मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
मौक्तिकै: कुसुमस्रग्भिर्दुकूलै: स्वर्णतोरणै: ।
महासुरभिभिर्धूपैर्मण्डितं तत्र तत्र वै ॥१॥
मौक्तिकै: कुसुम-स्रग्भि:-
by pearl (strings), flower garlands
दुकूलै: स्वर्ण-तोरणै:
drapery, golden festoons,
महासुरभिभि:-धूपै:-
highly perfumed incenses
मण्डितम् तत्र तत्र वै
decorated every where indeed
Prithu's capital was decorated every where, by pearl strings, flower garlands, drapery, golden festoons, highly perfumed insences.
चन्दनागुरुतोयार्द्ररथ्याचत्वरमार्गवत् ।
पुष्पाक्षतफलैस्तोक्मैर्लाजैरर्चिर्भिरर्चितम् ॥२॥
चन्दन-अगुरु-तोय-आर्द्र-
sandal, aloe, waters sprinkled
रथ्या-चत्वर-मार्गवत्
pathways, crossings, roads,
पुष्प-अक्षत-फलै:-तोक्मै:-
flowers, rice, fruits, sprouts
लाजै:-अर्चिर्भि:-अर्चितम्
puffed wheat, and other auspicious sprinklers sprinkled
The pathways, crossings and roads were sprayed with sandal and aloe water, and were sprinkled with auspicious sprinkling objects like, flowers, rice, fruits, barley sprouts, puffed wheat, etc,.
सवृन्दै: कदलीस्तम्भै: पूगपोतै: परिष्कृतम् ।
तरुपल्लवमालाभि: सर्वत: समलंकृतम् ॥३॥
स-वृन्दै: कदली-स्तम्भै:
with fruits, banana stalks
पूग-पोतै: परिष्कृतम्
areca clusters, well beautified
तरु-पल्लव-मालाभि:
by trees 'leaves' garlands
सर्वत: समलंकृतम्
all around decorated
The stalks of banana and fruits, and clusters of areca beautified the place, and it was decorated everywhere with garlands made of mango trees young leaves.
प्रजास्तं दीपबलिभि: सम्भृताशेषमङ्गलै: ।
अभीयुर्मृष्टकन्याश्च मृष्टकुण्डलमण्डिता: ॥४॥
प्रजा:-तम् दीप-बलिभि:
the public, him, with lights strings
सम्भृत-अशेष-मङ्गलै:
collected endless auspicious (materials)
अभीयु:-मृष्ट-कन्या:-च
welcomed fair maids and
मृष्ट-कुण्डल-मण्डिता:
shining earrings adorned
He was welcomed by the public with strings of light and endless auspicious articles which were collected, and by fair maids adorned with shining earrings.
शङ्खदुन्दुभिघोषेण ब्रह्मघोषेण चर्त्विजाम् ।
विवेश भवनं वीर: स्तूयमानो गतस्मय: ॥५॥
शङ्ख-दुन्दुभि-घोषेण
conch trumpet sounding
ब्रह्म-घोषेण च-ऋत्विजाम्
Vedas being chanted, and by the priests
विवेश भवनम् वीर:
entered the palace, the mighty one,
स्तूयमान: गतस्मय:
extolled, without pride
He entered the palace without any pride, being extalled by the bards, with the conch and trumpets being blown, and the priests chanting Vedic hymns.
पूजित: पूजयामास तत्र तत्र महायशा: ।
पौराञ्जानपदांस्तांस्तान् प्रीत: प्रियवरप्रद: ॥६॥

He was greeted everywhere and he hounoured the citizens and the ministers, and pleased, gave them and the others, their desired boons to them.
स एवमादीन्यनवद्यचेष्टित: कर्माणि भूयांसि महान्महत्तम: ।
कुर्वन् शशासावनिमण्डलं यश: स्फीतं निधायारुरुहे परं पदम् ॥७॥

Prithu, the great of the greatest, like the milching of the earth and other good efforts and deeds doing, ruled the earths' globe and establishing a bright fame, ascended to the highest of the states, that of the abode of the Lord.
तदादिराजस्य यशो विजृम्भितं गुणैरशेषैर्गुणवत्सभाजितम् ।
क्षत्ता महाभागवत: सदस्पते कौषारविं प्राह गृणन्तमर्चयन् ॥८॥

O Shaunaka! to Maitreya said
गृणन्तम्-अर्चयन्
describing, greeting
O Shaunaka! Maitreya was describing the endless virtues of the primary monarch Prithu, which had won the homage of the preatigious and whose fame was extended, to him, the great devotee Vidura, said…..
