परीक्षित्-उवाच -
Pareekshit said -
रजस्तम:स्वभावस्य ब्रह्मन् वृत्रस्य पाप्मन: ।

नारायणे भगवति कथमासीद् दृढा मति: ॥१॥


रज:-तम: स्वभावस्य
of Raajasic and Taamasic nature
ब्रह्मन् वृत्रस्य पाप्मन:
O lord! of Vritra, the sinful minded
नारायणे भगवति कथम्-
in Naaraayana Lord, how
आसीत् दृढा मति:
was unwavering devotion

O Lord! Vritraasura who was Raajasic and Taamasic by nature, how did he have unwavering devotion in Lord Naaraayana?


देवानां शुद्धसत्त्वानामृषीणां चामलात्मनाम् ।

भक्तिर्मुकुन्दचरणे न प्रायेणोपजायते ॥२॥


देवानाम् शुद्ध-सत्त्वानाम्-
of the gods of pure intellect
ऋषीणाम् च-अमल-आत्मनाम्
of sages and of untainted minds
भक्ति:-मुकुन्द-चरणे
devotion to Vishnu's feet
न प्रायेण-उपजायते
not generally is developed

The gods who have pure intellect and the sages whose minds are untainted by sin, generally, their devotion in the feet of Lord Vishnu is not developed.


रजोभि: समसंख्याता: पार्थिवैरिह जन्तव: ।

तेषां ये केचनेहन्ते श्रेयो वै मनुजादय: ॥३॥


रजोभि: सम-संख्याता:
dust particles like in number
पार्थिवै:-इह जन्तव:
in universe this, living beings
तेषाम् ये केचन-ईहन्ते
of them those little, wish for
श्रेय: वै मनुज-आदय:
virtue indeed, human beings and others

In this universe, living beings are as much in number as dust particles. Of them only those few, human beings and others wish for virtues.


प्रायो मुमुक्षवस्तेषां केचनैव द्विजोत्तम ।

मुमुक्षुणां सहस्रेषु कश्चिन्मुच्येत सिध्यति ॥४॥


प्राय: मुमुक्षव:-तेषाम्
generally liberation seekers, among them
केचन-एव द्विजोत्तम
some only, O celebrated Braahmana!
मुमुक्षुणाम् सहस्रेषु
of the liberation seekers, thousands of
कश्चित्-मुच्येत सिध्यति
some (rare) is rid (of attachment), attains success

Generally there are only some liberation seekers, and among those of thousands, some rare one is rid of attachment and attains success in achieving liberation.


मुक्तानामपि सिद्धानां नारायणपरायण: ।

सुदुर्लभ: प्रशान्तात्मा कोटिष्वपि महामुने ॥५॥


मुक्तानाम्-अपि सिद्धानाम्
of the non-attached also, the successful
नारायण-परायण:
Naaraayana devoted to
सुदुर्लभ: प्रशान्त-आत्मा
is very rare, perfectly serene
कोटिषु-अपि महामुने
in tens of thousands also, O Great sage!

O Great Sage! Of the tens of thousands of the non-attached and liberated, the one devoted to Naaraayana and perfectly serene minded, is very rare.


वृत्रस्तु स कथं पाप: सर्वलोकोपतापन: ।

इत्थं दृढमति: कृष्ण आसीत् संग्राम उल्बणे ॥६॥


वृत्र:-तु स: कथम् पाप:
Vritra, indeed, he how, the sinful,
सर्व-लोक-उपतापन:
of all the worlds' the tormentor
इत्थम् दृढमति: कृष्णे
such like steadfast minded in Krishna
आसीत् संग्राम उल्बणे
was in battle fierce

How, indeed did he, the sinful, the world's tormentor, Vritraasura, have such a steadfast devotion in Krishna even in the midst of the fierce battle?


अत्र न: संशयो भूयाञ्छ्रोतुं कौतुहलं प्रभो ।

य: पौरुषेण समरे सहस्राक्षमतोषयत् ॥७॥


अत्र न: संशय: भूयात्-
here our doubt is, very much
श्रोतुम् कौतुहलम् प्रभो
to hear, eagerness O Master!
य: पौरुषेण समरे
who by valour, in the battle
सहस्राक्षम्-अतोषयत्
the Thousand eyed (Indra), gratified

O Master! In this we have a great doubt, and also an eagerness to hear, as to how by his valour, he gratified the thousand eyed Indra, in the battle?


सूत उवाच -
Soota said -
परीक्षितोऽथ संप्रश्नं भगवान् बादरायणि ।

निशम्य श्रद्दधानस्य प्रतिनन्द्य वचोऽब्रवीत् ॥८॥


परीक्षित:-अथ संप्रश्नम्
from Pareekshit, then, the relevant question
भगवान् बादरायणि
glorious Shukadeva
निशम्य श्रद्दधानस्य
hearing, of the devout
प्रतिनन्द्य वच:-अब्रवीत्
welcomed, words said

Then, the glorious Baadaraayana (Shukadeva), heard the relevant question of the devout Pareekshit and welcomed it, and answered in these words,..


