श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
तयोस्तदद्भुतं कर्म दावाग्नेर्मोक्षमात्मन: ।

गोपा: स्त्रीभ्य: समाचख्यु: प्रलम्बवधमेव च ॥१॥


तयो:-तत्-अद्भुतम् कर्म
of Them that strange deed
दावाग्ने:-मोक्षम्-आत्मन:
from the wild fire protection of themselves
गोपा: स्त्रीभ्य: समाचख्यु:
the Gopas to the women well narrated
प्रलम्ब-वधम्-एव च
Pralamba slaying also and

The Gopas in detail related to the Vraja women the deeds of Them both, their protection from the wild fire and also the slaying of Pralamba the demon.


गोपवृद्धाश्च गोप्यश्च तदुपाकर्ण्य विस्मिता: ।

मेनिरे देवप्रवरौ कृष्णरामौ व्रजं गतौ ॥


गोप-वृद्धा:-च गोप्य:-च
the Gopa elders, and the Gopis and,
तत्-उपाकर्ण्य विस्मिता:
that hearing, amazed,
मेनिरे देव-प्रवरौ
concluded, (Them) the gods foremost
कृष्ण-रामौ व्रजम् गतौ
Krishna and Balaraama to Vraja, having come

The elders among the cowherds and the cowherd women too, were amazed to hear all this, and concluded that Balaraama and Krishna were two foremost gods who had come to Vraja.


तत: प्रावर्तत प्रावृट् सर्वसत्त्वसमुद्भवा ।

विद्योतमानपरिधिर्विस्फूर्जितनभस्तला ॥३॥


तत: प्रावर्तत प्रावृट्
then, set in rainy season
सर्व-सत्त्व-समुद्भवा
of all creatures breeding
विद्योतमान-परिधि:-
(with) bright circles (round the Sun and Moon)
विस्फूर्जित-नभ:-तला:
thundering of the skies

Then, the rainy season set in, the breeding time for all creatures. With it there were bright circles around the Sun and the Moon and thundering of the skies.


सान्द्रलीलाम्बुदैर्व्योम सविद्युत्स्तनयित्नुभि: ।

अस्पष्टज्योतिराच्छन्नं ब्रह्मेव सगुणं बभौ ॥४॥


सान्द्र-लील-अम्बुदै:-व्योम
densely overcast with clouds the sky,
सविद्युत्-स्तनयित्नुभि:
with lightening flashing
अस्पष्ट-ज्योति:-आच्छन्नम्
dimmed luminaries, obscured
ब्रह्म-एव सगुणम् बभौ
Brahman Himself with the Gunas became

The sky was over cast with dense clouds, the lightening flashed in the sky, The luminaries were dimmed and obscured, the sky looked like Brahman Himself shone with the three Gunas.


अष्टौ मासान् निपीतं यद् भूम्याश्चोदमयं वसु ।

स्वगोभिर्मोक्तुमारेभे पर्जन्य: काल आगते ॥५॥


अष्टौ मासान् निपीतम् यत्
for eight months drawn that
भूम्या:-च-उदमयम् वसु
from the earth and water as wealth
स्व-गोभि:-मोक्तुम्-आरेभे
by own rays to release started,
पर्जन्य: काले आगते
King like, as Time came

When the opportune Time came, The Sun, like a vigilant king, started to release on the earth, the wealth in the form of water which it had drawn from it, for eight months.


तडित्वन्तो महामेघाश्चण्डश्वसनवेपिता: ।

प्रीणनं जीवनं ह्यस्य मुमुचु: करुणा इव ॥६॥


तडित्वन्त: महा-मेघा:-
endowed with lightening, great clouds
चण्ड-श्वसन-वेपिता:
by tempestuous winds enthused
प्रीणनम् जीवनम् हि-अस्य
delightful life giving (water), indeed its
मुमुचु: करुणा इव
showered compassion like

The huge clouds endowed with lightening, enthused by tempestuous winds, showered life giving delightful water, like compassion.


