श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इति दानवदैतेया नविन्दन्नमृतं नृप ।

युक्ता: कर्माणि यत्ताश्च वासुदेवपराङ्मुखा: ॥१॥


इति दानव-दैतेया
thus, the Daanavas and the Daityas
न-अविन्दत्-अमृतम् नृप
did not get the nectar, O King!
युक्ता: कर्माणि यत्ता:-च
engaged in the action, with unity and
वासुदेव-पराङ्मुखा:
Vasudeva towards indifferent

O King! This is how the Daityas and the Daanavas, who were united engaged in the action of churning the ocean, did not get the nectar, as they were indifferent towards Lord Vaasudeva.


साधयित्वामृतं राजन्पाययित्वा स्वकान्सुरान् ।

पश्यतां सर्वभूतानां ययौ गरुडवाहन: ॥२॥


साधयित्वा-अमृतम् राजन्-
getting procured the nectar, O King!
पाययित्वा स्वकान्-सुरान्
made it to be drunk to His own (people) the gods
पश्यताम् सर्व-भूतानाम्
while looked on all the living beings
ययौ गरुड-वाहन:
went away on Gaduda mounted

The Lord, after getting the nectar procured and having His own people, the gods, to drink it, O King! He mounted Gaduda and went away, as all the living beings looked on.


सपत्नानां परमृद्धिं दृष्ट्वा ते दितिनन्दन: ।

अमृष्यमाणा उत्पेतुर्देवान्प्रत्युद्यतायुधा: ॥३॥


सपत्नानाम् परम्-ऋद्धिम्
of the enemies, the utmost good fortune
दृष्ट्वा ते दिति-नन्दन:
observing, they, Diti's sons
अमृष्यमाणा: उत्पेतु:-देवान्-
being jealous, attacked the gods
प्रत्युद्यत-आयुधा:
upholding weapons

They, Diti's sons, seeing the utmost good fortune of the enemies, were jealous and attacked the gods with uplifted weapons.


तत: सुरगणा: सर्वे सुधया पीतयैधिता: ।

प्रति संयुयुधु: शस्त्रैर्नारायणपदाश्रया: ॥४॥


तत: सुर-गणा: सर्वे
after that, the gods' hosts all
सुधया पीतया-ऐधिता:
by the nectar drinking rejuvenated
प्रति संयुयुधु: शस्त्रै:-
answered in combat with weapons
नारायण-पद-आश्रया:
in Naaraayana's feet resorting to

After that, all the hosts of the gods, rejuvenated by having drunk the nectar, and having taken resort at the feet of Naaraayana, answered them in an equal combat with weapons.


तत्र दैवासुरो नाम रण: परमदारुण: ।

रोधस्युदन्वतो राजंस्तुमुलो रोमहर्षण: ॥५॥


तत्र दैव-असुर: नाम
there, Deva-Asura, named
रण: परम-दारुण:
battle very fierce
रोधसि-उदन्वत: राजन्-
on shore of the sea, O King!
तुमुल: रोम-हर्षण:
Dreadful, thrilling (ensued)

O King! There, on the seashore, ensued a very fierce battled named Deva-Asura, which was dreadful and thrilling.


तत्रान्योन्यं सपत्नास्ते संरब्धमनसो रणे ।

समासाद्यासिभिर्बाणैर्निजघ्नुर्विविधायुधै: ॥६॥


तत्र-अन्य:-अन्यम् सपत्ना:-
there, each other, enemies
ते संरब्ध-मनस: रणे
they, anger in minds, in the battle,
समासाद्य-असिभि:-बाणै:-
face to face, with swords, arrows,
जघ्नु:-विविध-आयुधै:
attacked with various weapons

There in the battle, they, the enemies, with anger in there minds, attacked each other face to face with swords arrows and various other weapons.


शङ्खतूर्यमृदङ्गानां भेरीडमरिणां महान् ।

हस्त्यश्वरथपत्तीनां नदतां निस्वनोऽभवत् ॥७॥


शङ्ख-तूर्य-मृदङ्गानाम्
of conchs, trumpets, drums
भेरी-डमरिणाम् महान्
clarinets, Dammars, great
हस्ति-अश्व-रथ-पत्तीनाम्
of the elephants, horses, chariots, foot soldiers
नदताम् निस्वन:-अभवत्
shootings', roaring's became

The sounds of conchs, trumpets, drums, clarinets, Dammars and the sounds of the elephants, horses, chariots and shouting foot soldiers, became very great.


रथिनो रथिभिस्तत्र पत्तिभि: सह पत्तय: ।

हया हयैरिभाश्चेभै: समसज्जन्त संयुगे ॥८॥


रथिन: रथिभि:-तत्र
the charioteers with the chariots, there
पत्तिभि: सह पत्तय:
with the foot soldiers the foot soldiers
हया: हयै:-इभा:-च-इभै:
horses with the horses, elephants with the elephants
समसज्जन्त संयुगे
got engaged in the battle

There, in that battle, the charioteers with the chariots, with the foot soldiers the foot soldiers, horses with the horses, the elephants with the elephants, got engaged.