विदुर उवाच -
Vidura said -
सोऽभिषिकत: पृथुर्विप्रैर्लब्धाशेषसुरार्हण: ।
बिभ्रत् स वैष्णवं तेजो बाह्वोर्याभ्यां दुदोह गाम् ॥९॥
स:-अभिषिकत: पृथु:-विप्रै:-
he was coronate, Prithu by the Braahmanas
लब्ध-अशेष-सुर-अर्हण:
got endless god's honour
बिभ्रत् स: वैष्णवम् तेज:
shining he, with Vishnu's lustre
बाह्वो:-याभ्याम् दुदोह गाम्
in the arms by which, mulched the cow (earth)
He, Prithu was coronated by the Braahmanas, and had received honours from the gods, and his arms were lusterous by the power of Vishnu, by which he had milched the earth cow.
को न्वस्य कीर्तिं न शृणोत्यभिज्ञो यद्विक्रमोच्छिष्टमशेषभूपा: ।
लोका: सपाला उपजीवन्ति काममद्यापि तन्मे वद कर्म शुद्धम् ॥१०॥
क: नु-अस्य कीर्तिम्
who indeed the fame
न शृणोति-अभिज्ञ:
will not hear the knower
यत्-विक्रम:-उच्छिष्टम्-
whose prowess left over
अशेष-भूपा: लोका: सपाला:
all the kings, the worlds and their guardians
उपजीवन्ति कामम्-अद्य-अपि
enjoy, at will, even today also
तत्-मे वद कर्म शुद्धम्
that to me say, deeds pure
Which man, who knows, will not hear, indeed, of the fames of the powers of king Prithu, the remains of which are at will, enjoyed by all the kings, worlds and their gaurdians upto this day. Do tell me more of such faultless doings.
मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
गङ्गायमुनयोर्नद्योरन्तराक्षेत्रमावसन् ।
आरब्धानेव बुभुजे भोगान् पुण्यजिहासया ॥११॥
गङ्गा-यमुनयो:-नद्यो:-
The Ganga Yamuna rivers'
अन्तरा-क्षेत्रम्-आवसन्
between land, living in
आरब्धान्-एव बुभुजे
past deeds' (fruits) only enjoyed
भोगान् पुण्य-जिहासया
the pleasures, merit to exhaust intending
He lived, ruled on the land in between the two rivers, Gangaa and Yamuna, and enjoyed the pleasures which were the fruits of the past deeds, with the intention of exhausting the merits.
सर्वत्रास्खलितादेश: सप्तद्वीपैकदण्डधृक् ।
अन्यत्र ब्राह्मणकुलादन्यत्राच्युतगोत्रत: ॥१२॥
सर्वत्र-अस्खलित-आदेश:
every where undisputed command
सप्त-द्वीप-एक-दण्ड-धृक्
seven division, one rule holding
अन्यत्र ब्राह्मण-कुलात्-
besides the Braahmana's race
अन्यत्र-अच्युत-गोत्रत:
besides Immortal Lord's votaries
In all the main seven divisions of the earth, his was one ruler and his commands were undisputed, except for the Braahmana race and except the votaries of the Immortal Lord.
एकदाऽऽसीन्महासत्रदीक्षा तत्र दिवौकसाम् ।
समाजो ब्रह्मर्षीणां च राजर्षीणां च सत्तम ॥१३॥
एकदा-आसीत्-महा-सत्र-
one day there was a great congregation,
दीक्षा तत्र दिवौकसाम्
consecration there of heavenly beings
समाज: ब्रह्म-ऋषीणाम् च
gathering, of Braahmana sages and
राज-ऋषीणाम् च सत्तम
royal sages and O Sattama! (Vidura)
O Noble Vidura! There was once, a great congregation of heavenly beings, of Brahmana sages and royal sages on the occasion of a sacrificial session for which Prithu had concecrated himself.
तस्मिन्नर्हत्सु सर्वेषु स्वर्चितेषु यथार्हत: ।
उत्थित: सदसो मध्ये ताराणामुडुराडिव ॥१४॥
तस्मिन्-अर्हत्सु सर्वेषु
in there, in the honourable all
सु-अर्चितेषु यथा-अर्हत:
well honoured, as per position
उत्थित: सदस: मध्ये
arose in the assembly midst
ताराणाम्-उडुराड्-इव
among stars moon like
There, in that assembly, all the hounrable persons were hanoured as per their position. Then in the midst of them, he, Prithu arose like a moon among the stars.
प्रांशु: पीनायतभुजो गौर: कञ्जारुणेक्षण: ।
सुनास: सुमुख: सौम्य: पीनांस: सुद्विजस्मित: ॥१५॥
प्रांशु: पीन-आयत-भुज:
of tall frame, stout long armed
गौर: कञ्ज-अरुण-ईक्षण:
fair, lotus red eyes
सुनास: सुमुख: सौम्य:
handsome nose, charming face, gentle,
पीन-अंस: सुद्विज-स्मित:
round shouldered, beautiful teeth, winsome smile
He had a tall frame, and strong and long arms, fair complexion, lotus red eyes, handsome nose, charming and gentle face, rounded shoulders, beautiful rows of teeth and a winsome smile.
