श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
अथो सुरा: प्रत्युपलब्धचेतस: परस्य पुंस: परयानुकम्पया ।

जघ्नुर्भृशं शक्रसमीरणादयस्तांस्तान् रणे यैरभिसंहता: पुरा ॥१॥


अथ: सुरा: प्रत्युपलब्ध-
then the gods having regained presence of mind
परस्य पुंस:
by the Supreme Person's
परया-अनुकम्पया
supreme grace
जघ्नु:-भृशम् शक्र-समीरण-
hit back forcefully Indra, Sameerana
आदय:-तान्-तान् रणे
and others, all of them in the battle
यै:-अभिसंहता: पुरा
by whom they were assaulted before

The, the gods, Indra Sameerana and others, who had regained their valour and presence of mind by the supreme grace of the Supreme Person, Lord Vishnu, hit back violently at all those Asuras who had assailed them before.


वैरोचनाय संरब्धो भगवान्पाकशासन: ।

उदयच्छत् यदा वज्रम् प्रजा हा हेति चक्रुशु: ॥२॥


वैरोचनाय संरब्ध:
on Bali, while fighting,
भगवान्-पाकशासन:
the glorious Indra
उदयच्छत् यदा वज्रम्
took up when the thunderbolt
प्रजा हा हा-इति चक्रुशु:
the people 'Alas! Alas!' thus shouted

While fighting, when the glorious Indra took up the thunderbolt to strike on Bali, the people started to shout, 'Alas! Alas!'.


वज्रपाणिस्तमाहेदं तिरस्कृत्य पुर: स्थितम् ।

मनस्विनं सुसम्पन्नं विचरन्तं महामृधे ॥३॥


वज्रपाणि:-तम्-आह-इदम्
with the thunderbolt in hand, to him said this
तिरस्कृत्य पुर: स्थितम्
insultingly, in front standing
मनस्विनम् सुसम्पन्नम्
the heroic, well equipped,
विचरन्तम् महा-मृधे
ranging in the great battle

Indra, with thunderbolt in hand, insultingly said this... to the heroic and well equipped Bali, who was standing in front, as he went about ranging the great battle.


नटवन्मूढ मायाभिर्मायेशान् नो जिगीषसि ।

जित्वा बालान् निबद्धाक्षान् नटो हरति तद् धनम् ॥४॥


नट-वत्-मूढ मायाभि:-
conjurer like stupid (you), by illusions,
माया-ईशान् न: जिगीषसि
the Maayaa lords, us, wish to conquer
जित्वा बालान् निबद्ध-अक्षान्
winning over children, by tying their eyes
नट: हरति तत् धनम्
the conjurer steals the wealth

O stupid you! Like a conjurer, by your illusions, you wish to conquer us, the lords of Maayaa. It is like a conjurer who ties the eyes of the children and steals their money.


आरुरुक्षन्ति मायाभिरुत्सिसृप्सन्ति ये दिवम् ।

तान्दस्यून्विधुनोम्यज्ञान्पूर्वस्माच्च पदादध: ॥५॥


आरुरुक्षन्ति मायाभि:-उत्-
wanting to ascend by Maayaa, indeed,
सिसृप्सन्ति ये दिवम्
and go above and beyond, they to heaven
तान्-दस्यून्-विधुनोमि-
them the robbers, throw (I)
अज्ञान्-पूर्वस्मात्-च पदात्-अध:
the foolish, from the former region below

Those foolish robbers, who want to ascend and go even beyond the heaven, them, I throw, even below from their former regions.


सोऽहं दुर्मायिनस्तेऽद्य वज्रेण शतपर्वणा ।

शिरो हरिष्ये मन्दात्मन्घटस्व ज्ञातिभि: सह ॥६॥


स:-अहम् दुर्मायिन:-ते-
that I, O adept in malevolent spells! Your
अद्य वज्रेण शत-पर्वणा
today, with the thunderbolt with hundred edges
शिर: हरिष्ये मन्द-आत्मन्-
head will sheer off, O dull witted one!
घटस्व ज्ञातिभि: सह
go meet your kinsmen

'O you adept in malevolent spells! Today I will sheer off your head with this hundred edged thunderbolt. O dull witted one! Go meet your kinsmen."


