श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
शर्यातिर्मानवो राजा ब्रह्मिष्ठ: स बभूव ह ।

यो वा अङ्गिरसां सत्रे द्वितीयमह ऊचिवान् ॥१॥


शर्याति:-मानव: राजा
Sharyaatee, Manu's son, the king
ब्रह्मिष्ठ: स: बभूव ह
knower of Brahman, he became it is said
य: वा अङ्गिरसाम् सत्रे
who indeed in the Angirasa's sacrifice,
द्वितीयम्-अह ऊचिवान्
on the second day advised

Manu's son, king Sharyaatee, who it is said became the knower of Brahman, the highest Truth, on the second day of the sacrifice had advised the course of rituals in the sacrifice of the Angeerasa.


सुकन्या नाम तस्यासीत् कन्या कमललोचना ।

तया सार्धं वनगतो ह्यगमच्च्यवनाश्रमम् ॥२॥


सुकन्या नाम तस्य-आसीत्
Sukanyaa named his was
कन्या कमल-लोचना
daughter lotus eyed
तया सार्धम् वन-गत: हि-
her along with to the forest having gone indeed
अगमत्-च्यवन-आश्रमम्
went to Chyavana's hermitage

He had a daughter with beautiful lotus eyes, named Sukanyaa. Having gone to the forest with her, he went to the hermitage of sage Chyavana.


सा सखीभि: परिवृता विचिन्वत्यङ्घ्रिपान् वने ।

वल्मीकरन्ध्रे ददृशे खद्योते इव ज्योतिषी ॥३॥


सा सखीभि: परिवृता
she with girl friends surrounded
विचिन्वती-अङ्घ्रिपान् वने
admiring the trees in the forest
वल्मीक-रन्ध्रे ददृशे
in the ant-hill hole saw
खद्योते इव ज्योतिषी
two fire flies like two lights

Surrounded by her girl friends, as she roamed about the forest admiring the trees, she saw a pair of fire flies like two lights in the hole of the ant-hill.


ते दैवचोदिता बाला ज्योतिषी कण्टकेन वै ।

अविध्यन्मुग्धभावेन सुस्रावासृक् ततो बहु ॥४॥


ते दैवचोदिता बाला
those, by the fate impelled young girl
ज्योतिषी कण्टकेन
the lights by a thorn
वै अविध्यन्-मुग्ध-भावेन
indeed pierced with childish innocence
सुस्राव-असृक् तत: बहु
flowed blood a good deal

Impelled by fate, the young girl in childish innocence, pierced the two lights with a thorn, indeed. A good deal of blood flowed from them.


शकृन्मूत्रनिरोधोऽभूत् सैनिकानां च तत्क्षणात् ।

राजर्षिस्तमुपालक्ष्य पुरुषान् विस्मितोऽब्रवीत् ॥५॥


शकृत्-मूत्र-निरोध:-अभूत्
of stool urine retention became
सैनिकानाम् च तत्-क्षणात्
of the soldiers and from that moment
राजर्षि:-तम्-उपालक्ष्य
the royal sage that noticing
पुरुषान् विस्मित:-अब्रवीत्
to the people surprised said

From that moment, there was stool and urine retention of the soldiers. Noticing this, the surprised royal sage said this to his people,…..


अप्यभद्रं न युष्माभिर्भार्गवस्य विचेष्टितम् ।

व्यक्तं केनापि नस्तस्य कृतमाश्रमदूषणम् ॥६॥


अपि-अभद्रम् न युष्माभि:-
also evil is not by you all
भार्गवस्य विचेष्टितम्
of the son of Bhrigu (Chyavana) done
व्यक्तम् केन-अपि न:-तस्य
it is clear some one even of us his
कृतम्-आश्रम-दूषणम्
has rendered the hermitage impure

'Has any of you done some evil towards the son of Bhrigu, Chyavana. It is clear that some one of us has rendered the hermitage impure.'