व्यूढवक्षा बृहच्छ्रोणिर्वलिवल्गुदलोदर: ।
आवर्तनाभिरोजस्वी काञ्चनोरुरुदग्रपात् ॥१६॥
व्यूढ-वक्षा: बृहत्-श्रोणि:-
(he was) broad chested, bulky hips
वलि-वल्गु-दल-उदर:
with folds charming (fig) leaf like belly
आवर्त-नाभि:-ओजस्वी
circular navel, vigorous,
काञ्चन-उरु:-उदग्रपात्
golden thighs, raised toes
He had a broad chest, bulky hips, charming belly with folds like the leaves of fig tree, circular navel, vigorous golden thighs, and raised toes.
सूक्ष्मवक्रासितस्निग्धमूर्धज: कम्बुकन्धर: ।
महाधने दुकूलाग्र्ये परिधायोपवीय च ॥१७॥
सूक्ष्म-वक्र-असित स्निग्ध-
fine, curly, black, sleek
मूर्धज: कम्बु-कन्धर:
hair, conch-shell like throat
महा-धने दुकूल-अग्र्ये
costly silk clothes high-class
परिधाय-उपवीय च
worn around the waist and above
His hair were thin, curly, black and sleek. His throat had three lines like a conch-shell. He wore two high class costly silk garments, one around the waist and the other above, on the shoulders.
व्यञ्जिताशेषगात्रश्रीर्नियमे न्यस्तभूषण: ।
कृष्णाजिनधर: श्रीमान् कुशपाणि: कृतोचित: ॥१८॥
व्यञ्जित-अशेष-गात्र-श्री:-
manifest all limbs' beauty
नियमे न्यस्त-भूषण:
in vow had not worn ornaments
कृष्ण-अजिन-धर: श्रीमान्
black buck skin wearing, graceful
कुश-पाणि: कृत-उचित:
Kusha (grass) in hand, had performed required (duties)
As he was observing the vow of abstinence, he had not worn any ornaments, so the natural beauty of his limbs was manifest. He was looking graceful wearing a black buck skin, with Kusha grass in hand. He had performed the required duties.
शिशिरस्निग्धताराक्ष: समैक्षत समन्तत: ।
ऊचिवानिदमुर्वीश: सद: संहर्षयन्निव ॥१९॥
शिशिर-स्निग्ध-तार-अक्ष:
(with) cool compassionate, soothing eyes
समैक्षत समन्तत:
looked around the assembly
ऊचिवान्-इदम्-उर्वीश:
spoke this, the king
सद: संहर्षयन्-इव
the assembly delighting as if
The king looked around the assembly with cool compassionate soothing eyes and spoke like this, delighting the assembly as if.
चारुचित्रपदं श्लक्ष्णं मृष्टं गूढमविक्लवम् ।
सर्वेषामुपकारार्थं तदा अनुवदन्निव ॥२०॥
चारु-चित्र-पदम् श्लक्ष्णम्
charming, figurative expression, pleasing
मृष्टम् गूढम्-अविक्लवम्
polished, deep and uninterrupted
सर्वेषाम्-उपकार-अर्थम्
for everyone's benefit meaning
तदा अनुवदन्-इव
then spoke like this
Then, he spoke in a charming manner, with figurative expressions, in pleasing and polished words, with deep meaning and uninturrupted voice, with a purpose to benefit everyone, …..
राजा-उवाच -
The king said -
सभ्या: शृणुत भद्रं व: साधवो य इहागता: ।
सत्सु जिज्ञासुभिर्धर्ममावेद्यं स्वमनीषितम् ॥२१॥
सभ्या: शृणुत भद्रम् व:
gentlemen do listen, may well be with you
साधव: ये इह-आगता:
noble men who have come here
सत्सु जिज्ञासुभि:-
to the pious souls, by the inquisitive
धर्मम्-आवेद्यम्
righteousness should be discussed
स्व-मनीषितम्
as ones desire
O gentelemen! Do listen! May all be well with you. The noble men who have come here, and among the pious souls, the inquisitive people who are eager to know about righteousness, should present their own thoughts.
अहं दण्डधरो राजा प्रजानामिह योजित: ।
रक्षिता वृत्तिद: स्वेषु सेतुषु स्थापिता पृथक् ॥२२॥
अहम् दण्ड-धर: राजा
I, punishment giver king
प्रजानाम्-इह योजित:
by the public here am assigned
रक्षिता वृत्तिद:
to protect, livelihood providing
स्वेषु सेतुषु
in own spheres employed
स्थापिता पृथक्
established different
I am assingned the king, the ruler, with the role of the punishment giver, the protector, livelihood provider and establishing the people in different spheres and keeping them within that.
