सूत उवाच -
Soota said -
सम्प्रस्थिते द्वारकायां जिष्णौ बन्धुदिदृक्षया ।
ज्ञातुं च पुण्यश्लोकस्य कृष्णस्य च विचेष्टितम् ॥१॥
सम्प्रस्थिते द्वारकायाम्
embarked for Dwaarakaa,
जिष्णौ बन्धु-दिदृक्षया
(when) Arjuna, friends to see
ज्ञातुम् च पुण्यश्लोकस्य
to know and of sacred renowned
कृष्णस्य च विचेष्टितम्
Krishna's and doings
Arjuna set forth for Dwaaraka, to know about the activities of Krishna of sacred renown and also to meet and see friends and relatives.
व्यतीता कतिचिन्मासास्तदा नायात्ततोऽर्जुन: ।
ददर्श घोररूपाणि निमित्तानि कुरूद्वह: ॥२॥
व्यतीता कतिचित्-मासा:-
passed many months
तदा न-आयात्-तत:-अर्जुन:
then (too) did not return from there Arjuna
ददर्श घोर-रूपाणि
saw fearful forms
निमित्तानि कुरूद्वह:
of dreams, the Kurus' leader
Many months had passed, yet Arjuna had not returned from there. The leader of the Kurus, Yudhishtthira saw many fearful forms of dreams.
कालस्य च गतिं रौद्रां विपर्यस्तर्तुधर्मिण: ।
पापीयसीं नृणां वार्तां क्रोधलोभानृतात्मनाम् ॥३॥
कालस्य च गतिम् रौद्राम्
of time and pace frightening
विपर्यस्त ऋतु-धर्मिण:
changing of seasons' characteristics
पापीयसीम् नृणाम् वार्ताम्
sinful peoples ways
क्रोध-लोभ-अनृत-आत्मनाम्
anger, greed, falsehood natured
The course of time had taken a dreadful turn, changing the characteristics of the seasons. The people had taken to sinfull ways and were full of anger, greed and falsehood.
जिह्मप्रायं व्यवहृतं शाठ्यमिश्रं च सौहृदम् ।
पितृमातृसुहृद्भ्रातृदम्पतीनां च कल्कनम् ॥४॥
जिह्म-प्रायम् व्यवहृतम्
deceitful is interaction
शाठ्य-मिश्रम् च सौहृदम्
crookedness mixed is and friendship
पितृ-मातृ-सुहृत्-भ्रातृ-
father, mother, friend, brothers
दम्पतीनाम् च कल्कनम्
and couples is discord
The interaction among the people is decietful. Friendship is mixed with crookedness. There is discord and quarrell between fathers, mothers, friends, brothers and couples.
निमित्तान्यत्यरिष्टानि काले त्वनुगते नृणाम् ।
लोभाद्यधर्मप्रकृतिं दृष्ट्वोवाचानुजं नृप: ॥५॥
निमित्तानि-अति-अरिष्टानि
(bad) omens very inauspicious
काले तु-अनुगते नृणाम्
time indeed having come of people
लोभ-आदि-अधर्म प्रकृतिम्
greed and other evils in nature
दृष्ट्वा-उवाच-अनुजम् नृप:
seeing, said to younger brother, the king
With the approaching of Kali Yuga, very inauspicious bad omens were seen. The nature of the people was inflicted by greed and other evils. Seeing all this, the king Yudhishtthira said to his younger brother Bheema…
युधिष्ठिर उवाच -
Yudhishtthira said -
सम्प्रेषितो द्वारकायां जिष्णुर्बन्धुदिदृक्षया ।
ज्ञातुं च पुण्यश्लोकस्य कृष्णस्य च विचेष्टितम् ॥६॥
सम्प्रेषित: द्वारकायाम्
was sent to Dwaarakaa
जिष्णु:-बन्धु-दिदृक्षया
Arjuna, friends to meet
ज्ञातुम् च पुण्यश्लोकस्य
and to know the sacred renowned
कृष्णस्य च विचेष्टितम्
Krishna's and activities
Arjuna was sent to Dwaaraka to meet friends and relatives, and to know about the activities of the sacred renowned one, Krishna.
