श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं गतेऽथ सुद्युम्ने मनुर्वैवस्वत: सुते ।

पुत्रकामस्तपस्तेपे यमुनायां शतं समा: ॥१॥


एवम् गते-अथ सुद्युम्ने
in this manner, having gone then Sudyumna
मनु:-वैवस्वत: सुते
Manu Vaivasvata, of son
पुत्र-काम:-तप:-तेपे
son desiring austerities practiced
यमुनायाम् शतम् समा:
on Yamuna's (bank) for hundred years

In this manner, his son Sudyumna having gone away, Manu Vaivasvata, with the desire of a son, practiced austerities on the bank of river Yamuna.


ततोऽयजन्मनुर्देवमपत्यार्थं हरिं प्रभुम् ।

इक्ष्वाकुपूर्वजान् पुत्राँल्लेभे स्वसदृशान् दश ॥२॥


तत:-अयजत्-मनु:-देवम्-
then worshipped, Manu, The Lord
अपत्य-अर्थम् हरिम् प्रभुम्
for progeny sake, Shree Hari Almighty
इक्ष्वाकु-पूर्वजान् पुत्रान्-
Ikshwaaku, the eldest sons
लेभे स्व-सदृशान् दश
begot, self- like ten

Then, Manu worshipped The Almighty Lord Shree Hari, for the sake of progeny. Consequently, he begot ten sons resembling himself, the eldest was Ikshwaaku.


पृषध्रस्तु मनो: पुत्रो गोपालो गुरुणा कृत: ।

पालयामास गा यत्तो रात्र्यां वीरासनव्रत: ॥३॥


पृषध्र:-तु मनो: पुत्र:
Prishadhra, indeed, Manu's son,
गोपाल: गुरुणा कृत:
a cowherd by the preceptor made
पालयामास गा यत्त:
tended the cows vigilantly
रात्र्याम् वीरासन-व्रत:
in the night in 'Veer asana' pose vowed

Manu's son Prishadhra, who was made a cowherd by the preceptor Vashishtha, with a vow tended the cows in the night, maintaining the 'Veer asana' pose.


एकदा प्राविशद् गोष्ठं शार्दूलो निशि वर्षति ।

शयाना गाव उत्थाय भीतास्ता बभ्रमुर्व्रजे ॥४॥


एकदा प्राविशद् गोष्ठम्
one day, entered the cow shed
शार्दूल: निशि वर्षति
a tiger, in the night when it rained
शयाना: गाव: उत्थाय
the sleeping cows were awakened
भीता:-ता: बभ्रमु:-व्रजे
in fear they ran about in the cow shed

One day, in the night when it was raining, a tiger entered the cow shed. The sleeping cows were awakened and in fear they ran here and there in the shed.


एकां जग्राह बलवान् सा चुक्रोश भयातुरा ।

तस्यास्तत् क्रन्दितं श्रुत्वा पृषध्रोऽभिससार ह ॥५॥


एकाम् जग्राह बलवान्
one (of them) seized the powerful
सा चुक्रोश भय-आतुरा
she screamed, with fear overtaken
तस्या:-तत् क्रन्दितम् श्रुत्वा
her that cry listening
पृषध्र:-अभिससार ह
Prishadhra rushed forth

The powerful beast seized one of them. The cow overwhelmed with fear gave a fearful cry, hearing which Prishadhra rushed forth.


खड्गमादाय तरसा प्रलीनोडुगणे निशि ।

अजानन्नहनद् बभ्रो: शिर: शार्दूलशङ्कया ॥६॥


खड्गम्-आदाय तरसा
sword taking quickly
प्रलीन-उडुगणे निशि
(when) had disappeared the stars, in the night
अजानन्-अहनद् बभ्रो: शिर:
unknowingly cut off the cow's head
शार्दूल-शङ्कया
tiger's mistaking

He quickly snatched his sword, and in that dark night when the stars had disappeared, he unknowingly cut off the head of the cow, mistaking it for the tiger's.


