श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं पुत्रेषु नष्टेषु देवमातादितिस्तदा ।
हृते त्रिविष्टपे दैत्यै: पर्यतप्यदनाथवत् ॥१॥
एवम् पुत्रेषु नष्टेषु
in this manner, the sons having vanished
देव-माता-अदिति:-तदा
the gods' mother Aditi, then,
हृते त्रिविष्टपे दैत्यै:
having taken over the heaven by the Daityas,
पर्यतप्यत्-अनाथ-वत्
was distressed, help-less like
In this manner, after the sons had disappeared, the gods' mother Aditi, seeing the heaven being taken over by the Daityas, was very much distressed like a helpless-woman.
एकदा कश्यपस्तस्या आश्रमं भगवानगात् ।
निरुत्सवं निरानन्दं समाधेर्विरतश्चिरात् ॥२॥
एकदा कश्यप:-तस्या:
one day, Kashyapa, to her
आश्रमम् भगवान्-अगात्
hermitage, the all-powerful went
निरुत्सवम् निरानन्दम्
cheerless, joyless
समाधे:-विरत:-चिरात्
Samadhi having completed for long
One day, long after his Samadhi was over, the all powerful Kashyapa went to her hermitage which was cheer-less and joy-less.
स पत्नीं दीनवदनां कृतासनपरिग्रह: ।
सभाजितो यथान्यायमिदमाह कुरूद्वह: ॥३॥
स: पत्नीम् दीन-वदनाम्
he, to his wife with sad face
कृत-आसन-परिग्रह:
having seat taken,
सभाजित: यथा-न्यायम्-
welcomed as per required
इदम्-आह कुरूद्वह:
this said, O Kurus' Scion!
O Scion of the Kurus! He having taken a seat, and being welcomed as necessary, he spoke thus to his wife who had a sad face.
अप्यभद्रं न विप्राणां भद्रे लोकेऽधुनाऽऽगतम् ।
न धर्मस्य न लोकस्य मृत्योश्छन्दानुवर्तिन: ॥४॥
अपि-अभद्रम् न विप्राणाम्
is it that misfortune, not on the Braahmanas
भद्रे लोके-अधुना-आगतम्
O Good Lady! on the people, now has come
न धर्मस्य न लोकस्य
not on righteousness, not on the people
मृत्यो:-छन्द-अनुवर्तिन:
Death's commands the followers
O Good Lady! Is not, some misfortune come at this time to the Braahmanas, or to righteousness, or to the people who are the followers of Death's commands.
अपि वा कुशलं किञ्चिद् गृहेषु गृहमेधिनि ।
धर्मस्यार्थस्य कामस्य यत्र योगो ह्ययोगिनाम् ॥५॥
अपि वा कुशलम् किञ्चिद्
or is all well, somewhat,
गृहेषु गृह-मेधिनि
in some houses of the householders
धर्मस्य-अर्थस्य कामस्य
of righteousness, wealth, and desires
यत्र योग: हि-अयोगिनाम्
where, Yoga is of the non-yogis
Or, is all well in some of the houses, where the householders, who are not Yogis, but pursue righteousness, wealth, and desires, like a Yogi pursues Yoga.
अपि वातिथयोऽभ्येत्य कुटुम्भासक्तया त्वया ।
गृहादपूजिता याता: प्रत्युत्थानेन वा क्वचित् ॥६॥
अपि वा-अतिथय:-अभ्येत्य
is it or, guests having come
कुटुम्भ-आसक्तया त्वया
family engrossed in by you
गृहात्-अपूजिता: याता:
from the house unhonoured, went away,
प्रत्युत्थानेन वा क्वचित्
having not risen, or at all
Or is it that unexpected guests, having come to your house went away unhonoured by you, even by your not having risen to welcome them, as you were engrossed in the family.
गृहेषु येष्वतिथयो नार्चिता: सलिलैरपि ।
यदि निर्यान्ति ते नूनं फेरुराजगृहोपमा: ॥७॥
गृहेषु येषु-अतिथय:
the houses in which, the guests
न-अर्चिता: सलिलै:-अपि
are not entertained with water even
यदि निर्यान्ति ते नूनम्
if they go away, those (houses) certainly
फेरुराज-गृह-उपमा:
are jackal leader's den like
Those houses where the guests are not entertained even with water and if they go away, certainly, those houses are like the dens of the leaders of the jackals.
अप्यग्नयस्तु वेलायां न हुता हविषा सति ।
त्वयोद्विग्नधिया भद्रे प्रोषिते मयि कर्हिचित् ॥८॥
अपि-अग्नय:-तु वेलायाम्
is it (that) the fires indeed, in time
न हुता: हविषा सति
were not fed with oblations, O Good Lady!
त्वया-उद्विग्न-धिया भद्रे
by you distressed minded, O Blessed One!
प्रोषिते मयि कर्हिचित्
being away me, at some time
O Good lady! Is it that at some time, because your mind was distressed by my being away, O Blessed One the sacred fires were not fed in time with oblations, by you?
