मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
ध्रुवं निवृत्तं प्रतिबुद्ध्य वैशसादपेतमन्युं भगवान् धनेश्वर: ।

तत्रागतश्चारणयक्षकिन्नरै: संस्तूयमानोऽभ्यवदत्कृताञ्जलिम् ॥१॥


ध्रुवम् निवृत्तम्
Dhruva refrained
प्रतिबुद्ध्य वैशसात्-
knowing from killing
अपेत-मन्युम् भगवान्
devoid of anger, Lord
धनेश्वर: तत्र-आगत:-
Kuber there came
चारण-यक्ष-किन्नरै:
by Chaaranas, Yakshas and Kinnaras
संस्तूयमान:-अभ्यवदत्-
being glorified, said
कृत-अञ्जलिम्
with folded hands

Lord Kubera, knowing that Dhruva had refrained from killing and was devoid of anger, came there, being glorified by the Chaaranas, Yakshas and Kinneras and said to Dhruva, who had folded his hands.


धनद उवाच -
Kuber said -
भो भो: क्षत्रियदायाद परितुष्टोऽस्मि तेऽनघ ।

यस्त्वं पितामहादेशाद्वैरं दुस्त्यजमत्यज: ॥२॥


भो भो: क्षत्रिय-दायाद
O1 Oh! Kshatriya Prince
परितुष्ट:-अस्मि ते-
satisfied am I with you
अनघ य:-त्वम्
Sinless One! that you
पितामह-आदेशात्-
on grandfather's advice
वैरम् दुस्त्यजम्-अत्यज:
animosity, difficult to give up, gave up

O! Oh! Kshatriya Prince! O Sinless One! I am satisfied with you, in that on your grand father's advice, you have renounced animosity which is difficult to give up.


न भवानवधीद्यक्षान्न यक्षा भ्रातरं तव ।

काल एव हि भूतानां प्रभुरप्ययभावयो: ॥३॥


न भवान्-अवधीत्-यक्षान्-
not you killed the Yakshas,
न यक्षा: भ्रातरम् तव
not the Yakshas, brother your
काल: एव हि भूतानाम्
Time only certainly, of beings
प्रभु:-अप्यय-भावयो:
is capable of death and birth

You did not kill the Yakshas, neither did the Yakshas kill your brother. Time alone cetainly is capable of giving death and birth to the beings.


अहं त्वमित्यपार्था धीरज्ञानात्पुरुषस्य हि ।

स्वाप्नीवाभात्यतद्ध्यानाद्यया बन्धविपर्ययौ ॥४॥


अहम् त्वम्-इति-अपार्था धी:-
'me' 'you' this false notion
अज्ञानात्-पुरुषस्य हि
from ignorance of a person indeed
स्वाप्नी-इव-आभाति-
in a dream like appears
अतत्-ध्यानात्-
not that (the body) thinking on
यया बन्ध-विपर्ययौ
by which bondage and misery

As in a dream it appears to be true, a person has the false notion of 'me' and 'you', due to ignorance, and by thinking on that false identification to the body, there is bondage and misery.


तद्गच्छ ध्रुव भद्रं ते भगवन्तमधोक्षजम् ।

सर्वभूतात्मभावेन सर्वभूतात्मविग्रहम् ॥५॥


तत्-गच्छ ध्रुव भद्रम् ते
therefore, go Dhruva! blessed be you
भगवन्तम्-अधोक्षजम्
to The Lord, Who is above sense-perception
सर्व-भूतात्म-भावेन
in all beings with the self feeling
सर्व-भूतात्म-विग्रहम्
The all beings manifestation

Therefore, O Dhruva! Blessed be you! with the feeling of the self in all beings, Go and (worship) The Lord, Who is above all sense-perceptions, and is The manifestation of all beings….


भजस्व भजनीयाङ्घ्रिमभवाय भवच्छिदम् ।

युक्तं विरहितं शक्त्या गुणमय्याऽऽत्ममायया ॥६॥


भजस्व भजनीय-अङ्घ्रिम्-
worship (Him) Whose feet are worthy of worship
अभवाय भवच्छिदम्
for end of birth and death, cutter of worldly bondage
युक्तम् विरहितम् शक्त्या
(Who is)inclusive and devoid of energy
गुणमय्या-आत्म-मायया
consisting of the Gunas, His own Maayaa

Worship His feet which are worthy of worship and which put an end to birth and death, and also cuts the worldly bondage. He is inclusive of and devoid of His own energy Maayaa, consisting of the three Gunas.


वृणीहि कामं नृप यन्मनोगतं मत्तस्त्वमौत्तानपदेऽविशङ्कित: ।

वरं वरार्होऽम्बुजनाभपादयोरनन्तरं त्वां वयमङ्ग शुश्रुम ॥७॥


वृणीहि कामम् नृप
ask for desired O King!
यत्-मनोगतम् मत्त:-
that dear to heart from me
त्वम्-औत्तानपदे-अविशङ्कित:
you, O Son of Uttaanapaada, unhesitatingly
वरम् वरार्ह:-
boon really worthy of
अम्बुज-नाभ-पादयो:-
of The lotus navel's feet
अनन्तरम् त्वाम्
very close you
वयम्-अङ्ग शुश्रुम
we O Dear! Have heard

O King! Unhesitatingly, from me, do ask for the boon which is close to your heart, as you are really worthy of it, and because we have heard that you are very close to the feet of The Lord with the lotus in His navel.


मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
स राजराजेन वराय चोदितो ध्रुवो महाभागवतो महामति: ।

हरौ स वव्रेऽचलितां स्मृतिं यया तरत्ययत्नेन दुरत्यं तम: ॥८॥


स: राजराजेन वराय चोदित:
he, by the king Kuber, for boon prodded,
ध्रुव: महा-भागवत: महा-मति:
Dhruva, the eminent devotee, very intelligent
हरौ स: वव्रे-
in Shree Hari he sought
अचलिताम् स्मृतिम्
unwavering remembrance
यया तरति-अयत्नेन
by which crosses effortlessly
दुरत्यम् तम:
the difficult ignorance

Prodded by King Kuber for a boon, the eminent devotee and highly intelligent Dhruva, saught for a boon with unwavering rememberance of Shree Hari, by which one effortlessly crosses the difficult to cross ignorance .


तस्य प्रीतेन मनसा तां दत्त्वैडविडस्तत: ।

पश्यतोऽन्तर्दधे सोऽपि स्वपुरं प्रत्यपद्यत ॥९॥


तस्य प्रीतेन मनसा
his, with a glad heart
ताम् दत्त्वा-ऐडविड:-तत:
that (boon) gave, Idawida's son (Kuber) then
पश्यत:-अन्तर्दधे स:-अपि
as looked on vanished, he also
स्व-पुरम् प्रत्यपद्यत
to his own capital returned

The son of Idawida, Kubera, with a glad heart gave that boon to him, and vanished, as he looked on. He also returned to his own capital.


अथायजत यज्ञेशं क्रतुभिर्भूरिदक्षिणै: ।

द्रव्यक्रियादेवतानां कर्म कर्मफलप्रदम् ॥१०॥


अथ-अयजत यज्ञेशम्
then propitiated The Sacrifice Lord
क्रतुभि:-भूरि-दक्षिणै:
by sacrifices and liberal fees
द्रव्य-क्रिया-देवतानाम्
material, ritual, the gods,
कर्म कर्मफल-प्रदम्
the action and the fruit of action dispenser

He, Dhruva, then propitiated The Sacrifice Lord by sacrifices and liberal fees, The Lord, Who is the dispenser of the materials, rituals, gods, the action and the fruits of action of the sacrifices.


सर्वात्मन्यच्युतेऽसर्वे तीव्रौघां भक्तिमुद्वहन् ।

ददर्शात्मनि भूतेषु तमेवावस्थितं विभुम् ॥११॥


सर्व-आत्मनि-अच्युते-
all the beings in The Immortal Lord,
असर्वे तीव्र-औघाम्
(The One Who) excludes all, intense flow
भक्तिम्-उद्वहन्
of devotion maintaining
ददर्श-आत्मनि भूतेषु
saw in himself, and in all beings
तम्-एव-अवस्थितम् विभुम्
Him alone, present The all-pervading Lord.

Dhruva maintained constant intense flow of devotion, towards The immortal Lord who is in all beings and yet Who excludes all, and then he saw The all-pervading Lord present in himself and in all beings .


तमेवं शीलसम्पन्नं ब्रह्मण्यं दीनवत्सलम् ।

गोप्तारं धर्मसेतूनां मिनिरे पितरं प्रजा: ॥१२॥


तम्-एवम् शील-सम्पन्नम्
him, like this, good character having
ब्रह्मण्यम् दीन-वत्सलम्
devoted to Braahmanas, to the helpless kind,
गोप्तारम् धर्म-सेतूनाम्
upholding the righteousness bounds
मिनिरे पितरम् प्रजा:
looked on as father, the public

Dhruva who was of high character, was devoted to the Braahmanas, was kind to the down-trodden and held the bounds of righteousness, was looked upon by the public as their father.


षट्त्रिंशद्वर्षसाहस्रं शशास क्षितिमण्डलम् ।

भोगै: पुण्यक्षयं कुर्वन्नभोगैरशुभक्षयम् ॥१३॥


षट्त्रिंशत्-वर्ष-साहस्रम्
thirty six years thousand
शशास क्षिति-मण्डलम्
ruled the terrestrial globe
भोगै: पुण्य-क्षयम् कुर्वन्-
by luxuries merits exhausting
अभोगै:-अशुभ-क्षयम्
by denial evil exhausting

He ruled the terristrial globe for thirty six thousand years, as he exhausted the merits by luxuries and the evil by denial.


