Shree Shuka said -
खट्वाङ्गाद् दीर्घबाहुश्च रघुस्तस्मात् पृथुश्रवा: ।
अजस्ततो महाराजस्तस्माद् दशरथोऽभवत् ॥१॥
खट्वाङ्गाद् दीर्घबाहु:-च
from Khatwaanga Deerghabaahu and
रघु:-तस्मात् पृथु-श्रवा:
Raghu from him of great renown
अज:-तत: महाराज:-
Aja then the great king
तस्मात् दशरथ:-अभवत्
from him Dasharatha was born
From Khatwaanga Deerghabaahu was born, from him Raghu of great renown, then Aja the great king and from him Dasharatha was born.
तस्यापि भगवानेष साक्षाद् ब्रह्ममयो हरि: ।
अंशांशेन चतुर्धागात् पुत्रत्वं प्रार्थित: सुरै: ।
रामलक्ष्मणभरतशत्रुघ्ना इति संज्ञया ॥२॥
तस्य-अपि भगवान्-एष:

अंश-अंशेन चतुर्धा-अगात्
with His part's part in four went

Raama, Lakshmana, Bharata,
शत्रुघ्न- इति संज्ञया
Shatrughna thus named
The Brahman constituting, Lord Shree Hari Himself, entreated by the gods, by His part's part went as sons to him, Dasharatha, named as Raama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna.
तस्यानुचरितं राजन्नृषिभिस्तत्त्वदर्शिभि: ।
श्रुतं हि वर्णितं भूरि त्वया सीतापतेर्मुहु: ॥३॥
तस्य-अनुचरितम् राजन्-
His story, O King!
ऋषिभि:-तत्त्व-दर्शिभि:
by the sages, the Truth realized
श्रुतम् हि वर्णितम् भूरि
has been heard indeed, described in detail
त्वया सीता-पते:-मुहु:
by you, of Sitaa's husbands many times
O King! The story of Sitaa's husband has been described in detail, by the Truth realized sages, and you have heard it many times.
गुर्वर्थे त्यक्तराज्यो व्यचरदनुवनं पद्मपद्भ्यां प्रियाया:
पाणिस्पर्शाक्षमाभ्यां मृजितपथरुजो यो हरीन्द्रानुजाभ्याम् ।
वैरूप्याच्छूर्पणख्या: प्रियविरहरुषाऽऽरोपितभ्रूविजृम्भ-
त्रस्ताब्धिर्बद्धसेतु: खलदवदहन: कोसलेन्द्रोऽवतान्न: ॥४॥
गुरु-अर्थे त्यक्त-राज्य:
for father's sake abandoning the kingdom
व्यचरत्-अनुवनम्
roaming forest to forest
पद्म-पद्भ्याम् प्रियाया:
with lotus feet, beloved's
पाणि-स्पर्श-अक्षमाभ्याम्
hands touch not bearing
मृजित-पथ-रुज: य:
relieved the path's fatigue, Who
हरीन्द्र-अनुजाभ्याम्
by the monkey chief and younger brother
वैरूप्यात्-शूर्पणख्या:
by distorting the look of Shoorpanakhaa
प्रिय-विरह-रुषा-
for the beloved's separation, angered
आरोपित-भ्रू-विजृम्भ-
placed the eyebrows knit
त्रस्त-अब्धि:-बद्ध-सेतु:
tormented the ocean, built a bridge
खल-दव-दहन:
of the wicked forest fire like consuming
कोसलेन्द्र:-अवतात्-न:
Kosala' Lord may protect us
May Kosala' Lord protect us, Who, for the sake of His father abandoned the kingdom and roamed from forest to forest on His lotus feet and did not bear the touch of His beloved's hand. He was relieved of the fatigue of the path by the monkey chief, Hanuman and His brother Lakshmana. For having distorted the look of Shoorpanakhaa, He was separated from His beloved Sitaa, and knit His eyebrows in anger, He tormented the ocean and built a bridge over it, and wiped off the wicked, like a forest fire consuming the forest.
विश्वामित्राध्वरे येन मारीचाद्या निशाचरा: ।
पश्यतो लक्ष्मणस्यैव हता नैरृतपुङ्गवा: ॥५॥
विश्वामित्र-अध्वरे येन
in Vishvaamitra's sacrifice, by Whom
मारीच-आद्या: निशाचरा:
Mareechi and other night roaming demons
पश्यत: लक्ष्मणस्य-
as looked on Lakshmana
एव हता: नैरृत-पुङ्गवा:
only were killed the demon chiefs
During the sacrifice being performed by Vishwaamitra, Who killed the night roaming demons like Mareechi and other demon chiefs, even as Lakshmana looked on.
यो लोकवीरसमितौ धनुरैशमुग्रं सीतास्वयंवरगृहे त्रिशतोपनीतम् ।
आदाय बालगजलील इवेक्षुयष्टिं सज्जीकृतं नृप विकृष्य बभञ्ज मध्ये ॥६॥
यो लोक-वीर-समितौ
Who, in the world's heroes assembly
धनु:-ईशम्-उग्रम्
the bow of Lord Shiva, the formidable
सीता-स्वयंवर-गृहे
in Sita's choice marriage hall
त्रि-शत-उपनीतम्
by three hundred (men) brought
आदाय बाल-गज-लील
taking like a child elephant's sport
इव-इक्षु-यष्टिम् सज्जीकृतम्
like sugarcane staff, strung,
नृप विकृष्य बभञ्ज मध्ये
O King! pulled and broke in the middle
Who, in the assembly of the heroes of the world, in Sita's choice-marriage hall, took up the formidable bow of Lord Shiva, brought in by three hundred men, strung it and drawing it broke it in the middle, even as a child elephant would sportingly break a staff of sugarcane.