व्याघ्रोऽपि वृक्णश्रवणो निस्त्रिंशाग्राहतस्तत: ।

निश्चक्राम भृशं भीतो रक्तं पथि समुत्सृजन् ॥७॥


व्याघ्र:-अपि वृक्ण-श्रवण:
the tiger also with severed ear
निस्त्रिंश-अग्र-आहत:-तत:
by the sword's end point hurt then,
निश्चक्राम भृशम् भीत:
ran away very much afraid
रक्तम् पथि समुत्सृजन्
blood on the way dropping

The tiger whose ear was severed with the end point of the sword, was also very much afraid and ran away, dropping blood on the way.


मन्यमानो हतं व्याघ्रं पृषध्र: परवीरहा ।

अद्राक्षीत् स्वहतां बभ्रुं व्युष्टायां निशि दु:खित: ॥८॥


मन्यमान: हतम् व्याघ्रम्
believing to have killed the tiger
पृषध्र: परवीरहा
Prishadhra the slayer of enemy warriors
अद्राक्षीत् स्व-हताम् बभ्रुम्
saw, by himself killed the cow
व्युष्टायाम् निशि दु:खित:
at the end of the night, very sorrowful

Prishadhra, the slayer of the enemy warriors, believed that the tiger was killed. At the end of the night, he was very much sorrowful when he saw that it was the cow who was killed by himself.


तं शशाप कुलाचार्य: कृतागसमकामत: ।

न क्षत्रबन्धु: शूद्रस्त्वं कर्मणा भवितामुना ॥९॥


तम् शशाप कुल-आचार्य:
him cursed, the preceptor of the race
कृत्-आगसम्-अकामत:
having committed a sin unintentionally
न क्षत्र-बन्धु: शूद्र:-त्वम्
not of Kshatriya race, Shoodra you,
कर्मणा भविता-अमुना
by deed will be by this

Even though he had committed the sin unintentionally, the preceptor of the race, sage Vashishtha, cursed him, 'You will not be a Kshatriya, you will be a Shoodra because of this deed.'


एवं शप्तस्तु गुरुणा प्रत्यगृह्णात् कृताञ्जलि: ।

अधारयद् व्रतं वीर ऊर्ध्वरेता मुनिप्रियम् ॥१०॥


एवम् शप्त:-तु गुरुणा
in this manner, cursed indeed by the preceptor
प्रत्यगृह्णात् कृत-अञ्जलि:
accepted it with joined palms
अधारयत् व्रतम् वीर
undertook the vow the hero
ऊर्ध्वरेता: मुनि-प्रियम्
of celibacy, to the sages dear

In this manner, cursed by the preceptor, the hero accepted it with joined palms, and undertook the vow of celibacy which is so dear to the sages.


वासुदेवे भगवति सर्वात्मनि परेऽमले ।

एकान्तित्वं गतो भक्त्या सर्वभूतसुहृत्सम: ॥११॥


वासुदेवे भगवति
in Vaasudeva, The Lord
सर्व-आत्मनि परे-अमले
in of all The Soul, in (The One) beyond blemishes
एकान्तित्वम् गत: भक्त्या
in solitude went with devotion
सर्व-भूत-सुहृत्-सम:
to The One of all beings' friend like

He went into solitude with devotion to The Lord Vaasudeva, The One beyond blemishes, The One Who is like a friend to all created beings.


विमुक्तसङ्ग: शान्तात्मा संयताक्षोऽपरिग्रह: ।

यदृच्छयोपपन्नेन कल्पयन् वृत्तिमात्मन: ॥१२॥


विमुक्त-सङ्ग: शान्त-आत्मा
without company, tranquil minded
संयत-अक्ष:-अपरिग्रह:
of controlled senses, non-coveting
यदृच्छया-उपपन्नेन
by chance obtained
कल्पयन् वृत्तिम्-आत्मन:
maintaining the livelihood of himself

He was without any company, tranquil in mind, of controlled senses, non-coveting, maintaining himself by livelihood obtained by chance,…


आत्मन्यात्मानमाधाय ज्ञानतृप्त: समाहित: ।

विचचार महीमेतां जडान्धबधिराकृति: ॥१३॥


आत्मनि-आत्मानम्-आधाय
in The Self the mind fixing
ज्ञान-तृप्त: समाहित:
by wisdom saturated, well composed
विचचार महीम्-एताम्
roamed the earth this
जड-अन्ध-बधिर-आकृति:
in a stupid, blind, deaf appearance

He fixed his mind on The Self, was saturated with wisdom, was well composed, and roamed this earth appearing like a stupid blind and deaf person.


