राजा-उवाच -
The King said -
मन्वन्तराणि सर्वाणि त्वयोक्तानि श्रुतानि मे ।

वीर्याण्यनन्तवीर्यस्य हरेस्तत्र कृतानि च ॥१॥


मन्वन्तराणि सर्वाणि
of the Manvantaras all (six)
त्वया-उक्तानि श्रुतानि मे
by you told, heard by me
वीर्याणि-अनन्त-वीर्यस्य
heroic deeds of, of The Lord of endless prowess
हरे:-तत्र कृतानि च
Shree Hari, in there done and

I have heard the description of all the six Manvantaras as told by you, also of the heroic deeds done there in by Shree Hari of endless prowess.


योऽसौ सत्यव्रतो नाम राजर्षिर्द्रविडेश्वर: ।

ज्ञानं योऽतीतकल्पान्ते लेभे पुरुषसेवया ॥२॥


य:-असौ सत्यव्रत: नाम
that this Satyavrata named
राजर्षि:-द्रविड-ईश्वर:
royal sage, Drawida's ruler
ज्ञानम् य:-अतीत-कल्प-अन्ते
enlightenment who, in the last Kalpa's end
लेभे पुरुष-सेवया
attained by The Supreme Person's devotion

This same royal sage, Satyavrata by name, who was the ruler of Dravida, attained enlightenment by the service, devotion of The Supreme Person, at the end of the previous Kalpa.


स वै विवस्वत: पुत्रो मनुरासीदिति श्रुतम् ।

त्वत्तस्तस्य सुताश्चोक्ता इक्ष्वाकुप्रमुखा नृपा: ॥३॥


स: वै विवस्वत: पुत्र:
he indeed, Vivasvata's son
मनु:-आसीत्-इति श्रुतम्
Manu was, this is heard
त्वत्त:-तस्य सुता:-च-उक्ता:
from you, his sons and is said
इक्ष्वाकु-प्रमुखा: नृपा:
Ikshwaaku the leader of the other kings

This we have heard from you that, Satyavrata, the son of Vivasvaan was indeed the Manu, and you have said that Ikshwaaku, and other of his sons were the leaders of the other kings.


तेषां वंशं पृथग् ब्रह्मन् वंश्यानुचरितानि च ।

कीर्तयस्व महाभाग नित्यं शुश्रूषतां हि न: ॥४॥


तेषाम् वंशम् पृथग् ब्रह्मन्
of their race, separately, O holy Braahmana!
वंश्य-अनुचरितानि च
of the race members the doings and
कीर्तयस्व महाभाग
do narrate, O Blessed One!
नित्यम् शुश्रूषताम् हि न:
always to hear eager as we are

O holy Braahmana! O Blessed One! as we are always eager to hear, do tell us about their race, and narrate to us the doings of the race members.


ये भूता ये भविष्याश्च भवन्त्यद्यतनाश्च ये ।

तेषां पुण्यकीर्तीनां सर्वेषां वद विक्रमान् ॥५॥


ये भूता: ये भविष्या:-च
of those gone by, those who in the future
भवन्ति-अद्यतना:-च ये
will be, today and who are,
तेषाम् पुण्य-कीर्तीनाम्
their, of the sacred renowned
सर्वेषाम् वद विक्रमान्
of all, do say the deeds of valour

In their race, of those who have gone, of those who will be in the future, and of those who are present today, do tell the deeds of valour of all of them who are of sacred renown.


