सूत उवाच -
Soota said -
एवं कृष्णसख: कृष्णो भ्रात्रा राज्ञाऽऽविकल्पित: ।

नानाशङ्कास्पदं रूपं कृष्णविश्लेषकर्शित: ॥१॥


एवम् कृष्ण-सख: कृष्ण:
thus to Krishna's friend, Arjuna
भ्रात्रा राज्ञा-आविकल्पित:
by brother, the king asked
नाना-शङ्का-आस्पदम् रूपम्
many doubts raising appearance
कृष्ण-विश्लेष-कर्शित:
(caused by) Krishna's separation weakened

Thus Krishna's friend, Arjuna was asked many questions by his brother the king Yudhishtthira, because of his many doubts arousing,weakened appearance, caused by the seperation from Krishna.


शोकेन शुष्यद्वदनहृत्सरोजो हतप्रभ: ।

विभुं तमेवानुध्यायन्नाशक्नोत्प्रतिभाषितुम् ॥२॥


शोकेन शुष्यत्-वदन-
by grief wilting face
हृत्-सरोज: हत-प्रभ:
and heart lotus lost brightness
विभुम् तम्-एव-अनुध्यायन्-
The Almighty, Him only thinking of
न-अशक्नोत्-प्रतिभाषितुम्
was not able to answer

Arjun's face and heart lotus were wilting with grief, all his brightness was lost. Continuously thinking of That Almighty Lord only, he was unable to answer.


कृच्छ्रेण संस्तभ्य शुच: पाणिनाऽऽमृज्य नेत्रयो: ।

परोक्षेण समुन्नद्धप्रणयौत्कण्ठ्यकातर: ॥३॥


कृच्छ्रेण संस्तभ्य शुच:
with difficulty holding his pain
पाणिना-आमृज्य नेत्रयो:
by hand wiping the eyes
परोक्षेण समुन्नद्ध-प्रणय:-
by absence swelling love
औत्कण्ठ्य-कातर:
with anxiety tormented

Arjun held his pain with difficulty and wiped his eyes with his hand. His love for Krishna swelled by swelling love, His absence he was tormented with anxiety.


सख्यं मैत्रीं सौहृदं च सारथ्यादिषु संस्मरन् ।

नृपमग्रजमित्याह बाष्पगद्गदया गिरा ॥४॥


सख्यम् मैत्रीम् सौहृदम् च
friendship, companionship and sweet heartedness
सारथ्य-आदिषु संस्मरन्
as charioteer etc. remembering
नृपम्-अग्रजम्-इति-आह
to the king, the elder brother, this said
बाष्प-गद्गदया गिरा
by tears overwhelmed speech

Arjun remembered the friendship, companionship and sweet heartedness of Krishna as a charioteer etc., and said this to his elder brother the king, with tears overwhelmed speech.


अर्जुन उवाच -
Arjuna said -
वञ्चितोऽहं महाराज हरिणा बन्धुरूपिणा ।

येन मेऽहपहृतं तेजो देवविस्मापनं महत् ॥५॥


वञ्चित:-अहम् महाराज
cheated (am) I, O Great King!
हरिणा बन्धु-रूपिणा
by Hari as a friend
येन मे-अहपहृतम् तेज:
by Whom my robbed is valour
देव-विस्मापनम् महत्
of gods envy great

O Great King! I have been cheated by Hari as a friend, and He has robbed me of my valour, which was a great matter of envy for even the gods.


यस्य क्षणवियोगेन लोको ह्यप्रियदर्शन: ।

उक्थेन रहितो ह्येष मृतक: प्रोच्यते यथा ॥६॥


यस्य क्षण-वियोगेन
by Whose, a moments separation
लोक: हि-अप्रिय-दर्शन:
the world, indeed unpleasant sight
उक्थेन रहित: हि-एष:
by life bereft, as this
मृतक: प्रोच्यते यथा
dead is called like

By a mere moment's separation from Whom, this world presents itself as an unpleasant sight. Just as this body bereft of life is called dead.


यत्संश्रयाद् द्रुपदगेहमुपागतानाम् राज्ञां स्वयंवरमुखे स्मरदुर्मदानाम् ।

तेजो हृतं खलु मयाभिहतश्च मत्स्य: सज्जीकृतेन धनुषाधिगता च कृष्णा ॥७॥


यत्-संश्रयाद् द्रुपद-गेहम्-
by Whose support, in Drupada's house
उपागतानाम् राज्ञाम्
assembled kings
स्वयंवर-मुखे
during the 'Swayambara'
स्मर-दुर्मदानाम्
by love intoxicated
तेज: हृतम् खलु मया-
valour robbed indeed by me
अभिहत:-च मत्स्य:
pierced and the fish
सज्जीकृतेन धनुषा-
by the decorated bow
अधिगता च कृष्णा
and won Draupadee

By Whose, support alone, during the 'Swayambara" of Draupadee, I robbed the kings of their valour, who had assembled in the house of Drupada, intoxicated with love. I pierced the fish with the decorated bow and won the hand of Draupadee.