जित्वानुरूपगुणशीलवयोऽङ्गरूपां सीताभिधां श्रियमुरस्यभिलब्धमानाम् ।
मार्गे व्रजन् भृगुपतेर्व्यनयत् प्ररूढं दर्पं महीमकृत यस्त्रिरराजबीजाम् ॥७॥
जित्वा-अनुरूप-गुण-
having won, equal in virtues
शील-वयो:-अङ्ग-रूपाम्
nature, age, limbs' beauty
सीता-अभिधाम् श्रियम्-उरसि-
Sita called, Shree, on the bosom
अभिलब्ध-मानाम्
acquired honour
मार्गे व्रजन् भृगुपते:-
on the path going of the Bhrigus' the chief
व्यनयत् प्ररूढम् दर्पम्
brought down the raised pride
महीम्-अकृत य:-
the earth had rendered who
त्रि:-अराज-बीजाम्
three into seven times Kshatriya seed less
Having won Shri, by the name of Sita, who was a match with his virtues, nature, age and beauty of limbs, and had gained the place of honour in His bosom. Then, He brought down the escalated pride of the chief of the Bhrigu race, Parashuraama, who was going that way, and who, three times seven had rendered the earth seed-less of the Kshatriya race.
य: सत्यपाशपरिवीतपितुर्निदेशं स्त्रैणस्य चापि शिरसा जगृहे सभार्य: ।
राज्यं श्रियं प्रणयिन: सुहृदो निवासं त्यक्त्वा ययौ वनमसूनिव मुक्तसङ्ग: ॥८॥
य: सत्य-पाश-परिवीत-
Who, in truth snare caught
पितु:-निदेशम् स्त्रेणस्य च-अपि
father's orders uxorious and even
शिरसा जगृहे सभार्य:
with bowed head accepted with His wife
राज्यम् श्रियम् प्रणयिन:
the kingdom, the fortune, loving relatives
सुहृद: निवासम् त्यक्त्वा
friends, residence, relinquished
ययौ वनम्-
went to the forest
असून्-इव मुक्त-सङ्ग:
life like one free of attachment
Who, with his head bowed, along with His wife, accepted the command of his father, who though uxorious, was bound by the snares of truthfulness, and relinquished the kingdom, the fortune, the loving relatives, friends, residence and went to the forest, like an ascetic free of attachment gives up life.
रक्ष:स्वसुर्व्यकृत रूपमशुद्धबुद्धेस्तस्या: खरत्रिशिरदूषणमुख्यबन्धून् ।
जघ्ने चतुर्दशसहस्रमपारणीयकोदण्डपाणिरटमान उवास कृच्छ्रम् ॥९॥
रक्ष:-स्वसु:-व्यकृत रूपम्-
the Raakshasha sister's distorted looks,
अशुद्ध-बुद्धे:-तस्या:
of deceitful mind, her
खर-त्रिशिर-दूषण-मुख्य-बन्धून्
Khara, Trishiraa and Dooshana main brothers
जघ्ने चतुर्दशसहस्रम्-
killed fourteen thousand
अपारणीय-कोदण्ड-पाणि:-
with invincible bow carrying in hand
अटमान उवास कृच्छ्रम्
roamed and lived in difficulty
He disfigured the looks of the Raakshasha's sister of a deceitful mind, and killed fourteen thousand of her men, Khara, Trishiraa and Dooshana being the main brothers. He roamed about in the forest carrying the irresistible bow, and lived a difficult life.
सीताकथाश्रवणदीपितहृच्छयेन सृष्टं विलोक्य नृपते दशकन्धरेण ।
जघ्नेऽद्भुतैणवपुषाऽऽश्रमतोऽपकृष्टो-मारीचमाशु विशिखेन यथा कमुग्र: ॥१०॥
सीता-कथा-श्रवण-
Sita's account having heard

नृपते दशकन्धरेण
O King! By Raavana
जघ्ने-अद्भुत-ऐण-वपुषा-

from His hermitage drawn
मारीचम्-आशु
Mareechi soon
विशिखेन यथा कम्-उग्र:
by arrow just as Daksha by Veerabhadra
O King! On hearing the account of Sita, Raavana's passion was enkindled and he created of Mareechi a strange embodied deer, seeing which Raama was drawn from his hermitage and soon killed him with an arrow just as Veerabhadra had killed Daksha.
रक्षोऽधमेन वृकवद् विपिनेऽसमक्षं वैदेहराजदुहितर्यपयापितायाम् ।
भ्रात्रा वने कृपणवत् प्रियया वियुक्त: स्त्रीसङ्गिनां गतिमिति प्रथयंश्चचार ॥११॥
रक्ष:-अधमेन वृक-वत्
by the Raakshasha lowly, wolf like
विपिने-असमक्षम्
in the forest, at his back,
वैदेहराज-दुहितरि-अपयापितायाम्
on Videha king's daughter, forcefully taken away
भ्रात्रा वने कृपण-वत्
with the brother in the forest like a pitiable
प्रियया वियुक्त:
from the beloved separated
स्त्री-सङ्गिनाम् गतिम्-
of the women attached, state
इति प्रथयन्-चचार
this exemplifying went about
When, in the forest, the daughter of the Videha king was forcefully abducted by the lowly Raakshasha, Raavana, like a wolf would snatch a sheep, He, Raama, went about in the forest with his brother lamenting for his beloved exemplifying the pitiable state of those attached to women.
