श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
नाभागो नभगापत्यं यं ततं भ्रातर: कविम् ।
यविष्ठं व्यभजन् दायं ब्रह्मचारिणमागतम् ॥१॥
नाभाग: नभग-अपत्यम्
Naabhaaga, Nabhaga's son
यम् ततम् भ्रातर: कविम्
whom the father, the brothers to the learned
यविष्ठम् व्यभजन् दायम्
youngest, in dividing ( the property) the share
ब्रह्मचारिणम्-आगतम्
to the celibate who had come
Naabhaaga was the son of Nabhaga. To him the learned and celibate, his brothers gave as a share of the property their father, when he came back from his preceptor's hermitage.
भ्रातरोऽभाङ्क्त किं मह्यं भजाम पितरं तव ।
त्वां ममार्यास्तताभाङ्क्षुर्मा पुत्रक तदादृथा: ॥२॥
भ्रातर:-अभाङ्क्त किम् मह्यम्
’Brothers! share what is for me'
भजाम पितरम् तव
'shared father for you'
त्वाम् मम-आर्या:-तत-अभाङ्क्षु:-
'You for me the gentlemen, O father! have shared'
मा पुत्रक तत्-आदृथा:
'Do not O dear son that give heed to'
'Brothers! What is the share for me?' 'Father is your share'. 'O Father! The gentlemen have shared you to me.' 'Do not, O dear son give heed to that.'
इमे अङ्गिरस: सत्रमासतेऽद्य सुमेधस: ।
षष्ठं षष्ठमुपेत्याह: कवे मुह्यन्ति कर्मणि ॥३॥
इमे अङ्गिरस: सत्रम्-
these of Angira's clan
आसते-अद्य सुमेधस:
sacrifice are performing now, the very intelligent
षष्ठम् षष्ठम्-उपेत्य-अह:
every sixth approaching day
कवे मुह्यन्ति कर्मणि
O learned one! they commit mistake in the rituals
'These very intelligent Braahmanas of the Angira's clan are presently performing a sacrifice. O learned one! On every approaching sixth day they commit mistakes in the course of rituals.'
तांस्त्वं शंसय सूक्ते द्वे वैश्वदेवे महात्मन: ।
ते स्वर्यन्तो धनं सत्रपरिशेषितमात्मन: ॥४॥
तान्-त्वम् शंसय सूक्ते द्वे
them you teach Sooktas two
वैश्वदेवे महात्मन:
of the Vishvedevas, the great souls
ते स्वर्यन्त: धनम्
they when returning to heaven, the riches
सत्र-परिशेषितम्-आत्मन:
of the sacrifice left over, theirs
To them, the great souls, you teach some two Sooktas of the Vishvedevas. They, when returning to the heaven, will give you the riches left over of their sacrifice.
दास्यन्ति तेऽथ तान् गच्छ तथा स कृतवान् यथा ।
तस्मै दत्त्वा ययु: स्वर्गं ते सत्रपरिशेषितम् ॥५॥
दास्यन्ति ते-अथ तान् गच्छ
will give to you, then, to them go
तथा स: कृतवान् यथा
like that he did, so that
तस्मै दत्त्वा ययु: स्वर्गम्
to him gave, went to the heaven
ते सत्र-परिशेषितम्
they, of the sacrifice the left over
….will give to you. Then go to them.' He did like he was told, so they gave to him the riches left over of the sacrifice and went to the heaven.
तं कश्चित् स्वीकरिष्यन्तं पुरुष: कृष्णदर्शन: ।
उवाचोत्तरतोऽभ्येत्य ममेदं वास्तुकं वसु ॥६॥
तम् कश्चित् स्वीकरिष्यन्तम्
him, some, as he was accepting
पुरुष: कृष्ण-दर्शन:
person of dark colour
उवाच-उत्तरत:-अभ्येत्य
said from north coming
मम-इदम् वास्तुकम् वसु
'my this left over wealth (is)'
To him, who was collecting the wealth, a person of dark complexion came from the north and said, 'This left over wealth is mine.'
ममेदमृषिभिर्दत्तमिति तर्हि स्म मानव: ।
स्यान्नौ ते पितरि प्रश्न: पृष्टवान् पितरं तथा ॥७॥
मम्-इदम्-ऋषिभि:-दत्तम्-
'my this, by the sages given'
इति तर्हि स्म मानव:
thus, then that man
स्यात्-नौ ते पितरि प्रश्न:
'may be for both, to your father ask'
पृष्टवान् पितरम् तथा
asked the father then
Naabhaaga said, 'This is mine, given to me by the sages.' Then the dark man said, 'May be it is for both of us, ask your father'. Then they asked the father.
यज्ञवास्तुगतं सर्वमुच्छिष्टमृषय: क्वचित् ।
चक्रुर्विभागं रुद्राय स देव: सर्वमर्हति ॥८॥
यज्ञ-वास्तु-गतम् सर्वम्-
the sacrifice ground having all
उच्छिष्टम्-ऋषय: क्वचित्
left-over the sages at some time
चक्रु:-विभागम् रुद्राय
did the share for Rudra,
स: देव: सर्वम्-अर्हति
He the god all deserves
'At one time, the sages declared all the left-over on the ground of the sacrifice, to be the share of Rudra, therefore, the god deserves all this.'
नाभागस्तं प्रणम्याह तवेश किल वास्तुकम् ।
इत्याह मे पिता ब्रह्मञ्छिरसा त्वां प्रसादये ॥९॥
नाभाग:-तम् प्रणम्य-आह
Naabhaaga to him bowing down said -
तव-ईश किल वास्तुकम्
'Yours O lord! Undoubtedly, on sacrificial ground
इति-आह मे पिता ब्रह्मन्-
this (is) said my father, O Holy One!
शिरसा त्वाम् प्रसादये
With my head (bowed) you I pray for grace'
Naabhaaga, bowing down his head, said to him, 'O lord! Undoubtedly, all this on the sacrificial ground is yours, said my father. I pray for your grace with my head bowed.'
यत् ते पितावदद् धर्मं त्वं च सत्यं प्रभाषसे ।
ददामि ते मन्त्रदृशे ज्ञानं ब्रह्म सनातनम् ॥१०॥
यत् ते पिता-अवदद् धर्मम्
'What your father said is right
त्वम् च सत्यम् प्रभाषसे
you and truth speak
ददामि ते मन्त्रदृशे
I give to you, O knower of the Mantras!
