श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
कीडासक्तेषु गोपेषु तद्गावो दूरचारिणी: ।

स्वैरं चरन्त्यो विविशुस्तृणलोभेन गह्वरम् ॥१॥


कीडा-आसक्तेषु गोपेषु
in play absorbed,
तत्-गाव: दूर-चारिणी:
their cows afar grazing
स्वैरम् चरन्त्य: विविशु:-
at will grazing, entered,
तृण-लोभेन गह्वरम्
for grass tempted, deep

As the cowherds were absorbed in play, their cows who were grazing afar, at will, tempted by green grass enter deep into the forest.


अजा गावो महिष्यश्च निर्विशन्त्यो वनाद् वनम् ।

इषीकाटवीं निर्विविशु: क्रन्दन्त्यो दावतर्षिता: ॥२॥


अजा: गाव: महिष्य:-च
the she goats, cows and she buffaloes
निर्विशन्त्य: वनात् वनम्
entering from forest to forest
इषीका-अटवीम् निर्विविशु:
in a rushes' thicket entered,
क्रन्दन्त: दाव-तर्षिता:
wailing, by heat thirsty

The she goats, cows and she buffaloes entering from forest to forest entered a thicket of rushes, wailing, distressed by thirst because of the heat.


तेऽपश्यन्त: पशून् गोपा: कृष्णरामादयस्तदा ।

जातानुतापा न विदुर्विचिन्वन्तो गवां गतिम् ॥३॥


ते-अपश्यन्त: पशून् गोपा:
they, not seeing the cattle, the cowherds
कृष्ण-राम-आदय:-तदा
Krishna Raama and others, then,
जात-अनुतापा: न विदु:-
became distressed, did not know
विचिन्वन्त: गवाम् गतिम्
though searching, of the cows the position

Krishna Raama and other cowherd boys not seeing their cattle became very distressed. Even though they searched for them, they could not know the position of the cows.


तृणैस्तत्खुरदच्छिन्नैर्गोष्पदैरङ्कितैर्गवाम् ।

मार्गमन्वगमन् सर्वे नष्टाजीव्या विचेतस: ॥४॥


तृणै:-तत्-खुर-दच्छिन्नै:-
by the grass (eaten), their hoofs marks
गोष्पदै:-अङ्कितै:-गवाम्
of the cows' feet marked, the cows'
मार्गम्-अन्वगमन् सर्वे
path following, all (of them)
नष्ट-आजीव्या: विचेतस:
lost livelihood, were perturbed

They followed the path of the cows by the grass chewed by them and the marks of the hooves of the cow's legs, very much perturbed at the thought of having lost the means of their livelihood.


मुञ्जाटव्यां भ्रष्टमार्गं क्रन्दमानं स्वगोधनम् ।

सम्प्राप्य तृषिता: श्रान्तास्ततस्ते संन्यवर्तयन् ॥५॥


मुञ्जा-अटव्याम् भ्रष्ट-मार्गम्
in the rushes thicket, lost way
क्रन्दमानम् स्व-गो-धनम्
wailing, own cattle wealth
सम्प्राप्य तृषिता: श्रान्ता:-
finding, thirsty fatigued,
तत:-ते संन्यवर्तयन्
then they led them back

They found their own wealth of cattle who had lost their way, in the thicket of rushes, and were wailing with thirst and exhaustion, and they led them back.


ता आहूता भगवता मेघगम्भीरया गिरा ।

स्वनाम्नां निनदं श्रुत्वा प्रतिनेदु: प्रहर्षिता: ॥६॥


ता: आहूता: भगवता
they, called by The Lord
मेघ-गम्भीरया गिरा
with cloud like deep voice
स्व-नाम्नाम् निनदम्
own names' sound
श्रुत्वा प्रतिनेदु: प्रहर्षिता:
hearing, responded over joyed

The Lord called them in a cloud like deep voice, by their names. They responded, over joyed to hear the sound of their own names.


तत: समन्ताद् वनधूमकेतुर्यदृच्छयाभूत् क्षयकृद् वनौकसाम् ।

समीरित: सारथिनोल्बणोल्मुकैर्विलेलिहान: स्थिरजङ्गमान् महान् ॥७॥


तत: समन्तात् वन-धूमकेतु:-
then, all around, a wild fire
यदृच्छया-अभूत्
by providence broke out
क्षय-कृत् वनौकसाम्
destroyer of the forest inhabitants
समीरित: सारथिन:-
by the wind enhanced
उल्बण-उल्मुकै:-विलेलिहान:
with fierce (tongue like) flames, lapped up
स्थिर-जङ्गमान् महान्
the immobile and mobile the great

Just then, by providence, a great wild fire broke out, the destroyer of the inhabitants of the forest. It was enhanced by the wind, and with its tongue like fierce flames lapped up all the immobile and the mobile beings.


तमापतन्तं परितो दवाग्निं गोपाश्च गाव: प्रसमीक्ष्य भीता: ।

ऊचुश्च कृष्णं सबलं प्रपन्ना यथा हरिं मृत्युभयार्दिता जना: ॥८॥


तम्-आपतन्तम् परित:
that, advancing on all sides,
दवाग्निम् गोपा:-च गाव:
the wild fire, the Gopas and the cows
प्रसमीक्ष्य भीता:
watching, in distress
ऊचु:-च कृष्णम् सबलम्
said and to Krishna with Balaraama
प्रपन्ना यथा हरिम्
shelter seek as of Shree Hari
मृत्यु-भयात्-अर्दिता: जना:
from death's fear dismayed people

As the Gopas and the cows watched the wild fire advancing from all sides, they were in distress, and seeking shelter, said to Krishna and Balaraama, just as people dismayed at the time of death seek shelter of Shree Hari.