दग्ध्वाऽऽत्मकृत्यहतकृत्यमहन् कबन्धं सख्यं विधाय कपिभिर्दयितागतिं तै: ।
बुद्ध्वाथ वालिनि हते प्लवगेन्द्र सैन्यैर्वेलामगात् स मनुजोऽजभवार्चिताङ्घ्रि: ॥१२॥
दग्ध्वा-आत्म-कृत्य-
cremating (Jataayu) who by his own Karma
हत-कृत्यम्-अहन् कबन्धम्
had wiped his Karmas, killing Kabandha
सख्यम् विधाय कपिभि:-
friendship making with the monkeys,
दयिता-गतिम् तै: बुद्ध्वा-
wife's state from them knowing
अथ वालिनि हते
then Bali being killed
प्लवगेन्द्र सैन्यै:-वेलाम्-अगात्
with monkeys' army to the sea shore went
स: मनुज:-अज-भव-अर्चित-अङ्घ्रि:
That Man, by Brahmaa, Shiva, worshipped feet
The Lord as That Man, Whose feet Brahmaa and Shiva worship, cremated Jataayu, who had nullified his own set of Karmas by his own Karma, killed Kabandha, made friendship with the monkeys, and from them got the news of His wife, then, killing Bali, went with the army of the monkeys to the sea shore.
यद्रोषविभ्रमविवृत्तकटाक्षपात-संभ्रान्तनक्रमकरो भयगीर्णघोष: ।
सिन्धु: शिरस्यर्हणं परिगृह्य रूपी पादारविन्दमुपगम्य बभाष एतत् ॥१३॥
यत्-रोष-विभ्रम-
by Whose anger seeming
विवृत्त-कटाक्ष-पात-
fierce glance cast
संभ्रान्त-नक्र-मकर:
invested with crocodiles and alligators
भय-गीर्ण-घोष: सिन्धु:
by fear silenced the roar, the ocean,
शिरसि-अर्हणम्
on his head worshipping articles (carrying)
परिगृह्य रूपी
taking on living form
पाद-अरविन्दम्-उपगम्य
feet lotus approaching
बभाष एतत्
said this
The ocean, invested with crocodiles and alligators, their roar silenced by His seeming anger caused fierce glance, came in the form of a living being, carrying on his head the articles of worship, and approaching the lotus feet, said this,…
न त्वां वयं जडधियो नु विदाम भूमन् कूटस्थमादिपुरुषं जगतामधीशम् ।
यत्सत्त्वत: सुरगणा रजस: प्रजेशा मन्योश्च भूतपतय: स भवान् गुणेश: ॥१४॥
न त्वाम् वयम् जड-धिय:
not You, we, dull minded
नु विदाम भूमन् कूटस्थम्-
indeed know O Infinite Lord! The indwelling
आदि-पुरुषम् जगताम्-अधीशम्
Primary Person, of the worlds The Ruler
यत्-सत्त्वत: सुर-गणा:
from Whose Sattva the gods' hosts
रजस: प्रजेशा:
Raja the lords of created beings
मन्यो:-च भूतपतय:
Tamasa and the lords of ghosts
स: भवान् गुणेश:
That You are The Lord of Prakriti
'We, the dull minded, indeed do not know You, O Infinite Lord! The indwelling Primary Person, The Ruler of the worlds, from Whose Sattva the gods' hosts, from Rajas the lords of created beings, and fromTamasa the lords of ghosts, have sprung up, That You, are The Lord of Prakriti.'
कामं प्रयाहि जहि विश्रवसोऽवमेहं त्रैलोक्यरावणमनवाप्नुहि वीर पत्नीम् ।
बध्नीहि सेतुमिह ते यशसो वितत्ये गायन्ति दिग्विजयिनो यमुपेत्य भूपा: ॥१५॥
कामम् प्रयाहि जहि विश्रवस:-
at will proceed, kill (the son of) Vishravaa
अवमेहम् त्रैलोक्य रावणम्-
the cause of weeping of the three worlds, Raavana,
अनवाप्नुहि वीर पत्नीम्
recover indeed, O Brave One, Your wife
बध्नीहि सेतुम्-इह
construct a bridge here
ते यशस: वितत्ये
your fame to expand
गायन्ति दिग्विजयिन:
will sing the conquerors of the directions
यम्-उपेत्य भूपा:
which reaching the kings
Proceed at will and kill the son of Vishravaa, Raavana, the cause why the three worlds weep. Recover your wife O Brave One, and construct a bridge over here, to expand Your fame, and approaching which, the kings, the conquerors of the direction will sing Your glory.'
बद्ध्वोदधौ रघुपतिर्विविधाद्रिकूटै: सेतुं कपीन्द्रकरकम्पितभूरुहाङ्गै: ।
सुग्रीवनीलहनुमत्प्रमुखैरनीकैर्लङ्कां विभीषणदृशाऽऽविशदग्रदग्धाम् ॥१६॥
बद्ध्वा-उदधौ रघुपति:-
constructed on the ocean Raghupati
विविध-अद्रि-कूटै: सेतुम्
by various mountain rocks the bridge
कपीन्द्र-कर-कम्पित
by the monkey chiefs pulled out
भूरुह-अङ्गै:
trees with roots
सुग्रीव-नील-हनुमत्-प्रमुखै:-अनीकै:-
Sugreeva, Neela, Hanumaan, the leading army,
लङ्काम् विभीषण-दृशा-
in Lankaa by Vibhishana's advice
अविशत्-अग्र-दग्धाम्
entered formerly burnt
Raghupati constructed a bridge on the ocean with various mountain rocks and trees uprooted by the leading monkey chiefs, Sugreeva, Neela, Hanumaan, and on the advice of Vibheeshana, with the army, entered Lankaa, which had been burnt previously.
सा वानरेन्द्रबलरुद्धविहारकोष्ठश्रीद्वारगोपुरसदोवलभीविटङ्का ।
निर्भज्यमानधिषणध्वजहेमकुम्भशृङ्गाटका गजकुलैर्ह्रदिनीव घूर्णा ॥१७॥
सा वानर-इन्द्र-बल-
she (Lankaa) by the monkey chief's army
रुद्ध-विहार-कोष्ठ- श्रीद्वार-
was seized the gardens, granaries, doorways,
गोपुर-सदोवलभी-विटङ्का
city gates, meeting halls, porticos,
निर्भज्यमान-धिषण-ध्वज-
destroyed platforms, flags,
हेम-कुम्भ-शृङ्ग-अटका:
pitchers of gold, the cross roads
गज-कुलै:-ह्रदिन-इव घूर्णा
by elephants herds river like churned
She, Lankaa, with the gardens, granaries, doorways, city gates, meeting halls, porticos, were occupied by the chiefs of the monkey army, and the platforms, flags, pitchers of gold, the cross roads, destroyed, the city was dis-shevelled like the river is churned by a herd of elephants.
