राजा-उवाच -
The King said -
नागालयं रमणकं कस्मात्तत्याज कालिय: ।
कृतं किं वा सुपर्णस्य तेनैकेनासमञ्जसम् ॥१॥
नाग-आलयम् रमणकम्
of the serpents the home Ramanaka
कस्मात्-तत्याज कालिय:
for what reason, leave Kaaliya
कृतम् किम् वा सुपर्णस्य
done what or of Gaduda
तेन-एकेन-असमञ्जसम्
by him alone wrong
For what reason did Kaaliya leave Ramanaka, the home of the serpents? What wrong had Kaaliya alone done towards Gaduda?
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
उपहार्यै: सर्पजनैर्मासि मासीह यो बलि: ।
वानस्पत्यो महाबाहो नागानां प्राङ् निरूपित: ॥२॥
उपहार्यै: सर्प-जनै:-मासि
brought by the serpent people, month to
मासि-इह य: बलि:
month, here, that offering,
वानस्पत्य: महाबाहो
at the foot of the tree, O mighty armed One!
नागानाम् प्राङ् निरूपित:
for the snakes previously decided
O mighty armed One! Here, at the foot of the tree, month by month, as previously decided, offering had to be brought for Gaduda, by the serpent people.
स्वं स्वं भागं प्रयच्छन्ति नागा: पर्वणि पर्वणि ।
गोपीथायात्मन: सर्वे सुपर्णाय महात्मने ॥३॥
स्वम् स्वम् भागम् प्रयच्छन्ति
each own share, offer
नागा: पर्वणि पर्वणि
the Naagas, on every Amaavasya (new moon)
गोपीथाय-आत्मन: सर्वे
for protection of self, all
सुपर्णाय महात्मने
for Gaduda the high minded
All the Naagas would offer offerings from their own share on every Amaavasya, new moon, day, for the high minded Gaduda, for their own protection.
विषवीर्यमदाविष्ट: काद्रवेयस्तु कालिय: ।
कदर्थीकृत्य गरुडं स्वयं तं बुभुजे बलिम् ॥४॥
विष-वीर्य-मद-आविष्ट:
of poison strength, intoxication impelled
काद्रवेय:-तु कालिय:
Kadru's son, indeed Kaaliya
कदर्थी-कृत्य गरुडम्
dishonour doing to Gaduda
स्वयम् तम् बुभुजे बलिम्
himself that consumed the offering
Kadru's son Kaaliya, impelled by the intoxication of an abundance of the poison's strength, committed dishonour to Gaduda, and consumed the offering himself.
तच्छ्रुत्वा कुपितो राजन् भगवान् भगवत्प्रिय: ।
विजिघांसुर्महावेग: कालियं समुपाद्रवत् ॥५॥
तत्-श्रुत्वा कुपित: राजन्
that hearing, in great anger, O King!
भगवान् भगवत्-प्रिय:
the glorious, The Lord's favourite
विजिघांसु:-महा-वेग:
wanting to kill, with great speed
कालियम् समुपाद्रवत्
on Kaaliya attacked
O King! Hearing that, Gaduda the glorious, The Lord's favourite, in great anger, attacked Kaaliya in great speed, wanting to kill him.
तमापतन्तं तरसा विषायुध: प्रत्यभ्ययादुच्छ्रितनैकमस्तक: ।
दद्भि: सुपर्णं व्यदशद् ददायुध: करालजिह्वोच्छ्वसितोग्रलोचन: ॥६॥
तम्-आपतन्तम् तरसा
him attacking quickly
विषायुध: प्रत्यभ्ययात्-
poison weaponed charged
उच्छ्रित-अनैक-मस्तक:
raised many hoods
दद्भि: सुपर्णम् व्यदशद्
by teeth Gaduda biting
दद-आयुध: कराल-जिह्व:
teeth weaponed fierce tongued
उच्छ्वसित-उग्र-लोचन:
breathing heavily, fiery eyed
Finding Gaduda to be attacking him quickly, the many fanged cobra, with poison as his weapon, raised his many hoods and charged at Gaduda, biting him with his teeth weapons, fierce tongued, breathing heavily, and fiery eyed.
