श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इत्युक्ता सादिती राजन्स्वभर्त्रा कश्यपेन वै ।
अन्वतिष्ठद् व्रतमिदं द्वादशाहमतन्द्रिता ॥१॥
इत्युक्ता सा-अदिती राजन्-
thus told, she, Aditi, O King! (Pareekshit)
स्व-भर्त्रा कश्यपेन वै
by her husband Kashyapa indeed
अन्वतिष्ठत् व्रतम्-इदम्
observed the vow this
द्वादश-आहम्-अतन्द्रिता
for twelve days, carefully
O King! Thus instructed by her husband Kashyapa, indeed, she, Aditi, observed this vow for twelve days with carefulness.
चिन्तयन्त्येकया बुद्ध्या महापुरुषमीश्वरम् ।
प्रगृह्येन्द्रियदुष्टाश्वान्मनसा बुद्धिसारथि: ॥२॥
चिन्तयन्ती-एकया बुद्ध्या
contemplating with singular mind
महा-पुरुषम्-ईश्वरम्
The Supreme Person, The Almighty
प्रगृह्य-इन्द्रिय-दुष्ट-अश्वान्-
holding on the senses', unruly horses
मनसा बुद्धि-सारथि:
by the mind, the intellect as the charioteer
She contemplated with a singular mind on The Almighty Supreme Person, holding on the unruly horses of the senses with the mind and with the intellect as the charioteer.
मनश्चैकाग्रया बुद्ध्या भगवत्यखिलात्मनि ।
वासुदेवे समाधाय चचार ह पयोव्रतम् ॥३॥
मन:-च-एकाग्रया बुद्ध्या
mind and concentrated intellect
भगवति-अखिल-आत्मनि
in The Lord, in The Universal Soul
वासुदेवे समाधाय
in Vaasudeva firmly placing
चचार ह पयोव्रतम्
conducted indeed the Payovrata.
With a concentrated mind, she firmly placed her intellect in The Lord, The Universal Soul, and conducted the vow of Payovrata, indeed.
तस्या: प्रादुरभूत्तात भगवानादिपूरुष: ।
पीतवासाश्चतुर्बाहु: शङ्खचक्रगदाधर: ॥४॥
तस्या: प्रादुरभूत्-तात
for her appeared, O Dear One!
भगवान्-आदि-पूरुष:
The Almighty, The Primary Person
पीत-वासा:-चतु:-बाहु:
in yellow clad, four armed
शङ्ख-चक्र-गदा-धर:
conch, discuss, mace bearing
O Dear One! For her appeared The Almighty, The Primary Person, clad in yellow, four armed and bearing the conch, the discuss and the mace.
तं नेत्रगोचरं वीक्ष्य सहसोत्थाय सादरम् ।
ननाम भुवि कायेन दण्डवत् प्रीतिविह्वला ॥५॥
तम् नेत्र-गोचरम् वीक्ष्य
Him, with the eyes visible seeing
सहसा-उत्थाय सादरम्
suddenly, rising with reverence
ननाम भुवि कायेन दण्डवत्
bowed down on the ground, with body like a staff
प्रीति-विह्वला
with joy and love overwhelmed
Suddenly seeing Him, visible with the eyes, she rose with reverence, and bowed down to the ground with her body like a staff, overwhelmed with joy and love.
सोत्थाय बद्धाञ्जलिरीडितुं स्थिता नोत्सेह आनन्दजलाकुलेक्षणा ।
बभूव तूष्णीं पुलकाकुलाकृतिस्तद्दर्शनात्युत्सवगात्रवेपथु: ॥६॥
सा-उत्थाय बद्ध-अञ्जलि:-
she arising, with joined palms
ईडितुम् स्थिता न-उत्सेहे
to glorify stood, did not venture (to do so)
आनन्द-जल-आकुल-ईक्षणा
for the joyful tears bewildered eyes
बभूव तूष्णीम् पुलक-
became quiet, horripilation
आकुल-आकृति:-तत्-दर्शन-
induced body, His sight
अति-उत्सव-गात्र-वेपथु:
very festival, body shivering
She arose with joined palms to glorify Him but did not venture to do so, stood motionless, for the bewildered eyes flooded with joyful tears. She became quiet, her body shivering with the induced horripilation at the festival of His sight.
