ऋषि:-उवाच -
The sage (Shree Shuka) said -
एवं जिहासुर्नृप देहमाजौ मृत्युं वरं विजयान्मन्यमान: ।

शूलं प्रगृह्याभ्यपतत् सुरेन्द्रं यथा महापुरुषं कैटभोऽप्सु ॥१॥


एवम् जिहासु:-नृप देहम्-
thus to shed, O King! the body
अजौ मृत्युम् वरम्
in battle, death preferable
विजयात्-मन्यमान:
to victory considering
शूलम् प्रगृह्य-अभ्यपतत्
trident seizing, charged
सुरेन्द्रम् यथा महापुरुषम्
at Indra, like, at The Supreme Person (Vishnu)
कैटभ:-अप्सु
Kaitabha in the waters (of deluge)

Thus, eager to shed his body in the battle field, and considering death preferable to victory, Vritra took hold of the trident and charged at Indra, as Kaitabha had charged at The Supreme Person Vishnu, in the waters of the deluge.


ततो युगान्ताग्निकठोरजिह्वमाविध्य शूलं तरसासुरेन्द्र: ।

क्षिप्त्वा महेन्द्राय विनद्य वीरो हतोऽसि पापेति रुषा जगाद ॥२॥


तत: युगान्त-अग्नि-कठोर-
then, at universe's end the flame, formidable
जिह्वम्-आविध्य शूलम्
prongs, hurled the trident
तरसा-असुरेन्द्र:
quickly the demon king
क्षिप्त्वा महेन्द्राय
threw it on Indra
विनद्य वीर: हत:-असि
roared the valiant (Vritra), 'Killed are you
पाप-इति रुषा जगाद
O wicked one!' thus, in anger exclaimed

Then, the valiant demon king, Vritraasura, hurled the trident which had formidable prongs like the flames of the fire arising at the time of universal destruction, and quickly threw it on Indra, as he exclaimed in anger, 'O wicked One! You are killed!'


ख आपतत् तद् विचलद् ग्रहोल्कावन्निरीक्ष्य दुष्प्रेक्ष्यमजातविक्लव: ।

वज्रेण वज्री शतपर्वणाच्छिनद् भुजं च तस्योरगराजभोगम् ॥३॥


खे आपतत् तत् विचलत्
in the air darting, that whirling
ग्रह-उल्का-वत्-निरीक्ष्य
the planet or meteor like seeing
दुष्प्रेक्ष्यम्-अजात-विक्लव:
the dazzling (trident), not given to being perturbed
वज्रेण वज्री शत-पर्वणा-
by thunderbolt, thunderbolt wielder, of hundred knots
अच्छिनत् भुजम् च तस्य-
cut off arm and his
उरग-राज-भोगम्
the serpent king like his prey

The thunderbolt wielder Indra saw the planet and meteor like dazzling trident whirling and darting in the air. He was not the least perturbed , and by his thunderbolt of hundred knots cut off Vritraasura's arm like the serpent king cuts off his prey.


छिन्नैकबाहु: परिघेण वृत्र: संरब्ध आसाद्य गृहीतवज्रम् ।

हनौ तताडेन्द्रमथामरेभं वज्रं च हस्तान्न्यपतन्मघोन: ॥४॥


छिन्न-एक-बाहु:
severed of one arm
परिघेण वृत्र: संरब्ध
by the mace, Vritra, enraged
आसाद्य गृहीत-वज्रम्
approached, holding the thunderbolt
हनौ-तताड-इन्द्रम्-
on the chin hit Indra and
अथ-अमरेभम्
then the celestial elephant
वज्रम् च हस्तात्-
thunderbolt from the hand
न्यपतत्-मघोन:
fell of Indra

Vritra, with his one arm severed was enraged and hit the thunderbolt wielder Indra on the chin with the mace, and also the celestial elephant. The thunderbolt fell from Indra's hand.


वृत्रस्य कर्मातिमहाद्भुतं तत् सुरासुराश्चारणसिद्धसङ्घा: ।

अपूजयंस्तत् पुरुहूतसंकटं निरीक्ष्य हा हेति विचुक्रुशुर्भृशम् ॥५॥


वृत्रस्य कर्म-अति-महा-अद्भुतम्
Vritra's feat, very much marvellous
तत् सुर-असुरा:-चारण
that, gods the demons, Chaaranas,
सिद्ध-सङ्घा:
and the Siddha's hosts
अपूजयन्-तत् पुरुहूत-संकटम्
admired that, Indra's plight
निरीक्ष्य हा हा-इति
seeing 'Alas! Alas!' thus
विचुक्रुशु:-भृशम्
cried again and again

The gods, the demons and the hosts of Chaaranas, and the Siddhas, very much admired the most marvellous feat of Vritraasura, and seeing the plight of Indra, cried "Alas! Alas!' again and again.


