श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं विधानि कर्माणि गोपा: कृष्णस्य वीक्ष्य ते ।

अतद्वीर्यविद: प्रोचु: समभ्येत्य सुविस्मिता: ॥१॥


एवम् विधानि कर्माणि
of such sort exploits,
गोपा: कृष्णस्य वीक्ष्य ते
the Gopas of Shree Krishna, seeing, they,
अतत्-वीर्य-विद: प्रोचु:
not His prowess knowers, said,
समभ्येत्य सुविस्मिता:
getting together, much perplexed

The Gopas, seeing such sort of exploits of Shree Krishna, and not knowing of His prowess, got together and much perplexed, said,…


बालकस्य यदेतानि कर्माण्यत्यद्भुतानि वै ।

कथमर्हत्यसौ जन्म ग्राम्येष्वात्मजुगुप्सितम् ॥२॥


बालकस्य यत्-एतानि
of a boy, in that, these
कर्माणि-अति-अद्भुतानि वै
feats very wonderful, indeed,
कथम्-अर्हति-असौ जन्म
how does deserves He a birth
ग्राम्येषु-आत्म-जुगुप्सितम्
among rustics, for Himself unworthy

'So wonderful are the feats of this boy, indeed. How does He deserve a birth among us rustics? Surely it is unworthy for His own Self.


य: सप्तहायनो बाल: करेणैकेन लीलया ।

कथं बिभ्रद्गिरिवरं पुष्करं गजराडिव ॥३॥


य: सप्त-हायन: बाल:
Who, for seven days, the boy
करेण-एकेन लीलया
by hand one sportingly
कथम् बिभ्रद्-गिरि-वरम्
how held up the mountain lofty
पुष्करम् गज-राज्-इव
a lotus a lordly elephant like

The boy Who, sportingly held up the lofty mountain on one hand for seven days, like a lordly elephant would hold a lotus.


तोकेनामीलिताक्षेण पूतनाया महौजस: ।

पीत: स्तन: सह प्राणै: कालेनेव वयस्तनो: ॥४॥


तोकेन-आमीलित-अक्षेण
by a mere child, with closed eyes,
पूतनाया: महौजस:
of Pootanaa, the very fierce,
पीत: स्तन: सह प्राणै:
sucked the breast, with(her) life force,
कालेन-इव वय:-तनो:
by Time (Death) like, the age of the body

By a mere child, with His eyes closed was sucked the breast of the fierce Pootanaa, along with her life force, like Time (Death) sucks the age of the body.


हिन्वतोऽध: शयानस्य मास्यस्य चरणावुदक् ।

अनोऽपतद् विपर्यस्तं रुदत: प्रपदाहतम् ॥५॥


हिन्वत:-अध: शयानस्य
kicking, underneath sleeping,
मास्यस्य चरणौ-उदक्
of three months (of age), both feet up
अन:-अपतद् विपर्य:-तम्
the cart fell upside down,
रुदत: प्रपदा-आहतम्
Him crying, by fore-feet hit

When, of three months of age, He was sleeping underneath the cart and kicking His both feet, hit by His fore-feet, the cart fell upside down, as He started crying.


एकहायन आसीनो ह्रियमाणो विहायसा ।

दैत्येन यस्तृणावर्तमहन् कण्ठग्रहातुरम् ॥६॥


एक-हायन आसीन:
one year (of age) squatting,
ह्रियमाण: विहायसा
carried away in the sky
दैत्येन य:-तृणावर्तम्-
by the demon, Who, Trinaavarta,
अहन् कण्ठ-ग्रह-आतुरम्
killed, by the neck held, choked

When, one year of age, as He was squatting, He was carried away in the sky by the demon named Trinaavarta, whom He killed by holding him by the neck and choking him.


क्वचिद्-हैयंगवस्तैन्ये मात्रा बद्ध उलूखले ।

गच्छन्नर्जुयोर्मध्ये बाहुभ्यां तावपातयत् ॥७॥


क्वचिद्-हैयंगव-स्तैन्ये
once, (when) butter stealing,
मात्रा बद्ध उलूखले
by the mother was tied to the mortar,
गच्छन्-अर्जुनयो:-मध्ये
going the two Arjuna (trees) from between,
बाहुभ्याम् तौ-अपातयत्
by arms both felled (them)

Once, when He was caught stealing butter, and was tied to the mortar by His mother, He went in between the two trees of Arjuna and with His two arms, caused them to fall.