तप: कृशा देवमीढा आसीद् वर्षीयसी मही ।

यथैव काम्यतपसस्तनु: सम्प्राप्य तत्फलम् ॥७॥


तप: कृशा देवमीढा
by heat shrunk, by heaven drenched
आसीत् वर्षीयसी मही
became, swelled the earth
यथा-एव काम्य-तपस:-
just as the desired by austerities,
तनु: सम्प्राप्य तत्-फलम्
the body, realizing its fruits

The earth which had shrunk due to heat swelled, when drenched by the rain from heaven, just like a man's body is emaciated by austerities, and regains stoutness when it realizes the fruit of the austerities.


निशामुखेषु खद्योतास्तमसा भान्ति न ग्रहा: ।

यथा पापेन पाखण्डा न हि वेदा: कलौ युगे ॥८॥


निशा-मुखेषु खद्योता:-
at night's approach, fire flies
तमसा भान्ति न ग्रहा:
in the dark shine, not the planets
यथा पापेन पाखण्डा:
just as by sin the heresies,
न हि वेदा: कलौ युगे
not indeed the Vedas in Kali yuga

At the approach of the night, the fire flies shine and not the planets, just as in the Kali yuga, the heresies flourish and not the Vedas.


श्रुत्वा पर्जन्यनिनदं मण्डूका व्यसृजन् गिर: ।

तूष्णीं शयाना: प्राग् यद्वद् ब्राह्मणा नियमात्यये ॥९॥


श्रुत्वा पर्जन्य-निनदम्
hearing the clouds' rumbling
मण्डूका: व्यसृजन् गिर:
the frogs let out croaks
तूष्णीम् शयाना: प्राक् यत्-
silently hibernating before, which
वत् ब्राह्मणा: नियम-अत्यये
like Braahmana (boys) daily routine having completed

The frogs who were silently hibernating before, let out croaks on hearing the rumbling of the clouds, just as the Braahmana boys having completed their daily routine, start the recitation of the Vedas on the call of the preceptor.


आसन्नुत्पथवाहिन्य: क्षुद्रनद्योऽनुशुष्यती: ।

पुंसो यथास्वतन्त्रस्य देहद्रविणसम्पद: ॥१०॥


आसन्-उत्पथ-वाहिन्य:
became over flowing
क्षुद्र-नद्य:-अनुशुष्यती:
small rivers, which were drying up
पुंस: यथा स्वतन्त्रस्य
of men just as undisciplined
देह-द्रविण-सम्पद:
body, wealth resources

The small rivers, which were drying up, started to over flow, just as the bodily and wealth resources of undisciplined men flow in the wrong direction.


हरिता हरिभि: शष्पैरिन्द्रगोपैश्च लोहिता: ।

उच्छिलीन्ध्रकृतच्छाया नृणां श्रीरिव भूरभूत् ॥११॥


हरिता हरिभि: शष्पै:-
green, by green grass,
इन्द्रगोपै:-च लोहिता:
by Indragopas and crimson
उच्छिलीन्ध्र कृत-छाया
by mushrooms rendered shaded,
नृणाम् श्री:-इव भू:-अभूत्
of the kings army like, the earth became

The earth became green by the green grass, crimson by the Indragopas insects, and was rendered shaded by the mushrooms, and looked like the army of kings with various colours.


क्षेत्राणि सस्यसम्पद्भि: कर्षकाणां मुदं ददु: ।

धनिनामुपतापं च दैवाधीनमजानताम् ॥१२॥


क्षेत्राणि सस्य-सम्पद्भि:
the fields with crops wealth,
कर्षकाणाम् मुदम् ददु:
of the farmers delight gave
धनिनाम्-उपतापम् च
to the rich agony and
दैव-आधीनम्-अजानताम्
in Providence control not knowing

The fields with the wealth of crops gave delight to the farmers and caused agony to the envious rich, because they do not know that all is in the control of Providence.


जलस्थलौकस: सर्वे नववारिनिषेवया ।

अबिभ्रद् रुचिरं रूपं यथा हरिनिषेवया ॥१३॥


जल-स्थल-औकस: सर्वे
of water and land inhabitants, all
नव-वारि-निषेवया
by new water use
अबिभ्रत् रुचिरम् रूपम्
projected beautiful form
यथा हरि-निषेवया
just as by Shree Hari serving

All the inhabitants of water and land exhibited new fresh look by the use of new rain water, just like a devotee by his service to Shree Hari.


