श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
नन्द: पथि वच: शौरेर्न मृषेति विचिन्तयन् ।

हरिं जगाम शरणमुत्पातागमशङ्कित: ॥१॥


नन्द: पथि वच: शौरे:-
Nanda, on the way, words of Shauree,
न मृषा-इति विचिन्तयन्
not false are, thus pondering
हरिम् जगाम शरणम्-
to Lord Shree Hari went as refuge
उत्पात-आगम-शङ्कित:
of unpleasant incidents coming apprehensive

On the way, Nanda pondered that Vasudeva's words could not be false. And apprehensive of the coming of unpleasant incidents, he sought refuge in Shree Hari.


कंसेन प्रहिता घोरा पूतना बालघातिनी ।

शिशूंश्चचार निघ्नन्ती पुरग्रामब्रजादिषु ॥२॥


कंसेन प्रहिता घोरा
by Kansa sent, the terrible
पूतना बाल-घातिनी
Pootanaa, the child killer
शिशून्-चचार निघ्नन्ती
the children, went about killing
पुर-ग्राम-ब्रज-आदिषु
in towns villages, cowherd sheds, and others

The terrible child killer Pootanaa was sent by Kansa, who moved about the towns, villages, cowherd sheds and other dwellings killing infants.


न यत्र श्रवणादीनि रक्षोघ्नानि स्वकर्मसु ।

कुर्वन्ति सात्वतां भर्तुर्यातुधान्यश्च तत्र हि ॥३॥


न यत्र श्रवण-आदीनि
not where, listening to, and other
रक्ष:-घ्नानि स्व-कर्मसु
the demons' killing in own activities
कुर्वन्ति सात्वताम् भर्तु:-
do, of the devotees the Protector
यातुधान्य:-च तत्र हि
ogresses and there indeed are

Where, the names of the devotees Protector, Vishnu, are not remembered and are not chanted, in the daily activities, which are demon killers, there indeed the ogresses are.


सा खेचर्येकदोपेत्य पूतना नन्दगोकुलम् ।

योषित्वा माययाऽऽत्मानं प्राविशत् कामचारिणी ॥४॥


सा खेचरी-एकदा-उपेत्य
she, in the sky coursing, once approached,
पूतना नन्द-गोकुलम्
Pootanaa, Nanda's Gokula
योषित्वा मायया-आत्मानम्
in woman form, by witchcraft self
प्राविशत् काम-चारिणी
entered, at will taking forms

Once, Pootanaa, coursing in the sky, taking on forms at will by her witchcraft, in the form of her self as a woman, approached Nanda's Gokula.


तां केशबन्धव्यतिषक्तमल्लिकां बृहन्नितम्बस्तनकृच्छ्रमध्यमाम् ।

सुवाससं कम्पितकर्णभूषणत्विषोल्लसत्कुन्तलमण्डिताननाम् ॥५॥


ताम् केश-बन्ध-
her, in the hair braids
व्यतिषक्त-मल्लिकाम्
entwined jasmine flowers
बृहत्-नितम्ब-स्तन
with bulky hips and breasts
कृच्छ्र-मध्यमाम्
and slender waisted,
सु-वाससम्
well dressed
कम्पित-कर्ण-भूषण-
swinging ear ornaments'
त्विषा-उल्लसत्-
brilliance shining with
कुन्तल-मण्डित-आननाम्
curly hair, set off her face

She had jasmine flowers entwined in her hair braids, had bulky hips and breasts and a slender waist. She was well dressed, and her shining swinging ear-rings, made her curly hair radiant which set off her face.


वल्गुस्मितापाङ्गविसर्गवीक्षितैर्मनो हरन्तीं वनितां व्रजौकसाम् ।

अमंसताम्भोजकरेण रूपिणीं गोप्य: श्रियं द्रष्टुमिवागतां पतिम् ॥६॥


वल्गु-स्मित-
with sweet smile
आपाङ्ग-विसर्ग-वीक्षितै:-
sidelong casting glances
मन: हरन्तीम्
minds captivating
वनिताम् व्रजौकसाम्
to the women of Vraja residing
अमंसत-अम्भोज-करेण
seemed by the lotus in hand
रूपिणीम् गोप्य:
the lovely, the Gopis
श्रियम् द्रष्टुम्-
Laxmi to see
इव-आगताम् पतिम्
as if had come husband

She, with her sweet smile, casting sidelong glances, captivated the minds of the women residing in Vraja, and with a lotus in her hand, she seemed to the Gopis as if Laxmi herself had come to meet her husband.


