श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
तेऽन्योन्यतोऽसुरा: पात्रं हरन्तस्त्यक्तसौहृदा: ।
क्षिपन्तो दस्युधर्माण आयान्तीं ददृशु: स्त्रियम् ॥१॥
ते-अन्य:-अन्यत:-सुरा: पात्रम्
they, one from the other, the nectar pot
हरन्त:-त्यक्त-सौहृदा:
snatching, abandoning fellowship
क्षिपन्त: दस्यु-धर्माण:
extending plunderer' ways
आयान्तीम् ददृशु: स्त्रियम्
the approaching saw damsel
They, the Asuras abandoned all fellowship and snatched the pot of nectar from each other given to the ways of plunderers. As they did so, they saw the approaching damsel.
अहो रूपमहो धाम अहो अस्या नवं वय: ।
इति ते तामभिद्रुत्य पप्रच्छुर्जातहृच्छया: ॥२॥
अहो रूपम्-अहो धाम
wonderful beauty, amazing splendour
अहो अस्या: नवम् वय:
charming her budding youth
इति ते ताम्-अभिद्रुत्य
thus they her quickly going to
पप्रच्छु:-जात-हृच्छया:
asked with enkindled desire
Oh wonderful beauty, amazing splendour, her budding youth is charming. Thus, they quickly went up to her and asked her, with desire enkindled in their hearts.
का त्वं कञ्जपलाशाक्षि कुतो वा किं चिकीर्षसि ।
कस्यासि वद वामोरु मथ्नन्तीव मनांसि न: ॥३॥
का त्वम् कञ्जपलाश-अक्षि
who are you, O lotus petal eyed One!
कुत: वा किम् चिकीर्षसि
from where or, what do you want
कस्य-असि वद वामोरु
whose are you (the daughter) do say, O Beautiful one!
मथ्नन्ती-इव मनांसि न:
churning as if hearts ours
O lotus petal eyed one! Who are you? From where have you come? What do you want? Whose daughter are you? Do say. O beautiful one! You are churning our hearts.
न वयं त्वामरैर्दैत्यै: सिद्धगन्धर्वचारणै: ।
नास्पृष्टपूर्वां जानीमो लोकेशैश्च कुतो नृभि: ॥४॥
न वयम् त्वा-अमरै:-दैत्यै:
not we, you by the gods, Daityas
सिद्ध-गन्धर्व-चारणै:
Siddhas, Gandharvas and Chaaranaas,
न-अस्पृष्ट-पूर्वाम् जानीम:
not touched before, know
लोकेशै:-च-कुत: नृभि:
by the gods of the spheres and where then by mortals
It is not that we do not know that you have not been touched before by the gods, Daityas, Siddhas, Gandharvas and Chaaranaas, as well as by the gods of the spheres, where then by the mortals.
नूनं त्वं विधिना सुभ्रू: प्रेषितासि शरीरिणाम् ।
सर्वेन्द्रियमन: प्रीतिं विधातुं सघृणेन किम् ॥५॥
नूनम् त्वम् विधिना सुभ्रू:
definitely, you, by Creator, O with beautiful eyebrows
प्रेषिता-असि शरीरिणाम्
sent are, for the mortals
सर्व-इन्द्रिय-मन: प्रीतिम्
all senses and mind delight
विधातुम् सघृणेन किम्
to give, by The Merciful, is it
Is it that, certainly by The Merciful Creator you have been sent here to provide delight to all the senses and the mind of the mortals.
सा त्वं न: स्पर्धमानानामेकवस्तुनि मानिनि ।
ज्ञातीनां बद्धवैराणां शं विधत्स्व सुमध्यमे ॥६॥
सा त्वम् न: स्पर्धमानानाम्
that you, us contesting
एक-वस्तुनि मानिनि
for one object, O proud lady!
ज्ञातीनाम् बद्ध-वैराणाम्
(though) kins have become enemies
शम् विधत्स्व सुमध्यमे
peace bring about, O slender waisted one!
O proud lady! O slender waisted one! though we are kins, we have become enemies for the sake of one object, do bring about peace amongst us.
