श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
तस्यां विदर्भोऽजनयत् पुत्रौ नाम्ना कुशक्रथौ ।

तृतीयं रोमपादं च विदर्भकुलनन्दनम् ॥१॥


तस्याम् विदर्भ:-अजनयत्
from her Vidarbha begot
पुत्रौ नाम्ना कुश-क्रथौ
sons by name Kusha and Kratha
तृतीयम् रोमपादम् च
third Romapaada and
विदर्भ-कुल-नन्दनम्
was Vidarbha family's delight

From Bhojyaa Vidarbha begot two sons, Kusha and Kratha by name. The third, Romapaada, was the delight of the Vidarbha family.


रोमपादसुतो बभ्रुर्बभ्रो: कृतिरजायत ।

उशिकस्तत्सुतस्तस्माच्चेदिश्चैद्यादयो नृप ॥२॥

Romapaada's son Babhroo
बभ्रो: कृति:-अजायत
of Babhroo Kriti was born
उशिक:-तत्-सुत:-तस्मात्-
Ushika was his son, from him
चेदि:-चैद्य-आदय: नृप
Chedi, the Chaidya and others O King!

O King! Romapaada's son Babhroo, from Babhroo Kriti was born, his son was Ushika, from him was Chedi whose clan was known as Chaidya.


क्रथस्य कुन्ति: पुत्रोऽभूद् धृष्टिस्तस्याथ निर्वृति: ।

ततो दशार्हो नाम्नाभूत् तस्य व्योम: सुतस्तत: ॥३॥


क्रथस्य कुन्ति: पुत्र:-अभूत्
of Kratha Kunti the son was,
धृष्टि:-तस्य-अथ निर्वृति:
Dhrishti his then Nirvriti
तत: दशार्ह: नाम्ना-अभूत्
from him Dashaarha, named was (born)
तस्य व्योम: सुत:-तत:
his Vyoma, the son from him

Kratha's son was Kunti, his son was Dhrishti, then his son was Nirvriti, from him the son named Dashaarha was born, his son Vyoma was born from him.


जीमूतो विकृतिस्तस्य यस्य भीमरथ: सुत: ।

ततो नवरथ: पुत्रो जातो दशरथस्तत: ॥४॥

(His) Jeemoota, Vikriti his
यस्य भीमरथ: सुत:
whose Bheemaratha the son

from him Navaratha the son

Vyoma's son was Jeemoota, whose son was Vikriti, the son Bheemaratha was born from him, from him Navaratha was born and Dasharatha was born from him.


करम्भि: शकुने: पुत्रो देवरातस्तदात्मज: ।

देवक्षत्रस्ततस्तस्य मधु: कुरुवशादनु: ॥५॥


करम्भि: शकुने: पुत्र:
Karambhi was Shakuni's son
देवरात:-तत्-आत्मज:
Devaraata was his son
देवक्षत्र:-तत:-तस्य
Devakshatra from him, his
मधु: कुरुवशात्-अनु:
Madhu from Kuruvasha Anu

Karambhi was Shakuni's son, his son was Devavrata, from him Devakshatra was born, his son was Madhu, and his son was Kuruvasha, from whom Anu was born.


पुरुहोत्रस्त्वनो: पुत्रस्तस्यायु: सात्वतस्तत: ।

भजमानो भजिर्दिव्यो वृष्णिर्देवावृधोऽन्धक: ॥६॥


पुरुहोत्र:-तु-अनो: पुत्र:-
Putrahotra, indeed Anu's son,
तस्य-आयु: सात्वत:-तत:
his Aayu, Saatvata from him
भजमान: भजि:-दिव्य:-
Bhajamaana, Bhaji, Divya,
वृष्णि:-देवावृध:-अन्धक:
Vrishni, Devaavridha, Andhaka

Indeed, Anu's son was Putrahotra, his son was Aayu, Saatvata was born from him, from him Bhajamaana, Bhaji, Divya, Vrishni, Devaavridha and Andhaka.


सात्वतस्य सुता: सप्त महाभोजश्च मारिष ।

भजमानस्य निम्लोचि: किङ्किणो धृष्टिरेव च ॥७॥


सात्वतस्य सुता: सप्त
Saatvata sons were seven
महाभोज:-च मारिष
Mahaabhoja and, O Pareekshit!
भजमानस्य निम्लोचि:
of Bhajamaana Nimlochi,
किङ्किण: धृष्टि:-एव च
Kinkina, Dhrishti also and

O Pareekshit! Saatvata's were seven sons, including Mahaabhoja. Nimlochi was Bhajamaana's son, and also Kinkina, and Dhrishti.


एकस्यामात्मजा: पत्न्यामन्यस्यां च त्रय: सुता: ।

शताजिच्च सहस्राजिदयुताजिदिति प्रभो ॥८॥


एकस्याम्-आत्मजा: पत्न्याम्-
from one, sons, wife,
अन्यस्याम् च त्रय: सुता:
from another and three sons
शताजित्-च सहस्राजित्-
Shataajit, and Sahasraajit,
अयुताजित्-इति प्रभो
Ayutaajit thus, O lord!

O lord! From one wife the seven sons, and from the another were three, Shataajit, Sahasraajit, and Ayutaajit thus.


