राजा-उवाच -
The King said -
ब्रह्मन् वेदितुमिच्छाम: स्वसारं रामकृष्णयो: ।

यथोपयेमे विजयो या ममासीत् पितामही ॥१॥


ब्रह्मन् वेदितुम्-इच्छाम:
O lord! To know I want
स्वसारम् राम-कृष्णयो:
the sister of Balaraama and Krishna
यथा-उपयेमे विजय:
how married Arjuna
या मम-आसीत् पितामही
who mine was grand mother

O lord! I want to know how Arjuna married the sister of Balaraama and Krishna, who was my grand mother.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
अर्जुनस्तीर्थयात्रायां पर्यटन्नवनीं प्रभु: ।

गत: प्रभासमशृणोन्मातुलेयीं स आत्मन: ॥२॥


अर्जुन:-तीर्थ-यात्रायाम्
Arjuna, on pilgrimage,
पर्यटन्-अवनीम् प्रभु:
going about the land, the mighty,
गत: प्रभासम्-अशृणोत्-
went to Prabhaasa, heard of
मातुलेयीम् स: आत्मन:
maternal uncles' daughter, he his own

The mighty Arjuna, on his pilgrimage, was going about the land, and he went to Prabhaasa, where he heard of his own maternal uncle's daughter.


दुर्योधनाय रामस्तां दास्यतीति न चापरे ।

तल्लिप्सु: स यतिर्भूत्वा त्रिदण्डी द्वारकामगात् ॥३॥


दुर्योधनाय राम:-ताम् दास्यति-
to Duryodhana, Balaraama her will give,
इति न च-अपरे
thus, not to anyone else,
तत्-लिप्सु: स: यति:-भूत्वा
her to win, he, recluse disguised
त्रिदण्डी द्वारकाम्-अगात्
with three staffs, to Dwaarakaa went

He heard that Balaraama will give her to Duryodhana and to no one else. Eager to win her, he disguised as a recluse, bearing triple staffs, went to Dwaarakaa.


तत्र वै वार्षिकान् मासानवात्सीत् स्वार्थसाधक: ।

पौरै: सभाजितोऽभीक्ष्णं रामेणाजानता च स: ॥४॥


तत्र वै वार्षिकान् मासान्-
there, indeed, for monsoon months
अवात्सीत् स्वार्थ-साधक:
lived, own interest to fulfil
पौरै: सभाजित:-अभीक्ष्णम्
by the citizens honoured very well
रामेण-अजानता च स:
by Balaraama, not knowing and he

With the purpose of fulfilling his own interest, he lived there for the four months of monsoon. He was well honoured by the citizens and by Balaraama who did not know his identity.


एकदा गृहमानीय आतिथ्येन निमन्त्र्य तम् ।

श्रद्धयोपहृतं भैक्ष्यं बलेन बुभुजे किल ॥५॥


एकदा गृहम्-आनीय
one day to the brought
आतिथ्येन निमन्त्र्य तम्
as a guest inviting him,
श्रद्धया-उपहृतम् भैक्ष्यम्
with reverence offered food,
बलेन बुभुजे किल
by Balaraama, ate indeed

One day, he was invited as a guest and taken to the palace by Balaraama. There he ate the food offered by Balaraama with reverence.


सोऽपश्यत्तत्र महतीं कन्यां वीरमनोहराम् ।

प्रीत्युत्फुल्लेक्षणस्तस्यां भावक्षुब्धं मनो दधे ॥६॥


स:-अपश्यत्-तत्र महतीम् कन्याम्
he saw there, very beautiful maiden,
वीर-मनोहराम्
of the warriors hearts captivating,
प्रीति-उत्फुल्ल-ईक्षण:-
with joy blooming eyes,
तस्याम् भाव-क्षुब्धम् मन: दधे
in her emotionally agitated mind fixed

There he saw a very beautiful maiden, who captivated the hearts of warriors. His eyes bloomed with joy at her sight, and his emotionally agitated mind was set on her.


सापि तं चकमे वीक्ष्य नारीणां हृदयङ्गमम् ।

हसन्ती व्रीडितापाङ्गी तन्न्यस्तहृदयेक्षणा ॥७॥


सा-अपि तम् चकमे वीक्ष्य
she also, him desired, seeing
नारीणाम् हृदयम्-गमम्
of the women heart entering
हसन्ती व्रीडिता-आपाङ्गी
laughing, shyly side glancing,
तत्-न्यस्त-हृदय-ईक्षणा
in him fixed heart, watching

Him, who enters the hearts of women, on seeing, she too desired him to be her husband. She laughingly and shyly looked at him with side long glances and fixed him in her heart.


तां परं समनुध्यायन्नन्तरं प्रेप्सुरर्जुन: ।

न लेभे शं भ्रमच्चित्त: कामेनातिबलीयसा ॥८॥


ताम् परम् समनुध्यायन्-
her only thinking of,
अन्तरम् प्रेप्सु:-अर्जुन:
opportunity seeking Arjuna,
न लेभे शम् भ्रमत्-चित्त:
did not get peace, confused minded,
कामेन-अति-बलीयसा
by passion very powerful

Arjuna was only thinking for her and was seeking an opportunity. He lost all peace, was confused in mind, overcome by powerful passion.


