श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
अथ कृष्ण: परिवृतो ज्ञातिभिर्मुदितात्मभि: ।

अनुगीयमानो न्यविशद् व्रजं गोकुलमण्डितम् ॥१॥


अथ कृष्ण: परिवृत:
after that, Krishna surrounded by
ज्ञातिभि:-मुदित-आत्मभि:
(His) kinsfolk delighted at heart,
अनुगीयमान: न्यविशद् व्रजम्
being glorified by them, entered Vraja
गोकुल-मण्डितम्
with the cows' herds graced

After that, Krishna, surrounded by His kinsfolk, who were delighted at heart and were glorifying Him, entered Vraja, graced by herds of cows.


व्रजे विक्रीडतोरेवं गोपालच्छद्ममायया ।

ग्रीष्मो नामर्तुरभवन्नातिप्रेयाञ्छरीरिणाम् ॥२॥


व्रजे विक्रीडत:-एवम्
in Vraja sporting thus as
गोपाल-च्छद्म-मायया
cowherd disguised, by Maayaa
ग्रीष्म: नाम-ऋतु:-अभवत्-
summer named season set in
न-अति-प्रेयान्-शरीरिणाम्
not very agreeable to the embodied beings

As the two brothers sported in Vraja in the guise of cowherds, by Maayaa, the season of summer set in which is not very agreeable to the embodied beings.


स च वृन्दावनगुणैर्वसन्त इव लक्षित: ।

यत्रास्ते भगवान् साक्षाद् रामेण सह केशव: ॥३॥


स: च वृन्दावन-गुणै:-
that (season) and by Vrindaavan's particular (weather)
वसन्त: इव लक्षित:
spring like regarded
यत्र-आस्ते भगवान् साक्षात्
where lived The Lord in person
रामेण सह केशव:
Raama along with Keshava

Due to the particular weather of Vrindaavana, that season of summer was regarded as spring, where The Lord Keshava lived in person along with Balaraama.


यत्र निर्झरनिर्ह्रादनिवृत्तस्वनझिल्लिकम् ।

शश्वत्तच्छीकरर्जीषद्रुममण्डलमण्डितम् ॥४॥


यत्र निर्झर-निर्ह्राद-
where the streams gurgling
निवृत्त-स्वन-झिल्लिकम्
subdued the chirping of the crickets
शश्वत्-तत्-शीकर-ऋजीष-
constant that spray (of water) fresh
द्रुम-मण्डल-मण्डितम्
trees clusters adorned with

Where, the chirping of the crickets was subdued by the gurgling sound of the streams, and with their incessant water spray the clusters of trees looked fresh, which adorned that land.


सरित्सर:प्रस्रवणोर्मिवायुना कह्लारकञ्जोत्पलरेणुहारिणा ।

न विद्यते यत्र वनौकसां दवो निदाघवह्न्यर्कभवोऽतिशाद्वले ॥५॥


सरित्-सर:-प्रस्रवण:-
rivers, lakes, streams,
ऊर्मि-वायुना कह्लारकञ्ज-
waves, breeze blowing, the Kalhaara, water lilies,
उत्पल-रेणु-हारिणा
and lotuses' pollen carrying
न विद्यते यत्र
did not exist where
वनौकसाम् दव: निदाघ-वह्नि-
for the forest beings, heat, of wild fire
अर्क-भव:-अति-शाद्वले
or Sun generated, in the very green (meadows)

There were rivers and lakes and streams, the breeze blowing over which carried the pollens of Kalhaara, water lilies and lotuses. Cooled by which, in that very green meadow, for the forest beings, there did not exist any heat, either of wild fire or generated by the Sun.


अगाधतोयह्रदिनीतटोर्मिभिर्द्रवत्पुरीष्या: पुलिनै: समन्तत: ।

न यत्र चण्डांशुकरा विषोल्बणा भुवो रसं शाद्वलितं च गृह्णते ॥६॥


अगाध-तोय-ह्रदिनी-
voluminous water river
तट-उर्मिभि:-द्रवत्-पुरीष्या:
banks waves washing the dirt
पुलिनै: समन्तत:
on the banks all around
न यत्र चण्ड-अंशुकरा:
not where the strong rays of the Sun,
विष-उल्बणा: भुव: रसम्
poison emitting (like) of the earth's the moisture
शाद्वलितम् च गृह्णते
greenery and takes away

The waves on the banks of the rivers containing voluminous water, washed the dirt all around the banks. Where, the harsh rays of the Sun, as if emitting poison, could not take away the moisture and greenery of the land.


