श्री शुक उवाच -
Shri Shuka said -
एवमेतत् पुरा पृष्टो मैत्रेयो भगवान् किल ।
क्षत्त्रा वनं प्रविष्टेन त्यक्त्वा स्वगृहमृद्धिमत् ॥१॥
एवम्-एतत् पुरा पृष्ट:
thus this, in the past, asked
मैत्रेय: भगवान् किल
to divine Maitreya, indeed
क्षत्त्रा वनम् प्रविष्टेन
Vidura, when (he had) entered the forest
त्यक्त्वा स्व-गृहम्-ऋद्धिमत्
quitting his own house prosperous
In this same manner, this same question, was asked to the divine sage Maitreya, by Vidura, when Vidura had retired to the forest quitting his own prosperous house.
यद्वा अयं मन्त्रकृद्वो भगवानखिलेश्वर: ।
पौरवेन्द्रगृहं हित्वा प्रविवेशात्मसात्कृतम् ॥२॥

Or, when this Lord, the protector of the universe, Who had gone there as your massage bearer, refused the hospitality, of the king of the Pauravas, Duryodhana, and entered the house of Vidura, taking it as His own.
राजा-उवाच -
The king said -
कुत्र क्षत्तुर्भगवता मैत्रेयेणास सङ्गम: ।
कदा वा सह संवाद एतद्वर्णय न: प्रभो ॥३॥
कुत्र क्षत्तु:-भगवता मैत्रेयेण-
where Vidura's with divine Maitreya
आस सङ्गम:

when or mutual conversation
एतत्-वर्णय न: प्रभो
this describe to us, my lord
Where did Vidura happened to meet the divine sage Maitreya, and when did they have the mutual conversation. My lord! Please describe all this to me.
न ह्यल्पार्थोदयस्तस्य विदुरस्यामलात्मन: ।
तस्मिन् वरीयसि प्रश्न: साधुवादोपबृंहित: ॥४॥
न हि-अल्प-अर्थ-उदय:-
not indeed, of small bearings
तस्य विदुरस्य-
his Vidura's
अमल-आत्मन:
of pure hearted
तस्मिन् वरीयसि
more-over, in the noble (sage Maitreya)
प्रश्न: साधुवाद-उपबृंहित:
the question applaud generates
The question put by the pure hearted Vidura, could not have been of small consequence, as it was answered by the noble sage and generated applaude from him.
सूत उवाच -
Soota said -
स एवमृषिवर्योऽयं पृष्टो राज्ञा परीक्षिता ।
प्रत्याह तं सुबहुवित्प्रीतात्मा श्रूयतामिति ॥५॥

he, thus, the highest of sages, this

asked by the king Pareekshita
प्रत्याह तम् सुबहुवित्-
replied to him, the all-wise
प्रीत-आत्मा श्रूयताम्-इति
pleased at heart, 'listen' thus
When the foremost of the sages was thus asked by king Pareekshita, the all-wise, and pleased at heart sage Shuka, replied saying, 'Listen'.
यदा तु राजा स्वसुतानासाधून् पुष्णन्नधर्मेण विनष्टदृष्टि: ।
भ्रातुर्यविष्ठस्य सुतान् विबन्धून् प्रवेश्य लाक्षाभवने ददाह ॥६॥
यदा तु राजा
when, indeed, the king (Dhritaraashtra)
स्व-सुतान्-असाधून्
own sons wicked
पुष्णन्-अधर्मेण
supporting unrighteous
विनष्ट-दृष्टि:
(with) lost eyes
भ्रातु:-यविष्ठस्य

प्रवेश्य लाक्षा-भवने
lodged in a lac house

set on fire
Indeed, when, king Dhritaraashtra, who was blind, unrighteously supported his own wicked sons, and lodged his younger brother Paandu's fatherless sons in a house of lac and put it ablaze.
यदा सभायां कुरुदेवदेव्या: केशाभिमर्शं सुतकर्म गर्ह्यम् ।
न वारयामास नृप: स्नुषाया: स्वास्रैर्हरन्त्या: कुचकुङ्कुमानि ॥७॥
यदा सभायाम्

