श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इत्थं शरत्स्वच्छजलं पद्माकरसुगन्धिना ।
न्यविशद् वायुना वातं सगोगोपालकोऽच्युत: ॥१॥
इत्थम् शरद्-स्वच्छ-जलम्
thus, by Autumn purified water
पद्माकर-सुगन्धिना
by lotuses perfumed
न्यविशद् वायुना वातम्
entered by the breeze, the breeze,
स-गो-गोपालक:-अच्युत:
with the cows and cowherds, The Immortal Lord
Thus, The Immortal Lord, with the cows and cowherds, entered the forest with its waters purified by Autumn and with the breeze perfumed by the breeze from the lotuses.
कुसुमितवनराजिशुष्मिभृङ्गद्विजकुलघुष्टसर: सरिन्महीध्रम् ।
मधुपतिरवगाह्य चारयन् गा: सहपशुपालबलश्चुकूज वेणुम् ॥२॥
कुसुमित-वनराजि-शुष्मि-भृङ्ग-
in the blossoming trees, intoxicated bees,
द्विज-कुल-घुष्ट-सर:
bird flocks, resonating the lake
सरित्-महीध्रम्
rivers and mountains
मधुपति:-अवगाह्य चारयन्
of sweetness The Lord, entering, grazing
गा: सह-पशुपाल-बल:-
the cows, with the cowherds and Balaraama
चुकूज वेणुम्
and played the flute
In that forest with blossoming trees, the lakes resonating with humming of intoxicated bees and chirping of flock of birds, and rivers and mountains, The Lord of Madhu entered, with the cows and cowherds and Balaraama, playing the flute.
तद् व्रजस्त्रिय आश्रुत्य वेणुगीतं स्मरोदयम् ।
काश्चित् परोक्षं कृष्णस्य स्वसखीभ्योऽन्ववर्णयन् ॥३॥
तत् व्रज-स्त्रिय: आश्रुत्य
that, the Vraja women hearing,
वेणु-गीतम् स्मर-उदयम्
the flute melody, enkindling love,
काश्चित् परोक्षम् कृष्णस्य
some, in solitude of Krishna
स्व-सखीभ्य:-अन्ववर्णयन्
to own friends described
Hearing that love enkindling melody of the flute, some of the women of Vraja, described Krishna to their companions, in solitude.
तद् वर्णयितुमारब्धा: स्मरन्त्य: कृष्णचेष्टितम् ।
नाशकन् स्मरवेगेन विक्षिप्तमनसो नृप ॥४॥
तद् वर्णयितुम्-आरब्धा:
the beginning to describe
स्मरन्त्य: कृष्ण-चेष्टितम्
remembering Krishna's deeds,
न-अशकन् स्मर-वेगेन
were not able, by love's force
विक्षिप्त-मनस: नृप
deluded minded, O King!
O King! Just as they began to describe, they remembered Krishna's deeds, and with a mind deluded by the force of love, they were not able to do so.
वर्हापीडं नटवरवपु: कर्णयो: कर्णिकारं,
बिभ्रद् वास: कनककपिशं वैजयन्तीं च मालाम् ।
रन्ध्रान् वेणोरधरसुधया पूरयन् गोपवृन्दै-
र्वृन्दारण्यं स्वपदरमणं प्राविशद् गीतकीर्ति: ॥५॥
वर्हा-आपीडम् नट-वर-वपु:
peacock feather adorned with, actor excellent embodied
कर्णयो: कर्णिकारम्
in the ears Karnikaara flowers
बिभ्रद् वास: कनक-कपिशम्
exhibiting clothes golden yellow
वैजयन्तीम् च मालाम्
of sylvan flowers and a garland
रन्ध्रान् वेणो:-अधर-सुधया
holes of the flute, with lower lip's nectar
पूरयन् गोप-वृन्दै:-वृन्दा-अरण्यम्
filling, with the Gopa groups, the Vrindaa forest
स्व-पद-रमणम्
by His own feet made charming
प्राविशद् गीत-कीर्ति:
entered, sung the glory
He was adorned with peacock feathers, embodied as an excellent actor, exhibiting golden yellow clothes and a garland of sylvan flowers, He filled the holes of the flute with the nectar of His lips. As He entered the forest of Vrindaa, making it charming with His own feet, with the groups of Gopas, they sang His glories.
