श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
बलिरेवं गृहपति: कुलाचार्येण भाषित: ।

तूष्णीं भूत्वा क्षणं राजन्नुवाचावहितो गुरुम् ॥१॥


बलि:-एवम् गृहपति:
Bali, thus, the householder,
कुल-आचार्येण भाषित:
by the race's preceptor (Shukra), spoken
तूष्णीम् भूत्वा क्षणम् राजन्-
silence keeping for a moment, O King!
उवाच-अवहित: गुरुम्
said carefully, to the teacher

When, thus the householder Bali was spoken to by Shukra, the preceptor of the Asura race, he was silent for a moment and then carefully said to the teacher,…


बलि:-उवाच -
Bali said -
सत्यं भगवता प्रोक्तं धर्मोऽयं गृहमेधिनाम् ।

अर्थं कामं यशो वृत्तिं यो न बाधते कर्हिचित् ॥२॥


सत्यम् भगवता प्रोक्तम्
truly by your honourable self, is said,
धर्म:-अयम् गृहमेधिनाम्
the duty this (is) of the householder
अर्थम् कामम् यश: वृत्तिम्
wealth, enjoyment, fame and livelihood
य: न बाधते कर्हिचित्
who, (must) not hamper ever

It is truly said by your honourable self that it is the duty of the householder that nothing should ever hamper his wealth, enjoyment fame and livelihood.


स चाहं वित्तलोभेन प्रत्याचक्षे कथं द्विजम् ।

प्रतिश्रुत्य ददामीति प्राह्लादि: कितवो यथा ॥३॥


स: च-अह्म् वित्त-लोभेन
that and I, for the wealth greed
प्रत्याचक्षे कथम् द्विजम्
refuse how to the Braahmana
प्रतिश्रुत्य ददामि-इति
having promised 'will give' thus
प्राह्लादि: कितव: यथा
Prahlaada's grandson, cheat like

And that I, the grandson of Prahlaada, how can I refuse to the Braahmana, like a cheat, after having promised him that 'I will give', for the greed of wealth?


न ह्यसत्यात् परोऽधर्म इति होवाच भूरियम् ।

सर्वं सोढुमलं मन्ये ऋतेऽलीकपरं नरम् ॥४॥


न-हि-असत्यात् पर:-अधर्म:
not indeed untruth other than is more unrighteous
इति ह-उवाच भू:-इयम्
this, certainly said the earth this
सर्वम् सोढुम्-अलम् मन्ये
all to bear am capable, I consider,
ऋते-अलीक-परम् नरम्
except, falsehood given to, man

This earth has said, that, ' There is not greater unrighteousness other than untruthfulness.' Indeed, I am capable of bearing everything except a man given to falsehood.


नाहं बिभेमि निरयान्नाधन्यादसुखार्णवात् ।

न स्थानच्यवनान्मृत्योर्यथा विप्रप्रलम्भनात् ॥५॥


न-अहम् बिभेमि निरयात्-
not I am afraid of hell,
न-अधन्यात्-असुख-अर्णवात्
not of poverty, of sorrow an ocean
न स्थान-च्यवनात्-मृत्यो:-
not from position disposed, of death,
यथा विप्र-प्रलम्भनात्
as of Braahmana deceiving

I am not afraid of hell, of poverty, of an ocean of sorrow, of being disposed from my position or even of death, as of deceiving a Braahmana.


यद् यद्-हास्यति लोकेऽस्मिन्संपरेतं धनादिकम् ।

तस्य त्यागे निमित्तं किं विप्रस्तुष्येन्न तेन चेत् ॥६॥


यत् यत्-हास्यति लोके-अस्मिन्-
what all is left, in this world
संपरेतम् धन-आदिकम्
after death, wealth and others
तस्य त्यागे निमित्तम् किम्
by its giving up, purpose is what
विप्र:-तुष्येत्-न तेन चेत्
Braahmana is satisfied not by it, if

All that, such as, wealth and other things, which leave one after death, what is the purpose of giving up those things, if one is not able to satisfy a Braahmana by giving those to him?