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
शृणुष्वावहितो राजन्नितिहासमिमं यथा ।

श्रुतं द्वैपायनमुखान्नारदाद्देवलादपि ॥९॥


शृणुष्व-अवहित: राजन्-
do hear attentively, O King!
इतिहासम्-इमम् यथा
legend this, as
श्रुतम् द्वैपायन-मुखात्-
was heard (by me) from Vyaasa's mouth,
नारदात्-देवलात्-अपि
Naarada's, Devala's also

O King! Do hear attentively, this legend which I have heard from the mouth of Vyaasa, Naarada and also Devala.


आसीद्राजा सार्वभौम: शूरसेनेषु वै नृप ।

चित्रकेतुरिति ख्यातो यस्यासीत् कामधुङ्मही ॥१०॥


आसीत्-राजा सार्वभौम:
there was a king ruling over the whole earth
शूरसेनेषु वै नृप
in Shoorasena indeed, O King!
चित्रकेतु: इति ख्यात:
Chitraketu, thus famed
यस्य-आसीत् कामधुक्-मही
whose was wish granting earth

O King! There was a king who ruled over the whole world, in Shoorasena’s, who indeed was famous by the name of Chitraketu and to whom the earth yielded all his wishes.


तस्य भार्यासहंस्राणां सहस्राणि दशाभवन् ।

सान्तानिकश्चापि नृपो न लेभे तासु सन्ततिम् ॥११॥


तस्य भार्या-सहंस्राणाम्
his wives, thousands of
सहस्राणि दश-अभवन्
thousands, ten were
सान्तानिक:-च-अपि नृप:
capable of procreation and also the king
न लेभे तासु सन्ततिम्
did not have from them children

He had a crores of wives, and though he was capable of procreation, he did not have children from any of them.


रूपौदार्यवयोजन्मविद्यैश्वर्यश्रियादिभि: ।

सम्पन्नस्य गुणै: सर्वैश्चिन्ता वन्ध्यापतेरभूत् ॥१२॥


रूप-औदार्य-वय:-जन्म-
by beauty, generosity, youth, lineage,
विद्या-ऐश्वर्य-श्री-आदिभि:
learning, effluence, fortune and others
सम्पन्नस्य गुणै: सर्वै:-
endowed with virtues all
चिन्ता वन्ध्या-पते:-अभूत्
anxiety of the barren women's husband became

The king was endowed with all virtues and also beauty, generosity, youth, lineage, learning, effluence, imperial fortune etc., yet he was caught in the anxiety of being a husband of barren women.


न तस्य संपद: सर्वा महिष्यो वामलोचना: ।

सार्वभौमस्य भूश्चेयमभवन् प्रीतिहेतव: ॥१३॥


न तस्य संपद: सर्वा:
not for him, the wealth all
महिष्य: वामलोचना:
of the queens of beautiful eyes,
सार्वभौमस्य भू:-च-इयम्-
of the ruler of the whole earth and this
अभवन् प्रीति-हेतव:
became delight source

For him, the sovereign of the whole world, the wealth, the fair-eyed queens, this earth, nothing became a source of delight.


तस्यैकदा तु भवनमङ्गिरा भगवानृषि: ।

लोकाननुचरन्नेतानुपागच्छद्यदृच्छया ॥१४॥


तस्य-एकदा तु भवनम्-
to his, one day, indeed house
अङ्गिरा भगवान्-ऋषि:
Angeera, the glorious sage
लोकान्-अनुचरन्-एतान्-
worlds ranging through these
उपागच्छत्-यदृच्छया
came by chance

One day, the glorious sage Angeera, ranging through these worlds , by chance, indeed came to his house.


तं पूजयित्वा विधिवत्प्रत्युत्थानार्हणादिभि: ।

कृतातिथ्यमुपासीदत्सुखासीनं समाहित: ॥१५॥


तम् पूजयित्वा विधिवत्-
him, having worshipped, duly,
प्रत्युत्थान-अर्हण-आदिभि:
by rising, offerings etc.,
कृत-आतिथ्यम्-उपासीदत्-
having performed hospitality, seating
सुखासीनम् समाहित:
comfortably, and attentively

The emperor, duly worshipped him by rising from his seat and greeting him, offering him articles of worship and treating him well as a guest, sat, with attention, after the sage was comfortably seated.


महर्षिस्तमुपासीनं प्रश्रयावनतं क्षितौ ।

प्रतिपूज्य महाराज समाभाष्येदमब्रवीत् ॥१६॥


महर्षि:-तम्-उपासीनम्
the great sage (Angeeraa), him sitting close by
प्रश्रय-अवनतम् क्षितौ
with reverence bent head, on the ground
प्रतिपूज्य महाराज
with courtesy, O Great King!
समाभाष्य-इदम्-अब्रवीत्
addressing, this said

The great sage, Angeeraa, with courtesy said to him, who was sitting next to him on the ground, with his head bent in reverence, addressing him as 'O Great King!', thus,….


अङ्गिरा उवाच -
Angeeraa said -
अपि तेऽनामयं स्वस्ति प्रकृतीनां तथाऽऽत्मन: ।

यथा प्रकृतिभिर्गुप्त: पुमान् राजापि सप्तभि: ॥१७॥


अपि ते-अनामयम्
is your all well
स्वस्ति प्रकृतीनाम्
is all good with the Prakritis (constituents of the state)
तथा-आत्मन:
and of yourself
यथा प्रकृतिभि:-गुप्त:
just as by shields covered
पुमान् राजा-अपि सप्तभि:
Jeeva, king also by seven

Is all well with you? Is everything good with your Prakritis, the constituent elements of the state? And with yourself? Just as a Jeeva is covered by seven material shields so also the king is assisted by the seven constituents.