ज्ञानम् ब्रह्म सनातनम्
the knowledge of Brahman the eternal'
'What your father said is right, and you also speak the truth. O knower of the Mantras! I give to you, the eternal knowledge of Brahman.'
गृहाण द्रविणं दत्तं मत्सत्रे परिशेषितम् ।
इत्युक्त्वान्तर्हितो रुद्रो भगवान् सत्यवत्सल: ॥११॥
गृहाण द्रविणम् दत्तम्
accept the wealth, given
मत्-सत्रे परिशेषितम्
to me in the sacrifice remaining
इति-उक्त्वा-अन्तर्हित: रुद्र:
thus saying disappeared Rudra
भगवान् सत्यवत्सल:
the lord fond of Truth
'Accept this wealth given to me, remaining in the sacrifice'. Thus saying, the lord Rudra, fond of Truth, disappeared.
य एतत् संस्मरेत् प्रात: सायं च सुसमाहित: ।
कविर्भवति मन्त्रज्ञो गतिं चैव तथाऽऽत्मन: ॥१२॥
य: एतत् संस्मरेत्
who ever this remembers
प्रात: सायम् च सुसमाहित:
morning evening and with concentration
कवि:-भवति मन्त्रज्ञ:
learned becomes, knower of Mantras
गतिम् च-एव तथा-आत्मन:
state and also even of Self
Who ever remembers this story with concentration, in the morning and evening, becomes learned, a knower of Mantras, and also knows his own Self, i.e., attains beatitude.
नाभागादम्बरीषोऽभून्महाभागवत: कृती ।
नास्पृशद् ब्रह्मशापोऽपि यं न प्रतिहत: क्वचित् ॥१३॥
नाभागात्-अम्बरीष:-अभूत्-
from Naabhaaga Ambareesha was born,
महाभागवत: कृती
the great devotee, virtuous
न-अस्पृशत् ब्रह्म-शाप:-अपि
did not effect Brahma's curse even
यम् न प्रतिहत: क्वचित्
which is unblock able anywhere
From Naabhaaga the great devotee and most virtuous Ambareesha was born. The infallible curse of Brahmaa also did not effect him, which is unblock able anywhere.
राजा-उवाच -
The King said -
भगवञ्छ्रोतुमिच्छामि राजर्षेस्तस्य धीमत: ।
न प्राभूद् यत्र निर्मुक्तो ब्रह्मदण्डो दुरत्यय: ॥१४॥
भगवन्-श्रोतुम्-इच्छामि
'O lord! to hear want I
राजर्षे:-तस्य धीमत:
of the royal sage his the wise
न प्राभूद् यत्र निर्मुक्त:
did not effect, where discharged
ब्रह्म-दण्ड: दुरत्यय:
Brahmaa's punishment irreversible'
'O lord! I want to hear about the royal sage, on whom the irreversible punishment of Brahmaa, was discharged and it was ineffectual.'
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
अम्बरीषो महाभाग: सप्तद्वीपवतीं महीं ।
अव्ययां च श्रियं लब्ध्वा विभवं चातुलं भुवि ॥१५॥
अम्बरीष: महाभाग:
Ambareesha the highly blessed
सप्त-द्वीप-वतीम् महीम्
of seven islands consisting the earth
अव्ययाम् च श्रियम् लब्ध्वा
inexhaustible and wealth, inheriting
विभवम् च-अतुलम् भुवि
luxuries and incomparable, on the earth
The highly blessed Ambareesha, having inherited the earth with its seven islands, inexhaustible wealth and incomparable luxuries, on this earth,….
मेनेऽतिदुर्लभं पुंसां सर्वं तत् स्वप्नसंस्तुतम् ।
विद्वान् विभवनिर्वाणं तमो विशति यत् पुमान् ॥१६॥
मेने-अति-दुर्लभम् पुंसाम्
considered, very difficult to acquire for the people
सर्वम् तत् स्वप्न-संस्तुतम्
all that dream equal to
विद्वान् विभव-निर्वाणम्
the learned one by wealth infatuated
तम: विशति यत् पुमान्
darkness (hell) enters by which a person
He considered all that which is very difficult to be acquired by men, equal to a dream. The learned one knew that the infatuation of wealth makes a person enter the darkness of hell.
वासुदेवे भगवति तद्भक्तेषु च साधुषु ।
प्राप्तो भावं परं विश्वं येनेदं लोष्टवत् स्मृतम् ॥१७॥
वासुदेवे भगवति
in Vaasudeva The Lord
तत्-भक्तेषु च साधुषु
in His devotees and in the pious
प्राप्त: भावम् परम् विश्वम्
had attained attachment supreme the world
येन-इदम् लोष्ट-वत् स्मृतम्
by which this, mass of earth like felt
He had attained supreme attachment to Lord Vaasudeva, His devotees and the pious people, because of which he felt the world to be as good as a mass of earth.
स वै मन: कृष्णपदारविन्दयोर्वचांसि वैकुण्ठगुणानुवर्णने ।
करौ हरेर्मन्दिरमार्जनादिषु श्रुतिं चकाराच्युतसत्कथोदये ॥१८॥
स: वै मन: कृष्ण-
he indeed (his) mind in Krishna's
पद-अरविन्दयो:-वचांसि
feet lotuses, speech
वैकुण्ठ-गुण-अनुवर्णने
in Vaikuntha virtues recounting
करौ हरे:-मन्दिर-मार्जन-
hands in Hari's temple cleaning
आदिषु श्रुतिम् चकार-
and others, hearing employed
अच्युत-सत्-कथा-उदये
in Achyuta's excellent stories hearing
His mind was engrossed in the lotus feet of Shri Krishna, his speech was engaged in the recounting of the virtues of The Lord of Vaikuntha, his hands were employed in the cleaning and sweeping of Lord Shree Hari's temple, and his auditory senses were engaged in the hearing of The Immortal's excellent stories.
