राजा-उवाच -
The King said -
मन्वन्तरेषु भगवान्यथा मन्वादयस्त्विमे ।
यस्मिन्कर्मणि ये येन नियुक्तास्तद् वदस्व मे ॥१॥
मन्वन्तरेषु भगवान्-यथा
in the Manvantaras, O Holy One!, how
मनु-आदय:-तु-इमे
the Manu and others, these,
यस्मिन्-कर्मणि ये येन
in what work they, by whom
नियुक्ता:-तत् वदस्व मे
were engaged, that do tell me
O Holy One! Do tell me, about these Manus and others. in the various Manvantaras, how and by whom were they engaged and in what work?
ऋषि:-उवाच -
The sage said -
मनवो मनुपुत्राश्च मुनयश्च महीपते ।
इन्द्रा: सुरगणाश्चैव सर्वे पुरुषशासना: ॥२॥
मनव: मनु-पुत्रा:-च
the Manus, Manu's sons and
मुनय:-च महीपते
the sages and O King!
इन्द्रा: सुरगणा:-च-एव
the Indras, the gods and also
सर्वे पुरुष-शासना:
everyone are by (Primary) Purusha commanded
O Ruler of the earth! The Manus, the sons of the Manus, the sages, and the Indras and the gods every one is commanded by The Supreme Person.
यज्ञादयो या: कथिता: पौरुष्यस्तनवो नृप ।
मन्वादयो जगद्यात्रां नयन्त्याभि: प्रचोदिता: ॥३॥
यज्ञ-आदय: या: कथिता:
Yagya and the others, those told about
पौरुष्य:-तनव: नृप
of The Person's incarnations, O King!
मनु-आदय: जगत्-यात्राम्
Manus and others, universe's administration
नयन्ति-आभि: प्रचोदिता:
carry on, by these directed
O King! About the various incarnations of The Supreme Person, like the Yagya Purusha and the others, about which I have told you, by their direction only Manu and the others carry on the administration of the universe.
चतुर्युगान्ते कालेन ग्रस्ताञ्छ्रुतिगणान्यथा ।
तपसा ऋषयोऽपश्यन्यतो धर्म: सनातन: ॥४॥
चतुर्युग-अन्ते कालेन ग्रस्तान्-
of four Yugas at the end, by Time destroyed
श्रुति-गणान्-यथा
the Vedic collection, when
तपसा ऋषय:-अपश्यन्-
by asceticism the seers perceive
यत: धर्म: सनातन:
from which the religion eternal
At the end of the four Yugas, when, the collection of the text of the Vedas are destroyed, the seers, by their asceticism perceive them, from which the eternal religion ensues.
ततो धर्मं चतुश्पादं मनवो हरिणोदिता: ।
युक्ता: सञ्चारयन्त्यद्धा स्वे स्वे काले महीं नृप ॥५॥
तत: धर्मम् चतुश्पादम्
then, Dharma's the four pillars
मनव: हरिणा-उदिता:
the Manus, by Shree Hari directed
युक्ता: सञ्चारयन्ति-अद्धा
carefully promote, in fact
स्वे स्वे काले महीम् नृप
in their own times, the earth O King!
O King! Then, in fact, directed by Shree Hari, the Manus in their time, carefully promote the four pillars of Dharma on the earth.
पालयन्ति प्रजापाला यावदन्तं विभागश: ।
यज्ञभागभुजो देवा ये च तत्रान्विताश्च तै: ॥६॥
पालयन्ति प्रजापाला:
protect the Prajaapalas, (the sons of Manus)
यावत्-अन्तम् विभागश:
till the end, as per division
यज्ञ-भाग भुज: देवा:
the sacrifice portions, enjoy the gods
ये च तत्र-अन्विता:-च तै:
those and there connected and by them
Till the end of the Manvantara, the Prajaapaalas,that is, the sons of the Manus protect the religion according to their division. And the gods and those who are connected with the sacrifices, enjoy their share of the sacrifices.
इन्द्रो भगवता दत्तां त्रैलोक्यश्रियमूर्जिताम् ।
भुञ्जान: पाति लोकांस्त्रीन् कामं लोके प्रवर्षति ॥७॥
इन्द्र: भगवता दत्ताम्
Indra, by The Lord given
त्रैलोक्य-श्रियम्-ऊर्जिताम्
of the three worlds' the bounty limitless
भुञ्जान: पाति लोकान्-त्रीन्
enjoys, protects the worlds three
कामम् लोके प्रवर्षति
at will on the worlds, showers rain
Indra, enjoys the limitless bounty of the three worlds conferred on him by The Lord. He protects the three worlds and showers rain on them at will.
ज्ञानं चानुयुगं ब्रूते हरि: सिद्धस्वरूपधृक् ।
ऋषिरूपधर: कर्म योगं योगेशरूपधृक् ॥८॥
ज्ञानम् च-अनुयुगम् ब्रूते
wisdom and in every Yuga, teaches
हरि: सिद्ध-स्वरूप-धृक्
Shree Hari, Siddha form taking
ऋषि-रूप-धर: कर्म
seer form taking, (teaches) rituals
योगम् योगेश-रूप-धृक्
Yoga (teaches) Yoga master's form taking
In every Yuga Shree Hari teaches wisdom by taking the form of the Siddhas, teaches rituals by taking the form of the seers, and teaches Yoga by taking the form of the masters of Yoga.
सर्गं प्रजेशरूपेण दस्यून्हन्यात् स्वराड्वपु: ।
कालरूपेण सर्वेषामभावाय पृथग्गुण: ॥९॥
सर्गम् प्रजेश-रूपेण
creation, in the lord of created beings' form
दस्यून्-हन्यात् स्वराड्-वपु:
robbers destroys, in the sole ruler form
काल-रूपेण सर्वेषाम्-
in Time form of all
अभावाय पृथक्-गुण:
disappearance, of diverse nature
He carries on creation in the form of the lord of the created beings, destroys the robbers in the form of the sole Ruler, and in the form of Time makes everything of diverse natures disappear.
स्तूयमानो जनैरेभिर्मायया नामरूपया ।
विमोहितात्मभिर्नानादर्शनैर्न च दृश्यते ॥१०॥
स्तूयमान: जनै:-एभि:-
exalted by people these
मायया नाम-रूपया
by Maayaa, by (various) names and forms
विमोहित-आत्मभि:-
deluded in themselves
नाना-दर्शनै:-न च दृश्यते
by various philosophies, not and is perceived
He is exalted in various names and forms, by these people, who are deluded in themselves, by various philosophies, but they do not perceive Him.
एतत् कल्पविकल्पस्य प्रमाणं परिकीर्तितम् ।
यत्र मन्वन्तराण्याहुश्चतुर्दश पुराविद: ॥११॥
एतत् कल्प विकल्पस्य
this, of Kalpa and of Mahaa-kalpa,
प्रमाणम् परिकीर्तितम्
duration is explained
यत्र मन्वन्तराणि-आहु:-
where the Manvantaras, are said to be
चतुर्दश पुराविद:
fourteen, by the knowers of the ancient lore
The duration of the Kalpa and that of the Mahaa-kalpa has been explained, in which the Manvantaras are said to be fourteen by the knowers of the ancient lore.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां अष्टमे स्कन्धे चतुर्दश: अध्याय: ॥१४॥
Thus ends the fourteenth discourse in Book Eight of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