When in the assembly, the king Dhritaraashtra did not reprimand his son's abominable act of pulling by the hair the daughter-in-law, Kuru king Yudhishthira's queen Draupadi, she, washing away the saffron smeared on her bosom by her own tears.
द्यूते त्वधर्मेण जितस्य साधो: सत्यावलम्बस्य वनागतस्य ।
न याचतोऽदात्समयेन दायं तमो जुषाणो यदजातशत्रो: ॥८॥
द्यूते तु-अधर्मेण जितस्य
in gambling, indeed by unfair means winning
साधो: सत्य-अवलम्बस्य
of the guileless depending on truth
वन-आगतस्य
from the forest returning

blinded by greed

that of Yudhishtthira
In a game of gambling, the guileless Yudhishthira, who depended on truth, was by unfair means won over. When he returned and asked for his share as per the agreement, he was refused and did not get his share from Duryodhana who was blinded by greed.
यदा च पार्थप्रहित: सभायां जगद्गुरुर्यानि जगाद कृष्ण: ।
न तानि पुंसाममृतायनानि राजोरु मेने क्षतपुण्यलेश: ॥९॥
यदा च पार्थ-प्रहित:
when and by Yudhishtthira sent
सभायाम् जगत्-गुरु:-
to the court the universal Preceptor
यानि जगाद कृष्ण:

न तानि पुंसाम्-

अमृत-आयनानि
to the people nectre saturated
राजा-उरु मेने
the king at all regard
क्षत-पुण्य-लेश:
(because of) exhausting merit's remains
Yudhishthira sent the universal Preceptor, Krishna to the court of Duryodhana, where Krishna spoke words which are saturated with nectar for the devotees, but the king Duryodhana did not regard them at all, because the last of his merits were exhausted.
यदोपहूतो भवनं प्रविष्टो मन्त्राय पृष्ट: किल पूर्वजेन ।
अथाह तन्मन्त्रदृशां वरीयान् यन्मन्त्रिणो वैदुरिकं वदन्ति ॥१०॥
यदा-उपहूत: भवनम् प्रविष्ट:

advice asked for, indeed by elder brother (Dhritaraashtra)
अथ-आह तत्-
then said that,
मन्त्र-दृशाम् वरीयान्
of the advisers foremost (Vidura)
यत्-मन्त्रिण:
which the wise
वैदुरिकम् वदन्ति
'Vidurneeti' speak of as
When, the foremost of the advisers, Vidura, was invited by the elder brother, Dhritaraashtra, he entered the chamber, and on being asked for, gave an advice, which by the wise is called 'Vidurneeti'.
अजातशत्रो: प्रतियच्छदायं तितिक्षतो दुर्विषहं तवाग: ।
सहानुजो यत्र वृकोदराहि: श्वसन् रुषा यत्त्वमलं बिभेषि ॥११॥
अजातशत्रो:
one who has no enemies (Yudhishtthira) his

from whom you are very much afraid
Vidura said ' Yudhishthira, who has no enemies, and who has been tolerating your wrong doings, return to him his rightful share. His younger brother Bheema just like a serpant, along with his younger brothers is hissing with anger, of whom you are very much afraid.
पार्थांस्तु देवो भगवान् मुकुन्दो गृहीतवान् सक्षितिदेवदेव: ।
आस्ते स्वपुर्यां यदुदेवदेवो विनिर्जिताशेषनृदेवदेव: ॥१२॥

along with the Braahmanas and gods

all the sovereigns and gods
The Lord, the God of the Yadu's, Who is staying in His own capital, Dwaaraka, He, the Lord Krishna, Mukunda, has adopted the Paandavas along with the Braahmanas and the gods, after having conquered all the great sovereigns.
स एष दोष: पुरुषद्विडास्ते गृहान् प्रविष्टो यमपत्यमत्या ।
पुष्णासि कृष्णाद् विमुखो गतश्रीस्त्यजाश्वशैवं कुलकौशलाय ॥१३॥

पुरुष-द्विड्-आस्ते
mankind's foe is present
गृहान् प्रविष्ट:
in the house having entered

त्यज-अश्व-शैवम्
abandon this horse stupid
कुल-कौशलाय
for the race benefit
This Duryodhan is a sinner and a foe of mankind who has entered your house and you are fostering him as a son. He is adverse to Shri Krishna, that is why you have lost your splendour. Abondon this stupid horse for the benefit of the race.
इत्यूचिवांस्तत्र सुयोधनेन प्रवृद्धकोपस्फुरिताधरेण ।
असत्कृत: सत्स्पृहणीयशील: क्षत्ता सकर्णानुजसौबलेन ॥१४॥
इति-ऊचिवान्-तत्र
this said there,
सुयोधनेन प्रवृद्ध-कोप-
by Duryodhana, in flared anger
स्फुरित-अधरेण असत्कृत:
with quivering lower lip, was insulted
सत्-स्पृहणीय-शील: क्षत्ता
by the saints coveted disposition, Vidura
स-कर्ण-अनुज-सौबलेन
along with Karna, younger brother, and Shakuni
There, this was said by Vidura, whose disposition is coveted by the saints. This made Duryodhana flare up in anger and his lower lip quivered, and he insulted Vidura along with Karna, his younger brother Dushaasana and Shakuni.
क एनमत्रोपजुहाव जिह्मं दास्या: सुतं यद्बलिनैव पुष्ट: ।
तस्मिन् प्रतीप: परकृत्य आस्ते निर्वास्यतामाशु पुराच्छ्वसान: ॥१५॥
क: एनम् अत्र-उपजुहाव

