नारद उवाच -
Naarada said -
एवं वृत: शतधृतिर्हिरण्यकशिपोरथ ।

प्रादात्तत्तपसा प्रीतो वरांस्तस्य सुदुर्लभान् ॥१॥


एवम् वृत: शतधृति:-
thus asked for, Brahmaa
हिरण्यकशिपो:-अथ
by Hiranyakashipu then,
प्रादात्-तत्-तपसा प्रीत:
conferred, by his asceticism pleased
वरान्-तस्य सुदुर्लभान्
boons his unattainable

Thus asked for by Hiranyakashipu, Brahmaa, pleased with his asceticism, conferred on him the unattainable boons .


ब्रह्मा-उवाच -
Brahmaa said -
तातेमे दुर्लभा: पुंसां यान् वृणीषे वरान् मम ।

तथापि वितराम्यङ्ग वरान् यदपि दुर्लभान् ॥२॥


तात-इमे दिर्लभा: पुंसाम्
'Child! these difficult to achieve by men
यान् वृणीषे वरान् मम
which you seek, the boons of me
तथा-अपि वितरामि-अङ्ग
even then, will confer, O Dear!
वरान् यत्-अपि दुर्लभान्
the boons though difficult to achieve

''Child! the boons which you seek of me, these are difficult to be achieved by men. O Dear One! Even then, I will confer the boons which are difficult to obtain.


ततो जगाम भगवानमोघानुग्रहो विभु: ।

पूजितोऽसुरवर्येण स्तूयमान: प्रजेश्वरै: ॥३॥


तत: जगाम भगवान्-
thereafter, went the glorious
अमोघ-अनुग्रह: विभु:
of unfailing grace Brahmaa
पूजित:-असुरवर्येण
worshipped by the demons' chief
स्तूयमान: प्रजेश्वरै:
extolled by the lords of the created beings

Thereafter, the glorious Brahmaa of unfailing grace went away to his abode, worshipped by the chief of the demons and being extolled by the lords of the created beings.


एवं लब्धवरो दैत्यो बिभ्रद्-हेममयं वपु: ।

भगवत्यकरोद् द्वेषं भ्रातुर्वधमनुस्मरन् ॥४॥


एवम् लब्ध-वर: दैत्य:
like this, obtaining the boons, the demon
बिभ्रद्-हेममयम् वपु:
donning golden body
भगवति-अकरोद् द्वेषम्
in The Lord nursed grudge
भ्रातु:-वधम्-अनुस्मरन्
brother's death constantly remembering

In this manner, the demon, Hiranyakashipu, having obtained the boons, and donning a golden body, nursed a grudge in The Lord, constantly reminded of his younger brother's death.


स विजित्य दिश: सर्वा लोकांश्च त्रीन् महासुर: ।

देवासुरमनुष्येन्द्रान् गन्धर्वगरुडोरगान् ॥५॥


स: विजत्य दिश: सर्वा:
he conquering, the directions all
लोकान्-च त्रीन् महासुर:
the worlds and three, the mighty demon
देव-असुर-मनुष्य-इन्द्रान्
the gods, demons, men, Indras,
गन्धर्व-गरुड-उरगान्
the Gandharvas, Gadudas, and serpents

He, the mighty demon, conquering all the directions, and the three worlds, the gods, the demons, the men, the Indras, the Gandharvas, Gadudas, and serpents,….


सिद्धचारणविद्याध्रानृषीन् पितृपतीन् मनून् ।

यक्षरक्ष:पिशाचेशान् प्रेतभूतपतीनथ ॥६॥


सिद्ध-चारण-विद्याध्रान्-
the Siddhas, Chaaranas, Vidyaadharas,
ऋषीन् पितृ-पतीन् मनून्
Rishis, the manes' chiefs, the Manus,
यक्ष-रक्ष: पिशाच-ईशान्
The Yakshas, the Raakshasas, the Pishaachas' lords,
प्रेत-भूतपतीन्-अथ
the Pretas' and the Bhutas' rulers, then,

The Siddhas, Chaaranas, Vidyaadharas, Rishis, the chiefs of the manes, the Manus, the Yakshas, the Raakshasas, the Pishaachas' lords, the Pretas' and the Bhutas' rulers, then…..