यत्पूजया कामदुघान्याति लोकान्गृहान्वित: ।
ब्राह्मणोऽग्निश्च वै विष्णो: सर्वदेवात्मनो मुखम् ॥९॥
यत्-पूजया काम-दुघान्-
by whose worship desires granting
याति लोकान्-गृहान्वित:
avail the worlds, the householders
ब्राह्मण:-अग्नि:-च वै विष्णो:
Braahmanas, fire and indeed Lord Vishnu
सर्व-देव-आत्मन: मुखम्
of all the gods the soul, the mouth
By the worship of the wishes granting Braahmanas and fire, the householders are able to attain the worlds. They are the mouth of Lord Vishnu and the soul of all the gods.
अपि सर्वे कुशलिनस्तव पुत्रा मनस्विनि ।
लक्षयेऽस्वस्थमात्मानं भवत्या लक्षणैरहम् ॥१०॥
अपि सर्वे कुशलिन:-
is it that all is well
तव पुत्रा: मनस्विनि
with your sons, O Proud Lady!
लक्षये-अस्वस्थम्-आत्मानम्
see unwell yourself,
भवत्या लक्षणै:-अहम्
by your signs, I
O Proud lady! Is it that all is well with your sons. I notice yourself to be unwell by your outward signs.
अदिति: -उवाच -
Aditi said -
भद्रं द्विजगवां ब्रह्मन्धर्मस्यास्य जनस्य च ।
त्रिवर्गस्य परं क्षेत्रं गृहमेधिन्गृहा इमे ॥११॥
भद्रम् द्विज-गवाम् ब्रह्मन्-
all is well with Braahmanas, cows, O Holy sage!
धर्मस्य-अस्य जनस्य च
of righteousness this person and
त्रिवर्गस्य परम् क्षेत्रम्
of the three pursuits, the best field
गृहमेधिन्-गृहा: इमे
the houses these
O Holy sage! All is well with the Braahmanas and the cows and with righteousness and even this person, me. O Master of the house! The best field for the pursuit of the three, Dharma, Artha and Kaama, these households, are also well.
अग्नयोऽतिथयो भृत्या भिक्षवो ये च लिप्सव: ।
सर्वं भगवतो ब्रह्मन्ननुध्यानान्न रिष्यति ॥१२॥
अग्नय:-अतिथय: भृत्या:
the fires, guests, servants,
भिक्षव: ये च लिप्सव:
beggars, those and seeking (something)
सर्वम् भगवत: ब्रह्मन्-
all (of them) of your, O holy Brahman!
अनुध्यानात्-न रिष्यति
by thinking of, is not neglected
O Holy Brahman! Even though thinking of you, the fires, guests, servants and beggars, all those who came seeking something have been taken care of by me, nothing was neglected.
को नु मे भगवन्कामो न सम्पद्यते मानस: ।
यस्या भवान्प्रजाध्यक्ष एवं धर्मान्प्रभाषते ॥१३॥
क: नु मे भगवन्-काम:
which not my, O Holy One! desire
न सम्पद्यते मानस:
is not fulfilled of the mind
यस्या: भवान्-प्रजाध्यक्ष:
of whom, you, The lord of the beings,
एवम् धर्मान्-प्रभाषते
thus, the duties teaches
O Holy One! Which desire of my mind will not be fulfilled, to whom, the lord of the created beings, you, teaches duties in this manner.
तवैव मारीच मन:शरीरजा: प्रजा इमा: सत्त्वरजस्तमोजुष: ।
समो भवांस्तास्वसुरादिषु प्रभो तथापि भक्तं भजते महेश्वर: ॥१४॥
तव-एव मारीच
of you alone, O Son of Marichi!
मन:-शरीर-जा: प्रजा: इमा:
from mind and body born, people these
सत्त्व-रज:-तम:-जुष:
of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas containing
सम: भवान्-तासु-असुर-आदिषु
equal are you, to them the Asuras and others
प्रभो तथापि भक्तं
O Lord! Yet, the devotees
भजते महेश्वर:
attached to, is The Supreme Lord
O Son of Marichi! From your mind and body alone all these people are born, who consist of Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. Though you are equal towards the Asuras and others, The Supreme Lord is more attached to the devotees.
तस्मादीश भजन्त्या मे श्रेयश्चिन्तय सुव्रत ।
हृतश्रियो हृतस्थानान्सपत्नै: पाहि न: प्रभो ॥१५॥
तस्मात्-ईश भजन्त्या: मे
therefore, of the serving me,
श्रेय:-चिन्तय सुव्रत
good do consider, O Holy vowed One!
हृत-श्रिय: हृत-स्थानान्-
of snatched wealth, snatched residence
सपत्नै: पाहि न: प्रभो
by the enemies, save us O Master!
O Holy vowed One! Therefore, do consider that which is good for me, your servant. O Master! save us, whose wealth has been snatched and whose residence has been taken over by the enemies.
परैर्विवासिता साहं मग्ना व्यसनसागरे ।
ऐश्वर्यं श्रीर्यश: स्थानं हृतानि प्रबलैर्मम ॥१६॥
परै:-विवासिता सा-अहम्
by the foes, exiled that I,
मग्ना व्यसन-सागरे
am merged in sorrow ocean
ऐश्वर्यम् श्री:-यश: स्थानम्
fortune, splendour, glory and abode
हृतानि प्रबलै:-मम
are usurped by the powerful, mine
That I, exiled by the foes am merged in the ocean of sorrow. My fortune, splendour, glory and abode are usurped by the powerful ones.
