श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
नन्दस्त्वात्मज उत्पन्ने जाताह्लादो महामना: ।
आहूय विप्रान् वेदज्ञान् स्नात: शुचिरलङ्कृत: ॥१॥
नन्द:-तु-आत्मजे उत्पन्ने
Nanda, indeed, on son's having born
जात-आह्लाद: महामना:
was full of rejoice, the high souled,
आहूय विप्रान् वेदज्ञान्
called for Braahmanas, the Veda knowers
स्नात: शुचि:-अलङ्कृत:
bathed, was purified and was adorned
Nanda, the high souled, was full of joy on the birth of his son. He called for the Veda knowing Braahmanas, and himself bathed, was purified and duly adorned.
वाचयित्वा स्वस्त्ययनं जातकर्मात्मजस्य वै ।
कारयामास विधिवत् पितृदेवार्चनं तथा ॥२॥
वाचयित्वा स्वस्ति-अयनम्
(he) made to be read benedictory hymns
जात-कर्म-आत्मजस्य वै
birth rituals of the sons, certainly,
कारयामास विधिवत्
made to be done in proper procedure
पितृ-देव-अर्चनम् तथा
of the mane's and gods' worship
He made them recite the benedictory hymns, and perform the rituals for the son's birth, and also made them perform worship for the manes and gods in proper procedure.
धेनूनां नियुते प्रादाद् विप्रेभ्य: समलङ्कृते ।
तिलाद्रीन् सप्त रत्नौघशातकौम्भाम्बरावृतान् ॥३॥
धेनूनाम् नियुते प्रादाद्
of cows two lakhs, gave
विप्रेभ्य: समलङ्कृते
to the Braahmanas, well adorned
तिल-अद्रीन् सप्त
sesam mountain like heaps seven
रत्न-औघ-शातकौम्भ-
gems studded golden
अम्बर-आवृतान्
covers covered with
He gave two lakh well adorned cows to the Braahmanas and seven mountain like heaps of sesame seeds, covered with golden coverings studded with gems.
कालेन स्नानशौचाभ्यां संस्कारैस्तपसेज्यया ।
शुध्यन्ति दानै: सन्तुष्ट्या द्रव्याण्यात्माऽऽत्मविद्यया ॥४॥
कालेन स्नान-शौचाभ्याम्
in time, by bathing, washing,
संस्कारै:-तपसा-इज्यया
sacraments, asceticism, sacrificial rites,
शुध्यन्ति दानै: सन्तुष्ट्या
are purified by charity and contentment,
द्रव्याणि- आत्मा-आत्म-विद्यया
material objects, soul by self-knowledge
While the material objects are purified in time, by bathing, washing, sacraments, asceticism, sacrificial rites, by charity and contentment, the Soul is purified by Self-knowledge.
सौमङ्गल्यगिरो विप्रा: सूतमागधवन्दिन: ।
गायकाश्च जगुर्नेदुर्भेर्यो दुन्दुभयो मुहु: ॥५॥
सौमङ्गल्य-गिर: विप्रा:
benedictory words (uttered) the Braahmanas
सूत-मागध-वन्दिन:
the Soota, Magadhas, Vandis
गायका:-च जगु:-नेदु:-भेर्य:
and singers sang, were sounded kettle drums
दुन्दुभय: मुहु:
and trumpets, again and again
The Braahmanas uttered benedictory words, the Soota, Maagadha, Vandis and the singers sang, kettle drums and trumpets were sounded again and again.
व्रज: सम्मृष्टसंसिक्तद्वाराजिरगृहान्तर: ।
चित्रध्वजपताकास्रक्चैलपल्लवतोरणै: ॥६॥
व्रज: सम्मृष्ट-संसिक्त-
Vraja was cleaned, water sprinkled
द्वार-अजिर-गृह-अन्तर:
on doorways, courtyards, houses interiors,
चित्र-ध्वज-पताका-स्रक्-
by various flags, festoons, garlands
चैल-पल्लव-तोरणै:
of cloth, leaves arches
Vraja was cleaned well, and water was sprinkled on its doorways, courtyards, and the interior of the houses, and they were decorated with various flags and festoons and arches made of garlands, cloth, and leaves.
