श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इन्द्रस्तदाऽऽत्मन: पूजां विज्ञाय विहतां नृप ।
गोपेभ्य: कृष्णनाथेभ्यो नन्दादिभ्यश्चुकोप स: ॥१॥
इन्द्र:-तत्-आत्मन: पूजाम्
Indra, that his own worship,
विज्ञाय विहताम् नृप
knowing stopped, O King!
गोपेभ्य: कृष्ण-नाथेभ्य:
with the Gopas, Krishna their protector,
नन्द-आदिभ्य:-चुकोप स:
Nanda and others, became angry he
O King! Indra, coming to know that his own worship had been stopped, became angry on Nanda and other Gopas, whose protector was Shree Krishna.
गणं सांवर्तकं नाम मेघानां चान्तकारिणाम् ।
इन्द्र: प्राचोदयत् क्रुद्धो वाक्यं चाहेशमान्युत ॥२॥
गणम् सांवर्तकम् नाम
the host of Sanvartaka named
मेघानाम् च-अन्तकारिणाम्
clouds, and the destruction causing
इन्द्र: प्राचोदयत् क्रुद्ध:
Indra mobilized, enraged,
वाक्यम् च-आह-ईशमानी-उत
order and issued, ruler (himself) considering indeed
Indra, enraged, considering himself to be the ruler, mobilized the destruction causing host of clouds named Sanvartaka, and issued them the order,….
अहो श्रीमदमाहात्म्यं गोपानां काननौकसाम् ।
कृष्णं मर्त्यमुपाश्रित्य ये चक्रुर्देवहेलनम् ॥३॥
अहो श्री-मद-माहात्म्यम्
’Oh! Of wealth the pride of greatness
गोपानाम् कानन-औकसाम्
of the cowherds, of the forest dwellers,
कृष्णम् मर्त्यम्-उपाश्रित्य ये
Krishna the mortal, supported by, who
चक्रु:-देव-हेलनम्
have committed a diety's insult
' Oh! Look at the great pride of the cowherds of their wealth, who dwell in forest, that supported by a mere mortal Krishna they have committed an insult towards a deity like me.'
यथादृढै: कर्ममयै: क्रतुभिर्नामनौनिभै: ।
विद्यामान्वीक्षिकीं हित्वा तितीर्षन्ति भवार्णवम् ॥४॥
यथा-दृढै: कर्म-मयै:
just as, the sturdy, rituals containing
क्रतुभि:-नाम-नौनिभै:
sacrifices, for name sake undependable boats
विद्याम्-आन्वीक्षिकीम् हित्वा
the knowledge of self realization abandoning,
तितीर्षन्ति भव-अर्णवम्
seek to cross the mundane existence's ocean
It is just like, one seeking to cross the ocean of mundane existence, by abandoning the sturdy boat of the knowledge of self realization, undertakes to perform sacrifice, containing rituals, which are for name sake only boats, utterly undependable.
वाचालं बालिशं स्तब्धमज्ञं पण्डितमानिनम् ।
कृष्णं मर्त्यमुपाश्रित्य गोपा मे चक्रुरप्रियम् ॥५॥
वाचालम् बालिशम् स्तब्धम्-
the talkative, immature, arrogant,
अज्ञम् पण्डित-मानिनम्
ignorant, scholar (himself) believing
कृष्णम् मर्त्यम्-उपाश्रित्य
Krishna the mortal taking shelter of,
गोपा: मे चक्रु:-अप्रियम्
the Gopas, my have committed displeasure
The Gopas having taken shelter of the talkative, immature, arrogant, ignorant, believing himself to be a scholar, the mortal Krishna, have committed displeasure to me.
एषां श्रियावलिप्तानां कृष्णेनाध्यायितात्मनाम् ।
धुनुत श्रीमदस्तम्भं पशून् नयत संक्षयम् ॥६॥
एषाम् श्रिय-अवलिप्तानाम्
of these, by wealth puffed up
कृष्णेन-आध्यायित-आत्मनाम्
by Krishna inflated themselves,
धुनुत श्री-मद-स्तम्भम्
get rid of by wealth caused stiffness,
पशून् नयत संक्षयम्
the cattle take to destruction
As it is, these cowherds were puffed up with the pride of wealth, which was further inflated by Krishna. Get rid of their stiffness caused by wealth, and destruct their cattle.
