नारद उवाच -
Naarada said -
हिरण्यकशिपू राजन्नजेयमजरामरम् ।

आत्मानमप्रतिद्वन्द्वमेकराजं व्यधित्सत ॥१॥


हिरण्यकशिपू राजन्-
Hiranyakashipu, O King!
अजेयम्-अजर-अमरम्
invincible, free from old age and death,
आत्मानम्-अप्रतिद्वन्द्वम्-
himself, without a rival
एक-राजम् व्यधित्सत
the sole monarch wished to make

'O King! Hiranyakashipu wanted to make himself invincible, free from old age and death, without any rival and the sole monarch of the three worlds.'


स तेपे मन्दरद्रोण्यां तप: परमदारुणम् ।

ऊर्ध्वबाहुर्नभोदृष्टि: पादाङ्गुष्टाश्रितावनि ॥२॥


स: तेपे मन्दर-द्रोण्याम्
he practiced austerities, in the Mandaara (mountain) valley
तप: परम-दारुणम्
austerity highly severe
ऊर्ध्व-बाहु:-नभ:-दृष्टि:
raised arms, in the sky the sight
पाद-अङ्गुष्ट-आश्रित-अवनि
feet big toes' support by on the ground

He practiced austerities of the severe kind in the valley of mountain Mandaara, with his arms raised, sight fixed in the sky, and supporting himself on his feet' big toes on the ground.


जटादीधितिभी रेजे संवर्तार्क इवांशुभि: ।

तस्मिंस्तपस्तप्यमाने देवा: स्थानानि भेजिरे ॥३॥


जटा-दीधितिभि: रेजे
by the matted hair's glow (he) shone
संवर्त-अर्क इव-अंशुभि:
the deluge sun like rays
तस्मिन्-तप-तप्यमाने
as he austerities were practiced
देवा: स्थानानि भेजिरे
the gods to their abodes returned

He shone like the Sun at the time of deluge, by the rays of his matted hairs' glow. While he was practicing austerities, the gods returned to their abodes, which they had given up.


तस्य मूर्ध्न: समुद्भूत: सधूमोऽग्निस्तपोमय: ।

तिर्यगूर्ध्वमधोलोकानतपद्विष्वगीरित: ॥४॥


तस्य मूर्ध्न: समुद्भूत:
from his head emanating
सधूम:-अग्नि:-तपोमय:
with smoke fire of asceticism
तिर्यक्-ऊर्ध्वम्-अध:-लोकान्-
the intermediate, higher and lower worlds
तपत्-विष्वक्-ईरित:
scorching on all sides spread

The fire of asceticism along with the smoke, emanated from his crown, which spread on all sides and scorched the intermediate, higher and lower worlds.


चुक्षुभुर्नद्युदन्वन्त: सद्वीपाद्रिश्चचाल भू: ।

निपेतु: सग्रहास्तारा जज्वालुश्च दिशो दश ॥५॥


चुक्षुभु:-नदी-उदन्वन्त:
swelled the rivers and oceans
सद्वीप-अद्रि:-चचाल भू:
along with the islands and mountains shook the earth
निपेतु: सग्रहा:-तारा:
fell down along with the planets the stars
जज्वालु:-च दिश: दश
enflamed and were the ten directions

The rivers and the oceans swelled. The earth shook along with the islands and the mountains. The stars fell down along with the planets. And the ten directions were enflamed.


तेन तप्ता दिवं त्यक्त्वा ब्रह्मलोकं ययु: सुरा: ।

धात्रे विज्ञापयामासुर्देवदेव जगत्पते ॥६॥


तेन तप्ता: दिवम् त्यक्त्वा
by that scorched, the heaven abandoning
ब्रह्म-लोकम् ययु: सुरा:
to Brahmaa's abode went the gods
धात्रे विज्ञापयामासु:-
to Brahmaa (they) submitted
देव-देव जगत्पते
'O god of gods, the Ruler of the worlds!

