कपिल उवाच -
Kapila said -
तस्यैतस्य जनो नूनं नायं वेदोरुविक्रमम् ।
काल्यमानोऽपि बलिनो वायोरिव घनावलि: ॥१॥
तस्य-एतस्य
that this (Time's)
जन: नूनम् न-अयम्
a person, indeed, not this
वेद-उरु-विक्रमम्
know great power
काल्यमान:-अपि
blown about though
बलिन: वायो:-
by the powerful wind
इव घन-आवलि:
like clouds' mass
Just as, the mass of clouds blown here and there by the powerful force of the wind, does not know it to be so, this person, though driven from this birth to that, by that this powerful Time, does not know it to be so.
यं यमर्थमुपादत्ते दु:खेन सुखहेतवे ।
तं तं धुनोति भगवान् पुमाञ्छोचति यत्कृते ॥२॥
यम् यम्-अर्थम्-उपादत्ते
that material that collects
दु:खेन सुख-हेतवे
with pain, for happiness
तम् तम् धुनोति भगवान्
all that, destroys The Lord (Time)
पुमान्-शोचति यत्-कृते
man grieves because of which
Man collects those materials which he thinks are for his happiness, with great pains. All those are destroyed by The Lord Time, and because of which man grieves.
यदध्रुवस्य देहस्य सानुबन्धस्य दुर्मति:।
ध्रुवाणि मन्यते मोहाद् गृहक्षेत्रवसूनि च ॥३॥
यत्-अध्रुवस्य देहस्य
because, the non-lasting body
सानुबन्धस्य दुर्मति:
the relatives, the stupid (person)
ध्रुवाणि मन्यते मोहात्
everlasting, understands by attachment
गृह-क्षेत्र-वसूनि च
house, land wealth etc.,
Because of attachment a stupid person regards the non-lasting body, relatives, house land and wealth as everlasting.
जन्तुर्वै भव एतस्मिन् यां यां योनिमनुव्रजेत् ।
तस्यां तस्यां स लभते निर्वृतिम् न विरज्यते ॥४॥
जन्तु:-वै भव एतस्मिन्
the Jeeva (being) indeed, in world this
याम् याम् योनिम्-अनुव्रजेत्
in which all species follows
तस्याम् तस्याम् स: लभते
in all those, he attains
निर्वृतिम् न विरज्यते
happiness, does not give up
In this world, the jeeva, in those species where he is born, in all those he attains is happiness and so he does not feel any aversion.
नरकस्थोऽपि देहं वै न पुमांस्त्यक्तुमिच्छति ।
नारक्यां निर्वृतौ सत्यां देवमायाविमोहित: ॥५॥
नरकस्थ:-अपि
in hell residing also
देहम् वै न पुमान्-
body indeed does not a person
त्यक्तुम्-इच्छति
to shed wants
नारक्याम् निर्वृतौ सत्याम्
in the infernal, enjoyment happy
देव-माया विमोहित:
by Lord's delusion deluded
Deluded by The Lord's delusionary Maayaa, a person does not want to shed his body even in hell, and is happy in the infernal enjoyments.
आत्मजायासुतागारपशुद्रविणबन्धुषु ।
निरूढमूलहृदय आत्मानं बहु मन्यते ॥६॥
आत्म-जाया-सुत-आगार-
in self, wife, son, house,
पशु-द्रविण-बन्धुषु
cattle, wealth and relatives
निरूढ-मूल-हृदय:-
attached to the core of the heart
आत्मानम् बहु मन्यते
himself greatly blessed
Attached to the core of his heart to his own body, wife, children, house, cattle, wealth and relatives, he thinks himself to be greatly blessed.
सन्दह्यमानसर्वाङ्ग एषामुद्वहनाधिना ।
करोत्यविरतं मूढो दुरितानि दुराशय: ॥७॥
सन्दह्यमान-सर्व-अङ्ग
burning, all over the body
एषाम्-उद्वहन-आधिना
for their maintenance worried
करोति-अविरतम् मूढ:
does incessantly foolish (person)
दुरितानि दुराशय:
misdeeds evil-minded
The evil-minded foolish person burns all over the body with the enxiety of their maintenance, and incessently performs all sorts of misdeeds.