यत्संन्निधावहमु खाण्डवमग्नयेऽदामिन्द्रं च सामरगणं तरसा विजित्य ।

लब्धा सभा मयकृताद्भुतशिल्पमाया दिग्भ्योऽहरन्नृपतयो बलिमध्वरे ते ॥८॥


यत्-संन्निधौ-अहम्-उ
in Whose company I alone
खाण्डवम्-अग्नये-अदाम्-
Khaandava forest to fire gave
इन्द्रम् च स-अमरगणम्
and Indra along with the hosts of gods
तरसा विजित्य
quickly conquered
लब्धा सभा मयकृता-
acquired the council hall, made by Maya
अद्भुत-शिल्प-माया
wonderful craftsmanship and surprising devices
दिग्भ्य:-अहरन्-नृपतय:
from all quarters collected, from the kings
बलिम्-अध्वरे ते
presents in the sacrifice (conducted by) you

In Whose company, I alone gave the Khaandava forest to the fire, and quickly conquered Indra and the hosts of gods. I also acquiered the council hall made by Maya Daanava, with its wonderful craftmanship and surprising devices. I also collected contributory presents from the kings from all the quarters, when you conducted the sacrifice of Raajasooya Yagya.


यत्तेजसा नृपशिरोऽङ्घ्रिमहन्मखार्थे आर्योऽनुजस्तव गजायुतसत्त्ववीर्य: ।

तेनाहृता: प्रमथनाथमखाय भूपा यन्मोचितास्तदनयन् बलिमध्वरे ते ॥९॥


यत्-तेजसा नृप-शिर:-अङ्घ्रिम्-
by Whose might, on kings' heads (placing) feet (him)
अहत्-मख-अर्थे
(Jaraasandha) killed for the sacrifice's sake
आर्य:-अनुज:-तव
revered younger brother your (Bheema)
गज-आयुत-सत्त्व-वीर्य:
elephants ten thousand strength and vigour
तेन-आहृता:
by him made captive
प्रमथ-नाथ-मखाय
for ghosts' chief (Shiva's) sacrifice
भूपा: यत्-मोचिता:
the kings who were released
तत्-अनयन् बलिम्-
they brought presents
अध्वरे ते
for the sacrifice your

It was by His, Krishna's might, that your revered younger brother, Bheema, having the strength and vigour of ten thousand elephants, killed Jaraasandha who had the audacity to place his feet on the heads of the kings. The kings who were brought and made captive by Jaraasandha, for the purpose of Shiva's sacrifice, were released by Bheema, who later brought presents for your Raajasooya sacrifice.


पत्न्यास्तवाधिमखकॢप्तमहाभिषेक श्लाघिष्ठचारुकबरं कितवै: सभायाम् ।

स्पृष्टं विकीर्य पदयो: पतिताश्रुमुख्या यस्तत्स्त्रियोऽकृत हतेशविमुक्तकेशा: ॥१०॥


पत्न्या:-तव-अधिमख-कॢप्त-
of wife's your during the sacrifice, done
महा-अभिषेक-श्लाघिष्ठ-
royal sprinkling of (holy) water sacred
चारु-कबरम् कितवै: सभायाम्
and praiseworthy braid, by evil minded in assembly
स्पृष्टम् विकीर्य पदयो: पतिता-
touched and opened in feet fell
अश्रु-मुख्या य:-तत्-स्त्रिय:-
with tears on face, Who (Krishna) their women
अकृत हत-ईश-विमुक्त-केशा:
made master less (husband less), loosened haired

When, in the midst of the assembly, your wife's hair braid, rendered sacred and praisworthy by the sprinkling of the royal holy water during the Raajasooya Yagya, was touched and loosened by the evil minded, and she fell at His feet with tears on her face, it was He, Krishna, Who made their women husbandless, and the women with loosened haired.


यो नो जुगोप वनमेत्य दुरन्तकृच्छ्रात् दुर्वाससोऽरिरचितादयुताग्रभुग्य: ।

शाकान्नशिष्टमुपयुज्य यतस्त्रिलोकीं तृप्ताममंस्त सलिले विनिमग्नसङ्घ: ॥११॥


य: न: जुगोप वनम्-एत्य
Who us saved in the forest by coming
दुरन्त-कृच्छ्रात् दुर्वासस:-अरि-
from great trouble, by Durvaasaa, the enemies'
रचितात्-अयुत-अग्रभुग्-य:
conspired, ten thousand together eating, Who
शाक-अन्न-शिष्टम्-उपयुज्य यत:-
vegetable and rice left over ate, by which
त्रिलोकीम् तृप्तान्-अमंस्त
the three worlds satiated felt
सलिले विनिमग्न-सङ्घ:
in water immersed, with the student group

It was He, Krishna who saved us from great trouble, when by the enemy, Duryodhana's conspiracy Durvaasaa had come with ten thousand students to dine, He came to the forest and ate the left over vegetable and rice in the pot, because of which the three worlds were satisfied, and the students were also satisfied when they were still emerged in water, for taking a bath. So they went away.


यत्तेजसाथ भगवान् युधि शूलपाणि: विस्मापित: सगिरिजोऽस्त्रमदान्निजं मे ।

अन्येऽपि चाहममुनैव कलेवरेण प्राप्तो महेन्द्रभवने महदासनार्धम् ॥१२॥


यत्-तेजसा-अथ भगवान् युधि
by Whose might again, Lord, in a battle
शूलपाणि: विस्मापित: सगिरिज:-
Shiva was amazed, with Paarvati
अस्त्रम्-अदात्-निजम् मे
weapon gave his own to me
अन्ये-अपि च-अहम्-
others also (did so) and I
अमुना-एव कलेवरेण
with this alone body
प्राप्त: महेन्द्र-भवने
reached Indra's palace (and)
महत्-आसन-अर्धम्
the exalted throne (Indra's) half part

Again, by Whose, Krishna's might, in a battle with Shiva, I amazed him and his wife Paarvatee, and he and the other gaurdians gave me their own weapons. And I, in this body itself, reached Indra's palace and I shared half of his exalted throne.