सरिद्भि: सङ्गत: सिन्धुश्चुक्षुभे श्वसनोर्मिमान् ।

अपक्वयोगिनश्चित्तं कामाक्तं गुणयुग् यथा ॥१४॥


सरिद्भि: सङ्गत: सिन्धु:-
by the rivers united the ocean
चुक्षुभे श्वसन-ऊर्मिमान्
became turbulent, by wind having waves
अपक्व-योगिन:-चित्तम्
of an immature Yogi's mind
कामाक्तम् गुणयुग् यथा
desire tainted by objects contacted like

The ocean, united by the rivers and rough by the waves generated by wind, became turbulent, just as the mind of an immature Yogi, tainted by desire, is, when contacted by sense objects.


गिरयो वर्षधाराभिर्हन्यमाना न विव्यथु: ।

अभिभूयमाना व्यसनैर्यथाधोक्षजचेतस: ॥१५॥


गिरय: वर्ष-धाराभि:-
mountains by rain showers
हन्यमाना: न विव्यथु:
struck, do not suffer
अभिभूयमाना व्यसनै:-
distressed by calamities,
यथा-अधोक्षज-चेतस:
just as, on Vishnu fixed minded

The mountains were not agitated by the strike of the rain water, just as a person whose mind is fixed on Lord Vishnu, is not distressed by onslaught of calamities.


मार्गा बभूवु: सन्दिग्धास्तृणैश्छन्ना ह्यसंस्कृता: ।

नाभ्यस्यमाना: श्रुतयो द्विजै: कालहता इव ॥१६॥


मार्गा: बभूवु: सन्दिग्धा:
the paths became untraceable
तृणै:-छन्ना:-हि-असंस्कृता:
by grass covered and unkempt
न-अभ्यस्यमाना: श्रुतय:
not practicing the texts (of the Vedas)
द्विजै: काल-हता इव
by the Braahmanas, by Time lost like

The paths became untraceable, being unkempt and covered by overgrown grass, just like the text of the Vedas are lost to memory, in time, if not practiced by the Braahmanas.


लोकबन्धुषु मेघेषु विद्युतश्चलसौहृदा: ।

स्थैर्यं न चक्रु: कामिन्य: पुरुषेषु गुणिष्विव ॥१७॥


लोक-बन्धुषु मेघेषु
in the world friendly clouds
विद्युत:-चल सौहृदा:
lightening flashes, (though) dear
स्थैर्यम् न चक्रु: कामिन्य:
constancy did not give desirous women
पुरुषेषु गुणिषु-इव
to men of virtues like

The clouds are beneficial to the people. The flashes of lightening though dear to them did not give them constancy, like the desirous women are not constant with virtuous men.


धनुर्वियति माहेन्द्रं निर्गुणं च गुणिन्यभात् ।

व्यक्ते गुणव्यतिकरेऽगुणवान् पुरुषो यथा ॥१८॥


धनु:-वियति माहेन्द्रम्
the bow, in the sky, of Indra (the rainbow)
निर्गुणम् च गुणिनि-अभात्
without a string and with sound shone
व्यक्ते गुण-व्यतिकरे-
in the creation, by the Gunas dispensing
अगुणवान् पुरुषो यथा
The Guna-less Person just as

In the sound endowed sky, the rainbow, the bow of Indra, shone without a string, just as in this manifest world, the Guna-less Primary Person shines, by the dispensing of the three Gunas.


न रराजोडुपश्छन्न: स्वज्योत्स्नाराजितैर्घनै: ।

अहंमत्या भासितया स्वभासा पुरुषो यथा ॥१९॥


न रराज-उडुप:-छन्न:
did not shine Moon, covered
स्व-ज्योत्स्ना-राजितै:-घनै:
by own moon-shine beautified clouds
अहम्-मत्या भासितया
by ego minded covered
स्वभासा पुरुष: यथा
self illumined Jiva just as

The Moon covered by the clouds beautified by its beams, did not shine, just as the self-illumined soul does not shine covered by the ego sense.