बालग्रहस्तत्र विचिन्वती शिशून् यदृच्छया नन्दगृहेऽसदन्तकम् ।

बालं प्रतिच्छन्ननिजोरुतेजसं ददर्श तल्पेऽग्निमिवाहितं भसि ॥७॥

of children The Death, there,
विचिन्वती शिशून् यदृच्छया
looking around for infants, by Providence
नन्द-गृहे-असत्-अन्तकम्
in Nanda's house, The Destroyer
बालम् प्रतिच्छन्न-
the infant covered
निज-उरु-तेजसम्
by own great glory
ददर्श तल्पे-
saw on the bed
अग्निम्-इव-आहितम् भसि
fire like buried in ashes

She, The Death of the children, went about looking there for infants. By Providence, in the house of Nanda, she saw on the bed, an infant, The Destroyer of the wicked, covered by his own glory, like the fire buried in ashes.


विबुध्य तां बालकमारिकाग्रहं चराचरात्माऽऽस निमीलितेक्षण: ।

अनन्तमारोपयदङ्कमन्तकं यथोरगं सुप्तमबुद्धिरज्जुधी: ॥८॥


विबुध्य ताम्

चर-अचर-आत्मा-
of the mobile and immobile The Soul
आस निमीलित-ईक्षण:
remained with closed eyes
अनन्तम्-आरोपयत्-
The Eternal, placed
अङ्कम्-अन्तकम्
on the lap, The Destroyer
यथा-उरगम् सुप्तम्-
just as a snake sleeping
अबुद्धि-रज्जु-धी:
a foolish (person), as a rope mistaking

Recognizing her to be the child killer evil spirit, The Soul of the mobile and the immobile, (Krishna), remained with closed eyes. She placed on her lap, The Infinite Lord, her very Destroyer, just as a foolish person may take a sleeping snake mistaking it to be a rope.


तां तीक्ष्णचित्तामतिवामचेष्टितां वीक्ष्यान्तरा कोशपरिच्छदासिवत् ।

वरस्त्रियं तत्प्रभया च धर्षिते निरीक्षमाणे जननी ह्यतिष्ठताम् ॥९॥


ताम् तीक्ष्ण-चित्ताम्-
her, the sharp minded
अति-वाम-चेष्टिताम्
of very sweet behaviour
वीक्ष्य़-अन्तरा
seeing, inside,
कोश-परिच्छद-असि-वत्
in scabbard hidden sword like
वर-स्त्रियम् तत्-प्रभया
the excellent woman, by her splendour
च धर्षिते निरीक्षमाणे
and over-whelmed watching,
जननी हि-अतिष्ठताम्
the mothers, just looked on

Seeing the excellent woman, with a sharp mind but very sweet behaviour, inside the house, like a sword hidden in the scabbard, the two mothers, Rohini and Yashodaa, over-whelmed by her splendour, just looked on.


तस्मिन् स्तनं दुर्जरवीर्यमुल्बणं घोराङ्कमादाय शिशोर्ददावथ ।

गाढं कराभ्यां भगवान् प्रपीड्य तत् प्राणै: समं रोषसम्न्वितोऽपिबत् ॥१०॥


तस्मिन् स्तनम्
in his, the breast
दुर्जर-वीर्यम्-उल्बणम्
dreadful, deadly poison
घोर-अङ्कम्-आदाय
terrible, in the lap taking
शिशो:-ददौ-अथ
to the child gave then
गाढम् कराभ्याम्
hard with the hands
भगवान् प्रपीड्य
The Lord squeezed
तत् प्राणै: समम्
her life along with
रोष-सम्न्वित:-अपिबत्
with indignation sucked

She took the child in her lap and gave her dreadful breast smeared with terrible deadly poison into his mouth. The Lord squeezed the breast hard with both his hands and with indignation sucked her life along with the poison.