उष्ट्रै: केचिदिभै: केचिदपरे युयुधु: खरै: ।

केचिद् गौरमृगै: ऋक्षैर्द्वीपिभिर्हरिभिर्भटा: ॥९॥


उष्ट्रै: केचित्-इभै: केचित्-
on camels some, on elephants some
अपरे युयुधु: खरै:
others fought from donkeys
केचिद् गौर-मृगै:-ऋक्षै:-
some on Gauramrigas, bears,
द्वीपिभि:-हरिभि:-भटा:
tigers, lions, the warriors

Some warriors fought mounted on the camels, some on elephants, others on donkeys, Gauramrigas, bears, tigers and lions.


गृध्रै: कङ्कैर्बकैरन्ये श्येनभासैस्तिमिङ्गिलै: ।

शरभैर्महिषै: खड्गैर्गोवृषै: गवयारुणै: ॥१०॥


गृध्रै: कङ्कै:-बकै:-अन्ये
on vultures, buzzards, herons, others
श्येन-भासै:-तिमिङ्गिलै:
hawks, Bhaasa, whales,
शरभै:-महिषै: खड्गै:-
Sharabhas, bison, rhinoceroses,
गोवृषै: गवय-अरुणै:
bulls, Gayals and Arunas

Others fought mounted on vultures, buzzards, herons, hawks, Bhaasa, whales, Sharabhas, bison, rhinoceroses, bulls, Gayals and Arunas.


शिवाभिराखुभि: केचिद्कृकलासै: शशैर्नरै: ।

बस्तैरेके कृष्णसारैर्हंसैरन्ये च सूकरै: ॥११॥


शिवाभि:-आखुभि: केचिद्-
on jackals, rats, some
कृकलासै: शशै:-नरै:
on chameleons, hares, men,
बस्तै:-एके कृष्ण-सारै:-
on goats, some on black antelopes,
हंसै:-अन्ये च सूकरै:
on swans, others and on boars

Some rode on jackals, rats, chameleons, hares, men, some on goats, on black antelopes, swans and others on boars.


अन्ये जलस्थलखगै: सत्त्वैर्विकृतविग्रहै: ।

सेनयोरुभयो राजन्विविशुस्तेऽग्रतोऽग्रत: ॥१२॥


अन्ये जल-स्थल-खगै:
others, on water and land birds
सत्त्वै:-विकृत-विग्रहै:
on animals with deformed bodies
सेनयो:-उभयो: राजन्-
the armies both, O King!
विविशु:-ते-अग्रत:-अग्रत:
penetrated they, further and further

O King! Some rode on the birds of water and land, some on animals with deformed bodies. The armies of both penetrated farther and farther into each other.


चित्रध्वजपटै राजन्नातपत्रै: सितामलै:।

महाधनैर्वज्रदण्डैर्व्यजनैर्बार्हचामरै: ॥१३॥


चित्र-ध्वज-पटै:-राजन्-
multi coloured flags, O King!
आत-पत्रै: सित-अमलै:
Umbrellas white and clean
महा-धनै:-वज्र-दण्डै:-
embedded with gems, strong staffs
व्यजनै:-बार्ह-चामरै:
fans of peacock feathers

O King! They had multi coloured flags, umbrellas, white and clean, their strong staffs embedded with gems, and fans of peacock feathers.


वातोद्धूतोत्तरोष्णीषैरर्चिभिर्वर्मभूषणै: ।

स्फुरद्भिर्विशदै: शस्त्रै: सुतरां सूर्यरश्मिभि: ॥१४॥


वात-उद्धूत-उत्तर-उष्णीषै:-
in the winds waving upper cloths, turbans
अर्चिभि:-वर्म-भूषणै:
the jewels, armours, ornaments
स्फुरद्भि:-विशदै: शस्त्रै:
shining various weapons
सुतराम् सूर्य-रश्मिभि:
very much like Sun's rays

They had upper cloths waving in the wind, turbans with jewels, armours and ornaments, various weapons shining like the rays of the Sun.


देवदानववीराणां ध्वजिन्यौ पाण्डुनन्दन ।

रेजतुर्वीरमालाभिर्यादसामिव सागरौ ॥१५॥


देव-दानव-वीराणाम्
the Devas and Daanava's warrior
ध्वजिन्यौ पाण्डुनन्दन
armies, O Son of Paandu!
रेजतु:-वीर-मालाभि:-
shone with warriors' rows
यादसाम्-इव सागरौ
sea monsters like in the oceans

O Son of Paandu! The two armies of the Devas and the Daanavas, with the rows of their warriors, shone like two rows of monsters in the ocean.