तं तार्क्ष्यपुत्र: स निरस्य मन्युमान् प्रचण्डवेगो मधुसूदनासन: ।
पक्षेण सव्येन हिरण्यरोचिषा जघान कद्रुसुतमुग्रविक्रम: ॥७॥
तम् तार्क्ष्य-पुत्र: स:
him, Taarkshy's son he, (Gaduda)
निरस्य मन्युमान्
pushing back, full of rage,
प्रचण्ड-वेग: मधुसूदन-आसन:
of terrible speed, The Lord Madhusoodana mount,
पक्षेण सव्येन हिरण्य-रोचिषा
by the wing left, of golden brilliance
जघान कद्रु-सुतम्-उग्र-विक्रम:
struck Kadru's son, of extraordinary power
He, Gaduda, Taarkshy's son, seeing him, full of rage, possessing terrible speed, pushed him back. The mount of The Lord Madhusoodana, of extraordinary power, then struck Kadru's son, Kaaliya, with his left wing, brilliant as gold.
सुपर्णपक्षाभिहत: कालियोऽतीव विह्वल: ।
ह्रदं विवेश कालिन्द्यास्तदगम्यं दुरासदम् ॥८॥
सुपर्ण-पक्ष-अभिहत:
by Gaduda's wing hit
कालिय:-अतीव विह्वल:
Kaaliya, very badly tormented
ह्रदम् विवेश कालिन्द्या:-
the pool entered of Yamunaa,
तत्-अगम्यम् दुरासदम्
that, unapproachable and difficult to enter
Kaaliya, hit by the wing of Gaduda was very much tormented and entered that pool in the Yamuna river which is inaccessible and very difficult to enter.
तत्रैकदा जलचरं गरुडो भक्ष्यमीप्सितम् ।
निवारित: सौभरिणा प्रसह्य क्षुधितोऽहरत् ॥९॥
तत्र-एकदा जलचरम्
there, one day, a fish,
गरुड: भक्ष्यम्-ईप्सितम्
Gaduda, a food, (his) favourite,
निवारित: सौभरिणा
stopped by (the sage) Saubhari
प्रसह्य क्षुधित:-अहरत्
forcibly, hungry, took away
There, one day, Gaduda, hungry as he was, had forcibly taken away a fish, his favourite food, even though he was stopped by the sage Saubhari.
मीनान् सुदु:खितान् दृष्ट्वा दीनान् मीनपतौ हते ।
कृपया सौभरि: प्राह तत्रत्यक्षेममाचरन् ॥१०॥
मीनान् सुदु:खितान् दृष्ट्वा
the fish, very grieved, seeing,
दीनान् मीन-पतौ हते
helpless, of the fish the leader being killed
कृपया सौभरि: प्राह
with compassion Saubhari said
तत्रत्य-क्षेमम्-आचरन्
of those creatures security enabling
The leader of the fish being killed, the fish were very grieved and helpless. Seeing them so, Saurabhi with compassion, enabling the security of those creatures, declared,….
अत्र प्रविश्य गरुडो यदि मत्स्यान् स खादति ।
सद्य: प्राणैर्वियुज्येत सत्यमेतद् ब्रवीम्यहम् ॥११॥
अत्र प्रविश्य गरुड: यदि
here entering, Gaduda, if,
मत्स्यान् स: खादति
fish he eats,
सद्य: प्राणै:-वियुज्येत
immediately life will be deprived of
सत्यम्-एतत् ब्रवीमि-अहम्
truth this declare I
'If Gaduda, enters this place, and he eats the fish, immediately he will be deprived of his life. This is a truth I declare.'
तं कालिय: परं वेद नान्य: कश्चन लेलिह: ।
अवात्सीद् गरुडाद् भीत: कृष्णेन च विवासित: ॥१२॥
तम् कालिय: परम् वेद
that Kaaliya other than knew
न-अन्य: कश्चन लेलिह:
no other any snake
अवात्सीद् गरुडाद् भीत:
lived, Gaduda afraid of
कृष्णेन च विवासित:
by Krishna and exterminated
This thing no snake knew other than Kaaliya, who lived there, being afraid of Gaduda. He was exterminated by Lord Krishna.
