श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
त एवं शंसतो धर्मं वच: पत्युरचेतस: ।
नैवागृह्णन् भयत्रस्ता: पलायनपरा नृप ॥१॥
ते एवम् शंसत: धर्मम्
they thus advised virtuous
वच: पत्यु:-अचेतस:
words of the master, not heeding
न-एव-अगृह्णन् भय-त्रस्ता:
not also took it, by fear frantic
पलायन-परा: नृप
to flee intent on, O King!
O King! They thus advised by their master, preaching virtue to them, did not take the advice nor did they pay any heed to it, as they were frantic with fear and intent on flight.
वशीर्यमाणां पृतनामासुरीमसुरर्षभ: ।
कालानुकूलैस्त्रिदशै: काल्यमानामनाथवत् ॥२॥
वशीर्यमानाम् पृतनाम्-
the fleeing army of
आसुरीम्-असुरर्षभ:
the Asuras, of the demons the foremost
काल-अनुकूलै:-त्रिदशै:
time according to, by the gods
काल्यमानाम्-अनाथ-वत्
put to flight, master-less like
The foremost of the demons, Vritraasura, saw the demon's army fleeing, as though master-less, put to flight and shattered by the gods, in accordance with the time,….
दृष्ट्वातप्यत संक्रुद्ध इन्द्रशत्रुरमर्षित: ।
तान् निवार्यौजसा राजन् निर्भर्त्स्येदमुवाच ह ॥३॥
दृष्ट्वा-अतप्यत संक्रुद्ध:
seeing was agitated, enraged
इन्द्र-शत्रु:-अमर्षित:
Indra's enemy was indignant
तान् निवार्य-औजसा राजन्
them warding off mightily, O King!
निर्भर्त्स्य-इदम्-उवाच ह
reprimanding this, said indeed
O King! Indra's enemy Vritraasura was indignant when he saw this and was agitated and enraged, warding them off with his might, and reprimanding them he indeed said this...
किं व उच्चरितैर्मातुर्धावद्भि: पृष्ठतो हतै: ।
न हि भीतवध: श्लाघ्यो न स्वर्ग्य: शूरमानिनाम् ॥४॥
किम् व: उच्चरितै:-मातु:-
what of you, the excreta of mother
धावद्भि: पृष्ठत: हतै:
fugitives, from the back struck
न हि भीत-वध: श्लाघ्य:
not indeed, of the frightened slaughter desireable
न स्वर्ग्य: शूरमानिनाम्
not heaven gaining, for the brave considering
Of what use are you the fugitives, who are the excreta of the mother, because to strike the terror-stricken from the back is neither desireable nor conducive to gaining the heaven for those who consider themselves as brave.
यदि व: प्रधने श्रद्धा सारं वा क्षुल्लका हृदि ।
अग्रे तिष्ठति मात्रं मे न चेद् ग्राम्यसुखे स्पृहा ॥५॥
यदि व: प्रधने श्रद्धा:
if of you people, in battle is interest
सारम् क्षुल्लका हृदि
courage a little bit, in the heart
अग्रे तिष्ठति मात्रम् मे
in front stand, once of me
न चेत् ग्राम्य-सुखे स्पृहा
not if, in sense pleasures inclination
If you people have interest in the battle, or have a little bit of courage in the heart, or if you do not have an inclination to sensuous pleasures, then, for once stand in front of me.
एवं सुरगणान् क्रुद्धो भीषयन् वपुषा रिपून् ।
व्यनदत् सुमहाप्राणो येन लोका विचेतस: ॥६॥
एवम् सुरगणान् क्रुद्ध:
thus the gods' hosts, enraged
भीषयन् वपुषा रिपून्
threatening, by (his) body the enemies
व्यनदत् सुमहाप्राण:
roared, of great strength
येन लोका: विचेतस:
by which the people fainted
Thus enraged, he threatened the hosts of god's by his fierce body, and he of immense strength roared by which people fainted.