जिह्मम् दास्या: सुतम्
wicked maid's son
यत्-बलिना-एव पुष्ट:
whose bread only fattened
तस्मिन् प्रतीप:
in him going against
परकृत्ये आस्ते
for enemy's benefit stays
निर्वास्यताम्-आशु
throw him out soon
पुरात्-श्वसान:
from the city till he breathes
Who has called this wicked son of a maid servant, here? He goes against the same person on whose bread he has fattened, and works for the benefit of the enemy. Throw him out of the capital soon, while he breathes.
स इत्थमत्युल्बणकर्णबाणैर्भ्रातु: पुरो मर्मसु ताडितोऽपि ।
स्वयं धनुर्द्वारि निधाय मायां गतव्यथोऽयादुरु मानयान: ॥१६॥
स: इत्थम्-अति-उल्बण-
he (Vidura) thus, very harsh
कर्ण-बाणै:-भ्रातु: पुर:
for the ears arrows, in brother's presence
मर्मसु ताडित:-अपि स्वयम्
in the heart hurt even himself
धनु:-द्वारि निधाय
bow on the gate placing
मायाम् गत-व्यथ:-
Maayaa, foregoing hurt
अयात्-उरु मानयान:
went away, very much respecting
The very much heart wrenching harsh words were thus spoken to Vidura in the presence of his brother Dhritaraashtra, but Vidura did not mind the hurt because he respected Lord's Maayaa, and he placed the bow at the gate of the palace and went away.
स निर्गत: कौरवपुण्यलब्धो गजाह्वयात्तीर्थपद: पदानि ।
अन्वाक्रमत् पुण्यचिकीर्षयोर्व्याम् स्वधिष्ठितो यानि सहस्रमूर्ति: ॥१७॥
स निर्गत: कौरव-
he departed, (who) to the Kauravaas
पुण्य-लब्ध: गजाह्वयात्-
was a meritorious acquisition, from Hastinaapura
तीर्थ-पद: पदानि
the holy places, the feet (of The Lord)
अन्वाक्रमत्