बभ्रुर्देवावृधसुतस्तयो: श्लोकौ पठन्त्यमू।

यथैव शृणुमो दूरात् सम्पश्यामस्तथान्तिकात् ॥९॥


बभ्रु:-देवावृध-सुत:-
Babhroo, Devaavridha son
तयो: श्लोकौ पठन्ति-अमू
of the two, couplets are recited these
यथा-एव शृणुम: दूरात्
just as is heard from afar,
सम्पश्याम:-तथा-अन्तिकात्
is seen like that from near

Devaavridha son was Babhroo. About both of them, these two couplets are recited, just as it is heard from afar, like that is seen from near.


बभ्रु: श्रेष्ठो मनुष्याणां देवैर्देवावृध: सम: ।

पुरुषा: पञ्चषष्टिश्च षट् सहस्राणि चाष्ट च ॥१०॥


बभ्रु: श्रेष्ठ: मनुष्याणाम्
Babhroo, eminent among men,
देवै:-देवावृध: सम:
with the gods Devaavridha is equal
पुरुषा: पञ्चषष्टि:-च
men, five six and (sixty five)
षट् सहस्राणि च-अष्ट च
six thousand and eight and

Babhroo was eminent among men, and Devaavridha was equal with the gods. Men who attained salvation through them were fourteen thousand and sixty-five.


येऽमृतत्वमनुप्राप्ता बभ्रोर्देवावृधादपि ।

महाभोजोऽपि धर्मात्मा भोजा आसंस्तदन्वये ॥११॥


ये-अमृतत्वम्-अनुप्राप्ता:
those who salvation have attained
बभ्रो:-देवावृधात्-अपि
from Babhroo and Devaavridha also
महाभोज:-अपि धर्मात्मा
Mahaabhoja also was righteous minded,
भोजा: आसन्-तत्-अन्वये
Bhojas became his in clan

They were those who attained salvation through Babhroo and Devaavridha. Mahaabhoja also was righteous minded and those born in his clan were called the Bhojas.


वृष्णे: सुमित्र: पुत्रोऽभूद् युधाजिच्च परंतप ।

शिनिस्तस्यानमित्रश्च निम्नोऽभूदनमित्रत: ॥१२॥


वृष्णे: सुमित्र: पुत्र:-अभूत्
of Vrishnee, Sumitra, the son was born
युधाजित्-च परंतप
Yudhaajit and, O Pareekshit!
शिनि:-तस्य-अनमित्र:-च
Shini his, Anamitra and
निम्न:-अभूत्-अनमित्रत:
Nimna was born from Anamitra

O Pareekshit! Sumitra and Yudhaajit were the sons born to Vrishnee. Shini and Anamitra were Yudhaajit's sons, and Nimna was born from Anamitra.


सत्राजित: प्रसेनश्च निम्नस्याप्यासतु: सुतौ ।

अनमित्रसुतो योऽन्य: शिनिस्तस्याथ सत्यक: ॥१३॥

Nimna's also were the sons

Anamitra's son who was the other

Shini was his, then Satyaka

Nimna's sons were Satraajit and also Prasena. The other son of Anamitra, who was Shini, his son was Satyaka.


युयुधान: सात्यकिर्वै जयस्तस्य कुणिस्तत: ।

युगन्धरोऽनमित्रस्य वृष्णि: पुत्रोऽपरस्तत: ॥१४॥


युयुधान: सात्यकि:-वै
Yuyudhaana Satyak's indeed
जय:-तस्य कुणि:-तत:
Jaya his, Kuni from him
युगन्धर:-अनमित्रस्य
Yugandhara of Anamitra
वृष्णि: पुत्र:-अपर:-तत:
Vrishni the son other from him

Indeed, Satyak's son was Yuyudhaana, his son was Jaya, from him Kuni was born. Yugandhara was Anamitra's son and Vrishni was his other son.


श्वफल्कश्चित्ररथश्च गान्दिन्यां च श्वफल्कत: ।

अक्रूरप्रमुखा आसन् पुत्रा द्वादश विश्रुता: ॥१५॥

Akroora, the foremost were

Vrishnees sons were Shvaphalka and Chitraratha. Through Gaandinee, from Shvaphalka were twelve well known sons, of them Akroora was the foremost.


आसङ्ग: सारमेयश्च मृदुरो मृदुविद् गिरि: ।

धर्मवृद्ध: सुकर्मा च क्षेत्रोपेक्षोऽरिमर्दन: ॥१६॥

शत्रुघ्नो गन्धमादश्च प्रतिबाहुश्च द्वादश ।

तेषां स्वसा सुचीराख्या द्वावक्रूरसुतावपि ॥१७॥

Pratibaahu and the twelve
तेषाम् स्वसा सुचीरा-आख्या
their sister Sucheeraa named

two Akroora's sons also

Shatrughna, Gandhamaada and Pratibaahu were the twelve. Their sister was named as Sucheeraa. Akroora also had two sons.


देववानुपदेवश्च तथा चित्ररथात्मजा: ।

पृथुर्विदूरथाद्याश्च बहवो वृष्णिनन्दना: ॥१८॥


देववान्-उपदेव:-च
Devavaan Upadeva and
तथा चित्ररथ-आत्मजा:
and Chitraratha's sons,
पृथु:-विदूरथ-आद्या:-च
Prithu, Vidooratha and others
बहव: वृष्णि-नन्दना:
many of Vrishnees the delight

They were Devavaan and Upadeva. And Chitraratha's sons were Prithu, Vidooratha and many others who were the delight of the Vrishnees.