तस्य मे तदनुष्ठानाद्यानाहुर्ब्रह्मवादिन: ।
लोका: स्यु: कामसन्दोहा यस्य तुष्यति दिष्टदृक् ॥२३॥
तस्य मे तत्-अनुष्ठानात्-
of that me, that (duties) discharging
यान्-आहु:-ब्रह्म-वादिन:
which are told by Veda knowers
लोका: स्यु: काम-सन्दोहा:
realms may be desire yielding
यस्य तुष्यति दिष्टदृक्
by whom is satisfied, The All Perceiver (Lord)
By that me, the duties which are assigned by knowers of the Vedas, if discharged, satisfied by which, The All-Perciever Lord may give me the realms which are desire yielding.
य उद्धरेत्करं राजा प्रजा धर्मेष्वशिक्षयन् ।
प्रजानां शमलं भुङ्क्ते भगं च स्वं जहाति स: ॥२४॥
य: उद्धरेत्-करम् राजा
he (who) levies taxes, the king
प्रजा धर्मेषु-अशिक्षयन्
the public in righteousness, does not teach
प्रजानाम् शमलम् भुङ्क्ते
of the people sins incurs
भगम् च स्वम् जहाति स:
fortune and own, forfeits he
A king who levies taxes on the public but fails to teach them righteousness, incurs the sins of the people and forfiets his own fortune.
तत् प्रजा भर्तृपिण्डार्थं स्वार्थमेवानसूयव: ।
कुरुताधोक्षजधियस्तर्हि मेऽनुग्रह: कृत: ॥२५॥
तत् प्रजा भर्तृ-पिण्ड-अर्थम्
so the people, for the master's here-after welfare
स्वार्थम्-एव-अनसूयव:
as a self interest only, without jealousy
कुरुत-अधोक्षज-धिय:-
should do, in The Lord Vishnu mind
तर्हि मे-अनुग्रह: कृत:
then on me favour will be done
Therefore, the people should, as a self interest only, without any jealousy, fix their mind in Lord Vishnu, by which their master's here-after welfare will be done and favour to me also will be done.
यूयं तदनुमोदध्वं पितृदेवर्षयोऽमला: ।
कर्तु: शास्तुरनुज्ञातुस्तुल्यं यत्प्रेत्य तत्फलम् ॥२६॥
यूयम् तत्-अनुमोदध्वम्
you all, that support
पितृ-देव-ऋषय:-अमला:
manes, gods, sages pure
कर्तु: शास्तु:-अनुज्ञातु:-
doer preacher and supporter
तुल्यम् यत्-प्रेत्य तत्-फलम्
same, hereafter its fruit
You all, the pure minded manes, gods, and sages, may support this, because here-after, the fruit for the doer, preacher and the supporter of a proposition, is the same.
अस्ति यज्ञपतिर्नाम केषाञ्चिदर्हसत्तमा: ।
इहामुत्र लक्ष्यन्ते ज्योत्स्नावत्य: क्वचिद्भुव: ॥२७॥
अस्ति यज्ञ-पति:-नाम
there is The Lord indeed
केषाञ्चित्-अर्ह-सत्तमा:
by some, worshipful and exalted
इह-अमुत्र लक्ष्यन्ते
here and hereafter, are seen
ज्योत्स्नावत्य: क्वचित्-भुव:
brilliant somewhere on the earth
It is believed by some worshipful and exalted people, that there indeed is The Lord, who dispenses the fruits of actions here and hereafter and on the earth many a times unmatched brilliance is also seen.
मनोरुत्तानपादस्य ध्रुवस्यापि महीपते: ।
प्रियव्रतस्य राजर्षेरङ्गस्यास्मत्पितु: पितु: ॥२८॥
मनो:-उत्तानपादस्य
of Manu, of Uttaanapaada,
ध्रुवस्य-अपि महीपते:
of Dhruva also, the king
प्रियव्रतस्य राजर्षे:-अङ्गस्य-
of Priyavrata, of the royal sage Anga,
अस्मत्-पितु: पितु:
our father's father
O Manu, Uttaanapaada, King Dhruva, Priyavrata, of our father's father, the royal sage Anga, ….
ईदृशानामथान्येषामजस्य च भवस्य च ।
प्रह्लादस्य बलेश्चापि कृत्यमस्ति गदाभृता ॥२९॥
ईदृशानाम्-अथ-अन्येषाम्-
like these, then, the others
अजस्य च भवस्य च
of Brahmaa, and of Shiva, and
प्रह्लादस्य बले:-च-अपि
Prahlaada, Bali and also
कृत्यम्-अस्ति गदाभृता
purpose is in The Mace Wielder (Naaraayana)
Like these, then others also, Brahmaa, Shiva, Prahalaada, Bali also had purpose in The Mace Wielder Lord Naaraayana.