आत्मानं प्रकृतिष्वद्धा निधाय श्रेय आप्नुयात् ।

राज्ञा तथा प्रकृतयो नरदेवाहिताधय: ॥१८॥


आत्मानम् प्रकृतिषु-अद्धा
self in the Prakritis, actually
निधाय श्रेय: आप्नुयात्
placing, blessing will get
राज्ञा तथा प्रकृतय:
by the king likewise, the Prakritis
नरदेव-आहित-आधय:
O King! placing security (in him)

O King! The king enjoys the blessings of sovereignty by placing himself in the control of the Prakritis, likewise, the Prakritis are benefitted by placing their security in the king.


अपि दारा: प्रजामात्या भृत्या: श्रेण्योऽथ मन्त्रिण: ।

पौरा जानपदा भूपा आत्मजा वशवर्तिन: ॥१९॥


अपि दारा: प्रजा:-आमात्या:
are the wives, subjects, ministers,
भृत्या: श्रेण्य:-अथ मन्त्रिण:
servants, traders, then councillors
पौरा: जानपदा: भूपा:
citizens, inhabitants of the villages, small kings
आत्मजा: वशवर्तिन:
and sons, obedient to you

Are your wives, subjects, ministers, servants, traders, then councillors, citizens, inhabitants of the villages, small kings and sons obedient to you?


यस्यात्मानुवशश्चेत्स्यात्सर्वे तद्वशगा इमे ।

लोका: सपाला यच्छन्ति सर्वे बलिमतन्द्रिता: ॥२०॥


यस्य-आत्मा-अनुवश:-चेत्-
he whose mind is controlled, may be,
स्यात्-सर्वे तत्-वशगा: इमे
will be, all his under control these
लोका: सपाला: यच्छन्ति
the worlds with the guardians offer
सर्वे बलिम्-अतन्द्रिता:
all tributes dutifully

The one whose mind is under control, all of these are under his control, and the worlds, along with the guardian ditties dutifully offer tributes to him.


आत्मन: प्रीयते नात्मा परत: स्वत एव वा ।

लक्षयेऽलब्धकामं त्वां चिन्तया शबलं मुखम् ॥२१॥


आत्मन: प्रीयते न-आत्मा
by yourself is pleased not yourself
परत: स्वत: एव वा
by others or by oneself, only or
लक्षये-अलब्ध-कामम्
(I) notice, unfulfilled desired
त्वाम् चिन्तया शबलम् मुखम्
you by anxiety, discoloured faced

It seems, you are not pleased with yourself or by others only, or by oneself. I notice that your face is discoloured due to the anxiety of some unfulfilled desire.


एवं विकल्पितो राजन् विदुषा मुनिनापि स: ।

प्रश्रयावनतोऽभ्याह प्रजाकामस्ततो मुनिम् ॥२२॥


एवम् विकल्पित: राजन्
thus with presumptions (questioned), O King!
विदुषा मुनिना-अपि स:
by the learned sage also, he
प्रश्रय-अवनत:-अभ्याह
reverentially bowed low, modestly replied
प्रजाकाम:-तत: मुनिम्
longing for son, then to the sage

O King! Then, questioned with presumptions, by the learned sage, he reverentially bowed low and then modestly replied to the sage for his longing of a son.


चित्रकेतु: उवाच -
Chitraketu said -
भगवन् किं न विदितं तपोज्ञानसमाधिभि: ।

योगिनां ध्वस्तपापानां बहिरन्त: शरीरिषु ॥२३॥


भगवन् किम् न विदितम्
O Worshipful sage! What not is known
तप:-ज्ञान-समाधिभि:
by asceticism, enlightenment and concentration
योगिनाम् ध्वस्त-पापानाम्
of the Yogis (who are) wiped of sins
बहि:-अन्त: शरीरिषु
outside and inside of the bodied beings

O Worshipful sage! to the Yogis, like you, whose sins have been wiped by severe asceticism, spiritual enlightenment, and deep concentration, what is not known of the mortal beings, within and even without?


तथापि पृच्छतो ब्रूयां ब्रह्मन्नात्मनि चिन्तितम् ।

भवतो विदुषश्चापि चोदितस्त्वदनुज्ञया ॥२४॥


तथा-अपि पृच्छत: ब्रूयाम्
even then, asked (by you) will say
ब्रह्मन्-आत्मनि चिन्तितम्
O Holy sage! my mind's thought
भवत: विदुष:-च-अपि
by you the knower, and also
चोदित:-त्वत्-अनुज्ञया
prompted by your command

O Holy sage! Even then, prompted by your command, and as asked by you, I will tell you the thought of my mind, even though you know it.


लोकपालैरपि प्रार्थ्या: साम्रज्यैश्वर्यसम्पद: ।

न नदयन्त्यप्रजं मां क्षुत्तृट्काममिवापरे ॥२५॥


लोक-पालै:-अपि प्रार्थ्या:
by the world's guardians also coveted
साम्रज्य-ऐश्वर्य-सम्पद:
sovereignty, power, effluence
न नदयन्ति-अप्रजम् माम्
do not delight, issueless me
क्षुत्-तृट्-कामम्-इव-अपरे
hunger thirst desiring (food and water), like other (things)

The sovereignty, power and effluence which is coveted even by the guardians of the spheres, do not delight the issueless me, like the one oppressed by hunger and thirst, longs for only food and drink and nothing else.