पुण्य-चिकीर्षया-
religious merit to acquire
उर्व्याम् स्वधिष्ठित:
on the earth, resides
यानि सहस्र-मूर्ति:
where (The Lord) in thousands of forms
Vidura, who was a merit aquisition of the Kaurava race, departed from Hastinaapura, and with the intention of acquiring religious merit, undertook pigrimage to the holy places of the earth, which are the feet of The Lord and where the Lord resides in thousands of forms.
पुरेषु पुण्योपवनाद्रिकुञ्जेष्वपङ्कतोयेषु सरित्सर:सु ।
अनन्तलिङ्गै: समलंकृतेषु चचार तीर्थायतनेष्वनन्य: ॥१८॥
पुरेषु पुण्य-उपवन-अद्रि-
in cities, sacred groves, mountains,
कुञ्जेषु-अपङ्क-तोयेषु
gardens, clear watered
सरित्-सर:सु
rivers and lakes
अनन्त-लिङ्गै: समलंकृतेषु
many images graced by
चचार तीर्थ-आयतनेषु-
roamed about in holy places and temples
अनन्य:
all alone
Vidura, roamed about on foot, all alone, in the cities, the sacred groves, mountains, gardens, clear watered rivers and lakes, and in the holy places with temples graced by Lord's many images.
गां पर्यटन् मेध्यविविक्तवृत्ति: सदाप्लुतोऽध:शयनोऽवधूत: ।
अलक्षित: स्वैरवधूतवेषो व्रतानि चेरे हरितोषणानि ॥१९॥
गाम् पर्यटन्
the earth roaming
मेध्य-विविक्त-वृत्ति:
pure simple food (habits)
सदा-आप्लुत:-
always bathing (in holy waters)
अध:-शयन:-अवधूत:
on the floor sleeping, carefree
अलक्षित: स्वै:-अवधूत-वेष:
unrecognizable, by own (people) in an unkempt manner
व्रतानि चेरे
vows undertook
हरि-तोषणानि
for Shree Hari's pleasure
He, Vidura, roamed the earth, with a carefree attitude, following pure simple food habits, always bathing in holy waters, sleeping on the floor, in an unkempt manner, so that, he was not recognized even by his own people. And he undertook vows to please The Lord Hari.
इत्थं व्रजन् भारतमेव वर्षं कालेन यावद्-गतवान् प्रभासम् ।
तावच्छशास क्षितिमेकचक्रामेकातपत्रामजितेन पार्थ: ॥२०॥
इत्थम् व्रजन्
in this manner, travelling
भारतम्-एव वर्षम्
over Bhaarata Varsha
कालेन यावद्-गतवान्
in time when (he) reached
प्रभासम् तावत्-शशास
Prabhaasa then, ruled
क्षितिम्-एक-चक्राम्-
the globe, as one sovereign
एक-आतपत्राम्-
one undisputed
अजितेन पार्थ:
with Krishna, Paarth (Yudhishtthira)
In this manner, Vidura travelled all over Bhaarata Varsha, and in time reached Prabhaasa. By that time, the son of Pritha, Yudhishthira, was ruling as one and only undisputed sovereign, over the whole globe with the help of Shri Krishna.
तत्राथ शुश्राव सुहृद्विनष्टिं वनं यथा वेणुजवह्निसंश्रयम् ।
संस्पर्धया दग्धमथानुशोचन् सरस्वतीं प्रत्यगियाय तूष्णीम् ॥२१॥
तत्र-अथ शुश्राव
there, then heard
सुहृद्-विनष्टिम्
(of) the kinsmen's' destruction (due to internal jealousy)
वनम् यथा वेणुज वह्नि
the forest just as of bamboos born fire
संश्रयम् संस्पर्धया दग्धम्-
supported, by friction burns,
अथ-अनुशोचयन्
after that, grieving
सरस्वतीम् प्रत्यग्-
the (river) Sarasvati going to
इयाय तूष्णीम्
resorted silently
There, at Prabhaasa, Vidura heard of his kinsmen having perished due to mutual jealousy and strife, just like a forest fire is enhanced by the friction of the mutually supporting bamboos. Grieved at the news, he silently retired to the banks of river Sarasvati.
तस्यां त्रितस्योशनसो मनोश्च पृथोरथाग्नेरसितस्य वायो: ।
तीर्थं सुदासस्य गवां गुहस्य यच्छ्राद्धदेवस्य स आसिषेवे ॥२२॥
तस्याम् त्रितस्य-उशनस:
on her (bank) of Trita, Ushana,
मनो:-च पृथो:-अथ-
Manu, and Prithu, then
अग्ने:-असितस्य वायो:
Agni, Asit, of Vaayu
तीर्थम् सुदासस्य
the sacred places of Sudaas,
गवाम् गुहस्य
the cows, Guha
यत्-श्राद्धदेवस्य
those of Shraadhadeva
स: आसिषेवे
he visited and stayed there
On the banks of river Sarasvati, he visited and stayed at the sacred places of Trita, Ushana, Manu, Prithu, Fire, Asit, Wind, Sudaas, the cows, Guha and those of Shraadhadeva.
अन्यानि चेह द्विजदेवदेवै: कृतानि नानायतनानि विष्णो: ।
प्रत्यङ्गमुख्याङ्कितमन्दिराणि यद्दर्शनात् कृष्णमनुस्मरन्ति ॥२३॥
अन्यानि च-इह

प्रति-अङ्ग-मुख्य-

कृष्णम्-अनुस्मरन्ति
Krishna is remembered
Here, he, Vidura, also saw various abodes of Vishnu built by holy sages and gods and each tmple marked by the chief weapon of Vishnu, the disc - the Sudarshana, by the sight of which one was reminded of Shri Krishna.
ततस्त्वतिव्रज्य सुराष्ट्रमृद्धं सौवीरमत्स्यान् कुरुजाङ्गलांश्च ।
कालेन तावद्यमुनामुपेत्य तत्रोद्धवं भागवतं ददर्श ॥२४||
तत:-तु-अतिव्रज्य

Sauraashtra prosperous,
सौवीर-मत्स्यान्
Sauveera, Matsya,
कुरु-जाङ्गलान्-च

to Yamuna reaching
तत्र-उद्धवम्
there, Uddhava
भागवतम् ददर्श
the devotee, saw
Then, he jouneyed through the prosperous land of Saurashtra, Sauveera, Matsya, Kuru, Jaangala, and in due course reached the river Yamuna, where he met the great devotee Uddhava.
स वासुदेवानुचरं प्रशान्तं बृहस्पते: प्राक् तनयं प्रतीतम् ।
आलिङ्ग्य गाढं प्रणयेन भद्रं स्वानामपृच्छद् भगवत्प्रजानाम् ॥२५॥