कुकुरो भजमानश्च शुचि: कम्बलबर्हिष: ।

कुकुरस्य सुतो वह्निर्विलोमा तनयस्तत: ॥१९॥

Kukura, Bhajamaana and
शुचि: कम्बलबर्हिष:
Shuchi, Kambalabarhisha
कुकुरस्य सुत: वह्नि:-
Kukura's son Vahni,
विलोमा तनय:-तत:
Viloma son from him

Kukura, Bhajamaana, Shuchi and Kambalabarhisha were the sons of Andhaka. Kukura's son was Vahni and Viloma was born from him.


कपोतरोमा तस्यानु: सखा यस्य च तुम्बुरु: ।

अन्धकौ दुन्दुभिस्तस्मादरिद्योत: पुनर्वसु: ॥२०॥


कपोतरोमा तस्य-अनु:
Kapotaroma (Viloma's), his Anu,
सखा यस्य च तुम्बुरु:
the friend whose and Tumburu
अन्धकौ दुन्दुभि:-तस्मात्-
of Andhaka Dundubhi from him
अरिद्योत: पुनर्वसु:
Aridyota, then Punarvasu

Kapotaroma was Viloma's son, his son was Anu whose friend was Tumburu. Andhaka's son was Dundubhi, from him Aridyota was born and from him Punarvasu was born.


तस्याहुकश्चाहुकी च कन्या चैवाहुकात्मजौ ।

देवकश्चोग्रसेनश्च चत्वारो देवकात्मजा: ॥२१॥

and daughter, and also Aahuka's sons two

Punarvasu had a son Aahuka and a daughter Aahukee. Aahuka had two sons, Devaka and Ugrasena, and Devaka had four sons.


देववानुपदेवश्च सुदेवो देववर्धन: ।

तेषां स्वसार: सप्तासन् धृतदेवादयो नृप ॥२२॥

O King! They were Devavaan, Upadeva, Sudeva and Devavardhana. They had seven sisters, Dhritadevaa and others.


शान्तिदेवोपदेवा च श्रीदेवा देवरक्षिता ।

सहदेवा देवकी च वसुदेव उवाह ता: ॥२३॥


शान्तिदेवा-उपदेवा च
Shaantidevaa, Upadevaa and
श्रीदेवा देवरक्षिता
Shreedevaa, Devarakshitaa,
सहदेवा देवकी च
Sahadeva, Devakee and

Vasudeva married them

Shaantidevaa, Upadevaa Shreedevaa, Devarakshitaa, Sahadeva and Devakee, and Vasudeva married them.


कंस: सुनामा न्यग्रोध: कङ्क: शङ्कु: सुहूस्तथा ।

राष्ट्रपालोऽथ सृष्टिश्च तुष्टिमानौग्रसेनय: ॥२४॥

Kansa, Sunaamaa, Nyagrodha, Kanka, Shanku, Suhoo, Raashtrapaala, and then Srishti and Tushtimaana were all Ugrasena's sons.


कंसा कंसवती कङ्का शूरभू राष्ट्रपालिका ।

उग्रसेनदुहितरो वसुदेवानुजस्त्रिय: ॥२५॥

Kansaa, Kansavatee, Kankaa, Shoorabhoo, Raashtrapaalikaa, were Ugrasena's daughters, who were the wives of Vasudeva's younger brother.


शूरो विदूरथादासीद् भजमान: सुतस्तत: ।

शिनिस्तस्मात् स्वयम्भोजो हृदीकस्तत्सुतो मत: ॥२६॥

देवबाहु: शतधनु: कृतवर्मेति तत्सुता: ।

देवमीढस्य शूरस्य मारिषा नाम पत्न्यभूत् ॥२७॥


देवबाहु: शतधनु:

कृतवर्मा-इति तत्-सुता:
Kritavarmaa these were his sons

Maarishaa named wife became

Devabaahu, Shatadhanu, Kritavarmaa these were the sons of Hrideeka. Devameedha's son Shoora's wife's name was Maarishaa.


तस्यां स जनयामास दश पुत्रानकल्मषान् ।

वसुदेवं देवभागं देवश्रवसमानकम् ॥२८॥

सृञ्जयं श्यामकं कङ्कं शमीकं वत्सकं वृकम् ।

देवदुन्दुभयो नेदुरानका यस्य जन्मनि ॥२९॥


सृञ्जयम् श्यामकम् कङ्कम्
Srinjaya, Shyaamaka, Kanka,
शमीकम् वत्सकम् वृकम्
Shameeka, Vatsaka, Vrika
देव-दुन्दुभय: नेदु:-
of the gods the trumpets sounded and

drums, on whose birth

Srinjaya, Shyaamaka, Kanka, Shameeka, Vatsaka, and Vrika. On whose birth the gods' sounded trumpets and drums.


