श्री शुक उवाच -
Shri Shuka said -
भरतस्तु महाभागवतो यदा भगवतावनितलपरिपालनाय सञ्चिन्तितस्तदनुशासनपुर: पञ्चजनीं विश्वरूपदुहितरमुपयेमे ॥१॥


भरत:-तु महा-भागवत:
Bharat, indeed, the great devotee
यदा भगवता-
when by The Lord (Rishabha)
अवनितल-परिपालनाय
for the earth's protection
सञ्चिन्तित:-तत्-अनुशासनपुर:
was coroneted, His commands obeying
पञ्चजनीम्
Panchajanee
विश्वरूप-दुहितरम्-उपयेमे
Vishwaroopa's daughter, married

When the great devotee Bharat was appointed by The Lord Rishabha to rule over the earth, eager to carry out His commands, Bharata married Panchajanee, the daughter of Vishwaroopa.


तस्यामु ह वा आत्मजान् कर्त्स्न्येनानुरूपानात्मन: पञ्च जनयामास भूतादिरिव भूतसूक्ष्माणि ॥२॥


तस्याम्-उ ह वा आत्मजान्
from her indeed or sons
कर्त्स्न्येन-अनुरूपान्-आत्मन:
absolutely same as self
पञ्च जनयामास
five begot
भूत-आदि:-इव
the elements' source (Ahankaara) like
भूत-सूक्ष्माणि
the elements subtle

From her, indeed he begot five sons, absolutely similar to himself, just as the source of the elements, Ahankaara produces the five subtle elements.


सुमतिं राष्ट्रभृतं सुदर्शनमावरणं धूमकेतुमिति ।

अजनाभं नामैतद्वर्षं भारतमिति यत् आरभ्य व्यपदिशन्ति ॥३॥


सुमतिम् राष्ट्रभृतम् सुदर्शनम्-
Sumati, Raashtrabhrit, Sudarshana,
आवरणम् धूमकेतुम्-इति
Aavarana, Dhoomaketu thus
अजनाभम् नाम-
Ajanaabha name
एतद्-वर्षम् भारतम्-इति
this sub-division Bhaarata this
यत् आरभ्य व्यपदिशन्ति
from when starting, is called

Their names were Sumati, Raashtrabhrit, Sudarshana, Aavarna, Dhoomaketu. Starting from when, this land Ajanaabha, the subdivision (of Jamboodwipa) is called Bhaarata.


स बहुविन्महीपति: पितृपितामहवदुरुवत्सलतया स्वे स्वे कर्मणि वर्तमाना: प्रजा: स्वधर्ममनुवर्तमान: पर्यपालयत् ॥४॥


स: बहुवित्-महीपति:
he, the scholar, the king
पितृ-पितामह-वत्-
father and grandfather like
उरु-वत्सलतया
with immense fatherly love
स्वे स्वे कर्मणि
in own works
वर्तमाना: प्रजा:
engaged, the public
स्व-धर्मम्-अनुवर्तमान:
in his own duties engaged
पर्यपालयत्
duly protected

The king, Bharata, a great scholar, like his father and grandfather, strictly adhehering to his own duties, with immense fatherly love protected the people and engaged them in their own work.


ईजे च भगवन्तम् यज्ञक्रतुरूपं क्रतुभिरुच्चावचै: श्रद्धयाऽऽहृताग्निहोत्र दर्शपूर्णमासचातुर्मास्यपशुसोमानां प्रकृतिविकृतिभिरनुसवनं चातुर्होत्रविधिना ॥५॥


ईजे च भगवन्तम्
worshipped and The Lord
यज्ञ-क्रतु-रूपम्
as Yagya, and Kratu forms
क्रतुभि:-उच्च-अवचै:
with sacred rites, big and small
श्रद्धया-आहृत-अग्निहोत्र
with reverence in the form of Agnihotra,
दर्श-पूर्णमास-चातुर्मास्य
Darsha, Poornamaasa, Chaatrumaasya,
पशु-सोमानाम् प्रकृति-विकृतिभि:-
of Pashusomas, by Prakriti and Vikrit
अनुसवनम् चातुर्होत्र-विधिना
in proper time, according to the Chaturhotra system

He worshipped The Lord in His forms of Yagya and Kratu, performing them with reverence, and with the big and small sacred rites, such as the Agnihotra, Darsha, Poornamaasa, Chaaturmaasya, Pashusomaa, both by Prakriti and Vikriti, according to the Chaaturhotra system, in their proper times.