श्रेय: कुर्वन्ति भूतानां साधवो दुस्त्यजासुभि: ।

दध्यङ्शिबिप्रभृतय: को विकल्पो धरादिषु ॥७॥


श्रेय: कुर्वन्ति भूतानाम्
benefits extend for the living beings,
साधव: दुस्त्यज-असुभि:
the noble, by difficult to part with, life also
दध्यङ्-शिबि-प्रभृतय:
(such as) Dadhichi and Shivi and others
क: विकल्प: धरा-आदिषु
what option (in the case) of land and other things

The noble men like sage Dadhichi and king Shibi extend benefits to the living beings even by giving up life which is difficult to part with. Then, where is the option in giving of land and other things?


यैरियं बुभुजे ब्रह्मन्दैत्येन्द्रैरनिवर्तिभि: ।

तेषां कालोऽग्रसील्लोकान् न यशोऽधिगतं भुवि ॥८॥


यै:-इयम् बुभुजे ब्रह्मन्-
by whom this was enjoyed, O Holy Braahmana!
दैत्य-इन्द्रै:-अनिवर्तिभि:
by the Daitya Lords, who did not retreat
तेषाम् काल:-अग्रसीत्-लोकान्
their Time, consumed the worlds
न यश:-अधिगतम् भुवि
not the fame earned on this land

O Holy Braahmana! Daitya Lords, who did not know retreat in the battle, their enjoyments as the rulers of these worlds, were consumed by Time. But the fame earned by them on this earth was not consumed.


सुलभा युधि विप्रर्षे ह्यनिवृत्तास्तनुत्यज: ।

न तथा तीर्थ आयाते श्रद्धया ये धनत्यज: ॥९॥


सुलभा: युधि विप्रर्षे
readily available are, in battle, O Braahmana sage!
हि-अनिवृत्ता: तनु-त्यज:
indeed not retreating, (their) bodies giving up
न तथा तीर्थ आयाते
not like that, worthy recipient having approached
श्रद्धया ये धन-त्यज:
with reverence who, will wealth give away

O Braahmana sage! People who do not retreat in battle and readily give up their lives are available, but not people who will give away their wealth with reverence even when a worthy recipient has approached.


मनस्विन: कारुणिकस्य शोभनं यदर्थिकामोपनयेन दुर्गति: ।

कुत: पुनर्ब्रह्मविदां भवादृशां ततो वटोरस्य ददामि वाञ्छितम् ॥१०॥


मनस्विन: कारुणिकस्य शोभनम्
of the thoughtful and the compassionate befits
यत्-अर्थिकाम-उपनयेन दुर्गति:
that for a petitioner's gratification (incurs) misery
कुत: पुन:-ब्रह्म-विदाम् भवादृशाम्
whence again, of Brahman knowers yourself like
तत: वटो:-अस्य ददामि वाञ्छितम्
therefore to Brahmchaari this will give the desired

It is befitting for the thoughtful and the compassionate that he incurs misery in gratifying the demand of the petitioner, more so of people like yourself, the knowers of Brahman. Therefore I will give this Brahmchaari what is desired by him.


यजन्ति यज्ञक्रतुभिर्यमादृता भवन्त आम्नायविधानकोविदा: ।

स एव विष्णुर्वरदोऽस्तु वा परो दास्याम्यमुष्मै क्षितिमीप्सितां मुने ॥११॥


यजन्ति यज्ञ-क्रतुभि:-
propitiate by sacrifices and by Kratus
यम्-आदृता: भवन्त:
Whom with reverence you all
आम्नाय-विधान-कोविदा:
by Vedic rituals, experts
स: एव विष्णु:-वरद:-अस्तु
He alone Vishnu, Bestower of boons, may be
वा पर: दास्यामि-अमुष्मै
or anyone else, will give to him
क्षितिम्-ईप्सिताम् मुने
land desire, O Sage!