मुकुन्द लिङ्गालयदर्शने दृशौ तद्भृत्यगात्रस्पर्शेऽङ्गसङ्गमम् ।
घ्राणं च तत्पादसरोजसौरभे श्रीमत्तुलस्या रसनां तदर्पिते ॥१९॥
मुकुन्द लिङ्ग-आलय दर्शने
of Shree Krishna's idol and temples in seeing,
दृशौ तत्-भृत्य-गात्र-
the eyes, in His servants' limbs
स्पर्शे-अङ्ग-सङ्गमम्
touching, the tactile sense
घ्राणम् च तत्-पाद सरोज-
sense of smell in His feet lotus's
सौरभे श्रीमत्-तुलस्या:
scent, in the blessed Tulasi
रसना तत्-अर्पिते
the tongue to Him offered
He engaged his eyes in the seeing of the idols and temples of Shree Krishna, his tactile senses in the touching of the limbs of His devotees, the sense of smell in the scent of His lotus feet, and the tongue in the blessed Tulasi offered to Him.
पादौ हरे: क्षेत्रपदानुसर्पणे शिरो हृषीकेशपदाभिवन्दने ।
कामं च दास्ये न तु कामकाम्यया यथोत्तमश्लोकजनाश्रया रति: ॥२०॥
पादौ हरे: क्षेत्र-पद-अनुसर्पणे
the feet in Lord Hari's lands by feet going to
शिर: हृषीकेश
the head in The Controller of senses'
पद-अभिवन्दने
feet bowing to
कामम् च दास्ये
the coveted offerings and in service
न तु काम-काम्यया
not indeed for sense gratification
यथा-उत्तम-श्लोक-
so that The High Renowned's
जन-आश्रया रति:
peoples surrendered attachment
He employed his feet in treading on foot the holy lands of Lord Shree Hari, the head in bowing to the feet of The Controller of the senses, the coveted articles of offerings in the service of The Highly Renowned, not for sense gratification but to develop love for His devotees.
एवं सदा कर्मकलापमात्मन: परेऽधियज्ञे भगवत्यधोक्षजे ।
सर्वात्मभावं विदधन्महीमिमां तन्निष्ठविप्राभिहित: शशास ह ॥२१॥
एवम् सदा कर्म-कलापम्-
in this manner, always actions and duties
आत्मन: परे-अधियज्ञे
his, in The Supreme, The Lord of sacrifices
भगवति-अधोक्षजे
in The Lord beyond sense perception
सर्व-आत्म-भावम् विदधत्-
with entire own being resigning,
महीम्-इमाम् तत्-निष्ठ-विप्र-
the earth this, in Him devoted Braahmanas
अभिहित: शशास ह
directions ruled indeed
In this manner, all his actions and duties, and his entire own being, resigning to The Supreme Lord, The Lord of sacrifices, The Lord beyond sense perception, he ruled this earth under the direction of the Braahmanas, His devotees.
ईजेऽश्वमेधैरधियज्ञमीश्वरं महाविभूत्योपचिताङ्गदक्षिणै: ।
ततैर्वसिष्ठासितगौतमादिभिर्धन्वन्यभिस्रोतमसौ सरस्वतीम् ॥२२॥
ईजे-अश्वमेधै:-
propitiated, by Ashvamedhas
अधियज्ञम्-ईश्वरम्
The Almighty Lord of sacrifices
महा-विभूत्या-
by abundant riches
अपचित-अङ्ग-दक्षिणै:
inflated limbs and fees
ततै:-वसिष्ठ-असित
extensive, by Vashishtha, Asita,
गौतम-आदिभि:-
Gautama and others
धन्वनि-अभिस्रोतम्-
in the desert in the front of the stream
असौ सरस्वतीम्
he, of river Sarasvati
He propitiated The Almighty Lord of sacrifices by several Ashvamedhas which had all their parts and fees inflated, so to say, by the abundant riches, conducted by Vashishtha, Asita, Gautam and others, in the desert land facing the stream of the river Sarasvati.
यस्य क्रतुषु गीर्वाणै: सदस्या ऋत्विजो जना: ।
तुल्यरूपाश्चानिमिषा व्यदृश्यन्त सुवासस: ॥२३॥
यस्य क्रतुषु गीर्वाणै:
in whose sacrifice, with the gods,
सदस्या: ऋत्विज: जना:
the members, officiating priests, people
तुल्य-रूपा:-च-अनिमिषा:
were of same looks and unwinking
व्यदृश्यन्त सुवासस:
were seen well dressed
In whose sacrifice, it was seen that the members, the officiating priests and the people all looked like the gods, unwinking, of the same appearance and well dressed.
स्वर्गो न प्रार्थितो यस्य मनुजैरमरप्रिय: ।
शृण्वद्भिरुपगायद्भिरुत्तमश्लोकचेष्टितम् ॥२४॥
स्वर्ग: न प्रार्थित:
the heaven not prayed for
यस्य मनुजै:-अमर-प्रिय:
by whose men, to the immortals so dear
शृण्वद्भि:-उपगायद्भि:-
by the hearing to and by the singing
उत्तमश्लोक-चेष्टितम्
of the highly Renowned's stories
Even the heavens, so dear to the immortals, were not desired for, by whose people, who were hearing and singing the stories of The Highly Renowned Lord's stories, all the time.
समर्द्धयन्ति तान् कामा: स्वाराज्यपरिभाविता: ।
दुर्लभा नापि सिद्धानां मुकुन्दं हृदि पश्यत: ॥२५॥
समर्द्धयन्ति तान् कामा:
delight them the pleasure
स्वाराज्य-परिभाविता:
by self-realization defeated
दुर्लभा: न-अपि सिद्धानाम्
difficult to attain not also by the Siddhaas
मुकुन्दम् हृदि पश्यत:
Mukunda in the hearts perceiving
To them, who perceived Mukunda in their hearts, the pleasures, difficult to be attained even by the Siddhas, did not delight, which were defeated by the bliss of their own Self-Realization.
स इत्थं भक्तियोगेन तपोयुक्तेन पार्थिव: ।
स्वधर्मेण हरिं प्रीणन् सङ्गान् सर्वाच्छनैर्जहौ ॥२६॥
स: इत्थम् भक्ति-योगेन
he, in this manner, by devotion engaged
तप:-युक्तेन
by austerities accompanied the king
स्व-धर्मेण हरिम् प्रीणन्
by own duties conducting Lord Hari propitiated
सङ्गान् सर्वान्-शनै:-जहौ
associations all gradually gave up
In this manner, he, engaged in devotion, given to austerities, and conducting his own duties, propitiated The Lord Shree Hari, and gradually gave up all associations.