इन्द्रो न वज्रं जगृहे विलज्जितश्च्युतं स्वहस्तादरिसन्निधौ ।

तमाह वृत्रो हर आत्तवज्रो जहि स्वशत्रुं न विषादकाल: ॥६॥


इन्द्र: न वज्रम् जगृहे
Indra did not the thunderbolt take up
विलज्जित:-च्युतम्
ashamed, fallen
स्व-हस्तात्-अरि-सन्निधौ
from own hands, in enemy's front
तम्-आह वृत्र: हरे आत्त-वज्र:
him said Vritra, 'O Indra! Take up the thunderbolt
जहि स्व-शत्रुम्
kill your foe
न विषाद-काल:
it not to lament time'

Indra was ashamed for the thunderbolt having fallen from his own hands, in the front of the enemy, and did not take it up. Vritra said to him, 'O Indra! Take up the thunderbolt and kill your foe. It is no time to lament.'


युयुत्सतां कुत्रचिदाततायिनां जय: सदैकत्र न वै परात्मनाम् ।

विनैकमुत्पत्तिलयस्थितीश्वरं सर्वज्ञमाद्यं पुरुषं सनातनम् ॥७॥


युयुत्सताम् कुत्रचित्-
eager for combat, where ever,
आततायिनाम् जय: सदा-
of the bellicose victory, always
एकत्र न वै परात्मनाम्
singularly is not indeed led by destiny
विना-एकम्-उत्पत्ति-लय-
except The One of the creation dissolution,
स्थिति-ईश्वरम् सर्वज्ञम्-
and preservation's Lord, The All Knowing,
आद्यम् पुरुषम् सनातनम्
The Primary Person, The Eternal

The bellicose armed with weapons, eager for a combat, led on by their destiny, are singularly not always ever victorious, except for The One Lord of creation, dissolution, and preservation, The All- Knower, The Eternal Primary Person.


लोका: सपाला यस्येमे वसन्ति विवशा वशे ।

द्विजा इव शिचा बद्धा: स काल इह कारणम् ॥८॥


लोका: सपाला: यस्य-इमे
the worlds, with their guardians, of which (reason) in this
वसन्ति विवशा वशे
live, helplessly in control of
द्विजा: इव शिचा बद्धा:
birds like, in net caught,
स: काल: इह कारणम्
that Time, in this is the reason

Because of Lord alone, in the form of Time, being in control of Whom, is the reason by which, the worlds and their guardians helplessly carry on their activities of life, like the birds caught in the net.


ओज: सहो बलं प्राणममृतं मृत्युमेव च ।

तमज्ञाय जनो हेतुमात्मानं मन्यते जडम् ॥९॥


ओज: सह: बलम् प्राणम्-
the potency, the power, strength, life,
अमृतम् मृत्युम्-एव च
immortality, death also and
तम्-अज्ञाय जन: हेतुम्-
that (Time) not knowing, man, the cause
आत्मानम् मन्यते जडम्
his own body, recognizes, the gross

A man does not recognize Time as the cause of potency of sense, power of mind, strength of body, life, immortality and even death, rather he looks upon his own gross body as the cause of all this and even victory.


यथा दारुमयी नारी यथा यन्त्रमयो मृग: ।

एवं भूतानि मघवन्नीशतन्त्राणि विद्धि भो: ॥१०॥


यथा दारुमयी नारी
just as wooden woman
यथा यन्त्रमय: मृग:
just as mechanical deer
एवम् भूतानि मघवन्-
like that the beings, O Indra!
ईश-तन्त्राणि विद्धि भो:
The Lord's control, know, O!

O Indra! Just as a wooden woman and just as a mechanical deer is manipulated by others, like that know that all beings are controlled by The Lord and are manipulated by Him.