O Sage! May He be The very same Vishnu, The Bestower of boons, Whom you all, the experts in Vedic ritual systems, propitiate by Yagyas and Kratus, or be it anyone else, I will give him the land desired by him.


यदप्यसावधर्मेण मां बध्नीयादनागसम् ।

तथाप्येनं न हिंसिष्ये भीतं ब्रह्मतनुं रिपुम् ॥१२॥


यदि-अपि-असौ-अधर्मेण
if even this, by unrighteousness
माम् बध्नीयात्-अनागसम्
me binds faultless
तथा-अपि-एनम् न हिंसिष्ये
then even him not will harm
भीतम् ब्रह्म-तनुम् रिपुम्
afraid (in) Braahmana form, (my) enemy

Even if this person by means of unrighteousness, binds me, the faultless as I am, I will not harm him, because, he is in the form of a Braahmana, is my foe, and is afraid of me.


एष वा उत्तमश्लोको न जिहासति यद् यश: ।

हत्वा मैनां हरेद् युद्धे शयीत निहतो मया ॥१३॥


एष: वा उत्तमश्लोक:
This or, (if is) The excellent renowned, Vishnu
न जिहासति यत् यश:
will not tarnish that fame
हत्वा मा-एनाम् हरेत्
by killing me, her (the earth) will take
युद्धे शयीत निहत: मया
in battle may lie, killed by me

If, This is The excellent renowned Lord Vishnu, He will not tarnish that fame. He will take this land after killing me, or if it is an imposter, he will lie killed by me in the battle.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवमश्रद्धितं शिष्यमनादेशकरं गुरु: ।

शशाप् दैवप्रहित: सत्यसन्धं मनस्विनम् ॥१४॥


एवम्-अश्रद्धितम् शिष्यम्-
in this manner, the disrespectful disciple,
अनादेशकरम् गुरु:
disobedient, the Preceptor (Shukraachaaryaa)
शशाप् दैव-प्रहित:
cursed by Providence impelled
सत्य-सन्धम् मनस्विनम्
the truth following, and the thoughtful

In this manner, The Preceptor, impelled by Providence cursed the truth following and thoughtful disciple who had disrespected and disobeyed him.


दृढं पण्डितमान्यज्ञ: स्तब्धोऽस्यस्मदुपेक्षया ।

मच्छासनातिगो यस्त्वमचिराद् भ्रश्यसे श्रिय: ॥१५॥


दृढम् पण्डितमानी-अज्ञ:
highly arrogant, stupid,
स्तब्ध:-असि-अस्मत्-उपेक्षया
conceited are, me disregarding
मत्-शासन-अतिग: य:-त्वम्-
my command violating, that you
अचिरात् भ्रश्यसे श्रिय:
soon, will loose all splendour

'You are highly arrogant, stupid and conceited, by disregarding me, and violating my commands, so you will soon loose all splendour.’


एवं शप्त: स्वगुरुणा सत्यान्न चलितो महान् ।

वामनाय ददावेनामर्चित्वोदकपूर्वकम् ॥१६॥


एवम् शप्त: स्व-गुरुणा
thus cursed by own Preceptor
सत्यात्-न चलित: महान्
from truth was not, dissuaded the Noble
वामनाय ददौ-एनाम्-
to the Brahmchaari gave that land,
अर्चित्वा-उदक-पूर्वकम्
worshipping with water first

Even though thus cursed by his own Preceptor, Shukraachaaryaa, he did not deviate from truth, and gave the promised land to the Brahmachari's, first solemnizing the gift with water.


विन्ध्यावलिस्तदाऽऽगत्य पत्नी जालकमालिनी ।

आनिन्ये कलशं हैममवनेजन्यमपां भृतम् ॥१७॥


विन्ध्यावलि:-तदा-आगत्य
Vindhyaavalee, then, having come,
पत्नी जालक-मालिनी
wife (of Bali), with pearl jewels adorned
आनिन्ये कलशम् हैमम्-
brought the pitcher golden
अवनेजन्यम्-अपाम् भृतम्
to wash the feet (of the Lord), with water full

Then, Bali's wife Vindhyaavalee, adorned with pearl jewels, came, and brought the golden pitcher full of water to wash the feet of The Lord.