सा मुञ्च मुञ्चालमिति प्रभाषिणी निष्पीड्यमानाखिलजीवमर्मणी ।

विवृत्य नेत्रे चरणौ भुजौ मुहु: प्रस्विन्नगात्रा क्षिपती रुरोद ह ॥११॥


सा मुञ्च मुञ्च-अलम्-इति
she, 'Leave, leave!, enough' thus
प्रभाषिणी निष्पीड्यमाना-
saying, wrenched
अखिल-जीव-मर्मणी
of all vital parts
विवृत्य नेत्रे
with distended eyes,
चरणौ भुजौ मुहु:
feet and arms again and again
प्रस्विन्न-गात्रा
drenched in sweat the body
क्षिपती रुरोद ह
tossing about screamed in fact

She cried, 'Leave, leave! Enough of it!' With all her vital parts of the body wrenched, her eyes distended, tossing about her feet and arms again and again, her body drenched in perspiration, she in fact screamed.


तस्या: स्वनेनातिगभीररंहसा साद्रिर्मही द्यौश्च चचाल सग्रहा ।

रसा दिशश्च प्रतिनेदिरे जना: पेतु: क्षितौ वज्रनिपातशङ्कया ॥१२॥


तस्या: स्वनेन-अति-गभीर-
by her violent sound the very deep
रंहसा साद्रि:-मही
roar, with the mountains the earth
धौ:-च चचाल सग्रहा:
the heavens shook with the planets
रसा दिश:-च प्रतिनेदिरे
the subterranean worlds and directions echoed
जना: पेतु: क्षितौ
people fell on the ground
वज्र-निपात-शङ्कया
thunderbolt apprehending

By her very deep roar and violent sound, the earth with the mountains trembled, and the heavens with the planets shook. The subterranean worlds and the directions echoed, and the people fell on the ground apprehending a thunderbolt.


निशाचरीत्थं व्यथितस्तना व्यसुर्व्यादाय केशांस्चरणौ भुजावपि ।

प्रसार्य गोष्ठे निजरूपमास्थिता वज्राहतो वृत्र इवापतन्नृप ॥१३॥


निशाचरी-इत्थम्
the demoness, in this manner
व्यथित-स्तना व्यसु:-व्यादाय
tormented in the breasts, life giving up
केशान्-चरणौ भुजौ-अपि
the hair, legs, arms also
प्रसार्य गोष्ठे
spreading out in the courtyard
निज-रूपम्-आस्थिता
in own (demonic) form reverted
वज्र-आहत: वृत्र इव-
by thunderbolt hit Vritraasura like
आपतत्-नृप
fell, O King!

O King! The demoness thus tormented in the breast, gave up her life, reverted to her own demonic form and fell dead in the courtyard with her hair, legs and arms stretched out, like Vritraasura hit by the thunderbolt.


पतमानोऽपि तद्देहस्त्रिगव्यूत्यन्तरद्रुमान् ।

चूर्णयामास राजेन्द्र महदासीत्तदद्भुतम् ॥१४॥


पतमान:-अपि तत्-देह
when falling even, that body
त्रि-गव्यूति-अन्तर-द्रुमान्
twelve miles within trees
चूर्णयामास राजेन्द्र
crushed, O King!
महत्-आसीत्-तत्-अद्भुतम्
great was that wonder

O King! Even as her body fell, it crushed the trees within twelve miles, which was a great wonder.


ईषामात्रोग्रदंष्ट्रास्यं गिरिकन्दरनासिकम् ।

गण्डशैलस्तनं रौद्रं प्रकीर्णारुणमूर्धजम् ॥१५॥


ईषा-मात्र-उग्र-दंष्ट्र-आस्यम्
plough like, fearful toothed face
गिरि-कन्दर-नासिकम्
mountain caves (like) nostrils
गण्ड-शैल-स्तनम् रौद्रम्
rocks of mountains (like) breasts fierce
प्रकीर्णा:-अरुण-मूर्धजम्
scattered coppered hair

The body had plough like fearful toothed face, mountain caves like nostrils, rocks of mountains like fierce breasts, and copper like hair, scattered.


