Shree Shuka said -
सत्यं समीक्ष्याब्जभवो नखेन्दुभिर्हतस्वधामद्युतिरावृतोऽभ्यगात् ।
मरीचिमिश्रा ऋषयो बृहद्व्रता: सनन्दनाद्या नरदेव योगिन: ॥१॥
सत्यम् समीक्ष्य-
(to) Satya-loka, observing (having reached)
अब्जभव: नख-इन्दुभि:-
the Lotus-born, Brahmaa, by the nails' moon
हत-स्वधाम-
marred own abode
द्युति:-आवृत:-अभ्यगात्
by the lustre covered sank,
मरीचि-मिश्रा: ऋषय:
Marichi and other sages,
बृहद्व्रता: सनन्दन-आद्या:
life long celibates, Sananda and others
नरदेव योगिन:
O god among men! The yogis
O god among men! Pareekshit! The lotus-born Brahmaa observed the foot of The Lord having reached Satya-loka, by its nails' moon like lustre, it marred his abode and he sank covered by it. He, Marichi and others, the sages, the life long celibates, the Yogis and Sananda and others,….
वेदोपवेदा नियमान्विता यमास्तर्केतिहासाङ्गपुराणसंहिता: ।
ये चापरे योगसमीरदीपितज्ञानाग्निना रन्धितकर्मकल्मषा: ।
ववन्दिरे यत्स्मरणानुभावत: स्वायम्भुवं धाम गता अकर्मकम् ॥२॥
वेद-उपवेदा: नियम-अन्विता:
the Vedas, Upavedas, Neeyamas consisting of,
यमा:-तर्क-इतिहास-अङ्ग-
Yama's, Tarkas, Itihaasas, Angas,
पुराण-संहिता:
Puraanas, Samhitaa,
ये च-अपरे योग-समीर-दीपित-
those and others, by Yoga's breeze enlightened
ज्ञान-अग्निना रन्धित-कर्म-कल्मषा:
wisdom fire (who have) burnt Karma's sins
ववन्दिरे यत्-
bowed (at the foot) that which
स्मरणा-अनुभावत:
by remembering's effect
स्वायम्भुवम् धाम गता:
to Brahmaa's realm had gone
अकर्मकम्
non-rituals (reached by)
The Vedas, the Upavedas, consisting of Neeyamas, Yaamas, Tarkas, Itihaasas, Angas, Puraanas, Samhitaa, and those others, who by the breeze of yoga had enlightened the fire of wisdom and had burnt their Karma's sins in it, bowed down to that foot, by the effect of remembering which, one reaches the realm of Brahmaa, which is unreachable by rituals.
अथाङ्घ्रये प्रोन्नमिताय विष्णोरुपाहरत् पद्मभवोऽर्हणोदकम् ।
समर्च्य भक्त्याभ्यगृणाच्छुचिश्रवा यन्नाभिपङ्केरुहसंभव: स्वयम् ॥३॥
अथ-अङ्घ्रये प्रोन्नमिताय
then, to the foot upraised
विष्णो:-उपाहरत्
of Vishnu, offered
पद्मभव:-अर्हण-उदकम्
the lotus-born, Brahmaa, to worship water
समर्च्य भक्त्या-अभ्यगृणात्-
having worshipped with devotion, extolled,
शुचि-श्रवा यत्-नाभि-पङ्केरुह
he, of untarnished fame, from Whose navel lotus
संभव: स्वयम्
was born himself
Then the lotus born Brahmaa offered water to worship the upraised foot of Vishnu. He, of untarnished fame, having worshipped with devotion, extolled Him, from Whose navel lotus he himself was born.
धातु: कमण्डलुजलं तदुरुक्रमस्य पादावनेजनपवित्रतया नरेन्द्र ।
स्वर्धुन्यभून्नभसि सा पतती निमार्ष्टि लोकत्रयं भगवतो विशदेव कीर्ति: ॥४॥

Brahma's water pot water
तत्-उरुक्रमस्य पाद-
That Lord of big strides, (Vishnu's) feet
अवनेजन पवित्रतया नरेन्द्र
by washing, by its purity, O King of men!