एवं बहुसवं कालं महात्माविचलेन्द्रिय: ।

त्रिवर्गौपयिकं नीत्वा पुत्रायादान्नृपासनम् ॥१४॥


एवम् बहु-सवम् कालम्
thus, for many years of time
महात्मा-अविचल-इन्द्रिय:
the great soul of controlled senses
त्रि-वर्ग-औपयिकम् नीत्वा
three objects in achieving took
पुत्रा-अदात्-नृप-आसनम्
to the son gave the king's throne

Thus, Dhruva, with controlled senses, having spent many years in achieving the three objects, Dharma, Artha and Kaama, gave the king's throne to his son.


मन्यमान इदं विश्वं मायारचितमात्मनि ।

अविद्यारचितस्वप्नगन्धर्वनगरोपमम् ॥१५॥


मन्यमान: इदम् विश्वम्
regarding, this universe
माया-रचितम्--आत्मनि
by Maayaa created, in himself
अविद्या-रचित-स्वप्न-
by ignorance created dream,
गन्धर्व-नगर-उपमम्
hallucination town in comparison

He, in himself, understood this universe like a dream or hallucination town, compared to, being created by Maayaa, and by ignorance created in himself.


आत्मस्त्र्यपत्यसुहृदो बलमृद्धकोशमन्त:पुरं परिविहारभुवश्च रम्या: ।

भूमण्डलं जलधिमेखलमाकलय्य कालोपसृष्टमिति स प्रययौ विशालाम् ॥१६॥


आत्म-स्त्री-
his body, wives,
अपत्य-सुहृद:
children, friends,
बलम्-ऋद्ध-कोशम्-
army, rich treasury,
अन्त:पुरम् परिविहार-
the inner chamber, pleasure
भुव:-च रम्या:
grounds and delightful
भू-मण्डलम् जलधि-मेखलम्-
the terrestrial globe by ocean bound
आकलय्य काल-उपसृष्टम्-
understanding by Death overtaken
इति स: प्रययौ विशालाम्
thus, he departed for Vishaalaa

Understanding that his body, the wives, children, friends, the army, the rich treasury, the inner chamber, the delightful pleasure grounds, so much so, the terrestrial globe bound by the ocean, was all overcome by Death (Time), he departed for Vishaalaa, Badrinaath.


तस्यां विशुद्धकरण: शिववार्विगाह्य बद्ध्वाऽऽसनं जितमरुन्मनसाऽऽहृताक्ष: ।

स्थूले दधार भगवत्प्रतिरूप एतद् ध्यायंस्तदव्यवहितो व्यसृजत्समाधौ ॥१७॥


तस्याम् विशुद्ध-करण:
in her (Ganga) purified mind
शिव-वा:-विगाह्य
pure waters bathing
बद्ध्वा-आसनम्
steadying in a (sitting) posture
जित-मरुत्-
winning the breath
मनसा-आहृत-अक्ष:
by the mind withdrawing the senses
स्थूले दधार
in the gross, fixed
भगवत्-प्रतिरूपे
Lord's form
एतद् ध्यायन्-
this meditating on
तत्-अव्यवहित:
that distinction disappeared
व्यसृजत्-समाधौ
was lost in Samaadhi

His mind was purified by bathing in the pure waters of Ganga. He steadied himself in a sitting posture, and controlling his breath, withdrew his senses by the mind and fixed it on the gross form of the Lord. Meditating on this form the distinction of subject and object disappeared and he was lost in Samaadhi.


भक्तिं हरौ भगवति प्रवहन्नजस्रमानन्दबाष्पकलया मुहुरर्द्यमान: ।

विक्लिद्यमानहृदय: पुलकाचिताङ्गो नात्मानमस्मरदसाविति मुक्तलिङ्ग: ॥१८॥


भक्तिम् हरौ भगवति
devotion in Hari The Lord
प्रवहन्-अजस्रम्-
flowing unceasing
आनन्द-बाष्प-कलया
blissful tears flowing
मुहु:-अर्द्यमान:
again and again drenched
विक्लिद्यमान-हृदय:
melted heart
पुलक-आचित-अङ्ग:
with horripilation covered body
न-आत्मानम्-अस्मरत्-
did not himself remember
असौ-इति
this (Dhruva) thus
मुक्त-लिङ्ग:
freed of body (consciousness)

His devotion towards Lord Hari was flowing unceasingly, he was again and again drenched by the flow of blissful tears, his heart melted and his body was covered with horripillation, he did not remember himself, thus, this Dhruva was free of body consciousness.


स ददर्श विमानाग्र्यं नभसोऽवतरद् ध्रुव: ।

विभ्राजयद्दश दिशो राकापतिमिवोदितम् ॥१९॥


स: ददर्श विमान-अग्र्यम्
he saw Ariel car excellent
नभस:-अवतरत् ध्रुव:
from sky landing, Dhruva
विभ्राजयत्-दश दिश:
illumining the ten quarters
राकापतिम्-इव-उदितम्
full moon like arising

He, Dhruva saw an excellent ariel car descending from the sky, illumining the ten quarters, like a full moon rising.