गता: सप्ताधुना मासा भीमसेन तवानुज: ।
नायाति कस्य वा हेतोर्नाहं वेदेदमञ्जसा ॥७॥
गता: सप्त-अधुना मासा:
have passed, seven now months
भीमसेन तव-अनुज:
Bheemsena, your younger brother
न-आयाति कस्य वा हेतो:-
does not return, by what reason or
न-अहम् वेद-इदम्-अञ्जसा
not I understand this, easily
O Bheemsena! Now seven months have passed, but your younger brother has not returned. I fail to understand the reason for this.
अपि देवर्षिणाऽऽदिष्ट: स कालोऽयमुपस्थित: ।
यदाऽऽत्मनोऽङ्गमाक्रीडं भगवानुत्सिसृक्षति ॥८॥
अपि देव-ऋषिणा-आदिष्ट:
is it, by the holy sage predicted
स: काल:-अयम्-उपस्थित:
that time, this has arrived
यदा-आत्मन:-अङ्गम्-
when His own body
आक्रीडम् भगवान्-
for the sport (assumed), The Lord
उत्सिसृक्षति
will cast off
Is it so that the time predicted by the holy sage has arrieved, when, the Lord, His own body which He assumed, for this worldly sport, will cast off?
यस्मान्न: सम्पदो राज्यं दारा: प्राणा: कुलं प्रजा: ।
आसन् सपत्नविजयो लोकाश्च यदनुग्रहात् ॥९॥
यस्मात्-न: सम्पद: राज्यम्
from whom our wealth, kingdom,
दारा: प्राणा: कुलम् प्रजा:
wives, lives, families and subjects
आसन् सपत्न-विजय:
(we) got victory over enemies
लोका:-च यत्-अनुग्रहात्
and (higher) worlds by whose grace
By Whose grace and from Whom we achieved our wealth, kingdom, wives, lives, families and subjects and victory over enemies and also our right to higher worlds.
पश्योत्पातान्नरव्याघ्र दिव्यान् भौमान् सदैहिकान् ।
दारुणाञ्शंसतोऽदूराद्भयं नो बुद्धिमोहनम् ॥१०॥
पश्य-उत्पातान्-नर-व्याघ्र
look, calamities, O Tiger among men!
दिव्यान् भौमान् स-दैहिकान्
heavenly, earthly, and with physical
दारुणान्-शंसत:-अदूरात्-
sever talking of them, at hand (is)
भयम् न: बुद्धि-मोहनम्
fear our mind blowing
O Tiger among men! Look at the sever calamities in the heavens, on the earth and the physical ones. Even talking about them, it feels that the mind confusing calamities are near at hand.
ऊर्वक्षिबाहवो मह्यं स्फुरन्त्यङ्ग पुन: पुन: ।
वेपथुश्चापि हृदये आराद्दास्यन्ति विप्रियम् ॥११॥
ऊरु-अक्षि-बाहव: मह्यम्
thigh, eye and arm, mine
स्फुरन्ति-अङ्ग पुन: पुन:
quiver limbs again and again
वेपथु:-च-अपि हृदये
trembles and even heart
आरात्-दास्यन्ति विप्रियम्
soon, will give unpleasant (news)
My thigh, eye, arm and limbs are quivering again and again. My heart also trembles every now and then. This will soon bring unpleasant news.
शिवैषोद्यन्तमादित्यमभि रौत्यनलानना ।
मामङ्ग सारमेयोऽयमभिरेभत्यभीरुवत् ॥१२॥
शिव-एषा-उद्यन्तम-आदित्यम्-
she jackal this, rising Sun
अभि रौति-अनल-आनना
towards howls, fire faced
माम्-अङ्ग
me, O Dear!
सारमेय:-अयम्-
dog this
अभिरेभति-अभीरुवत्
barks fearlessly
This fire faced she jackal howls at the rising Sun, and O Dear Bheema! This dog fearlessly barks at me.
शस्ता: कुर्वन्ति मां सव्यं दक्षिणं पशवोऽपरे ।
वाहांश्व पुरुषव्याघ्र लक्षये रुदतो मम ॥१३॥
शस्ता: कुर्वन्ति माम् सव्यम्
auspicious animals (like cows), to my left
दक्षिणम् पशव:-अपरे
to the right animals others
वाहान्-च पुरुष-व्याघ्र
horses and, O among men tiger!
लक्षये रुदत: मम
(I) see weeping towards me
The auspicious animals take to my left, whereas the other animals take to my right. I see the horse also weeping towards me.
