श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
हेमन्ते प्रथमे मासि नन्दव्रजकुमारिका: ।
चेरुर्हविष्यं भुञ्जाना: कात्यायन्यर्चनव्रतम् ॥१॥
हेमन्ते प्रथमे मासि
in Hemant (season), first month
नन्द-व्रज-कुमारिका: चेरु:-
of Nanda's Vraja, the maids observed
हविष्यम् भुञ्जाना:
to the fire offering food eating
कात्यायनी-अर्चन-व्रतम्
of Kaatyaayanee worship vow
In the first month of the Hemant season, the maids of Vraja, ruled by Nanda, observed the vow of worship of Kaatyaayanee by eating food fit for sacrifice to the fire.
आप्लुत्याम्भसि कालिन्द्या जलान्ते चोदितेऽरुणे ।
कृत्वा प्रतिकृतिं देवीमानर्चुर्नृप सैकतीम् ॥२॥
आप्लुत्य-अम्भसि कालिन्द्या:
bathing in the water of Yamuna,
जल-अन्ते च-उदिते-अरुणे
on river bank and on rising of the Sun
कृत्वा प्रतिकृतिम् देवीम्-
making an image, The Goddess
आनर्चु:-नृप सैकतीम्
worshipped, O King! of sand
O King! They bathed in the water of the river Yamuna, and, on rising of the Sun, on the river's bank made an image of the Goddess with sand and worshipped Her.
गन्धैर्माल्यै: सुरभिभिर्बलिभिर्धूपदीपकै: ।
उच्चावचैश्चोपहारै: प्रवालफलतण्डुलै: ॥३॥
गन्धै:-माल्यै: सुरभिभि:-
with sandal paste, garlands, scents,
बलिभि:-धूप-दीपकै:
oblations, incenses and lights
उच्च-अवचै:-च-उपहारै:
big and small and gifts
प्रवाल-फल-तण्डुलै:
tender leaves fruits and rice
They worshipped Her with sandal paste, fragrant flower garlands, oblations, incenses, lights, big and small gifts, tender leaves, fruits and rice.
कात्यायनि महामाये महायोगिन्यधीश्वरि ।
नन्दगोपसुतं देवि पतिं मे कुरु ते नम: ।
इति मन्त्रं जपन्त्यस्ता: पूजां चक्रु: कुमारिका: ॥४॥
कात्यायनि महामाये
O Kaatyaayanee! The great deluding potency!
महायोगिनि-अधीश्वरि
The great Yogic power! The Supreme Ruler!
नन्द-गोप-सुतम् देवि
Nanda cowherd's son, O Goddess
पतिम् मे कुरु ते नम:
husband my make, to You (I) bow
इति मन्त्रम् जपन्त्य:- ता:
this Mantra repeating, they
पूजां चक्रु: कुमारिका:
worship performed the maidens
The maidens performed the worship repeating the Mantra, saying, ' O Goddess Kaatyaayanee! O great deluding potency! O Possessor of infinite Yogic powers! O Supreme Ruler! We bow down to You, do make the cowherd Nanda's son, Shree Krishna, our husband.'
एवं मासं व्रतं चेरु: कुमार्य: कृष्णचेतस: ।
भद्रकालीं समानर्चुर्भूयान्नन्दसुत: पति: ॥५॥
एवम् मासम् व्रतम् चेरु:
thus for one month vow observed
कुमार्य: कृष्ण-चेतस:
the maidens, with Krishna in mind
भद्रकालीम् समान्-अर्चु:-
Bhadrakaali with equal fervour, worshipped
भूयात्-नन्द-सुत: पति:
may be Nanda's son, husband
Thus, the maidens, with Krishna in mind, observed the vow for one month. With equal fervour they worshipped The Goddess Bhadrakaali, saying,' May Nanda's son be our husband.'
उषस्युत्थाय गोत्रै: स्वैरन्योन्याबद्धबाहव: ।
कृष्णमुच्चैर्जगुर्यान्त्य: कालिन्द्यां स्नातुमन्वहम् ॥६॥
उषसि-उत्थाय गोत्रै: स्वै:-
in early morning getting up, names own (taking)
अन्योन्य-आबद्ध-बाहव:
each other holding arms
कृष्णम्-उच्चै:-जगु:-यान्त्य:
Krishna loudly praising, while going
कालिन्द्याम् स्नातुम्-अन्वहम्
in Yamuna to bathe, every day
They would get up early in the morning, taking their own names, holding each others arms, loudly praised Shree Krishna, as they went to bathe in the Yamuna river every day.