प्रीत्या शनैर्गद्गदया गिरा हरिं तुष्टाव सा देव्यदिति: कुरूद्वह ।
उद्वीक्षती सा पिबतीव चक्षुषा रमापतिं यज्ञपतिं जगत्पतिम् ॥७॥
प्रीत्या-शनै:-गद्गदया गिरा
lovingly, slowly, with faltering voice
हरिम् तुष्टाव सा
Shree Hari extolled she
देवी-अदिति: कुरूद्वह
the heavenly Aditi, O Scion of Kurus!
उद्वीक्षती सा पिबति-इव
looking up she, drinking as though
चक्षुषा रमा-पतिम्
with the eyes, Ramaa's spouse,
यज्ञ-पतिम् जगत्-पतिम्
Sacrifices' Lord, the universe's Ruler
Slowly and lovingly, with a faltering voice, she, the heavenly lady Aditi, extolled Shree Hari, O Scion of the Kurus. She looked up to Him, and was, as though drinking with her eyes, The Spouse of Ramaa, The Lord of the sacrifices and The Ruler of the universe.
अदिति:-उवाच -
Aditi said -
यज्ञेश यज्ञपुरुषाच्युत तीर्थपाद तीर्थश्रव: श्रवणमङ्गलनामधेय ।
आपन्नलोकवृजिनोपशमोदयाद्य शं न: कृधीश भगवन्नसि दीननाथ: ॥८॥
यज्ञ-ईश यज्ञ-पुरुष-
of sacrifices The Lord, sacrifice Personified
अच्युत तीर्थ-पाद तीर्थ-श्रव:
O Immortal! of holy feet, of holy fame
श्रवण-मङ्गल नाम-धेय
to hear auspicious names having
आपन्न-लोक-वृजिन-उपशम-
of the distressed people, sorrows ending
उदय-आद्य शम् न: कृधि-
manifested The Primary ,happiness our cause
ईश भगवन्-असि दीन-नाथ:
O Almighty! The Ruler! Are of the helpless, Saviour
O Lord of the sacrifices! O Personification of the sacrifices! O Immortal! With holy feet and holy fame, having names which are auspicious to hear, O Primary Person! Your manifestation is to end the sorrows of the distressed. O Almighty do cause our happiness, O Ruler and saviour of the downtrodden.
विश्वाय विश्वभवनस्थितिसंयमाय स्वैरं गृहीतपुरुशक्तिगुणाय भूम्ने ।
स्वस्थाय शश्वदुपबृंहितपूर्णबोधव्यापादितात्मतमसे हरये नमस्ते ॥९॥
विश्वाय विश्वभवन स्थिति
to The Universe (itself), for the universe's creation
संयमाय स्वैरं गृहीत-
sustenance and dissolution, at Your Own will taken
पुरु-शक्ति-गुणाय भूम्ने
many powers and Gunas, O Infinite Lord!
स्वस्थाय शश्वत्-उपबृंहित
established in Own Self, ever shining
पूर्ण-बोध-व्यापादिता
perfect wisdom dispersed
आत्म-तमसे हरये नमस्ते
Self ignorance, to Shree Hari Hail!
O Shree Hari! Hail to You, the Universe Itself, for the creation, sustenance and dissolution, Who has taken of Your own accord the many powers and Gunas. O Infinite Lord! You are established in Your Own Self and by Your ever shining wisdom disperse the Self ignorance.
आयु: परं वपुरभीष्टमतुल्यलक्ष्मीर्द्योभूरसा: सकलयोगगुणास्त्रिवर्ग: ।
ज्ञानं च केवलमनन्त भवन्ति तुष्टात् त्वत्तो नृणां किमु सपत्न जयादिराशी: ॥१०॥
आयु: परम् वपु:-अभीष्टम्-
age longest, body as desired
अतुल्य-लक्ष्मी:-द्यो:-भू-रसा:
unequal wealth, of heaven, earth, nether worlds,
सकल-योग-गुणा:-त्रि-वर्ग:
all the Yoga powers, the three pursuits
ज्ञानम् च केवलम्-अनन्त
wisdom and of Truth, O Infinite Lord!
भवन्ति तुष्टात् त्वत्-त: नृणाम्
happen by Your gratification from You, to people
किमु सपत्न जय-आदि:-आशी:
what of, enemy conquering and such blessings
O Infinite Lord! From Your being gratified, the people are blessed with longest age, body as desired, unequalled wealth, possession of heaven, earth and the nether worlds, all the powers of Yoga, the three pursuits of human life, and even the wisdom of The Truth, what then of blessings such as conquering of the enemies.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
अदित्यैवं स्तुतो राजन्भगवान्-पुष्करेक्षण: ।
क्षेत्रज्ञ: सर्वभूतानामिति होवाच भारत ॥११॥
अदित्या-एवम् स्तुत: राजन्-
by Aditi thus extolled, O King!