गृहेषु दारेषु सुतेषु बन्धुषु द्विपोत्तमस्यन्दनवाजिपत्तिषु ।
अक्षय्यरत्नाभरणायुधादिष्वनन्तकोशेष्वकरोद्सन्मतिम् ॥२७॥
गृहेषु दारेषु सुतेषु बन्धुषु
in the houses, wives, sons, relations,
द्विप-उत्तम स्यन्दन-वाजि-पत्तिषु
elephants excellent, chariots, horses, army
अक्षय्य-रत्न-आभरण-आयुध-आदि-
inexhaustible jewels, ornaments, weapons others
अनन्त-कोशेषु-अकरोत्-असत्-मतिम्
endless treasuries made untrue opinion
He developed a sense of untruth towards the houses, wives, sons, relations, excellent elephants, chariots, horses, army, inexhaustible jewels and ornaments, weapons and endless treasuries and others.
तस्मा अदाद् हरिश्चक्रं प्रत्यनीकभयावहम् ।
एकान्तभक्तिभावेन प्रीतो भृत्याभिरक्षणम् ॥२८॥
तस्मै अदाद् हरि:-चक्रम्
for him gave Lord Shree Hari the discus
प्रत्यनीक-भय-आवहम्
of the enemies fear generating
एकान्त-भक्ति-भावेन
with unwavering devotion love
प्रीत: भृत्य-अभिरक्षणम्
delighted of the servants' protector
Delighted by his unwavering devotion and love, Lord Shree Hari gave to him, His discus, the terror of the enemies, and the protector of His servants.
आरिराधयिषु: कृष्णं महिष्या तुल्यशीलया ।
युक्त: सांवत्सरं वीरो दधार द्वादशीव्रतम् ॥२९॥
आरिराधयिषु: कृष्णम्
to propitiate wanting to, Lord Krishna
महिष्या तुल्य-शीलया
with the queen of same nature,
युक्त: सांवत्सरम् वीर:
along with, for a year, the valorous
दधार द्वादशी-व्रतम्
undertook the twelfth day fast
The valorous king, wanting to propitiate Lord Krishna, undertook the fast of the twelfth day, for a year, along with his queen of similar disposition.
व्रतान्ते कार्तिके मासि त्रिरात्रं समुपोषित: ।
स्नात: कदाचित् कालिन्द्यां हरिं मधुवनेऽर्चयत् ॥३०॥
व्रत-अन्ते कार्तिके मासि
at the fast's end, in Kaartika month
त्रि-रात्रम् समुपोषित:
three nights having fasted
स्नात: कदाचित् कालिन्द्याम्
bathed one day in Kaalindee river
हरिम् मधुवने-अर्चयत्
Shree Hari in Madhuvana worshipped
One day, in the month of Kaartika, at the end of the fast, having fasted for three days, he bathed in the river Kaalindee and worshipped Shree Hari in Madhuvana.
महाभिषेकविधिना सर्वोपस्करसम्पदा ।
अभिषिच्याम्बराकल्पैर्गन्धमाल्यार्हणादिभि: ॥३१॥
महाभिषेक-विधिना
by the 'Mahaa-abhisheka' procedure
सर्व-उपस्कर-सम्पदा
with all the materials and riches
अभिषिच्य-अम्बर-आकल्पै:-
having bathed by raiments and ornaments
गन्ध-माल्य-अर्हण-आदिभि:
scents and garlands honouring and others
He bathed The Lord by the procedure of 'Mahaa-abhisheka', and worshipped Him with due honour by raiments, ornaments, scents, garlands and other articles.
तद्गतान्तरभावेन पूजयामास केशवम् ।
ब्राह्मणांश्च महाभागान् सिद्धार्थानपि भक्तित: ॥३२॥
तत्-गत-अन्तर-भावेन
in Him fixed absorbed mind
पूजयामास केशवम्
worshipped Lord Krishna
ब्राह्मणान्-च महा-भागान्
the Braahmanas and the highly blessed
सिद्ध-अर्थान्-अपि भक्तित:
of accomplished objects also with reverence
He worshipped Lord Krishna with his mind fixed and absorbed in Him, and also the highly blessed Braahmanas who had their objects accomplished, with reverence.
गवां रुक्मविषाणीनां रूप्याङ्घ्रीणां सुवाससाम् ।
पय:शीलवयोरूपवत्सोपस्करसम्पदाम् ॥३३॥
गवाम् रुक्म-विषाणीनाम्
cows with gold plated horns
रूप्य-अङ्घ्रीणाम् सुवाससाम्
silver plated hoofs, with good cloth covered,
पय:शील-वय:-रूप-वत्स-
with milk endowed, age, looks, calves
उपस्कर-सम्पदाम्
appendages and materials
The cows with gold plated horns, silver plated hoofs, good cloth covered, endowed with abundant milk, young age, good looks, accompanied by calves, appendages of milking and other accessories….
प्राहिणोत् साधु विप्रेभ्यो गृहेषु न्यर्बुदानि षट् ।
भोजयित्वा द्विजानग्रे स्वाद्वन्नं गुणवत्तमम् ॥३४॥
प्रहिणोत् साधु विप्रेभ्य:
sent to the pious Braahmanas'
गृहेषु न्यर्बुदानि षट्
houses crores sixty
भोजयित्वा द्विजान्-अग्रे
feeding the Braahmanas first
स्वादु-अन्नम् गुणवत्तमम्
tasty food wholesome
He sent sixty crores cows to the houses of the pious Braahmanas, first feeding them with tasty and wholesome food.
लब्धकामैरनुज्ञात: पारणायोपचक्रमे ।
तस्य तर्ह्यतिथि: साक्षाद् दुर्वासा भगवानभूत् ॥३५॥
लब्ध-कामै:-अनुज्ञात:
by (them, who) had received the desired
पारणाय-उपचक्रमे
for the fast ending meal started
तस्य तर्हि-अतिथि: साक्षाद्
his, at that time, the guest, himself
दुर्वासा भगवान्-अभूत्
Durvaasaa glorious became
He, permitted by them who had received their desired objects, started to take the fast ending meal. Just at that time, there came as his guest the glorious Durvaasaa himself.