वैरोचनो बलि: संख्ये सोऽसुराणां चमूपति: ।

यानं वैहायसं नाम कामगं मयनिर्मितं ॥१६॥


वैरोचन: बलि: संख्ये स:-
Virochana's son Bali, in the battle, he (was seated)
असुराणाम् चमू-पति:
of the Asura force, the commander-in-chief
यानम् वैहायसम् नाम
the vehicle, Vaihaasa named
कामगम् मय-निर्मितम्
flying at will, by Maya built

In the battle, commander-in-chief of the Asura army, Virochana's son Bali, was seated in his vehicle named Vaihaasa, which could fly at will and was built by the demon Maya.


सर्वसाङ्ग्रामिकोपेतं सर्वाश्चर्यमयं प्रभो ।

अप्रतर्क्यमनिर्देश्यं दृश्यमानमदर्शनम् ॥१७॥


सर्व-साङ्ग्रामिक्-उपेतम्
with all battle implements equipped with
सर्व-आश्चर्यमयम् प्रभो
(full of) all wonders, O lord!
अप्रतर्क्यम्-अनिर्देश्यम्
indisputable, not locatable
दृश्यमानम्-अदर्शनम्
visible, invisible

O lord! That vehicle was equipped with all implements of warfare. It was full of all wonders, indisputable in perfection, and unlocatable because it was now visible and now invisible.


आस्थितस्तद् विमानाग्र्यं सर्वानीकाधिपैर्वृत: ।

बालव्यजनछत्राग्र्यै: रेजे चन्द्र इवोदये ॥१८॥


आस्थित:-तत् विमान-अग्र्यम्
seated in that Ariel car high class
सर्व-अनीक-अधिपै:-वृत:
all the armies commanders surrounded with
बाल-व्यजन-छत्र-अग्र्यै:
young fan, umbrella exquisite,
रेजे चन्द्र इव-उदये
shone, moon like rising

Seated in that high class Ariel car, he was surrounded by the commanders of all the armies. Fanned by the fans and with the exquisite umbrella, he shone like the rising young moon.


तस्यासन्सर्वतो यानैर्यूथानां पतयोऽसुरा: ।

नमुचि: शम्बरो बाणो विप्रचित्तिरयोमुख: ॥१९॥


तस्य-आसन्-सर्वतो: यानै:-
his were, all around in Ariel cars
यूथानाम् पतय:-असुरा:
of the squadrons leaders the Asuras
नमुचि: शम्बर: बाण:
Namuchi, Shambara, Baana,
विप्रचित्ति:-अयोमुख:
Viprachitti, Ayomukha

All around him were the Asuras, leaders of the squadrons, in their respective Ariel cars, namely, Namuchi, Shambara, Vaana, Viprachitti, Ayomukha.


द्विमूर्धा कालनाभोऽथ प्रहेतिर्हेतिरिल्वल: ।

शकुनिर्भूतसंतापो वज्रदंष्ट्रो विरोचन: ॥२०॥


द्विमूर्धा कालनाभ:-अथ
Dvimoordhaa, Kaalanaabha, then
प्रहेति:-हेति:-इल्वल:
Praheti, Heti, Ilvala,
शकुनि:-भूतसंताप:
Shakuni, Bhootasantaapa,

Dvimoordhaa, Kaalanaabha, then Praheti, Heti, Ilvala, Shakuni, Bhootasantaapa, Vajradanshtra, Virochana,….


हयग्रीव: शङ्कुशिरा: कपिलो मेघदुन्दुभि: ।

तारकश्चक्रदृक् शुम्भो निशुम्भो जम्भ उत्कल: ॥२१॥

अरिष्टोऽरिष्टनेमिश्च मयश्च त्रिपुराधिप: ।

अन्ये पौलोमकालेया निवातकवचादय: ॥२२॥

Maya, and the three cities lord,
अन्ये पौलोम-कालेया:
others, Pauloma, the Kaaleyas,
निवातकवच-आदय:
the Nivaatacavachas, and others

Arishta, Arishtanemee, Maya, the lord of the three cities, and the others, Pauloma, the Kaaleyas, the Nivaatacavachas, and others.


अलब्धभागा: सोमस्य केवलं क्लेशभागिन: ।

सर्व: एते रणमुखे बहुशो निर्जितामरा: ॥२३॥


अलब्ध-भागा: सोमस्य
not received share of the nectar
केवलम् क्लेश-भागिन:
only, in toil participated
सर्व: एते रण-मुखे
all of them in the battles' beginning
बहुश: निर्जित-अमरा:
many times had defeated the immortals

All of them had not received a share of the nectar, they had only participated in the toil. In the beginning of the combat, they had many a times defeated the immortals.


सिंहनादान्विमुञ्चन्त: शङ्खान्दध्मुर्महारवान् ।

दृष्ट्वा सपत्नानुत्सिक्तान्बलभित् कुपितो भृशम् ॥२४॥


सिंहनादान्-विमुञ्चन्त:
lions' roars letting out
शङ्खान्-दध्मु:-महा-रवान्
conch blowing of intense sound
दृष्ट्वा सपत्नान्-उत्सिक्तान्-
seeing, the enemies bloated
बलभित् कुपित: भृशम्
Indra became angry very much

They sent forth roars like that of the lions, and blew the loud sounding conchs. Seeing the enemies bloated with pride, Indra became very angry.