यथा तानि पुन: साधो प्रपद्येरन् ममात्मजा: ।
तथा विधेहि कल्याणं धिया कल्याणकृत्तम ॥१७॥
यथा तानि पुन: साधो
so that those again, O Noble One!
प्रपद्येरन् मम-आत्मजा:
are retrieved by my sons
तथा विधेहि कल्याणम्
thus advise the good
धिया कल्याणकृत्तम
by judgement, O Great Benefactor!
O Noble One! Do advise by your good judgement as to how my sons may again retrieve those, O Great Benefactor!
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवमभ्यर्थितोऽदित्या कस्तामाह स्मयन्निव ।
अहो मायाबलं विष्णो: स्नेहबद्धमिदं जगत् ॥१८॥
एवम्-अभ्यर्थित:-अदित्या
thus entreated by Aditi
क:-ताम्-आह स्मयन्-इव
Kashyapa, to her said, smiling as if
अहो माया-बलम् विष्णो:
Alas! Maya's might of Vishnu!
स्नेह-बद्धम्-इदम् जगत्
affection bound this world
Thus entreated by Aditi, Kashyapa told to her smilingly, 'Oh the might of Vishnu's delusive potency, Maaya. The world is bound by ties of affection.'
क्व देहो भौतिकोऽनात्मा क्व चात्मा प्रकृते: पर: ।
कस्य के पतिपुत्राद्या मोह एव हि कारणम् ॥१९॥
क्व देह: भौतिक:-अनात्मा
where stands the body of elements, soul-less
क्व च-आत्मा प्रकृते: पर:
and where the soul, from Prakriti beyond
कस्य के पति-पुत्र-आद्या:
whose who are husband sons and others
मोह: एव हि कारणम्
ignorant attachment alone indeed is the cause
In comparison, where does the soul-less material body stand and where the soul which is beyond Prakriti. Who is whose husband or son or others? Ignorant attachment alone is the cause of this infatuation.
उपतिष्ठस्व पुरुषं भगवन्तं जनार्दनम् ।
सर्वभूतगुहावासं वासुदेवं जगद्गुरुम् ॥२०॥
उपतिष्ठस्व पुरुषम्
worship The Person
भगवन्तम् जनार्दनम्
Supreme, of the devotees The Saviour
सर्व-भूत-गुहा-वासम्
of all created beings, in the heart residing
वासुदेवम् जगत्-गुरुम्
Vaasudeva, The universe preceptor
Therefore worship The Supreme Person, The saviour of the devotees, the resides in the hearts of all created beings, Vaasudeva, The preceptor of the universe.
स विधास्यति ते कामान् हरिर्दीनानुकम्पन: ।
अमोघा भगवद्भक्तिर्नेतरेति मतिर्मम ॥२१॥
स: विधास्यति ते कामान्-
He will fulfil your desires,
हरि:-दीने-अनुकम्पन:
Shree Hari, to the miserable, The compassionate
अमोघा भगवद्-भक्ति:-
unfailing is Lord's devotion
न-इतरा-इति-मति:-मम
not of others, this is opinion mine
He, Shree Hari, will fulfil your desires, Who is compassionate to the miserable. Devotion to the Lord is unfailing, not devotion to others. This is my opinion.
अदिति:-उवाच -
Aditi said -
केनाहं विधिना ब्रह्मन्नुपस्थास्ये जगत्पतिम् ।
यथा मे सत्यसङ्कल्पो विदध्यात् स मनोरथम् ॥२२॥
केन-अहम् विधिना ब्रह्मन्-
by what I method, O Holy sage!
उपस्थास्ये जगत्पतिम्
serve The universe's Ruler
यथा मे सत्य-सङ्कल्प:
so that my, The True Resolved
विदध्यात् स: मनोरथम्
may conduct, He, the desire
O Holy sage! By what method should I serve The Ruler of the universe, by which, He, The Lord of True Resolve may conduct my objective.
आदिश्य त्वं द्विजश्रेष्ठ विधिं तदुपधावनम् ।
आशु तुष्यति मे देव: सीदन्त्या: सह पुत्रकै: ॥२३॥
आदिश्य त्वम् द्विज-श्रेष्ठ
instruct you, O foremost of the Braahmanas!
विधिम् तत्-उपधावनम्
method that of worship
आशु तुष्यति मे देव:
soon is pleased on me The Lord
सीदन्त्या: सह पुत्रकै:
suffering with the sons
O Foremost of the Braahmanas! Give me instruction for that method of worship by which The Lord is soon pleased with me, suffering as I am along with my sons.
कश्यप उवाच -
Kashyapa said -
एतन्मे भगवान्पृष्ट: प्रजाकामस्य पद्मज: ।
यदाह ते प्रवक्ष्यामि व्रतं केशवतोषणम् ॥२४॥
एतत्-मे भगवान्-पृष्ट:
this, by me, The Lord was asked
प्रजा-कामस्य पद्मज:
progeny desiring, The lotus-born (Brahmaa)
यत्-आह ते प्रवक्ष्यामि
what (He) said, to you will tell
व्रतम् केशव-तोषणम्
the vow, Keshava to please
I, desirous of progeny, had asked this to The Lotus-born Lord Brahmaa. I will tell you the vow which He had said to me, which pleases Keshava.