एवं वृत्तो वनं गत्वा दृष्ट्वा दावाग्निमुत्थितम् ।

तेनोपयुक्तकरणो ब्रह्म प्राप परं मुनि: ॥१४॥


एवम् वृत्त: वनम् गत्वा
(he) of such conduct, to the forest going
दृष्ट्वा दावाग्निम्-उत्थितम्
saw the forest fire blazing
तेन-उपयुक्त-करण:
by that having consumed his senses
ब्रह्म प्राप परम् मुनि:
Brahman attained, the Absolute, the sage (Prishadhra)

He, Prishadhra, conducted himself in this manner, when he saw the forest fire raging. Consuming his body and senses in that fire, he attained the Absolute Brahman.


कवि: कनीयान् विषयेषु नि:स्पृहो विसृज्य राज्यं सह बन्धुभिर्वनम् ।

निवेश्य चित्ते पुरुषं स्वरोचिषं विवेश कैशोरवया: परं गत: ॥१५॥


कवि: कनीयान्
Kavi, the youngest
विषयेषु नि:स्पृह:
in sense objects unattached,
विसृज्य राज्यम्
giving up the kingdom,
सह बन्धुभि:-वनम्
along with the brothers, in the forest
निवेश्य चित्ते पुरुषम्
placing in the mind The Primary Person
स्व-रोचिषम् विवेश
The Self-effulgent, entered
कैशोर-वया: परम् गत:
in a young age, (to the) The Supreme went

Kavi, the youngest son, unattached to sense objects, relinquished the kingdom, and along with the brothers entered the forest, placing his mind firmly on The Self-effulgent Primary Person, and he at a young age reached The Supreme state.


करूषान्मानवादासन् कारूषा: क्षत्रजातय: ।

उत्तरापथगोप्तारो ब्रह्मण्या धर्मवत्सला: ॥१६॥


करूषात्-मानवात्-आसन्
from Karusha, Manu's son, came
कारूषा: क्षत्र-जातय:
the Kaarushas, the Kshatriya race
उत्तरापथ-गोप्तार:
of the northern regions, the rulers
ब्रह्मण्या: धर्म-वत्सला:
devoted to Braahmanas, righteousness adhering to

From Karusha, Manu's son came Kaarushas the clan of Kshatriyas. They were devoted to the Braahmanas, were lovers of righteousness and became the rulers of the northern regions.


धृष्टाद् धार्ष्टमभूत् क्षत्रं ब्रह्मभूयं गतं क्षितौ ।

नृगस्य वंश: सुमतिर्भूतज्योतिस्ततो वसु: ॥१७॥


धृष्टात् धार्ष्टम्-अभूत् क्षत्रम्
from Dhrishta Dhaarshta was born Kshatriya
ब्रह्मभूयम् गतम् क्षितौ
to Brahmanahood went on the earth
नृगस्य वंश: सुमति:-
Nriga's race was Sumati,
भूतज्योति:-तत: वसु:
from him Bhootajyoti, from him Vasu

From Dhrishta, the Kshatriya race of Dhaarshta was born, who attained Brahmanahood on this earth itself. Nriga's son was Sumati, his son was Bhootajyoti, from him Vasu was born.


वसो: प्रतीकस्तत्पुत्र ओघवानोघवत्पिता ।

कन्या चौघवती नाम सुदर्शन उवाह ताम् ॥१८॥


वसो: प्रतीक:-तत्-पुत्र
Vasu's (son) Prateeka, his son
ओघवान्-ओघवत्-पिता
Oghavaan, (was) Oghavat's father
कन्या च-ओघवती नाम
daughter and Oghavatee named
सुदर्शन: उवाह ताम्
Sudarshana married her

Vasu's son was Prateeka, his son was Oghavaan, who was the father of a son of the same name Oghvat. He also had a daughter named Oghavatee whom Sudarshana married.