नद्यां कदाचिदागत्य तीरे निक्षिप्य पूर्ववत् ।
वासांसि कृष्णं गायन्त्यो विजह्रु: सलिले मुदा ॥७॥
नद्याम् कदाचित्-आगत्य
to the river once coming to
तीरे निक्षिप्य पूर्ववत्
the bank, throwing like before,
वासांसि कृष्णम् गायन्त्य:
the clothes, Krishna singing about
विजह्रु: सलिले मुदा
sported in the water with delight
Once, they reached the river they left their clothes on the bank like always, and with delight sported in the water as they sang of the glories of Shree Krishna.
भगवांस्तदभिप्रेत्य कृष्णो योगेश्वरेश्वर: ।
वयस्यैरावृतस्तत्र गतस्तत्कर्मसिद्धये ॥८॥
भगवान्-तत्-अभिप्रेत्य
The Lord, that knowing,
कृष्ण: योगेश्वर-ईश्वर:
Krishna, of masters of Yoga The Lord,
वयस्यै:-आवृत:-तत्र गत:-
by companions surrounded, there went
तत्-कर्म-सिद्धये
their purpose to fulfil
The Lord Krishna, The Lord of the masters of Yoga, coming to know of this, surrounded by His companions, went there to fulfil their purpose.
तासां वासांस्युपादाय नीपमारुह्य सत्वर: ।
हसद्भि: प्रहसन् बालै: परिहासमुवाच ह ॥९॥
तासाम् वासांसि-उपादाय
their clothes taking
नीपम्-आरुह्य सत्वर:
a tree climbing quickly
हसद्भि: प्रहसन् बालै:
with the laughing and joking boys
परिहासम्-उवाच ह
laughingly said this
He took their clothes and quickly climbed a Kadamba tree. With all the boys laughing and joking, He said laughingly,…
अत्रागत्याबला: कामं स्वं स्वं वास: प्रगृह्यताम् ।
सत्यं ब्रवाणि नो नर्म यद् यूयं व्रत कर्शिता: ॥१०॥
अत्र-आगत्य-अबला: कामम्
here, coming, O Fair Ones! if so desire,
स्वम् स्वम् वास: प्रगृह्यताम्
each own clothes take
सत्यम् ब्रवाणि नो नर्म यद्
truth (I) say, no joke, because
यूयम् व्रत कर्शिता:
you all are by vow exhausted
'O Fair Ones! Come here take your own clothes if you desire. I am saying the truth and not joking, because you all are exhausted by observing the vow.'
न मयोदितपूर्वं वा अनृतं तदिमे विदु: ।
एकैकश: प्रतीच्छध्वं सहैवोत सुमध्यमा: ॥११॥
न मया-उदित-पूर्वम् वा
not by Me before, or
अनृतम् तत्-इमे विदु:
lie (spoken), that these (boys) know
एक-एकश: प्रतीच्छध्वम्
one by one, take away
सह-एव-उत सुमध्यमा:
together only indeed, O Slender waisted Ones!
'O Slender waisted Ones! These boys know that I have never spoken a lie before. You may take away the garments one by one, or indeed all of you together.'
तस्य तत् क्ष्वेलितं दृष्ट्वा गोप्य: प्रेमपरिप्लुता: ।
व्रीडिता: प्रेक्ष्य चान्योन्यं जातहासा न निर्ययु: ॥१२॥
तस्य तत् क्ष्वेलितम् दृष्ट्वा
His that prank seeing
गोप्य: प्रेम-परिप्लुता:
the Gopis with love were overwhelmed
व्रीडिता: प्रेक्ष्य च-अन्योन्यम्
shyly looked and at each other
जात-हासा: न निर्ययु:
smilingly, did not come out
Seeing that prank of His, the Gopis were overwhelmed with love. They shyly looked at each other smilingly, but did not come out of the water.
एवं ब्रुवति गोविन्दे नर्मणाऽऽक्षिप्तचेतस: ।
आकण्ठमग्ना: शीतोदे वेपमानास्तमब्रुवन् ॥१३॥
एवम् ब्रुवति गोविन्दे
so saying, by Govinda
नर्मणा-आक्षिप्त-चेतस:
by the prank, enraptured minded
आकण्ठ-मग्ना: शीत-उदे
till neck immersed in cold water,
वेपमाना:-तम्-अब्रुवन्
shivering, to Him said
On Govinda's saying so, the minds of the Gopis were all the more enraptured by the prank. Immersed in cold water, neck deep and shivering, they said to Him.