रक्ष:पतिस्तदवलोक्य निकुम्भकुम्भधूम्राक्षदुर्मुखसुरान्तनरान्तकादीन् ।
पुत्रं प्रहस्तमतिकायविकम्पनादीन् सर्वानुगान् समहिनोदथ कुम्भकर्णम् ॥१८॥
रक्ष:पति:-तत्-अवलोक्य
the Raakshasha lord that perceiving
निकुम्भ-कुम्भ-धूम्राक्ष-दुर्मुख-
Nikumbha, Kumbha, Dhoomraaksha, Durmukha,
सुरान्त-नरान्तक-आदीन्
Suraanta, Naraantaka, and others
पुत्रम् प्रहस्तम्-अतिकाय-
son, Prahasta, Atikaaya,
विकम्पन्-आदीन् सर्व-अनुगान्
Vikampana, and others all followers
समहिनोत्-अथ-कुम्भकर्णम्
sent then Kumbhakarna
The lord of the Raakshasha's, perceiving this, sent all his followers, Nikumbha, Kumbha, Dhoomraaksha, Durmukha, Suraanta, Naraantaka, and others, son Meghanaada,, Prahasta, Atikaaya, Vikampana, and others and then Kumbhakarna to face the army.
तां यातुधानपृतनामसिशूलचापप्रासर्ष्टिशक्तिशरतोमरखड्गदुर्गाम् ।
सुग्रीवलक्ष्मणमरुत्सुतगन्धमादनीलाङ्गदर्क्षपनसादिभिरन्वितोऽगात् ॥१९॥
ताम् यातुधान-पृतनाम्-
that demon army, (armed with)
असि-शूल-चाप-प्रास-ऋष्टि-
swords, tridents, bows, spears, double-edged swords,
शक्ति-शर-तोमर-खड्ग-दुर्गाम्
bolts, arrows, clubs, and axes, impenetrable
सुग्रीव-लक्ष्मण-मरुत्सुत-
by Sugreeva, Lakshmana, Hanumaan,
गन्धमाद-नील-अङ्गद-ऋक्ष-
Gandhamaadana, Neela, Angada, Riksha,
पनस-आदिभि:-अन्वित:-अगात्
Panas and others, accompanied, met
Raama, accompanied by Sugreeva, Lakshmana, Hanumaan, Gandhamaadana, Neela, Angada, Riksha, Panas and others met the army of the demons which was difficult to penetrate as it was armed with swords, tridents, bows, spears, double-edged swords, bolts, arrows, clubs, and axes.
तेऽनीकपा रघुपतेरभिपत्य सर्वे द्वन्द्वं वरूथमिभपत्तिरथाश्वयोधै: ।
जघ्नुर्द्रुमैर्गिरिगदेषुभिरङ्गदाद्या: सीताभिमर्शहतमङ्गलरावणेशान् ॥२०॥
ते-अनीकपा: रघुपते:-अभिपत्य
they, the generals of Raghupati, entering into
सर्वे द्वन्द्वम् वरूथम्-
all in duet combat the army,
इभ-पत्ति-रथ-अश्व-योधै:
of elephants, foot soldiers, chariots, horses, heroes
जघ्नु:-द्रुमै:-गिरि-गदा-इषुभि:-
killed with trees, rocks, maces, arrows,
अङ्गद-आद्या: सीता-अभिमर्श-हत-
Angada and others, by Sitaa's abduction hit
मङ्गल-रावण-ईशान्
the good luck of Raavana their master
The army generals of Raghupati, Angada and others, entered into duet combats with the army consisting of elephants, foot soldiers, chariots, horses, and heroes, and killed them with trees rocks, maces, arrows, the demons whose good luck was hit by their master's abduction of Sita.
रक्ष:पति: स्वबलनष्टिमवेक्ष्य रुष्ट आरुह्य यानकमथाभिससार रामम् ।
स्व:स्यन्दने द्युमति मातलिनोपनीते विभ्राजमानमहनन्निशितै: क्षुरप्रै: ॥२१॥
रक्ष:पति: स्व-बल-नष्टिम्-
the Raakshasha's lord own army destroyed
अवेक्ष्य रुष्ट: आरुह्य यानकम्-
seeing angered, mounting a chariot
अथ-अभिससार रामम्
then faced Raama
स्व:-स्यन्दने द्युमति
in the heavenly chariot lustrous
मातलिना-उपनीते विभ्राजमानम्-
by Maatali brought, shining brightly
अहनत्-निशितै: क्षुरप्रै:
charged with sharp arrows
The lord of the Raakshasha's, Raavana, was angered at seeing the destruction of his army. He mounted his Ariel car and faced Raama, Who was seated and looked bright in the lustrous heavenly chariot brought in by Maatali, and charged sharp arrows at Him.
रामस्तमाह पुरुषादपुरीष यन्न: कान्तासमक्षमसतापहृता श्ववत् ते ।
त्यक्तत्रपस्य फलमद्य जुगुप्सितस्य यच्छामि काल इव कर्तुरलङ्घ्यवीर्य: ॥२२॥
राम:-तम्-आह पुरुषाद-पुरीष
Raama to him said, 'O human flesh eater! Unholy!