सूत उवाच -
Soota said -
एवं परीक्षिता राज्ञा सदसि ब्रह्मवादिनाम् ।

पृष्ट: प्रोवाच भगवाञ्छुक: परमधर्मवित् ॥६॥


एवम् परीक्षिता राज्ञा
in this manner, by Pareekshita the king
सदसि ब्रह्म-वादिनाम्
in the assembly of Vedas' exponents
पृष्ट: प्रोवाच
asked, answered
भगवान्-शुक: परम-धर्म-वित्
lord Shuka, of highest righteousness the knower

In the assembly of the exponents of the Vedas, lord Shuka, the knower of the highest righteousness, ventured to speak, when he was asked thus, by the king, Pareekshit.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
श्रूयतां मानवो वंश: प्राचुर्येण परंतप ।

न शक्यते विस्तरतो वक्तुं वर्षशतैरपि ॥७॥


श्रूयताम् मानव: वंश:
hear of Manu's lineage
प्राचुर्येण परंतप
in short, O Practiser of austerities!
न शक्यते विस्तरत: वक्तुम्
not is possible in detail to be narrated
वर्ष-शतै:-अपि
in years hundred also

O Practiciser of austerities! Do listen of the line-age of Vivasvata Manu, in short, because, its detailed narration is not possible to be done even in hundred years.


परावरेषां भूतानामात्मा य: पुरुष: पर: ।

स: एवासीदिदं विश्वं कल्पान्तेऽन्यन्न किंचन ॥८॥


पर-अवरेषाम् भूतानाम्-
of high and low created beings,
आत्मा य: पुरुष: पर:
the sustainer, That Person Supreme
स: एव-आसीत्-इदम् विश्वम्
He alone was this world
कल्प-अन्ते-अन्य-न किंचन
at Kalpa's end, other not anyone

At the end of the Kalpa, The Supreme Person, the sustainer of all high and low created beings, He alone was as this world and there was nothing else.


तस्य नाभे: समभवत् पद्मकोशो हिरण्मय: ।

तस्मिञ्जज्ञे महाराज स्वयम्भूश्चतुरानन: ॥९॥


तस्य नाभे: समभवत्
in His navel, there sprang
पद्म-कोश: हिरण्मय:
a lotus calyx
तस्मिन्-जज्ञे महाराज
in that appeared O great King!
स्वयम्भू:-चतुरानन:
the self-born

From His navel sprang up a golden lotus calyx, from which there appeared the self-born four faced Brahmaa.


मरीचिर्मनसस्तस्य जज्ञे तस्यापि कश्यप: ।

दाक्षायण्यां ततोऽदित्यां विवस्वानभवत् सुत: ॥१०॥


मरीचि:-मनस:-तस्य
Mareechi, from mind his (Brahmaa)
जज्ञे तस्य-अपि कश्यप:
was born, his also Kashyapa
दाक्षायण्याम् तत:-अदित्याम्
by Daksha's daughter then, Aditi
विवस्वान्-अभवत् सुत:
Vivasvaan was born the son

Mareechi was born from the mind of Brahmaa, from Mareechi, was born Kashyapa, from Kashyapa was born a son, Vivasvaan, through Aditi, the daughter of Daksha.


ततो मनु: श्राद्धदेव: संज्ञायामास भारत ।

श्रद्धायां जनयामास दश पुत्रान् स आत्मवान् ॥११॥


तत: मनु: श्राद्धदेव:
then, Manu Shraaddhadeva
संज्ञायाम्-आस भारत
from Sangyaa was born, O Scion of Bharata!
श्रद्धायाम् जनयामास
from Shraddhaa gave birth to
दश पुत्रान् स: आत्मवान्
ten sons, he, the high minded

From Vivasvaan wife Sangyaa Shraaddhadeva Manu was born. From him, the high minded Shraaddhadeva, his wife Shraddhaa gave birth to ten sons.


इक्ष्वाकुनृगशर्यातिदिष्टधृष्टकरूषकान् ।

नरिष्यन्तं पृषध्रं च नभगं च कविं विभु: ॥१२॥


इक्ष्वाकु-नृग-शर्याति-
Ikshwaaku, Nriga, Sharyaatee,
दिष्ट-धृष्ट-करूषकान्
Dishta, Dhrishta, Karooshaka,
नरिष्यन्तम् पृषध्रम् च
Narishyanta, Prishadhra, and
नभगम् च कविम् विभु:
Nabhaga and Kavi, to Manu

To King Shraaddhadeva, Manu, were born, Ikshwaaku, Nriga, Sharyaatee, Dishta, Dhrishta, Karooshaka, Narishyanta, Prishadhra, and Nabhaga and Kavi.