सुकन्या प्राह पितरं भीता किञ्चित् कृतं मया ।

द्वे ज्योतिषी अजानन्त्या निर्भिन्ने कण्टकेन वै ॥७॥


सुकन्या प्राह पितरम् भीता
Sukanyaa said to the father with fear
किञ्चित् कृतम् मया
something is done by me
द्वे ज्योतिषी अजानन्त्या
two lights unknowingly
निर्भिन्ने कण्टकेन वै
are pierced with a thorn indeed

Sukanyaa, with fear, said to her father, 'Some thing has been done by me, unknowingly two lights were pierced with a thorn, indeed'.


दुहितुस्तद् वच: श्रुत्वा शर्यातिर्जातसाध्वस: ।

मुनिं प्रसादयामास वल्मीकान्तर्हितं शनै: ॥८॥


दुहितु:-तत् वच: श्रुत्वा
of the daughter those words hearing
शर्याति:-जात-साध्वस:
Sharyaatee overcome with fear
मुनिम् प्रसादयामास
the sage propitiated
वल्मीक-अन्तर्हितम् शनै:
in the ant-hill covered gradually

Sharyaatee was overcome with fear on hearing these words of his daughter. He gradually propitiated the sage covered in the ant-hill.


तदभिप्रायमाज्ञाय प्रादाद् दुहितरं मुने: ।

कृच्छ्रान्मुक्तस्तमामन्त्र्य पुरं प्रायात् समाहित: ॥९॥


तत्-अभिप्रायम्-आज्ञाय
his indication understanding,
प्रादाद् दुहितरम् मुने:
gave the daughter to the sage
कृच्छ्रात्-मुक्त: तम्-आमन्त्र्य
easily saved, by his permission
पुरम् प्रायात् समाहित:
went to the city carefully

Understanding the indication of the sage, he gave his daughter to him, and with his permission carefully returned to the city.


सुकन्या च्यवनं प्राप्य पतिं परमकोपनम् ।

प्रीणयामास चित्तज्ञा अप्रमत्तानुवृत्तिभि: ॥१०॥


सुकन्या च्यवनम् प्राप्य
Sukanyaa, Chyavana having obtained
पतिम् परम-कोपनम्
the husband short tempered
प्रीणयामास चित्तज्ञा
pleased him, she, the knower of mind
अप्रमत्त-अनुवृत्तिभि:
with unfaltering service

Sukanyaa having obtained Chyavana as a husband, who was short tempered, she, the knower of minds pleased him by her unfaltering service.


कस्यचित् त्वथ कालस्य नासत्यावाश्रमागतौ ।

तौ पूजयित्वा प्रोवाच वयो मे दत्तमीश्वरौ ॥११॥


कस्यचित् तु-अथ कालस्य
some of its indeed after that of time
नासत्यौ-आश्रम-आगतौ
the Ashwini Kumaaras to the hermitage came
तौ पूजयित्वा प्रोवाच
them respectfully greeting said,
वय: मे दत्तम्-ईश्वरौ
Youth to me to give, capable you are

After some of its time having passed, the two Ashwini Kumaaras came to the hermitage. After respectfully greeting them, the sage said, 'Do give me youth, as you are capable to do so.'


ग्रहं ग्रहीष्ये सोमस्य यज्ञे वामप्यसोमपो: ।

क्रियतां मे वयो रूपं प्रमदानां यदीप्सितम् ॥१२॥


ग्रहम् ग्रहीष्ये सोमस्य
part will make to be given of the Soma (juice)
यज्ञे वाम्-अपि-असोमपो:
in the sacrifice, to you two also, not entitled
क्रियताम् मे वय: रूपम्
do such my age and looks
प्रमदानाम् यत्-ईप्सितम्
by the young women which is coveted

I will make you have a part of the Soma juice in the sacrifice even though you are not entitled to it. Make my age and looks such which is coveted by the young women.


बाढमित्यूचतुर्विप्रमभिनन्द्य भिषक्तमौ ।

निमज्जतां भवानस्मिन् ह्रदे सिद्धविनिर्मिते ॥१३॥


बाढम्-इति-ऊचतु:-विप्रम्-
Alright, thus saying to the Braahmana
अभिनन्द्य भिषक्तमौ
greeting, the foremost two physicians
निमज्जताम् भवान्-अस्मिन्
plunge you in this
ह्रदे सिद्ध-विनिर्मिते
pond, by the Siddhas created

'Alright', thus saying and greeting the Braahmana, the two foremost physicians said, 'Plunge you in this pond created by the Siddhaas.'