वसुदेवं हरे: स्थानं वदन्त्यानकदुन्दुभिम् ।

पृथा च श्रुतदेवा च श्रुतकीर्ति: श्रुतश्रवा: ॥३०॥


वसुदेवम् हरे: स्थानम्
Vasudeva of Shree Hari's place (father)
वदन्ति-आनकदुन्दुभिम्
(they) say, (also called) Aanakadundubhi
पृथा च श्रुतदेवा च
Prithaa and Shrutadevaa and
श्रुतकीर्ति: श्रुतश्रवा:
Shrutakeerti, Shrutashravaa

They say that Vasudeva, also known as Aanakadundubhi was the father of Shree Hari. Their sisters were Prithaa, Shrutadevaa, Shrutakeerti and Shrutashravaa.


राजाधिदेवी चैतेषां भगिन्य: पञ्च कन्यका: ।

कुन्ते: सख्यु: पिता शूरो ह्यपुत्रस्य पृथामदात् ॥३१॥


राजाधिदेवी च-एतेषाम्
Raajaadhidevee, and of these
भगिन्या पञ्च कन्यका:
sisters, five daughters
कुन्ते: सख्यु: पिता शूर:
to Kunti the friend, the father Shoora
हि-अपुत्रस्य पृथाम्-अदात्
indeed the issueless, Prithaa gave

And Raajaadhidevee the five daughters were their sisters. Their father Shoora gave Prithaa to his issueless friend Kunti.


साऽऽप दुर्वाससो विद्यां देवहूतीं प्रतोषितात् ।

तस्या वीर्यपरीक्षार्थमाजुहाव रविं शुचिम् ॥३२॥


सा-आप-दुर्वासस: विद्याम्
she gained from Durvaasaa, the knowledge
देवहूतीम् प्रतोषितात्
of the gods invoking, the highly pleased
तस्या: वीर्य-परीक्षा-अर्थम्-
of that, the power to test the efficacy
आजुहाव रविम् शुचिम्
invoked the Sun lustrous

From the highly pleased Durvaasaa, she gained the knowledge of the invoking of the gods. To test the efficacy of that knowledge, she invoked the lustrous Sun.


तदैवोपागतं देवं वीक्ष्य विस्मितमानसा ।

प्रत्ययार्थं प्रयुक्ता मे याहि देव क्षमस्व मे ॥३३॥


तदा-एव-उपागतम् देवम्
then only arrived the god
वीक्ष्य विस्मित-मानसा
observing, bewildered minded
प्रत्यय-अर्थम् प्रयुक्ता मे
for trial purpose employed by me
याहि देव क्षमस्व मे
return, O lord! forgive me

At that moment only the god arrived. She observed that with a bewildered mind, and said, 'I employed the knowledge for the purpose of trial, please forgive me and return.'


अमोघं दर्शनं देवि आधित्से त्वयि चात्मजम् ।

योनिर्यथा न दुष्येत कर्ताहं ते सुमध्यमे ॥३४॥


अमोघम् दर्शनम् देवि
fruitful the sight, O divine lady!
आधित्से त्वयि च-आत्मजम्
Wish to beget in you and a son
योनि:-यथा न दुष्येत
virginity so as may not be impaired
कर्ता-अहम् ते सुमध्यमे
will do that I for you, O Beautiful one!

'O divine lady! my sight is not fruitless. I wish to beget a son in you. I will arrange so that your virginity is not impaired, O Beautiful one.'


इति तस्यां स आधाय गर्भं सूर्योदिवं गत: ।

सद्य: कुमार: संजज्ञे द्वितीय इव भास्कर: ॥३५॥


इति तस्याम् स: आधाय
thus in her he depositing
गर्भम् सूर्य:-दिवम् गत:
the seed, the Sun to heaven went
सद्य: कुमार: संजज्ञे
immediately a baby boy was born,
द्वितीय इव भास्कर:
second as if the Sun

Thus, depositing the seed in her, the Sun went away to heaven. Immediately a baby boy was born, second to the Sun.


तं सात्यजन्नदीतोये कृच्छ्राल्लोकस्य बिभ्यती ।

प्रपितामहस्तामुवाह पाण्डुर्वै सत्यविक्रम: ॥३६॥


तम् सा-अत्यजत्-नदी-तोये
him she abandoned, in the river water,
कृच्छ्रात्-लोकस्य बिभ्यती
of defame of the people afraid of
प्रपितामह:-ताम्-उवाह
great-grand-father her married
पाण्डु:-वै सत्य-विक्रम:
Paandu, indeed of genuine valour

Afraid of being defamed by the people, she abandoned him in the river water. Your great-grand-father, Paandu of genuine valour, married her.


श्रुतदेवां तु कारूषो वृद्धशर्मा समग्रहीत् ।

यस्यामभूद् दन्तवक्त्र ऋषिशप्तो दिते: सुत: ॥३७॥


श्रुतदेवाम् तु कारूष:
Shrutadevaa indeed of Kaaroosha (land)
वृद्धशर्मा समग्रहीत्
Vridhasharmaa married
यस्याम्-अभूत् दन्तवक्त्र:
from whom was (born) Dantavaktra
ऋषि-शप्त: दिते: सुत:
by the sage cursed, Diti's son

The king of the land of Kaaroosha married Shrutadevaa, from whom was born Dantavaktra, who was previously born to Diti, and was cursed by the sage.


कैकेयो धृष्टकेतुश्च श्रुतकीर्तिमविन्दत ।

सन्तर्दनादयस्तस्य पञ्चासन् कैकया: सुता: ॥३८॥


कैकेय: धृष्टकेतु:-च
of Kaikeya (land) Dhrishtaketu and
श्रुतकीर्तिम्-अविन्दत
Shrutakeerti married

Santardana and others, his
पञ्च-आसन् कैकया: सुता:
five were Kaikeya princes

Dhrishtaketu, the king of Kaikey land had married Shrutakeerti. He had five sons, Santardana and others, the Kaikeya princes.