यजमान: स्वयं तस्य श्रीमत् पादयुगं मुदा ।

अवनिज्यावहन्मूर्ध्नि तदपो विश्वपावनी: ॥१८॥


यजमान: स्वयम् तस्य
the sacrificer, (Bali) himself, His
श्रीमत् पाद-युगम् मुदा
the glorious feet pair with delight
अवनिज्-आवहत्-मूर्ध्नि
washed and raised to the head,
तत्-अप: विश्व-पावनी:
that water, world consecrating

The sacrificer, Bali himself, with delight washed the pair of glorious feet, and raised that water to his head, which was capable of consecrating the whole world.


तदासुरेन्द्रं दिवि देवतागणा: गन्धर्वविद्याधरसिद्धचारणा: ।

तत्कर्म सर्वेऽपि गृणन्त आर्जवं प्रसूनवर्षैर्ववृषुर्मुदान्विता: ॥१९॥


तदा-असुरेन्द्रम् दिवि
then, the Asura chief's, in the heaven
देवता-गणा: गन्धर्व-
the gods hosts, the Gandharvas,
विद्याधर-सिद्ध-चारणा:
Vidyaadharaas, Siddhas and Chaaranas
तत्-कर्म सर्वे-अपि गृणन्त
that action all even praised
आर्जवम् प्रसून-वर्षै:-
his simplicity, by flowers showers
ववृषु:-मुदा-अन्विता:
raining with delight full

Then, the host of gods in the heaven, the Gandharvas, the Vidyaadharaas, the Siddhas and the Chaaranas, all, even though he was an enemy, praised his action and simplicity, and full of delight rained showers of flowers.


नेदुर्मुहुर्दुन्दुभय: सहस्रशो गन्धर्वकिंपूरुषकिन्नरा जगु: ।

नेदुर्मुहुर्दुन्दुभय: सहस्रशो गन्धर्वकिंपूरुषकिन्नरा जगु: ।

मनस्विनानेन कृतं सुदुष्करं विद्वानदाद् यद् रिपवे जगत्त्रयम् ॥२०॥


नेदु:-मुहु:-दुन्दुभय: सहस्रश:
sounded again and again, kettledrums in thousands
गन्धर्व-किंपूरुष-किन्नरा: जगु:
Gandharvas Kimpurushas Kinnaras sang
मनस्विना-अनेन कृतम् सुदुष्करम्
by generous this, is done a very difficult task
विद्वान्-अदात् यत् रिपवे जगत्-त्रयम्
knowing gave, in that, to the enemy, worlds three

Thousands of kettledrums were sounded again and again. The Gandharvas, Kimpurushas, Kinnaras sang, 'A very difficult task has been done by this generous soul, in that, in spite of knowing, he has given away the three worlds to the enemy.'


तद् वामनं रूपमवर्धताद्भुतं हरेरनन्तस्य गुणत्रयात्मकम् ।

भू: खं दिशो द्यौर्विवरा: पयोधयस्तिर्यङ्नृदेवा ऋषयो यदासत ॥२१॥


तत् वामनम् रूपम्-अवर्धत-
that Dwarf form, grew
अद्भुतम् हरे:-अनन्तस्य
wonderful, of Lord Shree Hari Infinite
गुणत्रय-आत्मकम्
of Gunas three comprising
भू: खम् दिश: द्यौ:-
the earth, the sky, the four quarters, heavens,
विवरा: पयोधय:-तिर्यङ्-
the subterranean regions, oceans, birds, animals,
नृ-देवा: ऋषय: यत्-आसत्
human beings, gods, sages, in which included

That wonderful Dwarf form of The Infinite Lord Shree Hari, comprising of the three Gunas, grew to such an extent that, the earth, the sky, the four quarters, the heavens, the subterranean regions, the oceans, birds and animals, the human beings, the gods, and sages were all encompassed in it.