The gods, scorched by that fire, left the heaven and went to the abode of Brahmaa, and submitted thus to Brahmaa, 'O god of the gods, O creator of the worlds,….


दैत्येन्द्रतपसा तप्ता दिवि स्थातुं न शक्नुम: ।

तस्य चोपशमं भूमन् विधेहि यदि मन्यसे ।

लोका न यावन्नङ्क्ष्यन्ति बलिहारास्तवाभिभू: ॥७॥


दैत्येन्द्र-तपसा तप्ता:
by the demon's chief's asceticism, tormented
दिवि स्थातुम् न शक्नुम:
in the heaven to stay are not able
तस्य च-उपशमम् भूमन्
its remedy, O lord of the universe!
विधेहि यदि मन्यसे
devise if (you) deem fit
लोका: न यावत्-नङ्क्ष्यन्ति
the worlds do not until perish,
बलिहारा:-तव-अभिभू:
the tribute carriers you to attack wanting

'We are tormented by the asceticism of the lord of the demons, Hiranyakashipu. O lord of the universe! We are unable to stay in the heaven. If you deem fit, do devise its remedy, before the tribute carrier worlds perish. He means to attack you also.


तस्यायं किल सङ्कल्पश्चरतो दुश्चरं तप: ।

श्रूयतां किं न विदितस्तवाथापि निवेदित: ॥८॥


तस्य-अयम् किल सङ्कल्प:-
his this, certainly is avowed purpose,
चरत: दुश्चरम् तप:
while conducting the difficult austerities
श्रूयताम् किम् न विदित:-
do listen, is not known
तव-अथ-अपि निवेदित:
to you, then also is submitted

Is it not known to you, what certainly is his avowed purpose of conducting the difficult austerities? Yet, as submitted by us, do listen.


सृष्ट्वा चराचरमिदं तपोयोगसमाधिना ।

अध्यास्ते सर्वधिष्ण्येभ्य: परमेष्ठी निजासनम् ॥९॥


सृष्ट्वा चर-अचरम्-इदम्
having created the mobile and immobile this
तप:-योग-समाधिना
by austerities, Yoga and contemplation
अध्यास्ते सर्व-धिष्ण्येभ्य:
occupies all the spheres
परमेष्ठी निज-आसनम्
Brahmaa own abode

Brahmaa, having created this mobile and immobile world, he occupies his own abode above all the spheres.


तदहं वर्धमानेन तपोयोगसमाधिना ।

कालात्मनोश्च नित्यत्वात्साधयिष्ये तथाऽऽत्मन: ॥१०॥


तत्-अहम् वर्धमानेन
that I, by the increasing
तप:-योग-समाधिना
austerities, Yoga and concentration
काल-आत्मनो:-च नित्यत्वात्-
of Time and Soul being eternal
साधयिष्ये तथा-आत्मन:
will accomplish like that for myself

So that, I, by my increasing austerities, Yoga and concentration, and because Time and Soul are eternal, will acquire that (position) for myself.


अन्यथेदं विधास्येऽहमयथापूर्वमोजसा ।

किमन्यै: कालनिर्धूतै: कल्पान्ते वैष्णवादिभि: ॥११॥


अन्यथा-इदम् विधास्ये-अहम्-
otherwise, this will accomplish I
अयथा-पूर्वम्-ओजसा
not like before, by strength
किम्-अन्यै: काल-निर्धूतै:
what of the other by Time destroyed
कल्प-अन्ते वैष्णव-आदिभि:
at the end of the Kalpa, of Vishnu and others

Otherwise, I will accomplish this, that is, change the creation into like never before, by my sheer strength. Of what use are to me the realms of Vishnu and others, which are destroyed at the end of the Kalpa.


इति शुश्रुम निर्बन्धं तप: परममास्थित: ।

विधत्स्वानन्तरं युक्तं स्वयं त्रिभुवनेश्वर ॥१२॥


इति शुश्रुम निर्बन्धम्
this we heard, haughtily
तप: परमम्-आस्थित:
in austerities severe is engaged
विधत्स्व-अनन्तरम् युक्तम्
take action immediately proper
स्वयम् त्रिभुवनेश्वर
yourself, O lord! of the three worlds

We have heard that having haughtily deciding thus, he has engaged himself in severe austerities. O lord! of the three worlds, do take the proper action immediately, by yourself.