राजाधिदेव्यामावन्त्यौ जयसेनोऽजनिष्ट ह ।

दमघोषश्चेदिराज: श्रुतश्रवसमग्रहीत् ॥३९॥

from Raajaadhidevi, of Avanti the two,
जयसेन: अजनिष्ट ह
Jayasena begot indeed
दमघोष:-चेदिराज:
Damaghosha, the Chedi king
श्रुतश्रवसम्-अग्रहीत्
Shrutasavaa married

Jayasena begot two sons, the kings of Avanti through Raajaadhidevi. The Chedi king Damaghosha married Shrutasavaa.


शिशुपाल: सुतस्तस्या: कथितस्तस्य सम्भव: ।

देवभागस्य कंसायां चित्रकेतुबृहद्बलौ ॥४०॥


शिशुपाल: सुत:-तस्या:
Shishupaala son her's
कथित:-तस्य सम्भव:
is said (of) his birth
देवभागस्य कंसायाम्
of Devabhaaga through Kansaa
चित्रकेतु:-बृहद्बलौ
Chitraketu and Brihadbala (two sons)

Her son was Shishupaala, of whose birth has been said before. Devabhaaga had two sons through Kansaa, Chitraketu and Brihadbala.


कंसवत्यां देवश्रवस: सुवीर इषुमांस्तथा ।

कङ्कायामानकाज्जात: सत्यजित् पुरुजित् तथा ॥४१॥


कंसवत्याम् देवश्रवस:
from Kamsavati of Devashrava
सुवीर इषुमान्-तथा
Suveera Ishumaan and
कङ्कायाम्-आनकात्-
through Kankaa from Aanaka
जात: सत्यजित् पुरुजित् तथा
were born Satyajit Purujit and

Devashrava had two sons through Kansavati, Suveera and Ishumaan, and Aanaka had two sons Satyajit and Purujit, through Kankaa.


सृञ्जयो राष्ट्रपाल्यां च वृषदुर्मर्षणादिकान् ।

हरिकेशहिरण्याक्षौ शूरभूम्यां च श्यामक: ॥४२॥


सृञ्जय: राष्ट्रपाल्याम् च
Srinjaya through Raashtrapaalee and
वृष-दुर्मर्षण-आदिकान्
Vrisha, Durmarshana and others
हरिकेश-हिरण्याक्षौ
Harikesha and Hiranyaaksha the two
शूरभूम्याम् च श्यामक:
through Shoorabhoomi and Shyamaka

And through Raashtrapaalee, Srinjaya begot Vrisha, Durmarshana and others. And Shyamaka, through Shoorabhoomi begot the two sons Harikesha and Hiranyaaksha.


मिश्रकेश्यामप्सरसि वृकादीन् वत्सकस्तथा ।

तक्षपुष्करशालादीन् दुर्वार्क्ष्यां वृक आदधे ॥४३॥


मिश्रकेश्याम्-अप्सरसि
from Mishrakeshee, the celestial nymph
वृक-आदीन् वत्सक:-तथा
Vrika and others, Vatsaka, and
तक्षपुष्कर-शाला-आदीन्
Taksha, Pushkara, Shaala and others
दुर्वार्क्ष्याम् वृक आदधे
through Durvaraakshee, Vrika begot

Vatsaka begot through Mishrakeshee, the celestial nymph, Vrika and others, and Vrika begot through Durvaraakshee, Taksha, Pushkara, Shaala and others.


सुमित्रार्जुनपालादीञ्छमीकात्तु सुदामिनी ।

कङ्कश्च कर्णिकायां वै ऋतधामजयावपि ॥४४॥


सुमित्र-अर्जुनपाल-आदीन्-
Sumitra, Arjunapaala and others
शमीकात्-तु सुदामिनी
from Shameeka indeed Sudaamini
कङ्क:-च कर्णिकायाम् वै
Kanka and through Karnikaa indeed
ऋतुधाम-जयौ-अपि
Ritudhaama Jaya both also

From Shameeka, indeed, Sudaamini gave birth to Sumitra, Arjunapaala and others. And indeed through Karnikaa Kanka begot the two, Ritudhaama and also Jaya.


पौरवी रोहिणी भद्रा मदिरा रोचना इला ।

देवकीप्रमुखा आसन् पत्न्या आनकदुन्दुभे: ॥४५॥


पौरवी रोहिणी भद्रा
Pauravee, Rohinee, Bhadraa,
मदिरा रोचना इला
Madiraa, Rochanaa, Ilaa
देवकी-प्रमुखा: आसन्
Devaki the foremost, were
पत्न्या: आनकदुन्दुभे:
the wives of Aanakadundubhi

The wives of Aanakadundubhi (Vasudeva) were Pauravee, Rohinee, Bhadraa, Madiraa, Rochanaa, Ilaa and Devaki, who was the foremost.