दौहित्रादीनृते मृत्यो: शोच्यान् धर्मविमोहितान् ।
वर्गस्वर्गापवर्गाणां प्रायेणैकात्म्यहेतुना ॥३०॥
दौहित्र-आदीन्-ऋते मृत्यो:
grandson and others besides, of Death,
शोच्यान् धर्म-विमोहितान्
the disgraced, from righteousness deluded
वर्ग-स्वर्ग-अपवर्गाणाम्
the three human pursuits, heaven, and beatitude,
प्रायेण-एकात्म्य-हेतुना
generally, by intense devotion subjected
Besides, some others and the grandson of Death, disgraced (Vena), were deluded from righteousness. The three human persuits, heaven and final beatitude are subject to intense devotion.
यत्पादसेवाभिरुचिस्तपस्विनामशेषजन्मोपचितं मलं धिय: ।
सद्य: क्षिणोत्यन्वहमेधती सती यथा पदाङ्गुष्ठविनि:सृता सरित् ॥३१॥
यत्-पाद-सेवा-अभिरुचि:-
by whose feet service inclined
तपस्विनाम्-अशेष-जन्म-
of the pious of many births
उपचितम् मलम् धिय:
accumulated, impurities of the mind
सद्य: क्षिणोति-अन्वहम्-
soon washes away every day
एधती सती
increasing, when,
यथा पद-अङ्गुष्ठ-
like (His) feet big toe
विनि:सृता सरित्
emerged river (Ganga)
Just as the river Ganga, which has emerged from The Lord's feet big toe, is known to wash off the sins of the people, the pious people who are inclined to the ever inreasing service to the feet of The Lord, their impurities of the mind, accumulated from many previous births are wiped out.
विनिर्धुताशेषमनोमल: पुमानसङ्गविज्ञानविशेषवीर्यवान् ।
यदङ्घ्रिमूले कृतकेतन: पुनर्न संसृतिं क्लेशवहां प्रपद्यते ॥३२॥
विनिर्धुत-अशेष-मन:-मल: पुमान्-
rid of all mind's impurities, a man
असङ्ग-विज्ञान-विशेष-वीर्यवान्
dispassionate, self-realized, specially powerful
यत्-अङ्घ्रि-मूले कृत-केतन:
in Whose feet soles, having made shelter
पुन:-न संसृतिम्
again not in birth-death
क्लेशवहाम् प्रपद्यते
torturous falls
A man, is rid of all impurities of the mind, becomes specially powerful and dispassionate and has the knowledge of Self-Realization, if he has made a shelter in the soles of the feet of The Lord. He also does not again fall in the trecherous cycle of birth and death.
तमेव यूयं भजतात्मवृत्तिभिर्मनोवच:कायगुणै: स्वकर्मभि: ।
अमायिन: कामदुघाङ्घ्रिपङ्कजं यथाधिकारावसितार्थसिद्धय: ॥३३॥
तम्-एव यूयम् भजत-
Him alone, you all worship
आत्म-वृत्तिभि:-मन:-वच:-
by self inclinations, mind, speech,
काय-गुणै: स्व-कर्मभि:
body and merits, by your own actions
अमायिन: कामदुघ-
without hypocrisy, desires providing
अङ्घ्रि-पङ्कजम् यथा-
feet lotus, as per
अधिकार-अवसित-अर्थ-सिद्धय:
right of merits, goals achieving
You all should worship Him alone Whose lotus feet are desire providing, by your self inclinations, mind, speech, body and merits, and by your actions without hypocrisy, and achive your goals as your rightful merit.
असाविहानेकगुणोऽगुणोऽध्वर: पृथग्विधद्रव्यगुणक्रियोक्तिभि: ।
सम्पद्यतेऽर्थाशयलिङ्गनामभिर्विशुद्धविज्ञानघन: स्वरूपत: ॥३४॥
असौ-इह-अनेक-गुण:-
He (The Lord) here, many properties
अगुण:-अध्वर: पृथक्-विध-
attribute less, (as a form) of sacrifice of different types
द्रव्य-गुण-क्रिया-उक्तिभि:
materials qualities, rituals and mantras,
सम्पद्यते-अर्थ-आशय-
manifests, of things qualities,
लिङ्ग-नामभि:-
actions and names
शुद्ध-विज्ञान-घन: स्वरूपत:
pure consciousness compact, from Him Self
Here, in this world, He, The Lord, though attributeless, in the form of sacrifice, manifests, with many attributes, in different types of materials and their qualities, rituals and mantras, actions and names, from His pure compact conciousness Self.