स्वर्धुनि-अभूत्-नभसि
Ganga became in the heavens
सा पतती निमार्ष्टि लोकत्रयम्
she as falls purifies, the worlds three
भगवत: विशदेव कीर्ति:
of the Lord's untarnished alone fame
O King of men! That water poured from Brahma's pot, to wash the foot of the Lord of big strides, Vishnu, by its purity became the holy Ganga, which as she falls from the heavens purifies the three worlds as she courses through them, just as the untarnished fame alone of Vishnu does.
ब्रह्मादयो लोकनाथा: स्वनाथाय समादृता: ।
सानुगा बलिमाजह्रु: संक्षिप्तात्मविभूतये ॥५॥
ब्रह्मा-आदय: लोकनाथा:
Brahmaa and others, guardians of the worlds
स्व-नाथाय समादृता:
for their own Master, with great respect
सानुगा: बलिम्-आजह्रु:
along with their attendents, offerings brought
संक्षिप्त-आत्म-विभूतये
for contracted Self form
Brahmaa and the other guardians of the worlds, along with their attendents, with great respect, brought offerings for their own Master, Who had contracted the form of His Own Self.
तोयै: समर्हणै: स्रग्भिर्दिव्यगन्धानुलेपनै: ।
धूपैर्दीपै: सुरभिभिर्लाजाक्षतफलाङ्कुरै: ॥६॥
तोयै: समर्हणै: स्रग्भि:-
with waters to wash garlands,
दिव्य-गन्ध-अनुलेपनै:
divine fragrances, pastes
धूपै:-दीपै: सुरभिभि:-
incenses, lights,
लाजा-अक्षत-फल-अङ्कुरै:
parched grains, unbroken rice, fruits, sprouts
With waters to wash and bathe and rinse, divine garlands, fragrant pastes, incenses, lights, ethereal perfumes, parched grains, unbroken rice, fruits and sprouts,….
स्तवनैर्जयशब्दैश्च तद्वीर्यमहिमाङ्कितै: ।
नृत्यवादित्रगीतैश्च शङ्खदुन्दुभिनि:स्वनै: ॥७॥
स्तवनै:-जय-शब्दै:-च
songs of praises, victory shouts and
तत्-वीर्य-महिमा-अङ्कितै:
His power and glory denoting
नृत्य-वादित्र-गीतै:-च
dances, instrumental music, songs and
शङ्ख-दुन्दुभि-नि:स्वनै:
conch, trumpets sounding
With singing of songs of praises, shouts of victory denoting His power and glory, dances, instrumental music, songs and sounding of conchs and trumpets.
जाम्बवानृक्षराजस्तु भेरीशब्दैर्मनोजव: ।
विजयं दिक्षु सर्वासु महोत्सवमघोषयत् ॥८॥
जाम्बवान्-ऋक्ष-राज:-तु
Jaambavaana, the bears' king, indeed
भेरी-शब्दै: मनोजव:
with drum sounds, as thought swift
विजयम् दिक्षु: सर्वासु
triumph in quarters all
महोत्सवम्-अघोषयत्
festivities declared
The king of the bears, Jaambavaana, with a speed swift as thought, along with the sound of the drums, declared in all the directions, the triumph of The Lord and also festivities.
महीं सर्वां हृतां दृष्ट्वा त्रिपदव्याजयाच्ञया ।
ऊचु: स्वभर्तुरसुरा दीक्षितस्यात्यमर्षिता: ॥९॥
महीम् सर्वाम् हृताम् दृष्ट्वा
the earth all taken away seeing
त्रि-पद-व्याज-याच्ञया
by three paces deceitful prayer
ऊचु: स्व-भर्तु:-असुरा:
said to own master (Bali), the Asuras,
दीक्षितस्य-अति-अमर्षिता:
who had solemn undertaking, very enraged
The Asuras, seeing the whole earth taken away, by way of a deceitful prayer, were very much enraged, and said to their own master, who had undertaken a solemn vow to perform the sacrifice.