मृत्युदूत: कपोतोऽयमुलूक: कम्पयन् मन: ।
प्रत्युलूकश्च कुह्वानैरनिद्रौ शून्यमिच्छत: ॥१४॥
मृत्यु-दूत: कपोत:-अयम्-
death's messenger dove this

owl, shuddering the heart
प्रत्युलूक:-च कुह्वानै:-
enemy of owl (crow) and by shrill cries,
अनिद्रौ शून्यम्-इच्छत:
in sleep-less night, vacant (the world) wanting
This dove is death's massanger. The shrill cries of the owl and crow at the dead of night, as though wanting the world to be vacant, make me sleep-less, and my heart shudder.
धूम्रा दिश: परिधय: कम्पते भू: सहाद्रिभि: ।
निर्घातश्च महांस्तात साकं च स्तनयित्नुभि: ॥१५॥
धूम्रा: दिश: परिधय: कम्पते
smoky quarters, orbs (of Sun and Moon), quiver
भू: सह-अद्रिभि:
earth with the mountains
निर्घात:च महान्-तात
loud sound and great, Dear brother!
साकम् च स्तनयित्नुभि:
with and lightening clouds
The quarters are smoky, so are the orbs of the Sun and the Moon. The earth along with the mountains quivers and quakes. Dear brother! Besides thundering and lightening in the clouds there is great loud sound.
वायुर्वाति खरस्पर्शो रजसा विसृजंस्तम: ।
असृग् वर्षन्ति जलदा बीभत्समिव सर्वत: ॥१६॥
वायु:-वाति खर-स्पर्श:
wind blows piercing to feel
रजसा विसृजन्-तम:
(and) by dust spreading darkness
असृग् वर्षन्ति जलदा
blood rain the clouds
बीभत्सम्-इव सर्वत:
ghastly like everywhere
The wind blows harshly and piercing and by the dust spreads darkness. The clouds rain blood making everything ghastly.
सूर्यं हतप्रभं पश्य ग्रहमर्दं मिथो दिवि ।
ससंकुलैर्भूतगणैर्ज्वलिते इव रोदसी ॥१७॥
सूर्यम् हतप्रभम् पश्य
the Sun lustre-less look
ग्रह-मर्दम् मिथ: दिवि
planets bumping into each other in the heavens
ससंकुलै:-भूत-गणै:-
by the gathering of ghosts groups
ज्वलिते इव रोदसी
enflamed like are earth and sky.
Look! The Sun is lustre-less! The planets are bumping into each other in the heavens. The heavens and earth are enflamed by the congregation of groups of ghosts.
नद्यो नदाश्च क्षुभिता: सरांसि च मनांसि च ।
न ज्वलत्यग्निराज्येन कालोऽयं किं विधास्यति ॥१८॥
नद्य: नदा:-च क्षुभिता:
rivers, big rivers and agitated
सरांसि च मनांसि च
and lakes and minds
न ज्वलति-अग्नि:-आज्येन
does not light fire by butter (ghee)
काल:-अयम् किम् विधास्यति
time this what will conspire
The streams and rivers as well as lakes and minds are all agitated. The fire is not lighted even by ghee. What is this terrible time going to conspire?
न पिबन्ति स्तनं वत्सा न दुह्यन्ति च मातर: ।
रुदन्त्यश्रुमुखा गावो न हृष्यन्त्यृषभा व्रजे ॥१९॥
न पिबन्ति स्तनम् वत्सा:
do not drink udders calves
न दुह्यन्ति च मातर:
do not mulch, and mothers (cows)
रुदन्ति-अश्रु-मुखा: गाव:
weep, tear faced cows
न हृष्यन्ति-ऋषभा: व्रजे
do not rejoice bulls in the sheds
The calves do not suck the udders, the mothers do not milch. The cows weep with tears on their faces and the bulls are not happy in the sheds.
दैवतानि रुदन्तीव स्विद्यन्ति ह्युच्चलन्ति च ।
इमे जनपदा ग्रामा: पुरोद्यानाकराश्रमा: ।
भ्रष्टश्रियो निरानन्दा: किमघं दर्शयन्ति न: ॥२०॥
दैवतानि रुदन्ति-इव
the images weep as if
स्विद्यन्ति हि-उच्चलन्ति च
perspire, also move and
इमे जनपदा: ग्रामा:
these districts, villages,
पुर-उद्यान-आकर-आश्रमा:
cities, gardens mines and hermitages
भ्रष्ट-श्रिय: निरानन्दा:
have lost splendour (and are) cheerless
किम्-अघम् दर्शयन्ति न:
what suffering will come to us
The images of gods seem to weep, perspire and move in their places.The districts, villages, cities, gardens, mines and hermitages have lost their splendour and they are cheerless. What suffering is to come to us?