तत्रैव मे विहरतो भुजदण्डयुग्मं गाण्डीवलक्षणमरातिवधाय देवा: ।

सेन्द्रा: श्रिता यदनुभावितमाजमीढ तेनाहमद्य मुषित: पुरुषेण भूम्ना ॥१३॥


तत्र-एव मे विहरत:
there itself, as I was holidaying
भुज-दण्ड-युग्मम्
(my) arms long two
गाण्डीव-लक्षणम्-
Gaandeeva carrying
अराति-वधाय देवा:
enemies' for destruction the gods
स-इन्द्रा: श्रिता
with Indra depended
यत्-अनुभावितम्-
who (on me) by Whose grace
आजमीढ तेन-अहम्-अद्य
O King of Ajaameedha! by Him I am today
मुषित: पुरुषेण भूम्ना
cheated, The Person Primal

O King of Ajaameedha! When I was holidaying there only, the gods and Indra depended on my two long arms' might, with which I carried the Gaandeeva for the destruction of their enemies, it was by Whose grace? The same Primal Person has cheated me today!


यद्बान्धव: कुरुबलाब्धिमनन्तपारम् एको रथेन ततरेऽहमतार्यसत्त्वम् ।

प्रत्याहृतं बहुधनं च मया परेषां तेजास्पदं मणिमयं च हृतं शिरोभ्य: ॥१४॥


यत्-बान्धव: कुरु-बल-अब्धिम्-
Whose friend (being), Kuru armies' ocean
अनन्त-पारम् एक: रथेन
endless, by one chariot
ततरे-अहम्-अतार्य-सत्त्वम्
swam across I, huge creatures (within)
प्रत्याहृतम् बहु-धनम् च मया
brought back great wealth and by me
परेषाम् तेज-आस्पदम्
of the enemies, resplendence spreading
मणिमयम् च हृतम् शिरोभ्य:
gem stones studded, and snatched crowns

By virtue of being Whose, (Krishna's) friend, I could swim across the unending ocean of Kuru's army, full of huge creatures, (great warriors), and brought back great cattle wealth from the enemies, by only one chariot, and also snatched away the gems, from their radiance emmiting gem studded diadems.


यो भीष्मकर्णगुरुशल्यचमूष्वदभ्र-राजन्यवर्यरथमण्डलमण्डितासु ।

अग्रेचरो मम विभो रथयूथपानाम् आयुर्मनांसि च दृशा सह ओज आर्च्छत् ॥१५॥


य: भीष्म-कर्ण-गुरु-शल्य-
Who, Bheeshma, Karna, Dronaachaarya, Shalya
चमूषु-अदभ्र-राजन्य-वर्य-
armies countless kings great
रथ-मण्डल-मण्डितासु
chariots groups surrounded
अग्रेचर: मम विभो
leading me, O Lord!
रथ-यूथपानाम् आयु:-मनांसि च
the charioted warriors' age, intellect and
दृशा सह ओज: आर्च्छत्
by a glance, valour took away

The Lord! He, Krishna, Who while leading me, surrounded by the hosts of the chariots of great warriors, Bheeshma, Karna, Dronaachaarya and Shalya's countless armies, by His very glance robbed them of their age, intellect, heart and strength.


यद्दोष्षु मा प्रणिहितं गुरुभीष्मकर्ण-नप्तृत्रिगर्तशलसैन्धवबाह्लीकाद्यै: ।

अस्त्राण्यमोघमहिमानि निरूपितानि नो पस्पृशुर्नृहरिदासमिवासुराणि ॥१६॥


यत्-दोष्षु मा प्रणिहितम्
(on) Whose arms I, sheltered
गुरु-भीष्म-कर्ण-
Dronaachaarya, Bheeshma, Karna,
नप्तृ-त्रिगर्त-शल-
Bhoorishravaa, Susharmaa, Shalya
सैन्धव-बाह्लीक-आद्यै:
Jayadratha, Baalheeks and others
अस्त्राणि-अमोघ-महिमानि
weapons unfailing (very) powerful
निरूपितानि नो पस्पृशु:-
applied, did not touch (me)
नृहरि-दासम्-इव-असुराणि
Narahari's devotee (Prahlaada) like demons'

Sheltered as I was on Whose (Krishna's) arms, the unfailing and most powerful weapons applied by Dronaachaarya, Bheeshma, Karna, Bhoorishravaa, Susharmaa, Shalya, Jayadratha, Baalheeka and others towards me, did not as much as touch me, as the demons' weapons did not touch Prahlaad the devotee of Narahari.