मानयं भो: कृथास्त्वां तु नन्दगोपसुतं प्रियम् ।
जानीमोऽङ्ग व्रजश्लाघ्यं देहि वासांसि वेपिता: ॥१४॥
मा-अनयम् भो: कृथा:-त्वाम् तु
no wrong, O! should be done, You indeed
नन्द-गोप-सुतम् प्रियम्
Nanda cowherd's son dear
जानीम:-अङ्ग व्रज-श्लाघ्यम्
we know, O Dear! by the Vraja People admired
देहि वासांसि वेपिता:
do give the garments, we shiver
O! no wrong should be done by You to us. O Dear One! We know that You are the dear son of Nanda the cowherd, and You are admired by the people of Vraja. Do give us our garments as we are shivering.
श्यामसुन्दर ते दास्य: करवाम तवोदितम् ।
देहि वासांसि धर्मज्ञ नो चेद् राज्ञे ब्रुवामहे ॥१५॥
श्यामसुन्दर ते दास्य:
’O Dark and beautiful! Your servants
करवाम तव-उदितम्
will do Your bidding
देहि वासांसि धर्मज्ञ
give the garments, O Knower of righteousness!
नो चेद् राज्ञे ब्रुवामहे
otherwise, to the king will report
'O Dark and Beautiful! We are Your servants, and will do Your bidding. O Knower of righteousness! Do give our garments, otherwise we will report to the king.
श्रीभगवान्-उवाच -
The Lord said -
भवत्यो यदि मे दास्यो मयोक्तं वा करिष्यथ ।
अत्रागत्य स्ववासांसि प्रतीच्छन्तु शुचिस्मिता: ॥१६॥
भवत्य: यदि मे दास्य:
you, if are My servants
मया-उक्तम् वा करिष्यथ
by Me said or do
अत्र-आगत्य स्व-वासांसि
here coming, own clothes
प्रतीच्छन्तु शुचि-स्मिता:
take back, O sweet smiling Ones!
'O sweet smiling Ones! If you all are My servants and will do My bidding, come here and take back your own clothes.'
ततो जलाशयात् सर्वा दारिका: शीतवेपिता: ।
पाणिभ्यां योनिमाच्छाद्य प्रोत्तेरु: शीतकर्शिता: ॥१७॥
तत: जल-आशयात् सर्वा:
then, from the water body, all
दारिका: शीत-वेपिता:
the maidens by cold shivering
पाणिभ्याम् योनिम्-आच्छाद्य
by the hands the private parts covering
प्रोत्तेरु: शीत-कर्शिता:
came out, by cold shrunk
Then, all the maidens came out from the water body, shivering with cold and covering their privy parts with their hands, shrunk with cold.
भगवानाह ता वीक्ष्य शुद्धभावप्रसादित: ।
स्कन्धे निधाय वासांसि प्रीत: प्रोवाच सस्मितम् ॥१८॥
भगवान्-आह ता: वीक्ष्य
The Lord said, them perceiving,
शुद्ध-भाव-प्रसादित:
with pure hearts pleased
स्कन्धे निधाय वासांसि
on the shoulder keeping the clothes,
प्रीत: प्रोवाच सस्मितम्
lovingly, said with a smile
The Lord, perceiving the pure hearted, as good as dead, put the clothes on His shoulder and said with a loving smile.
यूयं विवस्त्र यदपो धृतव्रता व्यगाहतैतत्तदु देवहेलनम् ।
बद्ध्वाञ्जलिं मूर्ध्न्यपनुत्तयेंऽहस: कृत्वा नमोऽधो वसनं प्रगृह्यताम् ॥१९॥
यूयम् विवस्त्र यत्-अप:
you all without clothes because, in the water,
धृत-व्रता: व्यगाहत-एतत्-
observing vow, took a dip, this
तत्-उत्-एव-हेलनम्
that indeed itself is insult
बद्ध्वा-अञ्जलिम् मूर्धनि-
joining hands, on the forehead touching,
अपनुत्तये-अंहस: कृत्वा
to rectify the sin, for the sake of,
नम:-अध: वसनम् प्रगृह्यताम्
bowing low, clothes take away
'In that, that you all were observing a vow, and took a dip in the water without clothes, that itself is an insult to the water god. To rectify that, join your palms and lifting them to the fore-head, bow low, and then take back your clothes.'
