श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं भगवताऽऽदिष्टो दुर्वासाश्चक्रतापित: ।

अम्बरीषमुपावृत्य तत्पादौ दु:खितोऽग्रहीत् ॥१॥


एवम् भगवता-आदिष्ट:
thus by The Lord directed
दुर्वासा:-चक्र-तापित:
Durvaasaa, by the discus tormented
अम्बरीषम्-उपावृत्य
Ambareesha approaching
तत्-पादौ दु:खित:-अग्रहीत्
his feet sorrowfully held to

Thus directed by The Lord, Durvaasaa, tormented by the discus, went back to Ambareesha and full of sorrow held his feet.


तस्य सोद्यमनं वीक्ष्य पादस्पर्शविलज्जित: ।

अस्तावीत् तद् हरेरस्त्रं कृपया पीडितो भृशम् ॥२॥


तस्य स:-उद्यमनम् वीक्ष्य
his, he, endeavour observing
पाद-स्पर्श-विलज्जित:
by feet touching ashamed
अस्तावीत् तत्-हरे:-अस्त्रम्
prayed to that Shree Hari's weapon
कृपया पीडित: भृशम्
by compassion hurt much

He, Ambareesha, observing the endeavour of the sage, was very ashamed at his touching his feet. Much hurt with compassion he prayed to the weapon of Shree Hari.


अम्बरीष उवाच -
Ambareesha said -
त्वमग्निर्भगवान् सूर्यस्त्वं सोमो ज्योतिषां पति: ।

त्वमापस्त्वं क्षितिर्व्योम वायुर्मात्रेन्द्रियाणि च ॥३॥


त्वम्-अग्नि:-भगवान्
you are Agni (fire), the glorious
सूर्य:-त्वम् सोम:
Soorya (sun), you are the Soma (moon),
ज्योतिषाम् पति:
of the luminaries the lord
त्वम्-आप:-त्वम्
you are water, you are the
क्षिति:-व्योम वायु:-
earth, the sky, the air,
मात्रा-इन्द्रियाणि च
the objects of senses, the senses and

You are Agni (the fire god), the glorious Soorya (the sun god), you are the Soma (the moon god), you are the lord of the luminaries, you are water, you are the earth, the sky, the air, the objects of senses, and the senses.


सुदर्शन नमस्तुभ्यं सहस्राराच्युतप्रिय ।

सर्वास्त्रघातिन् विप्राय स्वस्ति भूया इडस्पते ॥४॥


सुदर्शन नम:-तुभ्यम्
O Sudarshana! Hail to you!
सहस्र-अर-अच्युत-प्रिय
of thousand spokes, to The Immortal Lord dear
सर्व-अस्त्र-घातिन्
of all the weapons the destroyer
विप्राय स्वस्ति भूया
for the Braahmana propitious be
इडस्पते
O Protector of earth!

O Sudarshana! Hail to you! having a thousand spokes, the beloved of The Immortal Lord, the destroyer of all the weapons, propitious be for the Braahmana, O Protector of earth!


त्वं धर्मस्त्वमृतं सत्यं त्वं यज्ञोऽखिलयज्ञभुक् ।

त्वं लोकपाल: सर्वात्मा त्वं तेज: पौरुषं परम् ॥५॥


त्वम् धर्म:-त्वम्-ऋतम्
you are righteousness, you are sweetness,
सत्यम् त्वम्
truth you are,
यज्ञ:-अखिल-यज्ञ-भुक्
sacrifices all, of the sacrifices the Enjoyer
त्वम् लोक-पाल:
you are the universe's protector
सर्वात्मा त्वम्
of all the soul you are
तेज: पौरुषम् परम्
the effulgence of The Person Supreme

You are righteousness, you are sweetness, you are Truth, you are all sacrifices, you are the enjoyer of all sacrifices, you are the protector of the universe, you are the soul of all, you are the effulgence of The Supreme Person.