अप्रजस्य मनो: पूर्वं वसिष्ठो भगवान् किल ।

मित्रावरुणयोरिष्टिं प्रजार्थमकरोत् प्रभु: ॥१३॥


अप्रजस्य मनो: पूर्वम्
for issueless Manu, in the beginning,
वसिष्ठ: भगवान् किल
Vashishtha, the glorious (sage) it is said,
मित्रावरुणयो:-इष्टिम्
of Mitra and Varuna, propitiation sacrifice,
प्रजा-अर्थम्-अकरोत् प्रभु:
for a son's sake performed, the powerful

In the beginning, for the purpose of Manu begetting a son, who was issueless, the powerful and glorious sage Vashishtha, performed a sacrifice to propitiate Mitra and Varuna.


तत्र श्रद्धा मनो: पत्नी होतारं समयाचत ।

दुहित्रर्थमुपागम्य प्रणिपत्य पयोव्रता ॥१४॥


तत्र श्रद्धा मनो: पत्नी
there, Shraddhaa, Manu's wife
होतारम् समयाचत
to the presiding priest, begged
दुहितृ-अर्थम्-उपागम्य
of a daughter's sake approaching,
प्रणिपत्य पयोव्रता
bowing prostrate on the floor, subsisting on milk

There, during that sacrifice, Manu's wife Shraddhaa, who was subsisting on milk, approached the presiding priest and bowing by lying prostrate on the floor, begged him for the sake of a daughter.


प्रेषितोऽध्वर्युणा होता ध्यायंस्तत् सुसमाहित: ।

हविषि व्यचरत् तेन वषट्कारं गृणन्द्विज: ॥१५॥


प्रेषित:-अध्वर्युणा होता
sent, by Adhvaryu , the propitiating priest,
ध्यायन्-तत् सुसमाहित:
meditating on that with concentration
हविषि व्यचरत् तेन
the oblation poured by him
वषट्कारम् गृणन्-द्विज:
Vashat' muttering the Braahmana

The propitiating priest, the Braahmana, with concentration muttered 'Vashat' as directed by the Adhvaryu, meditating on it, as he poured oblation into the sacrificial fire.


होतुस्तद्व्यभिचारेण कन्येला नाम साभवत् ।

तां विलोक्य मनु: प्राह नातिहृष्टमना गुरुम् ॥१६॥


होतु:-तत्-व्यभिचारेण
of the presiding priest's that deviation
कन्या-इला नाम सा-अभवत्
daughter Ilaa named, she was born
ताम् विलोक्य मनु: प्राह
her seeing, Manu said
न-अति-हृष्टमना गुरुम्
not very happy in mind, to his preceptor

Due to the said deviation by the presiding priest, a daughter by the name of Ilaa was born. Manu was not very happy in the mind on seeing her, and he said to his preceptor…


भगवन् किमिदं जातं कर्म वो ब्रह्मवादिना ।

विपर्ययमहो कष्टं मैवं स्याद् ब्रह्मविक्रिया ॥१७॥


भगवन् किम्-इदम् जातम्
O holy sage! what has this happened
कर्म व: ब्रह्म-वादिना
the ritual by you the exponent of the Vedas
विपर्ययम्-अहो मा-एवम् स्यात्
the opposite, Alas! should not this be
ब्रह्म-विक्रिया
of Vedic mantras' reversal

'O holy sage! What is this that has happened? The rituals conducted by you the exponent of the Vedas. Alas! What a reversal of the Vedic Mantras which should not be.'