तमानर्चातिथिं भूप: प्रत्युत्थानासनार्हणै: ।
ययाचेऽभ्यवहाराय पादमूलमुपागत: ॥३६॥

The king arose from his seat, offered to him a seat, and worshipped him with the articles of worship and bowing down to his feet, prayed to him to take his meal.
प्रतिनन्द्य स तद्याच्ञां कर्तुमावश्यकं गत: ।
निममज्ज वृहद् ध्यायन् कालिन्दीसलिले शुभे ॥३७॥
प्रतिनन्द्य स: तत्-याच्ञाम्
accepting he, his offer
कर्तुम्-आवश्यकम् गत:
to do the necessary, went
निममज्ज वृहद् ध्यायन्
plunged, on the Infinite meditating
कालिन्दी-सलिले शुभे
in the Kaalindee waters holy
Accepting his offer, he went to do his necessary routine, plunged into the holy Kaalindee waters, and meditated on The Infinite.
मुहूर्तार्धावशिष्टायां द्वादश्यां पारणं प्रति ।
चिन्तयामास धर्मज्ञो द्विजैस्तद्धर्मसङ्कटे ॥३८॥
मुहूर्त-अर्ध-अवशिष्टायाम्
Muhurta (25 minitues) half was left
द्वादश्याम् पारणम् प्रति
of the Dvaadashi fast ending towards
चिन्तयामास धर्मज्ञ:
reasoned, the knower of right,
द्विजै:-तत्-धर्म-सङ्कटे
with the Braahmanas, in that moral crisis
When half a Muhurta, twenty five minitues of ending the fast on the day of Dvaadashi was left, Ambareesha, the knower of right conduct reasoned with the Braahmanas in the hour of moral crisis.
ब्राह्मणातिक्रमे दोषो द्वादश्यां यदपारणे ।
यत् कृत्वा साधु मे भूयादधर्मो वा न मां स्पृशेत् ॥३९॥
ब्राह्मण-अतिक्रमे दोष:
in a Braahmana's disrespect is sin,
द्वादश्याम् यत्-अपारणे
in Dvaadashi, just as not ending the fast
यत् कृत्वा साधु मे भूयात्-
what by doing, good to me may come
अधर्म: वा न माम् स्पृशेत्
and unrighteousness or may not me touch
It is a sin in showing disrespect to a Braahmana and a sin in not ending the fast on Dvaadashi day. By doing what, good may come to me, and unrighteousness may not touch me.
अम्भसा केवलेनाथ करिष्ये व्रतपारणम् ।
प्राहुरब्भक्षणं विप्रा ह्यशितं नाशितं च तत् ॥४०॥
अम्भसा केवलेन-अथ
by water alone, then
करिष्ये व्रत-पारणम्
will do of the fast the end
प्राहु:-अप्-भक्षणम् विप्रा: हि-
said that water drinking, the Braahmanas, indeed
अशितम् न-अशितम् च तत्
is eating, not eating and that
I will end my fast with water alone, which the Braahmanas say indeed drinking water is eating and not eating also.
इत्यप: प्राश्य राजर्षिश्चिन्तयन् मनसाच्युतम् ।
प्रत्यचष्ट कुरुश्रेष्ठ द्विजागमनमेव स: ॥४१॥
इति-अप: प्राश्य राजर्षि:-
so, water drinking, the royal sage
चिन्तयन् मनसा-अच्युतम्
thinking mentally of The Immortal Lord
प्रत्यचष्ट कुरुश्रेष्ठ
awaited, O scion of the Kurus!
द्विज-आगमनम्-एव स:
the Braahmana's returning only he
So, drinking water and mentally thinking of The Immortal Lord, he, O scion of the Kurus! awaited the return of the Braahmana.
दुर्वासा यमुनाकूलात् कृतावश्यक आगत: ।
राज्ञाभिनन्दितस्तस्य बुबुधे चेष्टितं धिया ॥४२॥
दुर्वासा यमुना-कूलात्
Durvaasaa, from Yamuna's bank
कृत-आवश्यक आगत:
having done the necessary returned
राज्ञा-अभिनन्दित:-तस्य
by the king welcomed,
बुबुधे चेष्टितम् धिया
understood the actions intuitively
Durvaasaa returned from the bank of the Yamuna river after having done his necessary routine. He was welcomed by the king, but he intuitively knew the actions of the king.
मन्युना प्रचलद्गात्रो भ्रुकुटीकुटिलानन: ।
बुभुक्षितश्च सुतरां कृताञ्जलिमभाषत ॥४३॥
मन्युना प्रचलत्-गात्र:
with anger shivering body
भ्रुकुटी-कुटिल-आनन:
with eyebrows crooked faced
बुभुक्षित:-च सुतराम्
with hunger and very much
कृत-अञ्जलिम्- अभाषत
to him with folded hands, said
His body shivered with anger, his face was distorted by the crooked eyebrows, and he was very hungry, he said to him who was standing with folded hand.
अहो अस्य नृशंसस्य श्रियोन्मत्तस्य पश्यत ।
धर्मव्यतिक्रमं विष्णोरभक्तस्येशमानिन: ॥४४॥
अहो अस्य नृशंसस्य
Alas! His, cruel,
श्रिय:-उन्मत्तस्य पश्यत
of wealth arrogant, look at
धर्म-व्यतिक्रमम् विष्णो:-
of right conduct trespassing, to Lord Vishnu
अभक्तस्य-ईश-मानिन:
not devoted, himself the all-powerful believing
'Alas! Look at this cruel monarch intoxicated by wealth, not devoted to Lord Vishnu, believing himself to be all-powerful and so trespassing the right conduct.'
यो मामतिथिमायातमातिथ्येन निमन्त्र्य च ।
अदत्त्वा भुक्तवांस्तस्य सद्यस्ते दर्शये फलम् ॥४५॥
य: माम्-अतिथिम्-आयातम्-
who me, the guest having come
आतिथ्येन निमन्त्र्य च
as a guest having invited and
अदत्त्वा भुक्तवान्-तस्य
not having given (food) has eaten, of that
सद्य:-ते दर्शये फलम्
soon, to you will show the result
'Who, to me, having come as a guest, and having offered hospitality, has eaten food without offering to me. I will soon show to you the result of this demeanour.'