महत्यां देवयात्रायां रथस्थां दुर्गनिर्गताम् ।

जहारानुमत: पित्रो: कृष्णस्य च महारथ: ॥९॥


महत्याम् देव-यात्रायाम्
for a great temple visit
रथ-स्थाम् दुर्ग-निर्गताम्
in chariot seated, from palace having come out,
जहार-अनुमत: पित्रो:
took her away, consented by the parents,
कृष्णस्य च महारथ:
Krishna and, the great charioteer

She had come out of the palace and was seated in a chariot to visit a great temple. Then, with the consent of the parents, and of Krishna, the great charioteer took her away.


रथस्थो धनुरादाय शूरांश्चारुन्धतो भटान् ।

विद्राव्य क्रोशतां स्वानां स्वभागं मृगराडिव ॥१०॥


रथ-स्थ: धनु:-आदाय
in the chariot seated, bow taking up
शूरान्-च-अरुन्धत: भटान्
the gallant and intercepting attendents,
विद्राव्य क्रोशताम् स्वानाम्
stealing away, as cried her own people,
स्व-भागम् मृग-राट्-इव
own share, the animal king, lion like

He sat in her chariot and took up the bow, and dispersed the gallant attendents who intercepted them. He stole her away from among her own people crying, just as the animal king, lion, takes away his share.


तच्छ्रुत्वा क्षुभितो राम: पर्वणीव महार्णव: ।

गृहीतपाद: कृष्णेन सुहृद्भिश्चान्वशाम्यत ॥११॥


तत्-श्रुत्वा क्षुभित: राम:
that hearing, agitated Balaraama,
पर्वणि-इव महा-अर्णव:
on full moon, like the great ocean
गृहीत-पाद: कृष्णेन
held feet by Krishna,
सुहृद्भि:-च-अन्वशाम्यत
by friends and was pacified

Hearing that, Balaraama was agitated like the great ocean is agitated on a full moon, night. He was pacified by the friends and by Krishna's holding his feet.


प्राहिणोत् पारिबर्हाणि वरवध्वोर्मुदा बल: ।

महाधनोपस्करेभरथाश्वनरयोषित: ॥१२॥


प्राहिणोत् पारिबर्हाणि
sent dowry articles
वर-वध्वो:-मुदा बल:
for the groom and bride, delightfully Balaraama
महा-धन-उपस्कर-
good wealth, household articles,
इभ-रथ-अश्व-नर-योषित:
elephants, chariots, horses, men and women (servants)

Then, with delight Balaraama sent many valuable dowry articles for the groom and the bride, namely, good amount of wealth, household articles, elephants, chariots, horses, men and women servants.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
कृष्णस्यासीद् द्विजश्रेष्ठ: श्रुतदेव इति श्रुत: ।

कृष्णैकभक्त्या पूर्णार्थ: शान्त: कविरलम्पट: ॥१३॥


कृष्णस्य-आसीत् द्विज-श्रेष्ठ:
Krishna's was a Braahmana of high order,
श्रुतदेव इति श्रुत:
Shrutadeva, thus well known
कृष्ण-एक-भक्त्या पूर्ण-अर्थ:
by Krishna's singular devotion, of fulfilled desires,
शान्त: कवि:-अलम्पट:
peaceful, wise, and unattached

A Braahmana of high order was Krishna's devotee, well known as Shrutadeva. By his singular devotion to Krishna, all his desires were fulfilled, he was peaceful, wise and unattached.


स उवास विदेहेषु मिथिलायां गृहाश्रमी ।

अनीहयाऽऽगताहार्यनिर्वर्तितनिजक्रिय: ॥१४॥


स: उवास विदेहेषु
he lived in the Videha kingdom
मिथिलायाम् गृह-आश्रमी
in Mithilaa, as a householder
अनीहया-आगत-आहार्य-
by not begging, obtained materials,
निर्वर्तित-निज-क्रिय:
performed his own duties

He lived in the city of Mithila, in the kingdom of Videha. By the articles he obtained, he fulfilled his needs and duties.


यात्रामात्रं त्वहरहर्दैवादुपनमत्युत ।

नाधिकं तावता तुष्ट: क्रियाश्चक्रे यथोचिता: ॥१५॥


यात्रा-मात्रम् तु-अह:-अह:-
for every day living ,indeed, day to day,
दैवात्-उपनमति-उत
by Providence got, surely,
न-अधिकम् तावता तुष्ट:
not much, in that only satisfied,
क्रिया:-चक्रे यथा-उचिता:
discharged duties, as required

Indeed, by Providence, every day, he got materials for his day to day living, which was not much, but he was satisfied and with that much, he discharged his duties as required.


तथा तद्राष्ट्रपालोङ्ग बहुलाश्व इति श्रुत: ।

मैथिलो निरहम्मान उभावप्यच्युतप्रियौ ॥१६॥


तथा तत्-राष्ट्रपाल: अङ्ग
and of that (kingdom), the king, O Dear Pareekshit!
बहुलाश्व इति श्रुत:
Bahulaashva, thus well known,
मैथिल: निरहम्मान:
of Mithilaa, without ego,
उभौ-अपि-अच्युत-प्रियौ
both also of The Infinite (Krishna) dear

O Dear Pareekshit! And the king of Mithila known as Bahulaashva, was also Krishna's devotee, who had no ego. He and Shrutadeva both were very dear to The Immortal Lord, Krishna.


