श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
गोवर्धने धृते शैल आसाराद् रक्षिते व्रजे ।

गोलोकादाव्रजत् कृष्णं सुरभि: शक्र एव च ॥१॥


गोवर्धने धृते शैले
(when) Govardhana was uplifted the mountain
आसारात् रक्षिते व्रजे
from thunder storm, was saved Vraja,
गोलोकात्-अव्रजत् कृष्णम्
from the heaven came to Krishna
सुरभि: शक्र: एव च
Surabhi (the divine cow) Indra also and

When, the mountain Govardhana was uplifted and Vraja was protected from the thunder storm, the celestial cow, Surabhi and Indra came from heaven to Krishna.


विविक्त उपसङ्गम्य व्रीडित: कृतहेलन: ।

पस्पर्श पादयोरेनं केरीटेनार्कवर्चसा ॥२॥


विविक्ते उपसङ्गम्य
in seclusion, approaching Him,
व्रीडित: कृत-हेलन:
ashamed of having done disrespect
पस्पर्श पादयो:-एनम्
touched with both feet Him
केरीटेन-अर्क-वर्चसा
by the crown with sun like splendour

Indra, ashamed for having shown disrespect to Shree Krishna, approached Him in seclusion, and touched His both feet with his own crown having the splendour like that of the Sun.


दृष्टश्रुतानुभावोऽस्य कृष्णस्यामिततेजस: ।

नष्टत्रिलोकेशमद इन्द्र आह कृताञ्जलि: ॥३॥


दृष्ट-श्रुत-अनुभाव:-अस्य
(having) seen, and heard, of the glory His
कृष्णस्य-अमित-तेजस:
Krishna's, of infinite energy,
नष्ट-त्रिलोक-ईश-मद:
(was) destroyed of the three world's lord's pride,
इन्द्र: आह कृत-अञ्जलि:
Indra said with joined palms

The lord of the three worlds, Indra, had heard and witnessed the infinite energy of Shree Krishna, and his pride was destroyed, and with joined palms he said,...


विशुद्धसत्त्वं तव धाम शान्तं तपोमयं ध्वस्तरजस्तमस्कम् ।

मायामयोऽयं गुणसम्प्रवाहो न विद्यते तेऽग्रहणानुबन्ध: ॥४॥


विशुद्ध-सत्त्वम् तव धाम
pure Sattva, Your character,
शान्तम् तप:-मयम्
is peaceful, wisdom full of,
ध्वस्त रज:-तमस्कम्
bereft of Rajas, and Tamas untouched by
माया-मय:-अयम्
of Maaya contained, this (universe)
गुण-सम्प्रवाह: न विद्यते
is the Guna's outflow, does not exist
ते-अग्रहण-अनुबन्ध:
in You, by ignorance persists

Your essential character is peaceful and full of wisdom, bereft of Rajas and untouched by Tamas. Whereas, this universe is contained of Maaya, and is the outflow of the Gunas, which does not exist in You, and persists due to ignorance.


कुतो नु तत्-हेतव ईश तत्कृता लोभादयो येऽबुधलिङ्गभावा: ।

तथापि दण्डं भगवान् बिभर्ति धर्मस्य गुप्त्यै खलनिग्रहाय ॥५॥


कुत: नु तत्-हेतव: ईश
from where then, of that (rebirth) the cause, O Lord!
तत्-कृता लोभ-आदय:
by that generated greed etc.,
ये-अबुध-लिङ्ग-भावा:
those ignorance signs denoting
तथा-अपि दण्डम्
then, also, punishment
भगवान् बिभर्ति धर्मस्य
The Lord extends, for righteousness
गुप्त्यै खल-निग्रहाय
to protect, and for the wicked ensnaring

O Lord! Then, from where, greed etc., which cause rebirth, and are the distinct sign of ignorance, can be in You? Yet, You, O Lord! meet out punishment to protect righteousness, and to diminish the wicked.