तवासनं द्विजगवां पारमेष्ठ्यं जगत्पते ।

भवाय श्रेयसे भूत्यै क्षेमाय विजयाय च ॥१३॥


तव-आसनम् द्विज-गवाम्
your (exalted) position, for the Braahmanas and cows
पारमेष्ठ्यम् जगत्पते
supremely exalted, O! lord of the universe
भवाय श्रेयसे भूत्यै
is for the growth, happiness, prosperity,
क्षेमाय विजयाय च
protection and triumph

O! lord of the universe, your exalted position is for the growth, happiness, prosperity, protection and triumph of the Braahmanas and the cows.


इति विज्ञापितौ देवैर्भगवानात्मभूर्नृप ।

परीतो भृगुदक्षाद्यैर्ययौ दैत्येश्वराश्रमम् ॥१४॥


इति विज्ञापितौ देवै:-
thus informed by the gods,
भगवान्-आत्मभू:-नृप
the glorious self-born (Brahmaa), O King!
परीत: भृगु-दक्ष-आद्यै:-
accompanied by Bhrigu, Daksha and others
ययौ दैत्य-ईश्वर-आश्रमम्
went to the demon chief's hermitage

O King! Thus requested by the gods, the glorious self-born Brahmaa, accompanied by the sages Bhrigu, Daksha and others, went to the hermitage of the demon chief, Hiranyakashipu.


न ददर्श प्रतिच्छन्नं वल्मीकतृणकीचकै: ।

पिपीलिकाभिराचीर्णमेदस्त्वङ्मांसशोणितम् ॥१५॥


न ददर्श प्रतिच्छन्नम्
did not see covered
वल्मीक-तृण-कीचकै:
by ant-hills, grass, bamboos,
पिपीलिकाभि:-आचीर्ण-
by the ants consumed
मेद:-त्वक्-मांस-शोणितम्
fat, skin, flesh and blood

Brahmaa did not see him, covered with ant-hills, grass, and bamboos, and whose fat, skin, flesh and blood had been drawn away by the ants.


तपन्तं तपसा लोकान् यथाभ्रापिहितं रविम् ।

विलक्ष्य विस्मित: प्राह प्रहसन् हंसवाहन: ॥१६॥


तपन्तम् तपसा लोकान्
scorching by asceticism, the worlds
यथा-अभ्र-अपिहितम् रविम्
like by clouds covered the sun,
विलक्ष्य विस्मित: प्राह
saw (him) amazed, and said
प्रहसन् हंस-वाहन:
laughingly, the swan mounted (Brahmaa)

The swan mounted Brahmaa was amazed to see him scorching the worlds, by his asceticism, like the sun covered by the clouds. He laughingly said to him, Hiranyakashipu….


ब्रह्मा-उवाच -
Brahmaa said -
उतिष्ठोतिष्ठ भद्रं ते तप:सिद्धोऽसि काश्यप ।

वरदोऽहमनुप्राप्तो व्रियतामीप्सितो वर: ॥१७॥


उतिष्ठ-उतिष्ठ भद्रम् ते
'arise, arise! good be with you!
तप:-सिद्ध:-असि काश्यप
by austerities, have achieved you, O Son of Kashyapa
वरद:-अहम्-अनुप्राप्त:
the boon giver I have come
व्रियताम्-ईप्सित: वर:
may ask for the desired boon'

'O Son of Kashyapa! Arise, arise. Good be with you. You have achieved the purpose by the austerities. I the boon Bestower have come. You may ask for your desired boon.'