बलं गदं सारणं च दुर्मदं विपुलं ध्रुवम् ।

वसुदेवस्तु रोहिण्यां कृतादीनुदपादयत् ॥४६॥


बलम् गदम् सारणम् च
Bala, Gada, Saarana and
दुर्मदम् विपुलम् ध्रुवम्
Durmada, Vipula, Dhruva,
वसुदेव:-तु रोहिण्याम्
Vasudeva indeed through Rohinee,
कृतादीन्-उदपादयत्
Krita and others begot

Vasudeva through Rohinee begot Bala, Gada, Saarana, Durmada, Vipula, Dhruva, Krita and others.


सुभद्रो भद्रवाहश्च दुर्मदो भद्र एव च ।

पौरव्यास्तनया ह्येते भूताद्या द्वादशाभवन् ॥४७॥


सुभद्र: भद्रवाह:-च
Subhadra, Bhadravaaha, and
दुर्मद: भद्र: एव च
Durmada, Bhadra also and
पौरव्या:-तनया: हि-एते
Pauravee's sons indeed these
भूत-आद्या: द्वादश-अभवन्
Bhoota and others twelve were born

Subhadra, Bhadravaaha, and Durmada, Bhadra indeed these, also and Bhoota and others Pauravee's twelve sons were born.


नन्दोपनन्दकृतकशूराद्या मदिरात्मजा: ।

कौसल्या केशिनं त्वेकमसूत कुलनन्दनम् ॥४८॥


नन्द-उपनन्द-कृतक-शूर-
Nanda, Upananda, Kritaka, Shoora
आद्या: मदिरा-आत्मजा:
and others were Madira's sons
कौसल्या केशिनम् तु-एकम्-
Kausalyaa, Keshee indeed, one
असूत कुल-नन्दनम्
gave birth to the family's delight

Nanda, Upananda, Kritaka, Shoora and others were Madira's sons. Kausalyaa indeed, gave birth to one son, the delight of the family, Keshee.


रोचनायामतो जाता हस्तहेमाङ्गदादय: ।

इलायामुरुवल्कादीन् यदुमुख्यानजीजनत् ॥४९॥


रोचनायाम्-अत: जाता:
through Rochanaa, then, (Keshee's), were born,
हस्त-हेमाङ्गद-आदय:
Hasta, Hemaangada and others
इलायाम्-उरुवल्क-आदीन्
through Ila, Uruvalka and others
यदु-मुख्यान्-अजीजनत्
Yadu's foremost begot

Then, Keshee's sons through Rochanaa were Hasta, Hemaangada and others were born. Through Ilaa, he begot the sons, the foremost of the Yadus, Uruvalka and others.


विपृष्ठो धृतदेवायामेक आनकदुन्दुभे: ।

शान्तिदेवात्मजा राजञ्छ्रमप्रतिश्रुतादय: ॥५०॥


विपृष्ठ: धृतदेवायाम्-
Viprishta through Dhritadevaa
एक: आनकदुन्दुभे:
alone was Vasudeva's (son)
शान्तिदेव-आत्मजा: राजन्-
Shaantideva's sons, O King!
श्रम-प्रतिश्रुत-आदय:
Shrama, Pratishruta and others

O King! Vasudeva had only one son Viprishta through Dhritadevaa, and Shaantidevaa's sons were Shrama, Pratishruta and others.


राजान: कल्पवर्षाद्या उपदेवासुता दश ।

वसुहंससुवंशाद्या: श्रीदेवायास्तु षट् सुता: ॥५१॥


राजान: कल्पवर्ष-आद्या:
kings Kalpavarsha and others
उपदेवा-सुता: दश
Upadev's sons ten
वसु-हंस-सुवंश-आद्या:
Vasu, Hansa, Suvansha and others
श्रीदेवाया:-तु षट् सुता:
Shreedeva's indeed were six sons

The kings, Kalpavarsha and others, were Upadeva's ten sons. Indeed Shreedeva's six sons were Vasu, Hansa, Suvansha and others.


देवरक्षितया लब्धा नव चात्र गदादय: ।

वसुदेव: सुतानष्टावादधे सहदेवया ॥५२॥


देवरक्षितया लब्धा: नव
through Devarakshitaa begot nine
च-अत्र गद-आदय:
and here Gada and others,
वसुदेव: सुतान्-अष्टौ-
Vasudeva sons eight
आदधे सहदेवया
begot through Sahadevaa

Vasudeva begot Gada and others, nine sons through Devarakshitaa, and through Sahadevaa he begot eight sons.


पुरुविश्रुतमुख्यांस्तु साक्षाद् धर्मो वसूनिव ।

वसुदेवस्तु देवक्यामष्ट पुत्रानजीजनत् ॥५३॥


पुरु-विश्रुत मुख्यान्-तु
Puru, Vishruta, the leading indeed
साक्षात् धर्म: वसून्-इव
themselves Dharma Vasus as
वसुदेवस्तु देवक्याम्-
Vasudeva, indeed through Devakee
अष्ट पुत्रान्-अजीजनत्
eight sons begot

Puru and Vishruta the leading. Just as himself Dharma had created the Vasus, Vasudeva begot through Devaki eight sons.