एवं ब्रुवाण उत्कृत्य जटां रोषविदीपित: ।
तया स निर्ममे तस्मै कृत्यां कालानलोपमाम् ॥४६॥
एवम् ब्रुवाण: उत्कृत्य
so saying, uprooting
जटाम् रोष-विदीपित:
the matted hair, in anger burning
तया स: निर्ममे तस्मै
by that he made for him
कृत्याम् काल-अनल-उपमाम्
Krityaa, the dissolution fire like
So saying, the sage burning with anger uprooted the matted hair and made the female evil spirit Krityaa with it, which was like the fire of dissolution.
तामापतन्तीं ज्वलतीमसिहस्तां पदा भुवम् ।
वेपयन्तीं समुद्वीक्ष्य न चचाल पदान्नृप: ॥४७॥
ताम्-आपतन्तीम् ज्वलतीम्-
her descending enflamed
असि-हस्ताम् पदा भुवम्
with sword in hand, by the feet the earth
वेपयन्तीम् समुद्वीक्ष्य
making to shiver, watching
न चचाल पदात्-नृप:
did not move, a bit the emperor
Watching her descending, enflamed, sword in hand, making the earth to shiver with her feet, the emperor did not move a bit.
प्राग्दिष्टं भृत्यरक्षायां पुरुषेण महत्मना ।
ददाह कृत्यां तां चक्रं क्रुद्धाहिमिव पावक: ॥४८॥
प्राक्-दिष्टम् भृत्य-रक्षायाम्
previously employed, for the servant's protection

ददाह कृत्याम् ताम्
burnt Krityaa that
चक्रम् क्रुद्ध-अहिम्-इव पावक:
the discus enraged snake, like the fire
By The Primary Person, The Universal Spirit, previously employed for His servant's protection, the Sudarshana discus, burnt that Krityaa, like the fire burns the enraged snake.
तदभिद्रवदुद्वीक्ष्य स्वप्रयासं च निष्फलम् ।
दुर्वासा दुद्रुवे भीतो दिक्षु प्राणपरीप्सया ॥४९॥
तत्-अभिद्रवत्-उद्वीक्ष्य
that rushing seeing
स्व-प्रयासम् च निष्फलम्
own effort and fruitless
दुर्वासा दुद्रवे भीत:
Durvaasaa ran in fear
दिक्षु प्राण-परीप्सया
in the directions, life to save anxious
Durvaasaa, seeing that evil spirit rushing towards him, and his efforts becoming fruitless, ran about in the directions in fear, anxious to save his life.
तमन्वधावद् भगवद्रथाङ्गं दावाग्निरुद्धूतशिखो यथाहिम् ।
मुनिरीक्षमाणो गुहां विविक्षु: प्रससार मेरो: ॥५०॥
तम्-अन्वधावत्
that, following after

The Lord's discus
दावाग्नि:-उद्धूत-
forest fire upwards,
शिख: यथा-अहिम्
flames as a snake
तथा-अनुषक्तम्
like that following
मुनि:-ईक्षमाण:
the sage seeing
गुहाम् विविक्षु:
in the cave to eager to enter
प्रससार मेरो:
fled towards the Meru
The sage seeing that The Lord's discus was pursuing him like the uprising flames of the forest fire, he like a snake eager to enter the cave fled towards Mount Meru.
दिशो नभ: क्ष्मां विवरान् समुदराँल्लोकान् सपालांस्त्रिदिवं गत: स: ।
यतो यतो धावति तत्र तत्र सुदर्शनं दुष्प्रसहं ददर्श ॥५१॥
दिश: नभ: क्ष्माम्
in the directions, the sky,
विवरान् समुद्रान्-
to the various regions, the oceans,
लोकान् सपालान्
the terrestrial worlds, and their guardians,
दिवम् गत: स:
to the heavens went he
यत: यत: धावति
where he ran
तत्र तत्र सुदर्शनम्
there the Sudarshana
दुष्प्रसहम् ददर्श
the formidable saw
In his eagerness to escape he went into the directions, the sky, to the various regions, the oceans, the terrestrial worlds, and their guardians, the heavens, where ever he went, he saw the formidable Sudarshana discus.
अलब्धनाथ: स यदा कुतश्चित् संत्रस्तचित्तोऽरणमेषमाण: ।
देवं विरिञ्चं समगाद् विधातस्त्राह्यात्मयोनेऽजिततेजसो माम् ॥५२॥
अलब्ध-नाथ: स: यदा कुतश्चित्
finding no protector, he, when anywhere
संत्रस्त-चित्त:-अरणम्-एषमाण:
perplexed in mind, shelter seeking
देवम् विरिञ्चम् समगाद्
the god Brahmaa went to
विधात:-त्राहि-आत्मयोने-
'Brahmaa save me, O Self-born!
अजित-तेजस: माम्
from the undiminishable power, me'
When, he found no protector anywhere, he was much perplexed in the mind, and seeking shelter, went to Brahmaa, 'Brahmaa! save me, O Self-born! from the undiminishable power of the discus.'
ब्रह्मा-उवाच -
Brahmaa said -
स्थानं मदीयं सहविश्वमेतत् क्रीडावसाने द्विपरार्धसंज्ञे ।
भ्रूभङ्गमात्रेण हि संदिधक्षो: कालात्मनो यस्य तिरोभविष्यति ॥५३॥
स्थानम् मत्-इयम्

सह-विश्वम्-एतत्
with the universe this
क्रीडा-अवसाने
at the pastime end
द्विपरार्ध-संज्ञे
Dviparaardha named
भ्रू-भङ्ग-मात्रेण हि
by the eyebrows contraction alone
संदिधक्षो:
eager to burn
कालात्मन: यस्य
Time Spirit is Whose
तिरो-भविष्यति
vanish will be
At the end of the pastime, named as Dviparaardha, when He will be eager to burn this universe, Whose Spirit is Time, by a mere contraction of His eye-brows, my region and all this universe will vanish.
अहं भवो दक्षभृगुप्रधाना: प्रजेशभूतेशसुरेशमुख्या: ।
सर्वे वयं यन्नियमं प्रपन्ना मूर्ध्न्यर्पितं लोकहितं वहाम: ॥५४॥
अहम् भव: दक्ष भृगु-प्रधाना:
myself, Lord Shiva, Daksha, Bhrigu, the leading
प्रजेश-भूतेश-सुरेश-
the Prajaapatis, the Bhootapatis, Indra,
मुख्या: सर्वे वयम्
the chief, all of us
यत्-नियमम् प्रपन्ना:
Whose law obey
मूर्ध्नि-अर्पितम्
on the head
लोक-हितम् वहाम:
for the universe benefit, carry
Myself, Lord Shiva, Daksha, Bhrigu, the leaders, the Prajaapatis, the Bhootapatis, and the chief of the gods, Indra, all of us, obey Whose law, and carry it on our heads for the benefit of the universe.
