राजा-उवाच -
The King said -
येन येनावतारेण भगवान् हरिरीश्वर: ।

करोति कर्णरम्याणि मनोज्ञानि च न: प्रभो ॥१॥


येन येन-अवतारेण
in those all descents
भगवान् हरि:-ईश्वर:
The Lord Shree Hari The Almighty
करोति कर्ण-रम्याणि
performs (deeds) to the ear pleasing
मनोज्ञानि च न: प्रभो
to the mind appealing and to us, O Master!

O Master! All those deeds that Lord Shree Hari, The Almighty performs in His various descents are pleasing to hear to our ears and appealing to our minds.


यच्छृण्वतोऽपैत्यरतिर्वितृष्णा सत्त्वं च शुद्ध्यत्यचिरेण पुंस: ।

भक्तिर्हरौ तत्पुरुषे च सख्यं तदेव हारं वद मन्यसे चेत् ॥२॥


यत्-शृण्वत:-अपैति-अरति:-
which listening to, goes away disinterest,
वितृष्णा सत्त्वम् च शुद्ध्यति-
cravings, mind and is purified
अचिरेण पुंस:
soon of man
भक्ति:-हरौ तत्-पुरुषे
devotion to Shree Hari, to His devotees
च सख्यम् तत्-एव
and friendship, that only
हारम् वद मन्यसे चेत्
story do tell, find fit if

If you find it fit, do tell that story alone, listening to which, goes away disinterest in His stories, and cravings for sense pursuits, soon the mind of a person is purified, devotion to Shree Hari develops, and friendship is generated with His devotees.


अथान्यदपि कृष्णस्य तोकाचरितमद्भुतम् ।

मानुषं लोकमासाद्य तज्जातिमनुरुन्धत: ॥३॥


अथ-अन्यत्-अपि कृष्णस्य
then, others also Krishna's
तोक-आचरितम्-अद्भुतम्
childhood sports wonderful
मानुषम् लोकम्-आसाद्य
in the mortal world descending
तत्-जातिम्-अनुरुन्धत:
its race followed

Then, relate the other childhood wonderful sports also of Shri Krishna, who followed the ways of the human race when He descended into the mortal world.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
कदाचिदौत्थानिककौतुकाप्लवे जन्मर्क्षयोगे समवेतयोषिताम् ।

वादित्रगीतद्विजमन्त्रवाचकैश्चकार सूनोरभिषेचनं सती ॥४॥


कदाचित्-औत्थानिक-
once, of turning in bed
कौतुक-आप्लवे
occasion ceremony
जन्म-ऋक्ष-योगे
in the birth sign's ascent
समवेत-योषिताम्
with the getting together of the ladies
वादित्र-गीत-
of musical instruments and songs
द्विज-मन्त्र-वाचकै:-
by the Braahmanas Mantra were chanted
चकार सूनो:-
performed of the son
अभिषेचनम् सती
sprinkling of water the noble lady (Yashoda)

Once, during the celebration of the occasion of the child's turning in bed, at the time of the ascent of His birth sign, the ladies got together, the musical instruments were sounded, songs were sung, the Braahmanas chanted the Mantras, the noble lady Yashoda performed the ritual of the sprinkling of water on her son.


नन्दस्य पत्नी कृतमज्जनादिकं विप्रै: कृतस्वस्त्ययनं सुपूजितै: ।

अन्नाद्यवास: स्रगभीष्टधेनुभि: संजात निद्राक्षमशीशयच्छनै: ॥५॥


नन्दस्य पत्नी
Nanda's wife
कृत-मज्जन-आदिकम्
having done the bathing and other things
विप्रै: कृत-स्वस्त्ययनम्
by the Braahmanas done the well-ness chanting
सुपूजितै:
who were well-worshipped
अन्नाद्य-वास:
with food and raiments
स्रक्-अभीष्ट-धेनुभि:
garlands, the desired (objects) cows
संजात निद्रा-अक्षम्-
coming of sleep in the eyes
अशीशयत-शनै:
made to sleep gently

Nanda's wife having bathed the child and taken care of His other things, the well-being of the child was chanted by the well worshipped Braahmanas, she gifted them their desired objects, food and raiments, and cows. Seeing the sleep coming in the eyes of the child, she gently put Him to sleep in the bed.