सम्प्रचरत्सु नानायागेषु विरचिताङ्गक्रियेष्वपूर्वं यत्तत्क्रियाफलं धर्माख्यं परे ब्रह्मणि यज्ञपुरुषे सर्वदेवतालिङ्गनां मन्त्राणामर्थनियामकतया साक्षात्कर्तरि परदेवतायां भगवति वासुदेव एव भावयमान आत्मनैपुण्यमृदितकषायो हवि: ष्वध्वर्युभिर्गृह्यमाणेषु स यजमानो यज्ञभाजो देवांस्तान् पुरुषावयवेष्वभ्यध्यायत् ॥६॥


सम्प्रचरत्सु नाना-यागेषु
(when were) being conducted various sacrifices
विरचित-अङ्ग-क्रियेषु-अपूर्वम्
with attention to special rites particular
यत्-तत्-क्रिया-फलम्
which that the actions reward
धर्म-आख्यम्
Dharma named
परे ब्रह्मणि यज्ञ-पुरुषे
to the Supreme Brahman Yagya Person,
सर्व-देवता-लिङ्गनाम्
of all the gods subtle body
मन्त्राणाम्-अर्थ-नियामकतया
of the Mantra's the meaning holding
साक्षात्-कर्तरि पर-देवतायाम्
to the direct Doer, The Supreme Deity
भगवति वासुदेवे एव भावयमान:
Lord Vaasudeva only dedicating to
आत्म-नैपुण्य-मृदित-
by own expertise rejoicing in
कषाय: हवि:षु-अध्वर्युभि:-
passions in oblations by the Adhvaryus
गृह्यमाणेषु स: यजमान:
being accepted, that sacrificer
यज्ञभाज: देवान्-तान्
the sacrifice deities those
पुरुष-अवयवेषु-अभ्यध्यायत्
in The supreme Persons limbs, contemplated on

When the various sacrifices were performed, with attention to the special rites particular to them, their particular rewards of being performed, called Dharma, the sacrificer Bharat, dedicated them all to the Supreme Brahman, The Yoga Person, who is the subtle body of all the gods and is the personification of the Mantras' meanings, the direct Doer of the sacrifice, The Supreme Diety Lord Vaasudeva Himself. By his own expertise of sagacity he juiced all his passion as oblations with the Adhvaryus, and he contemplated on the dieties accepting them, as the limbs of the Supreme Person.


एवं कर्मविशुद्ध्या विशुद्धसत्त्वस्यान्तर्हृदयाकाशशरीरे ब्रह्मणि भगवति वासुदेवे महापुरुषरूपोपलक्षणे श्रीवत्सकौस्तुभवनमालारिदरगदादिभिरुपलक्षिते निजपुरुषहृल्लिखितेनात्मनि पुरुषरूपेण विरोचमान उच्चैस्तरां भक्तिरनुदिनमेधमानरयाजायत ॥७॥


एवम् कर्म-विशुद्ध्या
thus by the actions pure
विशुद्ध-सत्त्वस्य-
thoroughly purified mind
अन्त:-हृदय-आकाश-शरीरे
within the hearts' space body
ब्रह्मणि भगवति वासुदेवे
in Brahman Lord Vaasudeva
महा-पुरुष-रूप-उपलक्षणे
with the Supreme Person's form's marks
श्रीवत्स-कौस्तुभ-वनमाला-अरि-दर-
Shri-Vatsa, Kaustubha, sylvan flowers' garland, discus, conch
गदा-आदिभि:-उपलक्षिते
mace and other denoting
निज-पुरुष-हृल्लिखितेन-
own devotees in the hearts inscribed
आत्मनि पुरुष-रूपेण
in himself in The Person's form
विरोचमान: उच्चै:-तराम् भक्ति:-
shining, highly increased devotion
अनुदिनम्-एधमान-रया-अजायत
everyday increasing with speed attained

Thus, his mind was thoroughly purified by his pure actions. Within his body, in the space of his heart, Brahman, The Lord Vaasudeva, The Supreme Person with all the marks of the Supreme Person, the Shri-vats, Kaustubha, sylvan flowers' garland, discus, conch and mace and others, was inscribed as is on the hearts of His devotees. Shining in his own heart in the form of the Primary Person, his mature devotion attained the speed which increased every day.