चित्रसेनो नरिष्यन्तादृक्षस्तस्य सुतोभवत् ।

तस्य मीढ्वांस्तत: कूर्च इन्द्रसेनस्तु तत्सुत: ॥१९॥


चित्रसेन: नरिष्यन्तात्-
Chitrasena was born from Narishyanta
ऋक्ष:-तस्य सुत:-अभवत्
Riksha his son became
तस्य मीढ्वान्-तत: कूर्च:
his son Meedhawaana, from him Koorcha
इन्द्रसेन:-तु तत्-सुत:
Indrasena indeed was his son

Chitrasena was born from Narishyanta, Riksha became his son, Riksha's son was Meedhawaana from whom Koorcha was born and from him was a son Indrasena.


वीतिहोत्रस्त्विन्द्रसेनात् तस्य सत्यश्रवा अभूत् ।

उरुश्रवा: सुतस्तस्य देवदत्तस्ततोऽभवत् ॥२०॥


वीतिहोत्र:-तु-इन्द्रसेनात्
Veetihotra indeed was (born) from Indrasena
तस्य सत्यश्रवा अभूत्
his Satyashravaa (the son) became
उरुश्रवा: सुत:-तस्य
Urushravaa was son his
देवदत्त:-तत:-अभवत्
Devadattaa from him became

From Indrasena, indeed Veetihotra was born, from Veetihotra Satyashravaa was born, from him Urushravaa became the son, then from him Devadattaa became the son.


ततोऽग्निवेश्यो भगवानग्नि: स्वयमभूत् सुत: ।

कानीन इति विख्यातो जातूकर्ण्यो महानृषी: ॥२१॥


तत:-अग्निवेश्य: भगवान्-
from him, Agniveshya the god
अग्नि: स्वयम्-अभूत् सुत:
fire himself was born as son
कानीन इति विख्यात:
Kaaneena thus the famous
जातूकर्ण्य: महान्-ऋषी:
Jaatukarnya the great sage

From Devadattaa, the son Agnivesha was born who was the fire god himself, Kaaneena, who was well known as the great sage Jaatukarnya.


ततो ब्रह्मकुलं जातमाग्निवेश्यायनं नृप ।

नरिष्यन्तान्वय: प्रोक्तो दिष्टवंशमत: शृणु ॥२२॥


तत: ब्रह्म-कुलम् जातम्-
from him The Braahmana's race, was born
अग्निवेश्यायनम् नृप
Agniveshyaayana, O King!
नरिष्यन्त-अन्वय: प्रोक्त:
of Narishyanta, the progeny is told,
दिष्ट-वंशम्-अत: शृणु
of Dishta's race now hear

O King! From him came forth the race of the Agniveshyaayana Braahmanas. About the progeny of Narishyanta has been told, now hear of the race of Dishta.


नाभागो दिष्टपुत्रोऽन्य: कर्मणा वैश्यतां गत: ।

भलन्दन: सुतस्तस्य वत्सप्रीतिर्भलन्दनात् ॥२३॥


नाभाग: दिष्ट-पुत्र:-अन्य:
Naabhaaga, Dishta's son, the other one,
कर्मणा वैश्यताम् गत:
by activities Vaishya became
भलन्दन: सुत:-तस्य
Bhalandan was son his
वत्सप्रीति:-भलन्दनात्
Vatsapreeti was from Bhalandan

Dishta's son was Naabhaaga, other than the one who became a Vaishya because of his activities, his son was Bhalandan and Bhalandan's son was Vatsapreeti.


वत्सप्रीते: सुत: प्रांशुस्तत्सुतं प्रमतिं विदु: ।

खनित्र: प्रमतेस्तस्माच्चाक्षुषोऽथ विविंशति: ॥२४॥


वत्सप्रीत: सुत: प्रांशु:-
Vatsapreeta was son of Praanshu
तत्-सुतम् प्रमतिम् विदु:
his son Pramati was known as
खनित्र: प्रमते:-तस्मात्-
Khanitra was Pramati's (son), from him
चाक्षुष: अथ विविंशति:
Chaakshusha, then (from him) Vivinshati

Vatsapreeta was the son of Praanshu, his son was known as Pramati, Pramati's son was Khanitra, from him was born Chaakshusha, then, from him Vivinshati was born.