इति वेणुरवं राजन् सर्वभूतमनोहरम् ।
श्रुत्वा व्रजस्त्रिय: सर्वा वर्णयन्त्योऽभिरेभिरे ॥६॥
इति वेणु-रवम् राजन्
thus the flute melody, O King!
सर्व-भूत-मन:-हरम्
of the all beings mind captivating,
श्रुत्वा व्रज-स्त्रिय: सर्वा:
hearing, Vraja's women all
वर्णयन्त्य:-अभिरेभिरे
describing embraced (Him mentally)
O King! All the women of Vraja, hearing that melody of the flute, which was mind captivating for all the living beings, as they describing it, embraced Him mentally.
गोप्य: ऊचु: -
The Gopis said -
अक्षण्वतां फलमिदं न परं विदाम: सख्य: पशूननु विवेशयतोर्वयस्यै: ।
वक्त्रं व्रजेशसुतयोरनुवेणु जुष्टं यैर्वा निपीतमनुरक्तकटाक्षमोक्षम् ॥७॥
अक्षण्वताम् फलम्-इदम्
those who have eyes, reward this
न परम् विदाम: सख्य:
not another know, with friends,
पशून्-अनु विवेशयत:-वयस्यै:
cows, followed entering, with equal aged
वक्त्रम् व्रजेश-सुतयो:-
the face of Vraja's ruler’s son
अनुवेणु जुष्टम् यै:-वा निपीतम्-
with the flute playing, by whom or is feasted
अनुरक्त-कटाक्ष-मोक्षम्
with loving side glances casting
We do not know of a reward for those who have eyes, other than getting to feast on the face of the son of The Ruler of Vraja, entering Vraja, followed by cattle and equal aged playmates, playing on the flute, as He casts loving side glances.
चूतप्रवालबर्हस्तबकोत्पलाब्जमालानुपृक्तपरिधानविचित्रवेषौ ।
मध्ये विरेजतुरलं पशुपालगोष्ट्यां रङ्गे यथा नटवरौ क्व च गायमानौ ॥८॥
चूत-प्रवाल-बर्ह-स्तबक-
mango tender leaves, peacock feathers,
उत्पल-अब्ज-माला-अनुपृक्त-
lotus and lily garland, tucked
परिधान-विचित्र-वेषौ
garments strange appearances
मध्ये विरेजतु:-अलम्
in middle sitting gorgeous, very,
पशुपाल-गोष्ट्याम् रङ्गे
in the cowherds' circles, on stage
यथा नटवरौ क्व च गायमानौ
like great actors, sometimes and singing
Their garments had strange appearance, tucked with tender leaves of the mango tree, peacock feathers, wearing garlands of lotuses and lilies. They did not look less gorgeous sitting in the midst of the circle of cowherds, but looked like two expert actors on stage.
गोप्य: किमाचरदयं कुशलं स्म वेणुर्दामोदराधरसुधामपि गोपिकानाम् ।
भुङ्क्ते स्वयं यदवशिष्टरसं ह्रदिन्यो हृष्यत्त्वचोऽश्रुमुमुचुस्तरवो यथाऽऽर्या: ॥९॥
गोप्य: किम्-आचरत्-अयम्
O Gopis! what deed this
कुशलम् स्म वेणु:-दामोदर-अधर-
good do, the flute, of Daamodara's lips
सुधाम्-अपि गोपिकानाम्
nectar even of the Gopis
भुङ्क्ते स्वयम् यत्-अवशिष्ट
enjoys himself, that left over
रसम् ह्रदिन्य: हृष्यत्-
sweetness, the rivers were overjoyed
तु-अच:-अश्रु-मुमुचु:-
indeed with honour tears shed
तरव: यथा-आर्या:
the (Bamboo) trees, like great people
O Gopis! What meritorious deed did the flute do, to enjoy the nectar of Daamodara's (Krishna's) lips, which is a right of the Gopis? The left over sweetness, of the lips, by which the rivers are overjoyed, is enjoyed by the Bamboo trees, who are delighted like the great people seeing the merit of their wards.
