उद्धव उवाच -
Uddhava said -
क्रियायोगं समाचक्ष्व भवदाराधनं प्रभो ।
यस्मात्त्वां ये यथार्चन्ति सात्वता: सात्वतर्षभ ॥१॥
क्रिया-योगम् समाचक्ष्व
Kriyaa Yoga do explain
भवत्-आराधनम् प्रभो
of Your worship O Lord!
यस्मात्-त्वाम् ये यथा-अर्चन्ति
by which you those as worship
सात्वता: सात्वतर्षभ
the devoted, O Protector of devotees!
O Lord! Do explain the Kriyaa yoga, by which the devotees worship and propitiate You, O Protector of devotees .
एतद् वदन्ति मुनयो मुहुर्नि:श्रेयसं नृणाम् ।
नारदो भगवान् व्यास आचार्योऽङ्गिरस: सुत: ॥२॥
एतत् वदन्ति मुनय:
this, say the sages
मुहु:-नि:श्रेयसम् नृणाम्
again and again the most beneficial for men
नारद: भगवान् व्यास:
Naarada, divine Vyaasa,
आचार्य:-अङ्गिरस: सुत:
preceptor, Angirasa's son
The divine sages Naarada, divine Vyaasa, and the gods' preceptor, Brihaspati, son of Angirasa, again and again declare this to be most beneficial course for men.
नि:सृतं ते मुखाम्भोजाद् यदाह भगवानज: ।
पुत्रेभ्यो भृगुमुख्येभ्यो देव्यै च भगवान् भव: ॥३॥
नि:सृतम् ते मुख-अम्भोजात्
emanated from Your mouth lotus,
यत्-आह भगवान्-अज:
which said the lord Brahmaa
पुत्रेभ्य: भृगु-मुख्येभ्य:
to the sons, Bhrigu the main,
देव्यै च भगवान् भव:
to the divine lady, and lord Shiva
It first emanated from Your lotus like lips, which was then told by lord Brahmaa to his sons, the foremost being sage Bhrigu, and Lord Shiva imparted to his wife, the divine lady Paarvati.
एतद् वै सर्ववर्णानामाश्रमाणां च सम्मतम् ।
श्रेयसामुत्तमं मन्ये स्त्रीशूद्राणां च मानद ॥४॥
एतत् वै सर्व-वर्णानाम्-
this of course, for all grades
आश्रमाणाम् च सम्मतम्
stages and recommended
श्रेयसाम्-उत्तमम् मन्ये
for the benefit utmost I consider,
स्त्री-शूद्राणाम् च मानद
for women, lower castes and O Giver of honour!
O Giver of honour! It is recommended for the higher grades of human beings and people of all stages, and I consider it to be of utmost benefit for lower castes and women.
एतत् कमलपत्राक्ष कर्मबन्धविमोचनम् ।
भक्ताय चानुरक्ताय ब्रूहि विश्वेश्वरेश्वर ॥५॥
एतत् कमल-पत्र-अक्ष
this, O Lotus petal eyed Lord!
कर्म-बन्ध-विमोचनम्
Karmic bonds untying,
भक्ताय च-अनुरक्ताय
to the devotee and attached,
ब्रूहि विश्वेश्वर-ईश्वर
do say, O Of the lords' The Lord
O Lotus petal eyed Lord! O Lord of the Lords'! Do tell me of this, which unties the bonds of Karma, to me, devoted and attached to You.
श्री भगवान्-उवाच -
The Lord said -
न ह्यन्तोऽनन्तपारस्य कर्मकाण्डस्य चोद्धव ।
संक्षिप्तं वर्णयिष्यामि यथावदनुपूर्वश: ॥६॥
न हि-अन्त:-अनन्त-पारस्य
not indeed is end of the endless
कर्म-काण्डस्य च-उद्धव
of the rituals acts, and, O Uddhava!
संक्षिप्तम् वर्णयिष्यामि
in short will describe,
यथा-वत्-अनुपूर्वश:
as it is, sequentially
O Uddhava! There is no end of the endless rituals' acts of the Vedas. I will describe it in short, in its proper perspective, and in its order of sequence.
वैदिकस्तान्त्रिको मिश्र इति मे त्रिविधो मख: ।
त्रयाणामीप्सितेनैव विधिना मां समर्चयेत् ॥७॥
वैदिक:-तान्त्रिक: मिश्र:-
Vedic, Tantric, and mixed,
इति मे त्रिविध: मख:
these are three types of worship
त्रयाणाम्-ईप्सितेन-एव
of the three by the one preferred only
विधिना माम् समर्चयेत्
procedure Me may worship
Vedic, Tantric, and a mixture of the two, these are the three types of worship. Of the three types of worship, one may worship Me with the procedure of the one which is preferred.