विविंशतिसुतो रम्भ: खनिनेत्रोऽस्य धार्मिक: ।

करन्धमो महाराज तस्यासीदात्मजो नृप ॥२५॥


विविंशति-सुत: रम्भ:
Vivinshati's son was Rambha
खनिनेत्र:-अस्य धार्मिक:
Khaninetra his the pious
करन्धम: महाराज
Karandhama, O Great king!
तस्य-आसीत्-आत्मज: नृप
his was the son O King!

O Great king! Vivinshati's son was Rambha, his son was the pious Khaninetra, and his son was Karandhama O King!


तस्यावीक्षित् सुतो यस्य मरुत्तश्चक्रवर्त्यभूत् ।

संवर्तोऽयाजयद् यं वै महायोग्यङ्गिर:सुत: ॥२६॥


तस्य-अवीक्षित् सुत: यस्य
his Aveekshita the son, whose
मरुत्त:-चक्रवर्ती-अभूत्
Marutta emperor became
संवर्त:-अयाजयद् यम् वै
Samvarta made sacrifice by whom
महायोगी-अङ्गिर:सुत:
the great Yogi, Angiraa's son

His son was Aveekshita, whose son Marutta became an emperor, and whom Samvarta, the great Yogi Angeera's son, made to perform the sacrifice.


मरुत्तस्य यथा यज्ञो न तथान्यस्य कश्चन ।

सर्वं हिरण्मयं त्वासीद् यत् किञ्चिच्चास्य शोभनम् ॥२७॥


मरुत्तस्य यथा यज्ञ:
of Marutta such as the sacrifice
न तथा-अन्यस्य कश्चन
not like that of anyone else
सर्वम्-हिरण्मयम्
everything was golden indeed was
यत् किञ्चित्-च-अस्य शोभनम्
whatever else and was remarkable

No one else's sacrifice was as grand as that of Marutta. Where everything was golden and whatever else was there was remarkably beautiful.


अमाद्यदिन्द्र: सोमेन दक्षिणाभिर्द्विजातय: ।

मरुत: परिवेष्टारो विश्वेदेवा: सभासद: ॥२८॥


अमाद्यत्-इन्द्र: सोमेन
intoxicated was Indra by Soma
दक्षिणाभि:-द्विजातय:
by monetary gifts the Braahmanas
मरुत: परिवेष्टार:
the Marutas were (food) service men
विश्वेदेवा: सभासद:
the Vishvedevas were the assembly members

In that sacrifice, Indra was intoxicated by the Soma juice, and the Braahmanas by monetary gifts. The Marutas were the food servers and the Vishvedevas were the members of the assembly.


मरुत्तस्य दम: पुत्रस्तस्यासीद् राज्यवर्धन: ।

सुधृतिस्तत्सुतो जज्ञे सौधृतेयो नर: सुत: ॥२९॥


मरुत्तस्य दम: पुत्र:-
of Marutta Dama was the son
तस्य-आसीत् राज्यवर्धन:
his was Raajyavardhana
सुधृति:-तत्-सुत: जज्ञे
Sudhriti his son was born
सौधृतेय: नर: सुत:
of Sudhriti Nara was the son

Dama was Marutta's son, of Dama the son was Raajyavardhana, to him a son was born named Sudhriti, Sudhriti's son was Nara.


तत्सुत: केवलस्तस्माद् बन्धुमान् वेगवांतत: ।

बन्धुस्तस्याभवद् यस्य तृणबिन्दुर्महीपति: ॥३०॥


तत्-सुत: केवल:-तस्मात्-
his son was Kevala, from him
बन्धुमान् वेगवान्-तत:
Bandhumaana, Vegavaana from him
बन्धु:-तस्य-अभवद्
Bandhu his was born
यस्य तृणबिन्दु:-महीपति:
whose Trinabindu was the earth's ruler

His son was Kevala, from him Bandhumaana was born, from him Vegavaana was born and from him Bandhu was born whose son Trinabindu was the ruler of the earth.