वृन्दावनं सखि भुवो वितनोति कीर्तिं यद् देवकीसुतपदाम्बुजलब्धलक्ष्मि ।
गोविन्दवेणुमनुमत्तमयूरनृत्यं प्रेक्ष्याद्रिसान्वपरतान्यसमस्तसत्त्वम् ॥१०॥
वृन्दावनम् सखि भुव:
Vrindaavana, My friend, to the world
वितनोति कीर्तिम् यत् देवकी-सुत-
brings glory, in that, Devaki's son
पद-अम्बुज-लब्ध-लक्ष्मि
feet lotus has attained the wealth
गोविन्द-वेणुम्-अनु-
Govinda's flute (hearing) after
मत्त-मयूर-नृत्यम् प्रेक्ष्य-अद्रिसानु-
intoxicated peacock dance watching, on mountain peak
अपरत-अन्य-समस्त-सत्त्वम्
stopped, other all self consciousness
'My friend! Vrindaavana has brought glory to the earth, in that, it has attained the wealth of the lotus feet of Devaki's son. By hearing the flute of Govinda, the peacocks dance in intoxication, by watching which all the other creatures on the peak of the mountain abstain from any activity and loose their self consciousness.
धन्या: स्म मूढमतयोऽपि हरिण्य एता या नन्दनन्दनमुपात्तविचित्रवेषम् ।
आकर्ण्य वेणुरणितं सहकृष्णसारा: पूजां दधुर्विरचितां प्रणयावलोकै: ॥११॥
धन्या: स्म मूढ-मतय:-अपि
blessed are dim-witted though
हरिण्य: एता: या: नन्द-
the (female) deers these who, Nanda's
नन्दनम्-उपात्त-विचित्र-वेषम्
delight (Krishna), finding in strange attire
आकर्ण्य वेणु-रणितम्
hearing the flute melody
सह-कृष्ण-सारा: पूजाम् दधु:-
with the black antelope, worship offered,
विरचिताम् प्रणय-अवलोकै:
performing by loving glances
Though dim-witted, these female deers are blessed, in that, they finding the delight of Nanda, Shree Krishna in strange attire also, by hearing the melody of the flute, along with the black antelope offered worship, performing it by loving glances.
कृष्णं निरीक्ष्य वनितोत्सवरूपशीलं श्रुत्वा च तत्क्वणितवेणुविचित्रगीतम् ।
देव्यो विमानगतय: भ्रश्यत्प्रसूनकबरा मुमुहुर्विनीव्य: ॥१२॥
कृष्णम् निरीक्ष्य वनिता-
Krishna seeing, for the females
उत्सव-रूप-शीलम् श्रुत्वा च
festival the form and grace, hearing and
तत्-क्वणित-वेणु-विचित्र-गीतम्
that strain, of flute strange tune
देव्य: विमान-गतय:
the celestial ladies in the air-cars going
स्मर-नुन्नसारा:
by love losing presence of mind
भ्रश्यत्-प्रसून-कबरा:
loosened flowers from hair plaits
मुमुहु:-विनीव्य:
were deluded with displaced clothes
Krishna, and the sight of His form and grace, are a festival for the female's eyes. Hearing the strains of the strange tune of the flute, the celestial ladies going in the air cars were deluded, by love losing presence of mind, the flowers loosening from their plaits and their clothes getting displaced.