नम: सुनाभाखिलधर्मसेतवे ह्यधर्मशीलासुरधूमकेतवे ।

त्रैलोक्यगोपाय विशुद्धवर्चसे मनोजवायाद्भुतकर्मणे गृणे ॥६॥


नम: सुनाभ-
Hail to the one with a beautiful navel
अखिल-धर्म-सेतवे
of all righteousness the upholder
हि-अधर्म-शील-
indeed of the unvirtuous
असुर-धूमकेतवे
the demons fire like destroying
त्रैलोक्य-गोपाय
for the three worlds the shelter
विशुद्ध-वर्चसे
of purest effulgence
मनोजवाय-अद्भुत-कर्मणे गृणे
with mind like speed, of marvellous deeds I pray

Hail to the one with a beautiful navel, the upholder of all righteousness, indeed, of the unvirtuous demons, the fire like destroyer, the shelter of the three worlds, of purest effulgence, with speed like that of thought, of wondrous deeds, I pray to you.


त्वत्तेजसा धर्ममयेन संहृतं तम: प्रकाशश्च धृतो महात्मनाम् ।

दुरत्ययस्ते महिमा गिरां पते त्वद्रूपमेतत् सदसत् परावरम् ॥७॥


त्वत्-तेजसा धर्म-मयेन
by your lustre of righteousness full
संहृतम् तम: प्रकाश:-च
is dispelled the darkness, light and
धृत: महा-आत्मनाम्
is upheld of the great souls
दुरत्यय:-ते महिमा
unfathomable is your glory
गिराम् पते त्वत्-रूपम्-एतत्
O Veda's lord! your form this
सत्-असत् पर-अवरम्
manifest, unmanifest, high, low is illumined

By your lustre, full of righteousness, darkness is dispelled, and the light of the great souls is preserved. O lord of the Vedas! This form of yours is unfathomable and illumines the manifest and the unmanifest, the high and the low.



यदा विसृष्टस्त्वमनञ्जनेन वै बलं प्रविष्टोऽजित दैत्यदानवम् ।

बाहूदरोर्वङ्घ्रिशिरोधराणि वृक्णन्नजस्रं प्रधने विराजसे ॥८॥


यदा विसृष्ट:-त्वम्-
when discharged you
अनञ्जनेन वै बलम् प्रविष्ट:-
by The All Knowing, indeed the army entering
अजित दैत्य-दानवम्
O invincible One! Of the Daityas and Daanavas
बाहु-उदर-उरु-अङ्घ्रि-
arms, trunks, thighs, feet
शिरोधराणि वृक्णन्-अजस्र
necks, chopping off unceasingly
प्रधने विराजसे
in the battle (you) shine brightly

O invincible One! When in the battle you are discharged by The All-knowing Lord, you enter the army and unceasingly chop off the arms, trunks, thighs, feet and necks, of the Daityas and Daanavas, you shine in the battle.


स त्वं जगत्त्राण खलप्रहाणये निरूपित: सर्वसहो गदाभृता ।

विप्रस्य चास्मत्कुलदैवहेतवे विधेहि भद्रं तदनुग्रहो हि न: ॥९॥


स: त्वम् जगत्-त्राण
that you, of the world The Shield
खल-प्रहाणये निरूपित:
for the wicked extermination are directed
सर्व-सह: गदाभृता
all-resisting, by the mace holder (Vishnu)
विप्रस्य च-अस्मत्-कुल-दैव-
of the Braahmana and of our race fortune
हेतवे विधेहि भद्रम्
for good, grant security
तत्-अनुग्रह: हि न:
that request indeed is ours

O Shield of the worlds, that you, the all-resisting, have been directed by the mace holder Lord Vishnu for the extermination of the wicked. For the sake of good fortune for our race, do grant safety to this Braahmana, this is our request.