अन्धकूपगभीराक्षं पुलिनारोहभीषणम् ।

बद्धसेतुभुजोर्वङ्घ्रि शून्यतोयह्रदोदरम् ।।१६॥


अन्ध-कूप-गभीर-आक्षम्
dark well (like) deep eyes
पुलिन-आरोह भीषणम्
sand banks (like) hips terrible
बद्ध-सेतु भुज-उरु-अङ्घ्रि
bridges (like) arms, thighs, legs
शून्य-तोय-ह्रद-उदरम्
without water lake (like) belly

Its eyes were like a deep dark well, the hips were like sand banks, the arms thighs and legs were like bridges, and the belly was like a lake without water.


सन्तत्रसु: स्म तद् वीक्ष्य गोपा गोप्य: कलेवरम् ।

पूर्वं तु तन्नि:स्वनितभिन्नहृत्कर्णमस्तका: ॥१७॥


सन्तत्रसु: स्म तद् वीक्ष्य
very much afraid were that seeing,
गोपा: गोप्य: कलेवरम्
the Gopas, and Gopis, body
पूर्वम् तु तत्-नि:स्वनित-
before only, its yell had
भिन्न-हृत्-कर्ण-मस्तका:
split (their) hearts, ears and minds

Seeing that body the Gopas and Gopis were very much afraid, hearing the yell of which, their hearts ears and minds had already split.


बालं च तस्या उरसि क्रीडन्तमकुतोभयम् ।

गोप्यस्तूर्णं समभ्येत्य जगृहुर्जातसम्भ्रमा: ॥१८॥


बालम् च तस्या: उरसि
the child and on her chest
क्रीडन्तम्-अकुत:-भयम्
playing without fear
गोप्य:-तूर्णम् समभ्येत्य
the Gopis in haste approached and
जगृहु:-जात-सम्भ्रमा:
picked Him, becoming alarmed

Finding the child fearlessly playing on her chest, the very much alarmed Gopis went in haste and picked Him up.


यशोदारोहिणीभ्यां ता: समं बालस्य सर्वत: ।

रक्षां विदधिरे सम्यग्गोपुच्छभ्रमणादिभि: ॥१९॥


यशोदा-रोहिणीभ्यां ता:
Yashodaa and Rohinee, they
समम् बालस्य सर्वत:
properly, of the child from all sides
रक्षाम् विदधिरे सम्यक्-
protection ensures well
गो-पुच्छ-भ्रमण-आदिभि:
by cow's tail waving around and other (rites)

They, the Gopis, along with Yashodaa and Rohini, ensured the child's protection on all sides, by the waving around of the cow's tail and other occult rites.


गोमूत्रेण स्नापयित्वा पुनर्गोरजसार्भकम् ।

रक्षां चक्रुश्च शकृता द्वादशाङ्गेषु नामभि: ॥२०॥


गोमूत्रेण स्नापयित्वा
by cow urine bathed
पुन:-गो-रजसा-अर्भकम्
again by cow's dust, the child
रक्षाम् चक्रु:-च शकृता
protection performed and by cow dung
द्वादश-अङ्गेषु नामभि:
on twelve limbs (smeared) with (Lord's) names

They bathed the child with cow urine, and sprinkled the dust of cow's hoof for further protection, and smeared His twelve limbs with cow dung, and simultaneously chanted The Lord's twelve names.


गोप्य: संस्पृष्टसलिला अङ्गेषु करयो: पृथक् ।

न्यस्यात्मन्यथ बालस्य बीजन्यासमकुर्वत ॥२१॥


गोप्य: संस्पृष्ट-सलिला:
the Gopis touching the water
अङ्गेषु करयो: पृथक्
in the limbs by the arms diverse
न्यस्य-आत्मनि-अथ बालस्य
placing on self, then of the child
बीज-न्यासम्-अकुर्वत
seed (twelve names of the Lord) did

The Gopis touched the water, and placing it on the diverse limbs of themselves, then placed it on the limbs of the child, as they uttered the twelve seed names of The Lord.