प्रधानकालाशयधर्मसंग्रहे शरीर एष प्रतिपद्य चेतनाम् ।
क्रियाफलत्वेन विभुर्विभाव्यते यथानलो दारुषु तद्गुणात्मक: ॥३५॥
प्रधान-काल-आशय-
Prakriti (matter) Time, latent desires
धर्म-संग्रहे शरीरे एष:
destiny coming together, in body, This He
प्रतिपद्य चेतनाम्
placed in the intellect
क्रिया-फलत्वेन विभु:-विभाव्यते
by the actions' fruit, The Lord, takes shape
यथा-अनल: दारुषु तत्-गुण-आत्मक:
like fire, in the woods that quality taking on
In the body created by the coming together of Prakriti, Time, latent desire, This He, The Lord places Himself in the intellect and according the fruits of the actions, takes different shapes, just as fire latent in the woods, takes the shape of the woods, (when alighted).
अहो ममामी वितरन्त्यनुग्रहं हरिं गुरुं यज्ञभुजामधीश्वरम् ।
स्वधर्मयोगेन यजन्ति मामका निरन्तरं क्षोणितले दृढव्रता: ॥३६॥
अहो मम-अमी वितरन्ति-अनुग्रहम्
Oh! to me, they distribute obligation
हरिम् गुरुम्

यज्ञ-भुजाम्-अधीश्वरम्
of the sacrifice enjoyers' Supreme Lord
स्व-धर्म-योगेन
by own duties conducting
यजन्ति मामका:
worship, my people
निरन्तरम् क्षोणि-तले
incessantly, on the earth surface
दृढ-व्रता:
with firm resolve
Oh! My subjects oblige me, when on the surface of this earth, they perform their own duties with a firm resolve , therby they incessently worship Hari The Preceptor, The Supreme Lord of those who enjoy the offerings of the sacrifice.
मा जातु तेज: प्रभवेन्महर्द्धिभिस्तितिक्षया तपसा विद्यया च ।
देदीप्यमानेऽजितदेवतानां कुले स्वयं राजकुलाद् द्विजानाम् ॥३७॥
मा जातु तेज: प्रभवेत्-
may not happen, the lustre overshadow
महत्-ऋधिभि:-तितिक्षया
of the great eminent, forbearance
तपसा विद्यया च
austerities, learning and
देदीप्यमाने-अजित-देवतानाम्
shining, Lord Vishnu's devotees
कुले स्वयम् राज-कुलात्
in the race themselves, from the ruling race
द्विजानाम्
of The Braahmanas
May it never happen that of themselves shining, the ruling race overshadow the race of the eminent, fore bearing, observing austerities, learned Brahmanas, the devotees of Lord Vishnu.
ब्रह्मण्यदेव: पुरुष: पुरातनो नित्यं हरिर्यच्चरणाभिवन्दनात् ।
अवाप लक्ष्मीमनपायनीं यशो जगत्पवित्रं च महत्तमाग्रणी: ॥३८॥
ब्रह्मण्य-देव: पुरुष: पुरातन:

नित्यम् हरि:-यत्-चरण-
everyday Shree Hari, whose feet
अभिवन्दनात् अवाप लक्ष्मीम्-
worshipping, achieved Laxmi
अनपायनीम् यश: जगत्-पवित्रम्
the constant fame in world pure
च महत्तम-अग्रणी:
and of the exalted the leading
It is by the worship of the feet of the Brahmanas, taking them as gods, everyday, that the Primary Person Shree Hari achieved the constant Laxmi, and a world purifiying fame and the leadership of the exalted.
यत्सेवयाशेषगुहाशय: स्वराड् विप्रप्रियस्तुष्यति काममीश्वर: ।
तदेव तद्धर्मपरैर्विनीतै: सर्वात्मना ब्रह्मकुलं निषेव्यताम् ॥३९॥
यत्-सेवया-अशेष-गुहाशय:
by whose service, in all hearts dwelling
स्वराड् विप्र-प्रिय:-तुष्यति
independent, Brahmanas' fond of is satisfied
कामम्-ईश्वर:
very much The Lord
तत्-एव तत्-धर्म-परै:-
that only His devotion inclined,
विनीतै: सर्वात्मना
dedicated, by whole and soul
ब्रह्म-कुलम् निषेव्यताम्
Braahmana race adore
The independent Lord, dwelling in all hearts, Who is fond of the Braahmanas, is very much satisfied by the service of the Braahmanas. You who are inclined to devotion and are dedicated, with the whole soul, adore the Braahmana race.
पुमाँल्लभेतानतिवेलमात्मन: प्रसीदतोऽत्यन्तशमं स्वत: स्वयम् ।
यन्नित्यसम्बन्धनिषेवया तत: परं किमत्रास्ति मुखं हविर्भुजाम् ॥४०॥
पुमान्-लभेत-अनति-वेलम्-
a person gains, shortly
आत्मन: प्रसीदत:-
mind purified
अत्यन्त-शमम्
everlasting peace,
स्वत: स्वयम्
on its own
यत्-नित्य
by everyday
सम्बन्ध-निषेवया
keeping in touch and serving
तत: परम्
from (Brahmanas) that more high
किम्-अत्र-अस्ति
what here is
मुखम् हवि:-भुजाम्
mouth for the (sacrificial) offering's takers
Who is a more appropriate reciever of the offerings of the sacrifices, than the Braahmanas? By constantly keeping in touch with them and serving them every day, man's mind is purified shortly and he gains the everlasting peace of beatitude.