सर्वसत्त्वपतीञ्जित्वा वशमानीय विश्वजित् ।

जहार लोकपालानां स्थानानि सह तेजसा ॥७॥


सर्व-सत्त्व-पतीन्-जित्वा
all species lords winning,
वशम्-आनीय विश्वजित्
in control bringing them, the whole world conquered
जहार लोकपालानाम्
usurped the of the spheres the guardians'
स्थानानि सह तेजसा
thrones, along with their splendour

He won over the lords of all the species, and brought them under his control. He also conquered the whole world and usurped the thrones of the guardians of the spheres with their splendour.


देवोद्यानश्रिया जुष्टमध्यास्ते स्म त्रिविष्टपम् ।

महेन्द्रभवनं साक्षान्निर्मितं विश्वकर्मणा ।

त्रैलोक्यलक्ष्म्यायतनमध्युवासाखिलर्द्धिमत् ॥८॥


देव-उद्यान-श्रिया जुष्टम्-
by the celestial garden's (Nandana) beauty enriched,
अध्यास्ते स्म त्रिविष्टपम्
lived in the heaven
महेन्द्र-भवनम् साक्षात्-
in Indra's palace, by himself
निर्मितम् विश्वकर्मणा
built by Vishvakarmaa
त्रैलोक्य-लक्ष्मी-आयतनम्-
of the three worlds' wealth abode,
अध्युवास-अखिल-ऋद्धिमत्
took residence with all luxuries

He started living in heaven enriched by the celestial garden Nandana. He took up the residence of the mighty Indra, built by Vishvakarmaa himself, which was the abode of the wealth of all the three worlds, and lived there with all luxuries.


यत्र विद्रुमसोपाना महामारकता भुव: ।

यत्र स्फाटिककुड्यानि वैदूर्यस्तम्भपङ्क्तय: ॥९॥


यत्र विद्रुम-सोपाना:
where, coral stairs,
महा-मारकता भुव:
precious emerald floors,
यत्र स्फाटिक-कुड्यानि
where crystal walls
वैदूर्य-स्तम्भ-पङ्क्तय:
cat's-eyes pillars' rows

Where there were stairs of corals, floors of precious emeralds, where there were walls of crystals, and rows of pillars of cat's-eyes.


यत्र चित्रवितानानि पद्मरागासनानि च ।

पय:फेननिभा: शय्या मुक्तादामपरिच्छदा: ॥१०॥


यत्र चित्र-वितानानि
where designed canopies
पद्मराग-आसनानि च
rubies thrones and
पय:-फेन-निभा: शय्या
milk foam like beds
मुक्तादाम-परिच्छदा:
pearl strings (laced) covers

Where there were canopies of various designs, thrones of rubies, beds white like the foam of milk, and covers laced with strings of pearls.


कूजद्भिर्नूपुरैर्देव्य: शब्दयन्त्य इतस्तत: ।

रत्नस्थलीषु पश्यन्ति सुदती: सुन्दरं मुखम् ॥११॥


कूजद्भि:-नूपुरै:-देव्य:
with tinkling anklets, the ladies,
शब्दयन्त्य: इत:-तत:
sounding here and there
रत्न-स्थलीषु पश्यन्ति
in the precious stones' pavements looking,
सुदती: सुन्दरम् मुखम्
of charming teeth, beautiful face

The celestial ladies with charming teeth, sound their tinkling anklets here and there, and look at their beautiful faces in the precious stoned pavements.


तस्मिन्महेन्द्रभवने महाबलो महामना निर्जितलोक एकराट् ।

रेमेऽभिवन्द्याङ्घ्रियुग: सुरादिभि: प्रतापितैरूर्जितचण्डशासन: ॥१२॥


तस्मिन्-महेन्द्र-भवने
in that Indra's palace
महा-बल: महा-मना:
the all-mighty, the very proud
निर्जित-लोक एक-राट्
having conquered the worlds, the sole monarch
रेमे-अभिवन्द्य-अङ्घ्रि-युग:
revelled, respected feet both
सुर-आदिभि: प्रतापितै:-
by the gods and others oppressed,
ऊर्जित चण्ड-शासन:
by increased stern rule

The very proud, all-mighty Hiranyakashipu, having conquered the worlds, was the sole monarch. He revelled in Indra's palace. His two feet were tended by the oppressed gods and others, by his stern rule.