अव्यादजोऽङ्घ्रिमणिमांस्तव जान्वथोरू

यज्ञोऽच्युत: कटितटं जठरं हयास्य: ।

हृत् केशवस्त्वदुर ईश इनस्तु कण्ठं

विष्णुर्भुजं मुखमुरुक्रम ईश्वर: कम् ॥२२॥


अव्यात्-अज:-अङ्घ्रि-
may protect, The Birthless, the feet
मणिमान्-तव
Manimaana, your
जानु-अथ-ऊरू यज्ञ:-
knees then thighs Yagya,
अच्युत: कटि-तटम्
Achyuta, (The Immortal) the lions,
जठरम् हय-आस्य:
the abdomen, Hayagreeva (The Horse headed)
हृत् केशव:-
the heart Keshava,
त्वत्-उर: ईश
your bosom Isha (The Almighty)
इन:-तु कण्ठम्
Ina, (The Master) the throat
विष्णु:-भुजम्
Vishnu (The All-pervading) the arms
मुखम्-उरुक्रम:
the mouth, Urukrama (The One with long strides)
ईश्वर: कम्
Ishvara, (The Supreme Lord) the head

May Aja, The Birthless protect your feet, Manimaana, The Lord with the Kaustubha jewel, your knees, then, Yagya, The Lord presiding over sacrifices, the thighs, Achyuta, The Immortal Lord, the lions, Hayagreeva, The Horse-headed Lord the abdomen, Keshava the heart, your bosom, Isha The Almighty, The Master Ina, the throat, The All-Pervading Vishnu the arms, The One with long strides, Urukrama, the mouth and The Supreme Lord Ishvara the head.


चक्र्यग्रत: सहगदो हरिरस्तु पश्चात्

त्वत्पार्श्वयोर्धनुरसी मधुहाजनश्च ।

कोणेषु शङ्ख उरुगाय उपर्युपेन्द्रस्तार्क्ष्य:

क्षितौ हलधर: पुरुष: समन्तात् ॥२३॥


चक्री-अग्रत: सह-गद:
The discuss wielder, be in front, with the mace,
हरि:-अस्तु पश्चात्
Shree Hari may be behind,
त्वत्-पार्श्वयो:-
on your both sides
धनु:-असी मधुहा-
bow and sword wielding Madhuhaa,
अजन:-च कोणेषु
The Birthless and in the four direction corners
शङ्ख: उरुगाय:
the conch sung by many
उपरि-उपेन्द्र:-
overhead, Upendra
तार्क्ष्य: क्षितौ
Gaduda on the ground,
हलधर: पुरुष: समन्तात्
The plough wielder, Supreme Person, all-around

May The discuss wielder be in front, with the mace, may Shree Hari be behind, may the bow and sword wielding Madhuhaa be on both your sides, may the well sung of conch holding The Birthless be in the four directions, may Upendra be overhead, may Gaduda be on the ground and The plough-wielder Supreme Person on all sides.


इन्द्रियाणि हृषीकेश: प्राणान् नारायणोऽवतु ।

श्वेतद्वीपपतिश्चित्तं मनो योगेश्वरोऽवतु ॥२४॥


इन्द्रियाणि हृषीकेश:
the Indriyas, Hrishikesha
प्राणान् नारायण:-अवतु
the vital airs, Naaraayana may protect
श्वेत-द्वीप-पति:-चित्तम्
the white island Lord, the intellect
मन: योगेश्वर:-अवतु
mind, Yogeshvara may protect

May Hrishikesha protect your Indriyas, and Naaraayana your vital airs, may The Lord of the white island, Vaasudeva, protect your intellect and Yogeshvara, Aniruddha, your mind.


पृश्निगर्भस्तु ते बुद्धिमात्मानं भगवान् पर: ।

क्रीडन्तं पातु गोविन्द: शयानं पातु भाधव: ॥२५॥


पृश्निगर्भ:-तु ते बुद्धिम्-
Prishnigarbha indeed, your intellect
आत्मानम् भगवान् पर:
Ahankaara (ego) Lord Supreme
क्रीडन्तम् पातु गोविन्द:
while playing may protect Govinda
शयानम् पातु भाधव:
when sleeping may protect Maadhava

May Prishnigarbha protect Your intellect, and The Lord Supreme your ego. May Govinda save You when You are at play and may Maadhava save You when You are asleep.