तयो: प्रसन्नो भगवान् दारुकेणाहृतं रथम् ।

आरुह्य साकं मुनिभिर्विदेहान् प्रययौ प्रभु: ॥१७॥


तयो: प्रसन्न: भगवान्
with them pleased The Lord
दारुकेण-आहृतम् रथम्
by Daaruka brought chariot
आरुह्य साकम् मुनिभि:-
mounting, with sages,
विदेहान् प्रययौ प्रभु:
to Videha went The Almighty

The Almighty Lord pleased by them, mounted the chariot brought by Daaruka, and along with sages, went to the kingdom of Videha.


नारदो वामदेवोऽत्रि: कृष्णो रामोऽसितोऽरुणि: ।

अहं बृहस्पति: कण्वो मैत्रेयश्च्यवनादय: ॥१८॥


नारद: वामदेव:-अत्रि:
Naarada, Vaamadeva, Atri,
कृष्ण: राम:-असित:-अरुणि:
Krishna, Parashuraama, Asita, Aruni,
अहम् बृहस्पति: कण्व:
myself, Brihaspati, Kanva,
मैत्रेय:-च्यवन-आदय:
Maitreya, Chyavana and others

Naarada, Vaamadeva, Atri, Krishna, Parashuraama, Asita, Aruni, myself, Brihaspati, Kanva, Maitreya, Chyavana and others.


तत्र तत्र तमायान्तं पौरा जानपदा नृप ।

उपतस्थु: सार्घ्यहस्ता ग्रहै: सूर्यमिवोदितम् ॥१९॥


तत्र तत्र तम-आयान्तम्
there, there, Him coming,
पौरा: जानपदा नृप
the citizens and public, O King!
उपतस्थु: स-अर्घ्य-हस्ता:
waited, with gifts in hand
ग्रहै: सूर्यम्-इव-उदितम्
by the planets the Sun like risen

Every where, when ever they saw Him coming, the citizens and the public, waited with gifts in hand, like the rising Sun surrounded by the planets.


आनर्तधन्वकुरुजाङ्गलकङ्कमत्स्यपाञ्चालकुन्तिमधुकेकयकोसलार्णा: ।

अन्ये च तन्मुखसरोजमुदारहासस्निग्धेक्षणं नृप पपुर्दृशिभिर्नृनार्य: ॥२०॥


आनर्त-धन्व-कुरुजाङ्गल-कङ्क-
Aanarta, Dhanva, Kurujaangaala, Kanka,
मत्स्य-पाञ्चाल-कुन्ति-मधु-
Matsya, Paanchaala, Kunti, Madhu,
केकय-कोसल-अर्णा:
Kekaya, Kosala, Arna,
अन्ये च तत्-मुख-सरोजम्-
and others, His face lotus
उदार-हास-स्निग्ध-ईक्षणम्
open laughter, soft looks,
नृप पपु:-दृशिभि:-नृ-नार्य:
O King! drank with eyes the men and women

O King! the men and women of Aanarta, Dhanva, Kurujaangaala, Kanka, Matsya, Paanchaala, Kunti, Madhu, Kekaya, Kosala, Arna, and others, with their eyes drank the beauty of His lotus face, open laughter, and soft looks.


तेभ्य: स्ववीक्षणविनष्टतमिस्रदृग्भ्य: क्षेमं त्रिलोकगुरुरर्थदृशं च यच्छन् ।

शृण्वन् दिगन्तधवलं स्वयशोऽशुभघ्नं गीतं सुरैर्नृभिरगाच्छनकैर्विदेहान् ॥२१॥


तेभ्य: स्व-वीक्षण विनष्ट-तमिस्र
to them, by (His) sight destroyed ignorance,
दृग्भ्य: क्षेमम् त्रिलोक-गुरु:-
by glance blessing, of the three worlds The Preceptor,
अर्थ-दृशम् च यच्छन्
of Truth the insight giving,
शृण्वन् दिगन्त-धवलम् स्व-यश:-
hearing the quarters purifying own fame,
अशुभघ्नम् गीतम् सुरै:-नृभि:-
evil driving away, sung by gods and men,
अगात्-शनकै:-विदेहान्
reached slowly to Videha

He destroyed their ignorance by His sight, and by His glance, The Preceptor of the three worlds gave them insight into The Truth. Then listening to His glory and fame which drives away all evils and renders the quarters pure, sung by the gods and men, He slowly reached Videha.


तेऽच्युतं प्राप्तमाकर्ण्य पौरा जानपदा नृप ।

अभीयुर्मुदितास्तस्मै गृहीतार्हणपाणय: ॥२२॥


ते-अच्युतम् प्राप्तम्-आकर्ण्य
they, The Immortal Lord, had reached, hearing,
पौरा: जानपदा: नृप
the citizens and villagers, O King!
अभीयु:-मुदिता:-तस्मै
welcomed with delight, for Him
गृहीत-अर्हण-पाणय:
holding gifts in hands

O King! The citizens and villagers were delighted on hearing of The Immortal Lord Krishna's arrival. They welcomed Him with gifts in their hands.