तमङ्ग मत्तं मधुनोरुगन्धिना विवृत्ताम्राक्षमशेषधिष्ण्यपा:।

उपासतोपायनपाणिभिर्विना त्रिभिस्तपोयोगबलौजसां पदम् ॥१३॥


तम्-अङ्ग मत्तम् मधुना-
him, O Dear One! The intoxicated by wine
उरु-गन्धिना विवृत्त-ताम्राक्षम्-
of great smell, rolling copper eyes
अशेष-धिष्ण्य-पा: उपासत-
by all the worlds' protectors waited
उपायन-पाणिभि:-विना त्रिभि:-
with gifts in hands, except the three
तप:-योग-बल-औजसाम् पदम्
of austerities, Yoga, strength, keen senses the reservoir

O Dear One! He, who was intoxicated by a wine of great smell, and whose coppery eyes were rolling all the time, he, who was the reservoir of austerities, Yoga, strength, and keen senses, was waited upon by all the protectors of the worlds, with gifts in their hands, except by the three, (Brahmaa, Vishnu and Shiva).


जगुर्महेन्द्रासनमोजसा स्थितं विश्वावसुस्तुम्बुरुरस्मदादय: ।

गन्धर्वसिद्धा ऋषयोऽस्तुवन्मुहुर्विद्याधरा अप्सरसश्च पाण्डव ॥१४॥


जगु:-महेन्द्र-आसनम्-ओजसा
usurped Indra's throne by force
स्थितम् विश्वावसु:-तुम्बुरु:-
occupying (it) by Vishwaavasu, Tumburu,
अस्मत्-आदय:
myself, and others,
गन्धर्व-सिद्धा:-ऋषय:-
the Gandharvas, the Siddhas, the Rishis,
अस्तुवन्-मुहु:-विद्याधरा:
extolled again and again, the Vidyaadharas,
अप्सरस:-च पाण्डव
the Apsaras and, O Son of Paandus!

O Son of Paandus! Yudhisthira! He had usurped the throne of Indra and occupied it with force. His glories were sung of, again and again, by Vishwaavasu, Tumburu, myself, and others, the Gandharvas, the Siddhas, the Rishis, the Vidyaadharas and the Apsaraas.


स एव वर्णाश्रमिभि: क्रतुभिर्भूरदक्षिणै: ।

इज्यमानो हविर्भागानाग्रहीत् स्वेन तेजसा ॥१५॥


स: एव वर्ण-आश्रमिभि:
he alone by the (people) of Varnas and Aashramas,
क्रतुभि: भू:-अदक्षिणै:
by sacrifices, of liberal gifts,
इज्यमान: हवि:-भागान्-
being propitiated, the sacrificial offerings
अग्रहीत् स्वेन तेजसा
appropriated by his might

He alone was propitiated in the sacrifices of liberal gifts, conducted by the people of various Varnas and Aashramas, and he only appropriated the sacrificial offerings by his own might.


अकृष्टपच्या तस्यासीत् सप्तद्वीपवती मही ।

तथा कामदुधा द्यौस्तु नानाश्चर्यपदं नभ: ॥१६॥


अकृष्ट-पच्या तस्य-आसीत्
unploughed, yielded produce, for him were
सप्त-द्वीपवती मही
of seven divisions' the earth
तथा काम-दुधा द्यौ:-तु
and desired showered the heavens, indeed
नाना-आश्चर्य-पदम् नभ:
various wonders contained the sky

For him, the earth with its seven divisions, yielded produce, unploughed. The heavens showered everything desired, and the skies presented various wonderful phenomenon.


रत्नाकराश्च रत्नौघांस्तत्पत्न्यश्चोहुरूर्मिभि: ।

क्षारसीधुघृतक्षौद्रदधिक्षीरामृतोदका: ॥१७॥


रत्नाकरा:-च रत्नौघान्-
the oceans, and, heaps of jewels
तत्-पत्न्य:-च-ऊहु:-उर्मिभि:
their wives and took to them on the waves
क्षारसीधु-घृत-क्षौद्र-
salted water, clarified butter, sugar-cane juice,
दधि-क्षीर-अमृत-उदका:
curd, milk, pure water

The seven oceans contained salted water, clarified butter, sugar-cane juice, curd, milk, pure water, and their wives, the rivers carried to them on their waves heaps of jewels.