तत्रानु देवप्रवरौ चतुर्भुजौ श्यामौ किशोरावरुणाम्बुजेक्षणौ ।

स्थिताववष्टभ्य गदां सुवाससौ किरीटहाराङ्गदचारुकुण्डलौ ॥२०॥


तत्र-अनु देव-प्रवरौ
there inside two gods foremost
चतुर्भुजौ श्यामौ किशोरौ-
four armed, dark, young,
अरुण-अम्बुज-इक्षणौ
red lotus eyed
स्थितौ-अवष्टभ्य गदाम्
standing leaning on the mace
सुवाससौ
beautifully clothed
किरीट-हार-अङ्गद-
diadem, necklace armlets
चारु-कुण्डलौ
charming ear-rings (wearing)

There, inside, were two foremost gods, four armed, dark hued, young, with eyes like red lotuses, beautifully cloathed, wearing diadems, pearl necklaces, armlets and charming ear-rings and leaning on the mace as they stood there.


विज्ञाय तावुत्तमगायकिङ्करावभ्युत्थित: साध्वसविस्मृतक्रम: ।

ननाम नामानि गृणन्मधुद्विष: पार्षत्प्रधानाविति संहताञलि: ॥२१॥


विज्ञाय तौ
knowing them
उत्तमगाय-किङ्करौ-
of The excellent renowned (Lord's) attendents
अभ्युत्थित: साध्वस
rising up hastily
विस्मृत-क्रम:
forgetting the sequence (of worship)
ननाम नामानि गृणन्-
bowed names uttering
मधुद्विष:
of Madhusoodana
पार्षत्-प्रधानौ-इति
attendents foremost this
संहत-अञ्जलि:
joined palms

Knowing the two of them to be the attendents of The excellent renowned Lord, he arose hastily and forgot the sequence of worshipping them. Instead he just uttered the names of Madhusoodana, as he bowed with joined palms to the foremost of the attendents.


तं कृष्णपादाभिनिविष्टचेतसं बद्धाञ्जलिं प्रश्रयनम्रकन्धरम् ।

सुनन्दनन्दावुपसृत्य सस्मितं प्रत्यूचतु: पुष्करनाभसम्मतौ ॥२२॥


तम् कृष्ण-पाद-अभिनिविष्ट-
to him (Dhruva) on Krishna's feet placed
चेतसम् बद्ध-अञ्जलिम्
mind, joined palms
प्रश्रय-नम्र-कन्धरम्
humbly bowed head
सुनन्द-नन्दौ-उपसृत्य
Sunanda and Nanda, went close
सस्मितम् प्रत्यूचतु:
and smilingly, spoke
पुष्करनाभ-सम्मतौ
of The lotus navel Lord's favourite

The two favourite attendents of The Lotus Navel Lord Vishnu, Sunanda and Nanda saw Dhruva whose mind was placed in the feet of Krishna and who was standing with joined palms and humbely bowed head. They approached him and smilingly spoke to him ….


सुनन्दनन्दौ ऊचतु: _
Sunanda and Nanda said -
भो भो राजन् सुभद्रम् ते वाचं नोऽवहित: शृणु ।

य: पञ्चवर्षस्तपसा भवान्देवमतीतृपत् ॥२३॥


भो: भो: राजन् सुभद्रम् ते
O ! Oh! King! blessed be you
वाचम् न:-अवहित: शृणु
words ours attentively listen to
य: पञ्च-वर्ष:-तपसा
who of five years, by penance
भवान्-देवम्-अतीतृपत्
you, the Lord propitiated

O! Oh! King! listen to our words attentively, you, at the age of five years have propitiated The Lord, with penance.


तस्याखिलजगद्धातुरावां देवस्य शार्ङ्गिण: ।

पार्षदाविह सम्प्राप्तौ नेतुं त्वां भगवत्पदं ॥२४॥


तस्य-अखिल-जगत्-धातु:
His, of the whole world's Sustainer,
आवाम् देवस्य शार्ङ्गिण:
we, of the Lord having the Shaaranga bow
पार्षदौ-इह सम्प्राप्तौ
attendents, here have come
नेतुम् त्वाम् भगवत्-पदम्
to take you, to the Lord's realm

We, the attendents of The Sustainer of the whole world, and The One Who holds the Shaaranga bow, have come here to take you to the realm of The Lord.


सुदुर्जयं विष्णुपदं जितं त्वया यत्सूरयोऽप्राप्य विचक्षते परम् ।

आतिष्ठ तच्चन्द्रदिवाकरादयो ग्रहर्क्षतारा: परियन्ति दक्षिणम् ॥२५॥


सुदुर्जयम् विष्णु-पदम्
very difficult to attain Vishnu's abode
जितम् त्वया
conquered by you
यत्-सूरय:-अप्राप्य
which the great sages do not attain
विचक्षते परम्
look up to the ultimate
आतिष्ठ तत्-चन्द्र-दिवाकर-
come and take that Moon Sun
आदय: ग्रह-ऋक्ष-तारा:
and other planets, lunar mansions and stars
परियन्ति दक्षिणम्
revolve around on the left

You have conquered that abode of Vishnu which is very difficult to attain even by the great sages, and which they look up to as the ultimate. Come with us and take that realm, around which the Moon, the Sun and the other planets, lunar mansion and stars revolve, keeping to its left.