बलि:-उवाच -
Bali said -
सङ्ग्रामे वर्तमानानां कालचोदितकर्मणाम् ।

कीर्तिर्जयोऽजयो मृत्यु: सर्वेषां स्युरनुक्रमात् ॥७॥


सङ्ग्रामे वर्तमानानाम्
in wars involved,
काल-चोदित-कर्मणाम्
by Time (Destiny) impelled, according to deeds
कीर्ति:-जय:-अजय: मृत्यु:
fame, victory, defeat, death
सर्वेषाम् स्यु:-अनुक्रमात्
for all come in successions

For all those who are engaged in war, impelled by Time, or Destiny, according to their deeds, fame, victory, defeat and death come in succession.


तदिदं कालरशनं जना: पश्यन्ति सूरय: ।

न हृष्यन्ति न शोचन्ति तत्र यूयमपण्डिता: ॥८॥


तत्-इदम् काल-रशनम्
that this, Time's bondage
जना: पश्यन्ति सूरय:
men understand, the wise
न हृष्यन्ति न शोचन्ति
do not rejoice, do not grieve
तत्र यूयम्-अपण्डिता:
in that you are not enlightened

This is that bondage of Time, which the wise know and they do not rejoice or grieve in that case. You all are not enlightened in this.


न वयं मन्यमानानामात्मानं तत्र साधनम् ।

गिरो व: साधुशोच्यानां गृह्णीमो मर्मताडना: ॥९॥


न वयम् मन्यमानानाम्-
do not we believing
आत्मानम् तत्र साधनम्
yourself, in that (victory defeat etc) instrumental
गिर: व: साधु-शोच्यानाम्
words your, by the pious pitiable
गृह्णीम: मर्म-ताडना:
accept, heart pinching

You, who believe yourself to be instrumental in the fame victory etc., are to be pitied by the pious souls. We do not accept your heart piercing words.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इत्याक्षिप्य विभुं वीरो नाराचैर्वीरमर्दन: ।

आकर्णपूर्णैरहनदाक्षेपैराहतं पुन: ॥१०॥


इति-आक्षिप्य विभुम्
thus retorting the powerful (Indra),
वीर: नाराचै:-वीर-मर्दन:
the valiant (Bali) with arrows, the vanquisher of heroes,
आकर्ण-पूर्णै:-अहनत्-
till the ear pulled, struck,
आक्षेपै:-आहतम् पुन:
by retorts stung, again

The vanquisher of the heroes, valiant Bali thus retorted the powerful Indra, and struck him again with arrows drawn to the ear, him, who was already stung by retorts.


एवं निराकृतो देवो वैरिणा तथ्यवादिना ।

नामृष्यत् तदधिक्षेपं तोत्राहत इव द्विप: ॥११॥


एवम् निराकृत: देव:
in this manner, reproached the god,
वैरिणा तथ्य-वादिना
by the enemy truth speaking
न-अमृष्यत् तत्-अधिक्षेपम्
could not bear that insult
तोत्र-आहत: इव द्विप:
by a goad poked like an elephant

In this manner, when the god Indra was reproached by the truth speaking enemy, he could not bear the insult, just as elephant would not bear the poking of the goad.


प्राहरत् कुलिशं तस्मा अमोघं परमर्दन: ।

सयानो न्यपतद् भूमौ छिन्नपक्ष इवाचल: ॥१२॥


प्राहरत् कुलिशम् तस्मै
hurled the thunderbolt on him
अमोघम् पर-मर्दन:
the unfailing, foe vanquisher (Indra)
सयान: न्यपतद् भूमौ
along with the aerial car, fell on the ground,
छिन्न-पक्ष इव-अचल:
cut off wings, like a mountain

Indra, the foe vanquisher, hurled the unfailing thunderbolt at him. Bali fell, aerial car and all on the ground like a mountain with its wings chopped off.