सौत्ये वृत: कुमतिनाऽऽत्मद ईश्वरो मे यत्पादपद्ममभवाय भजन्ति भव्या: ।

मां श्रान्तवाहमरयो रथिनो भुविष्ठं न प्राहरन् यदनुभावनिरस्तचित्त: ॥१७॥


सौत्ये वृत: कुमतिना-
in charioteer-hood by stupid minded,
आत्मद: ईश्वर: मे
giving Himself, The Lord, to me
यत्-पाद-पद्मम्-
Whose feet lotuses
अभवाय भजन्ति भव्या:
for exemption adore, noble (souls)
माम् श्रान्त-वाहम्-
to me, exhausted horses whose
अरय: रथिन:
the enemies chariot warriors
भुविष्ठम् न प्राहरन्
on this earth did not strike
यत्-अनुभाव-निरस्त-चित्त:
by Whose grace, failed intellect

The stupid minded I, made The Lord, who gave Himself to me, a charioteer. He, Whose lotus feet are adored by noble souls for exemption from birth and death. By Whose, grace the great chariot warrior enemies, because of their failed intellects, did not even strike at me, as I stood on this earth with my horses exhausted.


नर्माण्युदाररुचिरस्मितशोभितानि हे पार्थ हेऽर्जुन सखे कुरुनन्दनेति ।

संजल्पितानि नरदेव हृदि स्पृशानि स्मर्तुर्लुठन्ति हृदयं मम माधवस्य ॥१८॥


नर्माणि-उदार-रुचिर-स्मित-
jovial, clear, sweet, smiling
शोभितानि हे पार्थ हे-अर्जुन
pleasant (calling) O Paarth, O Arjuna
सखे कुरुनन्दन-इति
O Friend, Kurunandana, and such
संजल्पितानि नर-देव
endearing names, O King!
हृदि स्पृशानि स्मर्तु:-लुठन्ति
heart touching, by remembering stir
हृदयं मम माधवस्य
my heart, of Maadhava,

Madhavas jovial clear sweet smiling and pleasant calling me by O Paartha, O Arjuna, O Friend, O Kurunandana, heart touching, and endearing names, O king ! stirs my heart deeply when remembering them.


शय्यासनाटनविकत्थनभोजनादिष्वैक्याद्वयस्य ऋतवानिति विप्रलब्ध: ।

सख्यु: सखेव पितृवत्तनयस्य सर्वं सेहे महान्महितया कुमतेरघं मे ॥१९॥


शय्या-आसन-अटन-विकत्थन-
in sleeping, sitting, roaming, conversing,
भोजन-आदिषु-ऐक्यात्-वयस्य
eating etc., by being of same age
ऋतवान्-इति विप्रलब्ध:
'Truth' thus, taunted
सख्यु: सखेव पितृवत्-
in friendship friend like, father like
तनयस्य सर्वम् सेहे महान्-
son's everything endured The noble One,
महितया कुमते:-अघम् मे
with nobleness, foolish (me) misdeeds mine

As we were of the same age, at times of sleep, sitting around, roaming about, coversing eating etc., "you are Truth itself', I thus taunted. But The noble One with all nobleness, endured all my faults, as a friend in friendship, or father of his son.


सोऽहं नृपेन्द्र रहित: पुरुषोत्तमेन सख्या प्रियेण सुहृदा हृदयेन शून्य: ।

अध्वन्युरुक्रमपरिग्रहमङ्ग रक्षन् गोपैरसद्भिरबलेव विनिर्जितोऽस्मि ॥२०॥


स:-अहम् नृपेन्द्र रहित:
that me O King! without
पुरुषोत्तमेन सख्या प्रियेण
The Primal Person, companion, beloved,
सुहृदा हृदयेन शून्य:
and friend, by heart am emptied
अध्वनि-उरुक्रम-परिग्रहम्-अङ्ग
in the way, The Lords wives, O Dear!
रक्षन् गोपै:-असद्भि:-
guarding, by the cowherd rogues,
अबला-इव विनिर्जित:-अस्मि
a woman like, won over am I

O King! Without That Primal Person, Krishna, the companion, the beloved, the friend, my heart is a vaccume. So much so, O Dear! That while gaurding The Lord's wives on the way, like a woman, I was won over by the rogue cowherds.


तद्वै धनुस्त इषव: स रथो हयास्ते सोऽहं रथी नृपतयो यत आनमन्ति ।

सर्वं क्षणेन तदभूदसदीशरिक्तं भस्मन् हुतं कुहकराद्धमिवोप्तमूष्याम् ॥२१॥


तत्-वै धनु:-ते इषव:
that only (is) the bow, they the arrows
स: रथ: हया:-ते
that chariot, horses those,
स:-अहम् रथी
that me charioteer,
नृपतय: यत: आनमन्ति
the kings where bow down,
सर्वम् क्षणेन तत्-अभूत्-
all in a moment that became
असत्-ईश-रिक्तम्
meaningless, God devoid
भस्मन् हुतम्
in ashes sacrifices
कुहक-राद्धम्-
false service
इव-उप्तम्-ऊष्याम्
like (sowing of) seed in barren (land)

Here, my bow Gaandeeva is the same, the arrows are the same, my chariot is the same, and the horses also are the same, me, the chariot warrior is the same, for whom the monarchs bowed their heads. Yet devoid of God, every thing looks meaningless, like oblations poured in ashes, like false service, and like sowing seeds in barren land.