अनास्थितं ते पितृभिरन्यैरप्यङ्ग कर्हिचित् ।

आतिष्ठ जगतां वन्द्यं तद्विष्णो: परमं पदम् ॥२६॥


अनास्थितम् ते पितृभि:-
not approached by your forefathers
अन्यै:-अपि-अङ्ग कर्हिचित्
others also, O Dear! Ever
आतिष्ठ जगताम् वन्द्यम्
reside, of the world's celebrated
तत्-विष्णो: परमम् पदम्
that Vishnu's exalted realm

In the world's celebrated exalted realm of Vishnu, where your forefathers or others have never gone to, come, reside there.


एतद्विमानप्रवरमुत्तमश्लोकमौलिना ।

उपस्थापितमायुष्मन्नधिरोढुं त्वमर्हसि ॥२७॥


एतत्-विमान-प्रवरम्-
this Ariel car excellent
उत्तमश्लोक-मौलिना
by The highly renowned's foremost
उपस्थापितम्-आयुष्मन्-
sent, O Long-lived One!
अधिरोढुम् त्वम्-अर्हसि
to mount you are worthy

O Long-lived One! This excellent ariel car sent for you by the foremost of the highly renowned, The Lord, you are worthy to mount.


मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
निशम्य वैकुण्ठनियोज्यमुख्ययोर्मधुच्युतं वाचमुरुक्रमप्रिय: ।

कृताभिषेक: कृतनित्यमङ्गलो मुनीन् प्रणम्याशिषमभ्यवादयत् ॥२८॥


निशम्य वैकुण्ठ-नियोज्य-मुख्ययो:-
hearing, of Heaven's attendents' chief
मधु-च्युतम् वाचम्-
honey oozing words
उरुक्रम-प्रिय: कृत-अभिषेक:
The Lord's beloved, having bathed
कृत-नित्य-मङ्गल:
performed daily rituals
मुनीन् प्रणम्य-
the sages greeted
आशिषम्-अभ्यवादयत्
blessings asked for

Hearing the honey oozing words of the two chief attendents of Vaikuntha, The Lord's beloved, Dhruva, bathed, and performed the daily rituals, then greeted the sages and asked for their blessings.


परीत्याभ्यर्च्य धिष्ण्याग्र्यं पार्षदावभिवन्द्य च ।

इयेष तदधिष्ठातुं बिभ्रद्रूपं हिरण्यमयम् ॥२९॥


परीत्य-अभ्यर्च्य
circumambulating, worshipping
धिष्ण्य-अग्र्यम्
of the best the foremost (car)
पार्षदौ-अभिवन्द्य च
the attendents greeting and
इयेष तत्-अधिष्ठातुम्
embarked that to mount
बिभ्रत्-रूपम् हिरण्यमयम्
with shining form, golden

He, with a golden shining form, circumambulated the foremost of the best ariel cars, worshipped it, and greeted the two attendents, and was ready to mount it.


तदोत्तानपद: पुत्रो ददर्शान्तकमागतम् ।

मृत्योर्मूर्ध्नि पदं दत्त्वा आरुरोहाद्भुतं गृहम् ॥३०॥


तत्-उत्तानपद: पुत्र:
He, Uttaanapaada's son
ददर्श-अन्तकम्-आगतम्
saw Death come
मृत्यो:-मूर्ध्नि
on Death's head
पदम् दत्त्वा
foot placing
आरुरोह-अद्भुतम् गृहम्
boarded the wonderful house (car)

He, Uttaanapaada's son saw Death arrived, placing his foot on the head of Death, he mounted the wonderful house of the car.


तदा दुन्दुभयो नेदु:मृदङ्गपणवादय: ।

गन्धर्वमुख्या: प्रजगु: पेतु: कुसुमवृष्टय: ॥३१॥


तदा दुन्दुभय: नेदु:
then trumpets were sounded
मृदङ्ग-पणव-आदय:
drums and tabors
गन्धर्व-मुख्या: प्रजगु:
the Gandharva chiefs sang loudly
पेतु: कुसुम-वृष्टय:
showered flower rains

At that time, the trumpets, drums and tabors sounded by themselves, the Gandharva chiefs sang aloud and flower rains showered.


स च स्वर्लोकमारोक्षयन् सुनीतिं जननीं ध्रुव: ।

अन्वस्मरदगं हित्वा दीनां यास्ये त्रिविष्टपम् ॥३२॥


स: च स्वर्लोकम्-आरोक्षयन्
he and to the heaven proceeding
सुनीतिम् जननीम् ध्रुव:
Suneeti the mother, Dhruva
अन्वस्मरत्-अगम्
remembered inaccessible
हित्वा दीनाम् त्रिविष्टपम्
leaving the poor behind

As he was proceeding to the inaccesible heaven, Dhruva remembered his mother Suneeti and thought how he could go leaving her behind.