काये बलिस्तस्य महाविभूते: सहर्त्विगाचार्यसदस्य एतत् ।

ददर्श विश्वं त्रिगुणं गुणात्मके भूतेन्द्रियार्थाशयजीवयुक्तम् ॥२२॥


काये बलि:-तस्य महा-विभूते:
in the body, Bali, His, of extraordinary powers
सह-ऋत्विक्-आचार्य सदस्य एतत्
with the presiding priests, preceptors, of members this
ददर्श विश्वम् त्रिगुणम्
saw the world, the three Gunas
गुण-आत्मके भूत-
in the three Gunas' ground, the (five) elements,
इन्द्रिय-अर्थ-
the (ten) Indriyas, the objects
आशय-जीव-युक्तम्
the mind and the embodied soul, inclusive

Bali, along with the presiding priests, preceptors, and members, saw in the body of The Lord of extraordinary powers, the Ground of the three Gunas, the three Gunas, the (five) elements, the (ten) Indriyas, the objects of the senses, including the mind and the embodied soul.


रसामचष्टाङ्घ्रितलेऽथ पादयोर्महीं महीध्रान्पुरुषस्य जङ्घयो: ।

पतत्त्रिणो जानुनि विश्वमूर्तेरूर्वोर्गणं मारुतमिन्द्रसेन: ॥२३॥


रसाम्-अचष्ट-अङ्घ्रि-तले-
the subterranean regions, saw, in the soles' below,
अथ पादयो:-महीम् महीध्रान्-
then, in the feet, the earth, the mountains
पुरुषस्य जङ्घयो:
of The Supreme Person's shanks
पतत्त्रिण: जानुनि
the birds (atmosphere) in the knees,
विश्वमूर्ते:-ऊर्वो:-
in the Lord's cosmic form's thighs
गणम् मारुतम्-इन्द्रसेन:
the hosts of air gods, Bali

Then, Bali saw the subterranean regions, below the soles of The Supreme Person, the earth in the feet, the mountains in the shanks, the birds (atmosphere) in the knees, and the hosts of the gods of air in the thighs of The Lord's cosmic form.


संध्यां विभोर्वाससि गुह्य ऐक्षत् प्रजापतीञ्जघने आत्ममुख्यान् ।

नाभ्यां नभ: कुक्षिषु सप्तसिन्धूनुरुक्रमस्योरसि चर्क्षमालाम् ॥२४॥


संध्याम् विभो:-वाससि
the twilight in The All Mighty's loin cloth,
गुह्य ऐक्षत प्रजापतीन्-
in the anus, saw the Prajaapatis,
जघने आत्म-मुख्यान्
in the buttocks, self and the leaders (of Asuras)
नाभ्याम् नभ: कुक्षिषु
in the navel the firmament, in the belly
सप्त-सिन्धून्-उरुक्रमस्य-
the seven oceans, of The Lord of big strides
उरसि च-ऋक्ष-मालाम्
on the chest and the stars congregation

In the lion cloth of The Almighty Lord, he saw the twilight, in the anus, the Prajaapatis, in the buttocks, he saw himself and the leaders of the Asuras, in the navel the firmament, in the belly the seven oceans, and in the chest of The Lord of big strides, the congregation of stars.