यदा स्वनिगमेनोक्तं द्विजत्वं प्राप्य पूरुष: ।
यथा यजेत मां भक्त्या श्रद्धया तन्निबोध मे ॥८॥
यदा स्व-निगमेन-उक्तम्
when, ones' by the Vedas prescribed
द्विजत्वम् प्राप्य पूरुष:
Braahmanism attained man,
यथा यजेत माम् भक्त्या
as may worship Me devotedly,
श्रद्धया तत्-निबोध मे
with reverence, that hear from Me
When one has obtained the status of a Braahmana, as prescribed by the Vedas, then, the procedure with which he may worship Me, that hear from Me.
अर्चायां स्थण्डिलेऽग्नौ वा सूर्ये वाप्सु हृदि द्विजे ।
द्रव्येण भक्तियुक्तोऽर्चेत् स्वगुरुं माममायया ॥९॥
अर्चायाम् स्थण्डिले-अग्नौ
in an image, a platform, fire,
वा सूर्ये वा-अप्सु हृदि द्विजे
or Sun, or water, in heart, Braahmana,
द्रव्येण भक्ति-युक्त:-अर्चेत्
with material, devotion having, may worship
स्व-गुरुम् माम्-अमायया
own preceptor, Me, unfazed
One may worship Me, his own preceptor, with the required material of worship, with full devotion, through an image, on a stool like platform, in the Fire, or the Sun, or water, in the heart, or a Braahmana, unfazed, without seeking results.
पूर्वं स्नानं प्रकुर्वीत धौतदन्तोऽङ्गशुद्धये ।
उभयैरपि च स्नानं मन्त्रैर्मृद्ग्रहणादिना ॥१०॥
पूर्वम् स्नानम् प्रकुर्वीत
first bath must take
धौत-दन्त:-अङ्ग-शुद्धये
having cleaned teeth, of body purifying,
उभयै:-अपि च स्नानम्
by both even and bathe
मन्त्रै:-मृद्-ग्रहण-आदिना
mantras, mud cow dung and others
Having cleaned the teeth, must first bathe uttering the mantras of both, Vedas and Taantra, and smearing the body with mud and cow dung and other things must bathe again.
सन्ध्योपास्त्यादिकर्माणि वेदेनाचोदितानि मे ।
पूजां तै: कल्पयेत् सम्यक् सङ्कल्प: कर्मपावनीम् ॥११॥
सन्ध्या-उपास्ति-आदि-कर्माणि
evening prayers and other duties
वेदेन-आचोदितानि मे
by the Vedas prescribed, to Me
पूजाम् तै: कल्पयेत् सम्यक्
worship by them should perform well
सङ्कल्प: कर्म-पावनीम्
with a vow, to Karmas eradicate
With the evening prayers and other duties prescribed by the Vedas, one should perform worship to Me, well, with a vow to eradicate the Karmas.
शैली दारुमयी लौही लेप्या लेख्या च सैकती ।
मनोमयी मणिमयी प्रतिमाष्टविधा स्मृता ॥१२॥
शैली दारुमयी लौही
of stone, wooden, of iron,
लेप्या लेख्या च सैकती
of clay or sandal paste, painted, and of sand
मनोमयी मणिमयी
conceived by the mind, made of gems,
प्रतिमा-अष्ट-विधा: स्मृता
images of eight types are said to be
Images are said to be of eight types, made of stone, wooden, made of iron or any metal, made by clay or sandal paste, painted, made of sand, conceived in the mind, and made of gems.
चलाचलेति द्विविधा प्रतिष्ठा जीवमन्दिरम् ।
उद्वासावाहने न स्त: स्थिरायामुद्धवार्चने ॥१३॥
चल-अचले-इति द्विविधा:
moveable immovable thus, of two types
प्रतिष्ठा: जीव-मन्दिरम्
are images, of My the temples,
उद्वास-आवाहने न स्त:
disposal, invoking are not there
स्थिरायाम्-उद्धव-अर्चने
in the immovable O Uddhava! In worship
There are two types of images which are My temples, the moveable and the immoveable. O Uddhava! In daily worship, and in the immoveable images, the invoking of the presence and the bidding of farewell is not done.
अस्थिरायां विकल्प: स्यात् स्थण्डिले तु भवेद् द्वयम् ।
स्नपनं त्वविलेप्यायामन्यत्र परिमार्जनम् ॥१४॥
अस्थिरायाम् विकल्प: स्यात
in the moveable, option may be
स्थण्डिले तु भवेद् द्वयम्
for the sand one there may be both,
स्नपनम् तु-अविलेप्यायाम्-
bathe that which cannot be smeared,
अन्यत्र परिमार्जनम्
the others may be sprinkled with water
For the moveable images there may be options. For the sand image both may be applied. The painted, made of clay, made of sandal paste may be sprinkled with water and the others are to be bathed.