अद्राक्षमहमेतत्ते हृत्सारं महदद्भुतम् ।

दंशभक्षितदेहस्य प्राणा ह्यस्थिषु शेरते ॥१८॥


अद्राक्षम्-अहम्-एतत्-ते
have seen I, this your
हृद्-सारम् महत्-अद्भुतम्
heart's stamina extraordinary and marvellous
दंश-भक्षित-देहस्य
by the gnats eaten body,
प्राणा: हि-अस्थिषु शेरते
the life alone in the bones hangs

'I have seen the extraordinary and marvellous stamina of your heart. Your body is eaten away by the gnats, and your life hangs just in the bones.'


नैतत्पूर्वर्षयश्चक्रूर्न करिष्यन्ति चापरे ।

निरम्बुर्धारयेत्प्राणान् को वै दिव्यसमा: शतम् ॥१९॥


न-एतत्-पूर्व-ऋषय:-चक्रू:-
not this, the former sages did
न करिष्यन्ति च-अपरे
will not do and the later
निरम्बु:-धारयेत्-प्राणान्
without water will sustain life
क: वै दिव्य-समा: शतम्
who indeed, for celestial years hundred

'What you have done, this, no former sage has done, nor will the later ones do. Who indeed will sustain the life force devoid of water, for a hundred celestial years?'


व्यवसायेन तेऽनेन दुष्करेण मनस्विनाम् ।

तपोनिष्ठेन भवता जितोऽहं दितिनन्दन ॥२०॥


व्यवसायेन ते-अनेन
by the perseverance of yours this
दुष्करेण मनस्विनाम्
difficult for the mind controlled
तप:-निष्ठेन भवता
asceticism intense by you
जित:-अहम् दिति-नन्दन
conquered am I, O! Delighter of Diti!'

'O Delighter of Diti! I am conquered by you of intent austerities, and by your perseverance which is difficult even for those who have controlled their minds.'


ततस्त आशिष: सर्वा ददाम्यसुरपुङ्गव ।

मर्त्यस्य ते अमर्त्यस्य दर्शनं नाफलं मम ॥२१॥


तत:-ते आशिष: सर्वा:
therefore to you blessings all
ददामि-असुर-पुङ्गव
(I) give, O Demons' chief!
मर्त्यस्य ते अमर्त्यस्य
for the mortal you, the immortal's
दर्शनम् न-अफलम् मम
sight, is not reward less mine

'O Chief of the Demons, therefore I give you all the blessings. To you, the mortal, the sight of me the immortal cannot be fruitless.'


नारद उवाच -
Naarada said -
इत्युक्त्वाऽऽदिभवो देवो भक्षिताङ्गं पिपीलिकै: ।

कमण्डलुजलेनौक्षद्दिव्येनामोघराधसा ॥२२॥


इत्युक्त्वा-आदि-भव: देव:
thus saying, the first-born deity (Brahmaa)
भक्षित-अङ्गम् पिपीलिकै:
on the eaten limbs by the ants
कमण्डलु-जलेन-औक्षत्-
the Kamandalu water sprinkled
दिव्येन-अमोघ-राधसा
divine, of unfailing virtue

Thus saying, the first-born deity, Brahmaa sprinkled the divine water of unfailing virtue from his Kamandalu, on the limbs of Hiranyakashipu, eaten up by the ants.


स तत्कीचकवल्मीकात् सहओजोबलान्वित: ।

सर्वावयवसम्पन्नो वज्रसंहननो युवा ।

उत्थितस्तप्तहेमाभो विभावसुरिवैधस: ॥२३॥


स: तत्-कीचक-वल्मीकात्
he, from that bamboo and ant hill
सह-ओजो-बल-अन्वित:
with potency, strength, endowed
सर्व-अवयव-सम्पन्न:
with all limbs perfect
वज्र-संहनन: युवा
adamantine frame, young
उत्थित:-तप्त-हेम-आभ:
emerged molten gold lustre
विभावसु:-इव-एधस:
fire like from fuel

He, Hiranyakashipu, emerged from the ant hill with bamboos, endowed with potency and strength, perfect in all limbs, young and with an adamantine frame, with a lustre like molten gold, like fire from fuel.