यत्-न: कान्ता-असमक्षम्-
that our spouse, in absence,
असता-अपहृता श्व-वत् ते
by you the wicked, stolen dog like, to you
त्यक्त-त्रपस्य फलम्-अद्य
the shameless, will award the fruit
जुगुप्सितस्य यच्छामि
of your detested action, will give,
काल इव कर्तु:-अलङ्घ्य-वीर्य:
Time like does, can not be prevailed upon prowess
Raama said to him, 'O unholy human flesh eater! As my prowess cannot be prevailed upon like that of Time for a sinner, I will award to you, O wicked one! the fruit of your detestable action, in that you stole our spouse in our absence like a dog.
एवं क्षिपन् धनुषि संधितमुत्ससर्ज बाणं स वज्रमिव तद्धृदयं बिभेद ।
सोऽऽसृग् वमन् दशमुखैर्न्यपतद् विमानात् हाहेति जल्पति जने सुकृतीव रिक्त: ॥२३॥
एवम् क्षिपन् धनुषि संधितम्-
thus reprimanding, on the bow placed
उत्ससर्ज बाणम् स: वज्रम्-इव
charged the arrow, He thunderbolt like
तत्-हृदयम् बिभेद
his heart piercing
स:-असृग् वमन् दश-मुखै:-
he vomited blood from ten mouths
न्यपतद् विमानात् हा-हा-इति
fell from the Ariel car, 'Oh my! Oh my!
जल्पति जने सुकृतीव रिक्त:
saying the men, of merits exhausted
Thus reprimanding him, He charged the arrow like a thunderbolt, which He had fitted on the bow, and pierced his heart. He vomited blood from his ten mouths, and fell from his Ariel car, like a man having exhausted his merits, as the men cried, 'Oh my! Oh my!'

Then with Mandodari, thousands of Raakshasha women came out from Lankaa and rushed there weeping bitterly.
स्वान् स्वान् बन्धून् परिष्वज्य लक्ष्मणेषुभिरर्दितान् ।
रुरुदु: सुस्वरं दीना घ्नन्त्य आत्मानमात्मना ॥२५॥
स्वान् स्वान् बन्धून् परिष्वज्य
each one own dear ones embracing
लक्ष्मण-इषुभि:-अर्दितान्
by Lakshmana's arrows killed
रुरुदु: सुस्वरम् दीना:
wailed loudly helpless,
घ्नन्त्य: आत्मानम्-आत्मना
beating themselves by themselves
Each one embraced their own dear ones, who were killed by Lakshmana's arrows, and they wailed loudly, beating themselves by themselves.
हा हता: स्म वयं नाथ लोकरावण रावण ।
कं यायाच्छरणं लङ्का त्वद्विहीना परार्दिता ॥२६॥
हा हता: स्म वयम् नाथ
' Alas! Struck are we, O lord!
लोक-रावण रावण
the world tormentor Raavana
कम् यायात्-शरणम्
who do we seek protection
लङ्का त्वत्-विहीना पर-अर्दिता
Lankaa devoid of you, is by others trampled
'Alas! We are struck, O lord! The tormentor of the world, Raavana, Lanka devoid of you is trampled by others, to whom do we look for protection?'
नैवं वेद महाभाग भवान् कामवशंगत: ।
तेजोऽनुभावं सीताया येन नीतो दशामिमाम् ॥२७॥
न-एवम् वेद महाभाग
did not this know, O highly blessed one!
भवान् काम-वशम्-गत:
You, by passion overcome
तेज:-अनुभावम् सीताया:
the glory's power of Sita,
येन नीत: दशाम्-इमाम्
by which fallen to this state
'O highly blessed one! Overcome by passion, you did not know the power of Sita's glory, by which you have fallen to this state.'
कृतैषा विधवा लङ्का वयं च कुलनन्दन ।
देह: कृतोऽन्नं गृध्राणामात्मा नरकहेतवे ॥२८॥
कृता-एषा विधवा लङ्का
rendered this widow is Lankaa
वयम् च कुलनन्दन
we and, O delighter of the race!
देह: कृत:-अन्नम् गृध्राणाम्-
body is reduced to food for vultures
आत्मा नरक-हेतवे
and the soul for hell fit
'Lanka as well as we are made widows, O delighter of your race! Your body is reduced to food for the vultures and your soul has become fit for hell.'
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
स्वानां विभीषणश्चक्रे कोसलेन्द्रानुमोदित: ।
पितृमेधविधानेन यदुक्तं साम्परायिकम् ॥२९॥
स्वानाम् विभीषण:-चक्रे
of his own people Vibheeshana conducted
कोसलेन्द्र-अनुमोदित:
by Kosala's lord's command
पितृमेध-विधानेन
the manes to propitiate, by the procedure
यत्-उक्तम् साम्परायिकम्
what was stated of cremation rites
Commanded by the Lord of Kosala, Raama, Vibheeshana conducted the cremation of his own men according to what is said in the procedure laid down to propitiate the manes.
ततो ददर्श भगवानशोकवनिकाश्रमे ।
क्षामां स्वविरहव्याधिं शिंशपामूलमास्थिताम् ॥३०॥
तत: ददर्श भगवान्-
after that saw The Lord
अशोक-वनिका-आश्रमे
in Ashoka forest hermitage
क्षामाम् स्व-विरह-व्याधिम्
emaciated His separation disease
शिंशपा-मूलम्-आस्थिताम्
in Shimshipa's foot seated
After that, The Lord saw, His wife Sitaa, in the hermitage of the Ashoka forest, emaciated by the disease of His separation, seated at the foot of the Shimshipa's tree.
राम: प्रियतमां भार्यां दीनां वीक्ष्यान्वकम्पत ।
आत्मसंदर्शनाह्लादविकसन्मुखपङ्कजाम् ॥३१॥
राम: प्रियतमाम् भार्याम्
Raama, most beloved wife
दीनाम् वीक्ष्य-अन्वकम्पत
emaciated seeing was compassionate
आत्म-संदर्शन-आह्लाद-
by own self's vision joy
विकसत्-मुख-पङ्कजाम्
blooming face lotus
Raama was compassionate seeing His beloved wife emaciated, and by the vision of His own self, her face lotus was blooming with joy.