एवं वर्षायुतसहस्रपर्यन्तावसितकर्मनिर्वाणावसरोऽधिभुज्यमानं स्वतनयेभ्यो रिक्थं पितृपैतामहं यथादायं विभज्य स्वयंसकलसम्पन्निकेतात्स्वनिकेतात् पुलहाश्रमं प्रवव्राज ॥८॥


एवम् वर्ष-अयुत-सहस्र-पर्यन्त-
thus years ten millions' end
अवसित-कर्म-निर्वाण-
exhausted the actions' conclusion
अवसर:-अधिभुज्यमानम्
period of (royal fortune) enjoying
स्व-तनयेभ्य:
among his own sons
रिक्थम् पितृ-पैतामहम्
the fortune hereditary
यथा-दायम् विभज्य
proportionately divided
स्वयम्-सकल-सम्पन्--निकेतात्-
himself, of all prosperity the abode
स्व-निकेतात् पुलह-आश्रमम् प्रवव्राज
from own residence, to Pulaha hermitage proceeded

Thus, till the end of ten million years, uptill when the period of his enjoying the royal fortune was exhausted, he proportionately divided his hereditary fortune among his sons. He himself, from his residence, which was the abode of all prosperity, proceeded to the Pulaha hermitage.


यत्र ह वाव भगवान् हरिरद्यापि तत्रत्यानां निजजनानां वात्सल्येन संनिधाप्यत इच्छारूपेण ॥९॥


यत्र ह वाव
where, it is said
भगवान् हरि:-अद्य-अपि
Lord Hari, today also
तत्रत्यानाम् निज-जनानाम्
living there His own devotees
वात्सल्येन संनिधाप्यत
by paternal love impelled, reveals (Himself)
इच्छारूपेण
in desired form

It is said that there, even today, Lord Hari driven by His paternal love, reveals Himself for His devotees in the forms desired by them.


यत्राश्रमपदान्युभयतो नाभिभिर्दृषच्चक्रैश्चक्रनदी नाम सरित्प्रवरा सर्वत: पवित्रीकरोति ॥१०॥च्


यत्र-आश्रम-पदानि उभयत:
where, the hermitage's areas, on both sides,
नाभिभि:-दृषत्-चक्रै:-
by the navel like looking circles
चक्रनदी नाम सरित्-प्रवरा
Chakra river named, the river esteemed
सर्वत: पवित्री-करोति
from all sides sanctifies

Where, the esteemed river named Chakranadi (Gandaki), flows in a circular form looking like the navel on both sides of the hermitage, sanctifying the whole area.


तस्मिन् वाव किल स एकल: पुलहाश्रमोपवने विविधकुसुमकिसलयतुलसिकाम्बुभि: कन्दमूलफलोपहारैश्च समीहमानो भगवत आराधनं विविक्त उपरतविषयाभिलाष उपभृतोपशम: परां निर्वृतिमवाप ॥११॥


तस्मिन् वाव किल स: एकल:
in that, indeed, certainly he all alone
पुलह-आश्रम-उपवने
in Pulaha hermitage's garden
विविध-कुसुम-किसलय-
with various flowers, tender leaves,
तुलसिका-अम्बुभि: कन्द-मूल-
Tulsika leaves, waters, bulbs, roots,
फल-उपहारै:-च समीहमान:
fruits offerings and performing
भगवत: आराधनम् विविक्त उपरत
Lord's worship, of all rid
विषय-अभिलाष: उपभृत-उपशम:
sense pleasures, developed great peace
पराम् निर्वृतिम्-अवाप
supreme gratification derived

There, in the garden of that Pulaha hermitage, indeed, he certainly all alone, performed the worship of The Lord with the offerings of various flowers, tender leaves, Tulsika leaves, waters, bulbs, roots and fruits. He was rid of cravings of all sense pleasures and derived supreme gratification.