स निरीक्ष्याम्बरे देवं हंसवाहमवस्थितम् ।

ननाम शिरसा भूमौ तद्दर्शनमहोत्सव: ॥२४॥


स: निरीक्ष्य-अम्बरे देवम्
he perceiving, in the sky the deity
हंस-वाहम्-अवस्थितम्
swan mounted stationed
ननाम शिरसा भूमौ
bowed with the head on the ground
तत्-दर्शन-महोत्सव:
by his sight overjoyed

He was overjoyed when he perceived the swan mounted deity stationed in the sky. He bowed with his head on the ground.


उत्थाय प्राञ्जलि: प्रह्व: ईक्षमाणो दृशा विभुम् ।

हर्षाश्रुपुलकोद्भेदो गिरा गद्गदयाऽगृणात् ॥२५॥


उत्थाय प्राञ्जलि: प्रह्व:
rising, with joined palms, unwinking
ईक्षमाण: दृशा विभुम्
watching eyes, the lord,
हर्ष-अश्रु-पुलक-उद्भेद:
with joyous tears hair rising
गिरा गद्गदया-अगृणात्
speech choked praised

He arose, with his palms joined, with unwinking eyes watching the lord, his hair were raised on end, and with tears choked speech, he praised him.


हिरण्यकशिपु- उवाच -
Hiranyakashipu said -
कल्पान्ते कालसृष्टेन योऽन्धेन तमसाऽऽवृतम् ।

अभिव्यनग् जगदिदं स्वयंज्योति: स्वरोचिषा ॥२६॥


कल्प-अन्ते काल-सृष्टेन
at the end of the Kalpa,
य:-अन्धेन तमसा-आवृतम्
Who, by blinding dark Tamoguna enveloped
अभिव्यनग् जगत्-इदम्
manifested the universe this
स्वयम्-ज्योति: स्व-रोचिषा
The Self-effulgent, by own splendour

It was You, The Self-effulgent, Who manifested, by His own splendour, at the end of a Kalpa, this universe, enveloped in the blinding darkness of Tamoguna, which was created by Time.


आत्मना त्रिवृता चेदं सृजत्यवति लुम्पति ।

रज: सत्त्वतमोधाम्ने पराय महते नम: ॥२७॥


आत्मना त्रिवृता च-इदम्
by own self, in three forms, and this
सृजति-अवति लुम्पति
creates, protects and destroys
रज: सत्त्व-तम: धाम्ने
of Rajas, Sattva, Tamas, the Ground,
पराय महते नम:
All-pervading, The Supreme, Hail!

Hail! To The Supreme, All-pervading, The Ground of the three gunas, Rajas, Sattva and Tamas, Who by His own self, in three forms creates, protects and destroys this universe.


नम आद्याय बीजाय ज्ञानविज्ञानमूर्तये ।

प्राणेन्द्रियमनोबुद्धिविकारैर्व्यक्तिमीयुषे ॥२८॥


नम: आद्याय बीजाय
salutations to The Primary Cause
ज्ञान-विज्ञान-मूर्तये
knowledge and wisdom personification
प्राण-इन्द्रिय मन:-बुद्धि-
the vital airs, the senses, mind, intellect,
विकारै: व्यक्तिम्-ईयुषे
by modification manifested the elements

Salutations to The Primary Cause, who manifested Himself as the personification of knowledge, wisdom, the vital airs, the senses, mind and intellect, the modification of the elements.


त्वमीशिषे जगतस्तस्थुषश्च प्राणेन मुख्येन पति: प्रजानाम् ।

चित्तस्य चित्तेर्मनइन्द्रियाणां पतिर्महान् भूतगणाशयेश: ॥२९॥


त्वम्-ईशिषे जगत:-
You rule the universe,
तस्थुष:-च प्राणेन मुख्येन
mobile, immobile by Praana (vital air) the foremost
पति: प्रजानाम्
are The lord of the created beings
चित्तस्य चित्ते:-मन:-
of the reasoning, consciousness, mind and
इन्द्रियाणाम् पति:-महान्
the Indriyas, Controller Supreme
भूतगण-आशय-ईश:
the elements and their cravings, the lord

You rule the mobile and the immobile universe by controlling the foremost of the vital airs, the Praana. You are the Lord of the created beings. You are the Supreme Controller of their reasoning, consciousness, mind and Indriyas, and their cravings, as well as of the elements.