यद्यस्ति दत्तमिष्टं वा स्वधर्मो वा स्वनुष्ठित: ।

कुलं नो विप्रदैवं चेद् द्विजो भवतु विज्वर: ॥१०॥


यदि-अस्ति दत्तम्-इष्टम्
if it is that I have given the desired
वा स्वधर्म: वा सु-अनुष्ठित:
or my own duty, or well performed
कुलम् न: विप्र-दैवम् चेत्
race ours, the Braahmanas as god treat if
द्विज: भवतु विज्वर:
the Braahmana may be relieved of distress

If, I have given the desired gifts, if I have performed my duties well, if our race is the one which considers the Braahmanas as gods, may this Braahmana be relieved of distress.


यदि नो भगवान् प्रीत एक: सर्वगुणाश्रय: ।

सर्वभूतात्मभावेन द्विजो भवतु विज्वर: ॥११॥


यदि न: भगवान् प्रीत:
if on us, The Lord is pleased
एक: सर्व-गुण-आश्रय:
The One repository of all virtues,
सर्व-भूत-आत्म-भावेन
by our looking on all beings Self like
द्विज: भवतु विज्वर:
the Braahmana may be relieved of pain

If, The repository of all virtues, The Lord is pleased with us, for our looking at all beings as Himself, may the Braahmana be relieved of pain.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इति संस्तुवतो राज्ञो विष्णुचक्रं सुदर्शनम् ।

अशाम्यत् सर्वतो विप्रं प्रदहद् राजयाच्ञया ॥१२॥


इति संस्तुवत: राज्ञ:
thus being prayed by the king
विष्णु-चक्रम् सुदर्शनम्
Vishnu's discus, Sudarshana
अशाम्यत् सर्वत: विप्रम्
stopped from all sides, the Braahmana
प्रदहत् राज-याच्ञया
(which) had scorched by the king's request

Thus, Lord Vishnu's discus, Sudarshana, was being beseeched by the king, and on the king's request, it stopped, who had scorched the Braahmana on all sides.


स मुक्तोऽस्त्राग्नितापेन दुर्वासा: स्वस्तिमांस्तत: ।

प्रशशंस तमुर्वीशं युञ्जान: परमाशिष: ॥१३॥


स: मुक्त:-अस्त्र-अग्नि-तापेन
he, rid of the weapon's fire heat
दुर्वासा: स्वस्तिमान्-तत:
Durvaasaa relieved, then
प्रशशंस तम्-उर्वीशम्
praised him the king
युञ्जान: परम-आशिष:
giving the highest blessings

Then, relieved of the heat of the fire of the weapon, Durvaasaa praised the king and gave him the highest blessings.


दुर्वासा उवाच -
Durvaasaa said -
अहो अनन्तदासानां महत्त्वं दृष्टमद्य मे ।

कृतागसोऽपि यद् राजन् मङ्गलानि समीहसे ॥१४॥


अहो अनन्त-दासानाम्
'Ah! Of Ananta's servants'
महत्त्वम् दृष्टम्-अद्य मे
glory is seen today by me
कृत-आगस:-अपि यत् राजन्
having committed sin also, in that, the King!
मङ्गलानि समीहसे
well being wish

'O King! The glory of the servants of The infinite Lord is seen by me today, in that you wish well for even the person who has committed sin.'


दुष्कर: को नु साधुनां दुस्त्यजो वा महात्मनाम् ।

यै: संगृहीतो भगवान् सात्वतामृषभो हरि: ॥१५॥


दुष्कर: क: नु साधुनाम्
impossible what (is) indeed for the noble
दुस्त्यज: वा महात्मनाम्
difficult to abandon or for the great souled
यै: संगृहीत: भगवान्
by whom is installed The Lord (in the heart)
सात्वताम्-ऋषभ: हरि:
of the devotee lover's the scion Shree Hari

'What is there which is impossible to do, by the noble, or difficult to be given up by the great souls, who have Lord Shree Hari installed in their hearts, The Scion of the devotee lovers.'


यन्नामश्रुतिमात्रेण पुमान् भवति निर्मल: ।

तस्य तीर्थपद: किं वा दासानामवशिष्यते ॥१६॥


यत्-नाम-श्रुति-मात्रेण
Whose name hearing even
पुमान् भवति निर्मल:
person becomes pure
तस्य तीर्थ-पद: किम् वा
His holy feet's what or
दासानाम्-अवशिष्यते
for the servants is wanting

Just by hearing Whose name, a person becomes pure, what is wanting for the servants of His holy feet?