प्रत्याख्यातो विरिञ्चेन विष्णुचक्रोपतापित: ।
दुर्वासा: शरणं यात: शर्वकैलासवासिनम् ॥५५॥
प्रत्याख्यात: विरिञ्चेन
returned by Brahmaa
विष्णु-चक्र-उपतापित:
by Vishnu's discus scorched
दुर्वासा: शरणम् यात:
Durvaasaa in shelter went
शर्व-कैलास-वासिनम्
to Lord Shiva on Kailaasha residing
Thus Durvaasaa, returned by Brahmaa, and scorched by Lord Vishnu's discus, went in the shelter of Lord Shiva residing on Mount Kailaasha.
श्री रुद्र उवाच -
Shree Rudra said -
वयं न तात प्रभवाम भूम्नि यस्मिन् परेऽन्येऽप्यजजीवकोशा: ।
भवन्ति काले न भवन्ति हीदृशा: सहस्रशो यत्र वयं भ्रमाम: ॥५६॥
वयम् न तात प्रभवाम भूम्नि
we, do not, O Son! have the capacity in The Infinite
यस्मिन् परे-अन्ये-अपि-
in Whom , The Supreme, others also
अज-जीव-कोशा:
Brahmaa and living beings all together
भवन्ति काले न भवन्ति
become, in Time, do not become
हि-ईदृशा: सहस्रश:
indeed, such like thousands
यत्र वयम् भ्रमाम:
where we are tossed about
O Son Durvaasaa! We have no capacity over and above The Infinite Supreme, where, all the other living beings, in thousands, and even Brahmaa and Me put together, appear in time and cease to be in Time, indeed, and in Whom we are tossed about.
अहं सनत्कुमारश्च नारदो भगवानज: ।
कपिलोऽपान्तरतमो देवलो धर्म आसुरि: ॥५७॥
अहम् सनत्कुमार:-च
myself, the Sanatkumaaras, and
नारद: भगवान्-अज:
Naarada, the glorious Brahmaa,
कपिल:-अपान्तरतम:
Kapila, Apaantaraatmaa,
देवल: धर्म आसुरि:
Devala, Dharma, Aasuri,
Myself, the Sanatkumaaras, and Naarada, the glorious Brahmaa, Kapila, Apaantaraatmaa, Devala, Dharma, Aasuri,….
मरीचिप्रमुखाश्चान्ये सिद्धेशा: पारदर्शना: ।
विदाम न वयं सर्वे यन्मायां माययाऽऽवृता: ॥५८॥
मरीचि-प्रमुखा:-च-अन्ये
Mareechi, the leaders, and others
सिद्धेशा: पार-दर्शना:
the Siddha lords, of the beyond the knowers
विदाम न वयम् सर्वे
do not know we all
यत्-मायाम् मायया-आवृता:
Whose Maayaa, by Maayaa enveloped
Mareechi, the leaders, the Siddha lord, the knowers of the beyond, we all do not know about His Maayaa as we are enveloped in that Maayaa itself.
तस्य विश्वेश्वरस्येदं शस्त्रं दुर्विषहं हि न: ।
तमेव शरणम् याहि हरिस्ते शं विधास्यति ॥५९॥
तस्य विश्वेश्वरस्य-इदम्
of the universe The Lord's, this
शस्त्रम् दुर्विषहम् हि न:
weapon unpredictable indeed by us
तम्-एव शरणम् याहि
Him alone as shelter seek
हरि:-ते शम् विधास्यति
Lord Shree Hari to you security will bring
This weapon is of The Lord of the universe, and so it is unretrivable by us. You seek his shelter alone, Lord Shree Hari will certainly bring you security.
ततो निराशो दुर्वासा: पदं भगवतो ययौ ।
वैकुण्ठाख्यं यदध्यास्ते श्रीनिवास: श्रिया सह ॥६०॥
तत: निराश: दुर्वासा:
from there disappointed Durvaasaa
पदम् भगवत: ययौ
to the realm of The Almighty went
वैकुण्ठ-आख्यम् यत्-अध्यास्ते
Vaikuntha named where lives
श्रीनिवास: श्रिया सह
Laxmi's consort, Laxmi with
The disappointed Durvaasaa, went from there to the realm of The Almighty Vishnu, named Vaikuntha, where Laxmi's consort, Lord Vishnu lives with Laxmi.
संदह्यमानोऽजितशस्त्रवह्निना तत्पादमूले पतित: स वेपथु: ।
आहाच्युतानन्त सदीप्सित प्रभो कृतागसं माव हि विश्वभावन: ॥६१॥
संदह्यमान:-अजित-शस्त्र-
being scorched, by The invincible weapon's
वह्निना तत्-पाद-मूले
fire, in His feet soles
पतित: स: वेपथु:
fell he shivering
आह-अच्युत-अनन्त-
and said, 'O Immortal, Eternal!
सत्-ईप्सित प्रभो
by the pious sought, O Almighty!
कृत-आगसम् मा-अव
committed offence, me protect do,
हि विश्वभावन:
indeed, O of the universe The Protector!'
He being scorched by the fire of the weapon of the Invincible Lord, fell at the soles of His feet shivering, and said, 'O Immortal, O Eternal! Your are sought by the pious souls, I have committed an offence, do protect me, O Protector of the universe.'
अजानता ते परमानुभावं कृतं मयाघं भवत: प्रियाणाम् ।
विधेहि तस्यापचितिं विधातर्मुच्येत यन्नाम्न्युदिते नारकोऽपि ॥६२॥
अजानता ते परम-अनुभावम्
not knowing Your Supreme glory
कृतम् मया-अघम्
was done by me sin
भवत: प्रियाणाम्
to Your beloveds
विधेहि तस्य-अपचितिम्
make that sin ineffectual
विधात:-मुच्येत यत्-नाम्नि-
O Director of universe, liberated, by Whose name
उदिते नारक:-अपि
uttering, the denizens of hell also
O Director of the Universe! I not knowing Your Supreme glory, have committed sin towards Your beloveds. Do render that ineffectual. By uttering Your names even the denizen of hell are liberated.