औत्थानिकौत्सुक्यमना मनस्विनी समागतान् पूजयती व्रजौकस: ।

नैवाशृणोद् वै रुदितं सुतस्य सा रुदन् स्तनार्थीं चरणावुदक्षिपत् ॥६॥


औत्थानिक-
of the changing of side celebration
औत्सुक्य-मना
anxious minded
मनस्विनी समागतान्
the noble minded, the assembled
पूजयती व्रजौकस:
honouring the Vraja residents
न-एव-अशृणोत् वै
did not even hear indeed
रुदितम् सुतस्य
the cry of the son
रुदन् स्तन-अर्थीम्
crying for breast suck
चरणौ-उदक्षिपत्
the two feet flung up

The noble minded lady Yashoda was anxious at heart during the celebration of the event of side changing of the child, and was busy honouring the assembled residents of Vraja. She did not hear the cry of the son who was crying in demand for a suck of the breast and flung up His two feet.


अध: शयानस्य शिशोरनोऽल्पकप्रवालमृद्वङ्घ्रिहतं व्यवर्तत ।

विध्वस्तनानारसकुप्यभाजनं व्यत्यस्तचक्राक्षविभिन्नकूबरम् ॥७॥


अध: शयानस्य शिशो:-

the cart huge
प्रवाल-मृदु-अङ्घ्रि-
by tender leaf like dainty feet
हतम् व्यवर्तत
hit, turned upside down
विध्वस्त-नाना-
crushed various
रस-कुप्य-भाजनम्
juice pitchers and containers
व्यत्यस्त-चक्र-अक्ष
shattered the wheels axis
विभिन्न-कूबरम्
broken the pole

Hit by the tender leaf like dainty feet of the child lying underneath the huge cart, it upturned, crushing the various juices containing jars and pitchers, the wheels and axis of the cart were shattered and the pole was broken.


दृष्ट्वा यशोदाप्रमुखा व्रजस्त्रिय औत्थानिके कर्मणि या: समागता: ।

नन्दादयश्चाद्भुतदर्शनाकुला: कथं स्वयं वै शकटं विपर्यगात् ॥८॥


दृष्ट्वा यशोदा-
watching, Yashodaa
प्रमुखा व्रज-स्त्रिय:
the leading Vraja women
औत्थानिके कर्मणि
for the turning sides ceremony
या: समागता:
who had gathered
नन्द-आदय:-
Nanda and others
च-अद्भुत-दर्शन-आकुला:
and the amazing sight, perplexed
कथम् स्वयम् वै
'How by itself indeed
शकटम् विपर्यगात्
the cart upturned?'

Yashodaa, and the leading Vraja women who had gathered for the turning sides ceremony, and Nanda and others were perplexed watching the amazing sight, and exclaimed, 'How by itself indeed did the cart upturn?'


ऊचुरव्यवसितमतीन् गोपान् गोपीश्च बालका: ।

रुदतानेन पादेन क्षिप्तमेतन्न संशय: ॥९॥


ऊचु:-अव्यवसित-मतीन् गोपान्
said to the confused minded Gopas
गोपी:-च बालका:
Gopis and the children
रुदत-अनेन पादेन
crying by Him by the foot
क्षिप्तम्-एतत्-न-संशय:
was thrown this, without a doubt

The children playing there, said to the confused minded Gopas and Gopis that the cart was thrown about by Him by the foot, as He was crying, there is no doubt about this.


न ते श्रद्दधिरे गोपा बालभाषितमित्युत ।

अप्रमेयं बलं तस्य बालकस्य न ते विदु: ॥१०॥


न ते श्रद्दधिरे गोपा:
not they believe, the Gopas,
बाल-भाषितम्-इति-उत
the children's' talk, this is indeed
अप्रमेयम् बलम् तस्य
the unfathomable strength His,
बालकस्यन ते विदु:
of That Child, did not they know

The Gopas did not believe them, thinking it to be children's' talk indeed, for they did not know the unfathomable strength of That Child.