तेन देवगणा: सर्वे वृत्रविस्फोटनेन वै ।
निपेतुर्मूर्च्छिता भूमौ यथैवाशनिना हता: ॥७॥
तेन देव-गणा: सर्वे
by that, the gods' hosts all
वृत्र-विस्फोटनेन वै
by Vritraasura's roar, indeed
निपेतु:-मूर्च्छिता: भूमौ
fell unconscious, on the ground
यथा-एव-अशनिना हता:
like just by lightning struck
By that roar of Vritraasura, all the hosts of gods, fell on the ground unconscious, just as if struck by lightning.
ममर्द् पद्भ्यां सुरसैन्यमातुरं निमीलिताक्षं रणरङ्गदुर्मद: ।
गां कम्पयन्नुद्यतशूल ओजसा नालं वनं यूथपतिर्यथोन्मद: ॥८॥
ममर्द पद्भ्याम् सुर-सैन्यम्-
trampled with the feet, the gods army
आतुरम् निमीलित-अक्षम्
fearful, with closed eyes
रण-रङ्ग-दुर्मद:
for warfare passionate, unrepressable
गाम् कम्पयन्-उद्यत-शूल:
the earth making to shake, taking up the spear,
ओजसा नालम् वनम्
with strength, lotus bed
यूथपति:-यथा-उन्मद:
elephant lord, just as in fury
He, the unrepressable, Vritraasura, passionate for warfare, took up the spear and made the earth shake with his strength and trampled with his feet, the fearful army of the gods with their eyes closed, just as a lordly elephant would trample a bed of lotuses.
विलोक्य तं वज्रधरोऽत्यमर्षित: स्वशत्रवेऽभिद्रवते महागदाम् ।
चिक्षेप तामापततीं सुदु:सहां जग्राह वामेन करेण लीलया ॥९॥
विलोक्य तम् वज्रधर:-
seeing him, the wielder of the thunderbolt, (Indra)
अत्यमर्षित: स्व-शत्रवे-
with great indignation, on own enemy
अभिद्रवते महागदाम्
hurled a huge mace
चिक्षेप ताम्-आपततीम्
hurled that, rushing
सुदु:सहाम् जग्राह
the formidable caught
वामेन करेण लीलया
by left hand sportingly
The wielder of the thunderbolt, Indra, with great indignation saw him coming, and hurled a huge mace at his own enemy. He, the demon sportingly caught that rushing formidable weapon with his left hand.
स इन्द्रशत्रु: कुपितो भृशंतया महेन्द्रवाहं गदयोग्रविक्रम: ।
जघान कुम्भस्थल उन्नदन्मृधे तत्कर्म सर्वे समपूजयन्नृप ॥१०॥
स: इन्द्र-शत्रु: कुपित:
he, Indra's enemy enraged
भृशम् तया महेन्द्र-वाहम्
badly, by that, (mace) Indra's mount
गदया-उग्र-विक्रम:
by the mace, of terrible prowess
जघान कुम्भस्थले
struck on the head
उन्नदन्-मृधे तत्-कर्म
and roared in the battle, that act
सर्वे समपूजयन्-नृप
all admired O King!
O King! He, Indra's enemy, of terrible prowess, was badly enraged and roared in the battle, and with that mace struck Indra's mount, the elephant Airaawata on the head. That feet of his was greatly appreciated by all on the battle field.
ऐरावतो वृत्रगदाभिमृष्टो विघूर्णितोऽद्रि: कुलिशाहतो यथा ।
अपासरद् भिन्नमुख: सहेन्द्रो मुञ्चन्नसृक् सप्तधनुर्भृशार्त: ॥११॥
ऐरावत: वृत्र-गदा-
Airaawata, by Vritra's mace
अभिमृष्ट: विघूर्णित:-अद्रि
smashed, reeled a mountain
कुलिश-आहत: यथा
by lightning struck just as
अपासरद् भिन्न-मुख:
retreated broken head
सह-इन्द्र: मुञ्चन्-असृक्
with Indra, spitting blood
सप्त-धनु:-भृश-आर्त:
to twenty-eight cubits, greatly distressed
Airaawata, with his head smashed by Vritra's mace, was very much distressed, and reeled like a mountain struck by lightning, and retreated with his broken head, to a distance of twenty eight cubits, with his mount Indra on his back, spitting out blood.