कृष्णं ह्रदाद् विनिष्क्रान्तं दिव्यस्रग्गन्धवाससम् ।
महामणिगणाकीर्णं जाम्बूनदपरिष्कृतम् ॥१३॥
कृष्णम् ह्रदात् विनिष्क्रान्तम्
Krishna, from the pool coming out
दिव्य-स्रक्-गन्ध-वाससम्
divine garland, sandal paste, clothes wearing,
महा-मणि-गण-आकीर्णम्
great gems numberless graced with
जाम्बूनद परिष्कृतम्
golden ornaments adorned with
Seeing Krishna coming out of the pool, with a divine garland, sandal paste, and ethereal clothes wearing, graced with numberless huge gems, and adorned with golden ornaments,…
उपलभ्योत्थिता: सर्वे लब्धप्राणा इवासव: ।
प्रमोदनिभृतात्मानो गोपा: प्रीत्याभिरेभिरे ॥१४॥
उपलभ्य-उत्थिता: सर्वे
finding, rose all
लब्ध-प्राणा: इव-असव:
regaining life like the senses, (are restored)
प्रमोद-निभृत-आत्मान:
with joy and rapture hearted,
गोपा: प्रीत्या-अभिरेभिरे
the Gopas with great love hugged
All the Gopas finding Him thus, rose from stooper, like the senses are restored when the life is regained. With their hearts full of joy and rapture, they hugged Him with great love.
यशोदा रोहिणी नन्दो गोप्यो गोपाश्च कौरव ।
कृष्णं समेत्य लब्धेहा आसँल्लब्धमनोरथा: ॥१५॥
यशोदा रोहिणी नन्द:
Yashodaa, Rohinee, Nanda,
गोप्य: गोपा:-च कौरव
the Gopis, Gopas and O scion of the Kurus!
कृष्णम् समेत्य लब्ध-इहा
Krishna meeting, regained consciousness,
आसन्-लब्ध-मनोरथा:
became fulfilled of desires
O scion of the Kurus! Yashodaa, Rohinee, Nanda, the Gopis, and the Gopas regained their consciousness, having met Shree Krishna, and became fulfilled of desires.
रामश्चाच्युतमालिङ्ग्य जहासास्यानुभाववित् ।
नगा गावो वृषा वत्सा लेभिरे परमां मुदम् ॥१६॥
राम:-च-अच्युतम्-आलिङ्ग्य
Balaraama, and The Immortal, embracing,
जहास-अस्य-अनुभाव-वित्
laughed, His greatness knowing
नगा: गाव: वृषा: वत्सा:
mountains and trees, bulls, calves
लेभिरे परमाम् मुदम्
derived great joy
Balaraama embraced The Immortal Lord and laughed, knowing His greatness. Even the mountains, trees, bulls, calves, derived great joy.
नन्दं विप्रा: समागत्य गुरव: सकलत्रका: ।
ऊचुस्ते कालियग्रस्तो दिष्ट्या मुक्तस्तवात्मज: ॥१७॥
नन्दम् विप्रा: समागत्य
to Nanda, the Braahmanas, coming up to,
गुरव: स-कलत्रका:
the preceptors with their wives
ऊचु:-ते कालिय-ग्रस्त:
said, 'Your, by Kaaliya seized
दिष्ट्या मुक्त:-तव-आत्मज:
fortunately liberated your son'
The Braahmanas, and the preceptors with their wives, came up to Nandaa and said, 'Your son was seized by Kaaliya. It is fortunate that he is liberated.'
देहि दानं द्विजातीनां कृष्णनिर्मुक्तिहेतवे ।
नन्द: प्रीतमना राजन् गा: सुवर्णं तदादिशत् ॥१८॥
देहि दानम् द्विजातीनाम्
give gift to the Braahmanas
कृष्ण-निर्मुक्ति-हेतवे
Krishna's deliverance due to
नन्द: प्रीतमना: राजन्
Nanda delighted minded, O King!
गा: सुवर्णम् तत्-आदिशत्
cows, gold, then gifted
'Give gifts to the Braahmanas on the account of Krishna's deliverance.' Nanda with a delighted mind, then gifted cows and gold, O King.
यशोदापि महाभागा नष्टलब्धप्रजा सती ।
परिष्वज्याङ्कमारोप्य मुमोचाश्रुकलां मुहु: ॥१९॥
यशोदा-अपि महा-भागा
Yashoda also the greatly fortunate
नष्ट-लब्ध-प्रजा सती
lost, found child, the noble,
परिष्वज्य-अङ्कम्-आरोप्य
embraced, on the lap placing
मुमोच-अश्रु-कलाम् मुहु:
shed tears streams again and again
Also the noble Yashodaa, the greatly fortunate having recovered the child Who was almost lost, hugged Him, and placing Him on the lap, shed streams of tears again and again.