इत्युक्त्वा जरया ग्रस्तदेहो धमनिसन्तत: ।

ह्रदं प्रवेशितोऽश्विभ्यां वलीपलितविप्रिय: ॥१४॥


इति-उक्त्वा जरया ग्रस्त-
thus having said by old age overcome
देह: धमनि-सन्तत:
body, veins prominent
ह्रदम् प्रवेशित:-अश्विभ्याम्
in the pond was made to enter by the two Ashwinis
वली-पलित-विप्रिय:
by wrinkle and white hair unappealing

Thus saying, he, who was unappealing by his body overcome by old age, veins prominent, and wrinkles and white hair, was made to enter the pond by the two Ashwini Kumaaras.


पुरुषास्त्रय उत्तस्थुरपीच्या वनिताप्रिया: ।

पद्मस्रज: कुण्डलिनस्तुल्यरूपा: सुवासस: ॥१५॥


पुरुषा:-त्रय: उत्तस्थु:-
men three emerged
अपीच्या: वनिता-प्रिया:
good looking to the women captivating
पद्म-स्रज: कुण्डलिन:-
lotus garlanded with ear rings
तुल्य-रूपा: सुवासस:
alike in appearance well dressed

From that pond there emerged three good looking men of the same appearance, captivating to the women, adorned with lotus garlands and ear-rings, and well-dressed.


तान् निरीक्ष्य वरारोहा सरूपान् सूर्यवर्चस: ।

अजानती पतिं साध्वी अश्विनौ शरणं ययौ ॥१६॥


तान् निरीक्ष्य वरारोहा
them seeing, the beautiful limbed,
सरूपान् सूर्य-वर्चस:
of same appearance, of sun like lustre
अजानती पतिम् साध्वी
not knowing her husband, the pious woman
अश्विनौ शरणम् ययौ
Ashwinis rescue sought

The beautiful limbed pious woman, seeing them of same appearance with a sun like lustre, and not knowing them to be her husband, sought the rescue of the Ashwini Kumaaras.


दर्शयित्वा पतिं तस्यै पातिव्रत्येन तोषितौ ।

ऋषिमामन्त्र्य ययतुर्विमानेन त्रिविष्टपम् ॥१७॥


दर्शयित्वा पतिम् तस्यै
pointing out husband to her
पातिव्रत्येन तोषितौ
by her fidelity satisfied
ऋषिम्-आमन्त्र्य ययतु:-
the sage taking leave of returned
विमानेन त्रिविष्टपम्
by Ariel cars to the heaven

They pointed out her husband to her and were satisfied by her fidelity. Then, taking leave of the sage, they returned to the heaven in the Ariel cars.


यक्ष्यमाणोऽथ शर्यातिश्च्यवनस्याश्रमं गत: ।

ददर्श दुहितु: पार्श्वे पुरुषं सूर्यवर्चसम् ॥१८॥


यक्ष्यमाण:-अथ शर्याति:-
wanting to perform a sacrifice, then, Sharyaatee
च्यवनस्य-आश्रमम् गत:
to Chyavana's hermitage went
ददर्श दुहितु: पार्श्वे
saw his daughter near
पुरुषम् सूर्य-वर्चसम्
a man of sun like effulgence

Some time afterwards, King Sharyaatee, with the intention of performing a sacrifice went to the hermitage of sage Chyavana. There he saw his daughter with a man who had a sun like effulgence.


राजा दुहितरं प्राह कृतपादाभिवन्दनाम् ।

आशिषश्चाप्रयुञ्जानो नातिप्रीतमना इव ॥१९॥


राजा दुहितरम् प्राह
the king to the daughter said
कृत-पाद-अभिवन्दनाम्
who had in the feet bowed
आशिष:-च-अप्रयुञ्जान:
blessings and not pronouncing
न-अतिप्रीतमना इव
not very pleased like

The king said to the daughter who had bowed in his feet, not pronouncing any blessings and not very pleased either,…..