तं भेजेऽलम्बुषा देवी भजनीयगुणालयम् ।

वराप्सरा यत: पुत्रा: कन्या चेडविडाभवत् ॥३१॥


तम् भेजे-अलम्बुषा देवी
him married, Alambushaa the heavenly
भजनीय-गुण-आलयम्
worthy of praise qualities the repository
वरा-अप्सरा यत: पुत्रा:
the foremost celestial nymph, from whom sons
कन्या च-इडविडा-अभवत्
daughter and Idavidaa were born

Him, who was worthy of praise and was a depository of qualities, married the heavenly Alambushaa, the foremost of the celestial nymphs, from whom sons were born and daughter Idavidaa was born.


तस्यामुत्पादयामास विश्रवा धनदं सुतम् ।

प्रादाय विद्यां परमामृषियोगेश्वरात् पितु: ॥३२॥


तस्याम्-उत्पादयामास
from her produced
विश्रवा धनदम् सुतम्
Vishravaa the riches Bestower (Kuber) the son
प्रादाय विद्याम् परमाम्-
having attained the knowledge the highest,
ऋषि-योगेश्वरात् पितु:
from the sage the foremost in yoga, the father

The sage Vishravaa produced from her the riches Bestower son Kuber, after having received the highest knowledge from his father sage Pulastya, the foremost in Yoga.


विशाल: शून्यबन्धुश्च धूम्रकेतुश्च तत्सुता: ।

विशालो वंशकृद् राजा वैशालीं निर्ममे पुरीम् ॥३३॥


विशाल:-शून्यबन्धु:-च
Vishaalaa, Shoonyabandhu,
धूम्रकेतु:-च तत्-सुता:
Dhoomraketu and were his sons
विशाल: वंशकृत् राजा
Vishal was of the race the promoter, the king,
वैशालीम् निर्ममे पुरीम्
Vaishalee built the city

His sons were Vishaalaa, Shoonyabandhu, and Dhoomraketu. Vishaalaa continued the race and became the king who built the city of Vaishaalee.


हेमचन्द्र: सुतस्तस्य धूम्राक्षस्तस्य चात्मज: ।

तत्पुत्रात् संयमादासीत् कृशाश्व: सहदेवज: ॥३४॥


हेमचन्द्र: सुत:-तस्य
Hemachandra son his
धूम्राक्ष:-तस्य च-आत्मज:
Dhumraaksha his and the son
तत्-पुत्रात् संयमात्-आसीत्
from his son Samyama was
कृशाश्व: सह-देवज:
Krishaashva along with Devaja

His son was Hemachandra, and his son was Dhumraaksha, from his son Samyama, Krishaashva along with Devaja were born.


कृशाश्वात् सोमदत्तोऽभूद् योऽश्वमेधैरिडस्पतिम् ।

इष्ट्वा पुरुषमापाग्र्यां गतिं योगेश्वराश्रित: ॥३५॥


कृशाश्वात् सोमदत्त:-अभूत्-
from Krishaashva Somadutta was born
य:-अश्वमेधै:-इडस्पतिम्
who by Ashvamedha, the lord of sacrifices
इष्ट्वा पुरुषम्-आप-अग्र्याम्
worshipped The Person, attained the highest
गतिम् योगेश्वर-आश्रित:
state, to the Lord of Yoga surrendering

Somadutta was born from Krishaashva, who by performing the Ashvamedha sacrifices propitiated The Primary Person and surrendering to the Lord of sacrifices, attained the highest state.


सौमदत्तिस्तु सुमतिस्तत्सुतो जनमेजय: ।

एते वैशालभूपालास्तृणबिन्दोर्यशोधरा: ॥३६॥


सौमदत्ति:-तु सुमति:-
of Somadutta indeed was Sumati
तत्-सुत: जनमेजय:
his son Janamejaya
एते वैशाल-भूपाला:-
these of Vaishaalee the kings
तृणबिन्दो:-यश:-धरा:
of Trinabindu's glory preserved

Sumati was the son of Somadutta, Sumati's son was Janamejaya. These were the kings of Vaishaalee, who preserved the glory of Trinabindu.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां नवमे स्कन्धे द्वितीय: अध्याय: ॥२॥


Thus ends the second discourse in Book Nine of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