तत: पाहि महाभाग पूर्वै: सह गतं तम: ।

यथा तरेम दुस्तारं प्रजया तद् विधेहि न: ॥२६॥


तत: पाहि महाभाग
therefore protect us, O Blessed One!
पूर्वै: सह गतम् तम:
along with forefathers, gone to the dark (abyss of hell)
यथा तरेम दुस्तारम्
so that may cross, the difficult to cross
प्रजया तत् विधेहि न:
by a son, that accomplish for us

Therefore, O Blessed One! Do protect us. Do accomplish that by which, we, along with our forefathers who have almost reached to the abyss of the dark hell, may cross, with the help of a son, which is otherwise very difficult to cross.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इत्यर्थित: स भगवान् कृपालुर्ब्रह्मण: सुत: ।

श्रपयित्वा चरुं त्वाष्ट्रं त्वष्टारमयजद् विभु: ॥२७॥


इति-अर्थित: स: भगवान्
thus requested, he, the glorious,
कृपालु:-ब्रह्मण: सुत:
merciful, Brahma's son
श्रपयित्वा चरुम् त्वाष्ट्रम्
prepared oblation, proper for Twashtaa
त्वष्टारम्-अयजत् विभु:
Twashtaa propitiated, the powerful

As requested by Chitraketu, the glorious, merciful, powerful son of Brahmaa, Angeeraa, prepared an oblation proper for Twashtaa, and by that propitiated the god Twashtaa.


ज्येष्ठा श्रेष्ठा च या राज्ञो महिषीणां च भारत ।

नाम्ना कृतद्युतिस्तस्यै यज्ञोच्छिष्टमदाद् द्विज: ॥२८॥


ज्येष्ठा श्रेष्ठा च या
to the eldest best and who
राज्ञ: महिषीणाम् च भारत
of the king's queens, and O Pareekshit!
नाम्ना कृतद्युति:-तस्यै
by named Kritadyuti, to her
यज्ञ-उच्छिष्टम्-अदात् द्विज:
the Yagya's left over, gave the Braahmana

O Pareekshit! The one who was the eldest and the best of the queens of the king, Kritadyuti by name, to her, the Braahmana gave the rest of the oblation, left over from the sacrifice.


अथाह नृपतिं राजन् भवितैकस्तवात्मज: ।

हर्षशोकप्रदस्तुभ्यमिति ब्रह्मसुतो ययौ ॥२९॥


अथ-आह नृपतिम् राजन्
then said to the king, O King!
भविता-एक:-तव-आत्मज:
will be one, your son
हर्ष-शोक-प्रद:-तुभ्यम्-
joy sorrow giver to you,
इति ब्रह्म-सुत: ययौ
thus, Brahma's son went away

O King! Then, Brahma's son Angeeraa, said to the king, 'You will have one son, who will give you both, joy and sorrow.' Thus saying, he went away.


सापि तत्प्राशनादेव चित्रकेतोरधारयत् ।

गर्भं कृतद्युतिर्देवी कृत्तिकाग्नेरिवात्मजम् ॥३०॥


सा-अपि तत्-प्राशनात्-एव
she also, that having eaten only
चित्रकेतो:-अधारयत्
Chitraketu's conceived
गर्भम् कृतद्युति:-देवी
child, Kritadyuti, the lady
कृत्तिका-अग्ने:-इव-आत्मजम्
Krittikaa (and) fire like son

The lady Kritadyuti also, just by eating that oblation, conceived the child of Chitraketu, a son like that of the goddess Krittikaa and the god fire.


तस्या अनुदिनं गर्भ: शुक्लपक्ष इवोडुप: ।

ववृधे शूरसेनेशतेजसा शनकैर्नृप ॥३१॥


तस्या: अनुदिनम् गर्भ:
her, every day embryo
शुक्ल-पक्ष इव-उडुप:
bright fortnight like of the moon
ववृधे शूरसेनेश-
developed by the lord of Shoorasena's (Chitraketu's)
तेजसा शनकै:-नृप
splendour, gradually, O King!

O King! The embryo in the womb of that lady gradually developed day by day by the splendour of the king of Shoorasena, Chitraketu, like the moon in the bright fortnight.


अथ काल उपावृत्ते कुमार: समजायत ।

जनयन् शूरसेनानां शृण्वतां परमां मुदम् ॥३२॥


अथ काल उपावृत्ते
then time having come
कुमार: समजायत
boy child was born
जनयन् शूरसेनानाम्
by birth of the Shoorasena residents
शृण्वताम् परमाम् मुदम्
hearing, supreme delight

Then, when the time came, a boy child was born. Hearing of his birth the residents of Shoorasena were supremely delighted.


हृष्टो राजा कुमारस्य स्नात: शुचिरलंकृत: ।

वाचयित्वाऽऽशिषो विप्रै: कारयामास जातकम् ॥३३॥


हृष्ट: राजा कुमारस्य
delighted, the king, of the boy child,
स्नात: शुचि:-अलंकृत:
bathed, purified, and adorned with ornaments
वाचयित्वा-आशिष: विप्रै:
pronounced benedictions by the Braahmanas,
कारयामास जातकम्
performed the Jaatakarma rites

The delighted king, bathed and purified, and adorned himself with ornaments, and got the Braahmanas to pronounce benedictions on the boy child and also to perform his Jaatakarma rites.


