विदुर उवाच -
Vidura said -
ये त्वयाभिहिता ब्रह्मन् सुता प्राचीनबर्हिष: ।
ते रुद्रगीतेन हरिं सिद्धिमापु: प्रतोष्य काम् ॥१॥
ये त्वया-अभिहिता: ब्रह्मन्
those (that) by you were mentioned, O holy sage!
सुता: प्राचीनबर्हिष:
sons of Praacheenabarhi
ते रुद्र-गीतेन हरिम्
they through Rudra's hymn, Shree Hari
सिद्धिम्-आपु: प्रतोष्य काम्
merits achieved, pleasing, which
O Holy sage! Those sons of Praacheenabarhi whom you have mentioned, they, by sing the Rudra hymn for Shree Hari, and having pleased Him, which merits did they achieve?
किं बार्हस्पत्येह परत्र वाथ कैवल्यनाथप्रियपार्श्ववर्तिन: ।
आसाद्य देवं गिरिशं यदृच्छया प्रापु: परं नूनमथ प्रचेतस: ॥२॥
किम् बार्हस्पत्य-इह
what, O Maitreya! (pupil of Brihaspati), here,
परत्र वा-अथ कैवल्यनाथ
hereafter or then, from Bhagavaan Naarayana's
प्रिय पार्श्ववर्तिन:
favourite grace winning
आसाद्य देवम् गिरिशम्
having secured Lord Shiva
यदृच्छया प्रापु: परम्
eventually obtained the supreme object
नूनम्-अथ प्रचेतस:
surely then the Prachetas
O Brihaspati's pupil Maitreya! Having won and secured the grace of Bhagavaan Naarayana's favourite, Lord Shiva, and surely having obtained the supreme object, beatitude, what else did the Prachetas get, here and hereafter?
मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
प्रचेतसोऽन्तरुदधौ पितुरादेशकारिण: ।
जपयज्ञेन तपसा पुरञ्जनमतोषयन् ॥३॥
प्रचेतस:-अन्त:-उदधौ
the Prachetas, inside the ocean
पितु:-आदेश-कारिण:
father's command followers
जप-यज्ञेन तपसा
by repeating (the Rudra Geetaa) sacrifice and austerities
पुरञ्जनम्-अतोषयन्
Lord Hari pleased
The Prachetas, who carried out their father's command, pleased and propitiated Lord Hari, by the sacrifice of repeating the Rudra Mantra in the waters of the ocean and by other austerities.
दशवर्षसहस्रान्ते पुरुषस्तु सनातन: ।
तेषामाविरभूत्कृच्छ्रं शान्तेन शमयन् रुचा ॥४॥
दश-वर्ष-सहस्र-अन्ते
ten years thousand at the end
पुरुष:-तु सनातन:
The Person indeed Eternal
तेषाम्-आविरभूत्-कृच्छ्रम्
for them appeared, agony (by austerities)
शान्तेन शमयन् रुचा
by (His) placid form soothing by effulgence
At the end of ten thousand years, The Eternal Person, Shree Hari, appeared before them, soothing their agony caused by the austerities, by the effulgence of His placid form.
सुपर्णस्कन्धमारूढो मेरुशृङ्गमिवाम्बुद: ।
पीतवासा मणिग्रीव: कुर्वन् वितिमिरा दिश: ॥५॥
सुपर्ण-स्कन्धम्-आरूढ:
Gaduda's shoulders mounted on
मेरु-शृङ्गम्-इव-अम्बुद:
Meru mountain's peak, like the clouds
पीत-वासा: मणि-ग्रीव:
in yellow garments , Kaustubha gem on the neck
कुर्वन् वितिमिरा: दिश:
rendering devoid of darkness the directions
Mounted on the shoulders of Gaduda, like clouds mounted on the peak of Mount Meru, dressed in yellow garments, wearing the Kaustubha gem on His neck, He made the quarters devoid of darkness.
काशिष्णुना कनकवर्णविभूषणेन भ्राजत्कपोलवदनो विलसत्किरीट: ।
अष्टायुधैरनुचरैर्मुनिभि: सुरेन्द्रैरासेवितो गरुडकिन्नरगीतकीर्ति: ॥६॥
काशिष्णुना कनक-वर्ण-
by brightly shining golden hued
विभूषणेन भ्राजत्-कपोल
ornaments adorned cheeks and
वदन: विलसत्-किरीट:
face, wearing a crown
अष्ट-आयुधै:-अनुचरै:-मुनिभि:
with eight weapons, attendents, sages,
सुरेन्द्रै:-आसेवित:
gods waited upon
गरुड-किन्नर गीत-कीर्ति:
Gaduda as a Kinner singing the glory
His cheeks, the whole face shone with brilliance with the golden hue of the ornaments He adorned. He was wearing a glorious crown. He was waited upon by His eight weapons, attendents, sages and gods, and Gaduda as a Kinner sang His glory .