मेघागमोत्सवा हृष्टा: प्रत्यनन्दञ्छिखण्डिन: ।

गृहेषु तप्ता निर्विण्णा यथाच्युतजनागमे ॥२०॥


मेघ-आगम-उत्सवा: हृष्टा:
at the clouds' appearing festival, delighted,
प्रत्यनन्दन्-शिखण्डिन:
rejoiced the peacocks
गृहेषु तप्ता: निर्विण्णा:
in the houses by agonized, oppressed,
यथा-अच्युत-जन-आगमे
just as on Sri Krishna's devotees coming

The peacocks delighted rejoiced, and rejoiced, at the appearance of the festival of the clouds, just as the householders, agonized by the worldly oppressions, feel relieved by the advent of Shri Krishna's devotees.


पीत्वाप: पादपा: पद्भिरासन्नानात्ममूर्तय: ।

प्राक्क्षामास्तपसा श्रान्ता यथा कामानुसेवया ॥२१॥


पीत्वा-आप: पादपा: पद्भि:-
imbibing water, the trees, by roots,
आसन्-नाना-आत्म-मूर्तय:
became various self forms
प्राक्-क्षामा:-तपसा श्रान्ता:
before shrunk, by austerities emaciated,
यथा काम-अनुसेवया
just as, by pleasures pursuing

The trees which had shrunk in the summers became healthy and took many forms, full of foliage and blossoms, by imbibing the rain water by their roots, just as men emaciated by austerities, become robust when they pursue pleasures.


सरस्वशान्तरोधस्सु न्यूषुरङ्गापि सारसा: ।

गृहेष्वशान्तकृत्येषु ग्राम्या इव दुराशया: ॥२२॥


सरसु-अशान्त- रोधस्सु न्यूषु:-
in lakes disturbed banks lived
अङ्ग-अपि सारसा:
O Dear! Even the cranes
गृहेषु-अशान्त-कृत्येषु
in the houses, in disturbing activities (involved)
ग्राम्या: इव दुराशया:
sensuous (men) like, ill-minded

O Dear Pareekshit! even though the banks of the lakes were disturbed and thorny, the cranes continued to live there, just as ill-minded sensuous householders keep to their houses, involved in disturbing activities.


जलौघैर्निरभिद्यन्त सेतवो वर्षतीश्वरे ।

पाखण्डिनामसद्वादैर्वेदमार्गा: कलौ यथा ॥२३॥


जल-औघै:-निरभिद्यन्त:
the water torrential, brake
सेतव: वर्षति-ईश्वरे
bridges, when raining Indra
पाखण्डिनाम्-असत्-वादै:
by hypocrites' false assertions
वेद-मार्गा: कलौ यथा
Veda's paths in Kali just as

Indra showering torrential rains, the bridges and dams are breached, by the voluminous water, just as the path of virtue indicated by the Vedas are destroyed by the false assertions of hypocrites, in Kaliyuga.


व्यमुञ्चन् वायुभिर्नुन्ना भूतेभ्योऽथामृतं घना: ।

यथाऽऽशिषो विश्पतय: काले काले द्विजेरिता: ॥२४॥


व्यमुञ्चन् वायुभि:-नुन्ना
released by the wind, driven
भूतेभ्य:-अथ-अमृतं घना:
for the beings, then, nectar, the clouds,
यथा-आशिष: काले काले
just as desired boons, from time to time
द्विज-ईरिता:
by the Braahmanas prompted

Driven by the winds, the clouds released nectar like water on the beings, just as, prompted by the Braahmanas, from time to time, the rulers give desired boons to the subjects.


एवं वनं तद् वर्षिष्ठं पक्वखर्जूरजम्बूमत् ।

गोगोपालैर्वृतो रन्तुं सबल: प्राविश्धरि: ॥२५॥


एवम् वनम् तत् वर्षिष्ठम्
thus, the forest, that flourishing
पक्व-खर्जूर-जम्बूमत्
with ripe dates and berries,
गो-गोपालै:-वृत: रन्तुम्
by cows and cowherds surrounded, to live
सबल: प्राविशत्-हरि:
with Balaraama, entered Shree Hari

Thus, into that flourishing forest, of Vrindaavana, with ripe dates and berries, Shree Hari entered with Balaraama, to sport, surrounded by cows and cowherds.