मन्य एतैर्महोत्पातैर्नूनं भगवत: पदै: ।
अनन्यपुरुषश्रीभिर्हीना भूर्हतसौभगा ॥२१॥
मन्ये एतै:-महा-उत्पातै:-
I believe, by these serious mishappenings
नूनं भगवत: पदै:
surely Lord's feet
अनन्य-पुरुष-
any other person's
श्रीभि:-हीना
splendour deprived
भू:-हत-सौभगा
earth is devoid of charm
By looking at these serious mishappenings, I belive that, the earth is deprived of the grace of The Lord's feet, which is unattainable by any other person's feet. That is why the earth is devoid of all splendour and charm.
इति चिन्तयस्तस्य दृष्टारिष्टेन चेतसा ।
राज्ञ: प्रत्यागमद् ब्रह्मन् यदुपुर्या: कपिध्वज: ॥२२॥
इति चिन्तय:-तस्य
thus worrying his
दृष्ट-अरिष्टेन चेतसा
foreseeing bad omens, minded
राज्ञ: प्रत्यागमद् ब्रह्मन्
in King's front retuned, O Brahman Shaunaka!
यदुपुर्या: कपिध्वज:
from Dwaarakaa Arjuna
As the king Yudhishtthira was worrying in this manner and foreseeing the misries and bad omens, with an anxious mind, there in front of him, Arjun returned from Dwaaraka.
तं पादयोर्निपतितमयथापूर्वमातुरम् ।
अधोवदनमब्बिन्दून् सृजन्तं नयनाब्जयो: ॥२३॥
तम् पादयो:-निपतितम्-
him at his feet fallen
अयथा-पूर्वम्-आतुरम्
unlike before, distressed
अधोवदनम्-
cast (down) face
अप्-बिन्दून् सृजन्तम्
tear drops flowing
नय-अब्जयो:
(from) eye lotuses
King Yudhishtthira saw his younger brother Arjuna fallen at his feet. Unlike before, he was distressed with a cast down face and tear drops were flowing from his lotus like eyes.
विलोक्योद्विग्नहृदय: विच्छायमनुजं नृप: ।
पृच्छतिस्म सुहृन्मध्ये संस्मरन् नारदेरितम् ॥२४॥
विलोक्य-उद्विग्न-हृदय:
seeing trouble minded
विच्छायम्-अनुजम् नृप:
and lustreless younger brother, the king
पृच्छति-स्म सुहृत्-मध्ये
asked, in the midst of the kinsmen
संस्मरन् नारद-ईरितम्
remembering Naarada's words
The king saw his younger brother all lustreless, and troubled at heart, he asked him, among all the kinsmen, even as he remembered what Naarada had said,…….
युधिष्ठिर उवाच -
Yudhishtthira said -
कच्चिदानर्तपुर्यां न: स्वजना: सुखमासते ।
मधुभोजदशार्हार्हसात्वतान्धकवृष्णय: ॥२५॥
कच्चित्-आनर्त-पुर्याम्
is it in Dwaarakaa
न: स्वजना: सुखम्-आसते
our relatives, happily living
मधु-भोज-दशार्ह-अर्ह-
Madhu, Bhoja, Dashaarha, Arha,
सात्वत-अन्धक-वृष्णय:
Saatvata, Andhaka and the Vrishnees
In Dwaarakaa, are our relatives the Madhus, Bhojas, Dashaarhas, Arhas, Andhaka and the Vrishnees living happily?
शूरो मातामह: कच्चित्स्वस्त्यास्ते वाथ मारिष: ।
मातुल: सानुज: कच्चित्कुशल्यानकदुन्दुभि: ॥२६॥
शूर: मातामह: कच्चित्-
Shoorasena
स्वस्ति-आस्ते वा-अथ मारिष:
is it well living
मातुल: स-अनुज: कच्चित्-
maternal uncle with younger brother, is he
कुशली-आनकदुन्दुभि:
doing well, Vasudeva
Is our meternal grandfather well? And our respected maternal uncle Vasudeva, with his younger brother, is he keeping good health?