पीनायताष्टभुजमण्डलमध्यलक्ष्म्या स्पर्धच्छ्रिया परिवृतो वनमालयाऽऽद्य: ।
बर्हिष्मत: पुरुष आह सुतान् प्रपन्नान् पर्जन्यनादरुतया सघृणावलोक: ॥७॥
पीन-आयत-अष्ट-भुज-मण्डल-
rounded long eight arms the space
मध्य-लक्ष्म्या स्पर्धत्-श्रिया
in the middle with Lakshmi's competing splendour
परिवृत: वन-मालया-आद्य:
encircled by sylvan flower garlands, The Ancient
बर्हिष्मत: पुरुष: आह सुतान्
to, of Barhishman, The Person said to the sons
प्रपन्नान् पर्जन्य-नाद-रुतया
prostrating, with clouds rumbling (like deep) voice
सघृण-अवलोक:
merciful look
The Ancient Person's eight rounded and long arms adorned the space. He was encircled by a garland of sylvan flowers which competed with the splendour of Laxmi. He said to the prostating sons of Barhishmaan in a voice deep as the rumbling of the clouds and a merciful look.
श्री भगवान् उवाच -
The Lord said -
वरं वृणीध्वं भद्रं वो यूयं मे नृपनन्दना: ।
सौहार्देनापृथग्धर्मास्तुष्टोऽहं सौहृदेन व: ॥८॥
वरम् वृणीध्वम् भद्रम् व:
boon choose, Blessed be you!
यूयम् मे नृपनन्दना:
you all from Me, O princes!
सौहार्दे-अपृथक्-धर्मा:
in amity same vows following
तुष्ट:-अहम् सौहृदेन व:
pleased am I, by affection of you (people)
O princes! May you be blessed! You may choose and seek any boon from me. You all follow the same vows of religion with amity. I am pleased by your mutual affection.
योऽनुस्मरति सन्ध्यायां युष्माननुदिनं नर: ।
तस्य भातृष्वात्मसाम्यं तथा भूतेषु सौहृदम् ॥९॥
य:-अनुस्मरति सन्ध्यायाम्
he (who) remembers, at dusk
युष्मान्-अनुदिनम् नर:
you people, everyday man
तस्य भातृषु-आत्म-साम्यम्
his among brothers, like self equal (feeling)
तथा भूतेषु सौहृदम्
and for beings friendliness
A man who remembers you all everyday at dusk, will have a self like feeling for his brothers and a feeling of friendliness for all beings.
ये तु मां रुद्रगीतेन सायं प्रात: समाहिता: ।
स्तुवन्त्यहं कामवरान्दास्ये प्रज्ञां च शोभनम् ॥१०॥
ये तु माम् रुद्र-गीतेन
those who Me, by Rudra Geetaa
सायम् प्रात: समाहिता:
evening and morning, with concentration
स्तुवन्ति-अहम् काम-वरान्-
glorify, I, desired boons
दास्ये प्रज्ञाम् च शोभनम्
will confer, intellect and brilliant
Those who glorify Me by singing Rudra Geeta with concentration, every evening and morning, I will confer the desired boons on them and also give them brilliant intellect.
यद्यूयं पितुरादेशमाग्रहीष्ट मुदान्विता: ।
अथो व उशती कीर्तिर्लोकाननु भविष्यति ॥११॥
यत्-यूयम् पितु:-आदेशम्-
that you have father's commands
अग्रहीष्ट मुदा-अन्विता:
carried out with joy
अथ: व: उशती कीर्ति:-
therefore your bright fame
लोकान्-अनु भविष्यति
in the worlds will pervade
That you all have carried out the commands of your father with joy, your bright fame will pervade all the worlds.
भविता विश्रुत: पुत्रोऽनवमो ब्रह्मणो गुणै: ।
य एतामात्मवीर्येण त्रिलोकीं पूरयिष्यति ॥१२॥
भविता विश्रुत: पुत्र:-
will be illustrious son
अनवम: ब्रह्मण: गुणै:
not less than Brahmaa in virtues
य: एताम्-आत्म-वीर्येण
who this, with his progeny
त्रिलोकीम् पूरयिष्यति
the three worlds fills
You will have an illustrious son who will be no less in virtues than Brahmaa. He will fill these three worlds with his progeny.