अहं चैरावतं नागमारुह्यानुव्रजे व्रजम् ।
मरुद्गणैर्महावीर्यैर्नन्दगोष्ठजिघांसया ॥७॥
अहम् च-ऐरावतम् नागम्-
I and Airaawata, the elephant
आरुह्य-अनुव्रजे व्रजम्
mounting, will follow (you) to Vraja
मरुद्गणै:-महा-वीर्यै:-
by the Marut Ganas, very powerful
नन्द-गोष्ठ-जिघांसया
Nanda's cowshed to destruct, desiring
And, I, mounted on the elephant Airaawata, will follow you, along with the very powerful Marut Ganas, the hosts of winds, with the desire of destructing the cowsheds of Nanda.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इत्थं मघवताऽऽज्ञप्ता मेघा निर्मुक्तबन्धना: ।
नन्दगोकुलमासारै: पीडयामासुरोजसा ॥८॥
इत्थम् मघवता-आज्ञप्ता
in this manner, by Indra ordered,
मेघा: निर्मुक्त-बन्धना:
the clouds released of bondages,
नन्द-गोकुलम्-आसारै:
Nanda's Gokula, by torrential rain
पीडयामासु:-ओजसा
tormented powerfully
Thus, ordered by Indra, the clouds released from their bondages, violently tormented Nanda's Gokula by torrential rains.
विद्योतमाना विद्युद्भि: स्तनन्त: स्तनयित्नुभि: ।
तीव्रैर्मरुद्गणैर्नुन्ना ववृषुर्जलशर्करा: ॥९॥
विद्योतमाना विद्युद्भि:
shining with lightening
स्तनन्त: स्तनयित्नुभि:
roaring with thunderstorms,
तीव्रै:-मरुद्गणै:-नुन्ना
with fierce winds driven,
ववृषु:-जल-शर्करा:
rained hail stones
Shining brightly with lightening, roaring with thunderstorms, driven by fierce winds, they rained hail stones.
स्थूणास्थूला वर्षधारा मुञ्चत्स्वभ्रेष्वभीक्ष्णश: ।
जलौघै: प्लाव्यमाना भूर्नादृश्यत नतोन्नतम् ॥१०॥
स्थूणा-स्थूला वर्ष-धारा
pillar like thick rain torrents
मुञ्चत्-स्वभ्रेषु-अभीक्ष्णश:
raining, in the sky incessantly,
जल-औघै: प्लाव्यमाना
by the waters volume, flooded
भू:-न-अदृश्यत नत-उन्नतम्
earth, was not seen, the low and the high (land)
With the clouds incessantly pouring pillar like thick rains, in the sky, by the volume of the water the earth was flooded and the low and high land was not seen.
अत्यासारातिवातेन पशवो जातवेपना: ।
गोपा गोप्यश्च शीतार्ता गोविन्दं शरणं ययु: ॥११॥
अति-आसार-अति-वातेन
by much rain, much wind,
पशव: जात-वेपना:
the creatures started shivering
गोपा: गोप्य:-च शीत-आर्ता:
the Gopas and the Gopis, by cold suffering
गोविन्दम् शरणम् ययु:
to Govinda's shelter went
The animals started shivering by the heavy rain and piercing winds. Even the Gopas and the Gopis were suffering due to cold and so they took Govinda's shelter.
शिर: सुतांश्च कायेन प्रच्छाद्यासारपीडिता: ।
वेपमाना भगवत: पादमूलमुपाययु: ॥१२॥
शिर: सुतान्-च कायेन
(their) heads children and by their bodies
प्रच्छाद्य-आसार-पीडिता:
covering, by torrential rains oppressed,
वेपमाना: भगवत:
shivering, The Lord's
पाद-मूलम्-उपाययु:
feet soles sought
They, covered their heads and protected their children with their bodies, shivering and oppressed by the torrential rain, sought the shelter of The Lord's feet soles.
कृष्ण कृष्ण महाभाग त्वन्नाथं गोकुलं प्रभो ।
त्रातुमर्हसि देवान्न: कुपिताद् भक्तवत्सल ॥१३॥
कृष्ण कृष्ण महाभाग
’Krishna! Krishna! Highly blessed
त्वत्-नाथम् गोकुलम् प्रभो
You The Protector of Gokula, O Lord!
त्रातुम्-अर्हसि देवात्-न:
to save are capable from the god (Indra), us,
कुपिताद् भक्त-वत्सल
enraged, O of the devotees The Lover!
' Krishna! O Krishna! You are highly blessed, You are The Protector of Gokula, the bovine race. You are capable to save us from the enraged god Indra, O Lover of devotees!'