त्वं सप्ततन्तून् वितनोषि तन्वा त्रय्या चातुर्होत्रकविद्यया च ।

त्वमेक आत्माऽऽत्मवतामनादिरनन्तपार: कविरन्तरात्मा ॥३०॥


त्वम् सप्त-तन्तून्
You the seven sacrifices
वितनोषि तन्वा त्रय्या
bring forward, by (your) body, three (the Vedas)
चातुर्होत्रक-विद्यया च
and the ritual performing science of the officiating priest
त्वम्-एक: आत्मा-
You are The One Soul
आत्मवताम्-अनादि:-
of the embodied beings, beginingless,
अनन्त-पार: कवि:-अन्तरात्मा
endless, unlimited, wisdom and the Inner Controller

You bring forward the seven types of sacrifices, from Your three bodies, the Vedas, and the science of performing the rituals, from the four officiating priests. You are The One Soul of the embodied beings. You are beginingless, endless, and unlimited, the wisdom and The Inner Controller.


त्वमेव कालोऽनिमिषो जनानामायुर्लवाद्यावयवै: क्षिणोषि ।

कूटस्थ आत्मा परमेष्ठ्यजो महांस्त्वं जीवलोकस्य च जीव आत्मा ॥३१॥


त्वम्-एव काल:-अनिमिष:
You alone are The Time, without a wink
जनानाम्-आयु: लव-आदि-
of the people the life duration, by the wink and other
अवयवै: क्षिणोषि
divisions shorten, (cut off)
कूटस्थ आत्मा परमेष्ठी-
The Indwelling Self, of the most exalted position,
अज: महान्-त्वम्
the birth less, immutable You
जीव-लोकस्य च जीव: आत्मा
for beings and universe, life-giver of animate creation

You alone are The Time without a wink's time. You cut away the life duration of the people by the divisions like the wink and others. You are the Indwelling Self, of the most exalted position, The Birth less, Immutable to the beings and the universe, the life-giver of the animate creation.


त्वत्त: परं नापरमप्यनेजदेजच्च किञ्चिद् व्यतिरिक्तमस्ति ।

विद्या: कलास्ते तनवश्च सर्वा हिरण्यगर्भोऽसि बृहत्त्रिपृष्ठ: ॥३२॥


त्वत्-त: परम् न-अपरम्-
from You apart, cause nor effect
अति-अनेजत्-एजत्-च किञ्चिद्
also, immobile, mobile and anything
व्यतिरिक्तम्-आस्ते
different exist
विद्या: कला:-ते
knowledge and the branches (of knowledge) your
तनव:-च सर्वा:
bodies and all
हिरण्यगर्भ:-असि
You the Golden egg are
बृहत्-त्रिपृष्ठ:
the whole universe holding

Nothing is apart from You, cause or effect, immobile or mobile nothing exists as different from You. Knowledge and the branches of knowledge are Your bodies. You are the Golden egg holding the whole universe within You.


व्यक्तं विभो स्थूलमिदं शरीरं येनेन्द्रियप्राणमनोगुणांस्त्वम् ।

भुङ्क्षे स्थितो धामनि पारमेष्ठ्ये अव्यक्त आत्मा पुरुष: पुराण: ॥३३॥


व्यक्तम् विभो स्थूलम्-इदम्
visible (universe) O All-pervading Lord! is physical this
शरीरम् येन-इन्द्रिय-प्राण-
body, by which the senses, the vital airs,
मन:-गुणान्-त्वम्
the mind, the Gunas, You
भुङ्क्षे स्थित: धामनि
enjoy, remaining in (Your) state
पारमेष्ठ्ये अव्यक्त: आत्मा
the most exalted, the unmanifest Spirit
पुरुष: पुराण:
The Person Primary

'O All-pervading Lord! This visible universe is Your physical body, by which You enjoy the sense, the vital airs, the mind, the Gunas, remaining in Your most exalted state, that of the unmanifest Spirit, The Primal Person.'