हृद्यङ्ग धर्मं स्तनयोर्मुरारेर्ऋतं च सत्यं च मनस्यथेन्दुम् ।

श्रियं च वक्षस्यरविन्दहस्तां कण्ठे च सामानि समस्तरेफान् ॥२५॥


हृदि-अङ्ग धर्मम्
in the heart, O Dear (Pareekshit), Dharma
स्तनयो:-मुरारे:-ऋतम् च
in breasts of The Slayer of Mura, sweet speech and
सत्यम् च मनसि-अथ-इन्दुम्
truthfulness, and in the mind, then, the moon,
श्रियम् च वक्षसि-
Goddess Laxmi and in the bosom
अरविन्द-हस्ताम्
with lotus in hand
कण्ठे च सामानि समस्त-रेफान्
in the throat and the Saama Vedas, (and) all sounds

O Dear Pareekshit! Bali saw Dharma in the heart of The Slayer of Mura, Vishnu, in His breasts, sweet speech and truthfulness, then, moon in His mind, Goddess Laxmi with a lotus in hand in His bosom, and all the Saama Vedas and all the sounds in His throat.


इन्द्रप्रधानानमरान्भुजेषु तत्कर्णयो: ककुभो द्यौश्च मूर्ध्नि ।

केशेषु मेघाञ्छ्वसनं नासिकायामक्ष्णोश्च सूर्यं वदने च वह्निम् ॥२६॥


इन्द्र-प्रधानान्-अमरान्-भुजेषु
Indra and the leading immortals in arms
तत्-कर्णयो: ककुभ:
in His ears the quarters,
द्यौ:-च मूर्ध्नि
heaven in crown,
केशेषु मेघान्-
in hair the clouds
श्वसनम् नासिकायाम्-
air in nostrils
अक्ष्णो:-च सूर्यम्
in eyes and the Sun
वदने च वह्निम्
in mouth and the fire

He saw, Indra and the leading immortals in His arms, the quarters in His ears, the heaven in His crown, the clouds in His hair, air in His nostrils, the Sun in His eyes and the fire in His mouth.


वाण्यां च छन्दांसि रसे जलेशं भ्रुवोर्निषेधं च विधिं च पक्ष्मसु ।

अहश्च रात्रिं च परस्य पुंसो मन्युं ललाटेऽधर एव लोभम् ॥२७॥


वाण्याम् च छन्दांसि
in His speech and the Vedas,
रसे जलेशम्
in His palate Varuna
भ्रुवो:-निषेधम् च
in His eyebrows, prohibition and
विधिम् च पक्ष्मसु
command, and in His eyelashes
अह:-च रात्रिम् च परस्य पुंस:
day and night and of The Supreme Person
मन्युम् ललाटे-
anger in His forehead,
अधर एव लोभम्
in His lips alone greed

In the speech of The Supreme Person the Vedas, in His palate Varuna, in His eyebrows, prohibition and command, and in His eyelashes day and night and anger in His forehead, in His lips alone greed.


स्पर्शे च कामं नृप रेतसोऽम्भ: पृष्ठे त्वधर्मं क्रमणेषु यज्ञम् ।

छायासु मृत्युं हसिते च मायां तनूरुहेष्वोषधिजातयश्च ॥२८॥


स्पर्शे च कामम्
in touch and Love
नृप रेतस:-अम्भ:
O King! In generative fluid water
पृष्ठे तु-अधर्मम्
in His back indeed unrighteousness
क्रमणेषु यज्ञम्
in (His) strides sacrifice
छायासु मृत्युम्
in (His) shadow Death
हसिते च मायाम्
in (His) laughter and Maayaa
तनू-रुहेषु-ओषधि-जातय:-च
in the bodily hair, the herbs species and

O King! And Bali saw in His touch Love, in His generative fluid Water, in His back indeed Unrighteousness, in His strides Sacrifice, in His shadow Death, in His laughter Maayaa, and in His bodily hair, the species of herbs.


नदीश्च नाडीषु शिला नखेषु बुद्धावजं देवगणानृषींश्च ।

प्राणेषु गात्रे स्थिरजङ्गमानि सर्वाणि भूतानि ददर्श वीर: ॥२९॥


नदी:-च नाडीषु
rivers in His arteries,
शिला नखेषु
rocks in His nails,
बुद्धौ-अजम्
in His intellect Brahmaa,
देव-गणान्-ऋषीन्-च
the gods' hosts, the Rishis and
प्राणेषु गात्रे स्थिर-जङ्गमानि
in His Indriyas and in His Body, immobile and mobile
सर्वाणि भूतानि ददर्श वीर:
all beings saw the hero

The hero Bali saw rivers in His arteries, rocks in His nails, Brahmaa in His intellect, the hosts of gods and the Rishis in His Indriyas, the immobile and mobile, all beings in His Body.