सखायं पतितं दृष्ट्वा जम्भो बलिसख: सुहृत् ।

अभ्ययात् सौहृदं सख्युर्हतस्यापि समाचरन् ॥१३॥


सखायम् पतितम् दृष्ट्वा
friend fallen seeing
जम्भ: बलि-सख: सुहृत्
Jambha, Bali's friend and well wisher
अभ्ययात् सौहृदम् सख्यु:-
struck back, friendship of friend,
हतस्य-अपि समाचरन्
fallen though practicing

Seeing, his friend Bali fallen, Jambha a great friend and well-wisher of Bali, though fallen, attacked back, thus practicing true friendship.


स सिंहवाह आसाद्य गदामुद्यम्य रंहसा ।

जत्रावताडयच्छक्रं गजं च सुमहाबल: ॥१४॥


स: सिंह-वाह: आसाद्य
he, mounted on a lion, snatching
गदाम्-उद्यम्य रंहसा
a mace, approaching swiftly
जत्रौ-अताडयत्-शक्रम्
on the collar bone hit Indra,
गजम् च सुमहाबल:
the elephant (Airaawata) and with great power

He, mounted on a lion, snatched a mace and swiftly approached Indra, and with great power struck him violently on the collar-bone, and also the elephant Airaawata.


गदाप्रहारव्यथितो भृशं विह्वलितो गज: ।

जानुभ्यां धरणीं स्पृष्ट्वा कश्मलं परमं ययौ॥१५॥


गदा-प्रहार-व्यथित:
by the mace struck tormented
भृशम् विह्वलित: गज:
very much agonized elephant
जानुभ्याम् धरणीम् स्पृष्ट्वा
on the knees, on the earth resting
कश्मलम् परमम् ययौ
pain great underwent

The elephant Airaawata, struck by the mace, was very much tormented and agonized, then he went down on his knees on the ground and underwent great pain.


ततो रथो मातलिना हरिभिर्दशशतैर्वृत: ।

आनीतो द्विपमुत्सृज्य रथमारुरुहे विभु: ॥१६॥


तत: रथ: मातलिना
then, a chariot, by Maatali
हरिभि:-दश-शतै:-वृत:
with horses thousand drawn
आनीत: द्विपम्-उत्सृज्य
was brought, the elephant abandoning
रथम्-आरुरुहे विभु:
the chariot mounted, the lord (Indra)

Then, Maatali, Indra's charioteer, brought in a chariot, which was drawn by a thousand horses. Then, abandoning the elephant, lord Indra mounted that chariot.


तस्य तत् पूजयन् कर्म यन्तुर्दानवसत्तम: ।

शूलेन ज्वलता तं तु स्मयमानोऽहनन्मृधे ॥१७॥


तस्य तत् पूजयन्
his that admiring
कर्म यन्तु:-दानव-सत्तम:
the action of the charioteer, the demon chief
शूलेन ज्वलता तम् तु
by a dart burning, him indeed
स्मयमान:-अहनत्-मृधे
smilingly struck in the battle

Jambha, the chief of the demons, admiring that action of the charioteer, smilingly struck a burning dart at him, in the battle.


सेहे रुजं सुदुर्मर्षां सत्त्वमालम्ब्य मातलि: ।

इन्द्रो जम्भस्य संक्रुद्धो वज्रेणापाहरच्छिर: ॥१८॥


सेहे रुजम् सुदुर्मर्षाम्
bore the pain unbearable
सत्त्वम्-आलम्ब्य मातलि:
taking recourse to fortitude, Maatali
इन्द्र: जम्भस्य संक्रुद्ध:
Indra Jambha's enraged
वज्रेण-अपाहरत्-शिर:
by the thunderbolt severed the head

Taking recourse to fortitude, Maatali bore the unbearable pain. Enraged Indra severed the head of Jambha with the thunderbolt.


जम्भं श्रुत्वा हतं तस्य ज्ञातयो नारदादृषे: ।

नमुचिश्च बल: पाकस्तत्रापेतुस्त्वरान्विता: ॥१९॥


जम्भम् श्रुत्वा हतम्
Jambha, hearing killed
तस्य ज्ञातय: नारदात्-ऋषे:
his kinsmen from Naarada the sage
नमुचि:-च बल: पाक:-
Namuchi, Bala, Paaka,
तत्र-आपेतु:-त्वरान्विता:
there reached quickly

When Jambha's kinsmen heard from the sage Naarada of his being killed, Namuchi, Bala, Paaka, quickly reached there.