दृष्ट्वा त उत्तमश्लोकं प्रीत्युत्फुल्लाननाशया: ।

कैर्धृताञ्जलिभिर्नेमु: श्रुतपूर्वांस्तथा मुनीन् ॥२३॥


दृष्ट्वा ते उत्तम-श्लोकम्
on seeing , they, The Well-renowned (Krishna)
प्रीति-उत्फुल्ल-आनन-आशया:
with joy blooming faces and hearts,
कै:-धृत-अञ्जलिभि:-नेमु:
on the heads joined palms placed, bowing,
श्रुत-पूर्वा:-तथा मुनीन्
heard before and the sages

On seeing The Well-renowned Krishna, their faces and hearts bloomed with joy. They bowed with their joined palms placed on their heads, to Him and to the sages of whom they had heard before.


स्वानुग्रहाय सम्प्राप्तं मन्वानौ तं जगद्गुरुम् ।

मैथिल: श्रुतदेवश्च पादयो: पेततु: प्रभो: ॥२४॥


स्व-अनुग्रहाय सम्प्राप्तम्
them self to bless had come
मन्वानौ तम् जगत्-गुरुम्
understanding, Him The Preceptor of the world,
मैथिल: श्रुतदेव:-च
the Mithila king, and Shrutadeva
पादयो: पेततु: प्रभो:
on the feet fell of The Lord

Understanding that The Preceptor of the world, Krishna had arrived to bless them, they, the king of Mithila, Bahulaashva and Shrutadeva, fell at The Lord's feet.


न्यमन्त्रयेतां दाशार्हमातिथ्येन सह द्विजै: ।

मैथिल: श्रुतदेवश्च युगपत् संहताञ्जली ॥२५॥


न्यमन्त्रय-एताम् दाशार्हम्-
invited them both, the scion of Dashaarha, (Krishna)
आतिथ्येन सह द्विजै:
with hospitality, with the Braahmanas
मैथिल: श्रुतदेव:-च
the Mithilaa king Shrutadeva and
युगपत् संहताञ्जली
simultaneously, with joined palms

The Mithilaa king, and Shrutadeva simultaneously with joined palms invited The scion of the Dashaarhas', Krishna and the Braahmanas to accept their hospitality.


भगवांस्तदभिप्रेत्य द्वयो: प्रियचिकीर्षया ।

उभयोराविशद् गेहमुभाभ्यां तदलक्षित: ॥२६॥


भगवान्-तत्-अभिप्रेत्य
The Lord, that accepting,
द्वयो: प्रिय-चिकीर्षया
of both the desired, desiring to do
उभयो:-आविशत् गेहम्-
of both entered the house,
उभाभ्याम् तत्-अलक्षित:
to both that not knowing

The Lord accepted the invitation, and desiring to fulfil their wishes, entered the houses of both of them, without they both knowing about it.


श्रोतुमप्यसतां दूरान् जनक: स्वगृहागतान् ।

आनीतेष्वासनाग्र्येषु सुखासीनान् महामना: ॥२७॥


श्रोतुम्-अपि-असताम् दूरात्
to be heard also by the unrighteous, from far
जनक: स्व-गृह-आगतान्
Janaka (Bahulaashva) to own house arrived
आनीतेषु-आसन-अग्र्येषु
on brought seats the best,
सुख-आसीनान् महामना:
comfortably seated the high souled,

Who was not heard of by the unrighteous from far, That Shree Krishna had arrived at his own house, coming to know of that, Bahulaashva, the high minded, got the best seats to be brought and comfortably seated Krishna and the sages.


प्रवृद्धभक्त्या उद्धर्षहृदयास्राविलेक्षण: ।

नत्वा तदङ्घ्रीन् प्रक्षाल्य तदपो लोकपावनी: ॥२८॥


प्रवृद्ध-भक्त्या उद्धर्ष-हृदया-
by the increased devotion, joyful heart,
अस्र-अविल-ईक्षण:
by tears bedimmed eyes,
नत्वा तत्-अङ्घ्रीन् प्रक्षाल्य
bowing, His feet washed,
तत्-अप: लोक-पावनी:
that water the worlds purifying,

His devotion increased and with an overjoyed heart, and eyes bedimmed with tears, he bowed and washed His feet, and that water which purifies the worlds,…


सकुटुम्बो वहन् मूर्ध्ना पूजयाञ्चक्र ईश्वरान् ।

गन्धमाल्याम्बराकल्पधूपदीपार्घ्यगोवृषै: ॥२९॥


स-कुटुम्ब: वहन् मूर्ध्ना
along with the family bearing on head
पूजयान्-चक्रे ईश्वरान्
worship conducted of the lords
गन्ध-माल्य-अम्बर-आकल्प-
sandal paste, garlands, clothes, ornaments,
धूप-दीप-अर्घ्य-गो-वृषै:
scented fumes, lights, water oblations, cows and oxen

He bore that water on the head along with his family. Then he conducted the worship of The Lord and the sages with offerings of sandal paste, garlands, clothes, ornaments, scented fumes, lights, water oblations, cows and oxen.


वाचा मधुरया प्रीणन्निदमाहान्नतर्पितान् ।

पादावङ्कगतौ विष्णो: संस्पृशञ्छनकैर्मुदा ॥३०॥


वाचा मधुरया प्रीणन्-
by words sweet
इदम्-आह-अन्न-तर्पितान्
this said (to them) with food satisfied,
पादौ-अङ्क-गतौ विष्णो:
feet on the lap placed of Vishnu,
संस्पृशन्-शनकै:-मुदा
caressing slowly with delight

They were satisfied by having food. Then with delight, taking Vishnu's (Krishna's) feet on the lap and slowly caressing them, he sweetly said this,….