गावो वृषा वत्सतरा हरिद्रातैलरूषिता: ।
विचित्र धातुबर्हस्रग्वस्त्रकाञ्चनमालिन: ॥७॥
गाव: वृषा: वत्सतरा:
cows, bulls, the grown up calves,
हरिद्रा-तैल-रूषिता:
with turmeric and oil were smeared
विचित्र धातु-बर्ह-स्रक्-
with strange metal, peacock feathers, garlands,
वस्त्र काञ्चन-मालिन:
cloth, gold necklaces (decked)
The cows, bulls, and grown up calves were smeared with turmeric and oil. They were decked with strange metal, peacock feathers, garlands, cloth, and gold necklaces.
महार्हवस्त्राभरणकञ्चुकोष्णीषभूषिता: ।
गोपा: समाययू राजन् नानोपायनपाणय: ॥८॥
महार्ह-वस्त्र-आभरण-
in costly clothes, jewels,
कञ्चुक-उष्णीष-भूषिता:
coats, turbans adorned
गोपा: समाययू राजन्
the cowherds came together, O King!
नाना-उपायन-पाणय:
various gifts carrying
O King! Adorned in costly clothes, jewels, coats, turbans, the cowherds came together carrying various gifts.
गोप्यश्चाकर्ण्य मुदिता यशोदाया: सुतोद्भवम् ।
आत्मानं भूषयाञ्चक्रुर्वस्त्राकल्पाञ्जनादिभि: ॥९॥
गोप्य:-च-आकर्ण्य मुदिता:
the Gopis and hearing of, delighted,
यशोदाया: सुत-उद्भवम्
Yashoda's son's birth
आत्मानम् भूषयान्-चक्रु:-
self adornment started
वस्त्र-आकल्प-अञ्जन-आदिभि:
with clothes, ornaments collyrium and others
The Gopis were highly delighted to hear of the birth of Yashoda's son. They started to adorn themselves with clothes, ornaments, collyrium and other things.
नवकुङ्कुमकिञ्जल्कमुखपङ्कजभूतय: ।
बलिभिस्त्वरितं जग्मु: पृथुश्रोण्यश्चलत्कुचा: ॥१०॥
नव-कुङ्कुम-किञ्जल्क-
fresh sandal and saffron paste
मुख-पङ्कज-भूतय:
face lotus like
बलिभि:-त्वरितम् जग्मु:
with the gifts in haste walked,
पृथु-श्रोण्य:-चलत्-कुचा:
with bulky buttocks and shaking breasts
With fresh sandal and saffron pastes their faces were like the lotus. Taking along the gifts, they walked hastily, in spite of their bulky buttocks and shaking breasts.
गोप्य: सुमृष्टमणिकुण्डलनिष्ककण्ठ्यश्चित्राम्बरा: पथि शिखाच्युतमाल्यवर्षा: ।
नन्दालयं सवलया व्रजतीर्विरेजुर्व्यालोल कुण्डलपयोधरहारशोभा: ॥११॥
गोप्य: सुमृष्ट-मणि-कुण्डल
the Gopis with shining gem ear-rings,
निष्क-कण्ठ्य:-चित्र-अम्बरा:
golden necklaces, various clothes
पथि शिखा-च्युत माल्य-वर्षा:
on the way, from hair falling garland showers
नन्द-आलयम् सवलया
to Nanda's house, with bangles
व्रजती:-विरेजु:-व्यालोल-
going, were charming, shaking
कुण्डल-पयोधर-हार-शोभा:
the ear-rings, the breasts with necklaces' lustre
The Gopis were wearing ear-rings studded with gems, golden necklaces, various colours clothes, on the way the flowers loosened from their hair showered, as they went to Nanda's house with bangles, they looked charming with the shaking ear-rings, and the beautiful breast with the lustre of the necklaces.
ता आशिष: प्रयुञ्जानाश्चिरं पाहीति बालके ।
हरिद्राचूर्णतैलाद्भि: सिञ्चन्त्यो जनमुज्जगु: ॥१२॥
ता: आशिष: प्रयुञ्जाना:-
they, blessings giving
चिरम् पाहि-इति बालके
'Long save', thus on the child,
हरिद्रा-चूर्ण-तैल-अद्भि:
turmeric powder, oil and water
सिञ्चन्त्य: जनम्-उत्-जगु:
sprinkling on the people, loudly sang
As they gave blessings to the child, saying, 'May He be saved for long,' they sprinkled turmeric powder, oil and water on the people and sang loudly.