पिता गुरुस्त्वं जगतामधीशो दुरत्यय: काल उपात्तदण्ड: ।

हिताय स्वेच्छातनुभि: समीहसे मानं विधुन्वञ्जगदीशमानिनाम् ॥६॥


पिता गुरु:-त्वम् जगताम्-अधीश:
Father, Preceptor, You are of the worlds' The Ruler,
दुरत्यय: काल: उपात्त-दण्ड:
insurmountable Time, holding the sceptre
हिताय स्वेच्छा-तनुभि: समीहसे
for the benefit by (Your)own will, forms assuming,
मानम् विधुन्वन्-
the pride crushing
जगदीश-मानिनाम्
(of those) the worlds' rulers considering

Your are the father and the preceptor, and the insurmountable Time Spirit, holding the sceptre, and for the benefit of the beings, assuming forms at will, and also crushing the pride of those who consider themselves to be the rulers of the worlds.


ये मद्विधाज्ञा जगदीशमानिनस्त्वां वीक्ष्य कालेऽभयमाशु तन्मदम् ।

हित्वाऽऽर्यमार्गं प्रभजन्त्यपस्मया ईहा खलानामपि तेऽनुशासनम् ॥७॥


ये मत्-विधा-अज्ञा:
those, me like, foolish,
जगदीश-मानिन:-त्वाम् वीक्ष्य
of the worlds' rulers considering, You observing,
काले-अभयम्-आशु तत्-मदम्
in Time (of danger) fearless, instantly their pride
हित्वा-आर्य-मार्गम् प्रभजन्ति-
is curbed, of the saints' ways follow,
अपस्मया: ईहा खलानाम्-
humbled, (Your) activity, for the wicked,
अपि ते-अनुशासनम्
even (is) Your punishment

The foolish like me, who consider themselves to be the rulers of the worlds, their pride is curbed by observing You fearless in the Time of danger, and humbled, they take to the path of the saints. Your activity itself is a punishment for the wicked.


स त्वं ममैश्वर्यमदप्लुतस्य कृतागसस्तेऽविदुष: प्रभावम् ।

क्षन्तुं प्रभोऽथार्हसि मूढचेतसो मैवं पुनर्भून्मतिरीश मेऽसती ॥८॥


स: त्वम् मम-ऐश्वर्य-
That, You, my of splendour
मद-प्लुतस्य कृत-आगस:-
pride drowned in, committed sin
ते-अविदुष: प्रभावम्
against You, ignorant of (Your) greatness,
क्षन्तुम् प्रभो-अथ-अर्हसि
to pardon, O Almighty! now are capable
मूढ-चेतस: मा-एवम् पुन:-
dumb minded, may not, such again
भूत्-मति:-ईश मे-असती
happen, intellect, O Lord! my in evil

That, You, O Almighty! May be so pleased to pardon me, I, drowned in the pride of my splendour, ignorant of Your greatness, having committed sin against You, and O Lord! ordain that this may not happen again that my intellect may indulge in evil.


तवावतारोऽयमधोक्षजेह स्वयम्भराणामुरुभारजन्मनाम् ।

चमूपतीनामभवाय देव भवाय युष्मच्चरणानुवर्तिनाम् ॥९॥


तव-अवतार:-अयम्-अधोक्षज-
Your manifestation, this, O Lord! above senses,
इह स्वयम्-भराणाम्-
here, for those who live for self-gratification,
उरु-भार-जन्मनाम्
and are a great burden for the beings,
चमू-पतीनाम्-अभवाय देव
of armies leaders (of such people) extermination O Lord!
भवाय युष्मत्-
and for welfare of those, who to Your
चरण-अनुवर्तिनाम्
feet are devoted

O Lord! You are above sense perception. This manifestation of Yours is for the extermination of the people, like leaders of armies, who are a burden to the living beings and are concerned of their own gratification, and O Lord! For the welfare of those who are devoted to Your feet.


नमस्तुभ्यं भगवते पुरुषाय महात्मने ।

वासुदेवाय कृष्णाय सात्वतां पतये नम: ॥१०॥


नम:-तुभ्यम् भगवते
salutations to You, O Almighty!
पुरुषाय महात्मने
The Ancient Person! The Supreme Spirit!
वासुदेवाय कृष्णाय
Vaasudeva! Krishna!
सात्वताम् पतये नम:
of the Yaadavaas the Protector! Hail!