राजा-उवाच -
The King said -
भवान् हि सर्वभूतानामात्मा साक्षी स्वदृग् विभो ।

अथ नस्त्वत्पदाम्भोजं स्मरतां दर्शनं गत: ॥३१॥


भवान् हि सर्व-भूतानाम्-आत्मा
You alone of all beings are The Soul
साक्षी स्वदृक् विभो
The Witness, Self-effulgent, O Lord!
अथ न:-त्वत्-पाद-अम्भोजम्
now, to us, Your feet lotus
स्मरताम् दर्शनम् गत:
remembering sight have come into

O Lord! You alone are the Soul of all beings, and The witness and You are Self-effulgent. Now to us, who constantly remember Your lotus feet, they are revealed.


स्ववचस्तदृतं कर्तुमस्मद्दृग्गोचरो भवान् ।

यदात्थैकान्तभक्तान् मे नानन्त: श्रीरज: प्रिय: ॥३२॥


स्व-वच:-तत्-ऋतम् कर्तुम्
own words those true to prove
अस्मत्-दृक्-गोचर: भवान्
to our eyes are seen You,
यत्-आत्थ-एकान्त-भक्तान्
that had said, for the singularly devoted
मे न-अनन्त: श्री:-अज: प्रिय:
to Me not Balaraama, Shree, Brahmaa are dear

You had said, that, Balaraama, Shree, Brahmaa are not as dear to Me, as a singularly devoted devotee. To prove those words to be true, You have revealed Yourself to our eyes.


को नु त्वच्चरणाभोजमेवंविद् विसृजेत् पुमान् ।

निष्किञ्चनानां शान्तानां मुनीनां यस्त्वमात्मद: ॥३३॥


क: नु त्वत्-चरण-अभोजम्-
who, indeed, Your feet lotus,
एवम्-वित् विसृजेत् पुमान्
such like, abandon, man
निष्कञ्चनानाम् शान्तानाम्
of the non-collective, tranquil
मुनीनाम् य:-त्वम्-आत्म-द:
sages, Who You are Self giving

Which man will abandon Your lotus feet, knowing that, they are through which You give Your Self to the tranquil sages who do not have anything as their own, not even their body.


योऽवतीर्य यदोर्वंशे नृणां संसरतामिह ।

यशो वितेने तच्छान्त्यै त्रैलोक्यवृजिनापहम् ॥३४॥


य:-अवतीर्य यदो:-वंशे
Who descending in the Yadus' clan
नृणाम् संसरताम्-इह
for the people transmigration going through here
यश: वितेने तत्-शान्त्यै
(Own) fame spread, for it to subdue
त्रैलोक्य-वृजिन-अपहम्
of the three worlds' sins wiping out

You, Who have descended in the clan of the Yadus, and spread Your pure fame which releases the people, here, from the cycle of transmigration, and which rids the three worlds of sins.


नमस्तुभ्यं भगवते कृष्णायाकुण्ठमेधसे ।

नारायणाय ऋषये सुशान्तं तप ईयुषे ॥३५॥


नम:-तुभ्यम् भगवते
salutations to You, The Lord,
कृष्णाय-अकुण्ठ-मेधसे
Krishna, of infallible wisdom,
नारायणाय ऋषये
to Naaraayana, the sage,
सुशान्तम् तप ईयुषे
very peaceful, austerities practitioner

Salutations to You, The Almighty Lord Krishna, of infallible wisdom, to the very peaceful sage Naaraayana, practicing austerities.


दिनानि कतिचिद् भूमन् गृहान् नो निवस द्विजै: ।

समेत: पादरजसा पुनीहीदं निमे: कुलम् ॥३६॥


दिनानि कतिचत् भूमन्
for days some, O Infinite Lord!
गृहान् न: निवस द्विजै:
in houses ours stay, Braahmanas
समेत: पाद-रजसा पुनीह-
along with, by feet dust, purify
इदम् निमे: कुलम्
this Nimi's clan

O Infinite Lord! For some days, do stay in our house, along with the Brahmanas and render pure this clan of Nimi.


इत्युपामन्त्रितो राज्ञा भगवाँल्लोकभावन: ।

उवास कुर्वन् कल्याणं मिथिलानरयोषिताम् ॥३७॥


इति-उपामन्त्रित: राज्ञा
thus invited by the king,
भगवान्-लोक-भावन:
The Almighty Lord, of the worlds' creator,
उवास कुर्वन् कल्याणम्
stayed, conferring blessings
मिथिला-नर-योषिताम्
on Mithila's men and women

The Almighty Lord, The Creator of the worlds, thus invited by the king, stayed there, conferring blessings on the men and women of Mithila.


श्रुतदेवोऽच्युतं प्राप्तं स्वगृहाञ्जनको यथा ।

नत्वा मुनीन् सुसंहृष्टो धुन्वन् वासो ननर्त ह ॥३८॥


श्रुतदेव:-अच्युतम् प्राप्तम्
Shrutadeva, on Shri Krishna's arrival,
स्व-गृहान्-जनक: यथा
to his own house, Janaka like,
नत्वा मुनीन् सु-संहृष्ट:
bowing, to the sages, overcome with joy,
धुन्वन् वास: ननर्त-ह
waving clothes, danced indeed

Just like Janaka, the king of Videha, Shrutadeva having Shree Krishna arrived at his house, bowed to Him and the sages, then overcome with joy, he waved his clothes and danced, indeed.