अवाद्यन्त विचित्राणि वादित्राणि महोत्सवे ।
कृष्णे विश्वेश्वरेऽनन्ते नन्दस्य व्रजमागते ॥१३॥
अवाद्यन्त विचित्राणि
were played various
वादित्राणि महोत्सवे
musical instruments during the great celebration
कृष्णे विश्व-ईश्वरे-अनन्ते
on Krishna's the World's Ruler's, The Eternal's
नन्दस्य व्रजम्-आगते
to Nanda's Vraja having come
During the great celebration of The Eternal Ruler of the world, Krishna having come to Nanda's Vraja, various musical instruments were played.
गोपा: परस्परं हृष्टा दधिक्षीरघृताम्बुभि: ।
आसिञ्चन्तो विलिम्पन्तो नवनीतैश्च चिक्षिपु: ॥१४॥
गोपा: परस्परम् हृष्टा:
the Gopas on each other, very delighted,
दधि-क्षीर-घृत-अम्बुभि:
with curds, milk, ghee, water
आसिञ्चन्त: विलिम्पन्त:
drenching and smearing
नवनीतै:-च चिक्षिपु:
butter and hurled
In great delight, the Gopas drenched each other with, curds, milk, ghee and water and smeared and hurled butter at each other.
नन्दो महामनास्तेभ्यो वासोऽलङ्कारगोधनम् ।
सूतमागधवन्दिभ्यो येऽन्ये विद्योपजीविन: ॥१५॥
नन्द: महामना:-तेभ्य:
Nanda, the high souled, for them,
वास:-अलङ्कार-गो-धनम्
clothes, ornaments, cows, wealth,
सूत-मागध-वन्दिभ्य:
to the Sutas, Magadhas, Vandis,
ये-अन्ये विद्या-उपजीविन:
to those others, by the knowledge earners
Nanda, the high souled, gave them clothes, ornaments, cows, wealth, and also to the Sutas, Magadhas, Vandis, to those others who earn their living by the knowledge of arts etc.,.
तैस्तै कामैरदीनात्मा यथोचितमपूजयत् ।
विष्णोराराधनार्थाय स्वपुत्रस्योदयाय च ॥१६॥
तै:-तै: कामै:-अदीन-आत्मा
by those all desired, liberal minded (Nanda)
यथा-उचितम्-अपूजयत्
suitably honoured
विष्णो:-आराधन-अर्थाय
for Vishnu's propitiating purpose
स्व-पुत्रस्य-उदयाय च
own son's wellbeing and
For the purpose of propitiating Lord Vishnu and also for the wellbeing of his own son, the liberal minded Nanda, fulfilled all their desires and honoured them suitably.
रोहिणी च महाभागा नन्दगोपाभिनन्दिता ।
व्यचरद् दिव्यवास:स्रक्कण्ठाभरणभूषिता ॥१७॥
रोहिणी च महाभागा
Rohini and the highly blessed,
नन्द-गोप-अभिनन्दिता
by Nanda, the chief Gopa felicitated
व्यचरद् दिव्य-वास:-
roamed with divine clothes,
स्रक्-कण्ठ-आभरण-भूषिता
garland and necklace adorned
The highly blessed Rohini, was felicitated by the chief Gopa, Nanda, and roamed about adorned in divine clothes, garlands and necklaces.
तत आरभ्य नन्दस्य व्रज: सर्वसमृद्धिमान् ।
हरेर्निवासात्मगुणै रमाक्रीडमभून्नृप ॥१८॥
तत: आरभ्य नन्दस्य व्रज:
from then starting Nanda's Vraja
सर्व-समृद्धिमान्
was all prosperous
हरे:-निवास-आत्म-गुणै:
by Shree Hari's residence's inherent qualities
रमा-क्रीडम्-अभूत्-नृप
Rama's playground became, O King!
O King! From then on, Nanda's Vraja became all prosperous, and by the virtue of being the residence of Lord Shree Hari, with its inherent qualities, it became the play ground of Goddess Ramaa.
गोपान् गोकुलरक्षायां निरूप्य मथुरां गत: ।
नन्द: कंसस्य वार्षिक्यं करं दातुं कुरूद्वह ॥१९॥
गोपान् गोकुल-रक्षायाम्
the Gopas, inGokul's security
निरूप्य मथुराम् गत:
employing, to Mathura went
नन्द: कंसस्य वार्षिक्यम् करम्
Nanda, of Kansa, the yearly tax
दातुम् कुरूद्वह
to pay, O Scion of the Kurus!