वयं कश्यपदायादा भ्रातर: कृतपौरुषा: ।
विभजस्व यथान्यायं नैव भेदो यथा भवेत् ॥७॥
वयम् कश्यप-दायादा:
we are Kashyapa's sons
भ्रातर: कृत-पौरुषा:
brothers, have put in effort
विभजस्व यथा-न्यायम्
divide according to equality
न-एव भेद: यथा भवेत्
not even difference, so that is there
We are the sons of Kashyapa and so are brothers. We have put in effort for this nectar. Please divide this equally amongst us so that there are no differences.
इत्युपामन्त्रितो दैत्यैर्मायायोषिद्वपुर्हरि: ।
प्रहस्य रुचिरापाङ्गैर्निरीक्षन्निदमब्रवीत् ॥८॥
इति-उपामन्त्रित: दैत्यै:-
thus sought for advice, by the Daityas
माया-योषित्-वपु:-हरि:
by Maayaa having a damsel's body, Shree Hari
प्रहस्य रुचिरा-आपाङ्गै:-
laughingly by beautiful side glances
निरीक्षन्-इदम्-अब्रवीत्
looking around this said
When Shree Hari, Who was having a damsel's body by His won Maayaa, His advice was thus sought by the Daityas, He laughingly looked around with beautiful side glances and said this,...
श्री भगवान उवाच -
The Lord said -
कथं कश्यपदायादा: पुंश्चल्यां मयि सङ्गता: ।
विश्वासं पण्डितो जातु कामिनीषु न याति हि ॥९॥
कथम् कश्यप-दायादा:
how Kashyapa's sons
पुंश्चल्याम् मयि सङ्गता:
on a wayward me, have trusted
विश्वासम् पण्डित: जातु
faith, the wise, never on
कामिनीषु न याति हि
lustful women do not put indeed
How have the sons of Kashyapa trusted me, a wayward woman? Indeed the wise do not ever place faith in lustful women.
सालावृकाणां स्त्रीणां च स्वैरिणीनां सुरद्विष: ।
सख्यान्याहुरनित्यानि नूत्नं नूत्नं विचिन्वताम् ॥१०॥
सालावृकाणाम् स्त्रीणाम् च
of wolves and women
स्वैरिणीनाम् सुरद्विष:
independent, O Daityas!
सख्यानि-आहु:-अनित्यानि
friendship is said to be inconstant
नूत्नम् नूत्नम् विचिन्वताम्
new, ever new, explore
O Daityas! The friendship of independent women and wolves is not said to be constant, as they keep looking for newer and newer avenues.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इति ते क्ष्वेलितैस्तस्या आश्वस्तमनसोऽसुरा: ।
जहसुर्भावगम्भीरं ददुश्चामृतभाजनम् ॥११॥
इति ते क्ष्वेलितै:-तस्या
thus they, mocked by her
आश्वस्त-मनस:-असुरा:
reassured in mind, the Asuras
जहसु:-भाव-गम्भीरम्
laughed meaningfully and deep
ददु:-च-अमृत-भाजनम्
gave and the nectar pot
Thus mocked by her, the Asuras were reassured in mind and they laughed deep and meaningfully, and gave the nectar pot to her.
ततो गृहीत्वामृतभाजनं हरिर्बभाष ईषत्स्मितशोभया गिरा ।
यद्यभ्युपेतं क्व च साध्वसाधु वा कृतं मया वो विभजे सुधामिमाम् ॥१२॥
तत: गृहीत्वा-अमृत-भाजनम्
then taking hold of the nectar pot
हरि:-बभाष ईषत्-स्मित-
Hari said, a little smilingly
शोभया गिरा
in a sweet voice
यदि-अभ्युपेतम् क्व च
if it is agreeable, whether
साधु-असाधु वा कृतम् मया
right wrong or done by me
व: विभजे सुधाम्-इमाम्
in you will divide nectar this
Then taking hold of the nectar pot, Shree Hari, a little smilingly said in a sweet voice, ' What I do, whether it is right or wrong, that, if it is agreeable, I will divide this nectar among you all.'
इत्यभिव्याहृतं तस्या आकर्ण्यासुरपुङ्गवा: ।
अप्रमाणविदस्तस्यास्तत् तथेत्यन्वमंसत ॥१३॥
इति-अभिव्याहृतम् तस्या:
this declaration of her's
आकर्ण्य-असुर-पुङ्गवा:
hearing, the Asura lords
अप्रमाणविद:-तस्या:-तत्
not knowing reality, her, that
तथा-इति-अन्वमंसत
'so be it' thus agreed.