न वा अयं ब्रह्मबन्धुर्विष्णुर्मायाविनां वर: ।
द्विजरूपप्रतिच्छन्नो देवकार्यं चिकीर्षति ॥१०॥
न वा अयम् ब्रह्मबन्धु:-
not or this is a Braahmana person,,
विष्णु:-मायाविनाम् वर:
Vishnu, of the conjurers foremost
द्विज-रूप-प्रतिच्छन्न:
Braahmana's form disguised in
देव-कार्यम् चिकीर्षति
the gods' purpose wants to accomplish
Or, this is not a Braahmana person. This is Vishnu, the foremost of the conjurers, Who, disguised in the form of a Braahmana, wants to accomplish the purpose of the gods.
अनेन याचमानेन शत्रुणा वटुरूपिणा ।
सर्वस्वं नो हृतं भर्तुर्न्यस्तदण्डस्य बर्हिषि ॥११॥
अनेन याचमानेन
by this begging
शत्रुणा वटु-रूपिणा
enemy in Brahmchaari form
सर्वस्वम् न: हृतम् भर्तु:-
everything of our snatched master's
न्यस्त-दण्डस्य बर्हिषि
refraining from violence, in the sacrifice
By this enemy, begging in the form of a Brahmchaari, everything of our master's has been wrenched, who is refraining from violence, under the oath of the sacrifice.
सत्यव्रतस्य सततं दीक्षितस्य विशेषत: ।
नानृतं भाषितुं शक्यं ब्रह्मण्यस्य दयावत: ॥१२॥
सत्य-व्रतस्य सततम्
to truthfulness vowed, always,
दीक्षितस्य विशेषत:
consecrated particularly,
न-अनृतम् भाषितुम् शक्यम्
not false to speak is capable
ब्रह्मण्यस्य दयावत:
to the Braahmanas, compassionate
He is vowed to truthfulness for ever, and is particularly consecrated for the sacrifice, and so is incapable of speaking false, as he is also compassionate towards the Braahmanas.
तस्मादस्य वधो धर्मो भर्तु: शुश्रूषणं च न: ।
इत्यायुधानि जगृहुर्बलेरनुचरासुरा: ॥१३॥
तस्मात्-अस्य वध: धर्म:
that is why, his killing is righteous
भर्तु: शुश्रूषणम् च न:
master's service, and ours
इति-आयुधानि जगृहु:-
thus weapons took on
बले:-अनुचर-असुरा:
Bali's followers the Asuras
That is why, killing Him is sacred and a service to our master. Thus saying the followers of Bali, the Asuras took on the weapons.
ते सर्वे वामनं हन्तुं शूलपट्टिशपाणय: ।
अनिच्छतो बले राजन् प्राद्रवञ्जातमन्यव: ॥१४॥
ते सर्वे वामनम् हन्तुम्
they all, the Dwarf to kill
शूल-पट्टिश-पाणय:
trident, spear in hand
अनिच्छत: बले: राजन्
unwilling as Bali was, O King!
प्राद्रवत्-जात-मन्यव:
ran forward with aroused anger
All of them, with aroused anger, ran with tridents and spears in hand, to kill the divine Dwarf, O King! Even though Bali did not desire it.
तानभिद्रवतो दृष्ट्वा दितिजानीकपान् नृप ।
प्रहस्यानुचरा विष्णो: प्रत्यषेधन्नुदायुधा: ॥१५॥
तान्-अभिद्रवत: दृष्ट्वा
them charging seeing
दितिज-अनीकपान् नृप
the Asura generals, O King!
प्रहस्य-अनुचरा: विष्णो:
laughingly, the attendents of Vishnu
प्रत्यषेधत्-उदायुधा:
stopped them with raised weapons
O King! The attendents of Vishnu, saw the generals of the Asura army charging. They then laughingly stopped them with upraised weapons.