सप्त स्वसारस्तत्पत्न्यो मातुलान्य: सहात्मजा: ।
आसते सस्नुषा: क्षेमं देवकीप्रमुखा: स्वयम् ॥२७॥
सप्त स्वसार:-तत्-पत्न्य:
seven sisters, his (Vasudeva's) wives
मातुलान्य: सह-आत्मजा:
maternal aunts with their sons
आसते सस्नुषा: क्षेमम्
are with their daughter-in-laws, all right,
देवकी-प्रमुखा: स्वयम्
Devaki mainly, themselves
The seven sisters who are the wives of Vasudeva and are our maternal aunts, are they all all right with their sons and daughter-in-laws, and themselves, mainly Devaki.
कच्चिद्राजाऽऽहुको जीवत्यसत्पुत्रोऽस्य चानुज: ।
हृदीक: ससुतोऽक्रूरो जयन्तगदसारणा: ॥२८॥
कच्चित्-राजा-आहुक: जीवति-
is king Aahuka (Ugrasena), living
असत्-पुत्र:-अस्य च-अनुज:
notorious son his and younger brother
हृदीक: ससुत:-अक्रूर:
Hrideeka, with son, Akroora
जयन्त-गद-सारणा:
Jayanta, Gada, Saarana
Is the king Ugrasena and his notorious son (Kansa) and his younger brother (Devak) alive? And Hrideeka and his son (Kritaverma), Akroora, Jayanta, Gada, and Saarana?
आसते कुशलं कच्चिद्ये च शत्रुजिदादय: ।
कच्चिदास्ते सुखं रामो भगवान् सात्वतां प्रभु: ॥२९॥
आसते कुशलम् कच्चित्-
are living happily, is it
ये च शत्रुजित्-आदय:
those and Shatrujit and others
कच्चित्-आस्ते सुखम् राम:
is it are well in comfort Raama
भगवान् सात्वताम् प्रभु:
The Lord, of the Saatvatas head
And those worriors Shatrujit and others, are they living happily? Is Lord Raama the head of the Satvatas well and in comfort?
प्रद्युम्न: सर्ववृष्णीनां सुखमास्ते महारथ: ।
गम्भीररयोऽनिरुद्धो वर्धते भगवानुत ॥३०॥
प्रद्युम्न: सर्व-वृष्णीनाम्
Pradyumna, of all the Vrishnees
सुखम्-आस्ते महारथ:
happily is, the warrior
गम्भीर-रयो:-अनिरुद्ध:
of great valour Aniruddha
वर्धते भगवान्-उत
prospers divine also
Of all the Vrishnees the great warrior Pradyumna, is he happy? And the divine Aniruddha of great valour also prospers?
सुषेणश्चारुदेष्णश्च साम्बो जाम्बवती सुत: ।
अन्ये च कार्ष्णिप्रवरा: सपुत्रा ऋषभादय: ॥३१॥
सुषेण:-चारुदेष्ण:-च
Sushena, Chaarudeshna and
साम्ब: जाम्बवती सुत:
Saamba Jaambavatee's son
अन्ये च कार्ष्णि:-प्रवरा:
and others, Yaadava's distinguished
सपुत्रा: ऋषभ:-आदय:
with their sons Rishabha etc.,
Sushena and Charudeshna, Jaambawatee's son Saamba, and the others the distinguished ones of the Yaadavas, Rishabha and others with their sons.
तथैवानुचरा: शौरे: श्रुतदेवोद्धवादय: ।
सुनन्दनन्दशीर्षण्या ये चान्ये सात्वतर्षभा: ॥३२॥
तथा-एव-अनुचरा: शौरे:
and also attendants of Lord Krishna
श्रुतदेव-उद्धव-आदय:
Shrutadeva, Uddhava and others
सुनन्द-नन्द-शीर्षण्या:
Sunanda, Nanda the heads
ये च-अन्ये सात्वत-ऋषभा:
those and others, of the Yaadavaas exalted
And also the attendents of Lord Krishna, Shrutadeva, Uddhava, and others, Sunanda and Nanda, the heads and those exalted others of the Yaadavas.