शैला द्रोणीभिराक्रीडं सर्वर्तुषु गुणान् द्रुमा: ।

दधार लोकपालानामेक एव पृथग्गुणान् ॥१८॥


शैला: द्रोणीभि:-आक्रीडम्
the mountains by their vallies (provided) playgrounds
सर्व-ऋतुषु गुणान् द्रुमा:
in all seasons, the fruits the trees
दधार लोकपालानाम्-
possessed of all the guardians of the directions
एक: एव पृथक्-गुणान्
singly only, different qualities

For him, the mountains provided the vallies as play grounds. The trees bore fruits and flowers in all seasons. He, alone, singly possessed all the different qualities of all the guardians of the directions.


स इत्थं निर्जितककुबेकराड् विषयान् प्रियान् ।

यथोपजोषं भुञ्जानो नातृप्यदजितेन्द्रिय: ॥१९॥


स: इत्थम् निर्जित-ककुभ्-
he like this, conquering the four quarters
एकराट् विषयान् प्रियान्
the singular monarch, objects beloved
यथा-उपजोषम् भुञ्जान:
as he pleased, enjoying
न-अतृप्यत्-अजित-इन्द्रिय:
did not feel satisfied, (for) unsubdued senses and mind

Like this, he was the singular monarch having conquered the four quarters. He did not feel satiated, though he enjoyed his beloved objects at will, because he had not subdued his senses and the mind.


एवमैश्वर्यमत्तस्य दृप्तस्योच्छास्त्रवर्तिन: ।

कालो महान् व्यतीयाय ब्रह्मशापमुपेयुष: ॥२०॥


एवम्-ऐश्वर्य-मत्तस्य
in this way, by power drunk
दृप्तस्य-उच्छास्त्र-वर्तिन:
arrogant, the injunctions of the scripture violating
काल: महान् व्यतीयाय
time much slipped
ब्रह्म-शापम्-उपेयुष:
of Braahmana's curse having incurred

In this way, he, Hiranyakashipu, was drunk with power and pelf, and became arrogant, and violated the injunctions of the scriptures, and much time passed by him, when he was cursed by the Braahmanas.


तस्योग्रदण्डसंविग्ना: सर्वे लोका: सपालका: ।

अन्यत्रालब्धशरणा: शरणं ययुरच्युतम् ॥२१॥


तस्य-उग्र-दण्ड-संविग्ना:
by his stern rule unnerved
सर्वे लोका: सपालका:
all the worlds, along with the guardians
अन्यत्र-अलब्ध-शरणा:
elsewhere not finding shelter
शरणम् ययु:-अच्युतम्
in shelter went to immortal Lord Vishnu

Unnerved by his stern rule and not finding protection elsewhere, the worlds along with their guardians, resorted to the shelter of The Immortal Lord Vishnu.


तस्यै नमोऽस्तु काष्ठायै यत्रात्मा हरिरीश्वर: ।

यद्गत्वा न निवर्तन्ते शान्ता संन्यासिनोऽमला: ॥२२॥


तस्यै नम:-अस्तु काष्ठायै
to that salutations may be the quarter,
यत्र-आत्मा हरि:-ईश्वर:
where The Universal Spirit, Hari, The All mighty (resides)
यत्-गत्वा न निवर्तन्ते
where having gone to, do not return
शान्ता: संन्यासिन:-अमला:
the tranquil recluses pure

'May salutations be to that quarter, where The Universal Spirit, Shree Hari, The All-mighty resides. The tranquil minded pure hearted recluses, having gone to where, do not return (to the mortal plane).'


इति ते संयतात्मान: समाहितधियोऽमला: ।

उपतस्थुर्हृषीकेशं विनिद्रा वायुभोजना: ॥२३॥


इति ते संयत-आत्मान:
thus, they, with controlled mind
समाहित-धिय:-अमला:
and collected intellect, rid of impurities
उपतस्थु:-हृषीकेशम्
praised, Lord Vishnu (Controller of the senses)
विनिद्रा: वायु-भोजना:
without sleep, on air subsisting

In this manner, they, with their minds controlled and collected intellect, rid of all impurities, without sleeping, and subsisting on air, praised, Lord Vishnu, (Controller of the senses).