आरोप्यारुरुहे यानं भ्रातृभ्यां हनुमद्युत: ।
विभीषणाय भगवान् दत्त्वा रक्षोगणेशताम् ॥३२॥
आरोप्य-आरुरुहे यानम्
(making her) alight, He alighted the vehicle
भ्रातृभ्याम् हनुमत्-युत:
with the two brothers, Hanumaan along with
विभीषणाय भगवान् दत्त्वा
for Vibheeshana The Lord gave
रक्षोगण-ईशताम्
Of the Raakshasha's' hosts the ruler ship
Helping Sita into the vehicle, He alighted it along with His two brothers and Hanumaan. For Vibheeshana, The Lord gave the ruler ship of the hosts of the Raakshasha's.
लङ्कामायुश्च कल्पान्तं ययौ चीर्णव्रत: पुरीम् ।
अवकीर्यमाण: कुसुमैर्लोकपालार्पितै: पथि ॥३३॥
लङ्काम्-आयु:-च कल्प-अन्तम्
Lanka and age of till the Kalpa's end
ययौ चीर्ण-व्रत: पुरीम्
went completing the vow to the city
अवकीर्यमाण: कुसुमै:-
showered by flowers
लोकपाल-अर्पितै: पथि
by the guardians of the directions offered on the path
After having given Lankaa and the age of till the end of the Kalpa to Vibheeshana, He went to His city having completed the vow of fourteen years, on the path being showered with flowers offered by the guardians of the directions.
उपगीयमानचरित: शतधृत्यादिभिर्मुदा ।
गोमूत्रयावकं श्रुत्वा भ्रातरं वल्कलाम्बरम् ॥३४॥
उपगीयमान-चरित:

शतधृति-आदिभि:-मुदा
by Brahmaa and others with joy
गो-मूत्र-यावकम्
in cow urine (cooked) rice, hearing
भ्रातरम् वल्कल-अम्बरम्
the brother and tree barks' clothing's
All along His heroic deeds were being joyfully sung of by Brahmaa and others. He heard that His brother was eating rice cooked in cow urine and using tree barks as clothing's.
महाकारुणिकोऽतप्यज्जटिलं स्थण्डिलेशयम् ।
भरत: प्राप्तमाकर्ण्य पौरामात्यपुरोहितै: ॥३५॥
महा-कारुणिक:-अतप्यत्-
he, very pitiable, did penance
जटिलम् स्थण्डिले-शयम्
sever, on the floor sleeping
भरत: प्राप्तम्-आकर्ण्य
Bharata, (Raama) approaching, hearing
पौर-आमात्य-पुरोहितै:
with the citizens, ministers and priests
Bharata, was in a very pitiable state, doing severe penance, sleeping on the floor, hearing Raama approaching, with the citizens, ministers and priests,….
पादुके शिरसि न्यस्य रामं प्रत्युद्यतोऽग्रजम् ।
नन्दिग्रामात् स्वशिबिराद् गीतवादित्रनि:स्वनै: ॥३६॥
पादुके शिरसि न्यस्य
the wooden sandals on the head placed
रामम् प्रत्युद्यत:-अग्रजम्
to Raama greet, the elder brother
नन्दिग्रामात् स्व-शिविरात्
from Nandigraam, his own camp
गीत-वादित्र-नि:स्वनै:
with songs, musical instruments' sounds
Bharata, proceeded from his own camp Nandigraam to greet his elder brother, with His wooden sandals placed on his head, and with the sounds of songs and musical instruments.
ब्रह्मघोषेण च मुहु: पठद्भिर्ब्रह्मवादिभि: ।
स्वर्णकक्षपताकाभिर्हैमैश्चित्रध्वजै रथै: ॥३७॥
ब्रह्म-घोषेण च मुहु:
with the Vedas resounding, and again and again
पठद्भि:-ब्रह्म-वादिभि:
recited by the Veda exponents
स्वर्ण-कक्ष-पताकाभि:-
gold embroidered phastoons
हैमै:-चित्र-ध्वजै: रथै:
and golden and various flags and chariots
With the Vedas resounding and again and again recited by the Veda exponents and gold embroidered phastoons and chariots with golden and various other flags .
सदश्वै रुक्मसन्नाहैर्भटै: पुरटवर्मभि: ।
श्रेणीभिर्वारमुख्याभिर्भृत्यैश्चैव पदानुगै: ॥३८॥
सत्-अश्वै: रुक्म-सन्नाहै:-
with noble horses with gold trappings
भटै: पुरट-वर्मभि:
warriors with gold armours,
श्रेणीभि:-वारमुख्याभि:
merchants, courtesans,
भृत्यै:-च-एव पद-अनुगै:
servants and also on foot followers
With noble horses with gold trappings, warriors with gold armours, merchants, courtesans, servants and also on foot followers.
पारमेष्ठ्यान्युपादाय पण्यान्युच्चावचानि च ।
पादयोर्न्यपतत् प्रेम्णा प्रक्लिन्नहृदयेक्षण: ॥३९॥
पारमेष्ठ्यानि-उपादाय
merchandise carrying
पण्यानि-उच्च-अवचानि च
articles high and low
पादयो:-न्यपतत् प्रेम्णा
on the feet fell with love
प्रक्लिन्न-हृदय-ईक्षण:
melted heart and (moist) eyes
Carrying also merchandise and articles high and low. He fell down on His feet with his heart melted with love and with moist eyes.