व्रजन्तमव्याद् वैकुण्ठ आसीनं त्वां श्रिय: पति: ।

भुञ्जानं यज्ञभुक् पातु सर्वग्रहभयङ्कर: ॥२६॥


व्रजन्तम्-अव्यात् वैकुण्ठ:
while walking may protect Vaikuntha,
आसीनम् त्वाम् श्रिय: पति:
while seated You, Lord of Shree,
भुञ्जानम् यज्ञभुक् पातु
when eating The Yagya enjoyer may save
सर्वग्रह भयङ्कर:
of all evil spirits the terror

Vaikuntha may protect You when you walk, and Lord of Shree when You are seated. The Enjoyer of the sacrifices, the terror of all evil spirits, may save You when you eat.


डाकिन्यो यातुधान्यश्च कूष्माण्डा येऽर्भकग्रहा: ।

भूतप्रेतपिशाचाश्च यक्षरक्षोविनायका: ॥ २७॥


डाकिन्य: यातुधान्य:-च
Daakinis, Yaatudhaanis, and
कूष्माण्डा ये-अर्भक-ग्रहा:
Kushmaandas, which are baby evil spirits,
भूत-प्रेत-पिशाचा:-च
Bhutas, Pretas, Pishaachas, and
यक्ष-रक्ष:-विनायका:
Yakshas, Raakshasha's, Vinaayakas

Daakinis, Yaatudhaanis, and Kushmaandas, which are baby evil spirits, Bhutas, Pretas, Pishaachas, and Yakshas, Raakshasha's, Vinaayakas,….


कोटरा रेवती ज्येष्ठा पूतना मातृकादय: ।

उन्मादा ये ह्यपस्मारा देहप्राणेन्द्रियद्रुह: ॥२८॥


कोटरा रेवती ज्येष्ठा
Kotaraa, Revatee, Jyeshthaa,
पूतना मातृकादय:
Pootanaa, Maatrikaa and others,
उन्मादा ये ह्यपस्मारा
insanity those, indeed apoplexies
देह-प्राण-इन्द्रिय-द्रुह:
of body, the vital system, senses interfere with

Kotaraa, Revatee, Jyeshthaa, Pootanaa, Maatrikaa and others, insanity and apoplexies inducing spirits which interfere with the functions of the body, senses and vital systems.


स्वप्नदृष्टा महोत्पाता वृद्धबालग्रहाश्च ये ।

सर्वे नश्यन्तु ते विष्णोर्नामग्रहणभीरव: ॥२९॥


स्वप्न-दृष्टा महोत्पाता:
in dream seen nightmares
वृद्ध-बाल-ग्रहा:-च ये
of old, young, the evil and which
सर्वे नश्यन्तु ते
all may be destroyed those
विष्णो:-नाम ग्रहण-भीरव:
by Vishnu's name taking terrified

The nightmares seen in the dream, the evil spirits of the old and the young, all of those evil spirits may be destroyed which are terrified by taking the name of Vishnu.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इति प्रणयबद्धाभिर्गोपीभि: कृतरक्षणम् ।

पाययित्वा स्तनं माता संन्यवेशयदात्मजम् ॥३०॥


इति प्रणय-बद्धाभि:-
thus by the affection bound
गोपीभि: कृत-रक्षणम्
Gopis ensured security
पाययित्वा स्तनम् माता
suckled the breasts, the mother
संन्यवेशयत्-आत्मजम्
put to sleep the son

Thus, when by affection bound the Gopis had ensured the child's security, the mother suckled the breasts to her Son, and put Him to sleep.


तावन्नन्दादयो गोपा मथुराया व्रजं गता: ।

विलोक्य पूतनादेहं बभूवुरतिविस्मिता: ॥३१॥


तावत्-नन्द-आदय: गोपा:
Meanwhile, Nanda and other Gopas
मथुराया व्रजम् गता:
from Mathuraa to Vraja went
विलोक्य पूतना-देहम्
seeing Pootana's body
बभूवु:-अति-विस्मिता:
became very surprised

In the meanwhile, Nanda and the other Gopas had returned to Vraja from Mathura. On seeing the huge body of Pootanaa, they became very much surprised.