ऐरावतं दिक्करिणमारूढ: शुशुभे स्वराट् ।

यथा स्रवत्प्रस्रवणमुदयाद्रिमहर्पति: ॥२५॥


ऐरावतम् दिक्करिणम्-
Airaawata, the quarter's guardian elephant
आरूढ: शुशुभे स्वराट्
mounted, shone Indra
यथा स्रवत्-प्रस्रवणम्-
like streaming cascades
उदय-अद्रिम्-अहर्पति:
on the eastern mountain, the Sun

Indra, mounted on Airaawata, the elephant guardian of the quarters, shone like the Sun rising on the eastern mountains, with its rays streaming in cascades.


तस्यासन्सर्वतो देवा नानावाहध्वजायुधा: ।

लोकपाला: सह गणैर्वाय्वग्निवरुणादय: ॥२६॥


तस्य-आसन्-सर्वत: देवा
of his were, all around gods,
नाना-वाह-ध्वजा-आयुधा:
various vehicles, flags, weapons,
लोक-पाला: सह गणै:-
the directions' guardians, along with the Ganas,
वायु-अग्नि-वरुण-आदय:
Vaayu, Agni, Varuna, and others

All around him were gods, various vehicles, flags, weapons, the directions' guardians, along with the Ganas, Vaayu, Agni, Varuna, and others.


तेऽन्योन्यमभिसंसृत्य क्षिपन्तो मर्मभिर्मिथ: ।

आह्वयन्तो विशन्तोऽग्रे युयुधुर्द्वन्द्वयोधिन: ॥२७॥


ते-अन्य:-अन्यम्-अभिसंसृत्य
they, one another facing
क्षिपन्त: मर्मभि:-मिथ:
reproaching, with cutting words mutually
आह्वयन्त: विशन्त:-अग्रे
calling, rushing forwards
युयुधु:-द्वन्द्व-योधिन:
fought in pairs the warriors

They, the warriors facing one another, reproaching mutually calling with cutting words, rushed forwards and fought in pairs.


युयोध बलिरिन्द्रेण तारकेण गुहोऽस्यत ।

वरुणो हेतिनायुध्यन्मित्रो राजन्प्रहेतिना ॥२८॥


युयोध बलि:-इन्द्रेण

with Taaraka, Guha fought
वरुण: हेतिना-अयुध्यत्-
Varuna with Heti fought

Mitra, O King! with Praheti

O King! Bali fought with Indra, Guha fought with Taaraka, Varuna fought with Heti, and Mitra with Praheti.


यमस्तु कालनाभेन विश्वकर्मा मयेन वै ।

शम्बरो युयुधे त्वष्ट्रा सवित्रा तु विरोचन: ॥२९॥


यम:-तु कालनाभेन
Yama indeed with Kaalanaabha
विश्वकर्मा मयेन वै
Vishvakarmaa with Maya certainly,
शम्बर: युयुधे त्वष्ट्रा
Shambara fought with Tvashtra,
सवित्रा तु विरोचन:
with Savitaa indeed Virochana

Yama, indeed, fought with Kaalanaabha, Vishvakarmaa with Maya certainly, Shambara fought with Tvashtra, and Savitaa indeed with Virochana.


अपराजितेन नमुचिरश्विनौ वृषपर्वणा ।

सूर्यो बलिसुतैर्देवो बाणज्येष्ठै: शतेन च ॥३०॥


अपराजितेन नमुचि:-
with Aparaajita Namuchi,
अश्विनौ वृषपर्वणा
the Ashwinis with Vrishaparvana,
सूर्य: बलिसुतै:-देव:
Soorya with Bali's sons, god
बाणज्येष्ठै: शतेन च
with Baana the eldest, hundreds and

Namuchi fought with Aparaajita, the Ashwinis with Vrishaparvana, god Soorya with the hundred sons of Bali, the eldest being Baana.


राहुणा च तथा सोम: पुलोम्ना युयुधेऽनिल: ।

निशुम्भशुम्भयोर्देवी भद्रकाली तरस्विनी ॥३१॥


राहुणा च तथा सोम:
with Raahu and also Moon,
पुलोम्ना युयुधे-अनिल:
with Pulomaa fought Anila (wind)
निशुम्भ-शुम्भयो:-
with Nishumbha and Shumbha both
देवी भद्रकाली तरस्विनी
The Goddess Bhadrakaali, the powerful

And also, Moon fought with Raahu, Anila, with Pulomaa and the powerful Goddess Bhadrakaali fought with Nishumbha and Shumbha both.


वृषाकपिस्तु जम्भेन महिषेण विभावसु: ।

इल्वलै: सह वातापिर्ब्रह्मपुत्रैररिन्दम ॥३२॥


वृषाकपि:-तु जम्भेन
Vrishaakapi indeed with Jambha,
महिषेण विभावसु:
with Mahisha Vibhaavasu
इल्वलै: सह वातापि:-
Ilvala with Vaataapee
ब्रह्मपुत्रै: अरिन्दम
with Brahma's sons, O Oppressor of the foes!