गावश्च कृष्णमुखनिर्गतवेणुगीतपीयूषमुत्तभितकर्णपुटै: पिबन्त्य: ।
शावा: स्नुतस्तनपय: कवला: स्म तस्थुर्गोविन्दमात्मनि दृशाश्रुकला: स्पृशन्त्य: ॥१३॥
गाव:-च कृष्ण-मुख-निर्गत-
cows and from Krishna mouth coming
वेणु-गीत-पीयूषम्-
flute melody nectar
उत्तभित-कर्ण-पुटै: पिबन्त्य:
with standing up ear cups drinking
शावा: स्नुत-स्तन-
the calves flowing from the udder
पय: कवला स्म तस्थु:
milk mouth full became stationary
गोविन्दम्-आत्मनि
Govinda, by their own
दृशा-अश्रु-कला: स्पृशन्त्य:
eyes tears flowing touching
The cows drank the melody of the flute coming from Krishna's flute with the cups of their erect ears. The calves remained stationary with their mouths full of the milk dripping from the udders, touching (embracing) Govinda by their eyes full of joyous tears.
प्रायो बताम्ब विहगा मुनयो वनेऽस्मिन् कृष्णेक्षितं तदुदितं कलवेणुगीतम् ।
आरुह्य ये द्रुमभुजान् रुचिरप्रवालान् शृण्वन्त्यमीलितदृशो विगतान्यवाच: ॥१४॥
प्राय: बत-अम्ब
many a time, indeed, O Mother!
विहगा: मुनय: वने-अस्मिन्
the birds sages in forest this
कृष्ण-ईक्षितम् तत्-
Krishna watching, His
उदितम् कल-वेणु-गीतम्
words in beautiful flute sung
आरुह्य ये द्रुम-
perched who on the trees
भुजान् रुचिर-प्रवालान्
branches with charming tender leaves
शृण्वन्ति-अमीलित-दृश:
hear, with open eyes,
विगत-अन्य-वाच:
barring (all) other sounds
Indeed, O Mother! Many a times the birds in this forest are as good as sages. They get to watch Krishna with unwinking eyes, and to hear His words spoken through the beautiful strains of His flute, barring all other sounds, perched as they are on the branches of the trees with tender leaves.
नद्यस्तदा तदुपधार्य मुकुन्दगीतमावर्तलक्षितमनोभवभग्नवेगा: ।
आलिङ्गनस्थगितमूर्मिभुजैर्मुरारेर्गृह्णन्ति पादयुगलं कमलोपहारा: ॥१५॥
नद्य:-तदा तत्-उपधार्य
the rivers, then, His hearing
मुकुन्द-गीतम्-आवर्त-लक्षित-
Mukunda's melody, by eddies denoting
मन:-भव-भग्न-वेगा:
heart's feeling's deterred the flow
आलिङ्गन-स्थगितम्-
by embrace paused
ऊर्मि-भुजै:-मुरारे:-
waves as arms of Muraari
गृह्णन्ति पाद-युगलम्
holds on the feet pair
कमल-उपहारा:
lotus presenting
Then, the rivers hearing that melody of Mukunda, by the rush of the feeling of the heart, the flow of the waters deterred, denoted by the eddies, pause to embrace the pair of feet of Muraari, with the waves as their arms, offering lotuses as gifts.
दृष्ट्वाऽऽतपे व्रजपशून् सह रामगोपै: सञ्चारयन्तमनुवेणुमुदीरयन्तम् ।
प्रेमप्रवृद्ध उदित: कुसुमावलीभि: सख्युर्व्यधात् स्ववपुषाम्बुद आतपत्रम् ॥१६॥
दृष्ट्वा-आतपे व्रज-पशून् सह
seeing in the Sun, Vraja's cattle with
राम-गोपै: सञ्चारयन्तम्-अनु
Balaraama and the Gopas, grazing, along with
प्रेम-प्रवृद्ध उदित:
by love enhanced increased
कुसुम-अवलीभि: सख्यु:-व्यधात्
flowers bunches, O Friends! Created
स्व-वपुषा-अम्बुद आतपत्रम्
by his own body, the cloud, umbrella
O Friends! Seeing Shree Krishna grazing the cattle of Vraja in the company of Balaraama and the Gopas, and also playing the flute, the cloud, with the upsurge of love, made an umbrella out of his own body and showered clusters of flowers on Him.