द्रव्यै: प्रसिद्धैर्मद्याग: प्रतिमादिष्वमायिन: ।
भक्तस्य च यथा लब्धैर्हृदि भावेन चैव हि ॥१५॥
द्रव्यै: प्रसिद्धै:-मत्-याग:
with articles best My worship
प्रतिमा-आदिषु-अमायिन:
through images and others, free of desires
भक्तस्य च यथा लब्धै:-
devotee and by as available,
हृदि भावेन चैव हि
in the heart, by emotions and only indeed
My worship through the images should be done with the best of articles. A desire-less devotee may worship Me with the available articles, and the devotee who worships Me in his heart, may do so only with love.
स्नानालङ्करणं प्रेष्ठमर्चायामेव उद्धव ।
स्थण्डिले तत्त्वविन्यासो वह्नावाज्यप्लुतं हवि: ॥१६॥
स्नान-अलङ्करणम् प्रेष्ठम्-
bathing and decorating to an installed image
अर्चायाम्-एव उद्धव
in worship only Uddhava!
स्थण्डिले तत्त्व-विन्यास:
on the raised ground, by the essence invoking
वह्नौ-आज्य-प्लुतम् हवि:
in the fire by ghee soaked oblation
O Uddhava! In an installed image bathing and decoration is desired, in the worship on a raised ground, it is by invoking of the essence of the deity, and when worshipping in the fire, it is by pouring ghee soaked oblation.
सूर्ये चाभ्यर्हणं प्रेष्ठं सलिले सलिलादिभि: ।
श्रद्धयोपाहृतं प्रेष्ठं भक्तेन मम वार्यपि ॥१७॥
सूर्ये च-अभ्यर्हणम् प्रेष्ठम्
in Sun and, Arghya and waiting upon
सलिले सलिल-आदिभि:
in the water, by water and others,
श्रद्धया-उपाहृतम् प्रेष्ठम्
with reverence, brought is welcome,
भक्तेन मम वारि-अपि
by the devotee to Me water also
In worshipping through the Sun, offering of Arghya, and waiting upon is desired, in the water by water. In fact, by a devotee even water brought to Me, with reverence, is most welcome.
भूर्यप्यभक्तोपहृतं न मे तोषाय कल्पते ।
गन्धो धूप: सुमनसो दीपोऽन्नाद्यं च किं पुन: ॥१८॥
भूरि-अपि-अभक्त:-उपहृतम्
many even by a non devotee brought
न मे तोषाय कल्पते
not for My pleasure becomes
गन्ध: धूप: सुमनस:
sandal paste, incense, flowers,
दीप:-अन्न-आद्यम् च किम् पुन:
light, food and others, and what more
Though many articles are brought to Me, by a non-devotee, like sandal paste, incense, flowers, light and food and what not, they do not happen to please Me.
शुचि: सम्भृतसम्भार: प्राग्दर्भै: कल्पितासन: ।
आसीन: प्रागुदग् वार्चेदर्चायामथ सम्मुख: ॥१९॥
शुचि: सम्भृत-सम्भार:
pure, gathered articles
प्राक्-दर्भै: कल्पित-आसन:
to the east mat made seat,
आसीन: प्राक्-उदक् वा-
sitting on, east north or
अर्चेत्-आर्चायाम्-अथ सम्मुख:
may worship, of the image then in front
A devotee, having gathered all required pure articles, seated on a mat of Darbha, with the Darbha pointing towards east, facing the east or north, in front of the image, should worship.
कृतन्यास: कृतन्यासां मदर्चा पाणिना मृजेत् ।
कलशं प्रोक्षणीयं च यथावदुपसाधयेत् ॥२०॥
कृत-न्यास: कृत-न्यासाम्
having been consecrated, the consecrated
मत्-अर्चा पाणिना मृजेत्
My image, with hand may rub
कलशम् प्रोक्षणीयम् च
the pitcher, the sprinkling vessel and
यथा-वत्-उपसाधयेत्
as required may arrange
The devotee should consecrate his own limbs, then should consecrate My image, and rub it with his own hands. Gathering together the water pitcher, the water sprinkler and other things, should arrange them as required.
तदद्भिर्देवयजनं द्रव्याण्यात्मानमेव च ।
प्रोक्ष्य पात्राणि त्रीण्यद्भिस्तैस्तैर्द्रव्यैश्च साधयेत् ॥२१॥
तत्-अद्भि:-देव-यजनम्
by that water, the temple,
द्रव्याणि-आत्मानम्-एव च
the articles, and himself also and
प्रोक्ष्य पात्राणि त्रीणि-अद्भि:-
the sprinkling vessels three with water
तै:-तै:-द्रव्यै:-च साधयेत्
with all those articles should put
With that water he should sprinkle the temple, the articles and himself also, and should arrange three vessels of water and the other articles.