राजंस्त्वयाभिपृष्टानां सुहृदां न: सुहृत्पुरे ।

विप्रशापविमूढानां निघ्नतां मुष्टिभिर्मिथ: ॥२२॥


राजन्-त्वया-अभिपृष्टानाम्
O King! By you, asked about
सुहृदाम् न: सुहृत्-पुरे
friends ours in Dwaarakaa
विप्र-शाप विमूढानाम्
by a Braahmana's curse numbed
निघ्नताम् मुष्टिभि:-मिथ:
hit (and killed) by fists each other

O King! You asked about our friends and relatives in Dwaaraka. By a Braahmana's curse, they were dumbed and killed each other by hitting fists blows.


वारुणीं मदिरां पीत्वा मदोन्मथितचेतसाम् ।

अजानतामिवान्योन्यं चतु:पञ्चावशेषिता: ॥२३॥


वारुणीम् मदिराम् पीत्वा
by Vaarunee wine drinking
मद-उन्मथित-चेतसाम्
intoxicated and unbalanced minded
अजानताम्-इव-अन्योन्यम्
not knowing like, each other
चतु:पञ्च-अवशेषिता:
four or five remained

They had drunk Vaarunee wine and so with intoxicated and unbalanced mind, as if not knowing each other, they struck. Only four or five of them remain.


प्रायेणैतद्भगवत ईश्वरस्य विचेष्टितम् ।

मिथो निघ्नन्ति भूतानि भावयन्ति च यन्मिथ: ॥२४॥


प्रायेण-एतत्-भगवत:
mostly this Almighty
ईश्वरस्य विचेष्टितम्
Lord's sport (is)
मिथ: निघ्नन्ति भूतानि
(that) one another kill, living beings
भावयन्ति च यत्-मिथ:
and foster that one another

This is generally the sport of Almighty Lord that sometimes the living beings kill one another, and sometimes they foster one another.


जलौकसां जले यद्वन्महान्तोऽदन्त्यणीयस: ।

दुर्बलान् बलिनो राजन् महान्तो बलिनो मिथ: ॥२५॥


जल-औकसाम् जले यत्-वत्-
the aquatic among in water, just like,
महान्त:-अदन्ति-अणीयस:
larger eat the smaller
दुर्बलान् बलिन: राजन्
the weaker by stronger, O King!
महान्त: बलिन: मिथ:
greater and stronger each other

O King! Just like among the aquatic creatures in the deep waters, the larger ones devour the smaller ones, so, the weaker ones are eaten by the stronger ones, and the greater and stronger eat each other.


एवं बलिष्ठैर्यदुभिर्महद्भिरितरान् विभु: ।

यदून् यदुभिरन्योन्यं भूभारान् संजहार ह ॥२६॥


एवम् बलिष्ठै:-यदुभि:-
so, by powerful Yadus
महद्भि:-इतरान् विभु:
great other (kings), The Lord
यदून् यदुभि:-अन्योन्यम्
Yadus by Yadus, each other,
भूभारान् संजहार ह
of earth the burden, got killed indeed

And so, The Lord, made the other great kings to be killed by powerful Yadus and the Yadus made to be killed by Yadus, who were a burden to the earth.


देशकालार्थयुक्तानि हृत्तापोपशमानि च ।

हरन्ति स्मरतश्चित्तं गोविन्दाभिहितानि मे ॥२७॥


देश-काल-अर्थ-युक्तानि
place time and object, appropriate (to)
हृत्-ताप-उपशमानि च
heart's distress soothed and
हरन्ति स्मरत:-चित्तम्
taken away by remembering mind
गोविन्द-अभिहितानि मे
Govinda's (Krishna's) sayings my

Appropriate to place time and object, the soother of heart's distress, Govinda's words to me, ravish my mind, whenever I remember them.


सूत उवाच -
Soota said -
एवं चिन्तयतो जिष्णो: कृष्णपादसरोरुहम् ।

सौहार्देनातिगाढेन शान्ताऽऽसीद् विमला मति: ॥२८॥


एवम् चिन्तयत: जिष्णो:
thus, (as was) contemplating Arjuna
कृष्ण-पाद-सरोरुहम्
Krishna's feet lotuses
सौहार्देन-अति-गाढेन
with devotion very deep
शान्त-आसीत् विमला मति:
peaceful became, passionless (his) mind

Thus, as Arjuna was contemplating on Krishna's lotus feet, with very deep devotion, his mind became peaceful and passionless.


वासुदेवाङ्घ्र्यनुध्यानपरिबृंहितरंहसा ।

भक्त्या निर्मथिताशेषकषायधिषणोऽर्जुन: ॥२९॥


वासुदेव-अङ्घ्रि-अनुध्यान-
Krishna's feet contemplating
परिबृंहित-रंहसा
by the forceful flow of devotion
भक्त्या निर्मथित-अशेष-
washed away all
कषाय धिषण:-अर्जुन:
impurities of mind of Arjuna

By the forcefull flow of devotion which was generated by Arjuna's contemplating on the feet of Krishna, all impurities of his mind were washed away.


गीतं भगवता ज्ञानं यत्तत्संग्राममूर्धनि ।

कालकर्मतमोरुद्धं पुनरध्यगमद् विभु: ॥३०॥


गीतम् भगवता ज्ञानम्
sung by The Lord, the wisdom
यत्-तत्-संग्राम-मूर्धनि
that which, in the battle front
काल-कर्म-तम:-रुद्धम्
(by) time, and activities' darkness obscured
पुन:-अध्यगमद् विभु:
again recollected the mighty one (Arjuna)

The wisdom which was sung and preached by The Lord in the battle front and was forgotten by Arjuna, due to having been obscured by lapse of time and many worldly activities, was again recollected by the mighty one, Arjuna.