अश्नात्यनन्त: खलु तत्त्वकोविदै: श्रद्धाहुतं यन्मुख इज्यनामभि: ।
न वै तथा चेतनया बहिष्कृते हुताशने पारमहंस्यपर्यगु: ॥४१॥
अश्नाति-अनन्त:
enjoys, The immortal Lord
खलु तत्त्व-कोविदै:
only by the Truth Knowers
श्रद्धा-हुतम् यत्-मुख
with reverence oblate, in whose mouths
इज्य-नामभि:
by sacrificial names
न वै तथा
not indeed like that
चेतनया बहिष्कृते
of consciousness devoid
हुत-आशने
oblate in the fire
पारमहंस्य-पर्यगु:
of the Upanishads the Sole
The Immortal Lord, Who is the Sole theme of the Upanishads, enjoys the oblations poured with reverence in the mouths of the Brahmanas, by the knowers of The Truth, in the names of gods, honoured in a sacrifice, but does not enjoy the oblations poured in the fire, by those devoid of consciousness, and are interested only in Self Realization.
यद्ब्रह्म नित्यं विरजं सनातनं श्रद्धातपोमङ्गलमौनसंयमै: ।
समाधिना बिभ्रति हार्थदृष्टये यत्रेदमादर्श इवावभासते ॥४२॥
यद्-ब्रह्म नित्यम्
who (the Braahmanas) always
विरजम् सनातनम्
the pure, eternal (Vedas)
श्रद्धा-तप:-मङ्गल-
by reverence, austerities, purities,
मौन-संयमै:
keeping speechless, and self-control
समाधिना बिभ्रति
and concentration hold (in their minds)
ह-अर्थ-दृष्टये
indeed for The Truth to seek
यत्र-इदम्-आदर्श:
wherein this (universe) in a mirror
इव-अवभासते
like is seen
The Brahmanas are the ones who always by reverence, austerities, purities, keeping speechless, with self-control and concentration of the mind, for the purpose of seeking the Truth, retain in their minds, the pure and eternal Vedas, wherein this universe is seen as if in a mirror.
तेषामहं पादसरोजरेणुमार्या वहेयाधिकिरीटमायु: ।
यं नित्यदा बिभ्रत आशु पापं नश्यत्यमुं सर्वगुणा भजन्ति ॥४३॥
तेषाम्-अहम् पाद-सरोज-रेणुम्-
of their, I, feet lotus dust
आर्या:
O honourable Ones!
वहेय-अधि-किरीटम्-आयु:
will carry on the crown, lifelong
यम् नित्यदा बिभ्रत
which always carrying
आशु पापम् नश्यति-
soon sins are destroyed
अमुम् सर्व-गुणा: भजन्ति
and him all virtues seek
O Honourable Ones! The dust of their lotus feet, I will carry on my crown, life-long. One who carrys that, all his sins are soon destroyed and all the virtues seek him.
गुणायनं शीलधनं कृतज्ञं वृद्धाश्रयं संवृणते नु सम्पद: ।
प्रसीदतां ब्रह्मकुलं गवां च जनार्दन: सानुचरश्च मह्यम् ॥४४॥
गुण-अयनम् शील-धनम्
the repository of virtues, rich of character
कृतज्ञम् वृद्ध-आश्रयम्
grateful, to the elders devoted
संवृणते नु सम्पद:
woos indeed fortunes
प्रसीदताम् ब्रह्मकुलम्
may be pleased the Braahmana race,
गवाम् च जनार्दन:
and the bovine, and Lord Janaardana
सानुचर:-च मह्यम्
along with the devotees, on me
All fortunes woo the person who is the repository of virtues, is rich of character, is gratefull, and is a devotee of the elders. May the race of the Braahmanas and the bovine and also Lord Janardana along with His devotees, be pleased on me.
मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
इति ब्रुवाणं नृपतिं पितृदेवद्विजातय: ।
तुष्टुवुर्हृष्टमनस: साधुवादेन साधव: ॥४५॥
इति ब्रुवाणम् नृपतिम्
this, to the saying king
पितृ-देव-द्विजातय:
the manes, gods, Braahmanas
तुष्टुवु:-हृष्ट-मनस:
praised happy minded
साधु-वादेन साधव:
with appreciating words, the sages
As the king said this, the manes, gods, Braahmanas, and the sages, with happy minds praised him with appreciating words.