नूनं बतर्षि संजातो योगेशो वा समास स: ।

स एव दृष्टो ह्युत्पातो यदाहानकदुन्दुभि: ॥३२॥


नूनम् बत-ऋषि: संजात:
surely indeed a sage is born,
योगेश: वा समास स:
a master of Yoga, or was formerly, he
स: एव दृष्ट: हि-उत्पात:
he only foresaw certainly the calamity
यत्-आह-आनकदुन्दुभि:
of which said Aanakadundubhi

Surely, indeed he, Vasudeva, is a sage born, or he was formerly a master of Yoga, because he only foresaw the calamity which he, (Aanakadundubhi) had spoken of.


कलेवरं परशुभिश्छित्त्वा तत्ते व्रजौकस: ।

दूरे क्षिप्त्वावयवशो न्यदहन् काष्ठधिष्ठितम् ॥३३॥


कलेवरम् परशुभि:-छित्त्वा
the body by axes cutting,
तत्-ते व्रजौकस:
that, they the Vraja inhabitants
दूरे क्षिप्त्वा-अवयवश:
far away threw the parts
न्यदहन् काष्ठ-धिष्ठितम्
burnt them with wood piled over

The residents of Vraja, cut off the body into parts with axes and threw them far away and burnt them with woods piled over.


दह्यमानस्य देहस्य धूमश्चागुरुसौरभ: ।

उत्थित: कृष्णनिर्भुक्तसपद्याहतपाप्मन: ॥३४॥


दह्यमानस्य देहस्य
when burning the body
धूम:-च-अगुरु-सौरभ:
smoke and of Aguru fragrance (of Aloe-wood)
उत्थित: कृष्ण-निर्भुक्त-
emitted, by Krishna sucked
सपदि-आहत-पाप्मन:
instantly, were struck away the sins

As the body was burning, the smoke emitted the fragrance of Agaru, the smell of Aloe-wood. It having been sucked by Krishna, all the sins of the body were instantly struck away.


पूतना लोकबालघ्नी राक्षसी रुधिराशना ।

जिघांसयापि हरये स्तनं दत्त्वाऽऽप सद्गतिम् ॥३५॥


पूतना लोक-बालघ्नी
Pootanaa, the peoples' child killer,
राक्षसी रुधिर-अशना
ogress, blood sucking
जिघांसया-अपि हरये
with the intention of killing also, to Shree Hari
स्तनम् दत्त्वा-आप सद्गतिम्
breast giving, attained saint-hood

Pootanaa, the peoples' child-killer, the blood sucking ogress, even though having the intention of killing Him, attained saint-hood, by giving Shree Hari her breast to suck.


किं पुन: श्रद्धया भक्त्या कृष्णाय परमात्मने ।

यच्छन् प्रियतमं किं नु रक्तास्तन्मातरो यथा ॥३६॥


किं पुन: श्रद्धया भक्त्या
what again, with reverence and devotion
कृष्णाय परमात्मने
to Krishna The Supreme Spirit
यच्छन् प्रियतमम् किम् नु
giving the most coveted, what indeed
रक्ता:-तत्-मातर: यथा
affectionate, His mothers like

Then what to say of the state which may be attained by giving one's most coveted something with reverence and devotion to Shree Krishna, The Supreme Spirit, indeed, like his affectionate mothers did?


पदभ्यां भक्तहृदिस्थाभ्यां वन्द्याभ्यां लोकवन्दित: ।

अङ्गं यस्या: समाक्रम्य भगवानपिबत् स्तनम् ॥३७॥


पदभ्याम् भक्त-हृदि-स्थाभ्याम्
by feet, in devotees heart placed
वन्द्याभ्याम् लोक-वन्दित:
worthy of worship by world's adored and others
अङ्गम् यस्या: समाक्रम्य
body whose getting up on
भगवान्-अपिबत् स्तनम्
The Lord sucked the breast

In that, that The Lord with His feet, which are enshrined in the hearts of the devotees and are worthy of worship by the world's adored Brahmaa and others, getting up on whose body, sucked the breast.


यातुधान्यपि सा स्वर्गमवाप जननीगतिम् ।

कृष्णभुक्तस्तनक्षीरा: किमु गावो नु मातर: ॥३८॥


यातुधानी-अपि सा स्वर्गम्-
ogress though, she, heaven
अवाप जननी-गतिम्
attained a mother's state
कृष्ण-भुक्त:-स्तन-क्षीरा:
by Krishna drunk breasts' milk
किमु गाव: नु मातर:
what of the cows indeed the mothers

Even though an ogress, she attained the state of a mother and the heaven, what then of the cows and the mothers, whose breast milk Krishna had sucked.