श्री भगवान्-उवाच -
The Lord said -
अहं भक्त पराधीनो ह्यस्वतन्त्र इव द्विज ।
साधुभिर्ग्रस्तहृदयो भक्तैर्भक्तजनप्रिय: ॥६३॥
अहम् भक्त पराधीन:
I am of the devotees' subject
हि-अस्वतन्त्र इव द्विज
indeed not independent, in that, O Braahmana!
साधुभि:-ग्रस्त-हृदय:
by the pious (devotees) captivated heart
भक्तै:-भक्त-जन-प्रिय:
by devotees, of the devotees the beloved
'O Braahmana! I am not indeed independent, I am bound by the devotees, By the pious devotee souls, My heart is captivated, and I am their only beloved.'
नाहमात्मानमाशासे मद्भक्तै: साधुभिर्विना ।
श्रियं चात्यन्तिकीं ब्रह्मन् येषां गतिरहं परा ॥६४॥
न-अहम्-आत्मानम्-आशासे
not I Myself covet
मत्-भक्तै: साधुभि:-विना
by My devotees, the pious besides
श्रियम् च-आत्यन्तिकीम् ब्रह्मन्
Shree and The Eternal, O Braahmana!
येषाम् गति:-अहम् परा
of whom the goal I am ultimate
'O Braahmana! I do not covet Myself or even The Eternal Goddess Laxmi, besides My pious devotees, for whom I am the ultimate goal.'
ये दारागारपुत्राप्तान् प्राणान् वित्तमिमं परम् ।
हित्वा मां शरणं याता: कथं तांस्त्यक्तुमुत्सहे ॥६५॥
ये दार-आगार-पुत्र-आप्तान्
those who, wife, house, son, relatives,
प्राणान् वित्तम्-इमम् परम्
life, wealth, this heaven
हित्वा माम् शरणम् याता:
abandoning, Me shelter seek
कथम् ताम् त्यक्तुम्-उत्सहे
how them, to forsake dare (I)
How do I dare to forsake these people who have abandoned their wife, house, son, relatives, life, wealth, and this heaven and seek My shelter.
मयि निर्बद्धहृदया: साधव: समदर्शना: ।
वशीकुर्वन्ति मां भक्या सत्स्त्रिय: सत्पतिं यथा ॥६६॥
मयि निर्बद्ध-हृदया:
in Me bound at heart
साधव: सम-दर्शना:
the pious looking at all with equal eye
वशी-कुर्वन्ति माम् भक्या
in control take Me by devotion
सत्-स्त्रिय: सत्पतिम् यथा
the virtuous women virtuous husbands just as
The pious are, in heart, bound to Me, and they look at everyone with an equal eye. They take control over Me by their devotion just as the virtuous women take control over their husbands.
मत्सेवया प्रतीतं च सालोक्यादिचतुष्टयम् ।
नेच्छन्ति सेवया पूर्णा: कुतोऽन्यत् कालविद्रुतम् ॥६७॥
मत्-सेवया प्रतीतम् च
with My devotion sated and
सालोक्य-आदि चतुष्टयम्
Saalokya and other four (liberation types)
न-इच्छन्ति सेवया पूर्णा:
do not desire by service attained
कुत:-अन्यत् काल-विद्रुतम्
what of others by Time ravaged
They, being sated with devotion to Me, do not even desire for the four types of liberation, Saalokya and others, which are attained by My service only, what of other things which are ravaged by Time.
साधवो हृदयं मह्यं साधूनां हृदयं त्वहम् ।
मदन्यत् ते न जानन्ति नाहं तेभ्यो मनागपि ॥६८॥
साधव: हृदयम् मह्यम्
the pious are hearts Mine
साधूनाम् हृदयम् तु-अहम्
of the pious the heart indeed I am
मत्-अन्यत् ते न जानन्ति
Me other than, they do not know
न-अहम् तेभ्य: मनाक्-अपि
not I other than them, any thing also
The pious are My hearts, and I am their heart. They do not know anything other than Me, and indeed I do not know anything else other than them.
उपायं कथयिष्यामि तव विप्र शृणुष्व तत् ।
अयं ह्यात्माभिचारस्ते यतस्तं यातु वै भवान् ।
साधुषु प्रहितं तेज: प्रहर्तु: कुरुतेऽशिवम् ॥६९॥
उपायम् कथयिष्यामि
the way out I will tell
तव विप्र शृणुष्व तत्
to you O Braahmana! listen to that
अयम् हि-आत्म-अभिचार:-ते
this indeed self demolishing yours
यत:-तम् यातु वै भवान्
from whom, to him go, surely you
साधुषु प्रहितम् तेज:
on the pious stricken force
प्रहर्तु: कुरुते-अशिवम्
to the striker brings harm
O Braahmana! I will tell you the way out, listen to it. Indeed from where this self-demolishing strike of yours has come, go to him. Surely the force struck to the pious souls brings harm to the striker himself.
तपो विद्या च विप्राणां नि: श्रेयसकरे उभे ।
ते एव दुर्वीनीतस्य कल्पेते कर्तुरन्यथा ॥७०॥
तप: विद्या च विप्राणाम्
asceticism worship and for the Braahmanas
नि: श्रेयसकरे उभे
are beneficial both
ते एव दुर्वीनीतस्य
they alone for the arrogant
कल्पेते कर्तु:-अन्यथा
creates for the applier otherwise
Asceticism and worship both are beneficial to the Braahmanas, but for the arrogant, they themselves create results otherwise for the applier.
ब्रह्मंस्तद् गच्छ भद्रं ते नाभागतनयं नृपम् ।
क्षमापय महाभागं तत: शान्तिर्भविष्यति ॥७१॥
ब्रह्मन्-तत् गच्छ भद्रम् ते
O Braahmana! So go, well be with you!
नाभाग-तनयम् नृपम्
to Naabhaaga's son the king
क्षमा-आपय महाभागम्
pardon ask for from the greatly blessed
तत: शान्ति:-भविष्यति
from that peace will be
O Braahmana! Well be with you! So go to Naabhaaga's son the king Ambareesha, the greatly blessed, and seek his pardon, then there will be peace.