इति व्यवसितं तस्य व्यवसाय सुरोत्तमौ ।

दर्शयामासतुर्देवीं पुरो यानेन गच्छतीम् ॥३३॥


इति व्यवसितम् तस्य
this conjecturing his
व्यवसाय सुर-उत्तमौ
arranged the two gods eminent
दर्शयामासतु:-देवीम् पुर:

यानेन गच्छतीम्
by Ariel car going

As the two eminent gods conjectured Dhruvas thought, they arranged to show him the effluent lady going in an ariel car in front.


तत्र तत्र प्रशंसद्भि: पथि वैमानिकै: सुरै: ।

अवकीर्यमाणो ददृशे कुसुमै: क्रमशो ग्रहान् ॥३४॥


तत्र तत्र प्रशंसद्भि:
here and there praising,
पथि वैमानिकै: सुरै:
on the way, by in Ariel cars the gods
अवकीर्यमाण: ददृशे
showering saw
कुसुमै: क्रमश: ग्रहान्
flowers, one after the other, planets

On the way, the gods in their ariel cars sang their praises, and showered flowers, and he saw the planets one after the other.


त्रिलोकीं देवयानेन सोऽतिव्रज्य मुनीनपि ।

परस्ताद्यद् ध्रुवगतिर्विष्णो: पदमथाभ्यगात् ॥३५॥


त्रिलोकीम् देव-यानेन
the three worlds by the celestial car
स:-अतिव्रज्य
he crossed
मुनीन्-अपि
the sages (seven) also
परस्तात्-यत्
beyond that which
ध्रुव-गति:-विष्णो:
Dhruva, the state of Vishnu
पदम्-अथ-अभ्यगात्
that state then reached

Passing over the three worlds, Dhruva crossed over the region of the seven sages, beyond which where there is the state of Vishnu, he reached to that state.


यद् भ्राजमानं स्वरुचैव सर्वतो लोकास्त्रयो ह्यनु विभ्राजन्त एते ।

यन्नाव्रजञ्जन्तुषु येऽननुग्रहा व्रजन्ति भद्राणि चरन्ति येऽनिशम् ॥३६॥


यत् भ्राजमानम्
that shining
स्व-रुचा-एव सर्वत:
by its own lustre only all-around
लोका:-त्रय: हि-अनु
the worlds three indeed by which
विभ्राजन्त एते
are lighted these
यत्-न-अव्रजन्-
which do not visit
जन्तुषु ये-अननुग्रहा
on living beings they who are not compassionate
व्रजन्ति भद्राणि
they reach (who) benevolent deeds
चरन्ति ये-अनिशम्
perform who always

That heaven, shines all-around by its own lustre, and these three worlds also reflect that light. It is the realm which is not visited by those who have no compassion for the living beings, but is reached by those who perform benevolent deeds always.


शान्ता: समदृश: शुद्धा: सर्वभूतानुरञ्जना: ।

यान्त्यञ्जसाच्युतपदमच्युतप्रियबान्धवा: ॥३७॥


शान्ता: समदृश:
peaceful, the same looking at others
शुद्धा: सर्वभूत-अनुरञ्जना:
pure, to all beings pleasing
यान्ति-अञ्जसा-
reach easily
अच्युत-पदम्-
Immortal Lord's abode
अच्युत-प्रिय-बान्धवा:
of The Lord's devotees' friends

Those who are peaceful, and look upon the others as the same, who are pure and are pleasing to all beings, and who are the friends of The Lord's devotees, easily reach the abode of the Immortal Lord.


इत्युत्तात्तनपद: पुत्रो ध्रुव: कृष्णपरायण: ।

अभूत्त्रयाणां लोकानां चूडामणिरिवामल: ॥३८॥


इति-उत्तानपद: पुत्र:
thus Uttaanapaada's son
ध्रुव: कृष्ण-परायण:
Dhruva, to Krishna devoted
अभूत्-त्रयाणाम् लोकानाम्
became, of the three worlds
चूडामणि:-इव-अमल:
diadem like pure

Thus Uttaanapaada's son, Dhruva, devoted to Lord Krishna, became the pure diadem of the three worlds.


गम्भीरवेगोऽनिमषां ज्योतिषां चक्रमाहितम् ।

यस्मिन् भ्रमति कौरव्य मेढ्यामिव गवां गण: ॥३९॥


गम्भीर-वेग:-अनिमषाम्
with great speed, constantly the
ज्योतिषाम् चक्रम्-
stellar sphere
आहितम् यस्मिन् भ्रमति
fastened in which revolves
कौरव्य
O Vidura!
मेढ्याम्-इव
in the thrashing shed like
गवाम् गण:
the oxen many

O Vidura! fastened to which, the stellar sphere revolves constantly with great speed, just as the oxen tied to the post revolve around it, in the thrashing shed.