of The Lord's protégés
Vidura with love closely embraced the servant of Vasudeva's son, Krishna, Uddhava who was most peaceful and well known as a pupil of sage Brihaspati. He then asked Uddhava of the well being of his own people and of the proteges of The Lord.
कच्चित्पुराणौ पुरुषौ स्वनाभ्यपाद्मानुवृत्त्येह किलावतीर्णौ ।
आसात उर्व्या: कुशलं विधाय कृतक्षणौ कुशलं शूरगेहे ॥२६॥
कच्चित्-पुराणौ पुरुषौ
is it that, the Primal Persons (Sri Balaraama and Sri Krishna)
स्व-नाभ्य-पाद्म-
from their own navel lotus,(appeared)
अनुवृत्त्या-इह
by (Brahma's) prayer, here,
किल-अवतीर्णौ
indeed descended
आसाते उर्व्या:
and are on the earth
कुशलम् विधाय
wellness bringing
कृत-क्षणौ
bringing delight (they two)
कुशलम् शूर-गेहे
are well in Shoorasena's house
Definitely, the two Primal Persons, Sri Balarama and Sri Krishna, responding to the prayer of Brahma, who had appeared from their own navel, descended on the earth, having brought about wellness and delight to the earth, they are well in the house of Shoorasena (the father of Vasudeva).
कच्चित्कुरूणां परम: सुहृन्नो भाम: स आस्ते सुखमङ्ग शौरि: ।
यो वै स्वसृणां पितृवद्ददाति वरान् वदान्यो वरतर्पणेन ॥२७॥

by pleasing their husbands
O Dear! Is our great adorable friend of the Kuru clan, Vasudeva happy? He, the large hearted one, like a father gives gifts to his sisters (Kunti and others), and also keeps their husbands pleased?
कच्चिद्वरूथाधिपतिर्यदूनां प्रद्युम्न आस्ते सुखमङ्ग वीर: ।
यं रुक्मिणी भगवतोऽभिलेभे आराध्य विप्रान् स्मरमादिसर्गे ॥२८॥

स्मरम्-आदि-सर्गे
(who) was Cupid in the previous incarnation
O Dear! The general of the Yadu's army, the heroic Pradyumna, Is he well, whom Rukmini had secured from the Lord, by propitiating the Braahmanas and who was the god of love, Cupid, in the previous incarnation.
कच्चित्सुखं सात्वतवृष्णिभोजदाशार्हकाणामधिप: स आस्ते ।
यमभ्यषिञ्चच्छतपत्रनेत्रो नृपासनाशां परिहृत्य दूरात् ॥२९॥