अपि स्वस्त्यासते सर्वे रामकृष्ण भुजाश्रया: ।
अपि स्मरन्ति कुशलमस्माकं बद्धसौहृदा: ॥३३॥
अपि स्वस्ति-आसते सर्वे
is it well, are they all
राम-कृष्ण भुज-आश्रया:
By Raama's and Krishna's arms protected
अपि स्मरन्ति कुशलम्-
do (they) remember welfare
अस्माकम् बद्ध-सौहृदा:
ours, tied by affection
Are all of them well, those protected by the arms of Bala Raama and Krishna? Do they remember to enquire of our welfare, tied to us by affection?
भगवानपि गोविन्दो ब्रह्मण्यो भक्तवत्सल: ।
कच्चित्पुरे सुधर्मायां सुखमास्ते सुहृद् वृत: ॥३४॥
भगवान्-अपि गोविन्द:
Lord also Krishna
ब्रह्मण्य: भक्त-वत्सल:
(devoted) to Braahmanas, and lover of devotees
कच्चित्-पुरे सुधर्मायाम्
is it in the city, (Dwaarakaa), in the council of Sudharmas
सुखम्-आस्ते सुहृद् वृत:
happily lives, by kith and kin surrounded
Devoted to the Braahmanas and lover of his devotees Lord Krishna also lives happily in the council of Sudharmaas and surrounded by his kith and kin?
मङ्गलाय च लोकानां क्षेमाय च भवाय च ।
आस्ते यदुकुलाम्भोधावाद्योऽनन्तसख: पुमान् ॥३५॥
मङ्गलाय च लोकानाम्
for the well being of the people
क्षेमाय च भवाय च
for (their) protection and prosperity
आस्ते यदु-कुल-अम्भोधौ-
is present, in Yadu's race ocean
आद्य:-अनन्त-सख: पुमान्
constant Balaraama as friend The Primal Person
The Primal Person Krishna, with His constant companion, Shesha -Balaraama, is present in the Yadu race ocean, for the well being, protection and prosperity of the worlds.
यद्बाहुदण्डगुप्तायां स्वपुर्यां यदवोऽर्चिता: ।
क्रीडन्ति परमानन्दं महापौरुषिका इव ॥३६॥
यत्-बाहु-दण्ड-गुप्तायाम्
So that, arms like staffs protected
स्व-पुर्याम् यदव:-अर्चिता:
in their own city, by Yadus respected
क्रीडन्ति परमानन्दम्
revel in ultimate joy
महा-पौरुषिका इव
attendants of Vishnu like
So that, the Yadus, in their own city, respected by all and protected by Krishna's staff like arms, revel in ultimate joy like the attendents of Vishnu.
यत्पादशुश्रूषणमुख्यकर्मणा सत्यादयो द्व्यष्टसहस्रयोषित: ।
निर्जित्य संख्ये त्रिदशांस्तदाशिषो हरन्ति वज्रायुधवल्लभोचिता: ॥३७॥
यत्-पाद-शुश्रूषण-

हरन्ति वज्रायुध-
take away, the wielder of thunderbolt (Indra's)
वल्लभ-उचिता:
beloveds' worth
The wives, Satyabhaamaa and sixteen thousand others, take the service of Whose (Krishna's) feet, as their prime duty, and by virtue of which they made Krishna conquer over the gods and provide them with the luxurious objects worthy to be used by the beloveds of Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt.
यद्बाहुदण्डाभ्युदयानुजीविनो यदुप्रवीरा ह्यकुतोभया मुहु: ।
अधिक्रमन्त्यङ्घ्रिभिराहृतां बलात् सभां सुधर्मां सुरसत्तमोचिताम् ॥३८॥
यत्-बाहु-दण्ड-अभ्युदय-
Whose arm staff's might
अनुजीविन: यदु-प्रवीरा:
supported the Yaadava warriors
हि-अकुतोभया: मुहु:
indeed fearlessly again and again
अधिक्रमन्ति-अङ्घ्रिभि:-
trample (tread) by feet,
आहृताम् बलात् सभाम्
snatched forcefully, the council-hall,
सुधर्माम् सुर-सत्तम-उचिताम्
Sudharmaa, of leading gods' worthy
Supported by the might of Whose arm staffs, the Yadu warriors, every now and then, tread the council hall named Sudharmaa, which was forcefully snatched from the gods, and is worthy of only the highest gods being seeted there.