पादुके न्यस्त पुरत: प्राञ्जलिर्बाष्पलोचन: ।
तमाश्लिष्य चिरं दोर्भ्यां स्नापयन् नेत्रजैर्जलै: ॥४०॥
पादुके न्यस्त पुरत:

प्राञ्जलि:-बाष्प-लोचन:
with joined palms, tear full eyes
तम्-आश्लिष्य चिरम् दोर्भ्यां
him embraced for long with both arms
स्नापयन् नेत्रजै:-जलै:
bathing with eyes flowing water
Placing the wooden sandals in front, he joined his palms, and embraced Him for long, bathing Him with the water flowing from his eyes.
रामो लक्ष्मणसीताभ्यां विप्रेभ्यो येऽर्हसत्तमा: ।
तेभ्य: स्वयं नमश्चक्रे प्रजाभिश्च नमस्कृत: ॥४१॥
राम: लक्ष्मण-सीताभ्याम्
Raama, with Lakshmana and Sitaa
विप्रेभ्य: ये-अर्हसत्तमा:
to Braahmanas and honourable elderly
तेभ्य: स्वयम् नम:-चक्रे
to them Himself Pranaam did
प्रजाभि:-च नमस्कृत:
by the public and was greeted
Raama, Himself, along with Lakshmana and Sitaa did pranaam to the Braahmanas and the honourable elders, and was Himself greeted by the public.
धुन्वन्त उत्तरासङ्गान् पतिं वीक्ष्य चिरागतम् ।
उत्तरा: कोसला माल्यै: किरन्तो ननृतुर्मुदा ॥४२॥
धुन्वन्त: उत्तरा-सङ्गान्
waving their upper garments
पतिम् वीक्ष्य चिर-आगतम्
The Master seeing, after long having come
उत्तरा: कोसला:
of Northern Kosala the people
माल्यै: किरन्त: ननृतु:-मुदा
garlands showering, danced in joy
The people of Northern Kosala, seeing their Master come back after long time, waved their upper garments, showered garlands and danced with joy.
पादुके भरतोऽगृह्णाच्चामरव्यजनोत्तमे ।
विभीषण: ससुग्रीव: शेवच्छत्रं मरुत्सुत: ॥४३॥
पादुके भरत:-अगृह्णात्-

Chaamaras and the fan excellent
विभीषण: स-सुग्रीव:
Vibheeshana with Sugreeva
शेवत्-छत्रम् मरुत्सुत:

Bharata carried the wooden sandals, Vibheeshana and Sugreeva carried the Chaamaras and the excellent fan and Hanumaan carried the white umbrella.
धनुर्निषङ्गाञ्छत्रुघ्न: सीता तीर्थकमण्डलुम् ।
अबिभ्रदङ्गद: खड्गं हैमं चर्मर्क्षराण् नृप ॥४४॥
धनु:-निषङ्गान्-शत्रुघ्न:
the bow and quivers Shatrughna
सीता तीर्थ-कमण्डलुम्
Sitaa the holy waters' pitcher
अबिभ्रत्-अङ्गद: खड्गम्
carried Angada the sword
हैमम् चर्म-ऋक्षराण् नृप
the golden shield Jaambavaana, O King!
O King! Shatrughna carried his bow and two quivers, Sitaa carried the pitcher of holy waters, Angada, the sword and Jaambavaana carried the golden shield.
पुष्पकस्थोऽन्वित: स्त्रीभि: स्तूयमानश्च वन्दिभि: ।
विरेजे भगवान् राजन् ग्रहैश्चन्द्र इवोदित: ॥४५॥
पुष्पक-स्थ:-अन्वित: स्त्रीभि:
in the Pushpaka seated, surrounded by the women
स्तूयमान:-च वन्दिभि:
being exalted by the bards
विरेजे भगवान् राजन्
shone The Lord, O King!
ग्रहै:-चन्द्र इव-उदित:
by the planets moon like rising
Seated in the Ariel car Pushpaka, surrounded by the women, His praises being sung by the bards, The Lord shone like the rising moon among the planets.
भ्रातृभिर्नन्दित: सोऽपि सोत्सवां प्राविशत् पुरीम् ।
प्रविश्य राजभवनं गुरुपत्नी: स्वमातरम् ॥४६॥
भ्रातृभि:-नन्दित: स:-अपि
by the brothers welcomed and greeted, He also
स-उत्सवाम् प्राविशत् पुरीम्
within the rejoicing entered the city
प्रविश्य राजभवनम्
entering the royal palace
गुरु-पत्नी: स्व-मातरम्
the preceptor's wife and own mother
He, welcomed by His brothers entered the rejoicing city, and entering the royal palace, honoured the preceptor's wife and His own mother.
गुरून् वयस्यावरजान् पूजित: प्रत्यपूजयत् ।
वैदेही लक्ष्मणश्चैव यथावत् समुपेयतु: ॥४७॥
गुरून् वयस्य-अवरजान्
the preceptors, equals, and youngers
पूजित: प्रत्यपूजयत्
greeted, and in return was greeted
वैदेही लक्ष्मण:-च-एव
Sitaa Lakshmana and also
यथावत् समुपेयतु:
as required, accordingly interacted
He greeted the preceptors, the equals, and youngers and was greeted in return. Sitaa and Lakshmana also accordingly interacted as per required.
पुत्रान् स्वमातरस्तास्तु प्राणांस्तन्व इवोत्थिता: ।
आरोप्याङ्केऽभिषिञ्चन्त्यो बाष्पौघैर्विजहु: शुच: ॥४८॥
पुत्रान् स्वमातर:-ता:-तु
the sons own mothers (seeing), they and
प्राणान्-तन्व: इव-उत्थिता:
life in the body like arising
आरोप्य-अङ्के-अभिषिञ्चन्त्य:
placing (them) in the lap, bathed
बाष्प-औघै:-विजहु: शुच:
with tears' streams, gave up grief
On seeing the sons, their mothers arose, like life in a dead body, and placed them on their laps and bathed them in a stream of tears, and gave up grief.