अनन्ताव्यक्तरूपेण येनेदमखिलं ततम् ।

चिदचिच्छक्तियुक्ताय तस्मै भगवते नम: ॥३४॥


अनन्त-अव्यक्त-रूपेण
in infinite and unmanifest form
येन-इदम्-अखिलम् ततम्
by which this entire (universe) is pervaded
चित्-अचित्-शक्ति-युक्ताय
with illumination and obscuration power endowed
तस्मै भगवते नम:
for Him The All-mighty Lord I bow

I bow to that All-mighty Lord, by Whose infinite and unmanifest form this entire universe is pervaded, Who is endowed with the power of illumination and obscuration.


यदि दास्यस्यभिमतान् वरान्मे वरदोत्तम ।

भूतेभ्यस्त्वद्विसृष्टेभ्यो मृत्युर्मा भून्मम प्रभो ॥३५॥


यदि दास्यसि-अभिमतान्
if, (You) confer the desired
वरान्-मे वरद-उत्तम
boons to me, O Chief Bestower of boons!
भूतेभ्य:-त्वत्-विसृष्टेभ्य:
by the beings by You created
मृत्यु:-मा भूत्-मम प्रभो
death may not occur my, O Lord!

'O Lord! O Chief Bestower of boons! If You may confer on me , my desired boons, may my death not occur by the beings created by You.'


नान्तर्बहिर्दिवा नक्तमन्यस्मादपि चायुधै: ।

न भूमौ नाम्बरे मृत्युर्न नरैर्न मृगैरपि ॥३६॥


न-अन्त:-बहि:-दिवा नक्तम्-
not indoors, or outdoors, in day or night
अन्यस्मात्-अपि च-आयुधै:
from others, also and by weapons
न भूमौ न-अम्बरे
not on earth, not in the sky
मृत्यु:-न नरै:-न मृगै:-अपि
death not by men, not by animals also

Let my death not be indoors or outdoors, in day or night by others also, and not by weapons, not on earth or in the sky, nor by men or animals.


व्यसुभिर्वासुमद्भिर्वा सुरासुरमहोरगै: ।

अप्रतिद्वन्द्वतां युद्धे ऐकपत्यं च देहिनाम् ॥३७॥


व्यसुभि:-वा-असुमद्भि:-वा
by inanimate, or by the animates
सुर-असुर-महा-उरगै:
by the gods the demons, or by great serpents,
अप्रतिद्वन्द्वताम् युद्धे
having no adversary in the battle,
ऐक-पत्यम् च देहिनाम्
and undisputed lordship over the embodied beings

Let not my death be caused by the animates or the inanimate, by the gods or the demons or even by the great serpents. May I have no adversary in the battle, and may I have undisputed lordship over the embodied beings.


सर्वेषां लोकपालानां महिमानं यथाऽऽत्मन: ।

तपोयोगप्रभावाणां यन्न रिष्यति कर्हिचित् ॥३८॥


सर्वेषाम् लोकपालानाम्
of all the guardians of the spheres
महिमानम् यथा-आत्मन:
glory, like (Your) own
तप:-योग-प्रभावाणाम्
(powers) of those by austerities and Yoga have gained
यत्-न रिष्यति कर्हिचित्
which does not lessen ever

Among all the guardians of all the spheres, may my glory be like that of Yours. May I have the unfailing mystic powers which are gained by those who practice austerities and Yoga.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पार्महंस्यां संहितायां सप्तमस्कन्धे हिरण्यकशिपोर्याचनं नाम तृतीय: अध्याय: ॥३॥


Thus ends the third discourse entitled 'Hiranyakashipu asks a number of boons (of Brahmaa),' in Book Seven of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