पुरुष: प्रकृतिर्व्यक्तमात्मा भूतेन्द्रियाशया: ।

शक्नुवन्त्यस्य सर्गादौ न विना यदनुग्रहात् ॥११॥


पुरुष: प्रकृति:-अव्यक्तम्-
the Jeeva, Prakriti, Mahat-tatva,
आत्मा भूत-इन्द्रिय-आशया:
ego, five elements, senses, and the mind,
शक्नुवन्ति-अस्य सर्ग-आदौ
are capable of its creation, etc.,
न विना यत्-अनुग्रहात्
not without by Whose grace

Without Whose grace, the Jeeva, Prakriti, the Mahat-tatva's, the ego, the five elements, the senses, and the mind are not capable of creating, preserving or destruction.


अविद्वानेवमात्मानं मन्यतेऽनीशमीश्वरम् ।

भूतै: सृजति भूतानि ग्रसते तानि तै: स्वयम् ॥१२॥


अविद्वान्-एव-आत्मानम्
the ignorant only himself
मन्यते-अनीशम्-ईश्वरम्
regards, master less, the master
भूतै: सृजति भूतानि
by the beings creates the beings
ग्रसते तानि तै: स्वयम्
devours them through them himself

Only the ignorant regards himself as the master less master. Whereas, He only creates the beings through the beings and devours them through the other beings.


आयु: श्री: कीर्तिरैश्वर्यमाशिष: पुरुषस्य या: ।

भवन्त्येव हि तत्काले यथानिच्छोर्विपर्यया: ॥१३॥


आयु: श्री: कीर्ति:-
long life, affluence, fame,
ऐश्वर्यम्-आशिष:
power, the blessings
पुरुषस्य या:
(coveted by) the man which
भवन्ति-एव हि तत्-काले
happen only in that time
यथा-अनिच्छ:-विपर्यया:
just as undesired for, or otherwise

The blessings coveted by man, like long life, affluence, fame, power, etc., happen only in the time fixed for them, and those even which are not desired for, like death, poverty, infamy, sickness, etc.,.


तस्मादकीर्तियशसोर्जयापजययोरपि ।

सम: स्यात् सुखदु:खाभ्यां मृत्युजीवितयोस्तथा ॥१४॥


तस्मात्-अकीर्ति-यशसो:-
therefore, in disrepute and fame
जय-अपजययो:-अपि
victory and defeat also
सम: स्यात् सुख-दु:खाभ्याम्
balanced should be in joy and sorrow
मृत्यु-जीवितयो:-तथा
in death and life

Therefore, one should be balanced in disrepute and fame, in victory and defeat, in joy and sorrow, and in life and death.


सत्त्वं रजस्तम इति प्रकृतेर्नात्मनो गुणा: ।

तत्र साक्षिणमात्मानं यो वेद न स बध्यते ॥१५॥


सत्त्वम् रज:-तम इति प्रकृते:-
Sattva, Rajas, Tamas, these of Prakriti
न-आत्मन: गुण:
not of the Self the attributes
तत्र साक्षिणम्-आत्मानम्
there witness oneself
य: वेद न स: बध्यते
who recognizes, not he is bound

Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas are the attributes of Prakriti and not of the Self. He who recognizes the Self to be a witness, is not bound by them.


पश्य मां निर्जितं शक्र वृक्णायुधभुजं मृधे ।

घटमानं यथाशक्ति तव प्राणजिहीर्षया ॥१६॥


पश्य माम् निर्जितम् शक्र
look at me, defeated, O Indra!
वृक्ण-आयुध-भुजम् मृधे
(with) cut off weapon (trident), (and) arm in the battle
घटमानम् यथा-शक्ति:
exerting with full power
तव प्राण-जिहीर्षया
your life wanting to take

O Indra! Look at me. I am defeated in the battle, as my arm and my weapon, the trident is cut off by you. Yet, I am exerting with my full power to fight with the desire to take your life.


प्राणग्लहोऽयं समर इष्वक्षो वाहनासन: ।

अत्र न ज्ञायतेऽमुष्य जयोऽमुष्य पराजय: ॥१७॥


प्राण-ग्लह:-अयम् समर
life at stake is this warfare
इषु-अक्ष: वाहन-आसन:
arrows are the dice, the mounts are the board
अत्र न ज्ञायते-अमुष्य जय:-
here is not known, this ones victory (or)
अमुष्य पराजय:
this ones defeat

This warfare is a game of chance, in which the arrows are the dice and the mounts are the (game) board. It is not known this one is the winner or this one is the defeated.