तयेत्थमविरतपुरुषपरिचर्यया भगवति प्रवर्धमानानुरागभरद्रुतहृदयशथिल्य: प्रहर्षवेगेनात्मन्युद्भिद्यमानरोमपुलककुलक औत्कण्ठ्यप्रवृत्तप्रणयवाष्पनिरुद्धावलोकनयन एवं निजरमणारुणचरणारविन्दानुध्यानपरिचितभक्तियोगेन परिप्लुतपरमाह्लादगम्भीरहृदयह्रदावगाढधिषणस्तामपि क्रियमाणां भगवत्सपर्याम् न सस्मार ॥१२॥


तया-इत्थम्-अविरत
by him like this constantly
पुरुष-परिचर्यया भगवति प्रवर्धमान-
The Person's service in The Lord ever increasing
अनुराग-भर-द्रुत-हृदय-शैथिल्य:
love filled hastily, heart was benumbed
प्रहर्ष-वेगेन-आत्मनि-उद्भिद्यमान-
with exceptional speed, on his body arose
रोम-पुलक-कुलक औत्कण्ठ्य-प्रवृत्त-
hair on their ends, by longing resulting
प्रणय-वाष्प-निरुद्ध-
love tears obstructed
अवलोक-नयन एवम् निज-रमण-
bedimmed eyes, thus own Beloved's
अरुण-चरण-अरविन्द-अनुध्यान-
red feet lotus, meditating on
परिचित-भक्ति-योगेन
related with devotion yoga
परिप्लुत-परम-आह्लाद-
over-flowing in great delight
गम्भीर-हृदय-ह्रद-
deep heart lake
अवगाढ-धिषण:-
drowned consciousness
ताम्-अपि क्रियमाणाम्
that also activity
भगवत्-सपर्याम् न सस्मार
of Lord's worship, did not remember

Thus by constantly worshipping The Person, he was hastily filled with love for The Lord and his heart was benumbed. The hair on his body stood on their ends, with the exceptional speed of his longing, resulted in his eyes bedimmed with tears of love obstructing the vision. Thus he meditated on the red lotus feet of his Beloved, relating to the devotional overflow of great delight in the lake of his heart, in which his consciousness was drowned and he forgot to perform even the activity of worship of The Lord.


इत्थं धृतभगवद्व्रत ऐणेयाजिनवाससानुसवनाभिषेकार्द्रकपिशकुटिलजटाकलापेन च विरोचमान: सूर्यर्चा भगवन्तं हिरण्मयं पुरुषमुज्जिहाने सूर्यमण्डलेऽभ्युपतिष्ठन्नेतदु होवाच - ॥१३॥


इत्थम् धृत-भगवत्-व्रत
in this manner, holding on to Lord's vow
ऐणेय-अजिन-वाससा-
deer skin wearing
अनुसवन-अभिषेक-
three times bathing
आर्द्र-कपिश-कुटिल-
wet browned knotted
जटा-कलापेन च विरोचमान:
matted hair and shining
सूर्य-ऋचा भगवन्तम् हिरण्मयम्
Sun's prayers The Lord resplendent
पुरुषम्-उज्जिहाने
Supreme Person rising
सूर्य-मण्डले-अभ्युपतिष्ठन्-
in the Sun's orbit manifest
एतत्-उ ह-उवाच
this indeed said

In this manner, he, dressed in deer skin, with his hair wet, curly brown and matted by bathing three times a day, held on the vow to propitiate The Supreme Person Lord Naaraayan, with the prayers for the Sun, as the Sun manifested in the orbit of The sun, and said thus ,...


परोरज: सवितुर्जातवेदो देवस्य भर्गो मनसेदं जजान ।

सुरेतसाद: पुनराविश्य चष्टे हसं गृध्राणं नृषद्रिङ्गिरामिम: ॥१४॥


परोरज: सवितु:-जातवेद:
beyond Rajas (and Tamas) of Sun, dispenser of fruits of actions
देवस्य भर्ग:
The Lord's Light
मनस-इदम् जजान
by thought this (universe) evolved
सुरेतसा-अद:
with its power of consciousness, in it
पुन:-आविश्य चष्टे
again entering protects
हसम् गृध्राणम्
the Jeeva, seeking (protection)
नृषद्रिम्-गिराम्-इम:
propels intellect this

We resort to that Light, which is beyond Rajas and Tamas, the Light of the Sun, which dispenses the fruits of our actions, the Light of The Lord, which by His mere thought evolved this universe, by its power of consciousness, and again entering it, protects the protection seeking jeeva, and propells this intellect.


इति श्रीमद्भगवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायाम् पञ्चमे स्कन्धे सप्तम: अध्याय: ॥७॥


Thus ends the seventh discourse, forming part of the story of Emperor Bharat, dealing (mainly) with the worship of the Lord, in Book Five of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