पाद्यार्घ्याचमनीयार्थं त्रीणि पात्राणि दैशिक: ।
हृदा शीर्ष्णाथ शिखया गायत्र्या चाभिमन्त्रयेत् ॥२२॥
पाद्य-अर्घ्य-आचमनीय-अर्थम्
feet, hands and mouth rinsing for,
त्रीणि पात्राणि दैशिक:
three vessels the worshipper
हृदा-शीर्ष्णा-अथ शिखया
in the heart, head then the crown
गायत्र्या च-अभिमन्त्रयेत्
by Gaayatri and may infuse
Then, the worshipper should rinse the feet, hands and mouth with the water of the three vessels and then infuse the heart, head and the crown by the Gaayatri Mantra.
पिण्डे वाय्वग्निसंशुद्धे हृत्पद्मस्थां परां मम ।
अण्वीं जीवकलां ध्यायेन्नादान्ते सिद्धभाविताम् ॥२३॥
पिण्डे वायु-अग्नि-संशुद्धे
body, by wind, fire purified,
हृत्-पद्म-स्थाम् पराम् मम
in heart lotus seated Supreme Me
अण्वीम् जीव-कलाम् ध्यायेत्-
the subtle form, Jiva the part may contemplate on
नाद-अन्ते सिद्ध भाविताम्
on echo's end, by the accomplished contemplated
The body, purified by the gastric wind and fire, the Jiva, a part of The Supreme Me, should contemplate on That Me, installed on the lotus seat in his heart, till the end of the echo of Pranava, just as the accomplished souls have contemplated.
तयाऽऽत्मभूतया पिण्डे व्याप्ते सम्पूज्य तन्मय: ।
आवाह्यार्चादिषु स्थाप्य न्यस्ताङ्गं मां प्रपूजयेत् ॥२४॥
तया-आत्म-भूतया पिण्डे
by that self permeated body
व्याप्ते सम्पूज्य तन्मय:
covered worshipping well with that form
आवाह्य-अर्चा-आदिषु स्थाप्य
invoke with Mantras and all install
न्यस्त-अङ्गम् माम् प्रपूजयेत्
in the infused limbs Me worship
When the body is thus permeated and covered with that subtle form, the self, one should worship that well mentally, and then with Mantras must invoke and install in the Mantra infused limbs, and worship Me.
पाद्योपस्पर्शार्हणादीनुपचारान् प्रकल्पयेत् ।
धर्मादिभिश्च नवभि: कल्पयित्वाऽऽसनं मम ॥२५॥
पाद्य-उपस्पर्श-अर्हण-आदीन्-
feet, hands, mouth washing and other
उपचारान् प्रकल्पयेत्
articles must get ready,
धर्म-आदिभि:-च नवभि:
by righteousness and other nine
कल्पयित्वा-आसनम् मम
prepare a seat for Me
Water for washing the feet, hands and mouth should be assembled, and a seat with righteousness and other nine qualities, should be prepared for Me.
पद्ममष्टदलं तत्र कर्णिकाकेसरोज्ज्वलम् ।
उभाभ्यां वेदतन्त्राभ्यां मह्यं तूभयसिद्धये ॥२६॥
पद्मम्-अष्ट-दलम् तत्र
lotus of eight petals there
कर्णिका-केसर-उज्ज्वलम्
pericarp and filaments bright
उभाभ्याम् वेद-तन्त्राभ्याम्
by both, Vedas and Tantra
मह्यम् तु-उभय-सिद्धये
to Me indeed for both securing
Should place Me on a lotus of eight petals, with its pericarp and filament bright, with both Vedic and Tantric methods, to secure both, worldly enjoyment and final beatitude.
सुदर्शनं पाञ्चजन्यं गदासीषुधनुर्हलान् ।
मुसलं कौस्तुभं मालां श्रीवत्सं चानुपूजयेत् ॥२७॥
सुदर्शनम् पाञ्चजन्यम्
Sudarshana, Paanchajanya,
गदा-असि-इषु-धनु:-हलान्
the mace, the sword, the bow, the ploughs,
मुसलम् कौस्तुभम् मालाम्
the pestle, the Kaustubha, the garland,
श्रीवत्सम् च-अनुपूजयेत्
Shree Vatsa, and worship one by one
Then, in order of sequence should worship the Sudarshana discus, the Paanchajanya conch, the Kaumodaki mace, the sword, the bows the arrows and the plough, the pestle, the Kaustubha gem, the Vaijayanti garland, and Shree Vatsa.