विशोको ब्रह्मसम्पत्त्या संछिन्नद्वैतसंशय: ।

लीनप्रकृतिनैर्गुण्यादलिङ्गत्वादसम्भव: ॥३१॥


विशोक: ब्रह्म-सम्पत्त्या
sorrow less, by the Brahman wealth (of knowledge)
संछिन्न-द्वैत-संशय:
broken, duality doubt
लीन-प्रकृति-नैर्गुण्यात्-
immersed Prakriti and non Gunas
अलिङ्गत्वात्-असम्भव:
devoid of astral body, freed from rebirth

Arjuna gained the wealth of the knowledge of Brahman and he became sorrowless. His doubt of duality caused by Prakriti was broken, and he emmersed in a state on non-Gunas. Thus bereft of the astral body he was freed from the cycle of birth and death.


निशम्यभगवन्मार्गं संस्थां यदुकुलस्य च ।

स्व:पथाय मतिं चक्रे निभृतात्मा युधिष्ठिर: ॥३२॥


निशम्य भगवत्-मार्गम्
hearing Lord's departure
संस्थाम् यदुकुलस्य च
and extinction of Yaadavas
स्व:-पथाय मतिम् चक्रे
for the heaven's path, mind made up
निभृत-आत्मा युधिष्ठिर:
peaceful minded Yudhishtthira

The peaceful minded Yudhishtthira, hearing of Krishna's departure and the extermination of the Yaadavas, made up his mind to take the path to heaven.


पृथाप्यनुश्रुत्य धनंजयोदितं नाशं यदूनां भगवद्गतिं च ताम् ।

एकान्तभक्त्या भगवत्यधोक्षजे निवेशितात्मोपरराम् संसृते: ॥३३॥


पृथा-अपि-अनुश्रुत्य
Prithaa (Kunti) also hearing
धनंजय-उदितम्
by Arjuna said
नाशम् यदूनाम्
destruction of Yaadavas
भगवत्-गतिम् च ताम्
and Lord's departure that
एकान्त-भक्त्या
(with) one pointed devotion
भगवति-अधोक्षजे
in Krishna the lotus eyed
निवेशित-आत्मा-
placing her mind
उपरराम् संसृते:
gave up this world

When, Prithaa, Kunti heard from Arjuna about the distruction of the Yaadavas and the departure of Lord Krisha, she placed her mind in the lotus eyed Krishna with one pointed devotion and renounced this world consisting of the cycle of birth and death.


ययाहरद् भुवो भारं तां तनुं विजहावज: ।

कण्टकं कण्टकेनेव द्वयं चापीशितु: समम् ॥३४॥


यया-अहरत् भुव:- भारम्
by which took away the earth burden
ताम् तनुम् विजहौ-अज:
that body gave up The Unborn (Lord)
कण्टकम् कण्टकेन-एव
thorn by thorn (extracted) like
द्वयम् च-अपि-इशितु: समम्
and both also, for God are the same

The Unborn Lord Krishna cast off the body by which he had relieved the earth of its burden. Just as the thorn by which the thorn is extracted, both are thrown away, so also both are same for the Lord.


यथा मत्स्यादिरूपाणि धत्ते जह्याद् यथा नट: ।

भूभार: क्षपितो येन जहौ तच्च कलेवरम् ॥३५॥


यथा मत्स्य-आदि-रूपाणि
just as fish etc., forms
धत्ते जह्यात् यथा नट:
takes over and casts off, as an actor
भू-भार: क्षपित: येन
earth's burden thrown away, by which,
जहौ तत्-च कलेवरम्
cast off and that body

Just as an actor takes on the forms of fish etc., and then casts the forms off, The Lord cast off the body by which He threw off the earth's burden.


यदा मुकुन्दो भगवानिमां महीं जहौ स्वतन्वा श्रवणीयसत्कथ: ।

तदाहरेवाप्रतिबुद्धचेतसामधर्महेतु: कलिरन्ववर्तत ॥३६॥


यदा मुकुन्द: भगवान्-
when Krishna, The Lord
इमाम् महीम् जहौ
this earth left
स्व-तन्वा श्रवणीय-सत्-कथ:
by His body, worth hearing charming stories
तदा-अह:-एव-अप्रतिबुद्ध-चेतसाम्-
that day only, (for) unawakened minded (people)
अधर्म-हेतु: कलि:-अन्ववर्तत
unrighteousness causing, Kali (yuga) entered

When The Lord Krishna, whose charming stories are worth hearing, cast off His body and departed from this earth, that day only Kaliyuga entered making the unawakened minded people act unrighteously.


युधिष्ठिरस्तत्परिसर्पणं बुध: पुरे च राष्ट्रे च गृहे तथाऽऽत्मनि ।

विभाव्य लोभानृतजिह्महिंसनाद्यधर्मचक्रं गमनाय पर्यधात् ॥३७॥


युधिष्ठिर:-तत्-परिसर्पणम्
Yudhishtthira, its advancement
बुध: पुरे च राष्ट्रे च गृहे
the wise, in the city and country, and in the houses
तथा-आत्मनि विभाव्य
and in himself knowing
लोभ-अनृत-जिह्म-हिंसन-
greed, falsehood deceit crime etc.,
अधर्म-चक्रम् गमनाय पर्यधात्
vices galore, to go away, decided

The wise Yudhishtthira, saw the increase in greed, falsehood, deciet, crime and other vices galore, in the cities, country and every house and even himself, knew the Kali age was advancing and so he decided to depart.