O Scion of the Kurus! Nanda employed the Gopas in the security of Gokula, and went to Mathura to pay the annual tax to Kansa.
वसुदेव उपश्रुत्य भ्रातरं नन्दमागतम् ।
ज्ञात्वा दत्तकरं राज्ञे ययौ तदवमोचनम् ॥२०॥
वसुदेव उपश्रुत्य
Vasudeva hearing
भ्रातरम् नन्दम्-आगतम्
of brother Nanda's coming,
ज्ञात्वा दत्त-करम् राज्ञे
and knowing had given the tax to the king,
ययौ तत्-अवमोचनम्
went to his camp
Vasudeva heard that his brother Nanda had come, and also coming to know that he had paid the tax to the king, he went to him to his camp.
तं दृष्ट्वा सहसोत्थाय देह: प्राणमिवागतम् ।
प्रीत: प्रियतमं दोर्भ्यां सस्वजे प्रेमविह्वल: ॥२१॥
तम् दृष्ट्वा सहसा-उत्थाय
him seeing, suddenly got up,
देह: प्राणम्-इव-आगतम्
to a body, consciousness like returned
प्रीत: प्रियतमम् दोर्भ्याम् सस्वजे
delighted most beloved, with both arms embraced
प्रेम-विह्वल:
with affection overwhelmed
Delighted to see his most beloved friend, he suddenly got up just as (an unconscious) body would rise by the returning of the consciousness, and overwhelmed with affection embraced him with both the arms.
पूजित: सुखमासीन: पृष्ट्वानामयमादृत: ।
प्रसक्तधी: स्वात्मजयोरिदमाह विशाम्पते ॥२२॥
पूजित: सुखम्-आसीन:
welcomed, comfortably seated
पृष्ट्वा-अनामयम्-आदृत:
asked after his health, and honoured
प्रसक्त-धी: स्व-आत्मजयो:-
attached mind to own sons
इदम्-आह विशाम्पते
this said, O King!
O King! Vasudeva was welcomed, comfortably seated, was asked after his health and honoured by Nanda. His mind was attached to his own sons, and he said to Nanda,..
दिष्ट्याभ्रात: प्रवयसा इदानीमप्रजस्य ते ।
प्रजाशाया निवृत्तस्य प्रजा यत् समपद्यत ॥२३॥
दिष्ट्या-भ्रात: प्रवयसा
'By good luck, O Brother! beyond age,
इदानीम्-अप्रजस्य ते
now, issueless your
प्रजा-आशाया निवृत्तस्य
of issue's hope given up,
प्रजा यत् समपद्यत
issue in that, is begotten
"O Brother! It is by good luck, that you issue-less, and beyond age, and who have given up hope of having children, have now begotten children."
दिष्ट्या संसारचक्रेऽस्मिन् वर्तमान: पुनर्भव: ।
उपलब्धो भवानद्य दुर्लभं प्रियदर्शनम् ॥२४॥
दिष्ट्या संसारचक्रे-अस्मिन्
by good fortune, in the material whirligig this
वर्तमान: पुनर्भव:
is present rebirth
उपलब्ध: भवान्-अद्य
obtained your are today
दुर्लभम् प्रिय-दर्शनम्
rare is the beloveds' meeting
By good fortune, I have got to meet you today, which is like one reborn. For, in this material whirligig, the meeting of the beloved ones is very rare.
नैकत्र प्रियसंवास: सुहृदां चित्रकर्मणाम् ।
ओघेन व्यूह्यमानानां प्लवानां स्रोतसो यथा ॥२५॥
न-एकत्र प्रिय-संवास:
not at one place living
सुहृदाम् चित्र-कर्मणाम्
of friends, in various occupations
ओघेन व्यूह्यमानानाम्
by the current swept
प्लवनाम् स्रोतस: यथा
wooden twigs planks, flowing in the river, like
Due to various occupations, the living together of dear friends is not possible, just as the wooden planks and twigs swept in the flowing current of the river.
कच्चित् पशव्यं निरुजं भूर्यम्बुतृणवीरुधम् ।
बृहद्वनं तदधुना यत्रास्से त्वं सुहृद्वृत: ॥२६॥
कच्चित् पशव्यम् निरुजम्
is it, for the cattle the fodder, free from disease,
भूरि-अम्बु-तृण-वीरुधम्
enough water, grass, plants
बृहत्-वनम् तत्-अधुना
in Vrindaavana, that now
यत्र-आस्से त्वम् सुहृद्-वृत:
where live you by kith and kin surrounded
Is it that in Vrindaavana, there is enough of water, grass and plants, fodder free of disease, fit for cattle, where you reside now surrounded by your kith and kin.