आशाम् परिहृत्य दूरात्

The ruler of the Saatvatas, Vrishnis, Bhojas and the Daashaarthas, Ugrasena, who had given up all hope to get the ruler's throne, far back, and who was later installed on the throne by the lotus-eyed Lord Krishna, is he well?
कच्चिद्-हरे: सौम्य सुत: सदृक्ष आस्तेऽग्रणी रथिनां साधु साम्ब: ।
असूत यं जाम्बवती व्रताढ्या देवं गुहं योऽम्बिकया धृतोऽग्रे ॥३०॥
कच्चिद्-हरे: सौम्य
is it that, The Lord's, O Dear (Uddhava)
सुत: सदृक्ष
the son like (his father, Krishna)
आस्ते-अग्रणी: रथिनाम्
is there, the foremost of charioteers'
साधु साम्ब: असूत यम्
faring well, Saamba, bore whom
जाम्बवती व्रत-आढ्या
Jaambavatee, (following) religious observances
देवम् गुहम् य:-
god Guha, who
अम्बिकया धृत:-अग्रे
by Ambika (Paarvati) was born earlier
O Dear Uddhava! Saamba, of whom Lord Krishna is like his father, and who is the foremost of charioters, is he faring well? Jaambawatee followed many religious observances when she bore him. Saamba was earlier born to Ambika, Parvati, as god Guha.
क्षेमं स कच्चिद्युयुधान आस्ते य: फाल्गुनाल्लब्धधनूरहस्य: ।
लेभेऽञ्जसाधोक्षजसेवयैव गतिं तदीयां यतिभिर्दुरापाम् ॥३१॥
क्षेमम् स: कच्चित्-
well he, is it
युयुधान: आस्ते
Yuyudhaana (Saatyaki) remains
य: फाल्गुनात्-
who, from Arjuna
लब्ध-धनू-रहस्य:
received bowman ship, with (its) secrets
लेभे-अञ्जसा
(and also) attained easily
अधोक्षज-सेवया-एव
by Krishna's service alone
गतिम् तदीयाम्
the status of His devotee
यतिभि:-दुरापाम्
by ascetics is difficult to achieve
Yuyudhaana, Saatyaki, who received the knowledge of bow-man-ship along with its secrets, from Arjuna, is he doing well? By serving Lord Krishna, he had easily attained the status of His devotee, which is difficult to get for the ascetics also.
कच्चिद् बुध: स्वस्त्यनमीव आस्ते श्वफल्कपुत्रो भगवत्प्रपन्न: ।
य: कृष्णपादाङ्कितमार्गपांसुष्वचेष्टत प्रेमविभिन्नधैर्य: ॥३२॥
कच्चिद् बुध:
is it that the wise (Akroora)
स्वस्ति-अनमीव: आस्ते
well and healthy remains
श्वफल्क-पुत्र:
the son of Shvaphalka
भगवत्--प्रपन्न:
to the Lord devoted
य: कृष्ण-पाद-
who (in) Krishna's feet
अङ्कित-मार्ग-
prints marked path's
पांसुषु-अवचेष्टत
sand rolled
प्रेम-विभिन्न-धैर्य:
overcome with love and losing his calm
Is the son of Shvaphalka, Akrura happy and healthy, who is a devotee of the Lord, and who rolled in the sand of the path which was marked by Krishna's foot prints, being overcome with love and losing all calmness.
कच्चिच्छिवं देवकभोजपुत्र्या विष्णुप्रजाया इव देवमातु: ।
या वै स्वगर्भेण दधार देवं त्रयी यथा यज्ञवितानमर्थम् ॥३३॥
कच्चित्-शिवम् देवक-
is it (that) all is well (for) Devaka,
भोज-पुत्र्या:
(the chief of) the Bhojas's daughter (Devaki)
विष्णु-प्रजाया:
to Vishnu (who) gave birth
इव देव-मातु:
like the gods' mother (Aditi)
या वै स्व-गर्भेण
who indeed in her womb
दधार देवम् त्रयी यथा
held The Lord, the Vedas just as
यज्ञ-वितानम्-अर्थम्
the sacrifices and their extensive rituals
Is all well with Devaki, the daughter of the chief of the Bhojas, Devaka. It was she who carried the Lord in her own womb, like the good mother of the gods, Aditi, who had given birth to Lord Vishnu, and also like the Vedas who hold the extensive sacrifices and their rituals within them.
अपिस्विदास्ते भगवान् सुखं वो य: सात्वतां कामदुधोऽनिरुद्ध: ।
यमामनन्ति स्म ह शब्दयोनिं मनोमयं सत्त्वतुरीयतत्त्वम् ॥३४॥
अपि-स्वित्-आस्ते
is in comfort is present
भगवान् सुखम्
The Lord in happiness
व: य: सात्वताम्
of ours, Who, for the devotees
काम-दुध:-अनिरुद्ध:
is wish fulfilling, Aniruddha
यम्-आमनन्ति स्म
whom, declare do
ह शब्द-योनिम्
indeed of the Vedas' source
मनोमयम्
(who is the deity of) the mind
सत्त्व-तुरीय-तत्त्वम्
of the Sattva beyond essence
Our Lord Aniruddha, who is the wish granter of the devotees, is it that he is happy? He is declared as the source of the Vedas, the diety of the mind, Manas, and is of the essence which is beyond even of the Sattva Guna.