राजन्ननुगृहीतोऽहं त्वयातिकरुणात्मना ।

मदघं पृष्ठत: कृत्वा प्राणा यन्मेऽभिरक्षिता: ॥१७॥


राजन्-अनुगृहीत:-अहम्
O King! obliged am I
त्वया-अति-करुणा-आत्मना
by you very compassionate self
मत्-अघम् पृष्ठत: कृत्वा
my sin in the back keeping
प्राणा: यत्-मे-अभिरक्षिता:
life that mine is saved

'O King! I am obliged by your very compassionate self, in that, overlooking my mistake you have saved my life.'


राजा तमकृताहार: प्रत्यागमनकाङ्क्षया ।

चरणावुपसंगृह्य प्रसाद्य समभोजयत् ॥१८॥


राजा तम्-अकृत-आहार:
the king, him, having not eaten
प्रत्यागमन-काङ्क्षया
of returning expecting
चरणौ-उपसंगृह्य
feet clasping
प्रसाद्य समभोजयत्
gratified and fed well

The king who had not taken his meal, expecting him to return, gratified him by clasping his feet and then fed him well.


सोऽशित्वाऽऽदृतमानीतमातिथ्यं सार्वकामिकम् ।

तृप्तात्मा नृपतिं प्राह भुज्यतामिति सादरम् ॥१९॥


स:-अशित्वा-आदृतम्-आनीतम्-
he, having eaten, respectfully brought
आतिथ्यम् सार्वकामिकम्
fit for a guest, all tastes satisfying
तृप्त-आत्मा नृपतिं प्राह
sated at heart, to the king said
भुज्यताम्-इति सादरम्
'Do eat' thus with respect

After having taken the food fit for the guest and satisfying all the tastes, which was brought respectfully, sated at heart, he said to the king, respectfully, 'Do eat.'


प्रीतोऽस्म्यनुगृहीतोस्मि तव भागवतस्य वै ।

दर्शनस्पर्शनालापैरातिथ्येनात्ममेधसा ॥२०॥


प्रीत:-अस्मि-अनुगृहीत:-अस्मि
delighted am I, obliged am I
तव भागवतस्य वै
of you, the devotee of The Lord's
दर्शन-स्पर्शन-अलापै:-
sight, touch, talk
आतिथ्येन-आत्म-मेधसा
and hospitality, self uplifting

'I am delighted and obliged by the sight, touch, talk and hospitality of a great devotee of The Lord like you, which is very self-uplifting.'


कर्मावदातमेतत् ते गायन्ति स्व: स्त्रियो मुहु: ।

कीर्तिं परमपुण्यां च कीर्तयिष्यति भूरियम् ॥२१॥


कर्म-अवदातम्-एतत् ते
deed glorious, this yours
गायन्ति स्व: स्त्रिय: मुहु:
will sing of, the celestial women repeatedly
कीर्तिम् परम-पुण्याम् च
fame highly pious and
कीर्तयिष्यति भू:-इयम्
will proclaim the earth this

The celestial women will repeatedly sing of this highly pious deed of yours, and this earth will proclaim your highly pious fame.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं संकीर्त्य राजानं दुर्वासा: परितोषित: ।

ययौ विहायसाऽऽमन्त्र्य ब्रह्मलोकमहैतुकम् ॥२२॥


एवम् संकीर्त्य राजानम्
thus applauding the king,
दुर्वासा: परितोषित:
Durvaasaa gratified
ययौ विहायसा-आमन्त्र्य
went through the heaven, taking permission
ब्रह्मलोकम्-अहैतुकम्
to Brahmaloka, attainable by desire less actions

Durvaasaa, thus applauding the king, and taking his permission, went gratified through heaven to Brahmaloka which is attainable only through desire less actions.