इत्यच्युतेनाभिहिता व्रजाबला मत्वा विवस्त्राप्लवनं व्रतच्युतिम् ।
तत्पूर्तिकामास्तदशेषकर्मणां साक्षात्कृतं नेमुरवद्यमृग् यत: ॥२०॥
इति-अच्युतेन-अभिहिता:
this, by The Immortal said,
व्रज-बाला: मत्वा विवस्त्र-
the Vraja maids, understanding, in nude
आप्लवनम् व्रत-च्युतिम्
bathing, of the vow violation,
तत्-पूर्तिकामा:-तत्-अशेष-
that to fulfil desiring, to That of all
कर्मणाम् साक्षात्-कृतम्-
the actions, the direct fruit Giver,
नेमु: अवद्यमृग् यत:
bowed, all sins are washed by which
When The Immortal Lord said this, the Vraja maids understood that they had violated their vow by bathing in the water without clothes. Wanting to complete that vow, they bowed to The Lord, The direct Giver of all the fruits of all the actions, by which all sins are washed.
तास्तथावनता दृष्ट्वा भगवान् देवकीसुत: ।
वासांसि ताभ्य: प्रायच्छत् करुणस्तेन तोषित: ॥२१॥
ता:-तथा-अवनता: दृष्ट्वा
them like that bowed seeing
भगवान् देवकी-सुत:
The Lord, Devaki's son
वासांसि ताभ्य: प्रायच्छत्
clothes theirs' returned,
करुण:-तेन तोषित:
The Compassionate, by that (act) satisfied
The Compassionate Lord, The Son of Devaki perceiving them bowed like that, was satisfied and returned their clothes to them.
दृढं प्रलब्धास्त्रपया च हापिता: प्रस्तोभिता: क्रीडनवच्च कारिता: ।
वस्त्राणि चैवापहृतान्यथाप्यमुं ता नाभ्यसूयन् प्रियसङ्गनिर्वृता: ॥२२॥
दृढम् प्रलब्धा:-त्रपया-च
badly deceived, of shame and
हापिता: प्रस्तोभिता:
stripped, laughed at,
क्रीडन-वत्-च कारिता:
puppets like made
वस्त्राणि च-एव-अपहृतानि-
clothes and also taken away,
अथ-अपि-अमुम् ता:-न-
then also, Him they did not
अभ्यसूयन् प्रिय-सङ्ग-निर्वृता:
condemn, with the beloved's company gratified
They were badly deceived, and stripped of shame, laughed at, made to rivet like puppets, their clothes taken away, even then, they did not find faults with Him, as they were gratified in the company of the beloved.
परिधाय स्ववासांसि प्रेष्ठसङ्गमसज्जिता: ।
गृहीतचित्ता नो चेलुस्तस्मिँल्लज्जायितेक्षणा: ॥२३॥
परिधाय स्व-वासांसि
putting on their clothes,
प्रेष्ठ-सङ्गम-सज्जिता:
beloved's company seeking
गृहीत-चित्ता: नो चेलु:-
enthralled minded did not move
तस्मिन्-लज्जायित-ईक्षणा:
in Him bashful eyes (placed)
They put on their clothes, their minds enthralled seeking the company of the beloved, their bashful eyes were fixed on Him.
तासां विज्ञाय भगवान् स्वपादस्पर्शकाम्यया ।
धृतव्रतानां संकल्पमाह दामोदरोऽबला: ॥२४॥
तासाम् विज्ञाय भगवान्
of them knowing The Lord,
स्व-पाद-स्पर्श-काम्यया
own feet to touch desiring
धृत-व्रतानाम् संकल्पम्-
observed the vow, the determination,
आह दामोदर:-अबला:
said Daamodara, to the maidens
The Lord, knowing that they had determined to observe the vow with the desire of touching His own feet, Daamodara, Krishna said to the maidens,…
संकल्पो विदित: साध्व्यो भवतीनां मदर्चनम् ।
मयानुमोदित: सोऽसौ सत्यो भवितुमर्हति ॥२५॥
संकल्प: विदित: साध्व्य:
determination, is known, O Dear Ladies!