वचोभि: परुषैरिन्द्रमर्दयन्तोऽस्य मर्मसु ।

शरैरवाकिरन् मेघा धाराभिरिव पर्वतम् ॥२०॥


वचोभि: परुषै:-इन्द्रम्-
by words harsh, Indra
अर्दयन्त: अस्य मर्मसु
assailing to his heart
शरै:-अवाकिरन् मेघा:
by arrows showered clouds
धाराभि:-इव पर्वतम्
in torrents like the mountain

Assailing Indra, to the core of his heart with harsh words, he showered arrows on him as the clouds shower torrents on the mountains.


हरीन्दशशतान्याजौ हर्यश्वस्य बल: शरै: ।

तावद्भिरर्दयामास युगपल्लघुहस्तवान् ॥२१॥


हरीन्-दश-शतानि-आजौ
horses thousand in the battle,
हर्यश्वस्य बल: शरै:
of Indra, Bala with arrows
तावद्भि:-अर्दयामास
as many struck
युगपत्-लघु-हस्तवान्
simultaneously, swift of hand

In the battle, swift of hand Bala, simultaneously struck the thousand horses of Indra with as many arrows.


शताभ्यां मातलिं पाको रथं सावयवं पृथक् ।

सकृत्सन्धानमोक्षेण तदद्भुतमभूद् रणे ॥२२॥


शताभ्याम् मातलिम्
by hundred Maatali
पाक: रथम् स-अवयवम् पृथक्
Paaka the chariot, with parts separately
सकृत्-सन्धान-मोक्षेण
at a time fitting (the arrows) and charging
तत्-अद्भुतम्-अभूद् रणे
that wonder happened in the battle

Paaka, at a time, fitted and discharged a hundred arrows at Maatali and at all the separate parts of the chariot. This wonder took place in the battle.


नमुचि: पञ्चदशभि: स्वर्णपुङ्खैर्महेषुभि: ।

आहत्य व्यनदत्संख्ये सतोय इव तोयद: ॥२३॥


नमुचि: पञ्च-दशभि:
Namuchi with five and ten (fifteen)
स्वर्ण-पुङ्खै:-महा-इषुभि:
with golden hilts large arrows
आहत्य व्यनदत्-संख्ये
struck (Indra) and roared in the battle
सतोय इव तोयद:
full of water like a cloud

Namuchi with fifteen large arrows with golden hilts, struck Indra and roared in the battle like a cloud full of water.


सर्वत: शरकूटेन शक्रं सरथसारथिम् ।

छादयामासुरसुरा: प्रावृट्सूर्यमिवाम्बुदा: ॥२४॥


सर्वत: शर-कूटेन
from all sides with arrows net
शक्रम् स-रथ-सारथिम्
Indra with the chariot and the charioteer
छादयामासु:-असुरा: प्रावृट्-
covered the Asuras, in the rains
सूर्यम्-इव-अम्बुदा:
the Sun like the clouds

The Asuras covered on all sides, Indra along with the chariot and the charioteer, with a network of arrows, just as the clouds cover the Sun in the rains.


अलक्षयन्तस्तमतीव विह्वला विचुक्रुशुर्देवगणा: सहानुगा: ।

अनायका: शत्रुबलेन निर्जिता वणिक्पथा भिन्ननवो यथार्णवे ॥२५॥


अलक्षयन्त:-तम्-
not perceiving him
अतीव विह्वला: विचुक्रुशु:-
very perturbed, wailed
देव-गणा: सह-अनुगा:
the celestial troops, along with the retinue
अनायका: शत्रु-बलेन निर्जिता:
leaderless, by the enemy forces defeated
वणिक्-पथा भिन्न-नव:
trader on the way, broken boat
यथा-अर्णवे
like in the ocean

The celestial troops along with their retinue, leaderless, not seeing Indra, were very much perturbed and wailed, defeated by the enemy forces, just like a trader on the way has his boat broken in mid ocean.