न सन्नवाहाय विषण्णचेतसे प्रायुङ्क्त भूय: स गदां महात्मा ।
इन्द्रोऽमृतस्यन्दिकराभिमर्शवीतव्यथक्षतवाहोऽवतस्थे ॥१२॥
न सन्-अवाहाय
did not becoming unconscious
विषण्ण-चेतसे प्रायुङ्क्त
dejected in mind, applied
भूय: स: गदाम् महात्मा
again, he, (Vritra) the mace the noble
इन्द्र:-अमृत-स्यन्दि-
Indra, by nectar flowing
कर-अभिमर्श-वीत-
hand touching, rid
व्यथ-क्षत-वाह:-अवतस्थे
pain wounded mount, stood in front
Because of the unconscious Airaawata, Indra was very much dejected, so, the noble Vritra, did not again apply the mace on them. Indra touched the elephant with his nectar flowing hand by which he was rid of his wounds and pain, and once again he came and stood before Vritraasura.
स तं नृपेन्द्राहवकाम्यय रिपुं वज्रायुधं भ्रातृहरणं विलोक्य ।
स्मरंश्च तत्कर्म नृषंसमंह: शोकेन मोहेन हसञ्जगाद ॥१३॥
स: तम् नृपेन्द्र-आहव-काम्यय
he, him (Indra), O King of kings! combat seeking
रिपुम् वज्र-आयुधम्
enemy, thunderbolt as weapon
भ्रातृ-हरणम् विलोक्य
brother's killer seeing
स्मरन्-च- तत्-कर्म
remembering and that deed
नृषंसम्-अंह: शोकेन
cruel sinful, by grief
मोहेन हसन्-जगाद
and infatuation, laughingly said
O King of kings! When Vritraasura saw the enemy Indra eager for a combat with the thunderbolt as a weapon, he was reminded of the cruel and sinful deed of his adversary, that of killing of his brother, and was overtaken by grief and infatuation, and laughingly said …
वृत्र उवाच -
Vritra said -
दिष्ट्या भवान् मे समवस्थितो रिपुर्यो ब्रह्महा गुरुहा भ्रातृहा च ।
दिष्ट्यानृणोऽद्याहमसत्तम त्वया मच्छूलनिर्भिन्नदृषद्धृदाचिरात् ॥१४॥
दिष्ट्या भवान्
luckily you
मे समवस्थित: रिपु:-य:
in my front are firmly standing, enemy who
ब्रह्महा गुरुहा भ्रातृहा च
is a Braahmana killer, a preceptor killer, brother killer and
दिष्ट्या-अनृण:-अद्य-अहम्-
luckily (for me) rid of debt, today I will be
असत्तम त्वया मत्-शूल-निर्भिन्न-
O most wicked one! by you, by my trident is pierced
दृषत्-हृदा-अचिरात्
stone like heart soon
O Most wicked one! Luckily you are firmly standing in front of me, the enemy who is a Braahmana killer, a preceptor killer, and a brother's killer. Luckily for me, today I will be rid of my debt towards my brother, when soon my trident will pierce your stone like heart.
यो नोऽग्रजस्यात्मविदो द्विजातेर्गुरोरपापस्य च दीक्षितस्य ।
बिश्रभ्य खड्गेन शिरांस्यवृश्चत् पशोरिवाकरुण: स्वर्गकाम: ॥१५॥
य: न:-अग्रजस्य-
who of my elder brother's
आत्मविद: द्विजाते:-गुरो:-
the self-realized, the Braahmana, the preceptor,
अपापस्य च दीक्षितस्य
of the sinless, and engaged ( on your behalf)
बिश्रभ्य खड्गेन
having confidence (in You) with a axe
शिरांसि-अवृश्चत्
heads chopped
पशो:-इव-अकरुण:
animal's like mercilessly
स्वर्ग-काम:
heaven desiring
Of my elder brother, who was a self-realized Braahmana, a sin-less preceptor, engaged by You for conducting sacrifice, having confidence in you, you are the one who chopped off his heads with an axe, like one desiring the heaven mercilessly kills an animal.