स्वराट् पौत्रं विनयिनमात्मन: सुसमं गुणै: ।

तोयनीव्या: पतिं भूमेरभ्यषिञ्चद् गजाह्वये ॥३८॥


स्वराट् पौत्रम् विनयिनम्-
the emperor, the grandson, the humble
आत्मन: सुसमम् गुणै:
like himself and equal in virtues
तोय-नीव्या: पतिम् भूमे:-
by waters girdled (surrounded), the master of earth
अभ्यषिञ्चद् गजाह्वये
crowned in Hastinaapura

The emperor, Yudhishtthira, crowned his grandson, the humble Pareekshit, who was eaqual to him in virtues, as the soveriegn master of the earth surrounded by water.


मथुरायां तथा वज्रं शूरसेनपतिं तत: ।

प्राजापत्यां निरूप्येष्टिमग्नीनपिबदीश्वर: ॥३९॥


मथुरायाम् तथा वज्रम्
in Mathura and Vajra,
शूरसेन-पतिम् तत:
Shoorasenas lordship then
प्राजापत्याम् निरूप्य-
Prajaapatya conducting,
इष्टिम्-अग्नीन्-अपिबत्-ईश्वर:
the sacrifice, the fires quenched the lord

The lord Yudhishtthira, then placed Vraja as the lord of Mathuraa, and then conducted the Prajaapatya sacrifice and thereafter quenched the domestic fires.


विसृज्य तत्र तत्सर्वं दुकूलवलयादिकम् ।

निर्ममो निरहंकार: संछिन्नाशेषबन्धन: ॥४०॥


विसृज्य तत्र तत्-सर्वम्
leaving there, that all
दुकूल-वलय-आदिकम्
fine clothes, bangles etc.,
निर्मम: निरहंकार:
unpossesive and egoless
संछिन्न-अशेष-बन्धन:
broke off all ties

He left his fine cloathes and bangles etc., there in the palace only, and with an unpossesive egoless mind broke away all the ties.


वाचं जुहाव मनसि तत्प्राण इतरे च तम् ।

मृत्यावपानं सोत्सर्गं तं पञ्चत्वे ह्यजोहवीत् ॥४१॥


वाचम् जुहाव मनसि
speech merged into mind
तत्-प्राण इतरे च तम्
that into life force (Parana), and others, senses into that,
मृत्यौ-अपानम् स्-उत्सर्गम्
in death the lower breath, with the action (of lower breath)
तम् पञ्चत्वे हि-अजोहवीत्
that, into the five elements and merged

He, Yudhishtthira, merged his speech into the mind, and mind into the life force, and the senses into the life force, in death the lower breath, and the action of the lower breath into the body made of the five elements.


त्रित्वे हुत्वाथ पञ्चत्वं तच्चैकत्वेऽजुहोन्मुनि: ।

सर्वमात्मन्यजुहवीद् ब्रह्मण्यात्मानमव्यये ॥४२॥


त्रित्वे हुत्वा-अथ पञ्चत्वम्
in the three Gunas merged then the five elements
तत्-च-एकत्वे-अजुहोत्-मुनि:
and that, in the one Prakriti merged, the sage
सर्वम्-आत्मनि-अजुहवीत्
all into the soul merged
ब्रह्मणि-आत्मानम्-अव्यये
and in Brahman the soul imperishable

The royal sage merged the five elements in the three Gunas, which he merged in the one fundamental Prakriti. This Prakriri was merged into the individual soul, which was then merged into the imperishable Brahman.


चीरवासा निराहारो बद्धवाङ् मुक्तमूर्धज: ।

दर्शयन्नात्मनो रूपं जडोन्मत्तपिशाचवत् ॥४३॥


चीर-वासा: निराहार:
rags wearing, not eating (food)
बद्ध-वाक् मुक्तम्-मूर्धज:
holding back speech, astray haired
दर्शयन्-आत्मन: रूपम्
projecting his own form
जड-उन्मत्त-पिशाच-वत्
as dumb, mad fiend like

He, Yudhishtthira went about in rags as cloathings, not eating food, refraining to talk, and with his hair all going astray. He projected his own form as that of a dumb person, a madman or even as a fiend.


अनपेक्षमाणो निरगादशृण्वन् बधिरो यथा ।

उदीचीं प्रविवेशाशां गतपूर्वां महात्मभि: ।

हृदि ब्रह्म परं ध्यायन्नावर्तेत यतो गत: ॥४४॥


अनपेक्षमाण: निरगात्-
unexpecting set out,
अशृण्वन् बधिर: यथा
not hearing, deaf like
उदीचीम् प्रविवेश-आशाम्
to North entered direction
गत-पूर्वाम् महात्मभि:
went in the past by the exalted souls
हृदि ब्रह्म परम् ध्यायन्-
in the heart Brahman Supreme contemplating
न-आवर्तेत यत: गत:
does not return where gone

He set out, without any expectations, not hearing like a deaf person, and entered the Northern direction, where the exalted souls had gone in the past, and tredding which path one does not return.