ततस्तुराषाडिषुबद्धपञ्जराद् विनिर्गत: साश्वरथध्वजाग्रणी: ।

बभौ दिश: खं पृथिवीं च रोचयन् स्वतेजसा सूर्य इव क्षपात्यये ॥२६॥


तत:-तुराषाट्-
then, Indra
इषु-बद्ध-पञ्जरात् विनिर्गत:
from arrow built cage came out
स-अश्व-रथ-ध्वज-अग्रणी:
with the horses, chariot, the flag, charioteer
बभौ दिश: खम् पृथिवीम्
became the directions, sky, earth
च रोचयन् स्व-तेजसा
and enlighten by own lustre
सूर्य: इव क्षपात्यये
Sun like, at night passing

Then, Indra came out from the arrow built cage along with the horses, flag, chariot and charioteer, and the directions, sky and the earth were enlightened by his own radiance, just like the Sun's radiance after the night passes.


निरीक्ष्य पृतनां देव: परैरभ्यर्दितां रणे ।

उदयच्छद् रिपुं हन्तुं वज्रं वज्रधरो रुषा ॥२७॥


निरीक्ष्य पृतनाम् देव:
perceiving the army, the god,
परै:-अभ्यर्दिताम् रणे
by the enemies trampled in the battle
उदयच्छद् रिपुम् हन्तुम्
lifted up, the enemy to kill,
वज्रम् वज्रधर: रुषा
the thunderbolt, the thunderbolt wielder in anger

The thunderbolt wielding Indra perceived the trampled army of the gods in the battle, in a fit of rage he lifted up the thunderbolt to kill the enemy.


स तेनैवाष्टधारेण शिरसी बलपाकयो: ।

ज्ञातीनां पश्यतां राजञ्जहार जनयन्भयम् ॥२८॥


स: तेन-एव-अष्ट-धारेण
he, by that only, with eight edged
शिरसी बल-पाकयो:
on the heads of Bala and Paaka
ज्ञातीनाम् पश्यताम् राजन्-
as the kinsfolk looked on, O King!
जहार जनयन्-भयम्
cut off, instigating fright

O King! With that eight edged weapon only, he cut off the heads of Bala and Paaka, as the kinsfolk looked on instigated with fear.


नमुचिस्तद्वधं दृष्ट्वा शोकामर्षरुषान्वित: ।

जिघांसुरिन्द्रं नृपते चकार परमोद्यमम् ॥२९॥


नमुचि:-तत्-वधम् दृष्ट्वा
Namuchi, their death seeing
शोक-अमर्ष-रुषा-अन्वित:
by grief, indignation anger filled
जिघांसु:-इन्द्रम् नृपते
eager to kill Indra, O King!
चकार परम-उद्यमम्
put forth great effort

O King! Seeing their death, Namuchi was full of grief, indignation and anger and eager to kill Indra, he put forth great effort.


अश्मसारमयं शूलं घण्टावत् हेमभूषणम् ।

प्रगृह्याभ्यद्रवत् क्रुद्धो हतोऽसीति वितर्जयन् ।

प्राहिणोद् देवराजाय निनदन् मृगराडिव ॥३०॥


अश्म-सार-मयम् शूलम्
steel made of, lance
घण्टावत् हेम-भूषणम्
with bells, golden ornaments
प्रगृह्य-अभ्यद्रवत् क्रुद्ध:
getting hold of, darted, angered,
हत:-असि-इति वितर्जयन्
'Killed are you', thus threatening
प्राहिणोत् देव-राजाय
flung on the god's king Indra
निनदन् मृगराट्-इव
roaring lion like

He, full of anger, got hold of a steel lance adorned with golden bells and ornaments , and flung it at the king of the gods, threatening 'you are killed', roaring like a lion.