रुदन्तं सुतमादाय यशोदा ग्रहशङ्किता ।

कृतस्वस्त्ययनं विप्रै: सूक्तै: स्तनमपाययत् ॥११॥


रुदन्तम् सुतम्-आदाय
the crying son taking up
यशोदा ग्रह-शङ्किता
Yashodaa, evil spirits doubting
कृत-स्वस्त्ययनम् विप्रै:
had well-being performed by the Braahmanas
सूक्तै: स्तनम्-अपाययत्
with Vedic chants, (then) of the breast gave suck

Yashodaa took up the crying son, and doubting the presence of evil spirits, she made the Braahmanas to perform the well-being rituals by chanting Vedic hymns, and then gave Him the breasts' suck.


पूर्ववत् स्थापितं गोपैर्बलिभि: सपरिच्छदम् ।

विप्रा हुत्वार्चयाञ्चक्रुर्दध्यक्षतकुशाम्बुभि: ॥१२॥


पूर्व-वत् स्थापितम् गोपै:-
before like replaced by the Gopas,
बलिभि: सपरिच्छदम्
mighty, with the goods, (the cart)
विप्रा: हुत्वा-अर्चयान्-चक्रु:-
Braahmanas poured ablutions, worship performed
दधि-अक्षत-कुश-अम्बुभि:
with curds, unbroken rice, grass, and water

The mighty Gopas replaced the cart as before with its goods. The Braahmanas then poured oblation and performed the worship of the cart with curds, unbroken rice, grass, and water.


येऽसूयानृतदम्भेर्ष्याहिंसामानविवर्जिता: ।

न तेषां सत्यशीलानामाशिषो विफला: कृता: ॥१३॥


ये-असूया-अनृत-दम्भ-ईर्ष्या-
those, who of envy, untruth, hypocrisy, jealousy,
हिंसा-मान-विवर्जिता:
violence, pride are devoid of,
न तेषाम् सत्य-शीलानाम्-
not their the truthful ones
आशिष: विफला: कृता:
benedictions are in vain rendered

The truthful ones, who are devoid of envy, untruth, hypocrisy, jealousy, violence, pride, the benedictions uttered by them are not rendered in vain.


इति बालकमादाय सामर्ग्यजुरुपाकृतै: ।

जलै: पवित्रौषधिभिरभिषिच्य द्विजोत्तमै: ॥१४॥


इति बालकम्-आदाय
so, The Child taking,
साम-ऋक्-यजु:-उपाकृतै:
by Saama, Rik, Yajur, consecrated
जलै: पवित्र-औषधिभि:-
with water pure with herbs,
अभिषिच्य द्विज-उत्तमै:
sprinkling, by Braahmanas best

So, they took The Child, and got Him consecrated by the foremost of the Braahmanas, with the reciting of the chants from Saama, Rik and Yajur Vedas and sprinkled Him with pure water and herbs.


वाचयित्वा स्वस्त्ययनं नन्दगोप: समाहित: ।

हुत्वा चाग्निं द्विजातिभ्य: प्रादादन्नं महागुणम् ॥१५॥


वाचयित्वा स्वस्त्ययनम्
having got the well-being read
नन्द-गोप: समाहित:
Nanda the Gopas along with
हुत्वा च-अग्निम् द्विजातिभ्य:
oblations poured in the fire, and by Braahmanas
प्रादात्-अन्नम् महागुणम्
served food full of nutrition

Nanda, along with the other Gopas, having got the well-being chants chanted, poured oblation in the fire and offered nutritious food to the Braahmanas.


गाव: सर्वगुणोपेता वास:स्रग्रुक्ममालिनी: ।

आत्मजाभ्युदयार्थाय प्रादात्ते चान्वयुञ्जत ॥१६॥


गाव: सर्व-गुण-उपेता:
cows with all good qualities endowed
वास:-स्रक्-रुक्म-मालिनी:
with garments, garlands, golden necklaces
आत्मज-अभ्युदय-अर्थाय
for son's prosperity purpose,
प्रादात्-ते च-अनु-अयुञ्जत
gave, they and then blessed Him

Nanda, for the purpose of the prosperity of the son gave the cows endowed with all good qualities, adorned with garments, garlands, golden necklaces to the Braahmanas. They then gave their blessings.