कण्डो: प्रम्लोचया लब्धा कन्या कमललोचना ।
तां चापविद्धां जगृहुर्भूरुहा नृपनन्दना: ॥१३॥
कण्डो: प्रम्लोचया लब्धा
Kandu's (the sage's), (through) Pramalocha got
कन्या कमल-लोचना
daughter lotus eyed
ताम् च-अपविद्धाम्
her and having been abandoned
जगृहु:-भूरुहा: नृपनन्दना:
took on the trees, O Princes!
O Princes! The sage Kundu got a lotus-eyed daughter through Pramalocha. She was abondoned by her mother, so the trees took over her charge.
क्षुत्क्षामाया मुखे राजा सोम: पीयूषवर्षिणीम् ।
देशिनीं रोदमानाया निदधे स दयान्वित: ॥१४॥
क्षुत्-क्षामाया: मुखे राजा सोम:
hunger oppressed, in the mouth, King (of herbs) moon
पीयूष-वर्षिणीम्
nectar dripping
देशिनीम् रोदमानाया निदधे
index finger, in the crying put
स: दयान्वित:
he compassionately
In the mouth of the girl who was oppressed with hunger and was crying, the King of herbs, The Moon put his index finger dripping with nectar.
प्रजाविसर्ग आदिष्टा: पित्रा मामनुवर्तता ।
तत्र कन्यां वरारोहां तामुद्वहत माचिरम् ॥१५॥
प्रजा-विसर्ग आदिष्टा:
to children beget, commanded
पित्रा माम्-अनुवर्तता
by your father, Me devoted to
तत्र कन्याम् वरारोहाम्
that girl, of lovely hips
ताम्-उद्वहत मा-अचिरम्
her marry without delay
Your father, devoted to Me, commanded you to marry that girl with lovely hips, without delay for the purpose of begetting children.
अपृथग्धर्मशीलानां सर्वेषां व: सुमध्यमा ।
अपृथग्धर्मशीलेयं भूयात्पत्न्यर्पिताशया ॥१६॥
अपृथक्-धर्म-शीलानाम्
not different (same) vows observing
सर्वेषाम् व: सुमध्यमा
of all of you, slender waisted (she)
अपृथक्-धर्मशीला-इयम्
non different (same) vows observing
भूयात्-पत्नी-अर्पिताशया
may be wife dedicated
You all observe the same vows. She, the slender waisted will also observe the same vows. May she be a dedicated wife to you all.
दिव्यवर्षसहस्राणां सहस्रमहतौजस: ।
भौमान् भोक्ष्यथ भोगान् वै दिव्यांश्चानुग्रहान्मम ॥१७॥
दिव्य-वर्ष-सहस्राणाम्
celestial years thousands'
सहस्रम्-अहत-औजस:
thousand, of undiminished strength
भौमान् भोक्ष्यथ भोगान्
earthly will enjoy pleasures
वै दिव्यान्-अनुग्रहात्-मम
indeed heavenly, by grace of Me
By My grace, undiminished in strength, you surely will enjoy the earthly and heavenly pleasures for a million celestial years.
अथ मय्यनपायिन्या भक्त्या पक्वगुणाशया: ।
उपयास्यथ मद्धाम निर्विद्य निरयादत: ॥१८॥
अथ मयि-अनपायिन्या
then, in Me, by unceasing
भक्त्या पक्व-गुण-आशया:
devotion, having burnt impurities of the heart
उपयास्यथ मत्-धाम
will ascend to My abode
निर्विद्य निरयात्-अत:
retrieving from hell like pleasures
By your unceasing devotion in Me, having burnt the impurities of your heart, you will ascend to My abode, retreaving from the hell like pleasures.
गृहेष्वाविशतां चापि पुंसां कुशलकर्मणाम् ।
मद्वार्तायातयामानां न बन्धाय गृहा मता: ॥१९॥
गृहेषु-आविशताम् च-अपि
householders' life living, and also
पुंसाम् कुशल-कर्मणाम्
the people, of dedicated (to Me) actions
मत्-वार्ता यातयामानाम्
My talks, indulging into for hours
न बन्धाय गृहा: मता:
not for bondage those householders are recognized
Also those people who are living a householder's life, if they indulge in My talks for hours together, and are dedicated to Me, their home life is not recognized as a bondage.