यूयं मन्त्रविदो युक्तास्तपसा दग्धकिल्विषा: ।

कुत: संकल्पवैषम्यमनृतं विबुधेष्विव ॥१८॥


यूयम् मन्त्र-विद:
you all are in Mantras well versed
युक्ता:-तपसा दग्ध-किल्विषा:
well equipped with austerities, have burnt all sins
कुत: संकल्प-वैषम्यम्-
how then, in your decision is disparity
अनृतम् विबुधेषु-इव
untruth in the gods like

You all are well versed in the Vedic Mantras, are well equipped with austerities, and have all your impurities burnt out. How then is there disparity in you sacred purpose which is like untruthfulness in the gods.


तन्निशम्य वचस्तस्य भगवान् प्रपितामह: ।

होतुर्व्यतिक्रमं ज्ञात्वा बभाषे रविनन्दनम् ॥१९॥


तत्-निशम्य वच:-तस्य
that hearing, words his
भगवान् प्रपितामह:
glorious sage, grandfather of my grandfather
होतु:-व्यतिक्रमम्
of the presiding priest's deviation
ज्ञात्वा बभाषे रवि-नन्दनम्
coming to know, said to the Sun-god's son

The glorious sage Vashishtha, the grandfather of my grandfather, on hearing his these words, and having come to know of the deviation made by the presiding priest, said this to the son of the Sun-god….


एतत् संकल्पवैषम्यं होतुस्ते व्यभिचारत: ।

तथापि साधयिष्ये ते सुप्रजास्त्वम् स्वतेजसा ॥२०॥


एतत् संकल्प-वैषम्यम्
this, of the purpose distortion
होतु:-ते व्यभिचारत:
by presiding priest, yours, by contrary execution
तथा-अपि साधयिष्ये ते
then even will accomplish for you
सुप्रजा:-त्वम् स्व-तेजसा
good progeny to you, by own glory

This distortion of your purpose has happened due to the contrary execution of the Mantras by the presiding priest. Yet, I will confer on you a good progeny by my own spiritual glory.


एवं व्यवसितो राजन् भगवान् स महायशा: ।

अस्तौषीदादिपुरुषमिलाया: पुंस्त्वकाम्यया ॥२१॥


एवम् व्यवसित: राजन्
thus deciding, O King (Pareekshit)
भगवान् स: महायशा:
glorious he, of great fame
अस्तौषीत्-आदि-पुरुषम्-
extolled the Ancient Person (Vishnu)
इलाया: पुंस्त्व-काम्यया
Ilaa's male-ness desiring

O King! The highly famed glorious sage, thus resolving, extolled The Ancient Person, Lord Vishnu, with the desire of changing Ilaa into a male.


तस्मै कामवरं तुष्टो भगवान् हरिरीश्वर: ।

ददाविलाभवत् तेन सुद्युम्न: पुरुषर्षभ: ॥२२॥


तस्मै काम-वरम् तुष्ट:
to him, the desired boon, pleased,
भगवान् हरि:-ईश्वर:
Almighty Lord Shree Hari all-powerful
ददौ-इला-अभवत् तेन
gave, Ila became by that
सुद्युम्न: पुरुष-ऋषभ:
Sudyumna a man foremost

Pleased with him, The Almighty and All-powerful Lord Shree Hari gave to him the desired boon, by that Ila became a man, the foremost.


स एकदा महाराज विचरन् मृगयां वने ।

वृत: कतिपयामात्यैरश्वमारुह्य सैन्धवम् ॥२३॥


स: एकदा महाराज
he one day, O Great King!
विचरन् मृगयाम् वने
went for hunting in the forest
वृत: कतिपय-आमात्यै:-
accompanied by a few ministers
अश्वम्-आरुह्य सैन्धवम्
horse mounted on, of Sindhu breed

O Great King! One day he went for hunting in the forest mounted on a horse of Sindhu breed, accompanied by a few ministers.