तदापतद् गगनतले महाजवं विचिच्छिदे हरिरिषुभि: सहस्रधा ।

तमाहनन्नृप कुलिशेन कन्धरे रुषान्वितस्त्रिदशपति: शिरो हरन् ॥३१॥


तदा-अपतत् गगन-तले
then, falling under the sky
महा-जवम् विचिच्छिदे हरि:-
with great speed, severed, Hari (Indra)
इषुभि: सहस्रधा
with arrows thousands
तम्-अहनत्-नृप कुलिशेन
him struck, O King! with the thunderbolt
कन्धरे रुषा-अन्वित:-
on the neck, with anger overcome
त्रिदशपति: शिर: हरन्
Indra head to cut

Then, Indra cut into a thousand pieces, the lance falling under the sky with great speed, O King. Then, overcome with anger, he struck him on the neck with his thunderbolt to sever his head.


न तस्य हि त्वचमपि वज्र ऊर्जितो बिभेद य: सुरपतिनौजसेरित: ।

तदद्भुतं परमतिवीर्यवृत्रभित् तिरस्कृतो नमुचिशिरोधरत्वचा ॥३२॥


न तस्य हि त्वचम्-अपि
not his indeed skin even
वज्र: ऊर्जित: बिभेद
the thunderbolt, hurled pierce
य: सुरपतिना-ओजसा-ईरित:
which by the gods' lord with might was charged
तत्-अद्भुतम् परम्-
that strange highly
अति-वीर्य-वृत्र-भित्
very powerful Vritraasura smasher
तिरस्कृत: नमुचि-शिरोधर-त्वचा
was sent back, by Namuchi's neck's skin

Indeed, the thunderbolt hurled with great might by the lord of the gods, could not even pierce the skin of Namuchi. This was highly strange that, the thunderbolt, the smasher of the very powerful Vritraasura, was insulted and sent back by the skin of the neck of Namuchi.


तस्मादिन्द्रोऽबिभेच्छत्रोर्वज्र: प्रतिहतो यत: ।

किमिदं दैवयोगेन भूतं लोकविमोहनम् ॥३३॥


तस्मात्-इन्द्र:-अबिभेत्-
because of that, Indra was afraid,
शत्रो:-वज्र: प्रतिहत: यत:
by the enemy the thunderbolt was repelled because
किम्-इदम् दैव-योगेन
'What is this! by fate conspiring
भूतम् लोक-विमोहनम्
has happened, the worlds' bewildering'

By that Indra became afraid, because the thunderbolt was repelled by the enemy, 'What is this! What is this conspiracy of fate, which has left the worlds bewildered.'


येन मे पूर्वमद्रीणां पक्षच्छेद: प्रजात्यये ।

कृतो निविशतां भारै: पतत्त्रै: पततां भुवि ॥३४॥


येन मे पूर्वम्-अद्रीणाम्
by which by me, formerly, of the mountains
पक्षच्छेद: प्रजा-अत्यये
wings were clipped, for the peoples' welfare
कृत: निविशताम् भारै:
done for falling, due to weight
पतत्त्रै: पतताम् भुवि
flying, settling on earth

It was this thunderbolt by which I formerly clipped off the wings of the flying mountains for the welfare of the people, as they would fall down due to their own weight and settle down on the earth.


तप: सारमयं त्वष्ट्रं वृत्रो येन विपाटित: ।

अन्ये चापि बलोपेता: सर्वास्त्रैरक्षयत्वच: ॥३५॥


तप: सारमयम् त्वष्ट्रम्
the austerities total of Twashtra,
वृत्र: येन विपाटित:
Vritra by which was torn apart
अन्ये च-अपि बल-उपेता:
others and also with power invested
सर्व-अस्त्रै:-अक्षय-त्वच:
by all weapons (were) unpierced skins

Vritra, who was the sum total of all the austerities of Twashtra, was torn apart by which thunderbolt, and many others invested with power, whose skin was not pierced by other weapons,…


सोऽयं प्रतिहतो वज्रो मया मुक्तोऽसुरेऽल्पके ।

नाहं तदाददे दण्डं ब्रह्मतेजोऽप्यकारणम् ॥३६॥


स:-अयम् प्रतिहत: वज्र:
that, this, failed the thunderbolt
मया मुक्त:-असुरे-अल्पके
by me hurled on the Asura petty
न-अहम् तत्-आददे दण्डम्
not I, that will take staff
ब्रह्म-तेज:-अपि-कारणम्
Brahma energy, even the cause

That kind of this thunderbolt has failed to strike, which was hurled by me on the petty Asura. I will not handle this mere staff any more, even though the case may be that it is energised by Brahma's power.