महिमानं विलोक्यास्य नारदो भगवानृषि: ।

आतोद्यं वितुदञ् श्लोकान् सत्रेऽगायत्प्रचेतसाम् ॥४०॥


महिमानम् विलोक्य-अस्य
glory witnessing his
नारद: भगवान्-ऋषि:
Naarada the worshipful sage
आतोद्यं वितुदञ् श्लोकान्
the lute playing on, Shlokas
सत्रे-अगायत्-प्रचेतसाम्
in the session (of sacrifice), sang, of the Prachetas

The worshipful sage, Naarada, witnessing Dhruva's glory, playing on his lute sang Shlokas during the sacrificial session of the Prachetasas.


नारद उवाच -
Naarada said -
नूनं सुनीते: पतिदेवतायास्तप:प्रभावस्य सुतस्य तां गतिम् ।

दृष्ट्वाभ्युपायानपि वेदवादिनो नैवाधिगन्तुं प्रभवन्ति किं नृपा: ॥४१॥


नूनम् सुनीते:
certainly of Suneeti
पति-देवताया:-
husband's devoted
तप:-प्रभावस्य
penance result
सुतस्य ताम् गतिम्
son's that state
दृष्ट्वा-अभ्युपायान्-अपि
knowing the formulas even
वेद-वादिन:
Veda's expositors
न-एव-अधिगन्तुम्
not even to achieve
प्रभवन्ति किम् नृपा:
able to, what of kings

Certainly, by the result of the husband's devotee, Suneeti's austere penance, her son, Dhruva has achieved the state which even the Veda's expositors, though knowing the formulas, are not able to achieve. What of the kings?


य: पञ्चवर्षो गुरुदारवाक्शरैर्भिन्नेन यातो हृदयेन दूयता ।

वनं मदादेशकरोऽजितं प्रभुं जिगाय तद्भक्तगुणै: पराजितम् ॥४२॥


य: पञ्च-वर्ष: गुरुदार-
who of five years (of age), stepmother's
वाक्-शरै:-भिन्नेन यात:
word arrows pierced went
हृदयेन दूयता वनम्
with heart aching, to the woods
मत्-आदेशकर:-अजितम् प्रभुम्
my instructions following, The unconquerable Lord
जिगाय तत्-भक्त-गुणै: पराजितम्
winning over, by His devotee's virtues defeated

Dhruva, who was five years of age, went to the woods with an aching heart, pierced by his step mother's shaft like words. There, following my instructions, he won over The unconquerable Lord, Who is defeated only by the virtues of His devotees.


य: क्षत्रबन्धुर्भुवि तस्याधिरूढमन्वारुरुक्षेदपि वर्षपूगै: ।

षट्पञ्चवर्षो यदहोभिरल्पै: प्रसाद्य वैकुण्ठमवाप तत्पदम् ॥४३॥


य: क्षत्र-बन्धु:-भुवि
that Kshatriya born, on the earth
तस्य-अधिरूढम्-
by him ascended
अन्वारुरुक्षेत्-अपि वर्ष-पूगै:
does rise to, even by years many
षट्-पञ्च-वर्ष:
in six-five years
यत्-अहोभि:-अल्पै:
that days few
प्रसाद्य वैकुण्ठम्-
pleasing Vishnu
अवाप तत्-पदम्
attained His abode

Who, Kshatriya born, on this earth, even in many years, can ascend that state which was attained by him? By the age of five to six years, even in a few days, by pleasing Lord Vishnu, he attained His abode.


मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
एतत्तेऽभिहितं सर्वं यत्पृष्टोऽहमिह त्वया ।

ध्रुवस्योद्दामयशसश्चरितं सम्मतं सताम् ॥४४॥


एतत्-ते-अभिहितम् सर्वम्
this to you have told all
यत्-पृष्ट:-अहम्-इह त्वया
which was asked of me, here by you
ध्रुवस्य-उद्दाम-यशस:-चरितम्
Dhruva's exalted fame's story
सम्मतम् सताम्
applauded by the noble

That which you asked of me, here, I have told you the whole story about the exalted renown of Dhruva, which is applauded by the noble souls.


धन्यं यशस्यमायुष्यं पुण्यं स्वस्त्ययनं महत् ।

स्वर्ग्यं ध्रौव्यं सौमनस्यं प्रशस्यमघमर्षणम् ॥४५॥


धन्यम् यशस्यम्-आयुष्यम्
wealth conducive, fame conducive, longevity and
पुण्यम् स्वस्ति-अयनम् महत्
is sacred, blessings' house great
स्वर्ग्यम् ध्रौव्यम् सौमनस्यम्
heavenly (and) eternal (bliss), worthy to be heard,
प्रशस्यम्-अघ-मर्षणम्
security providing and sins eradicating

The story is conducive to wealth, fame, longivity and is sacred and is a great house of blessings. It is heavenly and eternal bliss giving and is worthy to be heard, as it provides security and eradicates sins.