O Oppressor of the foes! Vrishaakapi, Lord Shiva, indeed fought with Jambha, and Vibhaavasu, Sun, with Mahisha, and Vaataapee and Ilvala fought with Brahmaa's sons, Marichi and others.


कामदेवेन दुर्मर्ष उत्कलो मातृभि: सह ।

बृहस्पतिश्चोशनसा नरकेण शनिश्चर: ॥३३॥


कामदेवेन दुर्मर्ष
Kaama deva with Durmarsha
उत्कल: मातृभि: सह
Utkala, the Maatrees with
बृहस्पति:-च-उशनसा
Brihaspati with Shukraachaaryaa
नरकेण शनिश्चर:
with Naraka Shanishchara

Kaama deva fought with Durmarsha, Utkala with the Maatrees, Brihaspati with Shukraachaaryaa, and Shanishchara with Naraka.


मरुतो निवातकवचै: कालेयैर्वसवोऽमरा: ।

विश्वेदेवास्तु पौलोमै रुद्रा: क्रोधवशै: सह ॥३४॥


मरुत: निवातकवचै:
Maruta with the Nivaatakavachas,
कालेयै:-वसव:-अमरा:
with the Kaaleyas the Vasava gods
विश्वेदेवा:-तु पौलोमै:
Vishvedevas indeed with Poulomas
रुद्रा: क्रोधवशै: सह
and the Rudras Krodhavasas with

Maruta fought with the Nivaatakavachas, the Vasava gods with the Kaaleyas, indeed, the Vishvedevas with the Poulomas, and the Rudras with the Krodhavasas.


त एवमाजावसुरा: सुरेन्द्रा द्वन्द्वेन संहत्य च युध्यमाना: ।

अन्योन्यमासाद्य निजघ्नुरोजसा जिगीषवस्तीक्ष्णशरासितोमरै: ॥३५॥


ते एवम्-अजौ-असुरा:
they, like this, in the battle, the Asuras,
सुरेन्द्रा: द्वन्द्वेन संहत्य
the leaders of gods, in pairs assailing
च युध्यमाना:
and fighting
अन्योन्यम्-आसाद्य
one another approaching
निजघ्नु:-ओजसा जिगीषव:-
struck violently, in eagerness to win,
तीक्ष्ण शर-असि-तोमरै:
with sharp arrows, swords and spears

Like this, in the battle, they, the Asuras and the leaders of the gods, approached one another and fought and assailed and struck violently with sharp arrows, swords, and spears, in an eagerness to win.


भुशुण्डिभिश्चक्रगदर्ष्टिपट्टिशै: शक्त्युल्मुकै: प्रासपरवधैरपि ।

निस्त्रिंशभल्लै: परिधै: समुद्गरै: सभिन्दिपालैश्च शिरांसि चिच्छिदु: ॥३६॥


भुशुण्डिभि:-चक्र-गद-अर्ष्टि-
with Bhushundis, discuses, maces, lances,
पट्टिशै: शक्ति-उल्मुकै:
spears, darts and firebrands,
प्रास-परवधै:-अपि
Praasas, axes, also
निस्त्रिंश-भल्लै: परिधै:
scimitra, Bhallas, bludgeons and
समुद्गरै: सभिन्दिपालै:-च
also with Mudgaras, also with Bhindipaalas, and
शिरांसि चिच्छिदु:
the heads chopped off

They chopped off the heads with Bhushundis, discuses, maces, lances, spears, darts and firebrands, Praasas, axes, also scimitra, Bhallas, bludgeons and also with Mudgaras, and with Bhindipaalas.


गजास्तुरङ्गा: सरथा: पदातय: सारोहवाहा विविधा विखण्डिता: ।

निकृत्तबाहूरुशिरोधराङ्घ्र्यश्छिन्नध्वजेष्वासतनुत्रभूषणा: ॥३७॥

elephants, horses, with chariots,
पदातय: सारोहवाहा:
on foot, along with their mounts
विविधा: विखण्डिता:
various were cut to pieces
निकृत्त-बाहु-उरु-शिरोधर-
with severed arms, thighs, necks,
अङ्घ्रय:-छिन्न-ध्वज-
feet, shattered flags,
इष्वास-तनुत्र-भूषणा:
bows, armour, ornaments

The elephants, horses, with their mounts, soldiers on chariots and on foot, were cut into pieces, with their arms thighs, necks, feet severed, and their flags, bows armours, ornaments were shattered.