जटा निर्मुच्य विधिवत् कुलवृद्धै: समं गुरु: ।
अभिषिञ्चद् यथैवेन्द्रं चतु:सिन्धुजलादिभि: ॥४९॥
जटा निर्मुच्य विधिवत्
matted hair unravelled, according to the system,
कुल-वृद्धै: समम् गुरु:
with the family's elders the preceptor
अभिषिञ्चद् यथा-एव-इन्द्रम्
bathed just like Indra
चतु:-सिन्धु जल-आदिभि:
with four oceans waters and others
Unravelling their matted hair according to the system, in the presence of the preceptor and the elders of the family, they bathed them with the waters of the four oceans and other holy waters, as Indra's preceptor had bathed him.
एवं कृतशिर: स्नान: सुवासा: स्रग्व्यलङ्कृत: ।
स्वलङ्कृतै: सुवासोभिर्भ्रातृभिर्भार्यया बभौ ॥५०॥
एवम् कृत-शिर: स्नान:
in this manner, having with the head bathed
सुवासा: स्रग्वी-अलङ्कृत:
well perfumed, garlanded, and adorned
सु-अलङ्कृतै: सुवासोभि:-
with good ornaments, with good clothes,
भ्रातृभि:-भार्यया बभौ
with the brothers, and the wife (He) shone
In this manner, He was bathed from head to toe, and shone with His brothers and wife, all well adorned with perfumed garlands, good ornaments, and clothes.
अग्रहीदासनं भ्रात्रा प्रणिपत्य प्रसादित: ।
प्रजा: स्वधर्मनिरता वर्णाश्रमगुणान्विता: ।
जुगोप पितृवद् रामो मेनिरे पितरं च तम् ॥५१॥
अग्रहीत्-आसनम् भ्रात्रा
accepted the throne, by brother's
प्रणिपत्य प्रसादित:
prostration pleased
प्रजा: स्व-धर्म-निरता:
the people in own duties engaged
वर्ण-आश्रम-गुण-अन्विता:
Varna and Aashrama values adhering to
जुगोप पितृ-वत् राम:
ruled father like Raama
मेनिरे पितरम् च तम्
recognized as father and Him
Pleased with Bharata's prostrations, Raama accepted the throne. The people were engaged in their respective duties and adhered to the values of the Varna and Aashrama, He ruled them like a father, and they also recognized Him as a father.
त्रेतायां वर्तमानायां काल: कृतसमोऽभवत् ।
रामे राजनि धर्मज्ञे सर्वभूतसुखावहे ॥५२॥
त्रेतायाम् वर्तमानायाम्
Tretaa yuga being present,
काल: कृत-सम:-अभवत्
time Krita yuga like became
रामे राजनि धर्मज्ञे
as Raama being the king, knower of righteousness
सर्व-भूत-सुख-आवहे
and for all beings happiness bringing
Though Treta yuga prevailed, the time seemed like that of Krita (Sat) yuga. When Raama, the knower of righteousness ruled, it brought happiness for all beings.
वनानि नद्यो गिरयो वर्षाणि द्वीपसिन्धव: ।
सर्वे कामदुधा आसन् प्रजानां भरतर्षभ ॥५३॥
वनानि नद्य: गिरय:
the forests, rivers, mountains,
वर्षाणि द्वीप-सिन्धव:
the Varshas, Dweepas, oceans,
सर्वे कामदुधा आसन्
all desired yielded, were
प्रजानाम् भरतर्षभ
for the people, O Scion of the Bharatas!
O Scion of the Bharatas! the forests, rivers, mountains, the Varshas, Dweepas, oceans, were desires yielding for the people.
नाधिव्याधिजराग्लानिदु:खशोकभयक्लमा: ।
मृत्युश्चानिच्छतां नासीद् रामे राजन्यधोक्षजे ॥५४॥
न-आधि-व्याधि-जरा-ग्लानि-
not mental or physical disease, old age, remorse,
दु:ख-शोक-भय-क्लमा:
sorrow, grief, fear, tiredness,
मृत्यु:-च-अनिच्छताम्
death and to the non-willing
न-आसीत् रामे राजनि-
was not there in Ramaa's rule
अधोक्षजे
Lord Vishnu
In the rule of Raama, Lord Vishnu, there were no mental or physical disease, old age, remorse, sorrow, grief, fear, tiredness, and death to the non-willing.
एकपत्नीव्रतधरो राजर्षिचरित: शुचि: ।
स्वधर्मं गृहमेधीयं शिक्षयन् स्वयमाचरत् ॥५५॥
एक-पत्नी-व्रत-धर:
one wife vow taking
राजर्षि-चरित: शुचि:
royal sage character pure
स्व-धर्मम् गृह-मेधीयम्
own duties, for householders
शिक्षयन् स्वयम्-आचरत्
exemplifying, himself followed
Observing the vow of one wife, though living a royal life conducted a pious life as of a sage, performed His householders duties setting an example for the others.
प्रेम्णानुवृत्त्या शीलेन प्रश्रयावनता सती ।
धिया ह्रिया च भावज्ञा भर्तु: सीताहरन्मन: ॥५६॥
प्रेम्णा-अनुवृत्त्या शीलेन
with love, obeying, softness,
प्रश्रय-अवनता सती
humbleness, amiable, the pious one
धिया ह्रिया च भावज्ञा
by intelligence and bashfulness, knowing mind
भर्तु: सीता-अहरत्-मन:
husband's, Sitaa stole the hearts
The pious one, Sitaa, with love, obedience, softness, humbleness, amiable nature, intelligence and bashfulness, knowing her husband's mind, stole the hearts.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां नवमे स्कन्धे रामचरिते दशम: अध्याय: ॥१०॥
Thus ends the tenth discourse, forming part of the Narrative of Shree Raama, in Book Nine of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