धेनवो मन्दगामिन्य ऊधोभारेण भूयसा ।

ययुर्भगवताऽऽहूता द्रुतं प्रीत्या स्नुतस्तनी: ॥२६॥


धेनव: मन्द-गामिन्य:
the cows slowly walking
ऊध:-भारेण भूयसा
by the udders' weight great,
ययु:-भगवता-आहूता:
went by The Lord called
द्रुतम् प्रीत्या स्नुत-स्तनी:
in speed, out of love, showering (milk) from the udders

The cows were going slowly, due to the great weight of the udders. When they were called by The Lord, they went in speed, out of love, shedding milk from their udders as they went on the way.


वनौकस: प्रमुदिता वनराजीर्मधुच्युत: ।

जलधारा गिरेर्नादानासन्ना ददृशे गुहा: ॥२७॥


वन-औकस: प्रमुदिता:
the forest inhabitants were delighted
वन-राजी:-मधु-च्युत:
the forest trees honey dripping
जल-धारा गिरे:-नादान्-
water streams, on the mountains murmuring,
आसन्ना: ददृशे गुहा:
near by were seen caves

He saw that the forest inhabitants were delighted, the trees of the forest were dripping with honey, the streams of water on the mountains murmured and many caves were seen near by.


क्वचित् वनस्पतिक्रोडे गुहायां चाभिवर्षति ।

निर्विश्य भगवान् रेमे कन्दमूलफलाशन: ॥२८॥


क्वचित् वनस्पति-क्रोडे
sometimes, in the trees lap
गुहायाम् च-अभिवर्षति
in the caves and when it rained
निर्विश्य भगवान् रेमे
entered, The Lord played
कन्द-मूल-फल-आशन:
bulbs, roots, and fruits eating

Sometimes, when it rained, The Lord sat in the lap of the trees or went into the caves. He sported eating bulbs, roots and fruits.


दध्योदनं समानीतं शिलायां सलिलान्तिके ।

सम्भोजनीयैर्बुभुजे गोपै: सङ्कर्षणान्वित: ॥२९॥


दधि-ओदनम् समानीतम्
curds rice brought
शिलायाम् सलिल-अन्तिके
on the rock water near
सम्भोजनीयै:-बुभुजे गोपै:
with other edibles, ate with the cowherds
सङ्कर्षण-अन्वित:
Balaraama along with

Sitting on the rock, near the water, He, along with Balaraama, ate curd and rice, which He had brought from home, with other accompaniments, with the other cowherds.


शाद्वलोपरि संविश्य चर्वतो मीलितेक्षणान् ।

तृप्तान् वृषान् वत्सतरान् गाश्च स्वोधोभरश्रमा: ॥३०॥


शाद्वल-उपरि संविश्य
on the grass sitting
चर्वत: मीलित-ईक्षणान्
chewing the cud, closed eyes
तृप्तान् वृषान् वत्सतरान्
the gratified bulls, calves,
गा:-च स्व-ओधोभर-श्रमा:
cows and own udders weight weary with

He saw the gratified bulls, calves, and cows weary with the weight of own udders, sitting on the green meadows, chewing the cud, with their eyes closed.


प्रावृट्श्रियं च तां वीक्ष्य सर्वभूतमुदावहाम् ।

भगवान् पूजयाञ्चक्रे आत्मशक्त्युपबृंहिताम् ॥३१॥


प्रावृट्-श्रियम् च ताम् वीक्ष्य
rainy (season's) beauty, and that perceiving
सर्व-भूतम्-उदावहाम्
all the beings delighting
भगवान् पूजयान्-चक्रे
The Lord welcomed all
आत्म-शक्ति-उपबृंहिताम्
own energy enhancing

The Lord, perceiving the splendour of the rainy season, which was the extending of His own enrapturing energy, giving delight to all beings, welcomed them all.