Hearing that declaration of her's, the Asura leaders not knowing her reality agreed to her, saying 'so be it'.
अथोपोष्य कृतस्नाना हुत्वा च हविषानलम् ।
दत्त्वा गोविप्रभूतेभ्य: कृतस्वस्त्ययना द्विजै: ॥१४॥
अथ-उपोष्य कृत-स्नाना:
then having fasted, having bathed,
हुत्वा च हविषा-अनलम्
sacrificed and oblations in fire
दत्त्वा गो-विप्र-भूतेभ्य:
having given to cows, Braahmanas and living beings
कृत-स्वस्ति-अयना: द्विजै:
got the auspicious chants done by the Braahmanas
Then, having fasted for a day, having bathed, sacrifice was performed in the fire with oblations. The cows Braahmanas and other living beings were given proper gifts, and auspicious chants were chanted by the Braahmanas.
यथोपजोषं वासांसि परिधायाहतानि ते ।
कुशेषु प्राविशन्सर्वे प्रागग्रेष्वभिभूषिता: ॥१५॥
यथा-उपजोषम् वासांसि
according to preference, clothes
परिधाय-अहतानि ते
wore, unstitched they
कुशेषु प्राविशत्-सर्वे
on Kush grass(mats) sat all
प्राक्-अग्रे अभिभूषिता:
towards east facing, with ornaments attired
According to their preferences, they wore clothes which were unstitched and also were adorned with ornaments. They then sat on the mats of the Kusha grass the blade of which were pointing towards the east.
प्राङ्गमुखेषूपविषटेषु सुरेषु दितिजेषु च ।
धूपामोदितशालायां जुष्टायां माल्यदीपकै: ॥१६॥
प्राङ्ग-मुखेषु-उपविषटेषु
(when) east facing were sitting
सुरेषु दितिजेषु च
the gods, the sons of Diti (Daityas) and
धूप-आमोदित-शालायाम्
by innocence scented hall
जुष्टायाम् माल्य दीपकै:
assembled, by garlands and lamps
When the gods and Daityas, the sons of Diti had assembled in the hall scented with incense and garlands and lamps and sat facing the east ,….
तस्यां नरेन्द्र करभोरुरुशद्दुकूलश्रोणीतटालसगतिर्मदविह्वलाक्षी ।
सा कूजती कनकनूपुरशिञ्जितेन कुम्भस्तनी कलशपाणिरथाविवेश ॥१७॥
तस्याम् नरेन्द्र करभोरु:-
on her, O King! like on an elephant
उशत्-दुकूल-श्रोणी-तट-
young's thighs, a beautiful piece of cloth waist region
अलस-गति:-मद-विह्वल-आक्षी
slow gait, intoxication impelled eyes
सा कूजती कनक-नूपुर-
she resounding golden anklets
शिञ्जितेन कुम्भ-स्तनी
tinkle, pitcher breasted
कलश-पाणि:-अथ-आविवेश
pot in hand, then entered
O King! On her elephant young's trunk like thighs wearing a beautiful cloth from the waist region, in a slow gait, with intoxication impelled eyes, resounding the tinkle of her golden anklets, pot in hand, she, the pitcher breasted, then entered.
तां श्रीसखीं कनककुण्डलचारुकर्णनासाकपोलवदनां परदेवताख्याम् ।
संवीक्ष्य संमुमुहुरुत्स्मितवीक्षणेन देवासुरा विगलितस्तनपट्टिकान्ताम् ॥१८॥
ताम् श्री-सखीम् कनक-कुण्डल-
her, (Goddess) Shree's friend, golden ear-rings,
चारु-कर्ण-नासा-कपोल-वदनाम्
charming ears, nose, cheeks faced,
पर-देवता-आख्याम्
Supreme Deity known as
संवीक्ष्य संमुमुहु:-उत्
watching intently, enchanted indeed
स्मित-वीक्षणेन देव-असुरा:-
by smiling side glances, the gods and Asuras
विगलित-स्तन-पट्टिका-अन्ताम्
slipped from the breast, the cloth's part
Known as the Supreme Deity, indeed the friend of Goddess Shree Laxmi, intently seeing Her, with golden ear-rings, charming ears, nose, cheeks and face, the gods and the Asuras, were again and again enchanted by her coy smile and side glances, even as a part of her cloth slipped from her breast.