तेषामाविरभूद्वाणी अरूपा मेघनि:स्वना ।

सन्नादयन्ती ककुभ: साधूनामभयङ्करी ॥२४॥


तेषाम्-आवि:-अभूत्-वाणी
for them produced was voice
अरूपा मेघ-निस्वना
formless, like clouds rumbling
सन्नादयन्ती ककुभ:
echoing the directions
साधूनाम्-अभयङ्करी
the righteous rendering fearless.

For them a voice was produced, which was formless, rumbling like the clouds, echoing the directions, rendering the righteous men fearless.


मा भैष्ट विबुधश्रेष्ठा: सर्वेषां भद्रमस्तु व: ।

मद्दर्शनं हि भूतानां सर्वश्रेयोपपत्तये ॥२५॥


मा भैष्ट विबुध-श्रेष्ठा:
' Do not be afraid! O scions of gods!
सर्वेषाम् भद्रम्-अस्तु व:
of all well may be to you
मत्-दर्शनम् हि भूतानाम्
my sight alone, of the created beings
सर्व-श्रेय-उपपत्तये
for all well being is conducive

'O scions of gods! Do not be afraid. May all be well with you all. For all the created beings, my sight is conducive for attaining all blessings.'


ज्ञातमेतस्य दौरात्म्यं दैतेयापसदस्य च ।

तस्य शान्तिं करिष्यामि कालं तावत्प्रतीक्षत ॥२६॥


ज्ञातम्-एतस्य दौरात्म्यम्
is known his wickedness
दैतेय-अपसदस्य च
the demon vile, and
तस्य शान्तिम् करिष्यामि
his end will bring
कालम् तावत्-प्रतीक्षत
time till then await

'The wickedness of this vile demon is known to Me. I will bring peace by his end. Wait till that time.'


यदा देवेषु वेदेषु गोषु विप्रेषु साधुषु ।

धर्मे मयि च विद्वेष: स वा आशु विनश्यति ॥२७॥


यदा देवेषु वेदेषु गोषु
when towards the gods, the Vedas, the bovine race,
विप्रेषु साधुषु
the Braahmanas, the pious souls,
धर्मे मयि च विद्वेष:
righteousness, Me and animosity,
स: वा आशु विनश्यति
he or soon perishes

When, animosity develops in someone, towards the gods, the Vedas, the bovine race, the Braahmanas, the pious souls, righteousness and Me, he soon perishes.


निर्वैराय प्रशान्ताय स्वसुताय महात्मने ।

प्रह्लादाय यदा द्रुह्येत्-हनिष्येऽपि वरोर्जितम् ॥२८॥


निर्वैराय प्रशान्ताय
for the free from animosity, calm,
स्व-सुताय महात्मने
own son the high souled
प्रह्लादाय यदा द्रुह्येत्-
Prahlaada when is against
हनिष्ये-अपि वर-ऊर्जितम्
will kill (him) though boons having earned

When he is against his own son Prahlaada, who is free from animosity, is calm, and is high souled, I will kill him, though he has earned the boons from Brahmaa.


नारद उवाच -
Naarada said -
इत्युक्ता लोकगुरुणा तं प्रणम्य दिवौकस: ।

न्यवर्तन्त गतोद्वेगा मेनिरे चासुरं हतम् ॥२९॥


इति-उक्ता: लोक-गुरुणा
thus told, by the Preceptor of the Universe, Lord Vishnu,
तम् प्रणम्य दिवौकस:
Him bowing down to, the gods' group
न्यवर्तन्त गत-उद्वेगा:
returned, free from anxiety
मेनिरे च-असुरम् हतम्
considering and the demon killed

Thus, after being addressed by the Preceptor of the universe, Lord Vishnu, the group of gods retuned, relieved of all anxiety, and considering the demon as good as killed.