नन्दं सुनन्दं गरुडं प्रचण्डं चण्डमेव च ।
महाबलं बलं चैव कुमुदं कुमुदेक्षणम् ॥२८॥
नन्दम् सुनन्दम् गरुडम्
Nanda, Sunanda, Gaduda,
प्रचण्डम् चण्डम्-एव च
Prachanda, Chanda, also and
महाबलम् बलम् च-एव
Mahaabala, Bala, and also
कुमुदम् कुमुद-ईक्षणम्
Kumuda and Kumudeekshana
And should also worship the eight attendents of The Lord, Nanda, Sunanda, Gaduda, Prachanda, Chanda, also and Mahaabala, Bala, and also Kumuda and Kumudeekshana.
दुर्गां विनायकं व्यासं विष्वक्सेनं गुरून् सुरान् ।
स्वे स्वे स्थाने त्वभिमुखान् पूजयेत्प्रोक्षणादिभि: ॥२९॥
दुर्गाम् विनायकम् व्यासम्
Durga, Vinaayakas, Vyaasa,
विष्वक्सेनम् गुरून् सुरान्
Vishvaksena, the preceptors, the gods,
स्वे स्वे स्थाने तु-अभिमुखान्
in own places indeed facing
पूजयेत्-प्रोक्षण-आदिभि:
should worship with washing waters and others
One should also worship, placed in their own place, facing The Lord, Durga, Vinaayakas, Vyaasa, Vishvaksena, the preceptors, the gods, with washing waters and other articles.
चन्दनोशीरकर्पूरकुङ्कुमागुरुवासितै: ।
सलिलै: स्नापयेन्मन्त्रैर्नित्यदा विभवे सति ॥३०॥
चन्दन-उशीर-कर्पूर
with sandal paste, Ushira, camphor,
कुङ्कुम-अगुरु-वासितै:
saffron, aloe-wood scented
सलिलै: स्नापयेत्-मन्त्रै:-
waters, may bathe (Me) with Mantras,
नित्यदा विभवे सति
every day, if wealthy
If he has enough wealth, he may every day bathe me with sandal paste, Ushira, camphor, saffron, aloe-wood scented waters, and with pronouncing Mantras simultaneously.
स्वर्णघर्मानुवाकेन महापुरुषविद्यया ।
पौरुषेणापि सूक्तेन सामभी राजनादिभि: ॥३१॥
स्वर्ण-घर्म-अनुवाकेन

सामभी राजनादिभि:
Saama and Rajana and others
Mantras like, by Swarna Gharma Anuvaak, Mahaapurusha Vidyaa, and also the Paurusha Sookta, Saama and Rajana and others.
वस्त्रोपवीताभरण पत्रस्रग्गन्धलेपनै: ।
अलङ्कुर्वीत सप्रेम मद्भक्तो मां यथोचितम् ॥३२॥
वस्त्र-उपवीत-आभरण
with clothes, sacred thread, ornaments
पत्र-स्रक्-गन्ध-लेपनै:
basil leaves, garland, scent and sandal paste,
अलङ्कुर्वीत सप्रेम
adorn with love,
मत्-भक्त: माम् यथा-उचितम्
My devotee, Me as proper
My devotee may adorn Me, as proper, with clothes, sacred thread, ornaments, basil leaves, garland, scent and sandal paste, and with love.
पाद्यमाचमनीयं च गन्धं सुमनसोऽक्षतान् ।
धूपदीपोपहार्याणि दद्यान्मे श्रद्धयार्चक: ॥३३॥
पाद्यम्-आचमनीयम् च
water for feet washing, mouth rinsing, and
गन्धम् सुमनस:-अक्षतान्
scent, flowers, unbroken rice,
धूप-दीप-उपहार्याणि
incense, light, food articles,
दद्यात्-मे श्रद्धया-अर्चक:
give to Me, with reverence the worshipper
The worshipper should give to Me with reverence, water for feet washing, mouth rinsing, and scent, flowers, unbroken rice, incense, light, and food articles.
गुडपायससर्पींषि शष्कुल्यापूपमोदकान् ।
संयावदधिसूपांश्च नैवेद्यं सति कल्पयेत् ॥३४॥
गुड-पायस-सर्पींषि
Guda, Kheer, ghee,
शष्कुल्या:-पूप-मोदकान्
puris, pudas, laddus,
संयाव-दधि-सूपान्-च
halva, curd, soup and
नैवेद्यम् सति कल्पयेत्
food for offering if possible may make
If possible may make food for offering, like, Guda, Kheer, ghee, puris, pudas, laddus, halva, curd, and lentil soup.