कीर्तिमन्तं सुषेणं च भद्रसेनमुदारधी: ।

ऋजुं सम्मर्दनं भद्रं संकर्षणमहीश्वरम् ॥५४॥


कीर्तिमन्तम् सुषेणम् च
Keertimaan, Sushena, and
भद्रसेनम्-उदारधी:
Bhadrasena, the high minded
ऋजुम् सम्मर्दनम् भद्रम्
Riju, Sammardana, Bhadra,
संकर्षण-महीश्वरम्
Sankarshana, the earth's lord

The eight sons of the high minded Vasudeva were, Keertimaan, Sushena, and Bhadrasena, Riju, Sammardana, Bhadra, and the lord of the earth Sankarshana.


अष्टमस्तु तयोरासीत् स्वयमेव हरि: किल ।

सुभद्रा च महाभागा तव राजन् पितामही ॥५५॥


अष्टम:-तु तयो:-आसीत्
the eighth indeed, of the two was
स्वयम्-एव हरि: किल
Himself only Lord Shree Hari, definitely
सुभद्रा च महाभागा
Subhadraa and the highly blessed
तव राजन् पितामही
your's O King! the grandmother

And indeed, the eighth one was the Lord Shree Hari Himself, definitely. O King! Your grandmother was the highly blessed Subhadraa.


यदा यदेह धर्मस्य क्षयो वृद्धिश्च पाप्मन: ।

तदा तु भगवानीश आत्मानं सृजते हरि: ॥५६॥


यदा यदा-इह धर्मस्य
when ever, here, of virtues'
क्षय: वृद्धि:-च पाप्मन:
decline, increase and of sins
तदा तु भगवान्-ईश
then indeed, Lord Almighty
आत्मानम् सृजते हरि:
Himself manifests Shree Hari

Whenever there is a decline in the virtues, and the sins increase, then indeed, The Almighty Lord Shree Hari manifests Himself.


न ह्यस्य जन्मनो हेतु: कर्मणो वा महीपते ।

आत्ममायां विनेशस्य परस्य द्रष्टुरात्मन: ॥५७॥


न हि-अस्य जन्मन: हेतु:
not certainly, His appearance's reason is
कर्मण: वा महीपते
of actions or, O King!
आत्म-मायाम् विना-ईशस्य
Own Maaya except, of The Lord
परस्य द्रष्टु:-आत्मन:
Supreme, The Witness of the souls

O King! There is no reason for the appearance or the actions of The Supreme Lord, The Witness of all the souls, except for His Own Maayaa.


यन्मायाचेष्टितं पुंस: स्थित्युत्पत्त्यप्ययाय हि ।

अनुग्रहस्तन्निवृत्तेरात्मलाभाय चेष्यते ॥५८॥


यत्-माया चेष्टितम् पुंस:
Whose Maayaa's activity, for the people
स्थिति-उत्पत्ति-अप्ययाय हि
birth, continuance, destruction only
अनुग्रह:-तत्-निवृत्ते:-
grace His, for the cessation (of the same)
आत्म-लाभाय च-इष्यते
Self Realization and conduces

Whose Maayaa's activity is for the purpose of the birth, continuance and destruction of the embodied souls, and His grace is conducive for the cessation of the same and for Self Realization.


अक्षौहिणीनां पतिभिरसुरैर्नृपलाञ्छनै: ।

भुव आक्रम्यमाणाया आभाराय कृतोद्यम: ॥५९॥


अक्षौहिणीनाम् पतिभि:-
of the Akshauhini masters
असुरै:-नृप-लाञ्छनै:
the demons, as kings posing
भुव: आक्रम्यमाणाया
the earth over-running
आभाराय कृतोद्यम:
burdenless to render, performed deeds

He, performed deeds to render the earth burdenless, which was over-run by the demons, posing as kings who were the possessors of many a Akshauhini armies.


कर्माण्यपरिमेयाणि मनसापि सुरेश्वरै: ।

सहसंकर्षणश्चक्रे भगवान् मधुसूदन ॥६०॥


कर्माणि-अपरिमेयाणि
deeds unfathomable
मनसा-अपि सुरेश्वरै:
by the mind even of the gods' rulers
सह-संकर्षण:-चक्रे
with Sankarshana, (Balaraama) performed
भगवान् मधुसूदन
The Almighty Madhusoodana (Slayer of Madhu)

The Almighty Madhusoodana, with Sankarshana, (Balaraama) performed unfathomable deeds which were not possible to comprehend even by the rulers of the gods.


कलौ जनिष्यमाणानां दु:खशोकतमोनुदम् ।

अनुग्रहाय भक्तानां सुपुण्यं व्यतनोद् यश: ॥६१॥


कलौ जनिष्यमाणानाम्
in Kali (yuga), going to be born,
दु:ख-शोक-तम:-नुदम्
sorrow, grief, ignorance capable of removing
अनुग्रहाय भक्तानाम्
to grace the devotees
सुपुण्यम् व्यतनोत् यश:
the sacred spread glory

He spread the most sacred glory capable of removing the sorrow, grief, and ignorance of the devotees to be born in Kali Yuga, and to grace them.


यस्मिन् सत्कर्णपीयूषे यशस्तीर्थवरे सकृत् ।

श्रोत्राञ्जलिरुपस्पृश्य धुनुते कर्मवासनाम् ॥६२॥


यस्मिन् सत्-कर्ण-पीयूषे
in that, in righteous ears the nectar
यश:-तीर्थ-वरे सकृत्
glory of the holiest order, (just) once,
श्रोत्र-अञ्जलि उपस्पृश्य
by ears, as hollow of palms put together, sipping
धुनुते कर्म-वासनाम्
shakes off, of actions' the tendencies

So much so, that, if, even for once, the righteous, by their ears, as the hollow of the palms put to gather, sip from that stream of glory of the holiest order, which is nectar like, will shake off the tendencies of the actions.