नव्यवद्धृदये यज्ज्ञो ब्रह्मैतद्ब्रह्मवादिभि: ।
न मुह्यन्ति न शोचन्ति न हृष्यन्ति यतो गता: ॥२०॥
नव्य-वत्-हृदये यत्-ज्ञ:
new like, in the heart, in that, The All-Knowing
ब्रह्म-एतद्-ब्रह्म-वादिभि:
Brahma this is, by Brahman speaking of
न मुह्यन्ति न शोचन्ति
are not illusioned, are not grieved
न हृष्यन्ति यत:गता:
do not give in to joy, whence reaching
Those who listen to My glories, spoken of by the speakers of Brahman, they, in their hearts know Me as Brahman, The All-Knowing, in new aspects. Once they are there, they are not given to illusions, grief or joy.
मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
एवं ब्रुवाणं पुरुषार्थभाजनं जनार्दनंप्राञ्जलय: प्रचेतस: ।
तद्दर्शनध्वस्ततमोरजोमला गिरागृणन् गद्गदया सुहृत्तमम् ॥२१॥
एवम् ब्रुवाणम् पुरुषार्थ-
as (He was) saying, of all the objects of pursuit
भाजनम् जनार्दनम्-
The Goal, Lord Vishnu
प्राञ्जलय: प्रचेतस:
with joined palms the Prachetas
तत्-दर्शन-ध्वस्त-
by His sight were rid
तम:-रज:-मला:
of Tamas and Rajas impurities
गिरा-अगृणन् गद्गदया
by voice said choked
सुहृत्तमम्
to The greatest friend
As, Lord Vishnu, The Goal of all the objects of human pusuit, and The greatest Friend, was saying thus, the Prachetas, with joined palms, who were rid of all Tamas and Rajas impurities by His sight, said in a choked voice …
प्रचेतस ऊचु: -
Prachetas said -
नमो नम: क्लेशविनाशनाय निरूपितोदारगुणाह्वयाय ।
मनोवचोवेगपुरोजवाय सर्वाक्षमार्गैरगताध्वने नम: ॥२२॥
नम: नम: क्लेश-विनाशनाय
Salutation, salutations, to The Afflictions' Remover!
निरूपित-उदार गुण-आह्वयाय
declared ( by Vedas) of excellent virtues and names
मन:-वच:-वेग-पुर:-जवाय
mind and speech speed more quick
सर्व-अक्ष-मार्गै:-
by all senses ways
अगत-अध्वने नम:
unreachable (Whose) approach, Salutations
Salutations and salutations to You, The Remover of afflictions! Whose excellent virtues and names are declared by the Vedas, Whose speed is more than the speed of the mind or speech, Whose approach is unreachable by the path of the senses, salutations!
शुद्धाय शान्ताय नम: स्वनिष्ठाय मनस्यपार्थं विलसद्द्वयाय ।
नमो जगत्स्थानलयोदयेषु गृहीतमायागुणविग्रहाय ॥२३॥
शुद्धाय शान्ताय नम:
to The Pure, The Serene, Hail
स्वनिष्ठाय मनसि-अपार्थम्
in Own (nature) established, in mind the false
विलसत्-द्वयाय
projecting duality
जगत्-स्थान-लय-उदयेषु
for creation's preservation, dissolution creation
गृहीत-माया-गुण-विग्रहाय
assume Maayaa's Guna's forms
Hail to You, The Pure, The Serene, Established in Your own essential nature. Due to the existence of the mind there appears duality in You. For the purpose of creation, preservation, and dissolution of the world You assume the various forms through the gunas of Maayaa.
नमो विशुद्धसत्त्वाय हरये हरिमेधसे ।
वासुदेवाय कृष्णाय प्रभवे सर्वसात्वताम् ॥२४॥
नम: विशुद्ध-सत्त्वाय
Salutations (to You) of pure Sattva
हरये हरिमेधसे
to Shree Hari, of transmigration the curtailer
वासुदेवाय कृष्णाय
to Vaasudeva, to Krishna,
प्रभवे सर्वसात्वताम्
to The Lord, of all devotees
Oh Shree Hari! You are of pure Sattva, you cut off the bondages of transmigration, You are the Lord of all devotees, O Krishna! O Vaasudeva! Salutations to You.
नम: कमलनाभाय नम: कमलमालिने ।
नम: कमलपादाय नमस्ते कमलेक्षणे ॥२५॥
नम: कमल-नाभाय
obesciences to (You) The lotus naveled
नम: कमल-मालिने
obesciences to (You) adorned with lotus garland
नम: कमल-पादाय
obesciences to (You) lotus like feet
नमस्ते कमल-ईक्षणे
obesciences to You the lotus eyed
Obescience to You from Whose navel a lotus sprung. Obescience to You Who are adorned with garland of lotus flowers. Obescience to You Whose feet resemble the lotus. Obescience to You Whose eyes are like the lotuses.