आक्षिप्तात्मेन्द्रिय: स्त्रीणामसतीनां च मायया ।
रहोरचितयाऽऽलापै: शिशूनां कलभाषिणाम् ॥८॥
आक्षिप्त-आत्म-इन्द्रिय:
thrown own senses
स्त्रीणाम्-असतीनाम्
(to the) women immoral
च मायया
and by (their) Maayaa (charm)
रह:-रचितया-
everyday wrought
आलापै: शिशूनाम्
by talks of children
कल-भाषिणाम्
sweet speaking
He throws asunder his senses to the deludery charms of the immoral women wrought by them everyday, and by the sweet talks of the children,…
गृहेषु कूटधर्मेषु दु:खतन्त्रेष्वतन्द्रित: ।
कुर्वन्दु:खप्रतीकारं सुखवन्मन्यते गृही ॥९॥
गृहेषु कूट-धर्मेषु
in the house, in wileful duties
दु:ख-तन्त्रेषु-अतन्द्रित:
sorrow causing, with effort
कुर्वन्-दु:ख-प्रतीकारम्
doing calamity averting
सुख-वत्-मन्यते गृही
happy like deems, the householder
The householder with effort keeps on performing wileful sorrowful duties, and when he is able to avert a calamity, he deems himself to be happy.
अर्थैरापादितैर्गुर्व्या हिंसयेतस्ततश्च तान् ।
पुष्णाति येषां पोषेण शेषभुग्यात्यध: स्वयम् ॥१०॥
अर्थै:-आपादितै:-गुर्व्या हिंसया-
by wealth collected by great violence
इत:-तत:-च तान्
from here and there and them
पुष्णाति येषाम् पोषेण
nourishes, by whose nourishing
शेष-भुक्-याति-अध: स्वयम्
left-over's eating, goes down to perdition himself
By procuring wealth by great violence from here and there, he nourishes them and goes down to perdition himself, and eats their left-overs .
वार्तायां लुप्यमानायामारब्धायां पुन: पुन: ।
लोभाभिभूतो नि:सत्त्व: परार्थे कुरुते स्पृहाम् ॥११॥
वार्तायाम् लुप्यमानायाम्-
in business, unyielding
आरब्धायाम् पुन: पुन:
starting again and again
लोभ-अभिभूत: नि:सत्त्व:
by greed overtaken, impatient
पर-अर्थे कुरुते स्पृहाम्
in others wealth does longing
In business, which is unyielding, trying to establish it again and again, he is overcome by greed, and impatiently longs for others wealth.
कुटुम्बभरणाकल्पो मन्दभाग्यो वृथोद्यम: ।
श्रिया विहीन: कृपणो ध्यायञ्छ्वसिति मूढधी: ॥१२॥
कुटुम्ब-भरण-अकल्प:
family to feed unable
मन्द-भाग्य: वृथा-उद्यम:
unlucky meaningless effort (one of)
श्रिया विहीन: कृपण:
of good looks devoid, wretched
ध्यायन्-श्वसिति मूढ-धी:
in anxiety sighs, non-plussed minded
Becoming unlucky, his efforts become meaningless, and he is no longer able to support his family. He, the wretched looks pitiable and mentally non-plussed keeps sighing deeply in anxiety.
एवं स्वभरणाकल्पं तत्कलत्रादयस्तथा ।
नाद्रियन्ते यथापूर्वं कीनाश इव गोजरम् ॥१३॥
एवम् स्व-भरण-अकल्पम्
thus self in supporting, unable,
तत्-कलत्र-आदय:-तथा
his wife and others
न-आद्रियन्ते यथा-पूर्वम्
do not respect like before
कीनाश इव गो-जरम्
the cultivator like oxen old
When he is unable to support himself, his wife and others do not respect him with the same respect. Just like the miserly cultivator does not respect his old and worn out oxen.
तत्राप्यजातनिर्वेदो भ्रियमाण: स्वयम्भृतै: ।
जरयोपात्तवैरूप्यो मरणाभिमुखो गृहे ॥१४॥
तत्र-अपि-अजात-निर्वेद:
there also, not getting dispassion
भ्रियमाण: स्वयम्-भृतै:
supporting whom, himself (by those) servants
जरया-उपात्त-वैरूप्य:
by old-age deformed
मरण-अभिमुख: गृहे
death awaiting in the house
Then also, he is not dispassioned, in spite of himself being supported by the servants, whom he had nourished. Deformed by old age he awaits death in his own house.