श्री शुक उवाच-
Shri Shuka said -
इन्द्रो वृत्रवच: श्रुत्वा गतालीकमपूजयत् ।

गृहीतवज्र: प्रहसंस्तमाह गतविस्मय: ॥१८॥


इन्द्र: वृत्र-वच: श्रुत्वा
Indra, Vritra's words hearing
गत-अलीकम्-अपूजयत्
guile-less, welcomed it
गृहीत-वज्र: प्रहसन्-
taking up the thunderbolt, laughingly
तम्-आह गत-विस्मय:
to him said without wonder

Indra heard the guile-less words of Vritraasura, and welcomed it. He took up the thunderbolt, and without any wonder, laughingly said to him,…


इन्द्र उवाच -
Indra said -
अहो दानव सिद्धोऽसि यस्य ते मतिरीदृशी ।

भक्त: सर्वात्मनाऽऽत्मानं सुहृदं जगदीश्वरम् ॥१९॥


अहो दानव सिद्ध:-असि
O Demon! have achieved (your goal)
यस्य ते मति:-ईदृशी
whose, your mind is such
भक्त: सर्वात्मना-आत्मानम्
a devotee of, with all your being, The Soul,
सुहृदम् जगदीश्वरम्
true Friend, of the universe The Ruler

O Demon! You have achieved your goal, in that your mind is such, and you are a devotee with all your being, of The Soul, and The True Friend, of The Ruler of the universe.


भवानतार्षीन्मायां वै वैष्णवीं जनमोहिनीम् ।

यद् विहायासुरं भावं महापुरुषतां गत: ॥२०॥


भवान्-अतार्षीत्-मायाम्
you have crossed (reached the end) of Maayaa
वै वैष्णवीम् जन-मोहिनीम्
indeed of Vishnu, people deluding
यत् विहाय-आसुरम् भावम्
in that shedding, demonic disposition
महा-पुरुषताम् गत:
exalted peoples position have gained

You have reached the end of Vishnu's Maayaa, which deludes the people, in that you have shed the demonic disposition and attained the disposition of the exalted souls.


खल्विदं महदाश्चर्यं यद् रज: प्रकृतेस्तव ।

वासुदेवे भगवति सत्त्वात्मनि दृढा मति: ॥२१॥


खलु-इदम् महत्-आश्चर्यम्
Surely this is very surprising
यत् रज: प्रकृते:-तव
that, of Raajasic temperament you
वासुदेवे भगवति
in Vaasudeva The Lord
सत्त्व-आत्मनि दृढा: मति:
in The Sattva personified, unwavering devotion

This is surely very surprising that you, of a Raajasic temperament have such an unwavering devotion to The Sattva personified Lord Vaasudeva.


यस्य भक्तिर्भगवति हरौ नि:श्रेयसेश्वरे ।

विक्रीडतोऽमृताम्भोधौ किं क्षुद्रै: खातकोदकै: ॥२२॥


यस्य भक्ति:-भगवति हरौ
whose devotion is in Lord Shree Hari
नि:श्रेयसे-ईश्वरे
The Bestower of final beatitude, The All-Powerful
विक्रीडत:-अमृत-अम्भोघौ
(and) sports in the nectar ocean
किम् क्षुद्रै: खातक-उदकै:
of what (use) with small puddles' water

The one whose devotion is in Lord Shree Hari, The All-powerful, The Bestower of final beatitude, he sports in the ocean of nectar. Of what use is the water of small puddles (small heavenly enjoyments etc.) to him?


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shri Shuka said -
इति ब्रुवाणावन्योन्यं धर्मजिज्ञासया नृप ।

युयुधाते महावीर्याविन्द्रवृत्रौ युधाम्पती ॥२३॥


इति ब्रुवाणौ-अन्योन्यम्
thus talking to each other
धर्म-जिज्ञासया नृप
in Dharma (righteousness) enquiring, O King!
युयुधाते महावीर्यौ-
kept fighting the two warriors
इन्द्र-वृत्रौ युधाम्पती
Indra and Vritra, scions in battle

O King! The two warriors, the scions in battle, Indra and Vritraasura, kept on fighting even as they spoke to each other, enquiring into the true nature of righteousness, Dharma.


आविध्य परिघं वृत्र: कार्ष्णायसमरिन्दम: ।

इन्द्राय प्राहिणोद् घोरं वामहस्तेन मारिष ॥२४॥


आविध्य परिघम् वृत्र:
whirling the bludgeon, Vritra,
कार्ष्णायसम्-अरिन्दम:
made of iron, the foe subduer
इन्द्राय प्राहिणोत् घोरम्
on Indra hurled, the terrible
वाम-हस्तेन मारिष
with left hand, O noble Pareekshita!