चिकीर्षितं ते किमिदं पतिस्त्वया प्रलम्भितो लोकनमस्कृतो मुनि: ।

यत् त्वं जराग्रस्तमसत्यसम्मतं विहाय जारं भजसेऽमुमध्वगम् ॥२०॥


चिकीर्षितम् ते किम्-इद्म्
desire you what is this
पति:-त्वया प्रलम्म्भित:
husband by you betrayed
लोक-नमस्कृत: मुनि:
by the world adored the sage
यत् त्वम् जरा-ग्रस्तम्-
that you by old age overcome
असत्य-सम्मतम् विहाय
false considering abandoning,
जारम् भजसे-अमुम्-अध्वगम्
other man serve this vagabond

What is it that you desire to accomplish? The sage who is adored by the world, your husband, you have betrayed, who being overcome with old age you consider to be useless and so abandoning him you serve this other man, a vagabond.


कथं मतिस्तेऽवगतान्यथा सतां कुलप्रसूते कुलदूषणं त्विदम् ।

बिभर्षि जारं यदपत्रपा कुलं पितुश्च भर्तुश्च नयस्यधस्तम: ॥२१॥


कथम् मति:-ते-अवगता-
how reason yours has become lowly
अन्यथा सताम् कुल-प्रसूते
otherwise, in noble race born
कुल-दूषणम् तु-इदम्
family demeaning indeed this
बिभर्षि जारम् यत्-अत्रपा
serves a paramour, in that, shamelessly
कुलम् पितु:-च-भर्तु:-च
the family of father and of husband
नयसि-अध:-तम:
hurl into dark hell

How has your reason become lowly, otherwise, you born of a noble race, indeed this is very demeaning to the family, in that you serve a paramour and shamelessly hurl the family of your father and of your husband in dark hell.


एवं ब्रुवाणं पितरं स्मयमाना शुचिस्मिता ।

उवाच तात जामाता तवैष भृगुनन्दन: ॥२२॥


एवम् ब्रुवाणम् पितरम्
in this manner saying to the father
स्मयमाना शुचिस्मिता
smilingly, she of a beautiful smile
उवाच तात जामाता
said, 'father, son-in-law
तव-एष भृगुनन्दन:
your this, the delight of sage Bhrigu

To the father who was saying thus, she of the beautiful smile, smilingly said, "O father! this is your son-in-law, the delight of sage Bhrigu.'


शशंस पित्रे तत् सर्वं वयोरूपाभिलम्भनम् ।

विस्मित: परमप्रीतस्तनयां परिषस्वजे ॥२३॥


शशंस पित्रे तत् सर्वम्
related to the father that all
वय:-रूप-अभिलम्भनम्
of age and appearance acquirement
विस्मित: परम-प्रीत:-
surprised and very happy
तनयाम् परिषस्वजे
daughter embraced

She related to her father all about the acquirement of the age and appearance. Very much surprised and happy, he hugged his daughter.


सोमेन याजयन् वीरं ग्रहं सोमस्य चाग्रहीत् ।

असोमपोरप्यश्विनोश्च्यवन: स्वेन तेजसा ॥२४॥


सोमेन याजयन् वीरम्
the Soma (juice) getting by sacrifice, the hero king
ग्रहम् सोमस्य च-अग्रहीत्
part of the Soma and made to be given
असोमप:-अपि-अश्विनो:-
to the unentitled for Soma even the Ashwinis,
च्यवन: स्वेन तेजसा
Chyavana, by his own power

When Chyavana was getting the Soma juice sacrifice done by the valorous king Sharyaatee, by his own power he also made a portion of the soma juice to be given to the Ashwini Kumaaras even though they were not entitled to drink it.


हन्तुं तमाददे वज्रं ग्रहं सद्योमन्युरमर्षित: ।

सवज्रं स्तम्भयामास भुजमिन्द्रस्य भार्गव: ॥२५॥


हन्तुम् तम्-आददे वज्रम्
to kill him, took up the thunderbolt
सद्य:-मन्यु:-अमर्षित:
short tempered intolerant
सवज्रम् स्तम्भयामास
with the thunderbolt paralyzed
भुजम्-इन्द्रस्य भार्गव:
the arm of Indra, the son of Bhrigu

The short tempered intolerant Indra took up the thunderbolt to kill him, but sage Bhrigu's son, Chyavana, paralyzed the arm of Indra with the thunderbolt.