विप्रा मन्त्रविदो युक्तास्तैर्या: प्रोक्तास्तथाऽऽशिष: ।

ता निष्फला भविष्यन्ति न कदाचिदपि स्फुटम् ॥१७॥


विप्रा: मन्त्र-विद: युक्ता:-
Braahmanas, the Mantra knowers, united,
तै:-या: प्रोक्ता:-तथा-आशिष:
by them what is said, and the benedictions
ता: निष्फला: भविष्यन्ति न
they fruitless become not
कदाचित्-अपि स्फुटम्
never ever, it is clear

It is clear that the benedictions, and what is said by the Mantra knower Braahmanas, who are united with God, never ever become fruitless.


एकदाऽऽरोहमारूढं लालयन्ती सुतं सती ।

गरिमाणं शिशोर्वोढुं न सेहे गिरिकूटवत् ॥१८॥


एकदा-आरोहम्-आरूढम्
once, in the lap seated,
लालयन्ती सुतम् सती
fondling the son, the good lady
गरिमाणम् शिशो:-वोढुम्
the weight of The Child to carry
न सेहे गिरि-कूट-वत्
could not bear, mountain peak like

Once, as the son was seated in the lap and the good lady Yashoda was fondling Him, she could not bear to carry the heavy weight of The Child, which was like the peak of a mountain.


भूमौ निधाय तं गोपी विस्मिता भारपीडिता ।

महापुरुषमादध्यौ जगतामास कर्मसु ॥१९॥


भूमौ निधाय तम् गोपी
on the floor placing Him, Gopi (Yashoda)
विस्मिता भार-पीडिता
surprised, by weight oppressed,
महापुरुम्-आदध्यौ
The Supreme Person contemplated on,
जगताम्-आस कर्मसु
of the worldly, involved, in duties

The Gopi, Yashoda was oppressed by His weight, and was surprised as she placed Him on the floor. Then, contemplating on the Supreme Person, she got involved in worldly duties.


दैत्यो नाम्ना तृणावर्त: कंसभृत्य: प्रणोदित: ।

चक्रवातस्वरूपेण जहारासीनम्-अर्भकम् ॥२०॥


दैत्य: नाम्ना तृणावर्त:
demon, by the name Trinaavarta,
कंस-भृत्य: प्रणोदित:
Kansa's servant directed by him
चक्रवात-स्वरूपेण जहार-
in a whirl-wind form carried away
आसीनम् अर्भकम्
the seated Babe

The demon named Trinaavarta, a servant of Kansa, directed by him, taking on a form of a whirl-wind carried away the seated Babe.


गोकुलं सर्वमावृण्वन् मुष्णंश्चक्षूंषि रेणुभि: ।

ईरयन् सुमहाघोरशब्देन प्रदिशो दिश: ॥२१॥


गोकुलम् सर्वम्-आवृण्वन्
Gokula whole enveloping
मुष्णन्-चक्षूंषि रेणुभि:
blinding the eyes by dust particles
ईरयन् सुमहा-घोर-शब्देन
shaking with great terrible roar
प्रदिश: दिश:
the corners and the directions

The whirl-wind enveloped the whole of Gokula, blinding the eyes by dust particles, shaking the directions and the corners with a great terrible roar.


मुहूर्तमभवद् गोष्ठं रजसा तमसाऽऽवृतम् ।

सुतं यशोदा नापश्यत्तस्मिन् न्यस्तवती यत: ॥२२॥


मुहूर्तम्-अभवद् गोष्ठम्
for an hour became the cow shed, (Vraja)
रजसा तमसा-आवृतम्
by dust and darkness enveloped
सुतम् यशोदा न-अपश्यत्-
the son, Yashodaa did not see,
तस्मिन् न्यस्तवती यत:
in that (place) she had put where

For an hour Vraja was enveloped in dust and darkness. Yashoda did not see her son in the place where she had placed Him.