वनं कुसुमितं श्रीमन्नदच्चित्रमृगद्विजम् ।

गायन्मयूरभ्रमरं कूजत्कोकिलसारसम् ॥७॥


वनम् कुसुमितम् श्रीमत्-
the woodland, full of blossoms, glorious,
नदत्-चित्र-मृग-द्विजम्
resounding with various animals and birds,
गायन्-मयूर-भ्रमरम्
with notes of peacocks, bees,
कूजत्-कोकिल-सारसम्
and cooing of cuckoos and cranes

The glorious woodland of Vrindaavana was full of blossoms, resounding with the calls of various animals and birds, the notes of peacocks and bees, and cooing of cuckoos and cranes.


क्रीडिष्यमाणस्तत् कृष्णो भगवान् बलसंयुत: ।

वेणुं विरणयन् गोपैर्गोधनै: संवृतोऽविशत् ॥८॥


क्रीडिष्यमाण:-तत्
sporting there,
कृष्ण: भगवान् बल-संयुत:
The Lord Krishna, Balaraama along with
वेणुम् विरणयन् गोपै:-
flute playing, with cowherds
गो-धनै: संवृत:-अविशत्
and cattle wealth accompanied with, entered

Lord Krishna along with Balaraama, sporting, playing the flute, and accompanied by the cowherds and the wealth of cattle, entered that.


प्रवालबर्हस्तबकस्रग्धातुकृतभूषणा: ।

रामकृष्णादयो गोपा ननृतुर्युयुधुर्जगु: ॥९॥


प्रवाल-बर्ह-स्तबक-
of tender leaves, peacock plumes
स्रक्-धातु-कृत-भूषणा:
garlands, minerals making ornaments
राम-कृष्ण-आदय: गोपा:
Raama, Krishna and other cowherds
ननृतु:-युयुधु:-जगु:
danced, wrestled and sang

The cowherds and Krishna and Balaraama adorned themselves making ornaments of tender leaves, peacock plumes, garlands and minerals. They danced, wrestled and sang as they went.


कृष्णस्य नृत्यत: केचिज्जगु: केचिदवादयन् ।

वेणुपाणितलै: शृङ्गै: प्रशशंसुरथापरे ॥१०॥


कृष्णस्य नृत्यत: केचित्-
on Krishna's dancing, some
जगु: केचित्-अवादयन्
sang, some played
वेणु-पाणि-तलै: शृङ्गै:
the flute, clapping gave the beats, horns
प्रशशंसु:-अथ-अपरे
applauded then others

When Krishna danced, some cowherds sang, some played the flute and the horn, some gave the beats by clapping and others applauded.


गोपजातिप्रतिच्छन्नौ देवा गोपालरूपिण: ।

ईडिरे कृष्णरामौ च नटा इव नटं नृप ॥११॥


गोप-जाति प्रतिच्छन्नौ
cowherds' clan disguised as
देवा: गोपाल-रूपिण:
the gods, in cowherds form
ईडिरे कृष्ण-रामौ
extolled Shree Krishna and Balaraama
च नटा इव नटम् नृप
and actors like the actor, O King!

O King! The gods in the form of cowherds, disguised in the cowherds' clan, extolled Shree Raama and Balaraama, just as the actors would praise the leading actors.


भ्रामणैर्लङ्घनै: क्षेपैरास्फोटनविकर्षणै: ।

चिक्रीडतुर्नियुद्धेन काकपक्षधरौ क्वचित् ॥१२॥


भ्रामणै:-लङ्घनै: क्षेपै:-
by revolving, jumping, putting,
आस्फोटन-विकर्षणै:
slapping the arms, clapping, tug of war,
चिक्रीडतु:-नियुद्धेन
played, wrestling
काक-पक्ष-धरौ क्वचित्
curly hair wearing both, sometimes

Sometimes they both having curly dark hair, played the games of revolving, jumping, putting, slapping the arms, clapping, doing tug of war, and wrestling.


क्वचिन्नृत्यत्सु चान्येषु गायकौ वादकौ स्वयम् ।

शशंसतुर्महाराज साधु साध्विति वादिनौ ॥१३॥


क्वचित्-नृत्यत्सु च-अन्येषु
sometimes (when) danced and others
गायकौ वादकौ स्वयम्
singers (flute) players Themselves (became)
शशंसतु:-महाराज
applauded, O Great King!
साधु साधु-इति वादिनौ
Well done! Well done! thus saying

Sometimes, O Great King! They Themselves sang and played the flute when the others danced, and applauded them saying, 'Well done! Well done.'