पयांसि यासामपिबत् पुत्रस्नेहस्नुतान्यलम् ।

भगवान् देवकीपुत्र: कैवल्याद्याखिलप्रद: ॥३९॥


पयांसि यासाम्-अपिबत्
milk whose sucked
पुत्र-स्नेह-स्नुतानि-अलम्
by son's affection oozing, not enough
भगवान् देवकी-पुत्र:
The Lord, Devaki's son
कैवल्य-आदि-अखिल-प्रद:
liberation and other everything Bestower

The Lord, Devaki's son, The Bestower of liberation, other boons, and everything, sucked not enough of the milk of whose breasts which oozed in son's affection.


तासामविरतं कृष्णे कुर्वतीनां सुतेक्षणम् ।

न पुन: कल्पते राजन् संसारोऽज्ञानसम्भव: ॥४०॥


तासाम्-अविरतम् कृष्णे
their incessantly, in Krishna
कुर्वतीनाम् सुत-ईक्षणम्
placing son's desire
न पुन: कल्पते राजन्
not again is possible, O King!
संसार:-अज्ञान-सम्भव:
rebirth, of ignorance the result

O King! By their incessantly looking at, and having a desire for Krishna as their son, for them, the possibility of rebirth is not at all there, which is the result of ignorance.


कटधूमस्य सौरभ्यमवधाय व्रजौकस: ।

किमिदं कुत एवेति वदन्तो व्रजमाययु: ॥४१॥


कट-धूमस्य सौरभ्यम्-
of the cremation the smoke fragrance
अवधाय व्रजौकस:
smelling, the Vraja residents
किम्-इदम् कुत: एव-एति
what is this, from where does it come
वदन्त: व्रजम्-आययु:
remarking to Vraja came

The residents of Vraja, Nanda and others, smelled the fragrance of the smoke emitted from the cremation, and remarked, 'What is this? From where does it come?' as they came to Vraja.


ते तत्र वर्णितं गोपै: पूतनागमनादिकम् ।

श्रुत्वा तन्निधनं स्वस्ति शिशोश्चासन् सुविस्मिता: ॥४२॥


ते तत्र वर्णितम् गोपै:
they, there described, by the cowherd's men,
पूतना-आगमन-आदिकम्
Pootana's coming and all
श्रुत्वा तत्-निधनम्
hearing of her death
स्वस्ति शिशो:-
well-being of the child
च-आसन् सुविस्मिता:
and remained very amazed

There, they heard the description of Pootana's coming and all that, by the cowherds men, and also hearing of her death and the well-being of the child, they remained very much amazed.


नन्द: स्वपुत्रमादाय प्रेत्यागतमुदारधी: ।

मूर्ध्न्युपाघ्राय परमां मुदं लेभे कुरूद्वह ॥४३॥


नन्द: स्व-पुत्रम्-आदाय
Nanda, own son taking up,
प्रेत्य-आगतम्-उदार-धी:
from death returned, the noble-minded
मूर्ध्नि-उपाघ्राय
on His crown smelling
परमाम् मुदम् लेभे
great delight experienced
कुरूद्वह
O Scion of the Kurus!

O Scion of the Kurus! The noble-minded Nanda, took up His own son, who had returned from the jaws of death, smelled His crown and experienced great joy.


य एतत् पूतनामोक्षं कृष्णस्यार्भकमद्भुतम् ।

शृणुयाच्छ्रद्धया मर्त्यो गोविन्दे लभते रतिम् ॥४४॥


य: एतत् पूतना-मोक्षम्
one who, this Pootana's liberation
कृष्णस्य-अर्भकम्-अद्भुतम्
Krishna's childlike sport, strange
शृणुयात्-श्रद्धया मर्त्य:
hears with reverence a mortal,
गोविन्दे लभते रतिम्
in Govinda attains love

A mortal who hears with reverence, this strange childlike sport of Krishna, of the liberation of Pootanaa, acquires love for Govinda.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमे स्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे पूतनामोक्षं नाम षष्ठ: अध्याय: ॥६॥


Thus ends the sixth discourse in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