फाल्गुनस्यामले पक्षे द्वादशाहं पयोव्रत: ।
अर्चयेदरविन्दाक्षं भक्त्या परमयान्वित: ॥२५॥
फाल्गुनस्य-अमले पक्षे
in (the month of) Phaalguna, in the bright fortnight
द्वादश-आहम् पयोव्रत:
for twelve days, milk subsisting on
अर्चयेत्-अरविन्द-आक्षम्
should worship the lotus eyed (Lord Vishnu)
भक्त्या परमया-अन्वित:
with devotion, deeply involved
In the bright fortnight of the month of Phaalguna, subsisting on milk, immersed in deep devotion, one should worship the lotus eyed Lord Vishnu.
सिनीवाल्यां मृदाऽऽलिप्य स्नायात् क्रोडविदीर्णया ।
यदि लभ्येत वै स्रोतस्येतं मन्त्रमुदीरयेत् ॥२६॥
सिनीवाल्याम् मृदा-आलिप्य
on the last day of dark fortnight, mud smearing
स्नायात् क्रोड-विदीर्णया
should bathe, by the boar dug
यदि लभ्येत वै स्रोतसि-
if available, indeed in a stream
एतम् मन्त्रम्-उदीरयेत्
this Mantra should chant
On the last day of the dark fortnight, one should smear the mud dug by a boar, if available, and should bathe in a stream, and chant this Mantra….
त्वं देव्यादिवराहेण रसाया: स्थानमिच्छता ।
उद्धृतासि नमस्तुभ्यं पाप्मानं मे प्रणाशय ॥२७॥
त्वम् देवि-आदि-वराहेण
'You, O Goddess! by the Primary boar,
रसाया: स्थानम्-इच्छता
from the deluge, footage seeking
उद्धृतासि नम:-तुभ्यम्
was lifted up, Hail to You!
पाप्मानम् मे प्रणाशय
sins mine, do destroy'
O Goddess! By The Primary boar you were lifted from the bottom of the deluge, as He sought footage. Hail to You! Do destroy my sins.'
निर्वर्तितात्मनियमो देवमर्चेत् समाहित: ।
अर्चायां स्थण्डिले सूर्ये जले वह्नौ गुरावपि ॥२८॥
निर्वर्तित-आत्म-नियम:
completing own daily routine
देवम्-अर्चेत् समाहित:
The Lord should worship with concentration
अर्चायाम् स्थण्डिले सूर्ये
in the worship in the image, alter, Sun
जले वह्नौ गुरौ-अपि
Water, Fire, Preceptor also
Having completed ones own daily routine, one should worship The Lord with concentration, and also worship Him in the image, alter, Sun, Water, Fire, and in the Preceptor.
नमस्तुभ्यं भगवते पुरुषाय महीयसे ।
सर्वभूतनिवासाय वासुदेवाय साक्षिणे ॥२९॥
नम:-तुभ्यम् भगवते
Hail to You! The Supreme
पुरुषाय महीयसे
Person, The greatest of the great,
सर्व-भूत-निवासाय
in all the created beings, The One residing,
वासुदेवाय साक्षिणे
to Vaasudeva The Witness
Hail to You! The Supreme Person, The greatest of the great, The One residing in all the created beings, Vaasudeva The Witness.
नमोऽव्यक्ताय सूक्ष्माय प्रधानपुरुषाय च ।
चतुर्विंशद्गुणज्ञाय गुणसंख्यानहेतवे ॥३०॥
नम:-अव्यक्ताय सूक्ष्माय
'Hail to The Unmanifest! The Subtle
प्रधान-पुरुषाय च
The Pradhaan, Purusha and
चतुर्विंशत्-गुणज्ञाय
twenty-four categories The Knower of
गुण-संख्यान-हेतवे
of the Twenty fifth and of Saankhya founder
'Hail to The Unmanifest Lord! The Subtle, The Pradhaan and The Purusha, The Knower of the twenty-four categories and The cause of the twenty fifth category and The founder of Saankhya philosophy.
नमो द्विशीर्ष्णे त्रिपदे चतु:शृङ्गाय तन्तवे ।
सप्तहस्ताय यज्ञाय त्रयीविद्यात्मने नम: ॥३१॥
नम: द्वि-शीर्ष्णे त्रि-पदे
Hail to The Two headed, The Three feeted
चतु:-शृङ्गाय तन्तवे
The One with four horns, Bestower of rewards
सप्त-हस्ताय यज्ञाय
The Seven Armed, the sacrifices presider
त्रयी-विद्या-आत्मने नम:
three knowledged, the form Hail
Hail to You in the form of The two headed, as the beginning and end of sacrifices, to the three feeted as the pressing of Soma juice thrice a day, The One with four horns, in the form of the four Vedas, The Bestower of the results of actions, The seven armed, in the form of the meters, The presider of the sacrifices, and in The form of the three knowledge of the rituals in the three Vedas.