सर्वात्मनीदं भुवनं निरीक्ष्य सर्वेऽसुरा: कश्मलमापुरङ्ग।

सुदर्शनं चक्रमसह्यतेजो धनुश्च शार्ङ्ग स्तनयित्नुघोषम् ॥३०॥


सर्व-आत्मनि-इदम् भुवनम्
in The all-encompassing Soul, this universe
निरीक्ष्य सर्वे-असुरा:
observing, all the Asuras
कश्मलम्-आपु:-अङ्ग
with fear were seized, O Dear One!
सुदर्शनम् चक्रम्-असह्य-तेज:
the Sudarshana discus, of unbearable lustre
धनु:-च शार्ङ्ग-
bow and Shaaranga
स्तनयित्नु-घोषम्
with thunder-like roaring sound

O Dear One! All the Asuras were seized with fear as they observed this universe in the all encompassing Soul of The Lord. The Sudershana discus with its unbearable lustre, and the bow, Shaaranga with its thunder like roaring sound,...


पर्जन्यघोषो जलज: पाञ्चजन्य: कौमोदकी विष्णुगदा तरस्विनी ।

विद्याधरोऽसि: शतचन्द्रयुक्तस्तूणोत्तमावक्षयसायकौ च ॥३१॥


पर्जन्य-घोष: जलज: पाञ्चजन्य:
of clouds roar, conch Paanchajanya,
कौमोदकी विष्णु-गदा
Kaumodaki Vishnu's mace
तरस्विनी
the swift

मधुव्रतस्रग्वनमालया वृतो रराज राजन्भगवानुरुक्रम: ।

क्षितिं पदैकेन बलेर्विचक्रमे नभ: शरीरेण दिशश्च बाहुभि: ॥३३॥


मधुव्रत-स्रक्-

वन-मालया वृत:
sylvan flowers' garland, decked with
रराज राजन्-
shone, O King!
भगवान्-उरु-क्रम:
The Lord of big strides
क्षितिम् पद-एकेन
the earth by stride one
बले:-विचक्रमे
of Bali covered
नभ: शरीरेण
the sky with the trunk
दिश:-च बाहुभि:
the quarters and with the arms

O King! The Lord of big strides shone brightly decked with garlands of sylvan flowers with black bees hovering on it. He covered the earth of Bali with one stride, the sky with His trunk and the quarters with His arms.


पदं द्वितीयं क्रमतस्त्रिविष्टपं न वै तृतीयाय तदीयमण्वपि ।

उरुक्रमस्याङ्घ्रिरुपर्युपर्यथो महर्जनाभ्यां तपस: परं गत: ॥३४॥


पदम् द्वितीयम्
the stride second
क्रमत:-त्रिविष्टपम्
covering the heaven
न वै तृतीयाय
not indeed for the third
तदीयम्-अण्वपि
his (Bali's) an atom also
उरुक्रमस्य-अङ्घ्रि:-
of The big Stride Ones' foot
उपरि-उपरि-अथ:
above and above then
महर्जनाभ्याम्
Mahar-loka and Jana-loka
तपस: परम् गत:
to Tapa-loka beyond went

The second stride which covered the heaven, indeed for the third, not an atom of Bali's space was available. The Big Stride Lord's, then, went above and above, beyond the Mahar-loka, the Jana-loka, and the Tapa-loka.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां अष्टमे स्कन्धे विश्वरूपदर्शनं नाम विंश: अध्याय: ॥२०॥


Thus ends the twentieth discourse entitled 'A vision of the Cosmic Form (of The Lord)', in Book Eight of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