ह्रीश्रीदयाकीर्तिभिरुज्झितं त्वां स्वकर्मणा पुरुषादैश्च गर्ह्यम् ।
कृच्छ्रेण मच्छूलविभिन्नदेहमस्पृष्टवह्निं समदन्ति गृध्रा: ॥१६॥
ह्री-श्री-दया-कीर्तिभि:-
by shame, grace, compassion and glory
उज्झितम् त्वाम् स्व-कर्मणा
forsaken you, by (your) own deeds
पुरुषादै:-च गर्ह्यम्
by the human eaters also despised
कृच्छ्रेण मत्-शूल-
altogether by my trident
विभिन्न-देहम्-
shattered bodied
अस्पृष्ट-वह्मिम्
untouched by fire
समदन्ति गृध्रा:
will feast the vultures
Forsaken by shame, grace, compassion, and glory, because of your own deeds, despised even by the human eating Raakshasas, your body which will soon be shattered by my trident will be feasted upon by the vultures, untouched by fire.
अन्येऽनु ये त्वेह नृशंसमज्ञा ये ह्युद्यतास्त्रा: प्रहरन्ति मह्यम् ।
तैर्भूतनाथान् सगणान् निशातत्रिशूलनिर्भिन्नगलैर्यजामि ॥१७॥
अन्ये-अनु ये तु-इह
others followers those indeed here
नृशंसम्-अज्ञा: ये हि-
cruel and foolish, who, indeed,
उद्यत-अस्त्रा: प्रहरन्ति मह्यम्
raising the missiles, are striking me
तै:-भूतनाथान् सगणान्
by them the Bhootanaath, along with retinue
निशात-त्रिशूल-
by sharp trident
निर्भिन्न-गलै:-यजामि
with cut off throats, will propitiate
Those others of your cruel and foolish followers who have taken up missiles to strike me, I will cut off their throats with my sharp trident and propitiated the Bhootanaath and their retinue with their blood.
अथो हरे मे कुलिशेन वीर हर्ता प्रमथ्यैव शिरो यदीह ।
तत्रानृणो भूतबलिं विधाय मनस्विनां पादरज: प्रपत्स्ये ॥१८॥
अथ: हरे मे कुलिशेन
then, O Indra! me by the thunderbolt
वीर हर्ता
O Valiant One! Severing
प्रमथ्य-एव शिर: यत्-इह
shattering only the head that here
तत्र-अनृण:
then indebted still be
भूत-बलिम् विधाय
to the animals etc., oblation offering
मनस्विनाम् पाद-रज:
of the enlightened souls', feet dust
प्रपत्स्ये
will attain
Then, O Indra! In case, O Valiant One! You sever and shatter my head with the thunderbolt, I will offer it as oblation to the animals and birds, and thus rid of my debts, will attain the dust of the feet of the enlightened.
सुरेश कस्मान्न हिनोषि वज्रं पुर: स्थिते वैरिणि मय्यमोघम् ।
मा संशयिष्ठा न गदेव वज्रं स्यान्निष्फलं कृपणार्थेव याच्ञा ॥१९॥
सुरेश कस्मात्-न
O King of gods! Why do not
हिनोषि वज्रम्
strike the thunderbolt
पुर: स्थिते वैरिणि
on the in front standing foe
मयि-अमोघम्
me, the infallible
मा संशयिष्ठा:
do not doubt
न गदा-इव वज्रम्
not like the mace the thunderbolt
स्यात्-निष्फलम्
will be fruitless
कृपण-अर्थ-एव याच्ञा
from a miser money like asking for
O King of gods! Why do not you strike the unfailing thunderbolt on your foe standing before you? Do not doubt its efficacy like that of the mace. The thunderbolt will not be fruitless like the asking of money of a miser.