पुत्रेण जयते लोकानिति सत्यवती श्रुति: ।
ब्रह्मदण्डहत: पापो यद्वेनोऽत्यतरत्तम: ॥४६॥
पुत्रेण जयते लोकान्-इति
through son wins (higher) worlds this
सत्यवती श्रुति:
true is of the Vedas
ब्रह्म-दण्ड-हत: पाप:
by Braahmana's curse hit, sinful
यत्-वेन:-अत्यतरत्-तम:
that Vena, crossed hell
This saying of the Vedas is true, that through the son one wins over higher worlds. It is so, as the sinful Vena, hit by the curse of the Braahmana, crossed over hell, (through you).
हिरण्यकशिपुश्चापि भगवन्निन्दया तम: ।
विविक्षुरत्यगात्सूनो: प्रह्लादस्यानुभावत: ॥४७॥
हिरण्यकशिपु:-च-अपि
Hiranyakashipu and also
भगवन्-निन्दया तम:
by Lord's blasphemy, hell
विविक्षु:-अत्यगात्-सूनो:
wanting to enter, overcame, by son
प्रह्लादस्य-अनुभावत:
Prahalaad's influence
Hiranyakashipu also was about to enter the hell, because of blespheming The Lord, but he escaped it by the influence of the good deeds of his son Prahalaada.
वीरवर्य पित: पृथ्व्या: समा: सञ्जीव शाश्वती: ।
यस्येदृश्यच्युते भक्ति: सर्वलोकैकभर्तरि ॥४८॥
वीरवर्य पित: पृथ्व्या:
O foremost of the warriors! O father of the Earth!
समा: सञ्जीव शाश्वती:
till years, may live endless
यस्य-ईदृशी-अच्युते भक्ति:
whose such, in the Immortal Lord devotion
सर्व-लोक-एक-भर्तरि
all worlds' one Ruler
O foremost of the warriors, O father of the Earth! May you live for endless years, you, whose devotion is such in the one Ruler of all the worlds, The Immortal Lord.
अहो वयं ह्यद्य पवित्रकीर्ते त्वयैव नाथेन मुकुन्दनाथा: ।
य उत्तमश्लोकतमस्य विष्णोर्ब्रह्मण्यदेवस्य कथां व्यनक्ति ॥४९॥
अहो वयम् हि-अद्य
Ah! We indeed today
पवित्र-कीर्ते: त्वया-एव
of pure fame by you only
नाथेन मुकुन्द-नाथा:
as ruler, Mukunda's devotees
य: उत्तम-श्लोकतमस्य
who, of the foremost of the highly famous
विष्णो:-ब्रह्मण्य-देवस्य
Vishnu, of the Braahmanas the votary
कथाम् व्यनक्ति
stories spread
Ah! Today, indeed, we the devotees of Mukunda are blessed, by you our Ruler of pure fame, the stories of the foremost of the highly famous and the votary of the Braahmana's, Vishun's stories are spread.
नात्यद्भुतमिदं नाथ तवाजीव्यानुशासनम् ।
प्रजानुरागो महतां प्रकृति: करुणात्मनाम् ॥५०॥
न-अति-अद्भुतम्-इदम्
not very strange this
नाथ तव-आजीव्य-अनुशासनम्
O lord!, your dependents' directing
प्रजा-अनुराग: महताम्
of subjects' love, is the exalted's
प्रकृति: करुण-आत्मनाम्
nature, of compassionate heart
O lord! It is not very strange that you instruct your subjects, as it is the nature of the exalted with compassionate hearts to love their subjects.
अद्य नस्तमस: पारस्त्वयोपासादित: प्रभो ।
भ्राम्यतां नष्टदृष्टीनां कर्मभिर्दैवसंज्ञितै: ॥५१॥
अद्य न:-तमस: पार:-
today, we from hell across
त्वया-उपासादित: प्रभो
by you are led, O Lord!
भ्राम्यताम् नष्ट-दृष्टीनाम्
wandering (in transmigration), of lost judgement
कर्मभि:-दैव-संज्ञितै:
by (past) actions, destiny named
O Lord! Today we are lead across hell by you, we who had lost our judgement, and who were wandering in transmigration of birth and death, and by our past actions named as destiny.
नमो विवृद्धसत्त्वाय पुरुषाय महीयसे ।
यो ब्रह्म क्षत्रमाविश्य बिभर्तीदं स्वतेजसा ॥५२॥
नम: विवृद्ध-सत्त्वाय
Salutation to the pure Saatvic
पुरुषाय महीयसे
person exalted
य: ब्रह्म क्षत्रम्-आविश्य
who The Braahmanas and the Kshatriyas inspiring
बिभर्ति-इदम् स्व-तेजसा
protects this universe by own energy
Salutations to you the exalted person, having pure Saatvic qualities, who inspires the Braahmanas and the Kshatriyas, thereby protecting this universe by your own energy.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्या संहितायां चतुर्थस्कन्धे एकविंशोऽध्याय: ॥२१॥
Thus ends the twenty-first discourse in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