प्रगृह्य रुचिरम् चापम् शरांश्च परमाद्भुतान् ।

दंशितोऽनुमृगं वीरो जगाम दिशमुत्तराम् ॥२४॥


प्रगृह्य रुचिरम् चापम्
getting hold of a charming bow
शरा:-च परम्-अद्भुतान्
arrows and most wonderful
दंशित:-अनुमृगम् वीर:
armoured, proceeded for a game, the hero
जगाम दिशम्-उत्तराम्
went in the direction northern

Getting hold of a charming bow and the most wonderful arrows, the armoured hero proceeded in the pursuit of a game in the northern direction.


स कुमारो वनं मेरोरधस्तात् प्रविवेश ह ।

यत्रास्ते भगवाञ्छर्वो रममाण: सहोमया ॥२५॥


स: कुमार: वनम् मेरो:-
that prince, in the forest at Mt. Meru's
अधस्तात् प्रविवेश ह
foot, entered indeed
यत्र-आस्ते भगवान्-शर्व:
where there was Lord Shiva
रममाण: सह-उमया
amorously sporting with Umaa

That prince entered a forest at the foot of the Mount Meru, where Lord Shiva was amorously sporting with Umaa.


तस्मिन् प्रविष्ट एवासौ सुद्युम्न: परवीरहा ।

अपश्यत् स्त्रियमात्मानमश्वं च वडवां नृप ॥२६॥


तस्मिन् प्रविष्ट: एव-असौ
in that entered as he
सुद्युम्न: परवीरहा
Sudyumna, enemy warriors the killer
अपश्यत् स्त्रियम्-आत्मानम्-
saw woman himself
अश्वम् च वडवाम् नृप
horse and mare O King!

O King! As he, Sudyumna, the killer of enemy warriors, entered that forest, he saw himself as a woman and the horse as a mare.


तथा तदनुगा: सर्वे आत्मलिङ्गविपर्ययम् ।

दृष्ट्वा विमनसोऽभूवन् वीक्षमाणा: परस्परम् ॥२७॥


तथा तत्-अनुगा: सर्वे
also, his followers all
आत्म-लिङ्ग-विपर्ययम्
own gender change
दृष्ट्वा विमनस:-अभूवन्
seeing sad became
वीक्षमाणा: परस्परम्
looking at each other

Similarly, all his followers saw the change in their genders, and became morose, as they looked at each other.


राजा-उवाच -
The King (Pareekshit) said -
कथमेवंगुणो देश: केन वा भगवन् कृत: ।

प्रश्नमेनं समाचक्ष्व परं कौतूहलं हि न: ॥२८॥


कथम्-एवम् गुण: देश:
how, of such quality is the land
केन वा भगवन् कृत:
by whom or, O Holy one! It is done
प्रश्नम्-एनम् समाचक्ष्व
question this fully answer
परं कौतूहलं हि न:
highly inquisitive indeed are we

O Holy one! How was this land of such quality or who made it such? Do answer this question fully, as we are highly inquisitive.


श्री शुक- उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एकदा गिरिशं द्रष्टुमृषयस्तत्र सुव्रता: ।

दिशो वितिमिराभासा: कुर्वन्त: समुपागमन् ॥२९॥


एकदा गिरिशम् द्रष्टुम्-
one day Lord Shiva to see
ऋषय:-तत्र सुव्रता:
the sages there, of sacred vows
दिश: वितिमिर-
the directions devoid of darkness
आभासा: कुर्वन्त: समुपागमन्
and (other) lights, rendering, approached

One day, to see Lord Shiva, the sages of sacred vows, came there, dispelling the darkness and the other lights by their splendour.


तान् विलोक्याम्बिका देवी विवासा व्रीडिता भृशम् ।

भर्तुरङ्कात् समुत्थाय नीवीमाश्वथ पर्यधात् ॥३०॥


तान् विलोक्य-अम्बिका देवी
them seeing, Ambika (Paarvati) goddess
विवासा व्रीडिता भृशम्
unclothed, ashamed very much
भर्तु:-अङ्कात् समुत्थाय
from husband's lap arising
नीवीम्-आशु-अथ पर्यधात्
clothes soon then put on

Goddess Ambika, (Paarvati), seeing them, was very much ashamed as she was not clothed. Immediately rising from her husbands lap she then put on the clothes.