तां रात्रिं तत्र राजेन्द्र क्षुत्तड्भ्यां श्रमकर्शिता: ।
ऊषुर्व्रजौकसो गाव: कालिन्द्या उपकूलत: ॥२०॥
ताम् रात्रिम् तत्र राजेन्द्र
that night, there, O King of kings!
क्षुत्-तड्भ्याम् श्रम-कर्शिता:
by hunger and thirst and fatigue oppressed
ऊषु:-व्रजौकस: गाव:
slept the Vraja inhabitants, cows
कालिन्द्या उपकूलत:
on Yamuna's banks near
O King of kings! that night, there, the inhabitants of Vraja and the cows, oppressed by hunger, thirst and fatigue, slept near the banks of the Yamunaa river.
तदा शुचिवनोद्भूतो दावाग्नि: सर्वतो व्रजम् ।
सुप्तं निशीथ आवृत्य प्रदग्धुमुपचक्रमे ॥२१॥
तदा शुचिवन-उद्भूत:
at that time, from dry forest, ensued
दावा-अग्नि: सर्वत: व्रजम्
wild fire, from all sides Vraja
सुप्तम् निशीथे आवृत्य
sleeping, in the night, surrounding
प्रदग्धुम्-उपचक्रमे
to burn started
At that time, in the night a wild fire ensued from the dry forest, which surrounded the whole of sleeping Vraja, and started to burn it.
तत उत्थाय सम्भ्रान्ता दह्यमाना व्रजौकस: ।
कृष्णं ययुस्ते शरणं मायामनुजमीश्वरम् ॥२२॥
तत: उत्थाय सम्भ्रान्ता:
then, arising bewildered
दह्यमाना: व्रजौकस:
scorched the Vraja inhabitants
कृष्णम् ययु:-ते शरणम्
to Krishna went they for shelter,
माया-मनुजम्-ईश्वरम्
by Maayaa the human, All mighty Lord
The scorched inhabitants of Vraja, arose in bewilderment and went for refuge, to Krishna, The All-mighty Lord, a human by Maayaa.
कृष्ण कृष्ण महाभाग हे रामामितविक्रम ।
एष घोरतमो वह्निस्तावकान् ग्रसते हि न: ॥२३॥
कृष्ण कृष्ण महाभाग
Krishna! Krishna! O highly blessed One!
हे राम-अमित-विक्रम
Oh Raama! of undiminished power!
एष: घोरतम: वह्नि:-
this fierce most fire
तावकान् ग्रसते हि न:
Your own people devours, indeed us
'Krishna! Krishna! O highly blessed One! Oh Raama! of undiminished power! This most fierce fire devours us, indeed Your own people.'
सुदुस्तरान्न: स्वान् पाहि कालाग्ने: सुहृद: प्रभो ।
न शक्नुमस्त्वच्चरणं संत्यक्तुमकुतोभयम् ॥२४॥
सुदुस्तरात्-न: स्वान् पाहि
difficult to escape from us, Your own, protect
काल-अग्ने: सुहृद: प्रभो
the deadly fire, friends O Lord!
न शक्नुम:-त्वत्-चरणम्
are not able, Your feet
संत्यक्तुम्-अकुत:-भयम्
to leave, secure from fear
O Lord! Do protect us, Your own friends, from the deadly fire which is difficult to escape from. We are unable to leave Your feet which are the abode of fearlessness.
इत्थं स्वजनवैक्लव्यं निरीक्ष्य जगदीश्वर: ।
तमग्निमपिबत्तीव्रमनन्तोऽनन्तशक्तिधृक् ॥२५॥
इत्थम् स्वजन-वैक्लव्यम्
in this manner, own people torment
निरीक्ष्य जगत्-ईश्वर:
observing, The universe's Ruler
तम्-अग्निम्-अपिबत्-तीव्रम्-
that fire drank, fierce,
अनन्त:-अनन्त-शक्ति-धृक्
The Infinite (Lord), unlimited energy possessed of
In this manner, The Ruler of the universe observing His own people tormented, The Infinite Lord, possessed of unlimited energy, drank the fierce fire.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे दावाग्निमोचनं नाम सप्तदश: अध्याय: ॥१७॥
Thus ends the seventeenth discourse entitled, 'Shree Krishna rescues the inhabitants of Vraja from wild fire,' in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