भगवान्-पुष्कर-ईक्षण:
The Almighty lotus eyed
क्षेत्रज्ञ: सर्वभूतानाम्-
The Inner Controller of all created beings
इति ह-उवाच भारत
this indeed said, O Scion of Bhaarata!

श्री भगवान-उवाच -
The Lord said -
देवमातर्भवत्या मे विज्ञातं चिरकाङ्क्षितम् ।
यत् सपत्नैर्हृतश्रीणां च्यावितानां स्वधामत: ॥१२॥
देवमात:-भवत्या मे
O Mother of gods! your to Me
विज्ञातम् चिर-काङ्क्षितम्
is known the long desired
यत् सपत्नै:-हृत-श्रीणाम्
that by the enemies usurped wealth
च्यावितानाम् स्वधामत:
and expelled from own abode
O Mother of gods! Your long cherished desire is known to Me, which is in regard to your sons being deprived of their wealth and their being expelled from their abodes by their enemies.
तान्विनिर्जित्य समरे दुर्मदानसुरर्षभान् ।
प्रतिलब्धजयश्रीभि: पुत्रैरिच्छस्युपासितुम् ॥१३॥
तान्-विनिर्जित्य समरे
them defeating in the battle
दुर्मदान्-असुर-ऋषभान्
the proud demon chiefs
प्रतिलब्ध-जय-श्रीभि:
regaining glory and wealth
पुत्रै:-इच्छसि-उपासितुम्
with the sons want to live
Your desire is to live with your sons, who having defeated the arrogant Asura chiefs, in battle, have regained their wealth and glory.
इन्द्रज्येष्ठै: स्वतनयैर्हतानां युधि विद्विषाम् ।
स्त्रियो रुदन्तीरासाद्य द्रष्टुमिच्छसि दु:खिता: ॥१४॥
इन्द्र-ज्येष्ठै: स्व-तनयै:-
by Indra the eldest and others own sons
हतानाम् युधि विद्विषाम्
slain in the battle, the enemies
स्त्रिय: रुदन्ती:-आसाद्य
(their) wives weeping, coming
द्रष्टुम्-इच्छसि दु:खिता:
to see, want to, sorrowful
You want to come and see the sorrowful and weeping wives of the enemies slain in the battle, by your eldest son Indra and the other of your own sons.
आत्मजान्सुसमृद्धांस्त्वं प्रत्याहृतयश: श्रिय: ।
नाकपृष्ठमधिष्ठाय क्रीडतो द्रष्टुमिच्छसि ॥१५॥
आत्मजान्-सुसमृद्धान्-त्वम्
your sons well established, you,
प्रत्याहृत-यश: श्रिय:
having regained fame and fortune
नाक-पृष्ठम्-अधिष्ठाय
heaven over ruling
क्रीडत: द्रष्टुम्-इच्छसि
and revelling, to see want to
You want to see your sons well established, having regained their fame and fortune, and ruling over and revelling in heaven.
प्रायोऽधुना तेऽसुरयूथनाथा अपारणीया इति देवि मे मति: ।
यत्तेऽनुकूलेश्वरविप्रगुप्ता न विक्रमस्तत्र सुखं ददाति ॥१६॥
प्राय:-अधुना ते-असुर-यूथ-नाथा:
in general, at present, those Asura army generals
अपारणीया: इति देवि मे मति:
are invincible, this, O celestial lady! is My opinion
यत्-ते-अनुकूल-ईश्वर-विप्र-
because in their favour are Time, Braahmanas,
गुप्ता: न विक्रम:-तत्र
protection, not valour there
सुखम् ददाति
will happiness give
O Celestial lady! In general, at present, those generals of the Asura armies are invincible, because Time and the Braahmanas are in their favour, and they are protected by them. Heroic valour against them will not bring happiness.
अथाप्युपायो मम देवि चिन्त्य: सन्तोषितस्य व्रतचर्यया ते ।
ममार्चनं नार्हति गन्तुमन्यथा श्रद्धानुरूपं फलहेतुकत्वात् ॥१७॥
अथ-अपि-उपाय: मम
then, even, solution by Me
देवि चिन्त्य: सन्तोषितस्य
O Celestial lady! Has to be thought, gratified
व्रत-चर्यया ते
by vow carrying out of yours
मम-अर्चनम् न-अर्हति
My worship does not deserve
गन्तुम्-अन्यथा श्रद्धा-अनुरूपम्
to go otherwise reverence conduced
फल-हेतुकत्वात्
result orienting
O Celestial Lady! Even then, some solution must be thought out by Me who is propitiated by you by carrying out the sacred vow. My worship does not deserve to go in vain, as it is fruit oriented and in accordance to the reverence of the devotee.