क्वचिद् बिल्वै: क्वचित् कुम्भै: क्व चामलकमुष्टिभि: ।

अस्पृश्यनेत्रबन्धाद्यै: क्वचिन्मृगखगेहया ॥१४॥


क्वचिद् बिल्वै: क्वचित् कुम्भै:
sometimes with Bilvas (fruits), sometimes with Kumbha,
क्व च-आमलक-मुष्टिभि:
at times and with Aamalaka in fist
अस्पृश्य-नेत्र-बन्ध-आद्यै:
(games of) not to touch, eyes closing, and others,
क्वचित्-मृग-खग-ईहया
sometimes by animals and birds imitating

They would sometimes play with Bilvas fruits, sometimes with Kumbha fruits and at times with Aamalaka fruits in their fists. They also played the games of not letting being touched, with closed eyes and at times imitated the animals and birds.


क्वचिच्च दर्दुरप्लावैर्विविधैरुपहासकै: ।

कदाचित् स्पन्दोलिकया कर्हिचिन्नृपचेष्टया ॥१५॥


क्वचित्-च दर्दुर-प्लावै:-
sometimes and by frog hopping
विविधै:-उपहासकै:
different laughters,
कदाचित् स्पन्दोलिकया
at times with swings
कर्हिचित्-नृप-चेष्टया
at other times Kings imitating

Sometimes they played by hopping like a frog, laughing different laughters, at times with swinging on the swings, at other times imitating the Kings.


एवं तौ लोकसिद्धाभि: कीडाभिश्चेरतुर्वने ।

नद्यद्रिद्रोणिकुञ्जेषु काननेषु सरस्सु च ॥१६॥


एवम् तौ लोक-सिद्धाभि:
in this manner They both, of the mortals' played
कीडाभि:-चेरतु:-वने
games, roamed Vrindaavana,
नदी-अद्रि-द्रोणि-कुञ्जेषु
rivers, mountains, valleys, bowers
काननेषु सरस्सु च
in forests and ponds

In this manner, They both played the popular games played by the mortal young, and roamed the rivers, mountains, valleys, bowers, forests, and ponds of Vrindaavana.


पशूंश्चारयतोर्गोपैस्तद्वने रामकृष्णयो: ।

गोपरूपी प्रलम्बोऽगादसुरस्तज्जिहीर्षया ॥१७॥


पशून्-चारयत:-गोपै:-
the cattle grazing, with the cowherds,
तत्-वने राम-कृष्णयो:
in that forest, Balaraama and Krishna
गोप-रूपी प्रलम्ब:-अगात्-
in a Gopas disguise Pralamba came
असुर:-तत्-जिहीर्षया
a demon, them to kidnap

Once, as Balaraama and Shree Krishna were grazing the cattle in that forest, a demon came there in the disguise of a Gopa to kidnap them both.


तं विद्वानपि दाशार्हो भगवान् सर्वदर्शन: ।

अन्वमोदत तत्सख्यं वधं तस्य विचिन्तयन् ॥१८॥


तम् विद्वान्-अपि दाशार्ह:
him knowing though, Dashaarha
भगवान् सर्व-दर्शन:
The Lord, all perceiving
अन्वमोदत तत्-सख्यम्
entertained his friendship
वधम् तस्य विचिन्तयन्
killing his planning

Though The all-perceiving Lord Dashaarha, knew him, He entertained his friendship as He planned to kill him.


तत्रोपाहूय गोपालान् कृष्ण: प्राह विहारवित् ।

हे गोपा विहरिष्यामो द्वन्द्वीभूय यथायथम् ॥१९॥


तत्र-उपाहूय गोपालान्
there, calling the cowherd boys
कृष्ण: प्राह विहार-वित्
Krishna said, of games the knower,
हे गोपा: विहरिष्याम:
'O cowherd boys! we will play
द्वन्द्वी-भूय यथा-यथम्
in two groups divided, as per the rules

Krishna, the knower of games, called the cowherd boys there, and said, "O cowherd boys! We will divide ourselves into two groups and play as per the rules."


तत्र चक्रु: परिवृढौ गोपा रामजनार्दनौ ।

कृष्णसंघट्टिन: केचिदासन् रामस्य चापरे ॥२०॥


तत्र चक्रु: परिवृढौ
there, made the leaders
गोपा: राम-जनार्दनौ
the Gopas, Balaraama and Krishna
कृष्ण-संघट्टिन: केचित्-आसन्
Krishna's group some were
रामस्य च-अपरे
in Balaraama the others

There, the Gopas made Balaraama and Krishna the leaders. Some were in Krishna's group and others were in Balaraama group.