सर्वे तमनु निर्जग्मुर्भ्रातर: कृतनिश्चया: ।

कलिनाधर्ममित्रेण दृष्ट्वा स्पृष्टा: प्रजा भुवि ॥४५॥


सर्वे तम्-अनु निर्जग्मु:-
all of them followed and set forth
भ्रातर: कृत-निश्चया:
brothers making decisions
कलिना-अधर्म-मित्रेण
by Kali unrighteousness's friend
दृष्ट्वा स्पृष्टा: प्रजा: भुवि
finding effected the people on earth

All the brothers also took a decision and set forth following him, as they found that Kaliyuga, the friend of unrighteousness was effecting the people on the earth.


ते साधुकृतसर्वार्था ज्ञात्वाऽऽत्यन्तिकमात्मन:।

मनसा धारयामासुर्वैकुण्ठचरणाम्बुजम् ॥४६॥


ते साधु-कृत-सर्व-अर्था:
they well experienced, in all the goals (of life)
ज्ञात्वा-आत्यन्तिकम्-आत्मन:
knowing final benefit conducting, for themselves
मनसा धारयामासु
mentally stuck to
र्वैकुण्ठ-चरण-अम्बुजम्
Vaikuntha (Vishnu's) feet lotuses

They, the Paandavaas having very well experienced the four goals of life, and knowing that the lotus feet of Vaikuntha, Vishnu is their final benefit conducting source, they mentally stuck to those feet.


तद्ध्यानोद्रिक्तया भक्त्या विशुद्धधिषणा: परे ।

तस्मिन्नारायणपदे एकान्तमतयो गतिम् ॥४७॥


तद्-ध्यान-उद्रिक्तया भक्त्या
by that concentration, enhanced devotion
विशुद्ध-धिषणा: परे
purified intellect in the Real
तस्मिन्-नारायण-पदे
That Naaraayana feet
एकान्त-मतय: गतिम्
one pointed minded abode (attained)

By their concentration on Vishnu's feet, their devotion was enhanced and with a pure intellect and one pointed mind, they attained the Real abode at the feet of Naaraayana.


अवापुर्दुरवापां ते असद्भिर्विषयात्मभि: ।

विधूतकल्मषास्थाने विरजेनात्मनैव हि ॥४८॥


अवापु:-दुरवापाम् ते
attained, unattainable they
असद्भि:-विषय-आत्मभि:
by the unrighteous, in sensually minded
विधूत-कल्मष-आस्थाने
devoid of sins, it is proper
विरजेन-आत्मना-एव हि
by the gunas bereft, by themselves only

They, the Paandavas, devoid of sins, and bereft of gunas, attained by themselves that state which is unattainable by the unrighteous and sensually minded people. This is proper only.


विदुरोऽपि परित्यज्य प्रभासे देहमात्मवान् ।

कृष्णावेशेन तच्चित्त: पितृभि: स्वक्षयं यायौ ॥४९॥


विदुर:-अपि परित्यज्य
Vidura also cast off
प्रभासे देहम्-आत्मवान्
in Prabhaasa body, the knower of self
कृष्ण-आवेशेन तत्-चित्त:
by Krishna besieged his mind,

Vidura also, the knower of the self, cast off his body in Prabhaasa and his mind besieged by the thoughts of Krishna, returned to his own abode, the realm of Yama, with the manes.


द्रौपदी च तदाऽऽज्ञाय पतीनामनपेक्षताम् ।

वासुदेवे भगवति ह्येकान्तमतिराप तम् ॥५०॥


द्रौपदी च तत्-आज्ञाय
Draupadee and then knowing
पतीनाम्-अनपेक्षताम्
her husbands' indifference
वासुदेवे भगवति हि-
in Vaasudeva Lord (Krishna), indeed
एकान्त-मति:-आप तम्
concentrating mind, attained Him

Then, Draupadee also knowing the indifference of her husbands, indeed, concentrated her mind on the Lord Vaasudeva, and attained Him.


य: श्रद्धयैतद् भगवत्प्रियाणां पाण्डो: सुतानामिति सम्प्रयाणम् ।

शृणोत्यलं स्वस्त्ययनं पवित्रं लब्ध्वा हरौ भक्तिमुपैति सिद्धिम् ॥५१॥


य: श्रद्धया-एतद्
whoever with reverence this
भगवत्-प्रियाणाम्
of Lord's beloveds'
पाण्डो: सुतानाम्-
Paandu's sons'
इति सम्प्रयाणम्
this departure
शृणोति-अलम्
listens to fully
स्वस्ति-अयनम् पवित्रम्
blessings' house, pure
लब्ध्वा हरौ भक्तिम्-
gaining in the Lord devotion,
उपैति सिद्धिम्
attains final beatitude

Who-so-ever listens fully to this departure of the beloveds of the Lord, the sons of Paandu, which is pure and is a storehouse of blessings, gains devotion in the Lord and attains final beatitude.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां प्रथमस्कन्धे

पाण्डवस्वर्गारोहणं नाम पञ्चदश: अध्याय: ॥१५॥


Thus ends the fifteenth discourse entitled the 'Ascent of the Paandavas to Heaven', in Book One of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