O noble Pareekshita! Vritra, the subduer of the foe, whirled his terrible bludgeon, made of iron, and hurled it at Indra, with his left hand.


स तु वृत्रस्य परिघं करं च करभोपमम् ।

चिच्छेद युगपद् देवो वज्रेण शतपर्वणा ॥२५॥


स: तु परिघम् करम् च
he indeed, the bludgeon and the arm
करभ-उपमम्
the tusk (of an elephant) like
चिच्छेद युगपत् देव:
severed simultaneously, the god
वज्रेण शत-पर्वणा
by the thunderbolt of hundred knots

Indeed, the god Indra severed the bludgeon and the arm resembling the tusk of an elephant, simultaneously, with the thunderbolt which had a hundred knots.


दोर्भ्यामुत्कृत्तमूलाभ्यां बभौ रक्तस्रवोऽसुर: ।

छिन्नपक्षो यथा गोत्र: खाद् भ्रष्टो वज्रिणा हत: ॥२६॥


दोर्भ्याम्-उत्कृत्त-
both chopped
मूलाभ्याम् बभौ
at the roots became
रक्त-स्रव:-असुर:
blood flowing demon
छिन्न-पक्ष: यथा गोत्र:
chopped wings, like mountain
खात् भ्रष्ट: वज्रिणा हत:
from the sky dropped, by the thunderbolt struck

With both the arms chopped at the roots, the demon with blood flowing shone like the mountain dropped from the sky with its two wings chopped off by the thunderbolt.


कृत्वाधरां हनुं भूमौ दैत्यो दिव्युत्तरां हनुम् ।

नभोगम्भीरवक्त्रेण लेलिहोल्बणजिह्वया ॥२७॥


कृत्वा-अधराम् हनुम् भूमौ
placing the lower jaw, on the earth,
दैत्य: दिवि-उत्तराम् हनुम्
the demon, in heaven the upper jaw,
नभ:-गम्भीर-वक्त्रेण
by the sky (like) deep mouth,
लेलिह-उल्बण-जिह्वया
(with) wagging fierce tongue

The demon placed his lower jaw on the earth, and stretched his upper jaw up to the heavens, and like the sky with the deep mouth, and with his wagging fierce tongue,….


दंष्ट्राभि: कालकल्पाभिर्ग्रसन्निव जगत्त्रयम् ।

अतिमात्रमहाकाय आक्षिपंस्तरसा गिरीन् ॥२८॥


दंष्ट्राभि: काल-कल्पाभि:-
by the teeth like death fierce
ग्रसन्-इव जगत्-त्रयम्
devouring as if, the worlds three
अतिमात्र-महाकाय
very voluminous huge body
आक्षिपन्-तरसा गिरीन्
throwing about speedily, the mountains

With the teeth fierce as death, as if devouring the three worlds, and with his voluminous huge body throwing about the mountains in speed,..


गिरिराट् पादचारीव पद्भ्यां निर्जरयन् महीम् ।

जग्रास स समासाद्य वज्रिणं सहवाहनम् ॥२९॥


गिरि-राट् पाद-चारी-इव
mountain king, on the feet walking like
पद्भ्याम् निर्जरयन् महीम्
by (his) feet trampling the earth
जग्रास स: समासाद्य
swallowed he, approached
वज्रिणम् सह-वाहनम्
the thunderbolt wielder (Indra), with the mount

Like the mountain king walking on his feet, he trampled the earth with his feet, approached the thunderbolt wielder, Indra and swallowed him along with his mount, the elephant Airaawata.


महाप्राणो महावीर्यो महासर्प इव द्विपम् ।

वृत्रग्रस्तं तमालक्ष्य सप्रजापतय: सुरा: ।

हा कष्टमिति निर्विण्णाश्चुक्रुशु: समहर्षय: ॥३०॥


महाप्राण: महावीर्य:
of immense strength, of extraordinary power
महासर्प: इव द्विपम्
a gigantic snake like the elephant
वृत्र-ग्रस्तम् तम्-आलक्ष्य
by Vritra swallowed, him seeing
सप्रजापतय: सुरा:
along with the guardians, the gods,
हा कष्टम्-इति
Alas, what a pity!' this
निर्विण्णा:-चक्रुशु:
in despair exclaimed
समहर्षय:
with the great sages

By Vritraasura, who was of immense strength, great power and gigantic like a snake, seeing him swallow the elephant, the guardians of the directions, the gods, and the great sages, all exclaimed in great despair, 'Alas! What a pity!'