शिलावर्षनिपातेन हन्यमानमचेतनम् ।
निरीक्ष्य भगवान् मेने कुपितेन्द्रकृतं हरि: ॥१४॥
शिला-वर्ष-निपातेन
by the hail stone raining, hitting,
हन्यमानम्-अचेतनम्
hurting, benumbed
निरीक्ष्य भगवान् मेने
seeing The Lord understood
कुपित-इन्द्र-कृतम् हरि:
enraged Indra's work, Shree Hari
Seeing them benumbed and hurt by the hitting of the hail stones, The Lord Shree Hari, understood it to be the work of the enraged Indra.
अपर्त्त्वत्युल्बणं वर्षमतिवातं शिलामयम् ।
स्वयागे विहतेऽस्माभिरिन्द्रो नाशाय वर्षति ॥१५॥
अप-ऋतु-उल्बणम्-वर्षम्-
unseasonal, very strong rain
अति-वातम् शिला-मयम्
and tremendous wind, hail stones consisting of
स्व-यागे विहते-अस्माभि:-
own sacrifice obstructed, by us,
इन्द्र: नाशाय वर्षति
Indra, to destruct rains
His own sacrifice being obstructed by us, Indra is raining this unseasonal rain with strong tempestuous winds consisting of hail stones, to ruin us.
तत्र प्रतिविधिं सम्यगात्मयोगेन साधवे ।
लोकेशमानिनां मौढ्याद्-हरिष्ये श्रीमदं तम: ॥१६॥
तत्र प्रतिविधिम् सम्यक्-
in that (case) remedy proper
आत्म-योगेन साधवे
by (My) own Yoga (power) will employ
लोक-ईश-मानिनाम् मौढ्यात्-
of world's lords considering (themselves), by infatuation,
हरिष्ये श्री-मदम् तम:
will take away of wealth the pride and ignorance
In that case, I will employ a proper remedy by My own Yogic power, and will take away the pride of wealth and ignorance of the gods who consider themselves to be the rulers of the worlds.
न हि सद्भावयुक्तानां सुराणामीशविस्मय: ।
मत्तोऽसतां मानभङ्ग: प्रशमायोपकल्पते ॥१७॥
न हि सद्भाव-युक्तानाम्
not indeed, Sattva quality endowed with,
सुराणाम्-ईश-विस्मय:
of the gods, pride of supreme rulership, is strange,
मत्त:-असताम् मान-भङ्ग:
by Me, of the vile humiliation
प्रशमाय-उपकल्पते
for peace is conducive
The gods endowed with the quality of Sattva should not have the pride of being the supreme ruler. It is strange indeed. Their humiliation by Me will be conducive to their peace of mind.
तस्मान्मच्छरणं गोष्ठं मन्नाथं मत्परिग्रहम् ।
गोपाये स्वात्मयोगेन सोऽयं मे व्रत आहित: ॥१८॥
तस्मात्-मत्-शरणम् गोष्ठम्
therefore, in my shelter, the cowshed,
मत्-नाथम् मत्-परिग्रहम्
as Me the Master, under My protection,
गोपाये स्व-आत्म-योगेन
will protect, by My own divine Yoga power
स:-अयम् मे व्रत आहित:
that, this My vow, known to be
Therefore, this cowshed, Vraja, which is in My shelter, and considers Me The Master, and as such is under My protection, I will protect it by My own divine Yogic power. Also that, it is well known that this is My vow.
इत्युक्त्वैकेन हस्तेन कृत्वा गोवर्धनाचलम् ।
दधार लीलया कृष्णश्छत्राकमिव बालक: ॥१९॥
इति-उक्त्वा-एकेन हस्तेन
thus saying, by one hand
कृत्वा गोवर्धन-अचलम्
uprooting the Govardhana mountain
दधार लीलया कृष्ण:-
lifted sportingly Krishna
छत्राकम्-इव बालक:
mushroom like a child
Thus saying, Krishna, sportingly, with one hand, uprooted and lifted up the Govardhana mountain, like a child would uproot a mushroom.
अथाह भगवान् गोपान् हेऽम्ब तात व्रजौकस: ।
यथोपजोषं विशत गिरिगर्तं सगोधना: ॥२०॥
अथ-आह भगवान् गोपान्
then, said The Lord, to the Gopas,
हे-अम्ब तात व्रजौकस:
O Mother! Father! Vraja people!
यथा-उपजोषम् विशत
as convenient enter
गिरि-गर्तम् स-गोधना:
the mountain's hollow, along with cattle wealth
Then, The Lord said to the Gopas, 'O Mother! Father! And people of Vraja! Enter the hollow of the mountain as convenient, and take shelter along with your belongings and the wealth of cattle.'