तेषां पदाघातरथाङ्गचूर्णितादायोधनादुल्बण उत्थितस्तदा ।

रेणुर्दिश: खं द्युमणिं च छादयन् न्यवर्ततासृक्स्रुतिभि: परिप्लुतात् ॥३८॥


तेषाम् पद-आघात-
their feet's treading
रथ-अङ्ग-चूर्णितात्-
chariot's wheels' crushed
आयोधनात्-उल्बण उत्थित:-तदा
from battle field, intense arose then,
रेणु:-दिश: खम् द्युमणिम्
dust, the quarters, sky, Sun
च छादयन् न्यवर्तत-
and enveloping, settled
असृक्-स्रुतिभि: परिप्लुतात्
blood flow drenched (earth)

From the battle field which was trampled by their feet and crushed by the wheels of the chariots, intense dust arose enveloping the quarters, the sky and the Sun, and settled on the blood flow drenched earth.


शिरोभिरुद्भूतकिरीटकुण्डलै: संरम्भदृग्भि: परिदष्टदच्छदै: ।

महाभुजै: साभरणै: सहायुधै: सा प्रास्तृता भू: करभोरुभिर्बभौ ॥३९॥


शिरोभि:-उद्भूत-किरीट-कुण्डलै:
from heads severed, by diadems, ear-rings,
संरम्भ-दृग्भि:
with wrathful eyes,
परिदष्ट-दच्छदै:
clasped teeth
महा-भुजै: स-आभरणै:
big arms, with ornaments
सह-आयुधै: सा प्रास्तृता भू:
along with weapons, she, scattered the earth
करभ-उरुभि:-बभौ
elephant (trunks) thighs became

The earth became beautiful, spread with the diadems and ear-rings strewn from the severed heads, with big arms wearing ornaments, and having weapons, thighs like elephants' trunks, with wrathful eyes, and clasped teeth in anger.


कबन्धास्तत्र चोत्पेतु: पतितस्वशिरोऽक्षिभि: ।

उद्यतायुधदोर्दण्डैराधावन्तो भटान् मृधे ॥४०॥


कबन्धा:-तत्र च-उत्पेतु:
the bodies, there and sprang up
पतित: स्व-शिर:-अक्षिभि:
fallen, by own head and eyes
उद्यत-आयुध-दोर्दण्डै:-
holding weapons, by two arms
आधावन्त: भटान् मृधे
running after warriors in the battle

In that battle, there, the fallen bodies sprang up, holding weapons in their two arms, with own head and eyes recognizing the warriors and running after them.


बलिर्महेन्द्रंदशभिस्त्रिभिरैरावतं शरै: ।

चतुर्भिश्चतुरो वाहानेकेनारोहमार्च्छयत् ॥४१॥


बलि:-महेन्द्रम् दशभि:-
Bali, at Indra with ten,
त्रिभि:-ऐरावतम् शरै:
three at Airaawata, arrows,
चतुर्भि:-चतुर: वाहान्-
by four the four guards,
एकेन-आरोहम्-आर्च्छयत्
by one, the driver assailed

Bali assailed Indra with ten arrows, Airaawata with three, the four guards with four and with one the driver of Airaawata.


स तानापतत: शक्रस्तावद्भि: शीघ्रविक्रम: ।

चिच्छेद निशितैर्भल्लैरसम्प्राप्तान्हसन्निव ॥४२॥


स: तान्-आपतत: शक्र:-
he, them, coming, Indra,
तावद्भि: शीघ्र-विक्रम:
with as many, swiftly and with valour
चिच्छेद निशितै:-भल्लै:-
cut short by sharp spears,
असम्प्राप्तान्-हसन्-इव
before their reaching, laughing as though

He, Indra, seeing them coming, as though laughingly, swiftly and with valour cut them short with as many sharp spears, before they reached him.


तस्य कर्मोत्तमं वीक्ष्य दुर्मर्ष: शक्तिमाददे ।

तां ज्वलन्तीं महोल्काभां हस्तस्थामच्छिनद् हरि: ॥४३॥


तस्य कर्म-उत्तमम् वीक्ष्य
his action, superb seeing
दुर्मर्ष: शक्तिम्-आददे
unflinchable dart took
ताम् ज्वलन्तीम् महा-उल्काभाम्
that burning, great meteor like glowing
हस्त-स्थाम्-अच्छिनत् हरि:
in hand placed, cut off Indra

Bali saw his superb action and took up an unflinchable dart, that great meteor like glowing dart, while still in the hand of Bali, Indra cut off.


तत: शूलं तत: प्रासं ततस्तोमरमृष्टय: ।

यद् यच्छस्त्रं समादद्यात्सर्वं तदच्छिनद् विभु: ॥४४॥


तत: शूलम् तत: प्रासम्
then, spear, then Praasa,
तत:-तोमर-मृष्टय:
then Tomar, double-edged sword,
यत् यत्-शस्त्रम् समादद्यात्-
what ever weapon took up
सर्वम् तत्-अच्छिनद् विभु:
all that cut off Indra

Bali then took up a spear, then a Praasa, then a Tomara and a double edged sword. All those weapons that he took up, Indra cut them off there and then.