आचेरुर्विविधा: क्रीडा वाह्यवाहकलक्षणा: ।

यत्रारोहन्ति जेतारो वहन्ति च पराजिता: ॥२१॥


आचेरु:-विविधा: क्रीडा:
played various games
वाह्य-वाहक-लक्षणा:
of carried and carrier characterized by
यत्र-आरोहन्ति जेतार:
in which ride the winners,
वहन्ति च पराजिता:
carry and the losers

They played various games characterized by the carrier and carried concept. In which the winners ride on the backs of the losers, who carry them.


वहन्तो वाह्यमानश्च चारयन्तश्च गोधनम् ।

भाण्डीरकं नाम वटं जग्मु: कृष्णपुरोगमा: ॥२२॥


वहन्त: वाह्यमान:-च
carrying being carried and
चारयन्त:-च गोधनम्
grazing and the cattle wealth
भाण्डीरकम् नाम वटम्
Bhaandeeraka named Banayan
जग्मु: कृष्ण-पुरोगमा:
went to Krishna leading in front

In this manner, carrying and being carried, and grazing the cattle wealth, they went to the Bhaandeeraka named Banayan tree, with Krishna going ahead.


रामसङ्घट्टिनो यर्हि श्रीदामवृषभादय: ।

क्रीडायां जयिनस्तांस्तानूहु: कृष्णादयो नृप ॥२३॥


राम-सङ्घट्टिन: यर्हि
of Balaraama team, when
श्रीदाम वृषभ-आदय:
Shridaamaa, Vrishabha and others
क्रीडायाम् जयिन:-तान्-तान्
in the game the winners those all
ऊहु: कृष्ण-आदय: नृप
carried Krishna and others O King!

O King! When Shridaamaa and Vrishabha, of the team of Balaraama were the winners, Krishna and others carried them.


उवाह कृष्णो भगवान् श्रीदामानं पराजित: ।

वृषभं भद्रसेनस्तु प्रलम्बो रोहिणीसुतम् ॥२४॥


उवाह कृष्ण: भगवान्
carried Krishna The Lord
श्रीदामानम् पराजित:
Shridaamaa, the looser
वृषभम् भद्रसेन:-तु
Vrishabha, Bhadrasena indeed
प्रलम्ब: रोहिणी-सुतम्
Pralamba, Rohinee's son

The looser, The Lord Shree Krishna carried Shridaamaa, Bhadrasena indeed carried Vrishabha and Pralamba carried Rohinee's son Balaraama.


अविषह्यं मन्यमान: कृष्णं दानवपुङ्गव: ।

वहन् द्रुततरं प्रागादवरोहणत: परम् ॥२५॥


अविषह्यम् मन्यमान:
unbearable considering
कृष्णम् दानव-पुङ्गव:
Krishna, of the demons the foremost
वहन् द्रुततरम् प्रागात्-
carrying in speed, went beyond
अवरोहणत: परम्
from the demounting far

The foremost of the demons, Pralamba, considering Krishna to be unbearable for him, as a mount of Balaraama, carrying him in great speed, went far beyond the line of demounting.


तमुद्वहन् धरणिधरेन्द्रगौरवं महासुरो विगतरयो निजं वपु: ।

स आस्थित: पुरटपरिच्छदो बभौ तडिद्द्युमानुडुपतिवाडिवाम्बुद: ॥२६॥


तम्-उद्वहन् धरणिधरेन्द्र-
him (Balaraama) carrying, of a mountain's
गौरवम् महासुर:
weight, the great demon
विगत-रय: निजम् वपु:
dimmed of energy, own form
स: आस्थित: पुरट-परिच्छद:
he came to, golden ornaments adorned with,
बभौ तडित्-द्युमान्-
became, lightening flashing
उडुपति-वाद्-इव-अम्बुद:
of the stars the ruler, Moon like, the cloud

The great demon, when carrying Balaraama, having the weight of a huge mountain, found himself dimmed of energy. He came back to his own form adorned with golden ornaments, and looked like a cloud flashing lightening as it carried the ruler of the stars, the Moon.