त्वयार्चितश्चाहमपत्यगुप्तये पयोव्रतेनानुगुणं समीडित: ।
स्वांशेन पुत्रत्वमुपेत्य ते सुतान् गोप्तास्मि मारीचतपस्यधिष्ठित: ॥१८॥
त्वया-अर्चित: च-अहम्-
by you worshipped and I
अपत्य-गुप्तये पयोव्रतेन-
for the sons' protection, by the 'Payovrata'
अनुगुणम् समीडित:
as per rituals and singing of praises
स्व-अंशेन पुत्रत्वम्-उपेत्य
with My own part, son's role taking on,
ते सुतान् गोप्ता-अस्मि
your sons, protect will
मारीच-तपसि-अधिष्ठित:
in Kashyapa's procreative energy entering
And I, being worshipped by you, by the conducting of the 'Payovrata' vow, with proper rituals and the singing of praises, with My own part will enter the procreative energy of Kashyapa and play the part of a son, for your sons' protection.
उपधाव पतिं भद्रे प्रजापतिमकल्मषम् ।
मां च भावयती पत्यावेवंरूपमवस्थितम् ॥१९॥
उपधाव पतिम् भद्रे
serve your husband, O Blessed One!
प्रजापतिम्-अकल्मषम्
Kashyapa, sinless
माम् च भावयती पत्यौ-
Me and thinking of in your husband,
एवम् रूपम्-अवस्थितम्
in this form present
O Blessed One! Serve your husband the sinless Kashyapa, a creator of the beings, and think of Me present in this form in the person of your husband.
नैतत् परस्मा आख्येयं पृष्टयापि कथंचन ।
सर्वं सम्पद्यते देवि देवगुह्यं सुसंवृतम् ॥२०॥
न-एतत् परस्मै आख्येयम्
not this, to others should be told
पृष्टया-अपि कथंचन
if asked even, ever
सर्वम् सम्पद्यते देवि
all is successful, O Celestial Lady!
देव-गुह्यम् सुसंवृतम्
the gods' plans well guarded
O Celestial Lady! This should not be told to anybody, ever, even if questioned. The plans of the gods are successful only if well guarded.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एतावदुक्त्वा भगवांस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ।
अदितिर्दुर्लभं लब्ध्वा हरेर्जन्मात्मनि प्रभो: ॥२१॥
एतावत्-उक्त्वा भगवान्-
like this having said, The Almighty
तत्र-एव-अन्तरधीयत
there only disappeared
अदिति:-दुर्लभम् लब्ध्वा
Aditi, the rare acquiring,
हरे:-जन्म-आत्मनि प्रभो:
Shree Hari's birth in herself, The Lord
Having said so, The Almighty disappeared there and then. Aditi, acquired the rare boon of The Lord Shree Hari's birth in herself,…
उपाधावत् पतिं भक्त्या परया कृतकृत्यवत् ।
स वै समाधियोगेन कश्यपस्तदबुध्यत ॥२२॥
उपाधावत् पतिम् भक्त्या
served her husband with devotion
परया कृत-कृत्य-वत्
supreme, as if having accomplished her purpose
स: वै समाधि-योगेन
he certainly, by mental concentration applying
कश्यप:-तत्-अबुध्यत
Kashyapa that knew
Aditi served her husband with supreme devotion, as though she had fulfilled her purpose. He, Kashyapa, by applying mental concentration, actually perceived this.
प्रविष्टमात्मनि हरेरंशं ह्यवितथेक्षण: ।
सोऽदित्यां वीर्यमाधत्त तपसा चिरसम्भृतम् ।
समाहितमना राजन्दारुण्यग्निं यथानिल: ॥२३॥
प्रविष्टम्-आत्मनि हरे:-अंशम्
entered in himself, Lord Shree Hari's part
हि-अवितथ-ईक्षण:
indeed (he) of true insight
स:-अदित्याम् वीर्यम्-आधत्त
he in Aditi the seed placed
तपसा चिर-सम्भृतम्
by asceticism for long conserved
समाहित-मना राजन्-
with a concentrated mind, O King!