नम: कमलकिञ्जल्कपिशङ्गामलवाससे ।
सर्वभूतनिवासाय नमोऽयुङ्क्ष्महि साक्षिणे ॥२६॥
नम: कमल-किञ्जल्क-
Hail to lotus dust like
पिशङ्ग-अमल-वाससे
yellow stainless garments (dressed in)
सर्व-भूत-निवासाय
all beings present in
नम:-अयुङ्क्ष्महि साक्षिणे
salutation we do to The witness of all
Hail to You Who are dressed in stainless garments, yellow like the pollen dust of the lotus flower, Who has His abode in all beings, and we salute to The Witness to all.
रूपं भगवता त्वेतदशेषक्लेशसंक्षयम् ।
आविष्कृतं न: क्लिष्टानां किमन्यदनुकम्पितम् ॥२७॥
रूपम् भगवता तु-एतत्-
form by The Lord, indeed this
अशेष-क्लेश-संक्षयम्
endless miseries putting an end to
आविष्कृतम् न: क्लिष्टानाम्
revealed, for us the afflicted
किम्-अन्यत्-अनुकम्पितम्
what of other favour (is wanted?)
The form that the Lord has revealed for us, the afflicted, puts an end to endless miseries. What other favour can be asked for?
एतावत्त्वं हि विभुभिर्भाव्यं दीनेषु वत्सलै: ।
यदनुस्मर्यते काले स्वबुद्ध्याभद्ररन्धन ॥२८॥
एतावत्-त्वम् हि विभुभि:-
this much You indeed, by the masters
भाव्यम् दीनेषु वत्सलै:
done, (Who is) in the poor affectionate
यत्-अनुस्मर्यते काले
that reminds, in time
स्वबुद्ध्या-अभद्र-रन्धन
by ones own mind, inauspiciousness Eradicator
This much, by You the masters, Who are affectionate to the poor should be done, is to remind them of their own minds in time of the Eradicator of inauspiciousness.
येनोपशान्तिर्भूतानां क्षुल्लकानामपीहताम् ।
अन्तर्हितोऽन्तर्हृदये कस्मान्नो वेद नाशिष: ॥२९॥
येन-उपशान्ति:-भूतानाम्
by which (remembering You), solace to the beings
क्षुल्लकानाम्-अपि-ईहताम्
insignificant even desires
अन्तर्हित:-अन्त:-हृदये
Inner Controller within the heart
कस्मात्-न: वेद न-आशिष:
how of our know not the desires
By that remembering of You brings solace to the most insignificant beings, within whose hearts, You as the Inner Contoller are seated. How then do You not know of the desires, desired by us?
असावेव वरोऽस्माकमीप्सितो जगत: पते ।
प्रसन्नो भगवान् येषामपवर्गगुरुर्गति: ॥३०॥
असौ-एव वर:-अस्माकम्-
this alone boon, by us
ईप्सित: जगत: पते
is sought, O Lord of the Universe!
प्रसन्न: भगवान् येषाम्-
pleased The Lord, in that, (You are)
अपवर्ग-गुरु:-गति:
the beatitude Teacher and the Goal
O Lord of the Universe! This alone is the boon saught by us , that The Lord be pleased with us always, in that, that You are the preceptor of beatitude and also the Goal.
वरं वृणीमहेऽथापि नाथ त्वत्परत: परात् ।
न ह्यन्तस्त्वद्विभूतीनां सोऽनन्त इति गीयसे ॥३१॥
वरम् वृणीमहे अथ-अपि नाथ
boon will seek we, then also, O Lord!
त्वत्-परत: परात्
From You, (Who are) beyond the ultimate (Prakriti)
न हि-अन्त:-त्वत्-विभूतीनाम्
not indeed is limit to Your glories
स:-अनन्त: इति गीयसे
You 'Ananta', thus are extolled
Yet, O Lord! We do seek a boon of You, Who are beyond the ultimate (Prakriti). There is no limit to Your glories, that is why You are extalled by the name of 'Ananta'.
पारिजातेऽञ्जसा लब्धे सारङ्गोऽन्यन्न सेवते ।
त्वदङ्घ्रिमूलमासाद्य साक्षात्किं किं वृणीमहि ॥३२॥
पारिजाते-अञ्जसा लब्धे
Paarijaata (having) easily got
सारङ्ग:-अन्यन्-न सेवते
the bee another, does not resort to
त्वत्-अङ्घ्रि-मूलम्-आसाद्य
Your feet soles having reached
साक्षात्-किम् किम् वृणीमहि
directly, what all (do we) seek (as a boon)
When a bee easily gets the excess to the flower of celestial tree Paareejaata, it does not resort to the flower of another tree. We, having directly reached the soles of Your feet, what other boons do we seek from You?