तृणपीठबृसीष्वेतानानीतेषूपवेश्य स: ।

स्वागतेनाभिनन्द्याङ्घ्रीन् सभार्योऽवनिजे मुदा ॥३९॥


तृणपीठ-बृसीषु-एतान्-
straw upraised seats, and mats,
आनीतेषु-उपवेश्य स:
bringing in, seating, he,
स्वागतेन-अभिनन्द्य-
with welcome greeting
अङ्घ्रीन् सभार्य:-अवनिजे मुदा
the feet, with (his) wife washed with delight

He brought in straw topped raised seats and mats, and seated them. Then, welcomed them and greeted them, and along with his wife washed their feet with delight.


तदम्भसा महाभाग आत्मानं सगृहान्वयम् ।

स्नापयाञ्चक्र उद्-हर्षो लब्धसर्वमनोरथ: ॥40॥


तत्-अम्भसा महाभाग
by that water, the highly blessed,
आत्मानम् स-गृह-अन्वयम्
himself and with the house and family,
स्नापयान्-चक्रे उद्-हर्ष:
saturating began, beaming with joy,
लब्ध-सर्व-मनोरथ:
gained all desires

The highly blessed, Shrutadeva, beaming with joy, had all his desires fulfilled, as he saturated himself, the house and the family with that water.


फलार्हणोशीरशिवामृताम्बुभिर्मृदा सुरभ्या तुलसीकुशाम्बुजै: ।

आराधयामास यथोपपन्नया सपर्यया सत्त्वविवर्धनान्धसा ॥४१॥


फल-अर्हण-उशीर-शिव-
with fruits, incenses, Khas (scented grass) pure
अमृत-अम्बुभि: मृदा सुरभ्या
nectar water, mud sweet smelling,
तुलसी-कुश-अम्बुजै:
Tulasi leaves, Kusha, lotuses,
आराधयामास
worshipped
यथा-उपपन्नया सपर्यया
as available, worshipping materials,
सत्त्व-विवर्धन-अन्धसा
Sattva promoting food

Shrutadeva worshipped them with available articles of worship, like, fruits, incenses, nectar like pure water scented with Khas grass, sweet smelling mud, Tulasi leaves, Kusha, lotuses, and food which promotes Sattva.


स तर्कयामास कुतो ममान्वभूद् गृहान्धकूपे पतितस्य सङ्गम: ।

य: सर्वतीर्थास्पदपादरेणुभि: कृष्णेन चास्यात्मनिकेतभूसुरै: ॥४२॥


स: तर्कयामास कुत: मम-
he reasoned, how to me
अन्वभूदत् गृह-अन्ध-कूपे
happened, in household dark well
पतितस्य सङ्गम:
fallen, meeting,
य: सर्व-तीर्थ-आस्पद
that, (with)of all the holy places representing
पाद-रेणुभि: कृष्णेन
feet dust of Krishna,
च-अस्य-आत्म-निकेत-भूसुरै:
and of His own abode, the Braahmanas

He reasoned, that, how could it happen with him, who is fallen in the dark well of household, that there should be a meeting with Krishna, Whose feet dust is as prestigious as the holy places, and with the Braahmanas, who are His own abode?


सूपविष्टान् कृतातिथ्याञ्छ्रुतदेव उपस्थित: ।

सभार्य स्वजनापत्य उवाचाङ्घ्र्यभिमर्शन: ॥४३॥


सु-उपविष्टान् कृत-आतिथ्यान्
he, to the seated, having extended hospitality,
श्रुतदेव उपस्थित:
Shrutadeva, waited,
स-भार्य स्व-जन-अपत्य
with his wife, relatives and children,
उवाच-अङ्घ्रि-अभिमर्शन:
said, feet massaging

He, Shrutadeva, having seated them comfortably, and extended his hospitality, waited upon them with his wife, relatives, and children, and massaging the feet of Shree Krishna, said,…


श्रुतदेव उवाच -
Shrutadeva said -
नाद्य नो दर्शनं प्राप्त: परं परमपूरुष: ।

यर्हीदं शक्तिभि: सृष्ट्वा प्रविष्टो ह्यात्मसत्तमा ॥४४॥


न-अद्य न: दर्शनम् प्राप्त:
not, today, to us sight is attained
परम् परम-पूरुष:
of the beyond, Supreme Person,
यर्हि-इदम् शक्तिभि: सृष्ट्वा
because, this, by potencies, creating,
प्रविष्ट: हि-आत्म-सत्तमा
entered indeed as Self Dominant

It is not that we have attained Your sight only today. Because, You created this world with Your potencies and entered it as The Self Dominant Lord.


यथा शयान: पुरुषो मनसैवात्ममायया ।

सृष्ट्वा लोकं परं स्वाप्नमनुविश्यावभासते ॥४५॥


यथा शयान: पुरुष:
like, a sleeping person,
मनसा-एव-आत्म मायया
mentally only by own delusion,
सृष्ट्वा लोकम् परम्
creating a world different,
स्वाप्नम्-अनुविश्य-अवभासते
in dream, entering, seen is

Just like a sleeping person, by his own mental delusion, in the dream, creates a different world, and enters it himself, himself seen in different forms.