तेभ्यो हिरण्यं रजतं वासांस्याभरणानि च ।

ग्रामान् हयान् गजान् प्रादाद् धेनूनामर्बुदानि षट् ॥३४॥


तेभ्य: हिरण्यम् रजतम्
to them, gold, silver
वासांसि-आभरणानि च
clothes and ornaments
ग्रामान् हयान् गजान्
villages, horses, elephants
प्रादाद् धेनूनाम्-अर्बुदानि षट्
gave cows millions sixty

He gave to the Braahmanas gold, silver, clothes, ornaments, villages, horses, elephants and sixty million cows.


ववर्ष काममन्येषां पर्जन्य इव देहिनाम् ।

धन्यं यशस्यमायुष्यं कुमारस्य महामना: ॥३५॥


ववर्ष कामम्-अन्येषाम्
showered desired to others
पर्जन्य इव देहिनाम्
cloud like to the people
धन्यम् यशस्यम्-आयुष्यम्
riches, glory, longevity
कुमारस्य महामना:
for the child, the generous

The generous king, to draw riches, glory and longevity for the child, showered on the people their desired objects, like the rain clouds shower rain.


कृच्छ्रलब्धेऽथ राजर्षेस्तनयेऽनुदिनं पितु: ।

यथा नि:स्वस्य कृच्छ्राप्ते धने स्नेहोऽन्ववर्धत ॥३६॥


कृच्छ्र-लब्धे-अथ राजर्षे:-
with hardship attained then, of the emperor,
तनये-अनुदिनम् पितु:
in the son, every day the father's
यथा नि:स्वस्य कृच्छ्राप्ते
like a pauper's, with difficulty got
धने स्नेह:-अन्ववर्धत
in the wealth, love grew

Then, the emperor having attained a son with great hardship, the father's attachment for him, increased day by day like the love of the pauper for his hard-earned wealth.


मातुस्त्वतितरां पुत्रे स्नेहो मोहसमुद्भव: ।

कृतद्युते: सपत्नीनां प्रजाकामज्वरोऽभवत् ॥३७॥


मातु:-तु-अतितराम् पुत्रे
mother's, indeed excessive, in the son
स्नेह: मोह-समुद्भव:
love infatuation caused
कृतद्युते: सपत्नीनाम्
Kritadyuti co-wives'
प्रजा-काम-ज्वर:-अभवत्
child longing agony became

Of the mother, indeed, generated by infatuation, the love for the son was excessive. And the co-wives of Kritadyuti suffered agony by the longing for a child.


चित्रकेतोरतिप्रीतिर्यथा दारे प्रजावति ।

न तथान्येषु सञ्जज्ञे बालं लालयतोऽन्वहम् ॥३८॥


चित्रकेतो:-अति-प्रीति:-
of Chitraketu much fondness
यथा दारे प्रजावति
as for the wife, with a son
न तथा-अन्येषु सञ्जज्ञे
not like that for others developed
बालम् लालयत:-अन्वहम्
the child fondling, every day

The much fondness which developed in Chitraketu for the wife who had the child, by fondling the child every day, there was not such fondness for the other wives.


ता: पर्यतप्यन्नात्मानं गर्हयन्त्योऽभ्यसूयया ।

आनपत्येन दु:खेन राज्ञोऽनादरेण च ॥३९॥


ता: पर्यतप्यन्-आत्मानम्
they suffered themselves
गर्हयन्ति-अभ्यसूयया
reproaching by jealousy
आनपत्येन दु:खेन
being issue-less, with grief
राज्ञ:-अनादरेण च
by the king’s indifference and

They reproached themselves being issue-less, and suffered much grief due to jealousy, and due to the king's indifference.


धिगप्रजां स्त्रियं पापां पत्युश्चागृहसम्मताम् ।

सुप्रजाभि: सपत्नीभिर्दासीमिव तिरस्कृताम् ॥४०॥


धिग्-अप्रजाम् स्त्रियम् पापाम्
fie upon issue-less woman, sinful,
पत्यु:-च-अगृह-सम्मताम्
by the husband and not in the house respected
सुप्रजाभि: सपत्नीभि:-
by the one with good children, the co-wives
दासीम्-इव तिरस्कृताम्
servant like are insulted

Fie upon the wretched issue-less woman, who is not respected by her husband in the house, and by the co-wives who have good children are insulted like servants.


दासीनां को नु सन्ताप: स्वामिन: परिचर्यया ।

अभीक्ष्णं लब्धमानानां दास्या दासीव दुर्भगा: ॥४१॥


दासीनाम् क: नु सन्ताप:
of the maid-servants what may be the agony
स्वामिन: परिचर्यया
by of the master's service
अभीक्ष्णम् लब्ध-मानानाम्
constantly being honoured
दास्या दासी-इव दुर्भगा:
(we) are of the maid servants' maid servant like wretched

What can be the agony of the maid servant, as she is constantly honoured for rendering service to the master. We are wretched in that, that we are no better than a maid servant's maid servant.