निगीर्णोऽप्यसुरेन्द्रेण न ममारोदरं गत: ।

महापुरुषसन्नद्धो योगमायाबलेन च ॥३१॥


निगीर्ण:-अपि-असुर-इन्द्रेण
swallowed even, by the demons' king
न ममार-उदरम् गत:
did not die, in the stomach reached
महा-पुरुष-सन्नद्ध:
by The Supreme Person protected
योग-माया-बलेन च
by Yoga mystic power, and by power of conjuration

Though swallowed by the king of the demons, and having reached his stomach, Indra did not die, as he was protected by The Supreme Person, (in the shape of The Naaraayana-Kavach) and by the mystic power of the Yoga and the power of conjuration.


भित्त्वा वज्रेण तत्कुक्षिं निष्क्रम्य बलभिद् विभु: ।

उच्चकर्त शिर: शत्रोर्गिरिशृङ्गमिवौजसा ॥३२॥


भित्त्वा वज्रेण तत्-कुक्षिम्
ripping by the thunderbolt his belly
निष्क्रम्य बलभिद् विभु:
coming out, Bala's killer, (Indra) the powerful
उच्चकर्त शिर: शत्रो:-
severed off the head of the enemy
गिरि-शृङ्गम्-इव-ओजसा
mountain' peak like with vigour

Bala's killer, the powerful Indra, ripped open the belly of Vritraasura and coming out of it, with great vigour severed off the head of the enemy, like the peak of a mountain.


वज्रस्तु तत्कन्धरमाशुवेग: कृन्तन् समन्तात् परिवर्तमान: ।

न्यपातयत् तावदहर्गणेन यो ज्योतिषामयने वार्त्रहत्ये ॥३३॥


वज्र:-तुस्तु तत्-कन्धरम्-
the thunderbolt, then, his neck
आशु-वेग: कृन्तन्
with high speed cutting
समन्तात् परिवर्तमान:
from all sides revolving
न्यपातयत् तावत्-अहर्गणेन
fell (it), in those many days
य: ज्योतिषाम्-अयने वार्त्र-हत्ये
which in the heavenly bodies course, of Vritra's death

Though the thunderbolt was revolving in high speed and was cutting off the neck of the demon on all sides, it took those many days which are taken by the heavenly bodies to complete their course, until the time of Vritra's death came.


तदा च खे दुन्दुभयो विनेदुर्गन्धर्वसिद्धा: समहर्षिसङ्घा: ।

वार्त्रघ्नलिङ्गैस्तमभिष्टुवाना मन्त्रैर्मुदा कुसुमैरभ्यवर्षन् ॥३४॥


तदा च खे दुन्दुभय: विनेदु:-
then and in the sky, drums sounded
गन्धर्व-सिद्धा: समहर्षि-सङ्घा:
Gandharvas, Siddhaas, with the great sages hosts
वार्त्रघ्न-लिङ्गै:-तम्-अभिष्टुवाना:
by Vritraasura's killers' prowess, him extolled
मन्त्रै:-मुदा कुसुमै:-अभ्यवर्षन्
by hymns joyful, by flowers and showering

Then, drums sounded in the sky and the prowess of the killer of Vritraasura was celebrated by the Gandharvas, Siddhas, and hosts of great sages. He was extolled by the singing of joyful hymns and by showering of flowers.


वृत्रस्य देहान्निष्क्रान्तमात्मज्योतिररिन्दम ।

पश्यतां सर्वलोकानामलोकं समपद्यत ॥३५॥


वृत्रस्य देहात्-निष्क्रान्तम्-
from Vritra's body issuing forth
आत्म-ज्योति:-अरिन्दम
the soul's effulgence, O Pareekshit!
पश्यताम् सर्व-लोकानाम्-
as looked on, all the people
अलोकम् समपद्यत
to the realm beyond merged

O Pareekshit! As all the people looked on, the effulgence of the soul, issued forth from the body of Vritra and his soul merged into The Lord, in the realm beyond.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां षष्ठ स्कन्धे वृत्रवधो नाम द्वादश: अध्याय: ॥१२॥


Thus ends the twelfth discourse entitled 'Vritra Slain', in Book Six of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