शृण्वतां गद्तां शश्वदर्चतां त्वाभिवन्दताम् ।

नृणां संवदतामन्तर्हृदि भास्यमलात्मनाम् ॥४६॥


शृण्वताम् गद्ताम् शश्वत्-
hearing, speaking, always
अर्चताम् तु-अभिवन्दताम्
worshipping, indeed, bowing,
नृणाम् संवदताम्-अन्त:-हृदि
of people, conversing, inside the hearts,
भासि-अमल-आत्मनाम्
shine, (You) of the pure hearted

You shine in the hearts of those who hear about You, speak about You, always worship You, indeed bow to You, converse with people about You, and so are purified at heart.


हृदिस्थोऽप्यतिदूरस्थ: कर्मविक्षिप्तचेतसाम् ।

आत्मशक्तिभिरग्राह्योऽप्यन्त्युपेतगुणात्मनाम् ॥४७॥


हृदि-स्थ:-अपि-अति-दूर-स्थ:
in the heart present, though, very far away are,
कर्म-विक्षिप्त-चेतसाम्
of (people) by activities distracted minded,
आत्म-शक्तिभि:-अग्राह्य:-अपि-
by mind's faculties, unattainable also,
अन्ति-उपेत-गुण-आत्मनाम्
in proximity are have developed qualities themselves

Though, You are present in the hearts of everyone, You are far away from them whose minds are distracted due to outer activities. You are not attainable by the faculties of the mind, either, You are in proximity with those who have developed excellent qualities by themselves.


नमोऽस्तु तेऽध्यात्मविदां परात्मने अनात्मने स्वात्मविभक्तमृत्यवे ।

सकारणाकारणलिङ्गमीयुषे स्वमाययासंवृतरुद्धदृष्टये ॥४८॥


नम:-अस्तु ते-अध्यात्म-विदाम्
salutation be to You, of The Self-knowers'
परात्मने अनात्मने
Supreme Spirit, without the self,
स-आत्म-विभक्त-मृत्यवे
(even) with the self, detached, Death,
स-कारण-अ-कारण
with the cause, and without cause,
लिङ्गम्-ईयुषे स्व-मायया-
forms assuming, by Own Maayaa
संवृत-रुद्ध-दृष्टये
surrounded, blocking the vision (of others)

My salutation to You, The Supreme Spirit to those who know the self. Though the beings are with the self, they are without the self, and detached from the self, You are Death for them. With cause, or without cause, You assume forms and are surrounded by Your own Maayaa, which blocks Your vision.


स त्वं शाधि स्वभृत्यान् न: किं देव करवामहे ।

एतदन्तो नृणां क्लेशो यद् भवानक्षिगोचर: ॥४९॥


स: त्वम् शाधि स्व-भृत्यान्
That You, instruct, Your own servants
न: किम् देव करवामहे
us, what, O Lord! should do
एतत्-अन्त: नृणाम् क्लेश:
this is the end of peoples' sorrow,
यत् भवान्-अक्षि-गोचर:
that You are by eyes seen

O Lord! Such That You are, instruct us, Your servants, what we should do. The end of the sorrows of people is when You are seen by them, by the eyes.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
तदुक्तमित्युपकर्ण्य भगवान् प्रणतार्तिहा ।

गृहीत्वा पाणिना पाणिं प्रहसंस्तमुवाच ह ॥५०॥


तत्-उक्तम्-इति-उपकर्ण्य
by him said, this hearing,
भगवान् प्रणत-आर्ति-हा
The Almighty Lord, for shelter seeking, agony Dispeller,
गृहीत्वा पाणिना पाणिम्
taking by hand the hand,
प्रहसन्-तम्-उवाच ह
smilingly to him said, indeed

Hearing what Shrutadeva had said, The Almighty Lord, The Dispeller of the agony of the shelter seekers, took his hand in His hand, and smilingly said,……


श्री भगवान्-उवाच -
The Glorious Lord said -
ब्रह्मंस्तेऽनुग्रहार्थाय सम्प्राप्तान् विद्धि अमून् मुनीन् ।

सञ्चरन्ति मया लोकान् पुनन्त: पादरेणुभि: ॥५१॥


ब्रह्मन्-ते-अनुग्रह-अर्थाय
'O lord! To you bless with the purpose,
सम्प्राप्तान् विद्धि अमून् मुनीन्
have come, know, these sages,
सञ्चरन्ति मया लोकान्
roam about with Me, the worlds
पुनन्त: पाद रेणुभि:
purifying by feet dust

"O lord! Understand that these sages have come here with the purpose of blessing you. They roam about with Me, purifying the worlds with their feet dust.'


देवा: क्षेत्राणि तीर्थानि दर्शनस्पर्शनार्चनै: ।

शनै: पुनन्ति कालेन तदप्यर्हत्तमेक्षया ॥५२॥


देवा: क्षेत्राणि तीर्थानि
the gods, holy places, and sacred waters,
दर्शन-स्पर्शन-अर्चनै:
by sight, touch, worship,
शनै: पुनन्ति कालेन
slowly purify, in time,
तत्-अपि-अर्हत्तम-ईक्षया
that too, the high souls, by glance

'The gods, holy places, and sacred waters, slowly purify, by sight, touch, and worship, in time. The exalted souls purify instantly by their sight.'