आस्तेऽवमत्योपन्यस्तं गृहपाल इवाहरन् ।
आमयाव्यप्रदीप्ताग्निरल्पाहारोऽल्पचेष्टित: ॥१५॥
आस्ते-अवमत्या-उपन्यस्तम्
remains with disrespect gathering,
गृहपाल: इव-आहरन्
dog like eating
आमयावी-अप्रदीप्त-अग्नि:-
diseased, of dimmed appetite
अल्प-आहार: अल्प-चेष्टित:
small eater and small worker
He remains in the house, eats bits of food like given to a dog, is diseased, and with a weak digestion, eat small ammounts, works very less.
वायुनोत्क्रमतोत्तार: कफसंरुद्धनाडिक: ।
कासश्वाशकृतायास: कण्ठे घुरघुरायते ॥१६॥
वायुना-उत्क्रमता-उत्तार:
by wind shot out (are) eyeballs
कफ-संरुद्ध-नाडिक:
by phlegm are choked the pipe
कास-श्वाश-कृत-आयास:
by cough breathing is done with effort
कण्ठे घुर-घुरायते
in throat gurgling starts
In the face of death, his eyeballs shoot out because of the constriction of the wind. The wind pipe is choked by phlegm. Breathing becomes very difficult due to caugh, and there is a gurguling sound in the throat.
शयान: परिशोचद्भि: परिवीत: स्वबन्धुभि: ।
वाच्यमानोऽपि न ब्रूते कालपाशवशं गत: ॥१७॥
शयान: परिशोचद्भि: परिवीत:
sleeping, by the sorrowing surrounded
स्व-बन्धुभि: वाच्यमान:-
by own relatives being called,
अपि न ब्रूते
too, does not reply
काल-पाश-वशम् गत:
by death snare, caught into
Sleeping in his bed, surrounded by sorrowing relative, he is unable to reply even when called, being caught in the snares of death.
एवं कुटुम्बभरणे व्यापृतात्माजितेन्द्रिय: ।
म्रियते रुदतां स्वानामुरुवेदनयास्तधी: ॥१८॥
एवम् कुटुम्ब-भरणे
in this manner, in supporting the family
व्यापृत-आत्मा-
engrossed minded
अजितेन्द्रिय:
not conquering the senses
म्रियते रुदताम् स्वानाम्-
dies (among) weeping relatives
उरु-वेदनया-अस्त-धी:
by great agony rendered unconscious
In this manner, always engrossed in supporting his family, having not subdued his senses, among his grieving relatives, in great agony, rendered unconscious, he dies.
यमदूतौ तदा प्राप्तौ भीमौ सरभसेक्षणौ ।
स दृष्ट्वा त्रस्तहृदय: शकृन्मूत्रं विमुञ्चति ॥१९॥
यम-दूतौ तदा प्राप्तौ
Death's two messengers, then, having arrived
भीमौ सरभस-ईक्षणौ
ferocious, then, having arrived
स: दृष्ट्वा त्रस्त-हृदय:
he seeing, trembling at heart
शकृत्-मूत्रम् विमुञ्चति
stool and urine passes
Then, seeing two ferocious messangers of Death, with eyes red with wrath, having arrived, with a heart trembling with fear, he passes stool and urine.
यातनादेह आवृत्य पाशैर्बद्ध्वा गले बलात् ।
नयतो दीर्घमध्वानं दण्ड्यं राजभटा यथा ॥२०॥
यातना-देहे आवृत्य
in suffering body covering
पाशै:-बद्ध्वा गले बलात्
by nooses tying in the neck forcefully
नयत: दीर्घम्-अध्वानम्
drag (him) on a long road
दण्ड्म् राजभटा: यथा
a convict by king's constables just like
He is then covered in a body which is meant for torturing, and is tied in the neck with nooses and is forcefully draged on to a long road leading to hell, just as a knig's constables drag a convict to the jail.
तयोर्निर्भिन्नहृदयस्तर्जनैर्जातवेपथु: ।
पथि श्वभिर्भक्ष्यमाण आर्तोऽघं स्वमनुस्मरन् ॥२१॥
तयो:-निर्भिन्न-हृदय:-
by them tormented at heart
तर्जनै:-जात-वेपथु:
being shouted at and trembling
पथि श्वभि:-भक्ष्यमाण:
on the way, by dogs being bitten
आर्त:-अघम् स्वम्-अनुस्मरन्
suffering, sins own remembering
Being shouted at by the messangers, tormented at heart and trembling , being bitten on the way by dogs, with great suffering, he remembers his own sins.