इति शक्रं विषीदन्तमाह वागशरीरिणी ।

नायं शुष्कैरथो नार्द्रैर्वधमर्हति दानव: ॥३७॥


इति शक्रम् विषीदन्तम्-
thus to Indra lamenting,
आह वाक्-अशरीरिणी
said, a voice formless
न-अयम् शुष्कै:-अथ: न-आर्द्रै:-
not this by dry, and then, by wet
वधम्-अर्हति दानव:
to be killed is worthy, the Daanava

Thus, to the lamenting Indra, a formless voice said, ' This Daanava is not worthy of being killed by dry or by wet things.'……


मयास्मै यद् वरो दत्तो मृत्युर्नैवार्द्रशुष्कयो: ।

अतोऽन्यश्चिन्तनीयस्ते उपायो मघवन् रिपो: ॥३८॥


मया-अस्मै यत् वर: दत्त:
by me to him, that boon was given
मृत्यु:-नैव-आर्द्र-शुष्कयो:
death not at all by wet and dry
अत:-अन्य:-चिन्तनीय:-ते
therefore another should be thought by you
उपाय: मघवन् रिपो:
means, O Indra! Of the enemy

O Indra! He was given that boon by me, by which his death will not at all be by wet or dry things. Therefore you must think of some other means to kill the enemy.


तां दैवीं गिरामाकर्ण्य मघवान्सुसमाहित: ।

ध्यायन् फेनमथापश्यदुपायमुभयात्मकम् ॥३९॥


ताम् दैवीम् गिराम्-आकर्ण्य
that divine voice hearing
मघवान्-सुसमाहित:
Indra concentrating
ध्यायन् फेनम्-अथ-अपश्यत्-
thought of foam, then, saw
उपायम्-उभय-आत्मकम्
the means of both kinds

Hearing that divine voice, Indra concentrated and thought and saw foam as the means of both kinds.


न शुष्केण न चार्द्रेण जहार नमुचे: शिर: ।

तं तुष्टुवुर्मुनिगणा माल्यैश्चावाकिरन्विभुम् ॥४०॥


न शुष्केण न च-आर्द्रेण
not by dry nor by wet
जहार नमुचे: शिर:
cut Namuchi's head
तम् तुष्टुवु:-मुनि-गणा:
him glorified the sages lots,
माल्यै:-च-अवाकिरन्-विभुम्
with garlands and showered the lord

Indra cut the head of Namuchi with neither dry nor with wet, foam. The hosts of sages glorified him and showered garlands on him.


गन्धर्वमुख्यौ जगतुर्विश्वावसुपरावसू ।

देवदुन्दुभयो नेदुर्नर्तक्यो ननृतुर्मुदा ॥४१॥


गन्धर्व-मुख्यौ जगतु:-
the Gandharva chiefs sang
विश्वावसु-परावसू
Vishwaavasu and Paraavasu,
देव-दुन्दुभय: नेदु:-
the gods trumpets sounded
नर्तक्य: ननृतु:-मुदा
dancers danced in delight

The chief of the Gandharvas sang in appreciation, the Vishwaavasu and the Paraavasu and the gods sounded trumpets and the dancers danced in delight.


अन्येऽप्येवं प्रतिद्वन्द्वान्वाय्वग्निवरुणादय: ।

सूदयामासुरस्त्रौघैर्मृगान्केसरिणो यथा ॥४२॥


अन्ये-अपि-एवम् प्रतिद्वन्द्वान्-
others also, like this, the rivals
वायु-अग्नि-वरुणादय:
Vaayu, Agni, Varuna and others
सूदयामासु:-अस्त्र-औघै:-
destroyed, with weapons great,
मृगान्-केसरिण:- यथा
the deers, lion like

The others also, led by Vaayu, wind, Agni, fire, Varuna, water, destroyed the rivals with great weapons, just as the lion would kill the deer.