ससर्जाथासुरीं मायामन्तर्धानगतोऽसुर: ।

तत: प्रादुरभूच्छैल: सुरानीकोपरि प्रभो ॥४५॥


ससर्ज-अथ-आसुरीम् मायाम्-
created then demonic illusion,
अन्तर्धान-गत:-असुर:
out of sight went, the Asura
तत: प्रादु:-अभूत्-शैल:
then there appeared a mountain
सुर-अनीक-उपरि प्रभो
on the gods' armies above, O King!

O King! Then the Asura Bali created a demonic illusion, and himself went out of sight. Then, there appeared, above the gods' armies, a mountain.


ततो निपेतुस्तरवो दह्यमाना दवाग्निना।

शिला: सटङ्कशिखराश्चूर्णयन्त्यो द्विषद्बलम् ॥४६॥


तत: निपेतु:-तरव:
from that fell trees
दह्यमाना दवाग्निना
burning with forest fire
शिला: सटङ्क-शिखरा:-
rocks chisel (sharp) peaks
चूर्णयन्त्य: द्विषद्-बलम्
crushing the gods' forces

From that mountain, trees burning in forest fire fell, and fell chisel sharp peaks of rocks, crushing the gods' forces.


महोरगा: समुत्पेतुर्दन्दशूका: सवृश्चिका: ।

सिंहव्याघ्रवराहाश्च मर्दयन्तो महागजान् ॥४७॥


महा-उरगा: समुत्पेतु:-
huge serpants emerged
दन्दशूका: सवृश्चिका:
snakes with scorpions
सिंह-व्याघ्र-वराहा:-च
tigers lions boars and
मर्दयन्त:-महा-गजान्
trampling the great elephants

There emerged from the mountain, huge serpants, snakes with scorpions, tigers, lions and boars, trampling the great elephants.


यातुधान्यश्च शतश: शूलहस्ता विवासस: ।

छिन्धि भिन्धीति वादिन्यस्तथा रक्षोगणा: प्रभो ॥४८॥


यातुधान्य:-च शतश:
ogresses and in hundreds
शूल-हस्ता: विवासस:
pikes in hand, cloth-less
छिन्धि भिन्धि-इति वादिन्य:-
'cut! Break' this, shouting,
तथा रक्षोगणा: प्रभो
and ogres hoards, O lord!

And, O lord! There appeared hundreds of clothe-less ogresses, pikes in hand, shouting, 'cut, break!' and hoards of ogres too.


ततो महाघना व्योम्नि गम्भीरपरुषस्वना: ।

अङ्गारान्मुमुचुर्वातैराहता: स्तनयित्नव: ॥४९॥


तत: महा-घना: व्योम्नि
then, large clouds in the sky
गम्भीर-परुष-स्वना:
deep, terrific sounding
अङ्गारान्-मुमुचु:-वातै:-
live coals rained, by wind
आहता: स्तनयित्नव:
thrown, thundering roars

Then, large thundering clouds with deep terrific sounding roars rained live coals thrown about by the wind.


सृष्टो दैत्येन सुमहान्वह्नि: श्वसनसारथि: ।

सांवर्तक इवात्युग्रो विबुधध्वजिनीमधाक् ॥५०॥


सृष्ट: दैत्येन सुमहान्-वह्नि:
created by the Daitya (Bali), great fire
श्वशन-सारथि:
by wind enhanced
सांवर्तक इव-अति-उग्र:
of dissolution like very fierce,
विबुध-ध्वजिनीम्-अधाक्
the celestial armies began to burn

Created by the Daitya, Bali, a great fire, very fierce, enhanced by the wind, like the fire of dissolution, and started burning the celestial armies.


तत: समुद्र उद्वेल: सर्वत: प्रत्यदृश्यत ।

प्रचण्डवातैरुद्धूततरङ्गावर्तभीषण: ॥५१॥


तत: समुद्र उद्वेल:
then, an ocean surrounding
सर्वत: प्रत्यदृश्यत
all around was seen
प्रचण्ड-वातै:-उद्धूत-
by fierce winds high
तरङ्ग-आवर्त-भीषण:
waves, whirlpools terrible

Then, there was seen an ocean surrounding from all sides, with high waves and terrible whirlpools instigated by fierce winds.


एवं दैत्यैर्महामायैरलक्ष्यगतिभीषणै:।

सृज्यमानासु मायासु विषेदु: सुरसैनिका: ॥५२॥


एवम् दैत्यै:-महा-मायै:-
like this, by the Daityas, the great conjurers
अलक्ष्य-गति-भीषणै:
of imperceptible movements, fierce
सृज्यमानासु मायासु
creating illusions,
विषेदु: सुर-सैनिका:
were depressed the gods' soldiers

Like this, by the great conjurers, the Daityas, of imperceptible movements, when fierce illusions were created, the soldiers of the gods were very depressed.