न त्रास इह व: कार्यो मद्-हस्ताद्रिनिपातने ।
वातवर्षभयेनालं तत्त्राणं विहितं हि व: ॥२१॥
न त्रास: इह व: कार्य:
not worry in this by you be done,
मत्-हस्त-अद्रि-निपातने
on My hand the mountain lifted
वात-वर्ष-भयेन-अलम्
wind and rain fear do not,
तत्-त्राणम् विहितम् हि व:
from that to be safe is done indeed for you
You should not worry that the mountain is placed on My hand. Do not fear the storm and the rain. For you all to be safe from that, this has been done.
तथा निर्विविशुर्गर्तं कृष्णाश्वासितमानसा: ।
यथावकाशं सधना: सव्रजा: सोपजीविन: ॥२२॥
तथा निर्विविशु:-गर्तम्
like that, entered the hollow
कृष्ण-आश्वासित-मानसा:
by Krishna reassured minded,
यथा-अवकाशम् स-धना:
as convenient, with their wealth,
स-व्रजा: स-उपजीविन:
the carts and fellow workers
In this manner, their minds reassured by Krishna, they entered the cavity according to convenience, along with their cattle wealth, the carts and fellow workers.
क्षुत्तृड्व्यथां सुखापेक्षां हित्वा तैर्व्रजवासिभि: ।
वीक्ष्यमाणो दधावद्रिं सप्ताहं नाचलत् पदात् ॥२३॥
क्षुत्-तृड्-व्यथाम् सुख-अपेक्षाम्
hunger, thirst, suffering, of comfort expectation
हित्वा तै:-व्रज-वासिभि:
abandoning by those Vraja residents
वीक्ष्यमाण: दधौ-अद्रिम्
being looked upon, held up the mountain
सप्त-अहम् न-अचलत् पदात्
for seven days, did not move a foot
Disregarding the suffering of hunger and thirst, and abandoning the expectation of comfort, being constantly looked up to by the residents of Vraja, He did not move even a foot for seven days.
कृष्णयोगानुभावं तं निशाम्येन्द्रोऽतिविस्मित: ।
नि:स्तम्भो भ्रष्टसङ्कल्प: स्वान् मेघान् संन्यवारयत् ॥२४॥
कृष्ण-योग-अनुभावम् तम्
Krishna's Yoga's effect that,
निशाम्य-इन्द्र:-अति-विस्मित:
observing, Indra, very amazed,
नि:स्तम्भ: भ्रष्ट-सङ्कल्प:
wonder-struck, of broken determination,
स्वान् मेघान् संन्यवारयत्
own clouds totally stopped
Indra, observing that effect of Krishna's Yogic power was very much amazed and wonder-struck. His purpose defeated, he totally stopped his clouds.
खं व्यभ्रमुदितादित्यं वातवर्षं च दारुणम् ।
निशाम्योपरतं गोपान् गोवर्धनधरोऽब्रवीत् ॥२५॥
खम् व्यभ्रम्-उदित-आदित्यम्
the sky without clouds, risen Sun,
वात-वर्षम् च दारुणम्
wind and rain fierce
निशाम्य-उपरतम् गोपान्
noticing, having stopped, to the Gopas,
गोवर्धन-धर:-अब्रवीत्
The Govardhana Bearer said
Noticing that the sky was clear of clouds and the fierce wind and rain had stopped, The Bearer of Govardhana, Krishna, said to the Gopas,….
निर्यात त्यजत त्रासं गोपा: सस्त्रीधनार्भका: ।
उपारतं वातवर्षं व्युदप्रायाश्च निम्नगा: ॥२६॥
निर्यात त्यजत त्रासम् गोपा:
'Go out, expel fear, O Gopas!
स-स्त्री-धन-अर्भका:
with women, wealth and children,
उपारतम् वात-वर्षम्
has stopped the wind and rain,
व्युदप्राया:-च निम्नगा:
almost emptied and are the rivers
'O Gopas! Expel all fear and go out with the women, wealth and the children. The wind and the rain have stopped and the rivers are almost emptied.'
ततस्ते निर्ययुर्गोपा: स्वं स्वमादाय गोधनम् ।
शकटोढोपकरणं स्त्रीबालस्थविरा: शनै: ॥२७॥
तत:-ते निर्ययु:-गोपा:
after that, they went out, the Gopas,
स्वम् स्वम्-आदाय गोधनम्
their own taking cattle wealth,
शकट-ऊढ-उपकरणम्
on the carts loaded articles,
स्त्री-बाल-स्थविरा: शनै:
women, children, the aged, slowly
After that, the Gopas gradually went out taking along their own cattle wealth, loading the goods on the carts and with the women children and the aged.