नन्द: सुनन्दोऽथ जयो विजय: प्रबलो बल: ।
कुमुद: कुमुदाक्षश्च विष्वक्सेन: पतत्त्रिराट् ॥१६॥
नन्द: सुनन्द:-अथ
Nanda Sunanda then,
जय: विजय: प्रबल: बल:
Jaya, Vijaya, Prabala, Bala,
कुमुद: कुमुदाक्ष:-च
Kumuda, Kumudaaksha,
विष्वक्सेन: पतत्त्रिराट्
Vishvakasena, Garuda
Then, Nanda, Sunanda, Jaya,Vijaya, Prabala, Bala, Kumuda, Kumudaaksha, Vishvakasena, Garuda,….
जयन्त: श्रुतदेवश्च पुष्पदन्तोऽथ सात्वत: ।
सर्वे नागायुतप्राणाश्चमूं ते जघ्नुरासुरीम् ॥१७॥
जयन्त: श्रुतदेव:-च
Jayanta, Shrutadeva and
पुष्पदन्त:-अथ सात्वत:
Pushpadant, then, Saatvata
सर्वे नाग-अयुत-प्राणा:-
all elephants ten thousand strength (having)
चमूम् ते जघ्नु:-आसुरीम्
the army they exterminated of the Asuras
Then, Jayanta and Shrutadeva, Pushpadant, Saatvata, they all having the strength of ten thousand elephants, exterminated the army of the Asuras.
हन्यमानान् स्वकान् दृष्ट्वा पुरुषानुचरैर्बलि: ।
वारयामास संरब्धान् काव्यशापमनुस्मरन् ॥१८॥
हन्यमानान् स्वकान् दृष्ट्वा
being killed his own (people), seeing
पुरुष-अनुचरै:-बलि:
by The Supreme Person's attendents, Bali
वारयामास संरब्धान्
stopped them fighting
काव्य-शापम्-अनुस्मरन्
Shukraachaarya's curse remembering
When Bali saw that his own people were being killed by the attendents of The Supreme Person, he stopped them, also because he remembered the curse of Shukraachaaryaa.
हे विप्रचित्ते हे राहो हे नेमे श्रुयतां वच: ।
मा युध्यत निवर्तध्वं न न: कालोऽयमर्थकृत् ॥१९॥
हे विप्रचित्ते हे राहो
O Viprachitti! O Raahu!
हे नेमे श्रुयताम् वच:
O Nemi! listen to my word
मा युध्यत निवर्तध्वम्
do not fight, retreat
न न: काल:-अयम्-अर्थ-कृत्
not our time this, purpose attaining
O Viprachitti! O Raahu! O Nemi! listen to my word, do not fight, retreat, this time is not for fulfilling our purpose.
य: प्रभु: सर्वभूतानां सुखदु:खोपपत्तये ।
तं नातिवर्तितुं दैत्या: पौरुषेरीश्वर: पुमान् ॥२०॥
य: प्रभु: सर्व-भूतानाम्
That Lord, of all the living beings
सुख-दु:ख-उपपत्तये
joy and sorrow to bring
तम् न-अतिवर्तितुम्
Him not prevail upon
दैत्या: पौरुष-ईश्वर: पुमान्
O Daityas! by power or lordship, a man
O Daityas! the lord who brings joy and sorrow to all living beings, no man can prevail upon Him, by power or lordship.
यो नो भवाय प्रागासीदभवाय दिवौकसाम् ।
स एव भगवानद्य वर्तते तद्विपर्ययम् ॥२१॥
य: न: भवाय प्राक्-आसीत्-
Who, our for growth, formerly was
अभवाय दिवौकसाम्
decline for the divinities
स: एव भगवान्-अद्य
That same Lord, today,
वर्तते तत्-विपर्ययम्
behaves, in its opposite
That same Lord, Who, formerly was for our growth and for the decline of the divinities, is behaving in just the opposite manner.
बलेन सचिवैर्बुद्ध्या दुर्गैर्मन्त्रौषधादिभि: ।
सामादिभिरुपायैश्च कालं नात्येति वै जन: ॥२२॥
बलेन सचिवै:-बुद्ध्या
by strength, by counsellors, by wisdom,
दुर्गै:-मन्त्र-औषध-आदिभि:
fortifications, Mantras, medicines and others
सामादिभि:-उपायै:-च
by conciliation, other means and
कालम् न-अत्येति-वै-जन:
the Time cannot supersede, indeed man
Time cannot supersede, a man, by applying strength, counsellors, wisdom, fortifications, Mantras, medicines, conciliation and by other means.