एवं निवसतोस्तस्मिन् रामकेशवयोर्व्रजे ।

शरत् समभवत् व्यभ्रा स्वच्छाम्ब्वपरुषानिला ॥३२॥


एवम् निवसत:-तस्मिन्
thus, living in that,
राम-केशवयो:-व्रजे
of Balaraama and Keshava in Vraja,
शरत् समभवत् ब्यभ्रा
autumn set in, clear skied,
स्वच्छा-अम्बु-अपरुषा-अनिला
clean, water, gentle breeze

in this manner, as Balaraama and Keshava lived in Vraja, autumn season set in, with clear skies, crystal clear water and gentle breeze.


शरदा नीरजोत्पत्त्या नीराणि प्रकृतिं ययु: ।

भ्रष्टानामिव चेतांसि पुनर्योगनिषेवया ॥३३॥


शरदा नीरज-उत्पत्त्या
by autumnal lotuses blooming,
नीराणि प्रकृतिम् ययु:
the waters transparency attained
भ्रष्टानाम्-इव चेतांसि
of the strayed like minds,
पुन:-योग-निषेवया
again by Yoga practicing

By the blooming of the Autumnal lotuses, the waters regained the transparency, just like the minds of the strayed people regain purity by again practicing Yoga.


व्योम्नोऽब्दं भूतशाबल्यं भुव: पङ्कमपां मलम् ।

शरञ्जहाराश्रमिणां कृष्णे भक्तिर्यथाशुभम् ॥३४॥


व्योम्न:-अब्दम् भूत-शाबल्यम्
of the skies, the clouds, of beings the congestion
भुव: पङ्कम्-अपाम् मलम्
of earth the dirt, of waters the turbidity
शरत्-जहार-आश्रमिणाम्
Autumn drove away, of (people of) four stages of life,
कृष्णे-भक्ति:-यथा-शुभम्
in Krishna devotion, just as auspicious

The advent of Autumn drove away the clouds from the skies, the congestion of the beings, the dirt from the earth and the turbidity from the water, just as the auspicious devotion to Krishna ends all evils of the people of the four aashramas, (stages of life).


सर्वस्वं जलदा हित्वा विरेजु: शुभ्रवर्चस: ।

यथा त्यक्तैषणा: शान्ता मुनयो मुक्तकिल्बिषा ॥३५॥


सर्वस्वम् जलदा हित्वा
all of theirs', the clouds, having given away,
विरेजु: शुभ्र-वर्चस:
shone with bright lustre
यथा त्यक्त-ईषणा:
just as, giving up desires
शान्ता: मुनय: मुक्त-किल्बिषा
the peaceful sages are freed of sins

The clouds having given away all their wealth of water, shone with bright lustre, just as the ascetics having given up all desires, are peaceful, freed of sins.


गिरयो मुमुचुस्तोयं क्वचिन्न मुमुचु: शिवम् ।

यथा ज्ञानामृतं काले ज्ञानिनो ददते न वा ॥३६॥


गिरय: मुमुचु:-तोयम्
the mountains released water,
क्वचित्-न मुमुचु: शिवम्
sometimes, did not release pure
यथा ज्ञान-अमृतम् काले
just as the knowledge nectar, at times
ज्ञानिन: ददते न वा
the wise give, not or

Sometimes the mountains released pure water and sometimes did not release it, just as the wise give the nectar of knowledge at times, or at times do not do so.


नैवाविदन् क्षीयमाणं जलं गाधजलेचरा: ।

यथाऽऽयुरन्वहं क्षय्यं नरा मूढा: कुटुम्बिन: ॥३७॥


न-एव-अविदन् क्षीयमाणम्
not even knew, the receding
जलम् गाध-जलेचरा:
water, of shallow water creatures
यथा-आयु:-अन्वहम् क्षय्यम्
just as age every day shortening,
नरा: मूढा: कुटुम्बिन:
men, stupid householders

The creatures of the shallow waters do not even know the receding of the waters, just as the stupid householder men do not know the shortening of their age everyday.