नम: शिवाय रुद्राय नम: शक्तिधराय च ।
सर्वविद्याधिपतये भूतानां पतये नम: ॥३२॥

Salutations to Shiva, to Rudra
नम: शक्ति-धराय च
salutations to The wielder of power and
सर्व-विद्या-अधिपतये
to, of all the knowledge the Commander
भूतानाम् पतये नम:
to, of the ghosts The Ruler, Hail!
Salutations to Shiva, salutations to Rudra, to The wielder of power and to The Commander of all knowledge, to The Ruler of the ghosts, Hail!
नमो हिरण्यगर्भाय प्राणाय जगदात्मने ।
योगैश्वर्यशरीराय नमस्ते योगहेतवे ॥३३॥
नम: हिरण्य-गर्भाय
Salutations to Hiranyagarbha (Brahmaa)
प्राणाय जगत्-आत्मने
to The Life force, to The universe Soul
योग-ऐश्वर्य शरीराय
to Yoga's powers, to (Yoga) Personified,
नमस्ते योग-हेतवे
salutations, to the Yoga cause
Salutations to Hiranyagarbha (Brahmaa) to the Life force, to The Soul of the universe, to the Powers of Yoga, salutations, to The yoga Personified, and to The cause of Yoga.
नमस्ते आदिदेवाय साक्षिभूताय ते नम: ।
नारायणाय ऋषये नराय हरये नम: ॥३४॥
नम:-ते आदि-देवाय
salutations to You, The first Deity!
साक्षि-भूताय ते नम:
to The Witness standing as, to You salutations
नारायणाय ऋषये
To Naaraayana, the sage
नराय हरये नम:
to Nara, to Hari salutations
To You The first Deity, salutations, standing as The Witness of all. Salutations to You the sage Naaraayana, Nara, and Shree Hari.
नमो मरकतश्यामवपुषेऽधिगतश्रिये ।
केशवाय नमस्तुभ्यं नमस्ते पीतवाससे ॥३५॥
नम: मरकत-श्याम-वपुषे-
salutations to emerald green bodied
अधिगत-श्रिये
The winner of Shree
केशवाय नम:-तुभ्यम्
to Keshava, salutations to You
नमस्ते पीत-वाससे
salutations to the Yellow clothed
Salutations to You with a emerald green body, to The Winner of Shree, Keshava! Salutations to You, clad in yellow garments.
त्वं सर्ववरद: पुंसां वरेण्य वरदर्षभ ।
अतस्ते श्रेयसे धीरा: पादरेणुमुपासते ॥३६॥
त्वम् सर्व-वरद: पुंसाम्
You of all boons restorer, of the people
वरेण्य वरद-ऋषभ
worthy to be sought, of boon Bestower The Chief
अत:-ते श्रेयसे धीरा:
therefore Your for blessedness, the wise
पाद-रेणुम्-उपासते
feet dust worship
You are the Bestower of all boons, worthy to be sought after by the people, The Chief of the Bestower of boons, therefore, for blessedness, the wise worship the dust of Your feet.
अन्ववर्तन्त यं देवा: श्रीश्च तत्पादपद्मयो: ।
स्पृहयन्त इवामोदं भगवान्मे प्रसीदताम् ॥३७॥
अन्ववर्तन्त यम् देवा:
keep on serving, Whom the gods
श्री:-च तत्-पाद-पद्मयो:
Shree and Those feet lotuses'
स्पृहयन्त इव-आमोदम्
seeking as though the fragrance,
भगवान्-मे प्रसीदताम्
That Lord, to me may be gracious
May That Lord be gracious to me, Whose feet lotuses, the gods and Shree keep on serving, as though competing to seek their fragrance.
एतैर्मन्त्रैर्हृषीकेशमावाहनपुरस्कृतम् ।
अर्चयेच्छ्रद्धया युक्त: पाद्योपस्पर्शनादिभि: ॥३८॥
एतै:-मन्त्रै:-हृषीकेशम्-
by these Mantras, Lord Vishnu
आवाहन पुरस्कृतम्
invoking first
अर्चयेत्-श्रद्धया युक्त:
should worship with devotion imbued,
पाद्य-उपस्पर्शन-आदिभि:
by feet washing, touching (the water) and such
By these Mantras, one must first invoke Lord Vishnu, and then imbued with deep devotion, one must worship Him by washing His feet and touching the water and such rituals.
अर्चित्वा गन्धमाल्याद्यै: पयसा स्नपयेद् विभुम् ।
वस्त्रोपवीताभरणपाद्योपस्पर्शनैस्तत: ।
गन्धधूपादिभिश्चार्चेद् द्वादशाक्षरविद्यया ॥३९॥
अर्चित्वा गन्ध-माल्य-आद्यै:
having worshipped with incense, garlands, others
पयसा स्नपयेत् विभुम्
with milk bathe The Lord
वस्त्र-उपवीत-आभरण-
with raiment's, sacred thread, jewels,
पाद्य-उपस्पर्शनै:-तत:
washing of feet, water touching then
गन्ध-धूप-आदिभि:-च-अर्चेत्-
with sandal paste, incense, etc. and worship
द्वादश-अक्षर विद्यया
by the twelve letter Mantra
Having bathed The Lord with milk, and worshipped Him with garlands, one should then worship Him with raiment's, the sacred thread, jewels, washing of feet, touching of water, with sandal paste, incense and other things, and with the repeating of the twelve letter Mantra.