श्रुत्वैतच्छ्रद्धयाभीक्ष्णमच्युतप्रियचेष्टितम् ।

भवेद्भक्तिर्भगवति यया स्यात्क्लेशसंक्षय: ॥४६॥


श्रुत्वा-एतत्-श्रद्धया-अभीक्ष्णम्-
hearing this, with reverence, again and again
अच्युत-प्रिय-चेष्टितम्
The Immortal Lord's favourite's efforts
भवेत्-भक्ति:-भगवति
will be devotion in The Lord
यया स्यात्-क्लेश-संक्षय:
by which will happen all afflictions' end

Hearing this story with reverence again and again, which is about the efforts of The Immortal Lord's favourite devotee, devotion to The Lord will be generated and all afflictions will end.


महत्त्वमिच्छतां तीर्थं श्रोतु: शीलादयो गुणा: ।

यत्र तेजस्तदिच्छूनां मानो यत्र मनस्विनाम् ॥४७॥


महत्त्वम्-इच्छताम् तीर्थम्
greatness aspiring for, it is the holy place
श्रोतु: शील-आदय: गुणा:
of the listeners amiability and other virtues
यत्र तेज:-तत्-इच्छूनाम्
where glow (is), that willing to have
मान: यत्र मनस्विनाम्
honour where for honour seekers

This story is the holy place for those seeking greatness, to the listeners it gives amiability and other virtues, it is where there is spiritual glow for those who are willing to have it, and there is honour here for those seek honour.


प्रयत: कीर्तयेत्प्रात: समवाये द्विजन्मनाम् ।

सायं च पुण्यश्लोकस्य ध्रुवस्य चरितं महत् ॥४८॥


प्रयत: कीर्तयेत्-प्रात:
with concentration chant in the morning
समवाये द्विजन्मनाम्
in a group of Braahmanas
सायम् च पुण्य-श्लोकस्य
in evening and of the sacred renowned
ध्रुवस्य चरितम् महत्
Dhruva's story great

One must chant the great story of the sacred renowned Dhruva, among a group of Braahmanas, every morning and evening.


पौर्णमास्यां सिनीवाल्यां द्वादश्यां श्रवणेऽथवा ।

दिनक्षये व्यतीपाते सङ्क्रमेऽर्कदिनेऽपि वा ॥४९॥


पौर्णमास्याम् सिनीवाल्याम्
on full moon (day), on new moon (day)
द्वादश्याम् श्रवणे-अथवा
on the twelfth day (of the month), on Shraavana or
दिन-क्षये व्यतीपाते
at the day's end, on Vyatipaata
सङ्क्रमे-अर्कदिने-अपि वा
on Sankranti, and Sunday also or

It should be chanted on a full moon day, a new moon day, on the twelth day of the month on Sarvana, the day's end, on Vyatipaata, on Sankranti and or also on Sundays.


श्रावयेच्छ्रद्दधानानां तीर्थपादपदाश्रय: ।

नेच्छंस्तत्रात्मनाऽऽत्मानं सन्तुष्ट इति सिध्यति ॥५०॥


श्रावयेत्-श्रद्दधानानाम्
must recite to the devoted
तीर्थ-पाद-पदाश्रय:
to the holy feet devoted
न-इच्छन्-तत्र-
not desiring thereby
आत्मना-आत्मानम्
by self himself
सन्तुष्ट: इति सिध्यति
satisfied, it is perfected

This should be recited to the devotees of the holy feet of the Lord, not desiring anything thereby, in himself self-satisfied, it is then perfected.


ज्ञानमज्ञाततत्त्वाय यो दद्यात्सत्पथेऽमृतम् ।

कृपालोर्दीननाथस्य देवास्तस्यानुगृह्णते ॥५१॥


ज्ञानम्-अज्ञात-तत्त्वाय
the knowledge, to the not knower of the Truth
य: दद्यात्-सत्-पथे-अमृतम्
who gives the Truth path's nectar
कृपालो:-दीन-नाथस्य
of that compassionate benefactor of the afflicted
देवा:-तस्य-अनुगृह्णते
the gods his shower grace

The compassionte benefactor of the afflicted, who imparts the knowledge of the Truth, to the one who has no knowledge of the Truth, which is the nectar to the path leading to God-Realization, on him the gods shower their grace.


इदं मया तेऽभिहितं कुरूद्वह ध्रुवस्य विख्यातविशुद्धकर्मण: ।

हित्वार्भक: कीडनकानि मातुर्गृहं च विष्णुं शरणं यो जगाम ॥५२॥


इदम् मया ते-अभिहितम्
this by me to you was said
कुरूद्वह ध्रुवस्य विख्यात-
O Foremost of the Kurus! Dhruva's famous
विशुद्ध-कर्मण: हित्वा-अर्भक:
pious doings, leaving the child
कीडनकानि मातु:-गृहम् च
toys and mother's house
विष्णुम् शरणम् य: जगाम
to Vishnu's shelter, who went to

O Foremost of the Kurus! I have narrated this famous story of the pious doings of the child Dhruva, who leaving behind the toys and mother's house went for the shelter of Lord Vishnu.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां चतुर्थस्कन्धे ध्रुवचरितं नाम द्वदशोऽध्याय: ॥१२॥


Thus ends the twelfth discourse entitled 'The Narrative of Dhruva' in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