ब्राह्मणो जन्मना श्रेयान् सर्वेषां प्राणिनामिह ।

तपसा विद्यया तुष्ट्या किमु मत्कलया युत: ॥५३॥


ब्राह्मण: जन्मना श्रेयान्
Braahmanas by birth are superior
सर्वेषाम् प्राणिनाम्-इह
of all beings, here,
तपसा विद्यया तुष्ट्या
with austerities, study, contentment,
किमु मत्-कलया युत:
what of, by My part attached

'Here, Braahmanas are superior to all beings, what of those who practice austerities, are engaged in studies, are contented, and are attached to Me, in devotion.'


न ब्राह्मणान्मे दयितं रूपमेतच्चतुर्भुजम् ।

सर्ववेदमयो विप्र: सर्वदेवमयो ह्यहम् ॥५४॥


न ब्राह्मणात्-मे दयितम्
not, from the Braahmanas, to Me dear is
रूपम्-एतत्-चर्भुजम्
the form this of Chaturbhuja,
सर्व-वेद-मय:-विप्र:
(as) of all the Vedas personification are Braahmanas
सर्व-देवमय: हि-अहम्
and of all gods embodiment indeed am I

This Chaturbhuja form of Mine, is not as dear to Me, as the Braahmanas. The Braahmanas are the personification of the Vedas, and indeed, I am the embodiment of the gods.


दुष्प्रज्ञा: अविदित्वैवमवजानन्त्यसूयव: ।

गुरुं मां विप्रमात्मानमर्चादाविज्यदृष्टय: ॥५५॥


दुष्प्रज्ञा: अविदित्वा-एवम्-
those with bad intellect, not knowing, thus,
अवजानन्ति-असूयव:
insult the jealous,
गुरुम् माम् विप्रम्-आत्मानम्-
the preceptor, Me the Braahmana, the Self,
अर्चादौ-इज्य दृष्टय:
in idols etc, worthy to be worshipped, minded

Those with faulty intellect, not knowing this Truth, are jealous and insult the preceptor and Me and the Self in the Braahmanas, considering the idols to be worthy of worship, worship them.


चराचरमिदं विश्वं भावा ये चास्य हेतव: ।

मद्रूपाणीति चेतस्याधत्ते विप्रो मदीक्षया ॥५६॥


चर-अचरम्-इदम् विश्वम्
mobile, immobile this world,
भावा: ये च-अस्य हेतव:
the constituents, which and the cause,
मत्-रूपाणि-इति चेतसि-
My forms, thus, in the mind
आधत्ते विप्र: मत्-ईक्षया
decides, Braahmana by My sight

By percieving Me in all the mobile and immobile world, its constituents and its cause, the Braahmana decides in his mind, that these are essentially My forms.


तस्माद् ब्रह्मऋषीनेतान् ब्रह्मन् मच्छ्रद्धयार्चय ।

एवं चेदर्चितोऽस्म्यद्धा नान्यथा भूरिभूतिभि: ॥५७॥


तस्मात् ब्रह्म-ऋषीन्-एतान्
therefore, Braahmana sages, these
ब्रह्मन् मत्-श्रद्धया-अर्चय
O Shrutadeva! with My faith, worship
एवम् चेत्-अर्चित:-अस्मि-अद्धा
thus if worshipped, am worshipped,
न-अन्यथा भूरि-भूतिभि:
not otherwise with many articles

O Shrutadeva! Therefore, worship these Braahmana sages having faith like in Me. If they are thus worshipped, I am easily worshipped, not so, by very many worshipping articles.


श्री शुक-उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
स इत्थं प्रभुणाऽऽदिष्ट: सहकृष्णान् द्विजोत्तमान् ।

आराध्यैकात्मभावेन मैथिलश्चाप सद्गतिम् ॥५८॥


स: इत्थम् प्रभुणा-आदिष्ट:
he, in this manner, by The Lord instructed,
सह-कृष्णान् द्विज-उत्तमान्
with Krishna, the Braahmanas prominent
आराध्य-एक-आत्म-भावेन
worshipped with One Self concept,
मैथिल:-च-आप सत्-गतिम्
the Mithila king and attained the exalted state

Shrutadeva, thus instructed by The Lord, worshipped the prominent Braahmanas along with Krishna, with the concept of one soul. He and the king of Mithila attained the exalted state.


एवं स्वभक्तयो: राजन् भगवान् भक्त भक्तिमान् ।

उषित्वाऽऽदिष्य सन्मार्गं पुनर्द्वारवतीमगात् ॥५९॥


एवम् स्व-भक्तयो: राजन्
in this manner, to His own devotees, O King!
भगवान् भक्त भक्तिमान्
The Lord, of the devotees The Devoted,
उषित्वा-आदिष्य सत्-मार्गम्
staying, instructing the virtuous path,
पुन:-द्वारवतीम्-अगात्
again, to Dwaarakaa came

O King! In this manner, staying with His own devotees, The Lord, The Devoted to the devotees, instructed them into the path of righteousness, and returned to Dwaarakaa.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे श्रुतदेवानुग्रहो नाम षडशीतितम: अध्याय: ॥८६॥


Thus ends the eighty-sixth discourse entitled 'Shree Krishna's Grace on Shrutadeva', in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