अपिस्विदन्ये च निजात्मदैवमनन्यवृत्या समनुव्रता ये ।
हृदीकसत्यात्मजचारुदेष्णगदादय: स्वस्ति चरन्ति सौम्य॥३५॥
अपि-स्वित्-अन्ये च
also it is so (that) others and
निज-आत्म-दैवम्-
(to) their own Lord
अनन्य-वृत्या समनुव्रता ये
unfailingly devoted, followers who
हृदीक सत्य-आत्मज
(such as) Hrideeka Satybhaama's son
चारुदेष्ण गद-आदय:
Chaarodeshna, Gada and others
स्वस्ति चरन्ति सौम्य
well living, O Gentle One!
O Gentle One! Is it that Hrideeka, Satyabhaama's son, Charudeshana, Gada and others who are devoted to their own Lord and also are His followers, are living happily?
अपि स्वदोर्भ्यां विजयाच्युताभ्यां धर्मेण धर्म: परिपाति सेतुम् ।
दुर्योधनोऽतप्यत यत्सभायां साम्राज्यलक्ष्म्या विजयानुवृत्त्या ॥३६॥
अपि स्व-दोर्भ्याम्
is it, by his two arms
विजय-अच्युताभ्याम्
Arjuna and Krishna
धर्मेण धर्म:
righteously, virtue personified (Yudhishtthira)
परिपाति सेतुम्
protects the bridge (of law)
दुर्योधन:-अतप्यत
Duryodhana was jealous
यत्-सभायाम्
in which assembly
साम्राज्य-लक्ष्म्या
of imperial fortune
विजय-अनुवृत्त्या
and glory attending
Is it that the virtue personified Yudhishthira, by his both arms, Arjuna and Sri Krishna, rightiously protects the bridge of law. In whose assembly court, Duryodhana saw the imperial fortune and the attending glory, and burnt with jealousy.
किं वा कृताघेश्वघमत्यमर्षी भीमोऽहिवद्दीर्घतमं व्यमुञ्चत् ।
यस्याङ्घ्रिपातं रणभूर्न सेहे मार्गं गदायाश्चरतो विचित्रम् ॥३७॥
किम् वा कृत्-अघेषु-
is it or, (towards) those who have wronged,
अघम्-अति-अमर्षी
angry and very unforgiving
भीम:-अहि-वत्-
Bheema like a snake
दीर्घतमम् व्यमुञ्चत्
the long drawn has given up
यस्य-अङ्घ्रि-पातम्
whose foot steps
रण-भू:-न सेहे
battle field did not bear
मार्गम् गदाया:
in the way by (his) mace
चरत: विचित्रम्
revolved strangely
Is it that the angry and unforgiving Bheem who is like a snake towards those who have wronged him, has given up his long drawn grudges? Bheema's foot steps, even the battle field could not bear as he tread, wielding his mace in strange manners.
कच्चिद्यशोधा रथयूथपानां गाण्डीवधन्वोपरतारिरास्ते ।
अलक्षितो यच्छरकूटगूढो मायाकिरातो गिरिशस्तुतोष ॥३८॥
कच्चित्-यशोधा:
is it the renowned
रथ-यूथपानाम्
of the charioteers
गाण्डीव-धन्व:
the Gaandeeva wielder
उपरत-अरि:-आस्ते
having subdued the enemies is living
अलक्षित: यत्-शर-कूट-गूढ:
unseen, who (was) by arrows net intense
माया-किरात:
by the illusory Kiraata
गिरिश:-तुतोष
Lord Shiva was pleased
Is it that the renowned of the charioteers, the Gaandeeva bearer Arjuna lives happily having subdued his enemies, who had won the pleasure of Lord Shiva disguised as a Kiraata, rendering him invisible with an intense net of his arrows.
यमावुतस्वित्तनयौ पृथाया: पार्थैर्वृतौ पक्ष्मभिरक्षिणीव ।
रेमात उद्दाय मृधे स्वरिक्थं परात्सुपर्णाविव वज्रिवक्त्रात् ॥३९॥
यमौ-उत-स्वित्-तनयौ
the twins indeed is it the sons
पृथाया: पार्थै:-वृतौ
of Prithaa (Kunti), by sons protection
पक्ष्मभि:-अक्षिणी-इव
by the lashes the eyes like
रेमाते उद्दाय मृधे
rejoice, taking over in war
स्व-रिक्थम्
their own share (of kingdom)
परात्-सुपर्णौ-इव
from others, Gaduda like
वज्रि-वक्त्रात्
Indra's mouth (nectar)
Kunti's foster sons, the twins, who were protected by Kunti's sons, just like the eyes are protected by the eyelashes, Nakul and Sahadeva, are they rejoicing, having snatched their own share of kingdom from others, just as the two Gadudas snatched the nectar from Indra's mouth.
अहो पृथापि ध्रियतेऽर्भकार्थे राजर्षिवर्येण विनापि तेन ।
यस्त्वेकवीरोऽधिरथो विजिग्ये धनुर्द्वितीय: ककुभश्चतस्र: ॥४०॥
अहो पृथा-अपि
Oh! Prithaa also
ध्रियते-अर्भक-अर्थे
is living for children's' sake
राजर्षि-वर्येण
by the royal sage foremost
विना-अपि तेन
bereaved by him (Paandu)
य:-तु-एकवीर:-
who indeed (was) a hero
अधिरथ: विजिग्ये
and charioteer had won
धनु:-द्वितीय:
by bow alone
ककुभ:-चतस्र:
the directions, four