अभ्यङ्गोन्मर्दनादर्शदन्तधावाभिषेचनम् ।
अन्नाद्यगीतनृत्यादि पर्वणि स्युरुतान्वहम् ॥३५॥
अभ्यङ्ग-उन्मर्दन-आदर्श
on all body smear with paste, mirror
दन्त-धाव-अभिषेचनम्
teeth cleaning, bathing,
अन्न-आद्य-गीत-नृत्य-आदि
food edibles, music, dance other
पर्वणि स्यु:-उत-अन्वहम्
on festivals may be, or every day
One may rub sandal paste on My body, show Me the mirror, clean My teeth, bathe Me, give Me food and edibles, and every day or on festivals entertain Me with music and dance, etc.
विधिना विहिते कुण्डे मेखलागर्तवेदिभि: ।
अग्निमाधाय परित: समूहेत् पाणिनोदितम् ॥३६॥
विधिना विहिते कुण्डे
by the method prepared in the pit
मेखला-गर्त-वेदिभि:
small wall, hollow platform with
अग्निम्-आधाय परित:
fire placing, on all sides
समूहेत् पाणिना-उदितम्
gather and by hand fan it
By the prescribed method should prepare a pit with a hollow surrounded by small walls, on a platform, and should place the fire in it on all sides and then gather it and fan it with the hand.
परिस्तीर्याथ पर्युक्षेदन्वाधाय यथाविधि ।
प्रोक्षण्याऽऽसाद्य द्रव्याणि प्रोक्ष्याग्नौ भावयेत् माम् ॥३७॥
परिस्तीर्य-अथ पर्युक्षेत्-
sprinkling then, consecrated
अन्वाधाय यथा-विधि
the fuel as the method,
प्रोक्षण्या-आसाद्य द्रव्याणि
by the consecrated keeping the articles,
प्रोक्ष्य-अग्नौ भावयेत् माम्
in the consecrated fire contemplate on Me
Must keep the fuel for the fire and the articles, consecrated by sprinkling the consecrated water, then in the fire should contemplate on Me.
तप्तजाम्बूनदप्रख्यं शङ्खचक्रगदाम्बुजै: ।
लसच्चतुर्भुजं शान्तं पद्म किञ्जल्कवाससम् ॥३८॥
तप्त-जाम्बूनद-प्रख्यम्
molten gold like shining (image)
शङ्ख-चक्र गदा-अम्बुजै:
with conch, disc, mace, lotus,
लसत्-चतुर्भुजम् शान्तम्
adorned with four arms, calm,
पद्म किञ्जल्क-वाससम्
lotus filament yellow clad in
Should contemplate My image in the fire, like bright molten gold, distinguished with four arms, adorned with conch, disc, mace, lotus, and clad in lotus filament like yellow silk.
स्फुरत्किरीटकटककटिसूत्रवराङ्गदम् ।
श्रीवत्सवक्षसं भ्राजत्कौस्तुभं वनमालिनम् ॥३९॥
स्फुरत्-किरीट-कटक-
brilliant diadem, girdle
कटि-सूत्र-वर-अङ्गदम्
on the waist string, excellent armlets,
श्रीवत्स-वक्षसम् भ्राजत्-
Shree Vatsa, on the chest, lustrous
कौस्तुभम् वन-मालिनम्
Kaustubha, sylvan flower garland
With a brilliant diadem, girdle string on the waist, excellent armlets, on the bosom Shree Vatsa and the lustrous Kaustubha, and garland of sylvan flowers.
ध्यायन्नभ्यर्च्य दारूणि हविषाभिघृतानि च ।
प्रास्याज्यभागावाघारौ दत्त्वा चाज्यप्लुतं हवि: ॥४०॥
ध्यायन्-अभ्यर्च्य दारूणि
contemplating and worshipping the sticks
हविषा-अभिघृतानि च
with ghee soaked in ghee and
प्रास्य-आज्य-भागौ-आघारौ
offering oblations in two, Aabhaasa,
दत्त्वा च-आज्य-प्लुतम् हवि:
giving, and ghee soaked oblation
One should contemplate and worship Me, while offering the two oblations of Aaghaara, with ghee soaked sacrificial sticks, and giving the ghee soaked oblations.
जुहुयान्मूलमन्त्रेण षोडशर्चावदानत: ।
धर्मादिभ्यो यथान्यायं मन्त्रै: स्विष्टकृतं बुध: ॥४१॥
जुहुयात्-मूल-मन्त्रेण
should pour oblations with fundamental Mantra
षोडश-ऋचा-अवदानत:
the sixteen Mantras, then by eight letter Mantra
धर्म-आदिभ्य: यथा-न्यायम्
for Dharma and other as per the system
मन्त्रै: स्विष्ट-कृतम् बुध:
with Mantras 'Shwishti' oblation, the wise
The wise first by the fundamental Mantra, then by the sixteen Mantras, then by the eight letter Mantra, as per the system, oblations pours, for Dharma and others, with the Mantras 'Shwishti'.