असुराणां सुधादानं सर्पाणामिव दुर्नयम् ।
मत्वा जातिनृशंसानां न तां व्यभजदच्युत: ॥१९॥
असुराणाम् सुधा-दानम्
to the Asuras, nectar giving
सर्पाणाम्-इव दुर्नयम्
to the serpants like, unwise
मत्वा जाति-नृशंसानाम्
deciding, the race to be cruel
न ताम् व्यभजत्-अच्युत:
not that divided Lord Achyuta
Deciding that to give nectar to the cruel race of Asuras was as unwise as giving milk to the serpants, Lord Achyuta did not divide it for them.
कल्पयित्वा पृथक् पङ्क्तीरुभयेषां जगत्पति: ।
तांश्चोपवेशयामास स्वेषु स्वेषु च पङ्क्तिषु ॥२०॥
कल्पयित्वा पृथक् पङ्क्ती:-
demarcating separate rows
उभयेषाम् जगत्पति:
for both of them, The Lord of the universe
तान्-च-उपवेशयामास
them and made to sit
स्वेषु स्वेषु च पङ्क्तिषु
in their own and rows
The Lord of the universe demarcated separate rows for both of them and made them sit in their own row.
दैत्यान्गृहीतकलशो वञ्चयन्नुपसञ्चरै: ।
दूरस्थान् पाययामास जरामृत्युहरां सुधाम् ॥२१॥
दैत्यान्-गृहीत-कलश:
the Daityas holding the pot
वञ्चयन्-उपसञ्चरै:
deceiving by coy behaviour
दूरस्थान् पाययामास
at a distance (seated) gave to drink
जरा-मृत्यु-हराम् सुधाम्
old age and death preventing nectar
Deceiving the Daityas by His coy behaviour, and holding the pot, He gave the old age and death preventing nectar to the gods seated at a distance.
ते पालयन्त: समयमसुरा: स्वकृतं नृप ।
तूष्णीमासन्कृतस्नेहा: स्त्रीविवादजुगुप्सया ॥२२॥
ते पालयन्त: समयम्-
they adhering to the promise,
असुरा: स्वकृतम् नृप
the Asuras, agreed to, O King!
तूष्णीम्-आसन्-कृत-स्नेहा:
silent were, having bestowed love
स्त्री-विवाद-जुगुप्सया
with a woman controversy wanting to avoid
The Asuras kept quiet, as they adhered to the promise they had agreed to, and having bestowed their love on her, and also to avoid controversy with a woman.
तस्यां कृतातिप्रणया: प्रणयापायकातरा: ।
बहुमानेन चाबद्धा नोचु: किञ्चन विप्रियम् ॥२३॥
तस्याम् कृत-अति-प्रणया:
in her, placing all love
प्रणय-अपाय-कातरा:
that love losing afraid of
बहु-मानेन च-आबद्धा:
by most regard and tied down by,
न-ऊचु: किञ्चन विप्रियम्
did not say anything unwelcome
They had placed all their love in Her, and were afraid of losing it, and were also tied down by the regard given to them, so they did not say anything unwelcome.
देवलिङ्गप्रतिच्छन्न: स्वर्भानुर्देवसंसदि ।
प्रविष्ट: सोममपिबच्चन्द्रार्काभ्यां च सूचित: ॥२४॥
देव-लिङ्ग-प्रतिच्छन्न:
in gods' garb disguised
स्वर्भानु:-देव-संसदि प्रविष्ट:
Raahu in the gods' row entered
सोमम्-अपिबत्-
nectar drank
चन्द्र-अर्काभ्याम् च सूचित:
by the Moon and Sun was pointed out
Raahu, disguised in the garb of the gods, entered the row of the gods, and drank the nectar, and was pointed out by the Moon and the Sun.