ऋषयोऽपि तयोर्वीक्ष्य प्रसङ्गं रममाणयो: ।

निवृत्ता: प्रययुस्तस्मान्नरनारायणाश्रमम् ॥३१॥


ऋषय:-अपि तयो:-वीक्ष्य
the sages also, both of them seeing
प्रसङ्गम् रममाणयो:
engaged in amorous activity
निवृत्ता: प्रययु:-तस्मात्-
retreated and went from there
नरनारायण-आश्रमम्
to the Nara-Naaraayana hermitage

The sages also, when they saw them both engaged thus in amorous activity, retreated from there and went to the hermitage of Nara-Naaraayana.


तदिदं भगवानाह प्रियाया: प्रियकाम्यया ।

स्थानं य: प्रविशेदेतत् स वै योषिद् भवेदिति ॥३२॥


तत्-इदम् भगवान्-आह
then, this Lord (Shiva) said
प्रियाया: प्रिय-काम्यया
of the beloved's desire to fulfil
स्थानम् य: प्रविशेत्-एतत्
place who enters this
स: वै योषित् भवेत्-इति
he certainly woman will become, this

Then, Lord Shiva, in order to please his beloved, said this, 'Who ever enters this place, he will certainly become a woman.'


तत् ऊर्ध्वं वनं तद् वै पुरुषा वर्जयन्ति हि ।

सा चानुचरसंयुक्ता विचचार वनाद् वनम् ॥३३॥


तत् ऊर्ध्वम् वनम् तद् वै
there after, forest that indeed
पुरुषा: वर्जयन्ति हि
men avoid surely
सा च-अनुचर-संयुक्ता
she (Sudyumna) and the followers along with
विचचार वनात् वनम्
roamed about from forest to forest

There after, the men folk certainly avoided that forest. She, Sudyumna, along with her followers roamed about from forest to forest.


अथ तामाश्रमाभ्याशे चरन्तीं प्रमदोत्तमाम् ।

स्त्रीभि: परिवृतां वीक्ष्य चकमे भगवान् बुध: ॥३४॥


अथ ताम्-आश्रम-अभ्याशे
then her, the hermitage near around
चरन्तीम् प्रमदा-उत्तमाम्
roaming, the young woman excellent
स्त्रीभि: परिवृताम् वीक्ष्य
by the women surrounded seeing
चकमे भगवान् बुध:
desired the glorious Budha (planet Mercury)

Then, Budha, the son of moon, the planet Mercury, saw the excellent young woman roaming near around his hermitage accompanied by other young women. He then had a desire for her.


सापि तम् चकमे सुभ्रु: सोमराजसुतं पतिम् ।

स तस्यां जनयामास पुरूरवसमात्मजम् ॥३५॥


सा-अपि तम् चकमे सुभ्रु:
she also him desired the beautiful browed one
सोमराज-सुतम् पतिम्
moon son as husband
स: तस्याम् जनयामास
he from her begot
पुरूरवसम्-आत्मजम्
Pururavaa as son

She, the beautiful browed one also coveted the son of King Soma, the moon, as her husband. He, Budha begot a son Pururavaa from her.


एवं स्त्रीत्वमनुप्राप्त: सुद्युम्नो मानवो नृप: ।

सस्मार स्वकुलाचार्यं वसिष्ठमिति शुश्रुम ॥३६॥


एवम् स्त्रीत्वम्-अनुप्राप्त:
in this manner, womanhood having attained
सुद्युम्न: मानव: नृप:
Sudyumna, Manu's son, the king
सस्मार स्व-कुल-आचार्यम्
remembered own race's preceptor
वसिष्ठम्-इति शुश्रुम
Vashishtha, we have heard

We have heard that having attained the form of a woman, King Sudyumna, the son of Vaivasvata Manu, remembered the preceptor of his own race, the sage Vashishtha.