गाधवारिचरास्तापमविन्दञ्छरदर्कजम् ।

यथा दरिद्र: कृपण: कुटुम्ब्यविजितेन्द्रिय: ॥३८॥


गाध-वारिचरा:-तापम्-
shallow water creatures, heat
अविन्दन्-शरद्-अर्कजम्
experienced, Autumn sun generated
यथा दरिद्र: कृपण:
just as a poor helpless
कुटुम्बि-अविजित-इन्द्रिय:
householder, of uncontrolled senses

The creatures living in the shallow waters experienced the heat generated by the Autumn Sun, just as a poor helpless householder with uncontrolled senses, experiences difficulties.


शनै शनैर्जहु: पङ्कं स्थलान्यामं च वीरुध: ।

यथाहंममतां धीरा: शरीरादिष्वनात्मसु ॥३९॥


शनै: शनै:-जहु: पङ्कम्
gradually gave up moss
स्थलानि-आमम् च वीरुध:
the places, rawness and the plants
यथा-अहम्-ममताम् धीरा:
just as ego and mine-ness the wise,
शरीर-आदिषु-अनात्मसु
in the body and others, (which are) not the self

Gradually, the places gave up the moss, and the plants gave up the rawness, just as the wise give up the ego and mine-ness, which are not the self.


निश्चलाम्बुरभूत्तूष्णीं समुद्र: शरदागमे ।

आत्मन्युपरते सम्यङ्मुनिर्व्युपरतागम: ॥४०॥


निश्चल-अम्बु:-अभूत्-
motion-less water became
तूष्णीम् समुद्र: शरद्-आगमे
quiet the ocean on Autumn's advent
आत्मनि-उपरते सम्यक्-
when the mind is at peace, completely,
मुनि:-व्युपरत-आगम:
an ascetic gives up rituals

On the advent of Autumn, the waters became motionless and the ocean became quiet, just as when an ascetic's mind is completely at peace, he gives up rituals.


केदारेभ्यस्त्वपोऽगृह्णन् कर्षका दृढसेतुभि: ।

यथा प्राणै: स्रवज्ज्ञानं तन्निरोधेन योगिन: ॥४१॥


केदारेभ्य:-तु-अप:-अगृह्णन्
from the fields indeed water checked
कर्षका: दृढ-सेतुभि:
the farmers by strong dams
यथा प्राणै: स्रवत्-ज्ञानम्
just as with the senses flowing out wisdom
तत्-निरोधेन योगिन:
by its control the Yogis

The farmers checked the water flowing out of the fields by building strong dams, just as the Yogis preserve the wisdom flowing out through the senses, by controlling the senses.


शरदर्कांशुजांस्तापान् भूतानामुडुपोऽहरत् ।

देहाभिमानजं बोधो मुकुन्दो व्रजयोषिताम् ॥४२॥


शरद्-अर्क-अंशुजान्-तापान्
the Autumnal sun's ray's generated heat
भूतानाम्-उडुप:-अहरत्
of living beings the Moon alleviated
देह-अभिमान-जम्-बोध:
of the body identification born (suffering) knowledge
मुकुन्द: व्रज-योषिताम्
Mukunda, (suffering of separation) of Vraja Gopis

The suffering of the living beings, caused by the heat generated by the Autumnal sun, was alleviated by the Moon, just as the suffering of the soul, caused by the identification with the body, is alleviated by self-knowledge, and the suffering of the Gopis of Vraja, caused by separation, is alleviated by Shree Krishna.


खमशोभत निर्मेघं शरद्विमलतारकम् ।

सत्त्वयुक्तं यथा चित्तं शब्दब्रह्मार्थदर्शनम् ॥४३॥


खम्-अशोभत नि:-मेघम्
the sky was beautified cloud-less
शरद्-विमल-तारकम्
in Autumn with bright stars
सत्त्व-युक्तम् यथा चित्तम्
Sattva comprising of, just as the intellect
शब्द-ब्रह्म-अर्थ-दर्शनम्
of the Vedas sayings purport revealing

The sky in Autumn was beautified without the clouds, and the bright stars shining, just as the intellect of the ascetic comprising of Sattva Guna, reveal the import of the Veda's sayings.