भवद्भिर्निर्जिता ह्येते बहुशोऽनुचरा हरे: ।
दैवेनर्द्धैस्त एवाद्य युधि जित्वा नदन्ति न: ॥२३॥
भवद्भि:-निर्जिता: हि-एते
by you all won, indeed, these
बहुश:-अनुचरा: हरे:
many times, attendents of Shree Hari
दैवेन-ऋद्धै:-ते एव-अद्य
by providence nurtured, they alone today
युधि जित्वा नदन्ति न:
in the battle, winning roaring, us
Indeed, these are the very attendents of Shree Hari, whom you all have won over several times. They alone, nurtured by Providence, are roaring today, by winning us in the battle.
एतान् वयं विजेष्यामो यदि दैवं प्रसीदति ।
तस्मात् कालं प्रतीक्षध्वं यो नोऽर्थत्वाय कल्पते ॥२४॥
एतान् वयम् विजेष्याम:
them, we will conquer
यदि दैवम् प्रसीदति
if fate is favourable
तस्मात् कालम् प्रतीक्षध्वम्
therefore Time await
य: न:-अर्थत्वाय कल्पते
which for our interest is conducive
We will conquer them, if fate is favourable. Therefore, await the Time which will be conducive to our interest.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
पत्युर्निगदितं श्रुत्वा दैत्यदानवयूथपा: ।
रसां निविविशू राजन् विष्णुपार्षदताडिता: ॥२५॥
पत्यु:-निगदितम् श्रुत्वा
master's speech having heard
दैत्य-दानव-यूथपा:
the Daitya Daanava generals
रसाम् निविविशु: राजन्
to the nether worlds retired, O King!
विष्णु-पार्षद-ताडिता:
by Vishnu's attendents beaten
O King! On hearing these words of their master, Bali, the generals of the Daityas and the Daanavas retired to the nether worlds, beaten by the attendents of Vishnu.
अथ तार्क्ष्यसुतो ज्ञात्वा विराट् प्रभुचिकीर्षतम् ।
बबन्ध वारुणै: पाशै:र्बलिं सौत्येऽहनि क्रतौ ॥२६॥
अथ तार्क्ष्य-सुत: ज्ञात्वा
then, Taarkshy's son, Garuda, knowing
विराट् प्रभु चिकीर्षतम्
The Mighty Master's intention
बबन्ध वारुणै: पाशै: बलिम्
tied by Varuna's ropes, Bali
सौत्ये-अहनि क्रतौ
on Soma (extraction) day during the sacrifice
Then, Garuda, the son of Taarkshya, knowing the intention of his Mighty Master, tied Bali with the ropes of Varuna, on the day of the sacrifice when the Soma juice was to be extracted.
हाहाकारो महानासीद् रोदस्यो: सर्वतोदिशम् ।
गृह्यमाणेऽसुरपतौ विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना ॥२७॥
हाहाकार: महान्-आसीद्
hue and cry great was there
रोदस्यो: सर्वत:-दिशम्
in earth and heaven, all around the quarters
गृह्यमाणे-असुरपतौ
being captivated Asura's lord
विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना
by Vishnu The All- powerful
As the lord of the Asuras was taken captive by The All-powerful Lord Vishnu, there was a great hue and cry on the earth in the heavens and around the four quarters.
तं बद्धं वारुणै: पाशैर्भगवानाह वामन: ।
नष्टश्रियं स्थिरप्रज्ञमुदारयशसं नृप ॥२८॥
तम् बद्धम् वारुणै: पाशै:-
to him, bound by Varuna's snares
भगवान्-आह वामन:
The All-Mighty said, The Dwarf
नष्ट-श्रियम् स्थिर-प्रज्ञम्-
who had lost his fortune, to the steady of mind
उदार-यशसम् नृप
and free flowing fame, O King!
O King! The All-Mighty Dwarf said to him, who was bound by Varuna's snares, though he had lost his fortune, yet was steady of mind and had a free flowing fame.