नापश्यत् कश्चनात्मानं परं चापि विमोहित: ।

तृणावर्तनिसृष्टाभि: शर्कराभिरुपद्रुत: ॥२३॥


न-अपश्यत् कश्चन-आत्मानम्
did not see anything, oneself
परम्च-अपि विमोहित:
besides, and also perplexed,
तृणावर्त-निसृष्टाभि:
by Trinaavarta dispensed
शर्कराभि:-उपद्रुत:
dust particles confused

Completely confused and perplexed by the dust dispensed by Trinaavarta, they could not see themselves leave alone anything else.


इति खरपवनचक्रपांसुवर्षे सुतपदवीमबलाविलक्ष्य माता ।

अतिकरुणमनुस्मरन्त्यशोचद् भुवि पतिता मृतवत्सका यथा गौ: ॥२॥


इति खर-पवन-चक्र-
in such violent whirl-wind
पांसु-वर्षे सुत-पदवीम्-
sand showering, the son's where about
अबला-अविलक्ष्य माता
the helpless woman, not knowing, the mother
अति-करुणम्-अनुस्मरन्ति-
very pathetically, constantly thinking,
अशोचद् भुवि पतिता
lamented on the ground fell
मृत-वत्सका यथा गौ:
dead calf just as cow

In such a whirl-wind caused shower of dust, the helpless mother, did not know the whereabouts of her son. She was very pathetically constantly thinking of Him, and lamenting, she fell on the ground just as a cow on seeing its dead calf.


रुदितमनुनिशम्य तत्र गोप्यो भृशमनुतप्तधियोऽश्रुपूर्णमुख्य: ।

रुरुदुरनुपलभ्य नन्दसूनुं पवन उपारतपांसुवर्षवेगे ॥२५॥


रुदितम्-अनुनिशम्य तत्र
the crying hearing there,
गोप्य: भृशम्-अनुतप्त-धिय:-
the Gopis, greatly tormented at heart,
अश्रु-पूर्ण-मुख्य:
with tear smeared face
रुरुदु:-अनुपलभ्य
wept, not finding
नन्द-सूनुम्
Nanda's Dear Son
पवन उपारत पांसु-वर्ष-वेगे
as the wind had abated and the sand storm

There, the Gopis heard the cries of Yashodaa, and were greatly tormented at heart, they wept, their faces were smeared with tears for not finding The Dear Son of Nanda, even as the wind and the dust storm abated.


तृणावर्त: शान्तरयो वात्यारूपधरो हरन्।

कृष्णं नभोगतो गन्तुं नाशक्नोद् भूरिभारभृत् ॥२६॥


तृणावर्त: शान्त-रय:
Trinaavarta, subdued of fury
वात्या-रूप-धर: हरन्
wind form assuming, whisking away
कृष्णम् नभ:-गत:
Krishna, in the sky having gone
गन्तुम् न-अशक्नोद्
to go (further) could not
भूरि-भार-भृत्
heavy weight carrying

Trinaavarta, assuming the form of a whirl-wind, had whisked away Krishna and had gone to the skies, but he could not go further, because of the very heavy weight of Krishna, and his fury was subdued.


तमश्मानं मन्यमान आत्मनो गुरुमत्तया ।

गले गृहीत उत्स्रष्टुं नाशक्नोदद्भुतार्भकम् ॥२७॥


तम्-अश्मानम् मन्यमान:
Him a rock considering
आत्मन: गुरु-मत्तया
by own heaviness great
गले गृहीत: उत्स्रष्टुम्
by the throat held, to release himself
न-अशक्नोत्-अद्भुत-अर्भकम्
was not able, the strange child

Trinaavarta considered Him to be a rock Whose heaviness was more than his own, and he was not able to release himself as he was caught by the neck by The strange Child.