न तत्प्रतिविधिं यत्र विदुरिन्द्रादयो नृप ।

ध्यात: प्रादुरभूत् तत्र भगवान्विश्व भावन: ॥५३॥


न तत्-प्रति-विधिम् यत्र
not that to counter system, when
विदु:-इन्द्र-आदय: नृप
knowing, Indra and others, O King!
ध्यात: प्रादु:-अभूत्
on concentrating, manifested
तत्र भगवान्-विश्व भावन:
there The Lord, The world's Protector

O King! When Indra and others did not know the system to counteract that, by their concentrating, The Lord manifested there, who is The Protector of the universe.


तत: सुपर्णांसकृताङ्घ्रिपल्लव: पिशङ्गवासा नवकञ्जलोचन: ।

अदृश्यताष्टायुधबाहुरुल्लसच्छ्रीकौस्तुभानर्घ्यकिरीटकुण्डल: ॥५४॥


तत: सुपर्ण-अंस-कृत-
then, on Gaduda's shoulder placing
अङ्घ्रि-पल्लव: पिशङ्ग-वासा
feet lotus, in yellow clothed
नव-कञ्ज-लोचन:
fresh lotus eyed
अदृश्यत-अष्ट-आयुध-बाहु:-
was seen with eight weapons in arms
उल्लसत्-श्री-कौस्तुभ-
resplendent with beauty of the Kaustubha,
अनर्घ्य-किरीट-कुण्डल:
on the crown, diadem and earrings

Then, with His lotus feet resting on the shoulders of Gaduda, robed in yellow, fresh lotus like eyes, resplendent with the beauty of the Kaustubha, wielding various weapons in the eight arms, The Lord was seen with diadem on His crown and ear-rings in His ears.


तस्मिन्प्रविषटेऽसुरकूटकर्मजा माया विनेशुर्महिना महीयस: ।

स्वप्नो यथा हि प्रतिबोध आगते हरिस्मृति: सर्वविपद्विमोक्षणम् ॥५५॥


तस्मिन्-प्रविष्टे-असुर-कूट-
on His entering, the Asuras' deceitful
कर्मजा माया विनेशु:-
illusory Maayaa was destroyed
महिना महीयस:
by the glory of the Mighty
स्वप्न: यथा हि प्रतिबोध
dream just as indeed wakefulness
आगते हरि-स्मृति:
having come Shree Hari's thought
सर्व-विपत्-विमोक्षणम्
all evils is dispelling

As He entered, the deceitful conjuring illusory Maayaa of the Asuras was destroyed, by the glory of The Mighty. The thought of Shree Hari dispels all evils, just as dreams are destroyed as wakefulness returns.


दृष्ट्वा मृधे गरुडवाहमिभारिवाह आविध्य शूलमहिनोदथ कालनेमि: ।

तल्लीलया गरुडमूर्ध्नि पतद् गृहीत्वा तेनाहनन्नृप सवाहमरिं त्र्यधीश: ॥५6॥


दृष्ट्वा मृधे गरुड-वाहम्-
perceiving in the battle, on Gaduda mounted
इभ-अरि-वाह आविश्य
on lion the enemy mounted, seated
शूलम्-अहिनोत्-अथ कालनेमि:
spear charged then, Kaalanemi
तत्-लीलया गरुडमूर्ध्नि
that, sportingly, on the Gaduda's head
पतद् गृहीत्वा तेन-अहनत्-
falling, getting hold of, by that killed,
नृप सवाहम्-अरिम्-त्र्यधीश:
O King! with mount, the enemy, The Lord of three worlds

O King! In the battle, perceiving The Lord mounted on Gaduda, the enemy Kaalanemi, mounted on the lion, charged a spear, even as he was seated . As it was falling on Gaduda's head, The Lord of the three worlds, sportingly caught hold of it and flung it on the enemy, killing him along with the mount, with it.


माली सुमाल्यतिबलौ युधि पेततुर्यच्चक्रेण कृत्तशिरसावथ माल्यवांस्तम् ।

आहत्य तिग्मगदयाहनदण्डजेन्द्रं तावच्छिरोऽच्छिनदरेर्नदतोऽरिणाऽऽद्य: ॥५७॥


माली सुमाली-अति-बलौ युधि
Maali and Sumaali, very powerful both, in the battle
पेततु: यत्-चक्रेण कृत्त-शिरसौ-
felled, by which discus, cut off heads
अथ माल्यवान्-तम्
then, Maalyavaan, Him
आहत्य तिग्म-गदया-
striking, by a forceful mace
अहनत्-अण्डजेन्द्रम्
killed Gaduda
तावत्-शिर:-अच्छिनत्-
just then head severed
अरे:-नदत:-अरिणा आद्य:
of enemy roaring, by the discus, The Primary (Person)

By Whose discus, The very powerful Maali and Sumaali's heads were cut off, fell on the battle field. Then, Maalyavaan struck Gaduda with a forceful mace and almost killed him, when That Primary Person severed the roaring enemy's head with a discus.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां अष्टमे स्कन्धे देवासुरसंग्रामे दशम: अध्याय: ॥१०॥


Thus ends the tenth discourse, forming part of the story of the war between the gods and the demons in Book Eight of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