ब्रह्मणा प्रेषितो देवान्देवर्षिर्नारदो नृप ।

वारयामास विबुधान्दृष्ट्वा दानवसंक्षयम् ॥४३॥


ब्रह्मणा प्रेषित: देवान्-
by Brahmaa was sent, to the gods
देवर्षि:-नारद: नृप
the celestial sage Naarada, O King!
वारयामास विबुधान्-
asked to stop, the gods,
दृष्ट्वा दानव-संक्षयम्
seeing the Daanava's extermination

O King! Brahmaa sent the celestial sage Naarada to the gods, and asked them to stop, seeing the extermination of the Daanavas.


नारद उवाच -
Naarada said -
भवद्भिरमृतं प्राप्तं नारायणभुजाश्रयै: ।

श्रिया समेधिता: सर्व उपारमत विग्रहात् ॥४४॥


भवद्भि:-अमृतम् प्राप्तम्
by you all nectar is obtained
नारायण-भुजा-आश्रयै:
by Naaraayana's arms resorting to
श्रिया समेधिता:
and by Shree enhanced
सर्वे उपारमत विग्रहात्
all of you cease from hostilities

'All of you have obtained the nectar by resorting to the arms of Shri Naaraayana, and your wellbeing is enhanced by Goddess Shree. Now you all cease the hostilities.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
संयम्य मन्युसंरभ्यं मानयन्तो मुनेर्वच: ।

उपगीयमानानुचरैर्ययु: सर्वे त्रिविष्टपम् ॥४५॥


संयम्य मन्यु-संरभ्यम्
giving up fighting, and anger controlling
मानयन्त: मुने:-वच:
obeying the sage's words
उपगीयमान-अनुचरै:-
glorified by the attendents,
ययु: सर्वे त्रिविष्टपम्
went all to heaven

They all gave up fighting and controlled the anger, obeying the words of the sage, and as their attendents glorified them, they all went away to heaven.


येऽवशिष्टा रणे तस्मिन् नारदानुमतेन ते ।

बलिं विपन्नमादाय अस्तं गिरिमुपागमन् ॥४६॥


ये-अवशिष्टा रणे तस्मिन्
those who survived in battle that
नारद-अनुमतेन ते
by Naarada's permission, they
बलिम् विपन्नम्-आदाय
Bali, dead taking
अस्तम् गिरिम्-उपागमन्
to Astaachala mountain went

Those who survived in that battle, took the dead body of Bali to the Astaachala mountain by the permission of Naarada.


तत्राविनष्टावयवान् विद्यमानशिरोधरान् ।

उशना जीवयामास संजीविन्या स्वविद्यया ॥४७॥


तत्र-अविनष्ट-अवयवान्
there, (with) undestroyed limbs
विद्यमान-शिरोधरान्
and intact necks
उशना जीवयामास
Shukraachaaryaa enlivened
संजीविन्या स्व-विद्यया
by Sanjeevanee, his knowledge

There, in the battle field, those whose limbs were not destroyed and whose necks were intact, Shukraachaaryaa enlivened them with his knowledge of Sanjeevanee.


बलिश्चोशनसा स्पृष्ट: प्रत्यापन्नेन्द्रियस्मृति: ।

पराजितोऽपि नाखिद्यल्लोकतत्त्वविचक्षण: ॥४८॥


बलि:-च-उशनसा स्पृष्ट:
Bali and by Shukraachaaryaa touched
प्रत्यापन्न-इन्द्रिय-स्मृति:
regained senses and memory
पराजित:-अपि न-अखिद्यत्-
defeated though, did not sorrow
लोक-तत्त्व-विचक्षण:
the world's truth expert knower

Bali also regained his senses and memory after being touched by Shukraachaaryaa. Even though he was defeated, he did not sorrow, as he was an expert in the knowledge of the truth of the world.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां अष्टमे स्कन्धे देवासुरसंग्राम एकादश: अध्याय: ॥११॥


Thus ends the eleventh discourse, forming part of the story related to the war between the gods and the demons, in Book Eight of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