सम्वत्सरोऽत्यगात् तावद् यावता नागतो गत: ।

मुनिस्तद्दर्शनाकाङ्क्षो राजाऽब्भक्षो बभूव ह ॥23॥


सम्वत्सर:-अत्यगात् तावत्
one year passed
यावता न-आगत: गत:
till then, until did not come and go
मुनि:-तत्-दर्शन-आकाङ्क्ष:
the sage, his sight seeking
राजा-अप्-भक्ष: बभूव ह
the king water drinking became indeed

Till then one year passed until when the sage did come and go. His sight seeking, the king subsisted on water alone.


गते च दुर्वाससि सोऽम्बरीषो द्विजोपयोगातिपवित्रमाहरत् ।

ऋषेर्विमोक्षं व्यसनं च बुद्ध्वा मेने स्ववीर्यं च परानुभावम् ॥२४॥


गते च दुर्वाससि
after having left, Durvaasaa
स:-अम्बरीष: द्विज-उपयोग-
he, Ambareesha, by the Braahmana used
अति-पवित्रम्-आहरत्
very pure (food) ate
ऋषे:-विमोक्षम् व्यसनम् च
the sage's redemption, plight and
बुद्ध्वा मेने स्व-वीर्यम्
understanding considered own endeavour
च पर-अनुभावम्
and The Supreme's indication

After the sage Durvaasaa had left, king Ambareesha ate the food left by the sage, which was very pure. He then, understood the plight and redemption of the sage and even his own firmness in subsisting on water, and considered that an indication of the Supreme's glory.


एवं विधानेकगुण: स राजा परात्मनि ब्रह्मणि वासुदेवे ।

क्रियाकलापै: समुवाह भक्तिं ययाऽऽविरिञ्च्यान् निरयांश्चकार ॥२५॥


एवम् विध-अनेक-गुण:
such like many virtues having
स राजा परात्मनि
the king, in the Supreme Self
ब्रह्मणि वासुदेवे
Brahman, Vaasudeva
क्रिया-कलापै: समुवाह
by (his)activities increased
भक्तिम् यया विरिञ्च्यान्
devotion by which, the Brahmaa's (position)
निरयान्-चकार
meaningless like rendered

Having such qualities, and by his many such activities, and with devotion to The Supreme Soul Brahman, Vaasudeva, he rendered the position of Brahmaa as meaningless.


अथाम्बरीषस्तनयेषु राज्यं समानशीलेषु विसृज्य धीर: ।

वनं विवेशात्मनि वासुदेवे मनो दधद् ध्वस्तगुणप्रवाह: ॥२६॥


अथ-अम्बरीष:-तनयेषु
then, Ambareesha to the sons
राज्यम् समान-शीलेषु
the kingdom, of same temperament
विसृज्य धीर:
giving up, the wise
वनम् विवेश-आत्मनि
to the forest retired, on his own self,
वासुदेवे मन: दधद्
and Vaasudeva mind fixed
ध्वस्त-गुण-प्रवाह:
ending the transcending course

Then, the wise Ambareesha, entrusted the kingdom to his sons who were of the same temperament as his. Then, he retired to the forest with his mind fixed on Lord Vaasudeva, his own self, and eventually ending the course of transmigration.


इत्येतत् पुण्यमाख्यानमम्बरीषस्य भूपते: ।

संकीर्तयन्ननुध्यायन् भक्तो भगवतो भवेत् ॥२७॥


इति-एतत् पुण्यम्-आख्यानम्-
thus this sacred story
अम्बरीषस्य भूपते:
of Ambareesha, the king
संकीर्तयन्-अनुध्यायन्
repeatedly recites and thinks of
भक्त: भगवत: भवेत्
the devotee of The Lord becomes

Thus, this sacred story of the king Ambareesha, whoever repeatedly recites and thinks about, becomes a devotee of The Lord.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां नवमे स्कन्धे अम्बरीष-चरित्रं नाम पञ्चम: अध्याय: ॥५॥


Thus ends the fifth discourse entitled 'The story of Ambareesha', in Book Nine of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