तस्य दैत्यपते: पुत्राश्चत्वार: परमाद्भुता: ।

प्रह्लादोऽभून्महांस्तेषां गुणैर्महदुपासक: ॥३०॥


तस्य दैत्यपते: पुत्रा:-
of his, the demon chief's sons
चत्वार: परम-अद्भुता:
four, most marvellous
प्रह्लाद:-अभूत्-महान्-तेषाम्
Prahlaada became pre-eminent among them
गुणै:-महत्-उपासक:
by virtues, a great devotee

His, the demons chief's were four most marvellous sons. Among them, Prahlaada became pre-eminent by his virtues, and being a great devotee.


ब्रह्मण्य: शीलसम्पन्न: सत्यसन्धो जितेन्द्रिय: ।

आत्मवत्सर्वभूतानामेक: प्रियसुहृत्तम: ॥३१॥


ब्रह्मण्य: शील-सम्पन्न:
he was in amiability rich
सत्य-सन्ध: जित-इन्द्रिय:
true to his words, had controlled his senses
आत्म-वत्-सर्व-भूतानाम्-
self like, for all the living beings
एक: प्रिय-सुहृत्तम:
the one dear friend greatest

He, Prahlaada was rich in amiability, true to his words, had controlled his senses, treated all the living beings as his own self and was the one dear great friend.


दासवत्संनतार्याङ्घ्रि: पितृवद्दीनवत्सल: ।

भ्रातृवत्सदृशे स्निग्धो गुरुष्वीश्वरभावन: ।

विद्यार्थरूपजन्माढ्यो मानस्तम्भविवर्जित: ॥३२॥


दास-वत्-संनत-आर्य-अङ्घ्रि:
like a servant, he bowed to the venerable feet
पितृवत्-दीन-वत्सल:
father like to the poor kind
भ्रातृवत्-सदृशे स्निग्ध:
brother like to the equals respectful
गुरुषु-ईश्वर-भावन:
to the elders, with God-like feeling
विद्या-अर्थ-रूप-जन्म-आढ्य:
learning, wealth, personal charm and high birth
मान-स्तम्भ-विवर्जित:
(yet) pride and arrogance devoid of

He, Prahlaada was like a servant to the venerable and bowed down at their feet, he was kind to the poor like a father, he was brother like to the equals, respectful to the elders with a God-like feeling for them. Though bestowed with learning, wealth, personal charm, and high birth, he was devoid of pride and arrogance.


नोद्विग्नचित्तो व्यसनेषु नि:स्पृह: श्रुतेषु दृष्टेषु गुणेष्ववस्तुदृक् ।

दान्तेन्द्रियप्राणशरीरधी: सदा प्रशान्तकामो रहितासुरोऽसुर: ॥३३॥


न-उद्विग्न-चित्त:
a unperturbed heart
व्यसनेषु नि:स्पृह:
in sense pleasures uninterested
श्रुतेषु दृष्टेषु
in heard and seen
गुणेषु-अवस्तु-दृक्
objects unreal looking upon
दान्त-इन्द्रिय:
in control of the Indriyas,
प्राण-शरीर-धी:
breath, body and intellect
सदा प्रशान्त-काम:
always much peace loving
रहित-आसुर:-असुर:
devoid of demonic (nature), though a demon

He was unperturbed at heart, uninterested in sense pleasure, looked upon heard and seen objects as unreal, was in control of his Indriyas, breath, body, and intellect, was always much peace loving, and though a demon by birth, was devoid of demonic tendencies.


यस्मिन्महद्गुणा राजन् गृह्यन्ते कविभिर्मुहु: ।

न तेऽधुनापि धीयन्ते यथा भगवतीश्वरे ॥३४॥


यस्मिन्-महत्-गुणा: राजन्
in whom, the noble qualities, O King!
गृह्यन्ते कविभि:-मुहु:
which are praised by the wise constantly
न ते-अधुना-अपि धीयन्ते
not they today also have diminished
यथा भगवति-ईश्वरे
just like the excellences in the Lord

O King Yudhisthira! In whom there are the noble qualities, which are constantly praised of, by the wise, have not diminished even today, just like the excellences of The Lord.