अखण्डमण्डलो व्योम्नि रराजोडुगणै: शशी ।

यथा यदुपति: कृष्णो वृष्णिचक्रावृतो भुवि ॥४४॥


अखण्ड-मण्डल: व्योम्नि
in the undivided extensive firmament
रराज-उडु-गणै: शशी
shone, with the stars' cluster, the Moon,
यथा यदुपति: कृष्ण:
like the Yadus' ruler, Shree Krishna
वृष्णि-चक्र-आवृत: भुवि
by the Yadu clan surrounded, on the earth

In the wide extensive firmament, the Moon shone with the cluster of stars, like the ruler of the Yadus, Shree Krishna shone surrounded by the Yadu clan, on the earth.


आश्लिष्य समशीतोष्णं प्रसूनवनमारुतम् ।

जनास्तापं जहुर्गोप्यो न कृष्णहृतचेतस: ॥४५॥


आश्लिष्य सम-शीत-उष्णम्
embracing the equal cool and hot
प्रसून-वन-मारुतम्
of the blossomed forest breeze
जना:-तापम् जहु:-
of people the anguish took away
गोप्य: न कृष्ण-हृत-चेतस:
of the Gopis did not, by Krishna stolen minds

The cool and hot breeze blowing through the forest full of blossoms took away the anguish of the people but not of the Gopis of Vraja, because their minds were stolen by Shree Krishna.


गावो मृगा खगा नार्य: पुष्पिण्य: शरदाभवन् ।

अन्वीयमाना: स्ववृषै: फलैरीशक्रिया इव ॥४६॥


गाव: मृगा: खगा: नार्य:
the cows, the she-deers, the birds, and women
पुष्पिण्य: शरद्-अभवन्
ready to conceive in Autumn became
अन्वीयमाना: स्व-वृषै:
being followed by their partners
फलै:-ईश-क्रिया इव
by the fruits of The Lord's activity like

In the Autumn season, the cows, the she-deers, the birds and women became ready to conceive, and were followed by their partners, just as the activities towards the Lord are followed by their results.


उदहृष्यन् वारिजानि सूर्योत्थाने कुमुद् विना ।

राज्ञा तु निर्भया लोका यथा दस्यून् विना नृप ॥४७॥


उदहृष्यन् वारिजानि
bloomed the lotuses,
सूर्य-उत्थाने कुमुद् विना
on Sun-rise, water lilies except
राज्ञा तु निर्भया: लोका:
by the king indeed, fearless the people
यथा दस्यून् विना नृप
like thieves except, O King!

O King! The lotuses bloomed on the rising of Sun, except the water lilies, just as by the coming of the king people become fearless except for the thieves.


पुरग्रामेष्वाग्रयणैरैन्द्रियैश्च महोत्सवै: ।

बभौ भू: पक्वसस्याढ्या कलाभ्यां नितरां हरे: ॥४८॥


पुर-ग्रामेषु-आग्रयणै:-
in the towns and villages, by the sacrifices
इन्द्रियै:-च महोत्सवै:
for Indra and by festivals
बभौ भू: पक्व-सस्य-आढ्या
became the earth with ripe corn plenty
कलाभ्याम् नितराम् हरे:
by the two manifestations of Shree Hari

In the towns and villages, festivals were held for the sacrifice to Indra etc., by which the earth was full of plenty of ripe corn, as also by the two manifestations of Shree Hari, that of Shree Krishna and Balaraama.


वणिङ्मुनिनृपस्नाता निर्गम्यार्थान् प्रपेदिरे ।

वर्षरुद्धा यथा सिद्धा: स्वपिण्डान् काल आगते ॥४९॥


वणिक्-मुनि-नृप-स्नाता:
traders, sages, kings, and students
निर्गम्य-अर्थान् प्रपेदिरे
returned to their works went,
वर्ष-रुद्धा: यथा सिद्धा:
by the rain deterred, like the realized men
स्व-पिण्डान् काल आगते
to their appropriate status, on Time coming (proper)

The traders, sages, kings, and students, who were deterred by the rains, returned to their respective works, like the realized people in proper time attain their appropriate status.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे प्रावृट्शरद्वर्णनं नाम विंश: अध्याय: ॥२०॥


Thus ends the twentieth discourse entitled 'A description of the Rains and Autumn', in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