शृतं पयसि नैवेद्यं शाल्यन्नं विभवे सति ।
ससर्पि: सगुडं दत्त्वा जुहुयान्मूलविद्यया ॥४०॥
शृतम् पयसि नैवेद्यम्
cooked milk (and rice), oblation (of food)
शाल्यन्नम् विभवे सति
and rice, capacity if is there
ससर्पि: सगुडम् दत्त्वा
with ghee, with jaggery offering
जुहुयात्-मूल-विद्यया
pour as oblation with the root Mantra
Pouring the oblation of milk and rice cooked together, with ghee and jaggery, according to ones capacity, one should repeat the root Mantra (of twelve letters).
निवेदितं तद् भक्ताय दद्याद् भुञ्जीत वा स्वयम् दत्त्वाऽऽचमनमर्चित्वा ताम्बूलं च निवेदयेत् ॥४१॥
निवेदितम् तत् भक्ताय
the offered, that to the devotee
दद्याद् भुञ्जीत वा स्वयम्
should give, eat or oneself
दत्त्वा-आचमनम्-अर्चित्वा
giving water to wash mouth, after worshipping,
ताम्बूलम् च निवेदयेत्
betel leaf and should offer
The food offered for oblation should be given to the devotee or should be eaten by oneself. After giving water to wash the mouth, and having worshipped, betel leaf should be offered.
जपेदष्टोत्तरशतं स्तुवीत स्तुतिभि: प्रभुम् ।
कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणं भूमौ प्रणमेद् दण्डवन्मुदा ॥४२॥
जपेत्-अष्ट-उत्तर-शतम्
should repeat One hundred and eight times
स्तुवीत स्तुतिभि: प्रभुम्
glorify with praises The Lord
कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणम् भूमौ
having circumambulating on the ground
प्रणमेत् दण्डवत्-मुदा
bow, lying like a log, delighted
One should repeat the Mantra one hundred and eight times, and then glorify The Lord with words of praises. Then one should lay on the ground like a log and do Namaskaara, with delight.
कृत्वा शिरसि तच्छेषां देवमुद्वासयेत् तत: ।
द्व्यवरान्भोजयेद् विप्रान्पायसेन यथोचितम् ॥४३॥
कृत्वा शिरसि तत्-शेषाम्
lifting to the head, all that remaining (flowers etc.)
देवम्-उद्वासयेत् तत:
the Lord should request to disperse, then
द्व्यवरान्-भोजयेद् विप्रान्-
two good should feed Braahmanas
पायसेन यथा-उचितम्
with rice boiled in milk and sugar, as proper
Then, one should lift the remaining articles, flowers etc., to the head, and request The Lord to disperse. Then one must feed two good Braahmanas with rice boiled in milk and sugar, as proper.
भुञ्जीत तैरनुज्ञात: शेषं सेष्ट: सभाजितै:।
ब्रह्मचार्यथ तद्रात्र्यां श्वोभूते प्रथमेऽहनि ॥४४॥
भुञ्जीत तै:-अनुज्ञात:
should eat, by them ordered
शेषम् सेष्ट: सभाजितै:
the rest with the others, the respectful
ब्रह्मचारी-अथ तत्-रात्र्याम्
celibate then, that night
श्वो-भूते प्रथमे-अहनि
till next morning, the first day
As ordered by the respectful Braahmanas, should eat the remaining food with the others. Then that night should be celibate till the next morning , the first day of the vow.
स्नात: शुचिर्यथोक्तेन विधिना सुसमाहित: ।
पयसा स्नापयित्वार्चेद् यावद्व्रतसमापनम् ॥४५॥
स्नात: शुचि:-यथा-उक्तेन
having bathed, being pure, as explained
विधिना सुसमाहित:
by that method, with concentrated mind
पयसा स्नापयित्वा-अर्चेत्
with the milk boiled rice should worship,
यावत्-व्रत-समापनम्
till, The vow ends
Having bathed and keeping pure, with a concentrated mind, should bathe the Deity with rice boiled in milk and worship according to the method explained before, until the end of the vow.
पयोभक्षो व्रतमिदं चरेद् विष्ण्वर्चनादृत: ।
पूर्ववज्जुहुयादग्निं ब्राह्मणांश्चापि भोजयेत् ॥४६॥
पय:-भक्ष: व्रतम्-इदम् चरेत्
milk subsisting on, vow this must carry out
विष्णु-अर्चन-आद्दृत:
Vishnu's worship with reverence
पूर्व-वत्-जुहुयात्-अग्निम्
before like, pour oblation in the fire
ब्राह्मणान्-च-अपि भोजयेत्
Braahmanas and also should feed
One must carry out this vow of worshipping Lord Vishnu with reverence, by subsisting on milk, and like before should pour oblation into the fire and should also feed the Braahmanas.