यं साधुगाथासदसि रिपवोऽपि सुरा नृप ।

प्रतिमानं प्रकुर्वन्ति किमुतान्ये भवादृशा: ॥३५॥


यम् साधु-गाथा-सदसि
whom, the noble souls' stories (recounting) assemblies
रिपव:-अपि सुरा: नृप
enemies also and the gods, O King!
प्रतिमानम् प्रकुर्वन्ति
a model (in virtues), hold,
किम्-उत्-अन्ये भवान्-दृशा:
what of, indeed others, you like

O King! In the assemblies where the stories of the noble souls are recounted, the enemies as well as the gods state him as an example of virtues, indeed, what of others like you?


गुणैरलमसंख्येयैर्माहात्म्यं तस्य सूच्यते ।

वासुदेवे भगवति यस्य नैसर्गिकी रति: ॥३६॥


गुणै:-अलम्-असंख्येयै:-
virtues enough innumerable
माहात्म्यम् तस्य सूच्यते
greatness his is indicated
वासुदेवे भगवति
in Vaasudeva The Lord
यस्य नैसर्गिकी रति:
whose inborn affinity

Enough enumerating of his innumerable virtues . His greatness is indicated in that he has an inborn affinity in The Lord Vaasudeva.


न्यस्तक्रीडनको बालो जडवत्तन्मनस्तया ।

कृष्णग्रहगृहीतात्मा न वेद जगदीदृशम् ॥३७॥


न्यस्त-क्रीडनक: बाल:
having given up play things, the child,
जडवत्-तत्-मन:-तया
like a dunce, because of, in Him mind absorbed
कृष्ण-ग्रह गृहीत-आत्मा
Krishna Spirit possessed soul
न वेद जगत्-ईदृशम्
did not know, the world as such

Even as a child having given up the play things, he was like a dunce, his mind being absorbed, and his soul possessed by The Krishna Spirit, he did not know the world as such.


आसीन: पर्यटन्नश्नन् शयान: प्रपिबन् ब्रुवन् ।

नानुसन्धत्त एतानि गोविन्दपरिरम्भित: ॥३८॥


आसीन: पर्यटन्-अश्नन्
sitting, walking, eating,
शयान: प्रपिबन् ब्रुवन्
sleeping, drinking, speaking,
न-अनुसन्धत्त एतानि
did not realize these (acts)
गोविन्द-परिरम्भित:
in Govinda arms folded

He did not realize that he was doing the acts of sitting, walking, eating, sleeping, drinking or speaking, because he always found himself folded in the arms of Govinda.


क्वचिद्रुदति वैकुण्ठचिन्ताशबल चेतन: ।

क्वचिद्-हसति सच्चिन्ताह्लाद उद्गायति क्वचित् ॥३९॥


क्वचित्-रुदति
at times cried
वैकुण्ठ-चिन्ता-
in The Lord's anxiousness
शबल चेतन:
engrossed in His thought
क्वचिद्-हसति
at times laughed
सत्-चिन्ता-आह्लाद
by The Lord's thought's joy
उद्गायति क्वचित्
sings loudly at times

In the anxiousness of The Lord, he would cry at time, at times he would laugh, engrossed in His thoughts, in the joy of the thought of The Lord, at times, he would sing loudly.


नदति क्वचिदुत्कण्ठो विलज्जो नृत्यति क्वचित् ।

क्वचित्तद्भावनायुक्तस्तन्मयोऽनुचकार ह ॥४०॥


नदति क्वचित्-उत्कण्ठ:
shrieked at times in full throat,
विलज्ज: नृत्यति क्वचित्
un-embarrassed danced at times
क्वचित्-तत्-भावना-युक्त:-
sometimes, His thoughts engrossed in
तन्मय:-अनुचकार ह
in Him merged imitated Him, indeed

At times, he shrieked in full throat, at times danced un-embarrassed, indeed, at times engrossed in His thoughts, merged in Him, imitated Him.


क्वचिदुत्पुलकस्तूष्णीमास्ते संस्पर्शनिर्वृत: ।

अस्पन्दप्रणयानन्दसलिलामीलितेक्षण: ॥४१॥


क्वचित्-उत्पुलक:
at times had his hair raised on end
तूष्णीम्-आस्ते
mute became
संस्पर्श-निर्वृत:
by the touch joyed
अस्पन्द-प्रणय-आनन्द-
was enraptured by the love's joy
सलिल-आमीलित-ईक्षण:
tears brimming half closed eyes

At times, he became mute and his hair were raised on ends, by the joy of His touch he was enraptured, by the constant love, his half closed eyes were brimming with joyful tears.