यावत्ते मायया स्पृष्टा भ्रमाम इह कर्मभि: ।
तावद्भवत्प्रसङ्गानां सङ्ग: स्यान्नो भवे भवे ॥३३॥
यावत्-ते मायया स्पृष्टा:
so long by Your Maayaa dominated we,
भ्रमाम: इह कर्मभि:
are illusioned, in this world by actions prompted
तावत्-भवत्-सङ्गानाम्
till then Your devotees
सङ्ग: स्यात्-न: भवे भवे
company may be ours, in every birth
So long as, prompted by our actions, we are illusioned by the dominance of Your deluding Maayaa, till then, may we have the company of Your devotees in every birth.
तुलयाम लवेनापि न स्वर्गं नापुनर्भवम् ।
भगवत्सङ्गिसङ्गस्य मर्त्यानां किमुताशिष: ॥३४॥
तुलयाम लवेन-अपि
to compare with half a second
न स्वर्गम् न-अपुनर्भवम्
not heaven, not beatitude
भगवत्-सङ्गि-सङ्गस्य
Lord's devotees' company
मर्त्यानाम् किमुत-आशिष:
of mortals, what of and blessings
Heaven or beatitude also do not stand anywhere in comparison to even half a second of the company of the Lord's loving devotees, what of the blessings saught by mortals.
यत्रेड्यन्ते कथा मृष्टास्तृष्णाया: प्रशमो यत: ।
निर्वैरं यत्र भूतेषु नोद्वेगो यत्र कञ्चन ॥३५॥
यत्र-ईड्यन्ते कथा: मृष्टा:-
where are sung stories lovely
तृष्णाया: प्रशम: यत:
quench the thirst (of desires) which
निर्वैरम् यत्र भूतेषु
no animosity where with beings
न-उद्वेग: यत्र कञ्चन
nor strife where any
In the company of the devotees, the lovely stories of the Lord are sung, where the thirst of all desires is quenched, where there is no enimosity or strife among the beings.
यत्र नारायण: साक्षाद्भगवान्न्यासिनां गति: ।
संस्तूयते सत्कथासु मुक्तसङ्गै: पुन: पुन: ॥३६॥
यत्र नारायण: साक्षात्-
where, Naarayana's, directly
भगवान्-न्यासिनाम् गति:
The Lord, of the recluses, The Goal
संस्तूयते सत्-कथासु
glories are sung, in the beautiful stories
मुक्त-सङ्गै: पुन: पुन:
by the free of attachment, again and again
There, in the beautiful stories, again and again, the glories are directly sung by those who are free of attachment, of the ultimate goal of the recluses, Lord Naaraayana.
तेषां विचरतां पदभ्यां तीर्थानां पावनेच्छया ।
भीतस्य किं न रोचते तावकानां समागम: ॥३७॥
तेषाम् विचरताम् पदभ्याम्
of their roaming on foot
तीर्थानाम् पावन-इच्छया
the sacred places, to purify desiring
भीतस्य किम् न रोचते
(the person) who is afraid of, how does not please
तावकानाम् समागम:
them meeting
The meeting with such devotees of Yours, who roam on foot the sacred place with the intention of purifying them, how can not, meeting with them, please the person who is afraid of transmigration.
वयं तु साक्षाद्भगवन् भवस्य प्रियस्य सख्यु: क्षणसङ्गमेन ।
सुदुश्चिकित्स्यस्य भवस्य मृत्योर्भिषक्तमं त्वाद्य गतिं गता: स्म ॥३८॥
वयम् तु साक्षात्-भगवन्
we indeed directly, O Lord!
भवस्य प्रियस्य सख्यु:
Lord Shiva's beloved friend's
क्षण-सङ्गमेन
by a moment's association
सुदुश्चिकित्स्यस्य
the incurable malady
भवस्य मृत्यो: भिषक्तमम्
of birth and death, the Physician
तु-अद्य गतिम् गता: स्म
certainly today, resorted to
O Lord! Through a moment's association with Your beloved friend Shiva, we have directly attained refuge in You, the best Physician for the incurable malady of birth and death.
यन्न: स्वधीतं गुरव: प्रसादिता विप्राश्च वृद्धाश्च सदानुवृत्त्या ।
आर्या नता: सुहृदो भ्रातरश्च सर्वाणि भूतान्यनसूययैव ॥३९॥
यत्-न: स्वधीतम्
that by us is studied well
गुरव: प्रसादिता: विप्रा:-च
teachers have been pleased, Braahmanas and
वृद्धा:-च सदा-अनुवृत्त्या
elders and, always by waiting upon
आर्या: नता: सुहृद: भ्रातर:-च
noble men greeted, friends and brothers and
सर्वाणि भूतानि-अनसूयया-एव
all beings, without jealousy only
In that, we have studied well, have pleased the teachers, Braahmanas and elders, by constantly waiting upon them, by greeting noble people, friends and brothers and also all beings without jealousy.