एवं त्वहरह: कुर्याद् द्वादशाहं पयोव्रत: ।
हरेराराधनं होममर्हणं द्विजतर्पणम् ॥४७॥
एवम् तु-अहरह: कुर्याद्
like this, indeed, every day, should do
द्वादश-आहम् पयोव्रत:
for twelve days, 'Payovrata'
हरे:-आराधनम् होमम्-
with Shree Hari's worship, pouring oblations,
अर्हणम् द्विज-तर्पणम्
worshipping the image, Braahmana's feeding
Indeed, in this way, everyday for twelve days, to observe the 'Payovrata', one must worship Shree Hari, pour oblations into the fire, worship Shree Hari's image, and feed the Braahmanas.
प्रतिपद्दिनमारभ्य यावच्छुक्लत्रयोदशी ।
ब्रह्मचर्यमध:स्वप्नं स्नानं त्रिषवणं चरेद् ॥४८॥
प्रतिपत्-दिनम्-आरभ्य
from first day starting
यावत्-शुक्ल-त्रयोदशी
till, of bright (fortnight) the thirteenth
ब्रह्मचर्यम्-अध:-स्वप्नम्
strict continence, on floor sleeping
स्नानम् त्रि-षवणम् चरेत्
bathing three times should observe
Beginning from the first day of the bright fortnight of Phaalguna, till the thirteenth day of the bright fortnight, one must observe strict continence, must sleep on the floor and bathe three times a day.
वर्जयेदसदालापं भोगानुच्चावचांस्तथा ।
अहिंस्र: सर्वभूतानां वासुदेवपरायण: ॥४९॥
वर्जयेत्-असत्-आलापम्
should refrain from vile conversation
भोगान्-उच्च-अवचान्-तथा
luxuries great and small, and
अहिंस्र: सर्व-भूतानाम्
non-violent to all created beings
वासुदेव-परायण:
Vaasudeva devoted to
He should refrain from vile conversation, avoid all great and small luxuries, should be non-violent to all created beings and should be devoted to Lord Vaasudeva.
त्रयोदश्यामथो विष्णो: स्नपनं पञ्चकैर्विभो: ।
कारयेच्छास्त्रदृष्टेन विधिना विधिकोविदै: ॥५०॥
त्रयोदश्याम्-अथ: विष्णो:
on the thirteenth (day) then, of Lord Vishnu
स्नपनम् पञ्चकै:-विभो:
bathing, with five (things) of The Lord
कारयेत्-शास्त्र-दृष्टेन
should be performed, by the scriptures shown
विधिना विधि-कोविदै:
by the methods, by the method knowers
Then, on the thirteenth day, one must get to be performed the bathing of Lord Vishnu by the five substances, with the methods shown in the scriptures and by the knowers of those methods.
पूजां च महतीं कुर्याद् वित्तशाठ्यविवर्जित: ।
चरुं निरूप्य पयसि शिपिविष्टाय विष्णवे ॥५१॥
पूजाम् च महतीम् कुर्यात्
worship and extensive should do
वित्त-शाठ्य विवर्जित:
wealth squinting refraining from
चरुम् निरूप्य पयसि
'Charu' oblation pouring in the milk
शिपिविष्टाय विष्णवे
for the rays emitting Lord Vishnu
One should perform extensive worship of the rays emitting Lord Vishnu and pour oblation of 'Charu' in milk in fire as an offering to Him.
शृतेन तेन पुरुषं यजेत सुसमाहित: ।
नैवेद्यं चातिगुणवद् दद्यात्पुरुषतुष्टिदम् ॥५२॥
शृतेन तेन पुरुषम्
cooked, by that (Charu), The Supreme Person
यजेत सुसमाहित:
should propitiate with concentration of mind
नैवेद्यम् च-अति-गुण-वत्-
food and with high nutritious value
दद्यात्-पुरुष-तुष्टिदम्
should offer to Supreme Person, gratify Him
By that cooked Charu, one must propitiate The Supreme Person with a concentrated mind, and offer food of high nutritional value to gratify Him.
आचार्यं ज्ञानसम्पन्नं वस्त्राभरणधेनुभि: ।
तोषयेदृत्विजश्चैव तद्विद्ध्याराधनं हरे: ॥५३॥
आचार्यम् ज्ञान-सम्पन्नम्
the Preceptor, with knowledge accomplished
वस्त्र-आभरण धेनुभि:
with raiment's, jewels, cows
तोषयेत्-ऋत्विज:-च-एव
should gratify, the priests and also
तत्-विधि-आराधनम् हरे:
that kind of worship only of Shree Hari
One should gratify the Preceptor accomplished with knowledge and learning, and the priests with raiment's, jewels and cows and consider this also as the worship of Shree Hari.
भोजयेत् तान् गुणवता सदन्नेन शुचिस्मिते ।
अन्यांश्च ब्राह्मणाञ्छक्त्या ये च तत्र समागता: ॥५४॥
भोजयेत् तान् गुणवता
should feed them with nutritious
सत्-अन्नेन शुचि-स्मिते
pure food, O You with beautiful smile!
अन्यान्-च ब्राह्मणान्-शक्त्या
others and Braahmanas, according to capacity
ये च तत्र समागता:
who and there have come
O You with beautiful smile! One should feed them with nutritious pure food, and according to capacity, should feed the other Braahmanas also who have come there.