भ्रातर्मम सुत: कच्चिन्मात्रा सह भवद्व्रजे ।
तातं भवन्तं मन्वानो भवद्भ्यामुपलालित: ॥२७॥
भ्रात:-मम सुत: कच्चित्-मात्रा
'O Brother mine! son is it mother
सह भवद्-व्रजे
with in your Vraja
तातम् भवन्तम् मन्वान:
father you understanding
भवद्भ्याम्-उपलालित:
by you both is nurtured
'O My brother! Is it that my son with his mother, who is in Vraja and understands you to be his father, and is nurtured and cherished by you both, is well?'
पुंसस्त्रिवर्गो विहित: सुहृदो ह्यनुभावित: ।
न तेषु क्लिश्यमानेषु त्रिवर्गोऽर्थाय कल्पते ॥२८॥
पुंस:-त्रि-वर्ग: विहित:
of the humans, the three pursuits recommended
सुहृद: हि-अनुभावित:
with kith and kin indeed shared with
न तेषु क्लिश्यमानेषु
not in them trouble creating
त्रि-वर्ग:-अर्थाय कल्पते
the three are for benefit
The three pursuits recommended for the human beings, if not shared with the kith and kins, when they are in trouble, the three do not bring any benefit to the human beings.
नन्द उवाच -
Nanda said -
अहो ते देवकीपुत्रा: कंसेन बहवो हता: ।
एकावशिष्टावरजा कन्या सापि दिवं गता ॥२९॥
अहो ते देवकी-पुत्रा:
Alas! your and Devaki's sons
कंसेन बहव: हता:
by Kansa many are killed
एका-अवशिष्टा-अवरजा कन्या
one left, the youngest daughter
सा-अपि दिवम् गता
she also ascended to heaven
Alas! Your's and Devaki's many sons have been killed by Kansa. One last daughter, the youngest, she also ascended to heaven.
नूनं ह्यदृष्टनिष्ठोऽयमदृष्टपरमो जन: ।
अदृष्टमात्मनस्तत्त्वं यो वेद न स मुह्यति ॥३०॥
नूनम् हि-अदृष्ट-निष्ठ:-
without a doubt, indeed, on destiny dependent
अयम्-अदृष्ट-परम: जन:
is this (being), by destiny is controlled a person
अदृष्टम्-आत्मन:-तत्त्वम्
destiny is the self, this truth
य: वेद न स: मुह्यति
who knows, not he is infatuated
Without a doubt, indeed a human being is dependent on destiny, and a person is controlled by destiny, he who knows destiny to be his own self, is not infatuated.
वसुदेव उवाच -
Vasudeva said -
करो वै वार्षिको दत्तो राज्ञे दृष्टा वयं च व: ।
नेह स्थेयं बहुतिथं सन्त्युत्पाताश्च गोकुले ॥३१॥
करो वै वार्षिक: दत्त: राज्ञे
tax actually annual is given to the king
दृष्टा वयम् च व:
are seen by us and you
न-इह स्थेयम् बहु-तिथं
not here should stay for long time
सन्ति-उत्पाता:-च गोकुले
are many incidents notorious and in Gokula
Actually, now that the annual tax has been paid to the king, and we have also met you, you should not stay here for long, as there are many unpleasant incidents in Gokula also.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इति नन्दादयो गोपा: प्रोक्तास्ते शौरिणा ययु: ।
अनोभिरनडुद्युक्तैस्तमनुज्ञाप्य गोकुलम् ॥३२॥
इति नन्द-आदय: गोपा:
thus Nanda and other Gopas
प्रोक्ता:-ते शौरिणा ययु:
told they, by Vasudeva, went
अनोभि:-अनडुद्-युक्तै:-
by bullocks carts attached
तम्-अनुज्ञाप्य गोकुलम्
him letting know to Gokula
Nanda and the other cowherds, thus told by Shauree, Vasudeva, taking leave of him, went away to Gokula riding on bullock carts.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमे स्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे नन्दवसुदेवसंगमो नाम पञ्चम: अध्याय: ॥५॥
Thus ends the fifth discourse entitled 'The meeting of Nanda and Vasudeva', in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