वने सञ्चारयन् वत्सान् सरामो बालकैर्वृत: ।

हन्तुकामं बकं दोर्भ्यां मुखतोऽरिमपाटयत् ॥८॥


वने सञ्चारयन् वत्सान्
in the forest, pasturing the calves,
स-राम: बालकै:-वृत:
with Balaraama, by the boys surrounded,
हन्तु-कामम् बकम् दोर्भ्याम्
to kill wanting to, the heron by two (hands)
मुखत:-अरिम्-अपाटयत्
by mouth the bill tore apart

He, surrounded by the boys, pasturing the cows in the forest, with Balaraama, by His two hands, tore apart the mouth's bill of the heron, who was wanting to kill them.


वत्सेषु वत्सरूपेण प्रविशन्तं जिघांसया ।

हत्वा न्यपातयत्तेन कपित्थानि च लीलया ॥९॥


वत्सेषु वत्स-रूपेण
among the calves, with a calf's form
प्रविशन्तम् जिघांसया हत्वा
found way, intending to kill, killed,
न्यपातयत्-तेन
felling by him
कपित्थानि च लीलया
the Kapittha trees and sportingly

Another demon, taking the form of a calf, found its way among the calves, intending to kill them. He killed it by throwing it on the Kapittha trees, and caused the trees to fall.


हत्वा रासभदैतेयं तद् बन्धूंश्च बलान्वित: ।

चक्रे तालवनं क्षेमं परिपक्वफलान्वितम् ॥१०॥


हत्वा रासभ-दैतेयम्
by killing, the donkey demon
तद् बन्धून्-च बल-अन्वित:
its kinsfolk and, Balaraama accompanied by
चक्रे ताल-वनम् क्षेमम्
rendered the palm forest useful,
परिपक्व फल-अन्वितम्
ripe fruits consisting of

Accompanied by Balaraama, He killed the donkey demon, Dhenukaasura, and its kinsfolk, and rendered the palm forest useful consisting of ripe fruits.


प्रलम्बं घातयित्वोग्रं बलेन बलशालिना ।

अमोचयद् व्रजपशून् गोपांश्चारण्यवह्नित: ॥११॥


प्रलम्बम् घातयित्वा-उग्रम्
Pralamba having killed, the terrible
बलेन बल-शालिना
with Balaraama, the powerful,
अमोचयद् व्रज-पशून्
rescued the Vraja cattle
गोपान्-च-अरण्य-वह्नित:
the cowherds and from the forest fire

With the powerful Balaraama, He killed the terrible Pralambaasura, and rescued the cattle of Vraja, and even the cowherds from the forest fire.


आशीविषतमाहीन्द्रं दमित्वा विमदं ह्रदात् ।

प्रसह्योद्वास्य यमुनां चक्रेऽसौ निर्विषोदकाम् ॥१२॥


आशीविषतम्-अहीन्द्रम्
the venomous snake king (Kaaliya)
दमित्वा विमदम् ह्रदात्
overcame, and subdued (his) haughtiness, from the pool
प्रसह्य-उद्वास्य यमुनाम्
forcefully expelled, Yamuna,
चक्रे-असौ निर्विष-उदकाम्
rendered, He, poison-less watered

He, overcame the king of snakes, Kaaliya, and subdued his haughtiness, and forcefully expelled him from the pool and thus rendered the water of Yamuna free from poison.


दुस्त्यजश्चानुरागोऽस्मिन् सर्वेषां नो व्रजौकसाम् ।

नन्द ते तनयेऽस्मासु तस्याप्यौत्पत्तिक: कथम् ॥१३॥


दुस्त्यज:-च-अनुराग:-अस्मिन्
hard to give up, and affection in Him
सर्वेषाम् न: व्रज-औकसाम्
of all us Vraja residents,
नन्द ते तनये-अस्मासु
O Nanda! In your son, in us
तस्य-अपि-औत्पत्तिक: कथम्
His also natural is How?

O Nanda! We all, the residents of Vraja, have affection for your son, which is difficult to give up. In us, He too has a natural affection. How is this?


क्व सप्तहायनो बाल: क्व महाद्रिविधारणम् ।

ततो नो जायते शङ्का व्रजनाथ तवात्मजे ॥१४॥


क्व सप्त-हायन: बाल:
how seven years boy
क्व महा-अद्रि-विधारणम्
how the great mountain lifting up
तत: न: जायते शङ्का
therefore our aroused is suspicion
व्रजनाथ तव-आत्मजे
O ruler of Vraja! About your son

O Ruler of Vraja! How can a boy of just seven years lift up a great mountain? This is why our suspicion is aroused about your son, that, is He God Himself?