एवं सन्दह्यमानानां सपन्या: पुत्रसम्पदा ।

राज्ञोऽसम्मतवृत्तीनां विद्वेषो बलवानभूत् ॥४२॥


एवम् सन्दह्यमानानाम्
thus, burning (with jealously)
सपन्या: पुत्र-सम्पदा
by the co wife's treasure of a son
राज्ञ:-असम्मत वृत्तीनाम्
the king's indifference earning,
विद्वेष: बलवान्-अभूत्
bitter hatred became

Thus, burning with jealousy because of the co-wife's treasury of a son, and earning the indifference of their husband, they became bitter with hatred.


विद्वेषनष्टमतय: स्त्रियो दारुणचेतस: ।

गरं ददु: कुमाराय दुर्मर्षां नृपतिं प्रति ॥४३॥


विद्वेष-नष्ट-मतय:
by jealousy lost sense
स्त्रिय: दारुण-चेतस:
the women, cruel hearted
गरम् ददु: कुमाराय
poison gave to the boy child
दुर्मर्षाम् नृपतिम् प्रति
with resentment, king towards

The cruel hearted women had lost their senses due to jealousy and resentment towards the king, and so they gave poison to the boy child.


कृतद्युतिरजानन्ती सपत्नीनामघं महत् ।

सुप्त एवेति सञ्चिन्त्य निरीक्ष्य व्यचरद् गृहे ॥४४॥


कृतद्युति:-अजानन्ती
Kritadyuti, not knowing
सपत्नीनाम्-अघम् महत्
the co-wives' sin great
सुप्त एव-इति सञ्चिन्त्य
sleeping only thus thinking
निरीक्ष्य व्यचरत् गृहे
observing, went about in the palace

Kritadyuti, not aware of the great sin committed by the co-wives, thought that the child was sleeping when she went to check on him, and went about in the palace.


शयानं सुचिरं बालमुपधार्य मनीषिणी ।

पुत्रमानय मे भद्रे इति धात्रीमचोदयत् ॥४५॥


शयानम् सुचिरम् बालम्-
sleeping for long the child
उपधार्य मनीषिणी
observing, the wise (queen)
पुत्रम्-आनय मे भद्रे
'My son bring, O good woman'
इति धात्रीम्-अचोदयत्
thus to the nurse commanded

The wise queen observed that the child had been sleeping too long, so she commanded to the nurse saying, 'O good woman! Bring the son to me.'


सा शयानमुपव्रज्य दृष्ट्वा चोत्तारलोचनम् ।

प्राणेन्द्रियात्मभिस्त्यक्तं हतास्मीत्यपतद् भुवि ॥४६॥


सा शयानम्-उपव्रज्य
she, sleeping going near
दृष्ट्वा च-उत्तार-लोचनम्
saw and upturned eyes
प्राण-इन्द्रिय-आत्मभि:-
by life, senses and soul
त्यक्तम् हता-अस्मि-
abandoned, 'Finished I am',
इति-अपतत् भुवि
thus fell on the ground

She, the maid, went near the sleeping child and saw that his eyes were up-turned and that life, senses and the soul had abandoned him, she fell on the ground exclaiming 'Alas! I am finished.'


तस्यास्तदाऽऽकर्ण्य भृशातुरं स्वरं घ्नन्त्या: कराभ्यामुर उच्चकैरपि ।

प्रविश्य राज्ञी त्वरयाऽऽत्मजान्तिकं ददर्श बालं सहसा मृतं सुतम् ॥४७॥


तस्या:-तदा-आकर्ण्य
her, then hearing
भृश-आतुरम् घ्नन्त्या:
most painful cry, beating
कराभ्याम्-उर उच्चकै:-अपि
with hand, breasts violently also
प्रविश्य राज्ञी त्वरया-
entered the queen quickly
आत्मज-अन्तिकम् ददर्श
in son's presence saw
बालम् सहसा मृतम् सुतम्
the child suddenly the dead son

Hearing her most painful cry and also the violently beating of her breasts, the queen quickly entered into the presence of the son, and saw the child son suddenly dead.


पपात भूमौ परिवृद्धया शुचा ।

मुमोह विभ्रष्टशिरोरुहाम्बरा ॥४८॥


पपात भूमौ
fell on the ground
परिवृद्धया शुचा
with excessive grief
मुमोह विभ्रष्ट-
fainted with dis-shevelled
शिरोरुह-अम्बरा
hair and clothes

She fell on the ground due to excessive grief and fainted with her hair and clothes dis-shevelled.


ततो नृपान्त: पुरवर्तिनो जना नराश्च नार्यश्च निशम्य रोदनम् ।

आगत्य तुल्यव्यसना: सुदु:खितास्ताश्च व्यलीकं रुरुदु: कृतागस: ॥४९॥


तत: नृपान्त: पुर-वर्तिन:
then, in the king's chambers present
जना: नरा:-च नार्य:-च
people, men and women
निशम्य रोदनम्
hearing the wail
आगत्य तुल्य-व्यसना:
came, of the same sorrow
सुदु:खिता:-ता:-च व्यलीकम्
were very grieved, those and falsely
रुरुदु: कृत-आगस:
cried, (who) committed the crime

Then, inside the king's chambers, the people hearing the wail, came and the men and the women were very much grieved by the same sorrow, even those (queens) who had committed the crime shed false tears.