भवतीनाम् मत्-अर्चनम्
Of you all of My worship
मया-अनुमोदित: स:-असौ
by Me agreed, that this,
सत्य: भवितुम्-अर्हति
true to happen deserves
O Dear ladies! I know the determination of you all, that you want to worship Me. I agree to that wish of yours as it deserves to materialize.
न मय्यावेशितधियां काम: कामाय कल्पते ।
भर्जिता क्वथिता धाना प्रायो बीजाय नेष्यते ॥२६॥
न मयि-आवेशित-धियाम्
not in Me, fixed minds
काम: कामाय कल्पते
desires to pleasure take
भर्जिता: क्वथिता: धाना:
roasted, boiled grain,
प्राय: बीजाय न-इष्यते
generally, to be sown do not remain
The minds which are fixed in Me, desires do not take them towards sensuous pleasures, just as roasted or boiled grain generally do not remain worthy of sowing.
याताबला व्रजं सिद्धा मयेमा रंस्यथ क्षपा: ।
यदुद्दिश्य व्रतमिदं चेरुरार्यार्चनं सती: ॥२७॥
यातु-अबला: व्रजम् सिद्धा:
'May You go, O damsels! to Vraja, fulfilled is purpose,
मया-इमा रंस्यथ क्षपा:
with Me in these will sport the nights,
यत्-उद्दिश्य व्रतम्-इदम्
which seeking vow this
चेरु:-आर्या-अर्चनम् सती:
undertook of The Goddess the worship, O virtuous Ones!'
'O Damsels! May you return to Vraja, what you seek, your purpose has been fulfilled. You will sport with Me in the coming nights, for which you undertook the vow of worship to The Goddess Kaatyaayanee.'
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इत्यादिष्टा भगवता लब्धकामा: कुमारिका: ।
ध्यायन्त्यस्तत्पदाम्भोजं कृच्छ्रान्निर्विविशुर्व्रजम् ॥२८॥
इति-आदिष्टा: भगवता
thus directed by The Lord
लब्ध-कामा: कुमारिका:
realizing their wish, the maidens
ध्यायन्त्य:-तत्-पद-अम्भोजम्
thinking of His feet lotuses
कृच्छ्रात्-निर्विविशु:-व्रजम्
with difficulty returned to Vraja
Thus directed by the Lord, the maidens, having almost realized their wish, with great difficulty returned to Vraja, thinking of His lotus feet.
अथ गोपै: परिवृतो भगवान् देवकीसुत: ।
वृन्दावनाद् गतो दूरं चारयन् गा: सहाग्रज: ॥२९॥
अथ गोपै: परिवृत:
after that, by the cowherds surrounded
भगवान् देवकी-सुत:
The Lord, Devaki's son,
वृन्दावनात् गत: दूरम्
from Vrindaavana went far
चारयन् गा: सह-अग्रज:
grazing the cows, with elder brother
After that, Devaki's son, The Lord, surrounded by the cowherds went far from Vrindaavana grazing the cows along with His elder brother, Balaraama.
निदाघार्कातपे तिग्मे छायाभि: स्वाभिरात्मन: ।
आतपत्रायितान् वीक्ष्य द्रुमानाह व्रजौकस: ॥३०॥
निदाघ-अर्क-आतपे तिग्मे
in the summer, sun heat scorching,
छायाभि: स्वाभि:-आत्मन:
by the shade of their own
आतपत्र-आयितान् वीक्ष्य
umbrella becoming like perceiving,
द्रुमान्-आह व्रजौकस:
the trees, said to Vraja inhabitants
The Lord, perceiving the trees taking on the role of umbrella by themselves providing shade, in the scorching heat of the summer Sun, said to the inhabitants of Vraja,…
हे स्तोककृष्ण हे अंशो श्रीदामन् सुबलार्जुन ।
विशालर्षभ तेजस्विन् देवप्रस्थ वरूथप ॥३१॥
हे स्तोककृष्ण हे अंशो
' O Stoka-Krishna! O Anshu!
श्रीदामन् सुबल-अर्जुन
Shree-daama, Subala, Arjuna,
विशाल-ऋषभ तेजस्विन्
Vishaalaa, Rishabha, Tejaswin,
देवप्रस्थ वरूथप
Devaprastha, Varoothapa,
' O Stoka-Krishna! O Anshu! Shree-daama, Subala, Arjuna, Vishaalaa, Rishabha, Tejaswin, Devaprastha, Varoothapa,….