अन्वजानंस्तत: सर्वे ग्रहं सोमस्य चाश्विनो: ।

भिषजाविति यत् पूर्वं सोमाहुत्या बहिष्कृतौ ॥२६॥


अन्वजानन्-तत: सर्वे
came to know then all
ग्रहम् सोमस्य च-अश्विनो:
part of Soma and to the Ashwinis
भिषजौ-इति यत् पूर्वम्
physicians, thus, which before
सोम-आहुत्या बहिष्कृतौ
from Soma sacrifice were excluded

From then on all the gods consented to a part of the Soma to the Ashwinis, before that, they, known to be physicians were excluded from Soma sacrifice.


उत्तानबर्हिरानर्तो भूरिषेण इति त्रय: ।

शर्यातेरभवन् पुत्रा आनर्ताद् रेवतोऽभवत् ॥२७॥


उत्तानबर्हि:-आनर्त:
Uttaanabarhi, Aanarta,
भूरिषेण इति त्रय:
Bhoorishena thus three
शर्याते:-अभवन् पुत्रा:
of Sharyaatee were sons
आनर्ताद् रेवत:-अभवत्
from Aanarta Rewata was born

Sharyaatee had three sons, Uttaanabarhi, Aanarta, and Bhoorishena. Rewata was born to Aanarta.


सोऽन्त:समुद्रे नगरीं विनिर्माय कुशस्थलीम् ।

आस्थितोऽभुङ्क्त विषयानानर्तादीनरिन्दम ॥२८॥


स:-अन्त:-समुद्रे नगरीम्
he, in the middle of the ocean a city
विनिर्माय कुशस्थलीम्
having built Kushasthali
आस्थित:-अभुङ्क्त विषयान्-
residing there ruled the territory
आनर्त-आदीन्-अरिन्दम
of Aanarta and others, O Subduer of foes!

O subduer of foes! he, having built a city, Kushasthali in the middle of the ocean, resided there and ruled the territories of Aanarta and others.


तस्य पुत्रशतं जज्ञे ककुद्मिज्येष्ठमुत्तमम् ।

ककुद्मी रेवतीं कन्यां स्वामादाय विभुं गत: ॥२९॥


तस्य पुत्र-शतम् जज्ञे
his sons hundred were born
ककुद्मि-ज्येष्ठम्-उत्तमम्
Kakudmee the eldest excellent
ककुद्मी रेवतीम् कन्याम्
Kakudmee, Revati the daughter
स्वाम्-आदाय विभुम् गत:
his taking along, to Brahmaa went

To him a hundred sons were born, of them Kakudmee was the best and the eldest. Kakudmee took his own daughter Revati and went to Brahmaa.


कन्यावरं परिप्रष्टुं ब्रह्मलोकमपावृतम् ।

आवर्तमाने गान्धर्वे स्थितोऽलब्धक्षण: क्षणम् ॥३०॥


कन्या-वरम् परिप्रष्टुम्
for the daughter, a match to ask for
ब्रह्म-लोकम्-अपावृतम्
to Brahma's realm uncovered (by Rajas and Tamas)
आवर्तमाने गान्धर्वे स्थित:-
for the going on of music tarried,
अलब्ध-क्षण: क्षणम्
not having got an opportune moment, a moment

He went to Brahma's realm, uncovered by Rajas and Tamas, to ask Brahmaa for a match for his daughter. For the music going on there, he did not get an opportunate moment, and so he waited for a moment.


तदन्त आद्यमानम्य स्वाभिप्रायं न्यवेदयत् ।

तच्छ्रुत्वा भगवान् ब्रह्मा प्रहस्य तमुवाच ह ॥३१॥


तत्-अन्त आद्यम्-आनम्य
(when) that ended, to The first born, bowing
स्व-अभिप्रायम् न्यवेदयत्
his own intention presented
तत्-श्रुत्वा भगवान् ब्रह्मा
that hearing the glorious Brahmaa
प्रहस्य तम्-उवाच ह
laughingly to him said indeed

After the end of the music, he bowed to the first born Brahmaa, and presented his intention. Hearing that, indeed Brahmaa laughingly said to him…..