श्रुत्वा मृतं पुत्रमलक्षितान्तकं विनष्टदृष्टि: प्रपतन् स्खलन् पथि ।

स्नेहानुबन्धैधितया शुचा भृशं विमूर्च्छितोऽनुप्रकृतिर्द्विजैर्वृत: ॥५०॥


श्रुत्वा मृतम् पुत्रम्-
hearing of the dead son
अलक्षित-अन्तकम्
the (cause) unknown of the death
विनष्ट-दृष्टि:
lost vision
प्रपतन् स्खलन् पथि
falling stumbling on the way
स्नेह-अनुबन्ध-एधितया
with love unbounded intensified
शुचा भृशम् विमूर्च्छित:-
grief great, became unconscious
अनुप्रकृति:-द्विजै:-वृत:
by the ministers and Braahmanas surround

The King, hearing of his son's death the cause of which was not known, lost his vision due to unbounded love, his grief intensified, he came falling and stumbling on the way, surrounded by his ministers and the Braahmanas and became unconscious.


पपात बालस्य स पादमूले मृतस्य विस्रस्तशिरोरुहाम्बर: ।

दीर्घं श्वसन् वाष्पकलोपरोधतो निरुद्धकण्ठो न शशाक भाषितुम् ॥५१॥


पपात बालस्य स पादमूले
fell on the child's he feet near
मृतस्य विस्रस्तशिरोरुहाम्बर:
of the dead, dis-shevelled hair and clothes
दीर्घ श्वसन् वाष्पकलोपरोधतो
heavily breathing, with tears' flow obstructing
निरुद्ध-कण्ठ: न शशाक भाषितुम्
choked throat, was not able to speak

And he fell near the feet of the dead son, his hair and clothes dis-shevelled, breathing heavily, throat choked, obstructed by the flow of tears, and so unable to utter a word.


पतिं निरीक्ष्योरुशुचार्पितं तदा मृतं च बालं सुतमेकसन्ततिम् ।

जनस्य राज्ञी प्रकृतेश्च हृद्रुजं सती दधाना विललाप चित्रधा ॥५२॥


पतिम् निरीक्ष्य-
her husband seeing
उरु-शुचा-अर्पितम् तदा
by excessive grief given to then
मृतम् च बालम्
dead and child
सुतम्-एक-सन्ततिम्
son one progeny
जनस्य राज्ञी प्रकृते:-च
the people's queen, of the ministers and
हृद्-रुजम् सती दधाना
heart ache enhancing
विललाप चित्रधा
wailed in various ways

Seeing her husband, and the dead child the son, only one progeny, then, the queen was given to excessive grief, and wailed in various ways, enhancing the heart ache of the people and the ministers.


स्तनद्वयं कुङ्कुमगन्धमण्डितं निषिञ्चती साञ्जनवाष्पबिन्दुभि: ।

विकीर्य केशान् विगलत्स्रज: सुतं शुशोच चित्रं कुररीव सुस्वरम् ॥५३॥


स्तन-द्वयम् कुङ्कुम-गन्ध-मण्डितम्
breasts both, saffron and sandal paste smeared with
निषिञ्चती साञ्जन-वाष्प-बिन्दुभि:
bathing with corrilium tear drops
विकीर्य केशान् विगलत्-स्रज:
hair thrown asunder, scattered about garland
सुतम् शुशोच चित्रम्
son mourned in many ways
कुररी-इव सुस्वरम्
female osprey like in diverse tones

She bathed both her breasts with corrilium tears which were smeared with saffron and sandal paste, her hair thrown about, the garland scattered, she mourned the death of her son like the female osprey in many diverse tones.


अहो विधातस्त्वमतीव बालिशो यस्त्वात्मसृष्ट्यप्रतिरूपमीहसे ।

परेऽनुजीवत्यपरस्य या मृतिर्विपर्ययश्चेत्त्वमसि ध्रुव: पर: ॥५४॥


अहो विधात:-
'Alas! O Creator!
त्वम्-अतीव बालिश:
you are very foolish
य:-तु-आत्म-सृष्टि-
in that indeed of your own creation
अप्रतिरूपम्-ईहसे
contrary behave
परे-अनुजीवति-अपरस्य
older (person) living on, the other's (young person's)
या मृति:-विपर्यय:-
that, death the opposite
चेत्-त्वम्-असि ध्रुव: पर:
if (you do) you are, certainly an enemy

'Alas! O Creator! you are very foolish, in that you act detrimentally to your own creation. An older person lives, whereas a younger one dies, indeed this proves the point. If, in case the opposite is true, that is, if purposely you are doing this, then indeed you are our enemy.


न हि क्रमश्चेदिह मृत्युजन्मनो: शरीरिणामस्तु तदाऽऽत्मकर्मभि: ।

य: स्नेहपाशो निजसर्गवृद्धये स्वयं कृतस्ते तमिमं विवृश्चसि ॥५५॥


न हि क्रम:-चेत्-इह
not indeed course, if is here,
मृत्यु-जन्मनो: शरीरिणाम्-अस्तु
of death and life of the living beings, it may be
तदा-आत्म-कर्मभि:
then by their own (results of) actions
य: स्नेह-पाश: निज-सर्ग-वृद्धये
that love cord, for Your own creation evolution
स्वयम् कृत:-ते
by Yourself produced, You
तम्-इमम् विवृश्चसि
that this are cutting off

If at all, there is no systematic course of death and life here, let it be according to the actions of the living beings. The cord of love which was produced by You, for the evolution of Your own creation, that this cord, you are cutting off, by taking away small children.