पूर्णा: पुलिन्द्य उरुगायपदाब्जरागश्रीकुङ्कमेन दयितास्तनमण्डितेन ।
तद्दर्शनस्मररुजस्तृणरूषितेन लिम्पन्त्य आननकुचेषु जहुस्तदाधिम् ॥१७॥
पूर्णा: पुलिन्द्य:
fulfilled of purpose are the bheela women
उरुगाय-पद-अब्ज-राग-
of Krishna's feet lotus pollen
श्री-कुङ्कमेन
the charming saffron paste
दयिता-स्तन-मण्डितेन
of the women's breast besmeared
तत्-दर्शन-स्मर-
by His sight enamoured
रुज:-तृण-रूषितेन
the plight, the grass covered
लिम्पन्त्य: आनन-कुचेषु
smear on face and breasts
जहु:-तत्-आधिम्
took away that agony
The Bheela women are fulfilled of purpose, who took away the plight caused by their being enamoured at the sight of Shree Krishna, by smearing on their own faces and breasts, the charming saffron smeared on the breasts of the Gopis, and on the blades of grass from the feet of Shree Krishna, by His treading there.
हन्तायमद्रिरबला हरिदासवर्यो यद् रामकृष्णचरणस्पर्शप्रमोद: ।
मानं तनोति सहगोगणयोस्तयोर्यत् पानीयसूयवसकन्दरकन्दमूलै: ॥१८॥
हन्त-अयम्-अद्रि:-अबला
Ah! This mountain, O Fair ones!
हरि-दास-वर्य: यत्
God's devotees favourite, in that
राम-कृष्ण-चरण-स्पर्श-प्रमोद:
Balaraama and Krishna's feet's' touch pleasure,
मानम् तनोति सह-गो-गणयो:-
honour extends (by) with the cows and cowherds
तयो:-यत् पानीय-सूयवस-
both because water, grass,
कन्दर-कन्द-मूलै:
caves, roots and fruits (providing)
O Fair ones! This mountain is the best of The Lord's devotees, because it gets the pleasure of the touch of the feet of Balaraama and Shree Krishna both. It extends its honour to them, the cows and the cowherds, by providing water, grass, caves, roots and fruits.
गा गोपकैरनुवनं नयतोरुदारवेणुस्वनै: कलपदैस्तनुभृत्सु सख्य: ।
अस्पन्दनं गतिमतां पुलकस्तरूणां निर्योगपाशकृतलक्षणयोर्विचित्रम् ॥१९॥
गा: गोपकै:-अनुवनम् नयतो:-
cows, with cowherds, from forest to forest herding
उदार-वेणु-स्वनै: कल-पदै:-
by loud flute notes, low notes
तनुभृत्सु सख्य:
among the embodied, O Friends!
अस्पन्दनम् गतिमताम्
the motionless and those with motion
पुलक:-तरूणाम् निर्योग-
horripilation of trees, cord (to tie the hind legs of the cows)
पाश-कृत-लक्षणयो:-विचित्रम्
a snare (for unruly cows), made distinction strange
O Friends! They both, Balaraama and Shree Krishna herded the cows from forest to forest by playing high and low notes on their flutes, which caused horripilation to the motionless trees and to the streams with motion. And strangely, for the embodied beings, they made a distinction by carrying the (Niryoga) cord, to tie the hind legs of the cows when milking them, and the cord to ensnare the unruly cows.
एवंविधा भगवतो या वृन्दावनचारिण: ।
वर्णयन्त्यो मिथो गोप्य: क्रीडास्तन्मयतां ययु: ॥२०॥
एवम्-विधा भगवत: या
such like, of The Lord which
वृन्दावन-चारिण:
of Vrindaavana the residents
वर्णयन्त्य: मिथ: गोप्य:
describing amongst themselves, the Gopis
क्रीडा:-तन्मयताम् ययु:
sporting engrossed became
The Gopis, describing amongst themselves, such sports of The Lord, residing in Vrindaavana, became mentally engrossed in those very same sports.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमे स्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे वेणुगीतं नाम एकविंश: अध्याय: ॥२१॥
Thus ends the twenty-first discourse entitled 'A song inspired by the (Lord's) Flute,' in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