स तस्य तां दशां दृष्ट्वा कृपया भृशपीडित: ।

सुद्युम्नस्याशयन् पुंसत्वमुपाधावत शङ्करम् ॥३७॥


स: तस्य ताम् दशाम् दृष्ट्वा
he, his that condition seeing
कृपया भृश-पीडित:
with compassion was very troubled
सुद्युम्नस्य-आशयन् पुंसत्वम्-
of Sudyumna desiring manhood
उपाधावत शङ्करम्
mentally approached Shankara

Seeing that condition of Sudyumna, sage Vashishtha was very troubled with compassion, and desiring his manhood, mentally approached Lord Shankara.


तुष्टस्तस्मै स भगवानृषये प्रियमावहन् ।

स्वां च वाचमृतां कुर्वन्निदमाह विशांपते ॥३८॥


तुष्ट:-तस्मै स: भगवान्-
pleased with him, He, Lord (Shankara)
ऋषये प्रियम्-आवहन्
of the sage the desire to fulfil
स्वाम् च वाचम्-ऋताम् कुर्वन्-
own and words true to do
इदम्-आह विशांपते
this said, O Pareekshit!

O Pareekshit! He, Lord Shankara, pleased with him and to fulfil his desire, also to justify His own words, said this,….


मासं पुमान् स भविता मासं स्त्री तव गोत्रज: ।

इत्थं व्यवस्थया कामं सुद्युम्नोऽवतु मेदिनीम् ॥३९॥


मासम् पुमान् स: भविता
for a month male he will be
मासम् स्त्री तव गोत्रज:
for one month female, your protégé
इत्म् व्यवस्थया कामम्
by this arrangement, as desired
सुद्युम्न:-अवतु मेदिनीम्
Sudyumna may protect the earth

'For one month your protégé will be a male and for one month he will be a female. As desired Sudyumna may protect the earth with this arrangement.’


आचार्यानुग्रहात् कामं लब्ध्वा पुंस्त्वं व्यवस्थया ।

पालयामास जगतीं नाभ्यनन्दन् स्म तं प्रजा: ॥४०॥


आचार्य-अनुग्रहात् कामम्
by the preceptor's grace, desire
लब्ध्वा पुंस्त्वम् व्यवस्थया
being fulfilled, by the manhood arrangement
पालयामास जगतीम्
ruled the earth
न-अभ्यनन्दन् स्म तम् प्रजा:
did not approve of him the people

By the grace of his preceptor he had obtained the desired manhood according to the arrangement, and ruled the earth, but the people did not approve of him.


तस्योत्कलो गयो राजन् विमलश्च सुतास्त्रय: ।

दक्षिणापथराजानो बभूवुर्धर्मवत्सला: ॥४१॥


तस्य-उत्कल: गय: राजन्
his, Utkala, Gaya, O King!
विमल:-च सुता:-त्रय:
Vimala and sons three
दक्षिणा-पथ राजान:
of the Southern region, the rulers
बभूवु:-धर्म-वत्सला:
became, of righteousness lovers

O King! He had three sons, Utkala, Gaya and Vimala, who were lovers of righteousness and became the rulers of the Southern regions.


तत: परिणते काले प्रतिष्ठानपति: प्रभु: ।

पुरूरवस उत्सृज्य गां पुत्राय गतो वनम् ॥४२॥


तत: परिणते काले
after that, at the change of time (old age)
प्रतिष्ठान-पति: प्रभु:
of Pratishthaana the ruler, the capable
पुरूरवसे उत्सृज्य गाम्
to Pururavaa handing over the earth
पुत्राय गत: वनम्
for the son, went away to the forest

After that, at the change of time, at his old age, the ruler of Pratishthaana, the capable Sudyumna, handing over the earth to his son Pururavaa, and went away to the forest.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां नवमस्कन्धे इलोपाख्याने प्रथमोऽध्याय: ॥१॥


Thus ends the first discourse, forming part of the story of Ilaa, in Book Nine of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