अभ्यर्च्याथ नमस्कृत्य पार्षदेभ्यो बलिं हरेत् ।
मूलमन्त्रं जपेद् ब्रह्म स्मरन्नारायणात्मकम् ॥४२॥
अभ्यर्च्य-अथ नमस्कृत्य
having worshipped, then bowing
पार्षदेभ्य: बलिम् हरेत्
to the attendents oblations should should offer,
मूल-मन्त्रम् जपेत् ब्रह्म
fundamental Mantra pronouncing, Brahman
स्मरन्-नारायण-आत्मकम्
remembering, in Naaraayana form
After having worshipped and bowed to Me, then he must offer oblations to the attendents, and pronouncing the fundamental Mantra, contemplate on Brahman, in the form of Naaraayana.
दत्त्वाऽऽचमनमुच्छेषं विष्वक्सेनाय कल्पयेत् ।
मुखवासं सुरभिमत् ताम्बूलाद्यमथार्हयेत् ॥४३॥
दत्त्वा-आचमनम्-उच्छेषम्
giving water for mouth rinsing, the left
विष्वक्सेनाय कल्पयेत्
to Vishvaksena offer
मुखवासं सुरभिमत्
mouth freshener, scented,
ताम्बूल-आद्यम्-अथ-अर्हयेत्
beetle leaf then offer
After giving water to rinse the mouth, the remnant to Vishvaksena may offer. Then scented mouth freshener and beetle leaves be offered.
उपगायन् गृणन् नृत्यन् कर्माण्यभिनयन् मम ।
मत्कथा: श्रावयञ्छृण्वन् मुहूर्तं क्षणिको भवेत् ॥४४॥
उपगायन् गृणन् नृत्यन्
singing, describing, dancing,
कर्माणि-अभिनयन् मम
exploits recounting Mine,
मत्-कथा: श्रावयन्-शृण्वन्
My stories telling and listening to,
मुहूर्तम् क्षणिक: भवेत्
for a minute joyous become
Then, he should sing, dance, recount My exploits, tell about them and listen to them, and for a moment should become joyous.
स्तवैरुच्चावचै: स्तोत्रै: पौराणै: प्राकृतैरपि ।
स्तुत्वा प्रसीद भगवन्निति वन्देत दण्डवत् ॥४५॥
स्तवै:-उच्च-अवचै: स्तोत्रै:
with long short psalms
पौराणै: प्राकृतै:-अपि
of Vedas, human even
स्तुत्वा प्रसीद भगवन्-
glorifying 'Be Pleased, O Lord!'
इति वन्देत दण्डवत्
thus should pray, falling flat on the ground
With long and short hymns and psalms of the Vedas and even composed by human beings, should glorify Me, and then pray saying, 'O Lord! May Thou be pleased', and fall flat on the ground in prostration.
शिरो मत्पादयो: कृत्वा बाहुभ्यां च परस्परम् ।
प्रपन्नं पाहि मामीश भीतं मृत्युग्रहार्णवात् ॥४६॥
शिर: मत्-पादयो: कृत्वा
head in My feet placing,
बाहुभ्याम् च परस्परम्
with arms and together,
प्रपन्नम् पाहि माम्-ईश
'Shelter seeking, save me, O Lord!
भीतम् मृत्यु-ग्रह-अर्णवात्
afraid of death alligator ocean'
The head should place on My feet and bring the arms together, and pray, 'O Lord! Save me, the shelter seeker, from the death alligator infested ocean of worldly existence.'
इति शेषां मया दत्तां शिरस्याधाय सादरम् ।
उद्वासयेच्चेदुद्वास्यं ज्योतिर्ज्योतिषि तत् पुन: ॥४७॥
इति शेषाम् मया दत्ताम्
thus, the rest, by Me given,
शिरसि-आधाय सादरम्
on the head taking, with reverence,
उद्वासयेत्-चेत्-उद्वास्यम्
may dispose if to be disposed
ज्योति:-ज्योतिषि तत् पुन:
the effulgence in flame that again
Thus, and the rest of the articles, should take on the head with reverence, as given by Me. Then, if the image is to be disposed, its divine effulgence should be replaced in the divine flame and then disposed off.
अर्चादिषु यदा यत्र श्रद्धा मां तत्र चार्चयेत् ।
सर्वभूतेष्वात्मनि च सर्वात्माहमवस्थित: ॥४८॥
अर्चादिषु यदा यत्र श्रद्धा
in the images whenever where ever reverence,
माम् तत्र च-अर्चयेत्
Me there and may worship,
सर्व-भूतेषु-आत्मनि च
in all the beings and in ones' self
सर्व-आत्मा-अहम्-अवस्थित:
of all the souls I dwell
One may worship me in which ever image, when ever and where ever, when one conceives reverence. As, I dwell in all the beings, in ones own self and in all the souls.