नन्वेष वज्रस्तव शक्र तेजसा हरेर्दधीचेस्तपसा च तेजित: ।
तेनैव शत्रुं जहि विष्णुयन्त्रितो यतो हरिर्विजय: श्रीगुणास्तत: ॥२०॥
ननु-एष: वज्र:-तव शक्र
definitely this thunderbolt yours, O Indra!
तेजसा हरे:-दधीचे:-तपसा
by the glory of The Lord, (and) by Dadhichi's asceticism
च तेजित: तेन-एव
and is glorified, by that only
शत्रुम् जहि विष्णु-यन्त्रित:
the enemy kill, by Vishnu prompted,
यत: हरि:-विजय:
where Hari is, there victory,
श्री-गुणा:-तत:
fortune, and virtues are there
O Indra! By this thunderbolt of yours which is energized by the glory of The Lord and by the asceticism of Dadhichi, and is prompted by Vishnu, kill your enemy. Where there is Hari, victory, fortune and virtues are there.
अहं समाधाय मनो यथाऽऽह सङ्कर्षणस्तच्चरणारविन्दे ।
त्वद्वज्ररंहोलुलितग्राम्यपाशो गतिं मुनेर्याम्यपविद्धलोक: ॥२१॥
अहम् समाधाय मन:
I concentrating my mind
यथा-आह सङ्कर्षण:-
as instructed by Sankarshana
तत्-चरण-अरविन्दे
in His feet lotus
त्वत्-वज्र-रंह:
by your thunderbolt's force
लुलित-ग्राम्य-पाश:
cut off sense pleasure cords
गतिम् मुने: यामि-
the state of the sage will attain
अपविद्ध-लोक:
casting off the body
I will concentrate my mind on the lotus feet of Lord Sankarshana, as instructed by him, and with the force of your thunderbolt the cord of my sense pleasure having being cut off, will attain the state of the sage.
पुंसां किलैकान्तधियां स्वकानां या: सम्पदो दिवि भूमौ रसायाम् ।
न राति यद् द्वेष उद्वेग आधिर्मद: कलिर्व्यसनं संप्रयास: ॥२२॥
पुंसाम् किल-एकान्त-धियाम्
to the people, of course, of exclusively devoted minds
स्वकानाम् या: सम्पद:
to His own people, that fortune
दिवि भूमौ रसायाम्
of the heavens, earth and subterranean regions
न राति यत् द्वेष उद्वेग
does not bestow, which (causes) hatred, fear,
आधि:-मद: कलि:-
mental anguish, arrogance, discord,
व्यसनम् संप्रयास:
suffering and toil
The lord, to His own devotees, who are exclusively devoted to Him does not bestow the riches of the heaven, earth and the subterranean region, because, they cause hatred, fear, mental anguish, arrogance, discord, suffering and toil.
त्रैवर्गिकायासविघातमस्मत्पतिर्विधत्ते पुरुषस्य शक्र ।
ततोऽनुमेयो भगवत्प्रसादो यो दुर्लभोऽऽकिञ्चनगोचरोऽन्यै: ॥२३॥
त्रै-वर्गिक-आयास-
of the three classes of efforts
विघातम्-अस्मत्-पति:-
futile our Master,
विधत्ते पुरुषस्य शक्र
renders of the Person, O Indra!
तत:-अनुमेय: भगवत्-प्रसाद:
from that is estimated, The Lord's compassion
य: दुर्लभ:-
which is difficult to attain
अकिञ्चन
by those who have nothing of their own
गोचर:-अन्यै:
and is unfathomable for others
O Indra! Our Master renders futile ours, of His people, the efforts for the achievement of the three kinds, religious merit, worldly riches, and sensuous pleasures. From this can be inferred the grace of The Lord, which is for only those who have nothing to call their own, other than Him, and which is unfathomable by others.