भोजवृष्ण्यन्धकमधुशूरसेनदशार्हकै: ।

श्लाघनीयेहित: शश्वत् कुरुसृञ्जयपाण्डुभि: ॥६३॥


भोज-वृष्णि-अन्धक-
by the Bhojas, Vrishnees, Andhakas,
मधु-शूरसेन-दशार्हकै:
Madhus, Shoorasenas, Dashaarhakas,
श्लाघनीय-ईहित: शश्वत्
the praiseworthy activities are praised consistently,
कुरु-सृञ्जय-पाण्डुभि:
by the Kurus, Srinjayas, and the Paandus

Whose praiseworthy activities are constantly praised by the Bhojas, Vrishnees, Andhakas, Madhus, Shoorasenas, Dashaarhakas, Kurus, Srinjayas, and the Paandus.


स्निग्धस्मितेक्षितोदारैर्वाक्यैर्विक्रमलीलया ।

नृलोकं रमयामास मूर्त्या सर्वाङ्गरम्यया ॥६४॥


स्निग्ध-स्मित-
by loving smiles,
इक्षित-उदारै:-वाक्यै:-
glances sweet and words
विक्रम-लीलया
valorous deeds
नृ-लोकम् रमयामास
the world of mankind bewitched
मूर्त्या सर्वाङ्ग-रम्यया
personality in all limbs charming

He bewitched the world of mankind by His sweet words, loving smile and glances, valorous deeds, divine personality charming in all limbs.


यस्याननं मकरकुण्डलचारुकर्ण-

भ्राजत्कपोलसुभगं सविलासहासम् ।

नित्योत्सवं न ततृपुर्दृशिभि: पिबन्त्यो

नार्यो नराश्च मुदिता: कुपिता निमेश्च ॥६५॥


यस्य-आननम्
Whose face
मकर-कुण्डल-
by alligator (shaped) ear-rings
चारु-कर्ण-
lovely ears
भ्राजत्-कपोल-सुभगम्
making to shine the cheeks charming,
सविलास-हासम्
with a graceful smile
नित्य-उत्सवम्
ever celebrating
न ततृपु:-दृशिभि:
not sated with their eyes
पिबन्त्य: नार्य:
drinking, the women,
नरा:-च मुदिता:
men and full of joy
कुपिता: निमे:-च
enraged with Nimi

The women and men, did not feel sated as they drank joyously with their eyes, the beauty of His lustrous face rendered more charming by the lovely ears shining with the lovely alligator shaped ear-rings, and the ever celebrating graceful smile, and they were also enraged with Nimi, who is responsible for the blinking of their eyes.


जातो गत: पितृगृहाद् व्रजमेधितार्थो

हत्वारिपून् सुतशतानि कृतोरुदार: ।

उत्पाद्य तेषु पुरुष: ऋतुभि: समीजे

आत्मानमात्मनिगमं प्रथयञ्जनेषु ॥६६॥


जातो: गत:
as He was born

व्रजम्-एधित-अर्थ:
to Vraja was taken for a purpose
हत्वा-रिपून्
killing the enemies,
सुत-शतानि
sons, hundreds

The Person, by sacrifices
समीजे आत्मानम्-
propitiated Himself
आत्म-निगमम्
Own (Vedic) path
प्रथयन्-जनेषु
popularized among the people

As He was born, He was taken from His fathers house to Vraja, for a purpose. He then killed the enemies, took on many wives and through them begot hundreds of sons. The Primary Person Shri Krishna propitiated Himself by many a sacrifices and popularized His own line of speech, The Vedas among the people.


पृथ्व्या स वै गुरुभरं क्षपयन् कुरूणा-

मन्त: समुत्थकलिना युधि भूपचम्व: ।

दृष्ट्या विधूय विजये जयमुद्विघोष्य

प्रोच्योद्धवाय च परं समगात् स्वधाम ॥६७॥


पृथ्व्या: स: वै
of the earth He indeed
गुरु-भरम् क्षपयन्
the heavy burden reducing
कुरूणाम्-अन्त: समुत्थ
the Kurus among (and Paandavas) arisen
कलिना युधि
discord, in the battle
भूप-चम्व:
the kings' armies
दृष्ट्या विधूय विजये
by a glance swept away, of Vijaya's (Arjuna's)
जयम्-उद्विघोष्य
victory proclaimed
प्रोच्य-उद्धवाय च परम्
taught to Uddhava and the Supreme (knowledge)
समगात् स्वधाम
returned to Own abode

Indeed, He reduced the heavy burden of the earth by sweeping away the armies of the kings in the battle ensued because of the discord among the Kurus and the Paandavas, by a mere glance of His, and proclaimed the victory of Vijaya (Arjuna), and having taught the Supreme knowledge to His friend Uddhava, returned to His Own abode.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां

वैयासिक्यामष्टादशसाहस्र्यां संहितायां

नवमे स्कन्धे श्रीशूर्यसोमवंशानुकीर्तने

यदुवंशानुकीर्तनं नाम चतुर्विंशोऽध्याय: ॥२४॥