एवं क्रियायोगपथै: पुमान् वैदिकतान्त्रिकै: ।
अर्चन्नुभयत: सिद्धिं मत्तो विन्दत्यभीप्सिताम् ॥४९॥
एवम् क्रिया-योग-पथै:
thus, by the rituals' in the Yoga path
पुमान् वैदिक-तान्त्रिकै:
a man, by Vedic or Tantric
अर्चन्-उभयत: सिद्धिम्
worshipping, in both success
मत्त: विन्दति-अभीप्सिताम्
from Me attains desired
Thus, worshipping Me by the rituals taught in the path of Yoga of Vedas or of Tantra, a man attains success of the kind he desires, in this world and the other.
मदर्चां सम्प्रतिष्ठाप्य मन्दिरं कारयेद् दृढम् ।
पुष्पोद्यानानि रम्याणि पूजायात्रोत्सवाश्रितान् ॥५०॥
मत्-अर्चा सम्प्रतिष्ठाप्य
My image well installing,
मन्दिरम् कारयेत् दृढम्
temple should get made strong
पुष्प-उद्यानानि रम्याणि
flower gardens, pleasant,
पूजा-यात्रा-उत्सव-आश्रितान्
worship, congregations, festivals, based
Getting built a sturdy temple, should install my image therein, and get pleasant gardens made, and arrange for worship, congregations, festivals based events.
पूजादीनां प्रवाहर्थं महापर्वस्वथान्वहम् ।
क्षेत्रापणपुरग्रामान् दत्त्वा मत्सार्ष्टितामियात् ॥५१॥
पूजा-आदीनाम् प्रवाह-अर्थम्
for worship and others to continue,
महा-पर्वसु-अथ-अन्वहम्
on great occasions, and every day,
क्षेत्र-आपण-पुर-ग्रामान्
fields, market, towns, villages,
दत्त्वा मत्-सार्ष्टिताम्-इयात्
giving, My like fortune may enjoy
For the continuity of the worship, on big festivals, and even for every day, must provide fields, markets, towns and villages. By doing so, he may enjoy fortune like Mine.
प्रतिष्ठया सार्वभौमं सद्मना भुवनत्रयम् ।
पूजादिना ब्रह्मलोकं त्रिभिर्मत्साम्यतामियात् ॥५२॥
प्रतिष्ठया सार्व-भौमम्
by installation, of the whole globe,
सद्मना भुवन-त्रयम्
by temple, of the three worlds,
पूजा-आदिना ब्रह्म-लोकम्
by worship and other Brahma loka,
त्रिभि:-मत्-साम्यताम्-इयात्
by the three, (state) Me equal to attains
By installing an image, one attains sovereignty of the whole globe, by erecting a temple, attains the domain of the three worlds, and by arranging for worship and other things, one attains Brahma Loka, and by all the three one attains the state of equality with Me.
मामेव नैरपेक्ष्येण भक्तियोगेन विन्दति ।
भक्तियोगं स लभत एवं य: पूजयेत माम् ॥५३॥
माम्-एव नैरपेक्ष्येण
Me, thus, not desiring
भक्ति-योगेन विन्दति
devotion path attains
भक्ति-योगम् स: लभते
devotion path he attains
एवम् य: पूजयेत माम्
like this who worships Me
Thus, with path of devotion, without desires, one attains Me. He attains the path of devotion who worships Me in this manner.
य: स्वदत्तां परैर्दत्तां हरेत सुरविप्रयो: ।
वृत्तिं स जायते विड्भुग् वर्षाणामयुतायुतम् ॥५४॥
य: स्व-दत्ताम् परै:-दत्ताम्
he who, by self given, by others given
हरेत सुर-विप्रयो: वृत्तिम्
takes away of the deity Braahmana, money
स: जायते विड्भुग्
he is born as ordure eater
वर्षाणाम्-अयुत-अयुतम्
for years tens of crores
One who takes away the endowment meant for the deity and the Braahmanas, he, for tens of crores of years is born as ordure eating creature.
कर्तुश्च सारथेर्हेतोरनुमोदितुरेव च ।
कर्मणां भागिन: प्रेत्य भूयो भूयसि तत् फलम् ॥५५॥
कर्तु:-च सारथे:-हेतो:-
of the doer and assistant, for the purpose,
अनुमोदितु:-एव च
prompter also and
कर्मणाम् भागिन: प्रेत्य
of the actions partnership, after death,
भूय: भूयसि तत् फलम्
much and much more, its result
For the accomplisher of such acts, and his prompters and associates are also partners in the good or bad results of such deeds, after death.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां एकादशस्कन्धे सप्तविंश: अध्याय: ॥२७॥
Thus ends the twenty-seventh discourse in Book Eleven of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