चक्रेण क्षुरधारेण जहार पिबत: शिर: ।
हरिस्तस्य कबन्धस्तु सुधयाप्लावितोऽपतत् ॥२५॥
चक्रेण क्षुर-धारेण जहार
by the discus razor edged, cut off
पिबत: शिर:
while drinking the head
हरि:-तस्य कबन्ध:-तु
Lord Shree Hari his the trunk indeed
सुधया-अप्लावित:-अपतत्
by the nectar not touched, fell down
Lord Shree Hari, with His razor sharp discus, cut off his head as he was drinking the nectar. As the trunk was not touched by the nectar, it fell down.
शिरस्त्वमरतां नीतमजो ग्रहमचीक्लृपत् ।
यस्तु पर्वणि चन्द्रार्कावभिधावति वैरधी: ॥२६॥
शिर:-तु-अमरताम् नीतम्-
the head indeed, to immortality raised
अज: ग्रहम्-अचीक्लृपत्
Brahmaa, a planet (deity) made
य:-तु पर्वणि चन्द्र-अर्कौ-
who indeed in fortnights, the Moon and the Sun
अभिधावति वैरधी:
chases harbouring enmity
The head was raised to immortality, and Brahmaa made it a deity of a planet, which in the fortnights, harbouring enmity, chases the Moon and the Sun.
पीतप्रायेऽमृते देवैर्भगवाँल्लोकभावन: ।
पश्यतामसुरेन्द्राणां स्वं रूपं जगृहे हरि: ॥२७॥
पीत-प्राये-अमृते देवै:-
having drunk almost the nectar by the gods,
भगवान्-लोकभावन:
The Lord, the universe Protector
पश्यताम्-असुरेन्द्राणाम्
as they looked on the Asura chiefs
स्वम् रूपम् जगृहे हरि:
own form assumed Lord Shree Hari
When, the gods had almost finished drinking the nectar, The Lord Shree Hari, Protector of the universe, assumed His own form as the chiefs of the Asuras looked on.
एवं सुरासुरगणा: समदेशकालहेत्वर्थकर्ममतयोऽपि फले विकल्पा: ।
तत्रामृतं सुरगणा: फलमञ्जसाऽऽपुर्यत्पादपङ्कजरज: श्रयणान्न दैत्या: ॥२८॥
एवम् सुर-असुर-गणा:
in this manner, the gods' and the demons' groups
सम-देश-काल-हेतु-
in same place time, purpose,
अर्थ-कर्म-मतय:-अपि
means, effort and mind even
फले विकल्पा:
in result were different
तत्र-अमृतम् सुर-गणा:
there, the nectar, the gods' hosts
फलम्-अञ्जसा-आपु:-
the result easily got
यत्-पाद-पङ्कज-रज:
because His feet lotus dust
श्रयणात्-न दैत्या:
resorted to, not the Daityas
In this manner, the groups of the gods and the demons, put their efforts with the same purpose, with the same intention and with the same means, in the same place and time, but, their rewards were different, because the hosts of gods had resorted to the dust of His lotus feet, and the Daityas did not.
यत् युज्यतेऽसुवसुकर्ममनोवचोभिर्देहात्मजादिषु नृभिस्तदसत् पृथक्त्वात् ।
तैरेव सद्भवति यत् क्रियतेऽपृथक्त्वात् सर्वस्य तद् भवति मूलनिषेचनं यत् ॥२९॥
यत् युज्यते-
that activity (done)
असु-वसु-कर्म-मन:-वचोभि:-
by life, wealth, organs of action, speech
देह्-आत्मज-आदिषु नृभि:-
for own body, progeny or others, by men
तत्-असत् पृथक्त्वात्
that is fruitless, because of different from (divine)
तै:-एव सत्-भवति
those only fruitful are
यत् क्रियते-अपृथक्त्वात्
which are done by indiscrimination (with divine)
सर्वस्य तद् भवति
all that becomes (like)
मूल-निषेचनम् यत्
the root watering because
All those activities which are done by men by their life, wealth, organs of action or speech, for themselves or for the progeny or for others, are fruitless, because they are different from the divine. Only those actions which are done inclusive of the divine are fruitful for all, because they are like watering the root of the tree, nourishing the whole tree.
श्रीमद्भागते महापुराणे पार्महंस्यां संहितायां अष्टमे स्कन्धे अमृतमथने नवम: अध्याय: ॥९॥
Thus ends the ninth discourse, comprised in the story of the churning of the ocean for the sake of nectar, in Book Eight of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