कच्चित्तेऽनामयं तात भ्रष्टतेजा विभासि मे ।
अलब्धमानोऽवज्ञात: किं वा तात चिरोषित: ॥३९॥
कच्चित्-ते-अनामयम् तात
is it, you healthy, O Brother!
भ्रष्टतेजा विभासि मे
list less, (you) look to me
अलब्ध-मान:-अवज्ञात:
(were you) not respected, not recognized
किम् वा तात चिर-उषित:
or is it, brother, by long stay
O Brother! Are you yourself healthy? You look listless to me. Is it that you were not attended upon well or is it you were not respected, because of your long stay there?
कच्चिन्नाभिहतोऽभावै: शब्दादिभिरमङ्गलै: ।
न दत्तमुक्तमर्थिभ्य आशया यत्प्रतिश्रुतम् ॥४०॥
कच्चित्-न-अभिहत:-अभावै:
is it not hurt by insulting
शब्द-आदिभि:-अमङ्गलै:
words and others inauspicious
न दत्तम्-उक्तम्-अर्थिभ्य:
not given said (thing) to seekers
आशया यत्-प्रतिश्रुतम्
with hope (to give) which (you) promised
Is it that you were hurt by insulting or inauspicious words? Or is it that you promised to give something to seekers, and that said (thing) was not given to seekers.
कच्चित्त्वं ब्राह्मणं बालं गां वृद्धं रोगिणं स्त्रियम् ।
शरणोपसृतं सत्त्वं नात्याक्षी: शरणप्रद: ॥४१॥
कच्चित्-त्वम् ब्राह्मणम्
is it (that) you Braahmana,
बालम् गाम् वृद्धम्
child, cow, aged (person),
रोगिणम् स्त्रियम्
ailing (person), woman
शरण-उपसृतम् सत्त्वम्
shelter seeking being,
न-अत्याक्षी: शरण-प्रद:
did not abandon, (you) the shelter giving one
Is it that, you abondoned a Braahmana, a child, a cow, an aged person, an ailing person or a woman seeking shelter, from you the shelter giver?
कच्चित्त्वं नागमोऽगम्यां गम्यां वासत्कृतां स्त्रियम् ।
पराजितो वाथ भवान्नोत्तमैर्नासमै: पथि ॥४२॥
कच्चित्-त्वम् न-अगम:-
is it you, did not sleep
अगम्याम् गम्याम् वा-
with unworthy, a worthy or
असत्कृताम् स्त्रियम्
insult woman
पराजित: वा-अथ भवान्-
did loose or then, you
न-उत्तमै: वा-असमै: पथि
not to inferior or to equals on the way
I hope you did not sleep with unworthy women or that you did not insult worthy women. Or is it that on the way, you lost to people who are inferior to you or to people who are equal to you?
अपि स्वित्पर्यभुङ्क्थास्त्वं सम्भोज्यान् वृद्धबालकान् ।
जुगुप्सितं कर्म किंचित्कृतवान्न यदक्षमम् ॥४३॥
अपि स्वित्-पर्यभुङ्क्था:-त्वम्
is it that, eaten have you
सम्भोज्यान् वृद्ध-बालकान्
edibles, (meant) for elderly, children
जुगुप्सितम् कर्म किंचित्-
dishonouring work any
कृतवान्-न यत्-अक्षमम्
did (you) not, which is not suited (to you)
Is it that you have eaten food meant for the elderly people or for the children? Or is it that you have done some undignified work which is unbecoming to you?
कच्चित् प्रेष्ठतमेनाथ हृदयेनात्मबन्धुना ।
शून्योऽस्मि रहितो नित्यं मन्यसे तेऽन्यथा न रुक् ॥४४॥
कच्चित् प्रेष्ठतमेन-अथ
is it by most dear and
हृदयेन-आत्म-बन्धुना
by heart intimate friend
शून्य:-अस्मि रहित: नित्यम्
desolate am I without, always
मन्यसे ते-अन्यथा न रुक्
(you) are thinking, your other (than this) is no agony
Or is it that your feeling that you are being seperated from you most dear to heart and intimate friend, is the soul cause of your agony?
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां प्रथमस्कन्धे
युधिष्ठिरवितर्को नाम चतुर्दश: यध्याय: ॥१४॥
Thus ends the fourteenth discourse entitled 'Yudhishthira's Doubt', in Book One of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