यन्न: सुतप्तं तप एतदीश निरन्धसां कालमदभ्रमप्सु ।
सर्वं तदेतत्पुरुषस्य भूम्नो वृणीमहे ते परितोषणाय ॥४०॥
यत्-न: सुतप्तम् तप: एतत्-
that we have practiced austerities these
ईश निरन्धसाम्
O Lord! without food
कालम्-अदभ्रम्-अप्सु
for time long in water
सर्वम् तत्-एतत्-पुरुषस्य
all that this, for The Person
भूम्न: वृणीमहे
All Pervading, we seek, may be
ते परितोषणाय
for Your pleasure
O Lord! That we have practiced austerities, without food standing in water for a long time, may all that be to please You, O All Pervading Person! This is what we seek as a boon.
मनु: स्वयम्भूर्भगवान् भवश्च येऽन्ये तपोज्ञान विशुद्धसत्त्वा: ।
अदृष्टपारा अपि यन्महिम्न: स्तुवन्त्यथो त्वाऽऽत्मसमं गृणीम: ॥४१॥
मनु: स्वयम्भू:-भगवान् भव:-
Manu, Swaayambhuva, Lord Shiva
च ये-अन्ये तप:-ज्ञान
and those others by austerities and wisdom
विशुद्ध-सत्त्वा:
of purified intellects
अदृष्ट-पारा: अपि
unseen the end also
यत्-महिम्न: स्तुवन्ति-
of whose glories sing praises,
अथ त्वाम्-आत्म-समम् गृणीम:
so, You we, as per our ability, will sing
Your that unfathomable glory which is sung of by Manu, Swaayambhu, and Lord Shiva and also by others who have purified their intellects by asceticism and austerities, we, who have not seen the end, will also sing of that glory, according to our capability.
नम: समाय शुद्धाय पुरुषाय पराय च ।
वासुदेवाय सत्त्वाय तुभ्यं भगवते नम: ॥४२॥
नम: समाय शुद्धाय

Person Supreme and
वासुदेवाय सत्त्वाय
for Vasudeva Untainted
तुभ्यम् भगवते नम:
for You The Lord salutations
Salutations to The Pure Supreme Person, Who is the same everywhere. Salutations for You The Untainted Lord Vaasudeva.
मैत्रेय उवाच -
इति प्रचेतोभिरभिष्टुतो हरि: प्रीतस्तथेत्याह शरण्यवत्सल: ।
अनिच्छतां यानमतृप्तचक्षुषां ययौ स्वधामानपवर्गवीर्य: ॥४३॥
इति प्रचेतोभि:-अभिष्टुत:
like this by the Prachetas extolled
हरि: प्रीत:-तथा-इति-
Shree Hari pleased, 'May it be so' thus,
आह शरण्य-वत्सल:
said, to the shelter seeking affectionate
अनिच्छताम् यानम्-
not wanting Him to go
अतृप्त-चक्षुषाम् ययौ
the unsated eyed, went
स्वधाम-अनपवर्ग-वीर्य:
to His abode, of infinite might
The Prachetas thus extolled Shree Hari, Who is affectionate to those who seek His shelter, Who was pleased with them and said 'May it be so'. Even though they did not want Him to go, for their eyes were not sated by His sight, He of infinite might went away to His abode.
अथ निर्याय सलिलात्प्रचेतस उदन्वत: ।
वीक्ष्याकुप्यन्द्रुमैश्छन्नां गां गां रोद्धुमिवोच्छ्रितै: ॥४४॥
अथ निर्याय सलिलात्-
then coming out of the water,
प्रचेतस: उदन्वत:
The Prachetas of the ocean,
वीक्ष्य-अकुप्यन्-द्रुमै:-
seeing, were enraged (that) by the trees
छन्नाम् गाम् गाम्
covered the land, way
रोद्धुम्-इव-उच्छ्रितै:
obstructed (to heaven) as if growing
Then, when the Prachetas came out of the waters of the ocean, they were enraged to see that the trees had grown and covered the earth, as if to obstruct the way to heaven.
ततोऽग्निमारुतौ राजन्नमुञ्चन्मुखतो रुषा ।
महीं निर्वीरुधं कर्तुं संवर्तक इवात्यये ॥४५॥
तत:-अग्नि-मारुतौ राजन्-
then, fire and wind, O King Vidura!