दक्षिणां गुरवे दद्यादृत्विग्भ्यश्च यथार्हत: ।
अन्नाद्येनाश्वपाकांश्च प्रीणयेत्समुपागतान् ॥५५॥
दक्षिणाम् गुरवे दद्यात्-
fees for rituals, to the Preceptor should give
ऋत्विग्भ्य:-च यथा-अर्हत:
to the priests and as per merit
अन्न-आद्येन-अश्वपाकान्-च
with food and other (things), the Chaandaala and
प्रीणयेत्-समुपागतान्
please, (who may have) come there
One should give fees for the rituals to the Preceptor and the priests as per merit. One must also please the Chaandaala and others who may have come there.
भुक्तवत्सु च सर्वेषु दीनान्धकृपणेषु च ।
विष्णोस्तत्प्रीणनं विद्वान्भुञ्जीत सह बन्धुभि: ॥५६॥
भुक्तवत्सु च सर्वेषु
having eaten and by all
दीन-अन्ध-कृपणेषु च
poor, blind, miserable and
विष्णो:-तत्-प्रीणनम्
Vishnu's that delight,
विद्वान्-भुञ्जीत सह बन्धुभि:
the wise should eat with kinsmen
When all have eaten, including the poor, blind and miserable, taking that to be the propitiation of Lord Vishnu, then, the wise person should eat with family and kinsmen.
नृत्यवादित्रगीतैश्च स्तुतिभि: स्वस्तिवाचकै: ।
कारयेत्तत्कथाभिश्च पूजां भगवतोऽन्वहम् ॥५७॥
नृत्य-वादित्र-गीतै:-च
with dance, music, songs and
स्तुतिभि: स्वस्ति-वाचकै:
praises, blessing words
कारयेत्-तत्-कथाभि:-च
should get by His stories and
पूजाम् भगवत:-अन्वहम्
worship of The Lord, every day
Everyday, with dance, music, singing of songs and with words of blessings, and with His stories, should get The Lord's worship done.
एतत्पयोव्रतं नाम पुरुषाराधनं परम् ।
पितामहेनाभिहितं मया ते समुदाहृतम् ॥५८॥
एतत्-पयोव्रतम् नाम
this 'Payovrata' named
पुरुष-आराधनम् परम्
The Primary Person's worship highest
पितामहेन-अभिहितम्
by Brahmaa told
मया ते समुदाहृतम्
by me to you, is well explained
This 'Payovrata' named is the highest worship of The Primary Person. It was told to me by Brahmaa, and I have explained it to you well.
त्वं चानेन महाभागे सम्यक्चीर्णेन केशवम् ।
आत्मना शुद्धभावेन नियतात्मा भजाव्ययम् ॥५९॥
त्वम् च-अनेन महाभागे
you and by this, O Noble lady!
सम्यक्-चीर्णेन केशवम्
well observed, Keshava
आत्मना शुद्ध-भावेन
with mind full of pure devotion
नियत-आत्मा भज-अव्ययम्
controlling the self, worship the Immortal
O Noble lady! By this vow, well observed, with a mind full of devotion and with control over your self, worship the Immortal Lord Keshava.
अयं वै सर्वयज्ञाख्य: सर्वव्रतमिति स्मृतम् ।
तप:सारमिदं भद्रे दानं चेश्वरतर्पणम् ॥६०॥
अयम् वै सर्व-यज्ञ-आख्य:
this indeed, the universal sacrifices is called
सर्व-व्रतम्-इति स्मृतम्
the universal vow, thus is known to be
तप:-सारम्-इदम् भद्रे
of all the austerities the essence this, O Good lady!
दानम् च-ईश्वर-तर्पणम्
charity and for God's gratification
O Good lady! This is called the universal sacrifice, and is known to be the universal vow, the essence of all austerities, and charity for the gratification of God.
त एव नियमा: साक्षात्त एव च यमोत्तमा: ।
तपो दानं व्रतं यज्ञो येन तुष्यत्यधोक्षज: ॥६१॥
ते एव नियमा: साक्षात्-
those alone are observances, in fact,
ते एव च यम-उत्तमा:
those alone and disciplines best
तप: दानम् व्रतम् यज्ञ:
austerities, charity, vows, sacrifice,
येन तुष्यति-अधोक्षज:
by which is gratified Lord Vishnu
Those observations of religious pursuit are real, in fact, those alone are the best disciplines, austerities, charity, vows and sacrifices, by which Lord Vishnu is gratified.
तस्मादेतद्व्रतं भद्रे प्रयता श्रद्धया चर ।
भगवान्परितुष्टस्ते वरानाशु विधास्यति ॥६२॥
तस्मात्-एतत्-व्रतम् भद्रे
therefore, this vow, O Good lady!
प्रयता श्रद्धया चर
with discipline and reverence observe
भगवान्-परितुष्ट:-ते
The Lord gratified, to you
वरान्-आशु विधास्यति
boons soon will grant
Therefore, O Good lady! Observe this vow with discipline and reverence. The Lord will be gratified and will soon grant boons to you.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां अष्टमस्कन्धे अदितिपयोव्रतकथनं नाम षोडश: अध्याय: ॥१६॥
Thus ends the sixteenth discourse entitled 'The procedure of (observing the vow of) Payovrata, disclosed to Aditi', in Book Eight of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