गलग्रहणनिश्चेष्टो दैत्यो निर्गतलोचन: ।

अव्यक्तरावो न्यपतत् सहबालो व्यसुर्व्रजे ॥२८॥


गल-ग्रहण-निश्चेष्ट:
by the neck held, motionless
दैत्य: निर्गत-लोचन:
the demon with shot out eyes
अव्यक्त-राव: न्यपतत्
indistinct groan, fell,
सह-बाल: व्यसु:-व्रजे
along with The Child, dead, in Vraja

Held by the neck, the demon became motionless, his eyes shot out, and with a indistinct groan, he fell life-less, along with The Child, in Vraja.


तमन्तरिक्षात् पतितं शिलायां विशीर्णसर्वावयवं करालम् ।

पुरं यथा रुद्रशरेण विद्धं स्त्रियो रुदत्यो ददृशु: समेता: ॥२९॥


तम्-अन्तरिक्षात् पतितम्
him from the skies fallen,
शिलायाम् विशीर्ण-सर्व-
on the rock, shattered all
अवयवम् करालम्
limbs terrifying
पुरम् यथा रुद्र-शरेण
the city just as by Shiva's arrows
विद्धम् स्त्रिय: रुदत्य:
pierced, the women crying,
ददृशु: समेता:
saw assembled

The crying women who had assembled there, saw him fall from the skies, on the rock, with all his terrifying limbs shattered, just as the city demon, Tripuraasura, was pierced by the arrows of Shiva.


प्रादाय मात्रे प्रतिहृत्य विस्मिता: कृष्णं च तस्योरसि लम्बमानम् ।

तं स्वस्तिमन्तं पुरुषादनीतं विहायसा मृत्युमुखात् प्रमुक्तम् ।

गोप्यश्च गोपा: किल नन्दमुख्या लब्ध्वा पुन: प्रापुरतीव मोदम् ॥३०॥


प्रादाय मात्रे प्रतिहृत्य
returning (Him) to the mother, retrieving
विस्मिता: कृष्णम् च
amazed, Krishna and
तस्य-उरसि लम्बमानम्
from his bosom dangling
तम् स्वस्तिमन्तम्
Him sound of body
पुरुषात्-अनीतम् विहायसा
from the demon taken to the sky
मृत्यु-मुखात् प्रमुक्तम्
from death jaws released
गोप्य:-च गोपा: किल
the Gopis and the Gopas, indeed
नन्द-मुख्या लब्ध्वा पुन:
led by Nanda, getting back again
प्रापु:-अतीव मोदम्
attained great joy

The Gopis and the Gopas, led by Nanda, retrieved Him dangling from the chest of the demon, who had taken Him to the sky, found Him sound in body, and returned Him to the mother, as if bring Him back from the jaws of death. Getting Him back again, they attained great joy.


अहो बतात्यद्भुतमेष रक्षसा बालो निवृत्तिं गमितोऽभ्यगात् पुन: ।

हिंस्र: स्वपापेन विहिंसित: खल: साधु: समत्वेन भयाद् विमुच्यते ॥३१॥


अहो बत्-अति-अद्भुतम्-
'Oh indeed very wonderful!
एष: रक्षसा बाल:
by this demon the child
निवृत्तिम् गमित:-अभ्यगात् पुन:
to its end taken, returned again
हिंस्र: स्व-पापेन विहिंसित:
the cruel by own sin, is destroyed
खल: साधु: समत्वेन
the wicked, by noble even-mindedness
भयाद् विमुच्यते
from fear is freed

'Oh indeed this is very wonderful! The Child was taken to Its end by this demon but has returned back safely. The cruel wicked person is destroyed by his own sin, whereas the noble by His even-mindedness is freed from all fear.'