Oh! Pritha, bereaved of Paandu, the foremost of the royal sages, who was a hero and a charioteer and had won the four directions by his bow alone, lives just for the sake of her children.
सौम्यानुशोचे तमध:पतन्तं भ्रात्रे परेताय विदुद्रुहे य: ।
निर्यापितो येन सुहृत्स्वपुर्या अहं स्वपुत्रान् समनुव्रतेन ॥४१॥
सौम्य-अनुशोचे
O Gentle One! I grieve
तम्-अध:-पतन्तम्
him going a downfall (Dhritaraashtra)
भ्रात्रे परेताय
(towards) the brother deceased (Paandu)
विदुद्रुहे य: निर्यापित: येन
wronged who, banished by whom
सुहृत्-स्व-पुर्या: अहम्
the well wisher, from his capital, I
स्व-पुत्रान् समनुव्रतेन
his own sons following
O Gentle Uddhava! I feel sorry for the down fall of Dhritaraashtra, who wronged his deceased brother, and banished me, the well-wisher from his capital entirely following the wrong advice of his own sons.
सोऽहं हरेर्मर्त्यविडम्बनेन दृशो नृणां चालयतो विधातु: ।
नान्योपलक्ष्य: पदवीं प्रसादाच्चरामि पश्यन् गतविस्मयोऽत्र ॥४२॥
स:-अहम् हरे:-
that I, of Shree Hari,
मर्त्य-विडम्बनेन
of the mortals' bewildered
दृश: नृणाम् चालयत:
mind of the people motivates
विधातु:
of the world's creator, not by any one seen
पदवीम् प्रसादात्-
(His) glory, by (His) grace
चरामि पश्यन्
roam about seeing
गत-विस्मय:-अत्र
bereft of all surprises, here
That me, here I am, who is roaming about unseen by others, without being surprised, seeing His glory, by His grace. The world's creator, He motivates the minds of the mortals and bewilders the minds of people.
नूनं नृपाणां त्रिमदोत्पथानां महीं मुहुश्चालयतां चमूभि: ।
वधात्प्रपन्नार्तिजिहीर्षयेशोऽप्युपैक्षताघं भगवान् कुरूणाम् ॥४३॥
नूनम् नृपाणाम्
surely, of the kings
त्रि-मद-उत्पथानाम्
threefold pride creating
महीम् मुहु:-
the earth again and again
चालयताम् चमूभि:
shaking by the armies
वधात्-प्रपन्न-आर्ति
by killing, shelter seeking (devotee's) troubles
जिहीर्षया-ईश:-अपि-
wanting to destroy
उपैक्षत-अघम्
the Lord also overlooked the sins
भगवान् कुरूणाम्
Lord Krishna, of the Kauravaas
Surely, the Lord wanted to kill the kings who with their threefold pride, time and again shook the earth with their armies. And also to end the troubles of His shelter seeking devotees, Lord Krishna overlooked the sins of the Kauravas for the time being.
अजस्य जन्मोत्पथनाशनाय कर्माण्यकर्तुर्ग्रहणाय पुंसाम् ।
नन्वन्यथा कोऽर्हति देहयोगं परो गुणानामुत कर्मतन्त्रम् ॥४४॥
अजस्य जन्म-
of the birth less, (Lord) birth
उत्पथ-नाशनाय
(is for) the wrong doers extermination
कर्माणि-अकर्तु:-
the actions of the actionless (Lord)
ग्रहणाय पुंसाम्
to attract the people
ननु-अन्यथा क:-अर्हति
surely otherwise, who wants
देह-योगम् पर: गुणानाम-
body association, beyond the three gunas
उत कर्म-तन्त्रम्
or the course of action
The birth of the birthless Lord is for the extermination of the wrong doers and His actions are to attract the people towards Him. Surely otherwise, the actionless Lord who is beyond the three Gunas, why will He like to take on the bondage of the body or to pursue the course of action?
तस्य प्रपन्नाखिललोकपानामवस्थितानामनुशासने स्वे ।
अर्थाय जातस्य यदुष्वजस्य वार्तां सखे कीर्तय तीर्थकीर्ते: ॥४५॥
तस्य प्रपन्न-अखिल-
His (to whom) are surrendered all
लोकपानाम्-अवस्थितानाम्-
the guardians of the spheres present (always)
अनुशासने स्वे
in obedience His own
अर्थाय जातस्य
for them, born
यदुषु-अजस्य वार्ताम्
in the Yadu's, The birth less One, the news
सखे कीर्तय तीर्थकीर्ते:
O Friend! Do relate, of The sacred renowned
To whom the gaurdians of all the spheres surrender, to Whom all the devotees are present in obedience, for Whom the Birthless One has taken birth among the Yadus, O Friend! Do relate His news, Who is of sacred renown.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारहंस्यां संहितायां तृतीयस्कन्धे विदुरोद्धवसंवादे प्रथम: अध्याय: ॥१॥
Thus ends the first discourse in Book Three, consisting of a dialogue between Vidura and Uddhava, of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
