दनादिभि: ।
नीवीं वसित्वा रुचिरां दिव्यस्रग्गन्धमण्डितौ ॥४५॥
गत-अध्वान-श्रमौ तत्र
rested of the path's fatigue, there,
मज्जन-उन्मर्दन-आदिभि:
by bathing, massage and others,
नीवीम् वसित्वा रुचिराम्
lion cloth wearing charming,
दिव्य स्रक्-गन्ध-मण्डितौ
divine garland's smell adorned with
There, They were rested of the fatigue of the path, having bathed and massaged. They wore charming lion cloth, and were adorned with divine smelling garlands.
जनन्युपहृतं प्राश्य स्वाद्वन्नमुपलालितौ ।
संविश्य वरशय्यायां सुखं सुषुपतुर्व्रजे ॥४६॥
जननि-उपहृतम् प्राश्य
by the mothers brought, having eaten
स्वादु-अन्नम्-उपलालितौ
the delicious food, fondled,
संविश्य वर-शय्यायाम्
lay down on excellent beds
सुखम् सुषुपतु:-व्रजे
in comfort slept in Vraja
They ate the delicious food brought by their mothers, were fondled by them, lay down on excellent beds and went to sleep, in Vraja.
एवं स भगवान् कृष्णो वृन्दावनचर: क्वचित् ।
ययौ राममृते राजन् कालिन्दीं सखिभिर्वृत: ॥४७॥
एवम् स: भगवान् कृष्ण:
in this manner, He The Lord Krishna,
वृन्दावन-चर: क्वचित्
in Vrindaavana living, once went,
ययौ रामम्-ऋते राजन्
without Balaraama, O King!
कालिन्दीम् सखिभि:-वृत:
to Yamunaa with friends surrounded
In this manner, He, The Lord Krishna, living in Vrindaavana, one day went without Balaraama, to the river Yamuna, surrounded by His friends.
अथ गावश्च गोपाश्च निदाघातपपीडिता: ।
दुष्टं जलं पपुस्तस्यास्तृषार्ता विषदूषितम् ॥४८॥
अथ गाव:-च गोपा:-च
then, the cows and the cowherds,
निदाघ-आतप-पीडिता:
by the summer heat tormented
दुष्टम् जलम् पपु:-तस्या:-
the bad water drank of that (river)
तृष-आर्ता: विषदूषितम्
by thirst oppressed, contaminated
Then, the cows and the cowherds, tormented by the summer heat, and oppressed by thirst, drank the bad water of the river, which was contaminated.
विषाम्भस्तदुपस्पृश्य दैवोपहतचेतस: ।
निपेतुर्व्यसव: सर्वे सलिलान्ते कुरूद्वह ॥४९॥
विष-अम्भ:-तत्-उपस्पृश्य
poisonous water that having sipped
दैव-उपहत-चेतस:
by bad luck lost consciousness
निपेतु-व्यसव: सर्वे
fell life-less all
सलिल-अन्ते कुरूद्वह
on the water's side, O Scion of the Kurus!
O Scion of the Kurus! They, all of them having sipped the poisonous water, unfortunately, lost their consciousness, and fell life-less on the side of the water.
वीक्ष्य तान् वै तथा भूतान् कृष्णो योगेश्वरेश्वर: ।
ईक्षयामृतवर्षिण्या स्वनाथान् समजीवयत् ॥५०॥
वीक्ष्य तान् वै तथा-भूतान्
observing them indeed, in that condition
कृष्ण: योगेश्वर-ईश्वर:
Krishna, of the yoga masters, The Master,
ईक्षया-अमृत-वर्षिण्या
by sight nectar showering
स्व-नाथान् समजीवयत्
Himself their Protector, revived
Lord Krishna, The Master of the masters of yoga, observing them in that condition, Himself their Protector, cast His glance showering nectar on them, and indeed restored them to life.
ते सम्प्रतीतस्मृतय: समुत्थाय जलान्तिकात् ।
आसन् सुविस्मिता: सर्वे वीक्षमाणा: परस्परम् ॥५१॥
ते सम्प्रतीत स्मृतय:
they having regained their senses,
समुत्थाय जल-अन्तिकात्
getting up from water near,
आसन् सुविस्मिता: सर्वे
became surprised all
वीक्षमाणा: परस्परम्
looking at each other
They, having regained their senses, got up from near the water, and with great surprise looked at each other.
अन्वमंसत तद् राजन् गोविन्दानुग्रहेक्षितम् ।
पीत्वा विषं परेतस्य पुनरुत्थानमात्मन: ॥५२॥
अन्वमंसत तत् राजन्
they reasoned that, O King!
गोविन्द-अनुग्रह-ईक्षितम्
by Govinda gracious glance
पीत्वा विषम् परेतस्य
having drunk poison and dead
पुन:-उत्थानम्-आत्मन:
again risen themselves
O King! They reasoned that, though they were dead by drinking poison, it was by Govinda gracious glance that they had risen back to life.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे धेनुकवधो नाम पञ्चदश: अध्याय: ॥१५॥
Thus ends the fifteenth discourse entitled 'The demon Dhenuka slain,' in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