पश्यतैतान् महाभागान् परार्थैकान्तजीवितान् ।
वातवर्षातपहिमान् सहन्तो वारयन्ति न: ॥३२॥
पश्यत-एतान् महा-भागान्
look at these, the very fortunate
पर-अर्थ-एकान्त-जीवितान्
for others' purpose solely living
वात-वर्ष-आतप-हिमान्
storm, rain, sun, snow,
सहन्त: वारयन्ति न:
bearing, protect us
Look at these, very fortunate trees, who live solely for others. They bear the storm, rain, summer heat and snow, and protect us from them.
अहो एषां वरं जन्म सर्वप्राण्युपजीवनम् ।
सुजनस्येव येषां वै विमुखा यान्ति नार्थिन: ॥३३॥
अहो एषाम् वरम् जन्म
O! of these is best the birth
सर्व-प्राणि-उपजीवनम्
of all the beings life giving
सुजनस्य-एव येषाम् वै
of the benevolent even, of whom indeed,
विमुखा: यान्ति न-अर्थिन:
disappointed go not desirous
O! Indeed, their lives are the best, as they are life giving to all living beings, just as a desirous person does not go disappointed when he seeks a benevolent person.
पत्रपुष्पफलच्छायामूलवल्कलदारुभि: ।
गन्धनिर्यासभस्मास्थितोक्मै: कामान् वितन्वते ॥३४॥
पत्र-पुष्प-फल-छाया-
(with) leaves, flowers, fruits, shade,
मूल-वल्कल-दारुभि:
roots, bark, wood,
गन्ध-निर्यास-भस्म-अस्थि-
smell, gum, ashes, coal,
तोक्मै: कामान् वितन्वते
sprouts, desires fulfil
They fulfil the desires with their leaves, flowers, fruits, shade, roots, bark, wood, smell, gum, ashes, coal, sprouts, etc.
एतावज्जन्मसाफल्यं देहिनामिह देहिषु ।
प्राणैरर्थैर्धियावाचा श्रेय एवाचरेत् सदा ॥३५॥
एतावत्-जन्म साफल्यम्
this alone of a birth is fruitfulness
देहिनाम्-इह देहिषु
of the embodied here, among the embodied
प्राणै:-अर्थै:-धिया वाचा
by life, wealth, intellect, speech,
श्रेय एव-आचरेत् सदा
good only may do always
Here, on this earth, this alone is the fruitfulness of the birth of an embodied person, that with his life, wealth, intellect and speech, he should always do good for other embodied creatures.
इति प्रवालस्तबकफलपुष्पदलोत्करै: ।
तरूणां नम्रशाखानां मध्येन यमुना गत: ॥३६॥
इति प्रवाल-स्तबक-
thus, with tender leaves, clusters,
फल-पुष्प-दल-उत्करै:
fruits, flowers bunches, bowing
तरूणाम् नम्र-शाखानाम्
trees, tender branches
मध्येन यमुना गत:
in the middle of Yamuna, He went
Thus, He went to Yamuna, in the middle of which the branches of trees were bent and were bowing with clusters of tender leaves, fruits, and bunches of flowers.
तत्र गा: पाययित्वाप: सुमृष्टा: शीतला: शिवा: ।
ततो नृप स्वयं गोपा: कामं स्वादु पपुर्जलम् ॥३७॥
तत्र गा: पाययित्वा-अप:
there, the cows making to drink water,
सुमृष्टा: शीतला: शिवा:
sweet, cool, and pure
तत: नृप स्वयम् गोपा:
then, O King! themselves, the cowherds,
कामम् स्वादु: पपु:-जलम्
to their hearts content, the tasty drank water
Then O King! Making the cows drink the sweet, cool and pure water, the cowherds themselves drank the tasty water to their hearts' content.
तस्या उपवने कामं चारयन्त: पशून् नृप ।
कृष्णरामावुपागम्य क्षुधार्ता इदमब्रुवन् ॥३८॥
तस्या: उपवने कामम्
in that grove, at will
चारयन्त: पशून् नृप
grazing the cows, O King!
कृष्ण-रामौ-उपागम्य

क्षुधा-आर्ता: इदम्-अब्रुवन्
with hunger troubled, this said