Salutations to You, O Almighty! The Ancient Person! The Supreme Spirit! Vaasudeva! Krishna! O Protector of the Yaadavaas! Hail!


स्वच्छन्दोपात्तदेहाय विशुद्धज्ञानमूर्तये ।

सर्वस्मै सर्वबीजाय सर्वभूतात्मने नम: ॥११॥


स्वच्छन्द-उपात्त-देहाय
of own will, taking form,
विशुद्ध-ज्ञान-मूर्तये
pure wisdom embodied,
सर्वस्मै सर्व-बीजाय
encompassing all, of all The Cause,
सर्व-भूत-आत्मने नम:
of all the beings The Soul! Salutations

Salutations to You, who assume a form at will, are embodiment of pure wisdom, encompassing all, The Cause of all, The Soul of all beings!


मयेदं भगवन् गोष्ठनाशायासारवायुभि: ।

चेष्टितं विहते यज्ञे मानिना तीव्रमन्युना ॥१२॥


मया-इदम् भगवन्
by me, O Lord!
गोष्ठ-नाशाय-आसार-वायुभि:
for cowshed destroying, with thunder storms
चेष्टितम् विहते यज्ञे
tried , on stopped the sacrifice,
मानिना तीव्र-मन्युना
the arrogant, and violent rage

O Lord! I, the arrogant, driven by violent rage, at the stopping of the sacrifice, had tried to destroy this cowshed with torrential rain and thunder storm.


त्वयेशानुगृहीतोऽस्मि ध्वस्तस्तम्भो वृथोद्यम: ।

ईश्वरं गुरुमात्मानं त्वामहं शरणं गत: ॥१३॥


त्वया-ईश-अनुगृहीत:-अस्मि
by You, O Lord! am favoured I
ध्वस्त-स्तम्भ: वृथा-उद्यम:
crushed is the pride, fruitless, the effort,
ईश्वरम् गुरुम्-आत्मानम्
to, The Almighty, Preceptor!
त्वाम्-अहम् शरणम् गत:
Yourself! I have refuge taken

O Lord! I am favoured by You, in that, my pride was crushed, and my efforts proved to be fruitless. O Almighty! O Preceptor! O My very self! In You I have taken refuge.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं संकीर्तित: कृष्णो मघोना भगवानमुम् ।

मेघगम्भीरया वाचा प्रहसन्निदमब्रवीत् ॥१४॥


एवम् संकीर्तित: कृष्ण:
thus, extolled Krishna,
मघोना भगवान्-अमुम्
by Indra, The Lord to him
मेघ-गम्भीरया वाचा
with cloud like deep voice
प्रहसन्-इदम्-अब्रवीत्
laughingly this said,…

Krishna, thus extolled by Indra, The Lord with a cloud like deep voice, laughingly said this to him,…


श्री भगवान्-उवाच -
The Lord said -
मया तेऽकारि मघवन् मखभङ्गोऽनुगृह्णता ।

मदनुस्मृतये नित्यं मत्तस्येन्द्रश्रिया भृशम् ॥१५॥


मया ते-अकारि मघवन्
by Me your was caused, O Indra!
मख-भङ्ग:-अनुगृह्णता
sacrifice destruction, for blessing
मत्-अनुस्मृतये नित्यम्
for my remembrance always
मत्तस्य-इन्द्र श्रिया भृशम्
intoxicated O Indra! by fortune

O Indra! you were very much intoxicated by the pride of fortune, so, the destruction of the sacrifice was caused by Me, to shower My blessings, so that you may always remember me.