भगवानपि तं शैलं स्वस्थाने पूर्ववत् प्रभु: ।
पश्यतां सर्वभूतानां स्थापयामास लीलया ॥२८॥
भगवान्-अपि तम् शैलम्
The Lord also, that mountain,
स्व-स्थाने पूर्व-वत् प्रभु:
in its own place, before like, The Almighty
पश्यताम् सर्व-भूतानाम्
as looked on all the beings
स्थापयामास लीलया
placed sportingly
The Almighty Lord also, sportingly placed that mountain in its own place, like before, as all the living beings looked on.
तं प्रेमवेगान्निभृता व्रजौकसो यथा समीयु: परिरम्भणादिभि: ।
गोप्यश्च सस्नेहमपूजयन् मुदा दध्यक्षताद्भिर्युयुजु: सदाशिष: ॥२९॥
तम् प्रेम-वेगात्-निभृता:
Him, by love overflowing, contained
व्रज-औकस: यथा समीयु:
the Vraja residents, in a just manner honoured
परिरम्भण-आदिभि:
with embrace and others
गोप्य:-च सस्नेहम्-अपूजयन्
the Gopis and with love worshipped
मुदा दधि-अक्षत्-अद्भि:-
with delight, with curds, rice, water
युयुजु: सत्-आशिष:
and showered benedictory blessings
The residents of Vraja, full of overflowing love, honoured Him in a just manner by embracing Him, etc., and the Gopis also with love and delight worshipped Him with curds, rice, water, and showered Him with benedictory blessings.
यशोदा रोहिणी नन्दो रामश्च बलिनां वर: ।
कृष्णमालिङ्ग्य युयुजुराशिष: स्नेहकातरा: ॥३०॥
यशोदा रोहिणी नन्द:
Yashodaa, Rohinee, Nanda,
राम:-च बलिनाम् वर:
Raama, and of powerful the best
कृष्णम्-आलिङ्ग्य युयुजु:-
Krishna embraced and gave
आशिष: स्नेह-कातरा:
blessings, with love overwhelmed
Yashodaa, Rohinee, Naada, Balaraama, the best of the powerful, were overwhelmed with love, embraced Krishna and blessed Him.
दिवि देवगणा: साध्या: सिद्धगन्धर्वचारणा: ।
तुष्टुवुर्मुमुचुस्तुष्टा: पुष्पवर्षाणि पार्थिव ॥३१॥
दिवि देव-गणा: साध्या:
in the heaven, the gods' hosts, the Saadhyaa,
सिद्ध-गन्धर्व-चारणा:
the Siddha, the Gandharva, the Chaaranas,
तुष्टुवु:-मुमुचु:-तुष्टा:
glorified, and showered, gratified,
पुष्प-वर्षाणि पार्थिव
flowers in abundance, O King!
O King! in the heaven, the hosts of gods, the Saadhyaa, the Siddhas, the Gandharvas, the Chaaranas, were gratified and glorified Him and showered flowers in abundance on Him.
शङ्खदुन्दुभयो नेदुर्दिवि देवप्रणोदिता: ।
जगुर्गन्धर्वपतयस्तुम्बुरुप्रमुखा नृप ॥३२॥
शङ्ख-दुन्दुभय: नेदु:-
conchs and trumpets were sounded
दिवि देव-प्रणोदिता:
in the heaven, by the gods prompted,
जगु:-गन्धर्व-पतय:-
sang, of the Gandharvas the chief
तुम्बुरु-प्रमुखा: नृप
Tumburu and the prominent, O King!
O King! Prompted by the gods, the conchs and trumpets were sounded in the heaven, and the chief of the Gandharvas,' Tumburu and the other prominent ones, sang praises.
ततोऽनुरक्तै: पशुपै: परिश्रितो राजन् स गोष्ठं सबलोऽव्रजद्-हरि: ।
तथाविधान्यस्य कृतानि गोपिका गायन्त्य ईयुर्मुदिता हृदिस्पृश: ॥३३॥
तत:-अनुरक्तै: पशुपै: परिश्रित:
then, by the loving cowherds, surrounded,
राजन् स: गोष्ठम्
O King! He to the cowshed
स-बल:-अव्रजत्-हरि:
with Balaraama, went Shree Hari,
तथा-विधानि-अस्य कृतानि
of that sort, His exploits
गोपिका: गायन्त्य-
the Gopikaas sang
ईयु:-मुदिता: हृदि-स्पृश:
returned, delighted, heart touching
O King! Then, surrounded by the loving cowherds, He, Shree Hari, along with Balaraama went to the cowshed of Vraja. The delighted Gopis returned to Vraja, and sang of such and other of His heart touching exploits.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे पञ्चविंश: अध्याय: ॥२५॥
Thus ends twenty-fifth discourse in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