निरीक्ष्य तद्वपुरलमम्बरे चरत् प्रदीप्तदृग् भ्रुकुटितटोग्रदंष्ट्रकम् ।

ज्वलच्छिखं कटककिरीटकुण्डलत्विषाद्भुतं हलधर ईषदत्रसत् ॥२७॥


निरीक्ष्य तत्-वपु:-
perceiving that body
अलम्-अम्बरे चरत्
in speed in the sky soaring
प्रदीप्त-दृग् भ्रुकुटि-तट-
with enflamed eyes, till the end of the eyebrows,
उग्र-दंष्ट्रकम्
pointed tusks,
ज्वलत्-शिखम्
burning like red hair,
कटक-किरीट-कुण्डल-
with bracelets, coronet and ear-rings,
त्विषा-अद्भुतम्
shine uncanny,
हलधर ईषद्-अत्रसत्
Balaraama was a bit perturbed

Balaraama was a bit perturbed perceiving that body soaring in speed in the sky, with enflamed eyes, till the end of the eyebrows, pointed tusks, burning like red hair, with the shine of the bracelets, coronet and ear-rings, uncanny.


अथागतस्मृतिरभयो रिपुं बलो विहायसार्थमिव हरन्तमात्मन: ।

रुषाहनच्छिरसि दृढेन मुष्टिना सुराधिपो गिरिमिव वज्ररंहसा ॥२८॥


अथ-आगत-स्मृति:-अभय:
then, regaining memory (of his divinity), unafraid
रिपुम् बल: विहाय-सार्थम्-
of the foe, Balaraama, abandoning the group,
इव हरन्तम्-आत्मन:
as though, kidnapping himself,
रुषा-अहन-शिरसि दृढेन
in anger, blew on the head, a tight
मुष्टिना सुराधिप: गिरिम्-
fist, the gods' king (Indra), the mountain
इव वज्र-रंहसा
like a thunderbolts' strike

Then, Balaraama, regaining the consciousness of his own divinity, was rid of the fear of the foe. He then, realizing that he was being taken away from the group, and kidnapped, in great rage he blew a tight fist on the head of the demon, just as Indra had struck the mountain with a thunderbolt strike.


स आहत: सपदि विशीर्णमस्तको मुखाद् वमन् रुधिरमपस्मृतोऽसुर: ।

महारवं व्यसुरपतत् समीरयन् गिरिर्यथा मघवत आयुधाहत: ॥२९॥


स: आहत: सपदि विशीर्ण-
he, when struck, immediately crushed
मस्तक: मुखाद् वमन्
headed, from mouth vomiting
रुधिरम्-अपस्मृत:-असुर:
blood, unconscious demon
महा-रवम् व्यसु:-अपतत्
with great roar, lifeless, fell
समीरयन् गिरि:-यथा
letting out, mountain just as
मघवत आयुध-आहत:
by Indra's weapon struck

When he was struck, the demon's head was immediately crushed, and he vomited blood from the mouth, and fell unconscious and lifeless, giving out a great roar, just as the mountains fell when they were struck by Indra's weapon.


दृष्ट्वा प्रलम्बं निहतं बलेन बलशालिना ।

गोपा: सुविस्मिता आसन् साधु साध्विति वादिन: ॥३०॥


दृष्ट्वा प्रलम्बम् निहतम्
seeing Pralamba killed
बलेन बलशालिना
by Balaraama, the powerful,
गोपा: सुविस्मिता आसन्
the Gopas, well surprised were
साधु साधु-इति वादिन:
Well done! Well done! Saying

The Gopas were well surprised to see Pralamba killed by powerful Balaraama, and they said, 'Well done! Well done!'


आशिषोऽभिगृणन्तस्तं प्रशशंसुस्तदर्हणम् ।

प्रेत्यागतमिवालिङ्ग्य प्रेमविह्वलचेतस: ॥३१॥


आशिष:-अभिगृणन्त:-तम्
blessings showered, him
प्रशशंसु:-तत्-अर्हणम्
praising, of that deserving,
प्रेत्य-आगतम्-इव-आलिङ्ग्य
from dead returned like embraced
प्रेम-विह्वल-चेतस:
with affection overwhelmed minds

They showered blessings on him, and praised him which he deserved, and embraced him, with minds over-whelmed with affection, as if he had come back from death.


पापे प्रलम्बे निहते देवा: परमनिर्वृता: ।

अभ्यवर्षन् बलं माल्यै: शशंसु: साधु साध्विति ॥३२॥


पापे प्रलम्बे निहते
on the sinful Pralamba being killed,
देवा: परम-निर्वृता:
the gods were very relieved
अभ्यवर्षन् बलम् माल्यै:
(they) showered Balaraama with garlands
शशंसु: साधु साधु इति
and applauded (saying), 'Well done! Well done!', thus

The sinful Pralamba being killed, the gods were very much relieved, and they showered garlands on Balaraama, and applauded him saying, 'Well done! Well done!', thus.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे प्रलम्बवधो नाम अष्टादश: अध्याय: ॥१८॥


Thus ends the eighteenth discourse entitled 'The Lord slays Pralamba,' in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