नन्द उवाच -
Nanda said -
श्रूयतां मे वचो गोपा व्येतु शङ्का च वोऽर्भके ।

एनं कुमारमुद्दिश्य गर्गो मे यदुवाच ह ॥१५॥


श्रूयताम् मे वच: गोपा:
listen to my words, O Gopas!
व्येतु शङ्का च व:-अर्भके
May be removed doubt and yours about the boy
एनम् कुमारम्-उद्दिश्य
this young boy regarding
गर्ग: मे यत्-उवाच ह
Garga, to me what said, indeed

O Gopas! Do listen to my words, so that your doubt may be removed. Regarding this boy, what the sage Garga had said to me,…


वर्णास्त्रय: किलास्यासन् गृह्णतोऽनुयुगं तनू: ।

शुक्लो रक्तस्तथा पीत इदानीं कृष्णतां गत: ॥१६॥


वर्णा:-त्रय: किल्-अस्य-आसन्
colours three, indeed, His were,
गृह्णत:-अनुयुगम् तनू:
when taking year after year, physical form
शुक्ल: रक्त:-तथा पीत:
white, red, and yellow,
इदानीम् कृष्णताम् गत:
now, darkness has acquired

Manifesting in physical form, year after year, He had three colours, white, red and yellow. Now, He has acquired a dark complexion.


प्रागयं वसुदेवस्य क्वचिज्जातस्तवात्मज: ।

वासुदेव इति श्रीमानभिज्ञा: सम्प्रचक्षते ॥१७॥


प्राक्-अयम् वसुदेवस्य
formerly, this of Vaasudeva
क्वचित्-जात:-तव-आत्मज:
sometime, was born your son,
वासुदेव इति श्रीमान्-
Vaasudeva, this, the wise,
अभिज्ञा: सम्प्रचक्षते
glorious name designate

Formerly, at some time, to Vasudeva, this your son was born. The wise designate the glorious name Vaasudeva to Him.


बहूनि सन्ति नामानि रूपाणि च सुतस्य ते ।

गुणकर्मानुरूपाणि तान्यहं वेद नो जना: ॥१८॥


बहूनि सन्ति नामानि
many are names
रूपाणि च सुतस्य ते
forms and of the son your
गुण-कर्म-अनुरूपाणि
excellences and actions confirming to,
तानि-अहम् वेद नो जना:
those, I know, not the people

This son of yours has many names and forms, confirming to His excellences and actions. I know those names, which the people do not know.


एष: व: श्रेय आधास्यद् गोपगोकुलनन्दन: ।

अनेन सर्वदुर्गाणि यूयमञ्जस्तरिष्यथ ॥१९॥


एष: व: श्रेय: आधास्यत्
He, of you all well-being will ascertain
गोप-गो-कुल-नन्दन:
to the Gopas, the bovine race delighter,
अनेन सर्व-दुर्गाणि
by Him, all hardships
यूयम्-अञ्ज:-तरिष्यथ
you all easily will overcome

He, The delight of the bovine race, will ascertain your well being and will bring delight to the Gopas and the whole of Gokula. By His help, you all will easily overcome all difficulties.


पुरानेन व्रजपते साधवो दस्युपीडिता: ।

अराजके रक्ष्यमाणा जिग्युर्दस्यून् समेधिता: ॥२०॥


पुरा-अनेन व्रजपते
in the past, by Him, O Lord of Vraja!
साधव: दस्यु-पीडिता:
the saints, by the robbers tormented
अराजके रक्ष्यमाणा:
in anarchy were protected,
जिग्यु:-दस्यून् समेधिता:
and conquered the robbers strengthened

O Lord of Vraja! In the past at the time of anarchy, when the saints were tormented by the robbers, they were protected by Him, and, strengthened by Him, they conquered the robbers.


य एतस्मिन् महाभागा: प्रीतिं कुर्वन्ति मानवा: ।

नारयोऽभिभवन्त्येतान् विष्णुपक्षानिवासुरा: ॥२१॥


ये एतस्मिन् महाभागा:
(those) who, in Him, the blessed,
प्रीतिम् कुर्वन्ति मानवा:
love develop, people
न-अरय:-अभिभवन्ति-एतान्
not enemies overpower them
विष्णु-पक्षान्-इव-असुरा:
on Vishnu's side like the demons

Those blessed people who have inculcated love for Him, the enemies cannot overcome them, just as the demons cannot over come those who are on Vishnu's side.


