Oh How painful, that I was waylaid from following the path of the self-realized souls. I had given up all attachment and had retreated to the solitrary holy forest, placing my self into my own self and that in The Lord Vaasudeva, the Soul of all beings, by hearing his deeds, singing His praises, worshipping and remembering Him, and thus was engaged all the time. Again, in no time, suddenly my stupid mind with all concentration, started to flow altogather towards the young of the deer.

Like this, thus disguising his remorse, he forsook his mother dear and again, from Kaalanjara, went to the site of The Lord, which inspires self-control, and is the favourite resort of the hermits, the hermitages of Pulastya and Pulaha, known as Shaalagraama.

There, in that hermitage also, awaiting his time for the exhaustion of the cause of his birth as a deer, he lived in seclusion (self-company), very afraid of attachment and subsisting on dry leaves, straws and shrubs. And eventually when the time of death arrived, he cast off his deer body by half submerging it in the holy water of the river.

Thus ends the eighth discourse, forming part of the story of Bharat, in Book Five of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