दारुणि-अग्निम् यथा-अनिल:
in the wood, the fire, like the wind
He, Kashyapa, of true insight, knowing that Lord Shree Hari's part had entered him, with a concentrated mind, placed his seed into Aditi, which he had conserved for long with asceticism, just like the wind places fire in the wood.
अदितेर्धिष्ठितं गर्भं भगवन्तं सनातनम् ।
हिरण्यगर्भो विज्ञाय समीडे गुह्यनामभि: ॥२४॥
अदिते:-अधिष्ठितम् गर्भम्
in Aditi's, has entered the womb
भगवन्तम् सनातनम्
The Lord Eternal
हिरण्यगर्भ: विज्ञाय
Brahmaa, coming to know,
समीडे गुह्य-नामभि:
praised by secret names
Brahmaa, coming to know that The Eternal Lord had entered the womb of Aditi, praised Him with mysterious names.
ब्रह्मा-उअवाच -
Brahma said -
जयोरुगाय भगवन्नुरुक्रम नमोस्तु ते ।
नमो ब्रह्मण्यदेवाय त्रिगुणाय नमो नम: ॥२५॥
जय-उरुगाय भगवन्-
salutations to the much extolled, The Lord
उरुक्रमे नम:-अस्तु ते
of great valour, Hail be to You
नम: ब्रह्मण्य-देवाय
Hail to The Braahmanas' loving God
त्रि-गुणाय नम: नम:
The Controller of the three Gunas, Hail! Hail!
Salutations to The much extolled, to The Lord of great valour, Hail be to You, Hail to The Braahmanas' loving God, to The Controller of the three Gunas, Hail! Hail!
नमस्ते पृश्निगर्भाय वेदगर्भाय वेधसे ।
त्रिनाभाय त्रिपृष्ठाय शिपिविष्टाय विष्णवे ॥२६॥
नमस्ते पृश्नि-गर्भाय
salutations to Prishni's womb laying in
वेद-गर्भाय वेधसे
by the Vedas well concealed, The Maker ( of all)
त्रि-नाभाय त्रि-पृष्ठाय
three worlds in navel, One, three worlds beyond
शिपि-विष्टाय विष्णवे
in the inside of the beings present, Lord Vishnu
Salutations to You, Who were in the womb of Prishnee, Who is concealed and revealed by The Vedas, The Maker of all, having the three worlds in the navel, The One Who is beyond the three worlds, The One present inside all beings, Lord Vishnu.
त्वमादिरन्तो भुवनस्य मध्यमनन्तशक्तिं पुरुषं यमाहु: ।
कालो भवानाक्षिपतीश विश्वं स्रोतो यथान्त: पतितं गभीरम् ॥२७॥
त्वम्-आदि:-अन्त: भुवनस्य
You are The beginning, The end, of the cosmos,
मध्यम्-अनन्त-शक्तिम्
the middle, of unbounded valour
पुरुषम् यम्-आहु:
Purusha Who is called
काल: भवान्-अक्षिपति-ईश
Time You are, Who draws O Lord!
विश्वम् स्रोत: यथा-
the world's stream, just as
अन्त: पतितम् गभीरम्
in it fallen deep
You, Who are called The Purusha, are the beginning, middle and end of the cosmos. You are of unbound valour. O Lord! You are Time, Who, like a deep stream, draws with it whatever has fallen into it.
त्वं वै प्रजानां स्थिरजङ्गमानां प्रजापतीनामसि सम्भविष्णु: ।
दिवौकसां देव दिवश्च्युतानां परायणं नौरिव मज्जतोऽप्सु ॥२८॥
त्वम् वै प्रजानाम्
You indeed of the created beings
स्थिर-जङ्गमानाम्
the immobile and mobile
प्रजापतीनाम्-असि
of the lords of creation, are
सम्भ-विष्णु:
The creator Vishnu
दिवौकसाम् देव
of the gods O Lord
दिव:-च्युतानाम्
from the heavens fallen
परायणम् नौ:-इव
the Support, boat like
मज्जत:-अप्सु
drowning in the water
Indeed, of all the immobile and mobile created beings, of the lords of the creation, are The Creator, Vishnu. Of the gods who have fallen from the heaven, You are The Only Support, like a boat for the one who is drowning in water.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां अष्टमस्कन्धे वामनप्रादुर्भावे सप्तदश: अध्याय: ॥१७॥
Thus ends the seventeenth discourse, hinging on the story of the descent of Lord Vaamana, in Book Eight of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