तस्मान्नन्द कुमारोऽयं नारायणसमो गुणै: ।

श्रिया कीर्त्यानुभावेन तत्कर्मसु न विस्मय: ॥२२॥


तस्मात्-नन्द कुमारो:-अयम्
therefore, O Nanda! child this
नारायण-सम: गुणै:
Naaraayana like in excellences,
श्रिया कीर्त्या-अनुभावेन
splendour, fame, glory,
तत्-कर्मसु न विस्मय:
so, in exploits, do not be surprised

O Nanda! Therefore, this child is like Naaraayana in excellences, splendour, fame and glory. So, do not be surprised about His exploits.


इति अद्धा मां समादिश्य गर्गे स्वगृहं गते ।

मन्ये नारायणस्यांशं कृष्णमक्लिष्टकारिणम् ॥२३॥


इति अद्धा माम् समादिश्य
in this manner, directly, me having instructed,
गर्गे स्व-गृहम् गते
Garga, to his own house having gone,
मन्ये नारायणस्य-अंशम्
(I) consider Naaraayana's part (manifestation)
कृष्णम्-अक्लिष्ट-कारिणम्
Krishna, the afflictions remover

In this manner, ever since I was directly instructed by Garga, and after he went away to his own house, I have considered Krishna, the afflictions remover, to be a part incarnation of Naaraayana.


इति नन्द वच: श्रुत्वा गर्गगीतं व्रजौकस: ।

दृष्टश्रुतानुभावास्ते कृष्णस्यामिततेजस: ।

मुदिता नन्दमानर्चु: कृष्णं च गतविस्मया: ॥२४॥


इति नन्द वच: श्रुत्वा
this, Nanda's words hearing,
गर्ग-गीतम् व्रजौकस:
as told by Garga, Vraja residents
दृष्ट-श्रुत-अनुभावा:-ते
having seen and heard the glory, they,
कृष्णस्य-अमित-तेजस:
of Krishna, of infinite energy
मुदिता: नन्दम्-आनर्चु:
with delight Nanda worshipped
कृष्णम् च गत-विस्मया:
Krishna and overcome wonder

The residents of Vraja, having heard these words of Nanda, as told by Garga, and having seen and heard of the glory of Krishna of infinite energy, worshipped Nanda and Krishna with delight, and were rid of wonder.


देवे वर्षति यज्ञविप्लवरुषा वज्राश्मपर्षानिलै:

सीदत्पालपशुस्त्रि आत्मशरणं दृष्ट्वानुकम्प्युत्स्मयन् ।

उत्पाट्यैककरेण शैलमबलो लीलोच्छिलीन्ध्रं यथा

बिभ्रद् गोष्ठमपान्महेन्द्रमदभित् प्रीयान्न इन्द्रो गवाम् ॥२५॥


देवे वर्षति यज्ञ-विप्लव-
(when) the gods rained, the sacrifice interruption
रुषा वज्र-अश्मपर्ष-अनिलै:
enraged, by thunder storm, hailstorms and winds
सीदत्-पाल-पशु-स्त्रि
tormenting, the cowherds, the cows, women,
आत्म-शरणम् दृष्ट्वा-
in own shelter seeing,
अनुकम्पी-उत्-स्मयन्
the compassionate, indeed, smilingly
उत्पाट्य-एक-करेण शैलम्-
uprooting by one hand the mountain,
अबल: लील-उच्छिलीन्ध्रम् यथा
the child, playfully a mushroom, just as,
बिभ्रद् गोष्ठम्-अपात्-
uplifted, the cowshed saved
महेन्द्र-मद-भित्
of Indra pride crushing
प्रीयात्-न: इन्द्र: गवाम्
may be pleased with us, The Ruler of cows!

When, enraged at their sacrifice being interrupted, the gods rained heavy showers , thunder, lightening, hailstorms, and gails of wind, seeing Himself as the protector, The Compassionate Krishna, a mere child, uprooted the mountain with one hand, just as a mushroom, and uplifted it, and saved the cowshed Vraja, and crushed the pride of Indra. May He, The Ruler of the cows, be pleased with us.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे षड्विंश: अध्याय: ॥२६॥


Thus ends the twenty-sixth discourse in the first half of Book-Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