अहं हरे तव पादैकमूलदासानुदासो भवितानुदासो भवितास्मि भूय: ।
मन: स्मरेतासुपतेर्गुणांस्ते गृणीत वाक् कर्म करोतु काय: ॥२४॥
अहम् हरे तव पाद-
I, O Hari Your!
एकमूल-दास-अनुदास:
exclusive servant's servant
भविता-अस्मि भूय:
will become, (when I) be (born) again
मन: स्मरेत-असु-पते:-गुणान्-
(may my) mind remember, life's Lord's, the virtues
ते गृणीत वाक्
Your may take name (my) speech
कर्म करोतु काय:
actions of service will do the body
O Hari! I, will be the servant of those who are exclusively devoted to the service of Your feet, when I am born again. I will remember in my mind the virtues of The Master of the life force, my speech will utter Your names and my body will perform service to You.
न नाकपृष्ठं न च पारमेष्ठ्यं न सार्वभौमं न रसाधिपत्यम् ।
न योगसिद्धीरपुनर्भवं वा समञ्जस त्वा विरहय्य काङ्क्षे ॥२५॥
न नाक-पृष्ठम्
not the abode of Dhruva
न च पारमेष्ठ्यम्
not and realm of Brahmaa
न सार्व-भौमम्
not the sovereignty of the globe
न रसाधिपत्यम्
not the subterranean region's lordship
न योग-सिद्धी:-
not Yoga's attainments (superhuman powers)
अपुनर्भवम् वा
or Liberation from rebirth
समञ्जस त्वा
O Storehouse of Blessedness and grace, You
विरहय्य काङ्क्षे
giving up, do not desire
O Storehouse of Blessedness and grace, without You, I do not covet the abode of Dhruva, the realm of Brahmaa, the sovereignty of the globe, the subterranean region's lordship, the attainments of Yoga, i.e., the superhuman powers, or Liberation from rebirth.
अजातपक्षा इव मातरं खगा: स्तन्यं यथा वत्सतरा: क्षुधार्ता: ।
प्रियं प्रियेव व्युषितं विषण्णा मनोऽरविन्दाक्ष दिदृक्षते त्वाम् ॥२६॥
अजात-पक्षा इव मातरम् खगा:
unfledged like, mother the birds
स्तन्यम् यथा
udders (milk) like
वत्सतरा: क्षुधार्ता:
calves by hunger tormented
प्रियम् प्रिय-इव व्युषितम्
the beloved lover like, away from home
विषण्णा मन:-
desolate, (my) mind,
अरविन्द-आक्ष दिदृक्षते त्वाम्
O Lotus Eyed! to behold You
Just as the unfledged birds seek their mother bird, the hunger distressed calves seek the udders milk, and the desolate beloved seeks the lover, who is away from home, so also, my mind yearns to behold You, O Lotus-Eyed One.
ममोत्तमश्लोकजनेषु सख्यं संसारचक्रे भ्रमत: स्वकर्मभि: ।
त्वन्माययाऽऽत्मात्मजदारगेहेष्वासक्तचित्तस्य न नाथ भूयात् ॥२७॥
मम-उत्तमश्लोक-जनेषु
my, of the excellent renown's, devotees
सख्यम् संसार-चक्रे
friendship (may be), in world's whirlwind
भ्रमत: स्व-कर्मभि:
revolving, by own actions
त्वत्-मायया-आत्मा-
by Your Maayaa in self,
आत्मज-दार-गेहेषु-
offspring, wife, and in home
आसक्त-चित्तस्य
attached minded
न नाथ भूयात्
not O Lord! may be
As a result of my own actions, I revolve in the world's whirligig. May my friendship be with the devotees of The Lord of excellent renown. O Lord! May my friendship not be with those, instigated by Your Maayaa, are attached to themselves, to their offspring, to wife and home.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां षष्ठस्कन्धे वृत्रस्य इन्द्रोपदेशो नाम एकादश: अध्याय: ॥११॥
Thus ends the eleventh discourse entitled 'Vritra's teaching to Indra', in Book Six of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