स उत्तमश्लोकपदारविन्दयोर्निषेवयाकिञ्चनसङ्गलब्धया ।

तन्वन् परां निर्वृतिमात्मनो मुहुर्दु:सङ्गदीनान्यमन:शमं व्यधात् ॥४२॥


स: उत्तम-श्लोक-पद-अरविन्दयो:-
he (Prahlaada), of excellent renowned feet lotuses'
निषेवया-अकिञ्चन-
serving, those claiming nothing as their own,
सङ्ग-लब्धया
by their company getting
तन्वन् पराम् निर्वृतिम्-आत्मन:
drawing supreme felicity for himself,
मुहु:-दु:सङ्ग-दीन-
again and again, by bad company of the miserable's, to other's minds
अन्यमन: शमम् व्यधात्
to others' minds peace brought

He, Prahlaada, by serving the feet lotuses of the excellent renowned, The Lord, got the company of those who claimed as nothing of their own, and so drew supreme felicity for himself, again and again. Rather, he also soothed the minds of those who were miserable because of evil company, and brought peace to them.


तस्मिन्महाभागवते महाभागे महात्मनि ।

हिरण्यकशिपू राजन्नकरोदघमात्मजे ॥४३॥


तस्मिन्-महा-भागवते
towards him, the great devotee,
महा-भागे महा-आत्मनि
the illustrious, the high-souled
हिरण्यकशिपू राजन्-
Hiranyakashipu, O King!
अकरोत्-अघम्-आत्मजे
committed sins, his son

O King! Towards such a great devotee of The Lord, the illustrious and high-souled, his son, Prahlaada, Hiranyakashipu committed sinful actions.


युधिष्ठिर उवाच -
Yudhisthira said -
देवर्ष एतदिच्छामो विदितुं तव सुव्रत ।

यदात्मजाय शुद्धाय पितादात् साधवे ह्यघम् ॥४४॥


देवर्षे एतत्-इच्छाम:
'O celestial sage! this we wish
विदितुम् तव सुव्रत
to know from you of excellent vows,
यत्-आत्मजाय शुद्धाय
why towards the son, righteous
पिता-अदात् साधवे हि-अघम्
father inflicted, to the noble, indeed sinful actions

'O Celestial sage of excellent vows! We want to know from you, why the father inflicted sinful actions on his righteous and noble son.'


पुत्रान् विप्रतिकूलान् स्वान् पितर: पुत्रवत्सला: ।

उपालभन्ते शिक्षार्थं नैवाघमपरो यथा ॥४५॥


पुत्रान् विप्रतिकूलान् स्वान्
sons refractory, own
पितर: पुत्र-वत्सला:
fathers, sons fond of
उपालभन्ते शिक्षा-अर्थम्
admonish for correcting purpose,
न-एव-अघम्-अपर: यथा
not even inflict sins, enemies like

The fathers, fond of their own sons, do admonish their refractory sons, for the purpose of correcting them, but they do not also inflict sinful actions on them like on enemies.


किमुतानुवशान् साधूंस्तादृशान् गुरुदेवतान् ।

एतत् कौतुहलं ब्रह्मन्नस्माकं विधम प्रभो ।

पितु: पुत्राय यद् द्वेषो मारणाय प्रयोजित: ॥४६॥


किम्-उत्-अनुवशान् साधून्-
what indeed, obedient, pious
तादृशान् गुरु-देवतान्
like those, the elders as deities (consider)
एतत् कौतुहलम् ब्रह्मन्-
this curiosity, O Holy one!
अस्माकम् विधम प्रभो
Of ours, remove, my lord,
पितु: पुत्राय यत् द्वेष:
of the father for the son that hostility
मारणाय प्रयोजित:
for death is directed

O Holy one, my lord! Do remove this curiosity of ours, as to how for such obedient and pious sons, who consider the elders as deities, is the hostility of the father directed towards the son's death.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां सप्तमस्कन्धे प्रह्लाद-चरिते चतुर्थोऽध्याय: ॥४॥


Thus ends the fourth discourse forming part of the narrative of Prahlaada, in Book Seven of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