पदानि त्रीणि दत्तानि भूमेर्मह्यं त्वयासुर ।
द्वाभ्यां क्रान्ता मही सर्वा तृतीयमुपकल्पय ॥२९॥
पदानि त्रीणि दत्तानि भूमे:-
steps three were given of land
मह्यम् त्वया-असुर
to me by you O Asura!
द्वाभ्याम् क्रान्ता मही सर्वा
by two covered the land whole
तृतीयम्-उपकल्पय
for third, arrange
'O Asura! Three steps of land was given to Me by you. By two steps, the whole land is covered, now arrange for the third.'
यावद् तपत्यसौ गोभिर्यावदिन्दु: सहोडुभि: ।
यावद् वर्षति पर्जन्यस्तावती भूरियं तव ॥३०॥
यावद् तपति-असौ गोभि:-
up till where this (earth) is warmed by (Sun's) rays
यावत्-इन्दु: सह-उडुभि:
up till where the moon with the lunar mansions
यावद् वर्षति पर्जन्य:-
up till where rains the Rain god
तावती भू:-इयम् तव
till there earth this is yours
Up till where the earth is warmed by the rays of the Sun, up till where the moon and the lunar mansions illuminates it, uptill where the Rain god showers rain, till there, the earth is yours.
पदैकेन मया क्रान्तो भूर्लोक: खं दिशस्तनो: ।
स्वर्लोकस्तु द्वितीयेन पश्यतस्ते स्वमात्मना ॥३१॥
पद-एकेन मया क्रान्त:
in foot one, by Me is covered
भू:-लोक: खम् दिश:-तनो:
the earth region, sky, the quarters by the body
स्वर्लोक:-तु द्वितीयेन
the celestial region indeed, by the second
पश्यत:-ते स्वम्-आत्मना
as looked on by you yourself
As looked on by you yourself, the terrestrial region has been covered by Me in one foot step, the sky and the quarters by My body, and the celestial regions in the second foot step.
प्रतिश्रुतमदातुस्ते निरये वास इष्यते ।
विश त्वं निरयं तस्मात् गुरुणा चानुमोदित: ॥३२॥
प्रतिश्रुतम्-अदातु:-ते
promised, not giving, your
निरये वास: इष्यते
in hell residing is ascertained
विश त्वम् निरयम् तस्मात्
enter you hell, because
गुरुणा च-अनुमोदित:
by preceptor and recommended
As you have not given what you promised, your residing in hell is ascertained. So you enter hell, also because it is recommended by your preceptor as well.
वृथा मनोरथस्तस्य दूरे स्वर्ग: पतत्यध: ।
प्रतिश्रुतस्यादानेन योर्थिनं विप्रलम्भते ॥३३॥
वृथा मनोरथ:-तस्य
purposeless are the aspirations, his,
दूरे स्वर्ग: पतति-अध:
far fetched is heaven, descends into hell
प्रतिश्रुतस्य-अदानेन
for the promised by not giving
य:-अर्थिनम् विप्रलम्भते
who, the petitioner cheats
All his aspirations are purposeless, heaven is far fetched, and he descend to hell and cheats the petitioner by not giving to him that which was promised.
विप्रलब्धो ददामीति त्वयाहं चाढ्यमानिना ।
तद् व्यलीकफलं भुङ्क्ष्व निरयं कतिचित् समा: ॥३४॥
विप्रलब्ध: ददामि-इति
have cheated, 'will give' thus
त्वया-अहम् च आढ्यमानिना
by you I and by the arrogant
तद् व्यलीक-फलम् भुङ्क्ष्व
of that untruth result bear
निरयम् कतिचित् समा:
in hell for some years
'Will give' thus, being promised, I have been cheated by you the arrogant. Now reap the fruit of this untruth in the hell for some years.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां अष्टमे स्कन्धे वामनप्रादुर्भावे एकोनविंश: अध्याय: ॥२१॥
Thus ends the twenty-first discourse entitled 'Bali put in bonds', bearing on the story of the descent of the divine Dwarf, in Book Eight of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