क्षुत्तृट्परीतोऽर्कदवानलानिलै: सन्तप्यमान: पथि तप्तबालुके ।
कृच्छ्रेण पृष्ठे कशया च ताडितश्चलत्यशक्तोऽपि निराश्रमोदके ॥२२॥
क्षुत्-तृट्-परीत:-
by hunger thirst overcome
अर्क-दवानल-अनिलै:
by sun shine, forest fire and fire
सन्तप्यमान:
oppressed
पथि तप्त-बालुके
on the way on hot sand
कृच्छ्रेण पृष्ठे
barely, on the back
कशया च ताडित:-
by whips and hit
चलति-अशक्त:-अपि
walks unable even
निराश्रम-उदके
without respite and water
He is overcome by hunger and thirst and is oppressed by the heat of the sunshine, forest fire and fire, and is barely able to walk on the way of heated sand, is hit on the back by whips, goes on without respite and water.
तत्र तत्र पतञ्छ्रान्तो मूर्च्छित: पुनरुत्थित: ।
पथा पापीयसा नीतस्तरसा यमसादनम् ॥२३॥
तत्र तत्र पतन्-
here there falling
श्रान्त: मूर्च्छित:
exhausted and fainting
पुन:-उत्थित:
again rising up
पथा पापीयसा नीत:-
by the road treacherous, is dragged
तरसा यम-सादनम्
in haste to Death's house
He keeps fainting and falling here and there due to exhausion and rises again and again as he is hastily dragged along the trecherous path towards the abode of Death.
योजनानां सहस्राणि नवतिं नव चाध्वन: ।
त्रिभिर्मुहूर्तैर्द्वाभ्यां वा नीत: प्राप्नोति यातना: ॥२४॥
योजनानाम् सहस्राणि
Yojana thousand (miles)
नवतिम् नव च-अध्वन:
ninety-nine (7,92,000), and along (this) road
त्रिभि:-मुहूर्तै:-द्वाभ्याम् वा
in three hours or two
नीत: प्राप्नोति यातना:
dragged, undergoes the tortures
He is dragged along this road which is ninty nine thousand Yojanas (7,92,000 miles) long, within two to three hours, where he undergoes the tortures.
आदीपनं स्वगात्राणां वेष्टयित्वोल्मुकादिभि: ।
आत्ममांसादनं क्वापि स्वकृत्तं परतोऽपि वा ॥२५॥
आदीपनम् स्व-गात्राणाम्
burning of his own body
वेष्टयित्वा-उल्मुक-आदिभि:
engulfed by fire torches
आत्म-मांस-अदनम् क्वापि
own flesh eating may be
स्व-कृत्तम् परत:-अपि वा
self cut, or even (cut) by others
He burns his own body being flung among enflamed torches, and eats his own flesh, cut by himself or at times cut by others.
जीवतश्चान्त्राभ्युद्धार: श्वगृध्रैर्यमसादने ।
सर्पवृश्चिकदंशाद्यैर्दशद्भिश्चात्मवैशसम् ॥२६॥
जीवत:-च-अन्त्र-अभ्युद्धार:
while alive, and intestines are pulled out
श्व-गृध्रै:-यम-सादने
by dogs and vultures, in the hell house
सर्प-वृश्चिक-दंश-आद्यै:-
snakes and scorpions stings etc.,
अशद्भि:-च-आत्म-वैशसम्
bites and he is tormented
In the house of hell, his insides, intestines are pulled out by dogs and vultures while still alive. He is tormented by the stings and bites of snakes and scorpions.
कृन्तनं चावयवशो गजादिभ्यो भिदापनम् ।
पातनं गिरिशृङ्गेभ्यो रोधनं चाम्बुगर्तयो: ॥२७॥
कृन्तनम् च-अवयवश:
is chopped and limb by limb
गज-आदिभ्य: भिदापनम्
by elephants and others, is rent asunder
पातनम् गिरि-शृङ्गेभ्य:
is hurled from mountain peaks
रोधनम् च-अम्बु-गर्तयो:
is enclosed and in water or pit
His limbs are chopped one by one and is rent asunder by the elephants and other animals. He is hurled from mountain peaks, and is enclosed in water or dug out pits.