अमुञ्चन्-मुखत: रुषा
let out from the mouth in anger
महीम् निर्वीरुधम् कर्तुम्
the earth without vegetation to render,
संवर्तक इव-अत्यये
Kaalaagni like (by Rudra is released) at dissolution
Then they released fire and wind from their mouths in anger, to render the earth without vegetation, just as Rudra releases Kaalaagni at the time of dissolution.
भस्मसात्क्रियमाणांस्तान्द्रुमान् वीक्ष्य पितामह: ।
आगत: शमयामास् पुत्रान् बर्हिष्मतो नयै: ॥४६॥
भस्मसात्-क्रियमाणान्-तान्-
to ashes reduced those
द्रुमान् वीक्ष्य पितामह:
trees seeing Brahmaa (grandfather)
आगत: शमयामास् पुत्रान्
came, and pacified the sons
बर्हिष्मत: नयै:
of Barhishman, by wise words
Brahmaa saw the trees being reduced to ashes, He came and pacified the sons of Barhishmaan with wise words.
तत्रावशिष्टा ये वृक्षा भीता दुहितरं तदा ।
उज्जह्रुस्ते प्रचेतोभ्य उपदिष्टा: स्वयम्भुवा ॥४७॥
तत्र-अवशिष्टा: ये वृक्षा:
there, the remaining those trees
भीता: दुहितरम् तदा
afraid, daughter then
उज्जह्रु:-ते प्रचेतोभ्य:
offered they to the Prachetas
उपदिष्टा: स्वयम्भुवा
advised by self-born (Brahmaa)
There, the remaining trees, in terror, they offered their daughter to the Prachetas, on the advice of the self-born Brahmaa.
ते च ब्रह्मण आदेशान्मारिषामुपयेमिरे ।
यस्यां महदवज्ञानादजन्यजनयोनिज: ॥४८॥
ते च ब्रह्मण: आदेशात्-
they and by Brahmaa's command
मारिषाम्-उपयेमिरे
Maarishaa married
यस्याम् महत्-अवज्ञानात्-
in whom Shiva's insult having done
अजनि-अजन-योनिज:
was born Brahmaa's son (Daksha)
And they, the Prachetaas, by Brahmaa's command married Maarishaa, from whom Brahmaa's son Daksha was again born, having insulted Lord Shiva.
चाक्षुषे त्वन्तरे प्राप्ते प्राक्सर्गे कालविद्रुते ।
य: ससर्ज प्रजा इष्टा: स दक्षो दैवचोदित: ॥४९॥
चाक्षुषे तु-अन्तरे प्राप्ते
Chaakshusha, indeed the Manvantara having dawned,
प्राक्-सर्गे काल-विद्रुते
the previous creation, in time having ended
य: ससर्ज प्रजा: इष्टा:
who begot progeny chosen
स: दक्ष: दैव-चोदित:
he Daksha, by God instigated
He was that Daksha, indeed, who instigated by God, begot progeny of his choice, at the dawn of the Chakshu Manvantara, the previous creation having been dissolved in time.
यो जायमान: सर्वेषां तेजस्तेजस्विनां रुचा ।
स्वयोपादत्त दाक्ष्याच्च कर्मणां दक्षमब्रुवन् ॥५०॥
य: जायमान: सर्वेषाम्
who, having born, of everyone
तेज:-तेजस्विनाम् रुचा
the splendour, of the resplendent, by brilliance
स्वया-उपादत्त दाक्ष्यात्-च
own overshadowed by efficiency
कर्मणाम् दक्षम्-अब्रुवन्
in rituals, Daksha was called
Just as he was born, he overshadowed the splendour of the resplendent beings by his own brilliance, being efficient in the rituals, he was called Daksha.
तं प्रजासर्गरक्षायामनादिरभिषिच्य च ।
युयोज युयुजेऽन्यांश्च स वै सर्वप्रजापतीन् ॥५१॥
तम् प्रजा-सर्ग-रक्षायाम्-
him, in progeny creating and preserving,
अनादि:-अभिषिच्य च
Brahmaa, installed and (others)
युयोज युयुजे-अन्यान्-च
appointed and charged others and
स: वै सर्व-प्रजापतीन्
he indeed all the Prajaapatis
Brahmaa installed him in extending the progeny and preserving it, and indeed, appointed and charged other Prajaapatis also.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां चतुर्थस्कन्धे त्रिंश: अध्याय: ॥३०॥
Thus ends the thirtieth discourse in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata Puraana.