अहो राजन् निरुद्धास्ते कालेन हृदि ये कृता: ।

तत्पुत्रपौत्रनप्तृणां गोत्राणि च न शृण्महे ॥३२॥


अहो राजन् निरुद्धा:-ते
O King! have been swept they
कालेन हृदि ये कृता:
by Time, in heart who (you may have) thought of
तत्-पुत्र-पौत्र-नप्तृणाम्
their sons, grand sons, great grand sons'
गोत्राणि च न शृण्महे
race and do not hear

O King! those kings of whom you may have thought of, have all been swept away by Time. We do not even hear about their sons, grand sons or great grand sons or of their races.


कालोऽभियातस्त्रिणवचतुर्युगविकल्पित: ।

तद् गच्छ देवदेवांशो बलदेवो महाबल: ॥३३॥


काल:-अभियात:-त्रि-नव-
Time has passed, three nines (twenty seven)
चतुर्युग विकल्पित:
in four Yugas comprising of
तत् गच्छ देव-देवांश:
so go (to the earth), of Vishnu's part incarnation
बलदेव: महाबल:
Baladeva the mighty

Twenty nine of the Yugas comprising of four yugas each, have passed. So go now to the earth where there is the mighty Baladeva, the part incarnation of Lord Vishnu.


कन्यारत्नमिदं राजन् नररत्नाय देहि भो: ।

भुवो भारावताराय भगवान् भूतभावन: ॥३४॥


कन्या-रत्नम्-इदम् राजन्
girl jewel this, O King! (Kakudmee)
नर-रत्नाय देहि भो:
to the man jewel should give O!
भुव: भार-अवताराय
for the earth's burden (to descent), has descended
भगवान् भूत-भावन:
the Almighty, of the created beings' The Protector

'O King Kakudmee! Do give this jewel of a girl to the jewel among men, the Almighty Lord, the Protector of all created beings, Who has descended to ease the burden of the earth.


अवतीर्णो निजांशेन पुण्यश्रवणकीर्तन: ।

इत्यादिष्टोऽभिवन्द्याजं नृप: स्वपुरमागत: ॥३५॥

त्यक्तं पुण्यजनत्रासाद् भ्रातृभिर्दिक्ष्ववस्थितै: ॥35॥


अवतीर्ण: निज-अंशेन
has descended with own part manifestation
पुण्य-श्रवण-कीर्तन:
sanctifying is the hearing and chanting of His names
इति-आदिष्ट:-अभिवन्द्य-अजम्
thus instructed, bowing to Brahmaa
नृप: स्व-पुरम्-आगत:
the king to his own city returned
त्यक्तम् पुण्य-जन-त्रासादत्
deserted for the Yakshas fear
भ्रातृभि:-दिक्षु-अवस्थितै:
by the brothers, in directions staying

He, Vishnu the chanting and hearing of Whose name is sanctifying, has descended on the earth with his own part incarnation, Balaraama. Thus instructed the king returned to his own city, which was deserted for the fear of the Yakshas, by the brothers who were staying here and there in different directions.


सुतां दत्त्वानवद्याङ्गीं बलाय बलशालिने ।

बदर्याख्यं गतो राजा तप्तुं नारायणाश्रमम् ॥३६॥


सुताम् दत्त्वा-अनवद्य-अङ्गीम्
daughter giving away, her, of fault-less limbs
बलाय बलशालिने
to Bala, the mighty
बदरी-आख्यम् गत: राजा
to Badaree named went the king
तप्तुम् नारायण-आश्रमम्
to practice austerities, to Naarayana's hermitage

The king having given away his daughter of fault-less limbs to Balaraama, the mighty, went away to the hermitage of sage Naaraayana, known as Badrikaashrama.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां नवमे स्कन्धे तृतीय: अध्याय: ॥३॥


Thus ends the third discourse, in Book Nine of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