यास्तामिस्रान्धतामिस्रा रौरवाद्याश्च यातना:।
भुङ्क्ते नरो वा नारी वा मिथ: सङ्गेन निर्मिता: ॥२८॥
या:-तामिस्र-अन्धतामिस्रा:
those (tortures) (classified as)Taamisra, Andha-taamisra
रौरव-आद्या:-च यातना:
Raurava, etc., and tortures
भुङ्क्ते नर: वा नारी वा
suffer men or women or
मिथ: सङ्गेन निर्मिता:
mutually together generated
Men or women suffer the tortures of the hell, classified as Taamisra, Andhataamisra, and Raurava, generated by their sinful coming togather.
अत्रैव नरक: स्वर्ग इति मात: प्रचक्ष्ते ।
या यातना वै नारक्यस्ता इहाप्युपलक्षिता: ॥२९॥
अत्र-एव नरक: स्वर्ग:
here itself is hell, heaven
इति मात: प्रचक्षते
thus, O Mother! Is said
या: यातना: वै नारक्य:-
those tortures, indeed, hell-like,
ता: इह-अपि-उपलक्षिता:
they, here also are seen
O Mother! It is said that hell and heaven are both here only. Because the hell-like tortures are to be seen here also, indeed.
एवं कुटुम्बं बिभ्राण उदरम्भर एव वा ।
विसृज्येहोभयं प्रेत्य भुङ्क्ते तत्फलमीदृशम् ॥३०॥
एवम् कुटुम्बम् बिभ्राण:
in this manner, family supporting
उदरम्भर: एव वा
(his) stomach filling only or
विसृज्य-इह-उभयम्
leaving back here both
प्रेत्य भुङ्क्ते
departing earns
तत्-फलम्-ईदृशम्
that fruit of this sort
In this manner, by just supporting his family or nourishing his own body, he departs leaving both them, here, and reaps this type of fruits only.
एक: प्रपद्यते ध्वान्तं हित्वेदं स्वकलेवरम् ।
कुशलेतरपाथेयो भूतद्रोहेण यत् भृतम् ॥३१॥
एक: प्रपद्यते ध्वान्तम्
all alone, reaches the hell
हित्वा-इदम् स्व-कलेवरम्
giving up this, his body
कुशल-इतर-पाथेय:
good others (bad), coming along
भूत-द्रोहेण यत् भृतम्
by other's animosity, which is gained
Giving up this body of his, he reaches the hell all alone, the results of bad deeds, like having enimosity with others, carrying along.
दैवेनासादितं तस्य शमलं निरये पुमान् ।
भुङ्क्ते कुटुम्बपोषस्य हृतवित्त इवातुर: ॥३२॥
दैवेन-आसादितम्
by Providence inflicted
तस्य शमलम्
of that sin's result
निरये पुमान् भुङ्क्ते
in hell man experiences
कुटुम्ब-पोषस्य
of family supporting
हृत-वित्त इव-आतुर:
having lost wealth like anxious
Inflicted by Providence, man experiences the result of the sin of supporting his family in hell, distressed as a man having lost all his wealth.
केवलेन ह्यधर्मेण कुटुम्बभरणोत्सुक: ।
याति जीवोऽन्धतामिस्रं चरमं तमस: पदम् ॥३३॥
केवलेन हि-अधर्मेण
only by just un-righteously
कुटुम्ब-भरण-उत्सुक:
to family support anxious
याति जीव:-
goes the Jeeva
अन्धतामिस्रम्
to Andha-taamisra
चरमम् तमस: पदम्
the highest of dark regions
The jeeva, anxious to support his family even by unrighteous means, goes to the hell named Andhataamisra, the darkest regions of hell.
अधस्तान्नरलोकस्य यावतीर्यातनादय: ।
क्रमश: समनुक्रम्य पुनरत्राव्रजेच्छुचि: ॥३४॥
अधस्तात्-नर-लोकस्य
from the lowest of human birth,
यावती:-यातना-आदय:
all those tortures and all
क्रमश: समनुक्रम्य
cosequitively going through
पुन:-अत्र-आव्रजेत्-शुचि:
again here returns purified
Having consiqutively, gone through all the lowest forms of tortures of human birth, he comes back here, purified.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां तृतीयस्कन्धे कापिलेयोपाख्याने कर्मविपाको नाम त्रिंश: अध्याय: समाप्त: ॥३०॥
Thus ends the thirtieth discourse entitled 'the fruit of actions pursuing those who commit them through subsequent existence', forming part of the 'Story of Lord Kapila', in Book Three of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