त्वं तात नार्हसि च मां कृपणामनाथां त्यक्तुं विचक्ष्व पितरं तव शोकतप्तम् ।

अञ्जस्तरेम भवताप्रजदुस्तरं यद् ध्वान्तं न याह्यकरुणेन यमेन दूरम् ॥५६॥


त्वम् तात न-अर्हसि
You dear son! Should not
च माम् कृपणाम्-अनाथाम्
and me poor, helpless
त्यक्तुम् विचक्ष्व पितरम्
to forsake, look at father
तव शोक-तप्तम्
yours with grief burning
अञ्ज:-तरेम भवता-
easily will cross by you
अप्रज-दुस्तरम् यत् ध्वान्तम्
issueless difficult that hell
न याहि-अकरुणेन यमेन दूरम्
do not go with the cruel Yama, far away

'O dear son! You should not forsake me, the poor and helpless woman. Look at your father, burning with grief. We will easily cross the hell through you, which is very difficult to cross being issueless. Pray! Do not go away far with the cruel Yama.'


उतिष्ठ तात त इमे शिशवो वयस्यास्त्वामाह्वयन्ति नृपनन्दन संविहर्तुम् ।

सुप्तश्चिरं ह्यशनया च भवान् परीतो भुङ्क्ष्व स्तनं पिब शुचो हर न: स्वकानाम् ॥५७॥


उतिष्ठ तात ते इमे शिशव:
'Arise! O dear! they these children
वयस्या:-त्वाम्-आह्वयन्ति
playmates you are calling,
नृपनन्दन संविहर्तुम्
O Prince! to roam about together
सुप्त:-चिरम् हि-अशनया
have slept for long, indeed without food
च भवान् परीत: भुङ्क्ष्व
and you are hungry, eat,
स्तनम् पिब शुच: हर न: स्वकानाम्
breast suck, grief take away ours, your own dear ones

'O Dear, Arise! These children, your playmates are calling you to roam about together. O Prince! You have slept for too long without food. You must be hungry. Eat something, suck my breasts. Take away our grief, of your own dear ones.'


नाहं तनूज ददृशे हतमङ्गला ते मुग्धस्मितं मुदितवीक्षणमाननमाब्जम् ।

किं वा गतोऽस्यपुनरन्वयमन्यलोकं नीतोऽघृणेन न शृणोमि कला गिरस्ते ॥५८॥


न-अहम् तनूज ददृशे
do not I, O Son! See,
हतमङ्गला ते मुग्ध-स्मितम्
having lost all good fortune, your enchanting smile
मुदित-वीक्षणम्-आननम्-अब्जम्
cheerful glances, face lotus
किम् वा गत:-असि-
what or have (you) gone to
अपुन:-अन्वयम्-अन्य-लोकम्
not again returning the other world
नीत:-अघृणेन
taken by the hateful (Yama)
न शृणोमि कला गिर:-ते
do not hear, sweet voice yours

O Son! I, having lost all good fortune, do not see your enchanting smile, cheerful glances, and face lotus. What? Or have you gone to that other world from where no one returns, taken away by the hateful Yama? I do not hear even your sweet voice.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
विलपन्त्या मृतं पुत्रमिति चित्रविलापनै: ।

चित्रकेतुर्भृशं तप्तो मुक्तकण्ठो रुरोद ह ॥५९॥


विलपन्त्या मृतम् पुत्रम्-इति
mourning over the dead son, thus
चित्र-विलापनै:
by varied laments,
चित्रकेतु:-भृशम् तप्त:
Chitraketu extremely agonized
मुक्त-कण्ठ: रुरोद ह
in top voice wailed indeed

She mourned over her dead son in such varied laments. Chitraketu also, extremely agonized, wailed, indeed in top of his voice.


तयोर्विलपतो: सर्वे दम्पत्योस्तदनुव्रता: ।

रुरुद: स्म नरा नार्य: सर्वमासीदचेतनम् ॥६०॥


तयो:-विलपतो: सर्वे
as they two wailed, all
दम्पत्यो:-तत्-अनुव्रता:
to the couple, their devoted
रुरुद: स्म नरा: नार्य:
wailed men and women
सर्वम्-आसीत्-अचेतनम्
everything became lifeless

As the two of them wailed, those who were devoted to the couple, and also the men and women all cried. Everything became, as though lifeless.


एवं कश्मलमापन्नं नष्टसंज्ञमनायकम् ।

ज्ञात्वाङ्गिरा नाम मुनिराजगाम सनारद: ॥६१॥


एवम् कश्मलम्-आपन्नम्
like this, in despair fallen
नष्ट-संज्ञम्-अनायकम्
lost consciousness, without a guide
ज्ञात्वा-अङ्गिरा नाम मुनि:-
knowing, Angeeraa named sage
आजगाम स-नारद:
came with Naarada

Coming to know that the king had given to despair, was unconscious, and was without a guide, the sage named Angeeraa came there with Naarada.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां षष्ठे स्कन्धे चित्रकेतुविलापो नाम चतुर्दश: अध्याय: ॥१४॥


Thus ends the fourteenth discourse entitled 'The lament of Chitraketu', in Book Six of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