किं नस्तपश्चीर्णमधोक्षजार्चनं पूर्तेष्टदत्तमुत भूतसौहृदम् ।

यत्संपरेत: पुनरेव बालको दिष्ट्या स्वबन्धून् प्रणयन्नुपस्थित: ॥३२॥


किम् न:-तप:-चीर्णम्-
what by us austerities performed
अधोक्षज-अर्चनम्
Lord Vishnu's worship,
पूर्त-इष्ट-दत्तम्-उत
liberal donations, the desired given, and
भूत-सौहृदम्
to beings helpful
यत्-संपरेत: पुन:-एव
that, almost dead, again also
बालक: दिष्ट्या
The Child by good luck
स्व-बन्धून् प्रणयन्-
own kins to please
उपस्थित:
is present

'What austerities were performed by us, like the worship of Lord Vishnu, liberal public donations, charity of the desired objects, or being benevolent to fellow beings, that The Child almost dead, has come back by good luck, for the pleasure of the kin folks.'


दृष्ट्वाद्भुतानि बहुशो नन्दगोपो बृहद्वने ।

वसुदेववचो भूयो मानयामास विस्मित: ॥३३॥


दृष्ट्वा-अद्भुतानि बहुश:
seeing the strange, many (events)
नन्द-गोप: बृहद्वने
Nanda and the Gopas in Gokula
वसुदेव-वच: भूय:
Vasudeva's words again and again
मानयामास विस्मित:
affirmed amazed

Nanda and the other Gopas saw the many strange happenings in Gokula, and in amazement again and again affirmed the words of Vasudeva.


एकदार्भकमादाय स्वाङ्कमारोप्य भामिनि ।

प्रस्नुतं पाययामास स्तनं स्नेहपरिप्लुता ॥३४॥


एकदा-अर्भकम्-आदाय
one day, The Babe taking up
स्व-अङ्कम्-आरोप्य भामिनि
in (her) own lap placing, the gentle lady
प्रस्नुतम् पाययामास स्तनम्
the oozing, suckled breast
स्नेह-परिप्लुता
with affection over-whelmed

One day, the gentle lady Yashodaa, over-whelmed with affection, placed The Babe on her own lap and gave Him her oozing breast to suck.


पीतप्रायस्य जननी सा तस्य रुचिरस्मितम् ।

मुखं लालयती राजञ्जृम्भतो ददृशे इदम् ॥३५॥


पीत-प्रायस्य जननी सा
of sucking having finished, mother that,
तस्य रुचिर-स्मितम्
His charming smile
मुखम् लालयती राजन्-
mouth caressing, O King!
जृम्भत: ददृशे इदम्
when yawning saw this

As The Babe had finished sucking He smiled charmingly. O King! The mother caressed His mouth, and when He yawned, in His mouth she saw this,…


खं रोदसी ज्योतिरनीकमाशा: सूर्येन्दुवह्निश्वसनाम्बुधींश्च ।

द्वीपान् नगांस्तद्दुहितृर्वनानि भूतानि यानि स्थिरजङ्गमानि ॥३६॥


खम् रोदसी ज्योति:-अनीकम्-
the sky, the horizon, the luminaries' hosts
आशा: सूर्य-इन्दु-
the directions, the Sun, the Moon,
वह्नि-श्वसन-अम्बुधीन्-च
Fire, the air, the oceans and
द्वीपान् नगान्-तत्-दुहितृ:-
the continents, mountains, their daughters
वनानि भूतानि यानि
forests, the beings all those
स्थिर-जङ्गमानि
immobile and mobile

The sky, the horizon, the host of luminaries, the directions, the Sun, the Moon, Fire, the air, the oceans and the continents, mountains, their daughters (the rivers), forests, the beings, all those that are immobile and mobile.


सा वीक्ष्य विश्वं सहसा राजन् सञ्जातवेपथु: ।

सम्मील्य मृगशावाक्षी नेत्रे आसीत् सुविस्मिता ॥३७॥


सा वीक्ष्य विश्वम् सहसा
she witnessing the universe suddenly
राजन् सञ्जात-वेपथु:
O King! started shivering
सम्मील्य मृग-शाव-अक्षी
closing, the fawn eyed
नेत्रे आसीत् सुविस्मिता
the eyes, remained very amazed

O King! She suddenly witnessed the universe, and started shivering, the fawn eyed Yashodaa closed her eyes and remained amazed.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे तृणावर्तमोक्षो नाम सप्तम: अध्याय: ॥७॥