कृष्ण कृष्ण महावीर हे रामामितविक्रम ।

दावाग्निना दह्यमानान् प्रपन्नांस्त्रातुमर्हथ: ॥९॥


कृष्ण कृष्ण महावीर
Krishna! O Krishna! O mighty Hero!
हे राम-अमित-विक्रम
O Raama! of undiminished prowess
दावाग्निना दह्यमानान्
from the wild fire, burning
प्रपन्नान्-त्रातुम्-अर्हथ:
and seeking shelter (in You both), to protect be pleased

'Krishna! O Krishna! O mighty Hero! O Raama! of undiminished prowess, do be pleased to protect us, from the wild fire, as we are burning and seek shelter in You both.'


नूनं त्वद्बान्धवा: कृष्ण न चार्हन्त्यवसीदितुम् ।

वयं हि सर्वधर्मज्ञ त्वन्नाथास्त्वत्परायणा: ॥१०॥


नूनम् त्वत्-बान्धवा: कृष्ण
certainly, Your friends, O Krishna!
न च-अर्हन्ति-अवसीदितुम्
not and deserve to be oppressed
वयम् हि सर्व-धर्मज्ञ
we indeed, of (You) the all righteousness knower
त्वत्-नाथा:-त्वत्-परायणा:
You the protector, You the ultimate refuge

O Krishna, indeed we, Your relations and friends do not deserve to be oppressed. You are The Knower of all righteousness, and are our Protector and the ultimate refuge.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
वचो निशम्य कृपणं बन्धूनां भगवान् हरि: ।

निमीलयत मा भैष्ट लोचनानीत्यभाषत ॥११॥


वच: निशम्य कृपणम्
words hearing helpless
बन्धूनाम् भगवान् हरि:
of the friends, The All-mighty Shree Hari
निमीलयत मा भैष्ट
close, do not fear,
लोचनानि-इति-अभाषत
the eyes, this said

The All-mighty Shree Hari, heard these helpless words of His friends, and said, 'Do not fear, close your eyes,' thus.


तथेति मीलिताक्षेषु भगवानग्निमुल्बणम् ।

पीत्वा मुखेन तान् कृच्छ्राद् योगाधीशो व्यमोचयत् ॥१२॥


तथा-इति मीलित-अक्षेषु
'So be it', with closed eyes,
भगवान्-अग्निम्-उल्बणम्
The Lord, the fire fierce
पीत्वा मुखेन तान् कृच्छ्रात्
drank with mouth, them from peril
योगाधीश: व्यमोचयत्
The Yoga Master rescued

'So be it', they closed their eyes. The Lord drank the fierce fire with His mouth, and The Master of Yoga rescued them from peril.


ततश्च तेऽक्षीण्युन्मील्य पुनर्भाण्डीरमापिता: ।

निशाम्य विस्मिता आसन्नात्मानं गाश्च मोचिता: ॥१३॥


तत:-च ते-अक्षीणि-उन्मील्य
after that, and they eyes opening
पुन:-भाण्डीरम्-आपिता:
again Bhaandeera near brought
निशाम्य विस्मिता: आसन्-
seeing were amazed were
आत्मानम् गा:-च मोचिता:
being themselves cows and saved

After that, when they opened their eyes, they were amazed to see themselves and the cows brought near the Bhaandeera tree, and saved from the fire.


कृष्णस्य योगवीर्यं तद् योगमायानुभावितम् ।

दावाग्नेरात्मन: क्षेमं वीक्ष्य ते मेनिरेऽमरम् ॥१४॥


कृष्णस्य योग-वीर्यम् तत्
Krishna's Yoga prowess that,
योग-माया-अनुभावितम्
Yoga's potency experiencing
दावाग्ने:-आत्मन: क्षेमम्
from the wild fire, themselves safe
वीक्ष्य ते मेनिरे-अमरम्
seeing, they considered (Him) to be immortal

They saw the prowess of Krishna's Yoga and the potency of His Yoga, and finding themselves to be safe, they considered Him to be immortal.


गा: सन्निवर्त्य सायाह्ने सहरामो जनार्दन: ।

वेणुं विरणयन् गोष्ठमगाद् गोपैरभिष्टुत: ॥१५॥


गा: सन्निवर्त्य सायाह्ने
the cows driving back in the evening
सह-राम: जनार्दन:
with Balaraama of the people The Solicitor
वेणुम् विरणयन् गोष्ठम्-
flute playing to Vraja,
अगात् गोपै:-अभिष्टुत:
returned, by the Gopas extolled

In the evening The Solicitor of the people, Krishna, along with Balaraama, drove the cows back to Vraja, as They played the flute and were extolled by the Gopas.


गोपीनां परमानन्द आसीद् गोविन्ददर्शने ।

क्षणं युगशतमिव यासां येन विनाभवत् ॥१६॥


गोपीनाम् परम-आनन्द
of the Gopis was supreme joy
आसीद् गोविन्द-दर्शने
by having Govinda's sight
क्षणम् युग-शतम्-इव
a moment, Yugas hundred like
यासाम् येन विना-अभवत्
whose, Whom without became

Having the sight of Govinda the Gopis experienced supreme joy, without Whom one moment was like a hundred Yugas for them.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशम स्कन्धे दावाग्निपानं नाम एकोनविंश: अध्याय: ॥१९॥


Thus ends the nineteenth discourse entitled, 'Shree Krishna swallows up a wild fire (again),' in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