मामैश्वर्यश्रीमदान्धो दण्डपाणिं न पश्यति ।

तं भ्रंशयामि सम्पद्भ्यो यस्य चेच्छाम्यनुग्रहम् ॥१६॥


माम्-ऐश्वर्य-श्री-मद-अन्ध:
Me, by fortune, wealth pride blinded,
दण्ड-पाणिम् न पश्यति
The (punishment) staff Wielder, does not see
तम् भ्रंशयामि सम्पद्भ्य:
him deport I, from affluence,
यस्य च-इच्छामि-अनुग्रहम्
on whom, and I will, to shower grace

The one who is blinded by the pride of wealth and power does not notice Me, The punishment staff Wielder, to such a person on whom I want to shower grace, I deport him from affluence.


गम्यतां शक्र भद्रं व: क्रियतां मेऽनुशासनम् ।

स्थीयतां स्वाधिकारेषु युक्तैर्व: स्तम्भवर्जितै: ॥१७॥


गम्यताम् शक्र भद्रम् व:
may go, O Indra! well be with you
क्रियताम् मे-अनुशासनम्
carry out My instructions
स्थीयताम् स्व-अधिकारेषु
stay in your office
युक्तै:-व: स्तम्भ-वर्जितै:
engaged (in duty be) you, of pride devoid of

O Indra! You may go now, well be with you. Carry out My instructions. Remain in your office, devoid of pride, be engaged in your duties.


अथाह सुरभि: कृष्णमभिवन्द्य मनस्विनी ।

स्वसन्तानैरुपामन्त्र्य गोपरूपिणमीश्वरम् ॥१८॥


अथ-आह सुरभि: कृष्णम्-
then, said, Surabhi, to Krishna,
अभिवन्द्य मनस्विनी
hailing (and addressing), the noble minded
स्व-सन्तानै:-उपामन्त्र्य
along with her progeny, addressing
गोप-रूपिणम्-ईश्वरम्
as cowherd disguised The Lord

Then, the noble minded Surabhi, along with her progeny, hailed Krishna, and addressing The Lord disguised as a cowherd, said to Him....


सुरभि: उवाच -
Surabhi said -
कृष्ण कृष्ण महायोगिन् विश्वात्मन् विश्वसम्भव ।

भवता लोकनाथेन सनाथा वयमच्युत ॥१९॥


कृष्ण कृष्ण महा-योगिन्
Krishna! O Krishna! O Great Yogi!
विश्व-आत्मन् विश्व-सम्भव
of the world The Soul! The Source of the universe
भवता लोक-नाथेन
by You O of the world The Protector
सनाथा वयम्-अच्युत
endowed with guardian we (are) O Immortal Lord!

'Krishna! O Krishna! O Great Yogi! O Soul of the world! O Source of the universe! O Protector of the world! Because of You we are endowed with a guardian, O Immortal Lord!


त्वं न: परमकं दैवं त्वं न इन्द्रो जगत्पते ।

भवाय भव गोविप्रदेवानां ये च साधव: ॥२०॥


त्वम् न: परमकम् दैवम्
You (are) our Supreme Deity
त्वम् न: इन्द्र: जगत्पते
You are our Ruler, Of the worlds' The Lord!
भवाय भव गो-विप्र-
for prosperity, do be, of the bovine race, Braahmanas,
देवानाम् ये च साधव:
gods, and those who are pious

You are The Supreme Deity. O Lord of the worlds! For the prosperity of the bovine race, the Braahmanas, gods and those who are pious, do be our Ruler.


इन्द्रं नस्त्वाभिषेक्ष्यामो ब्रह्मणा नोदिता वयम् ।

अवतीर्णॊऽसि विश्वात्मन् भूमेर्भारापनुत्तये ॥२१॥


इन्द्रम् न:-त्वा-अभिषेक्ष्याम:
king, we, You, will crown
ब्रह्मणा नोदिता वयम्
by Brahmaa directed are we
अवतीर्ण:-असि विश्वात्मन्
descended have You, O ! Of the worlds' The Soul!
भूमे:-भार-अपनुत्तये
of the earth's burden to alleviate

O Soul of the worlds! We will crown You as our king, as directed by Brahmaa. You have descended to alleviate the burden of the earth.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं कृष्णमुपामन्त्र्य सुरभि: पयसाऽऽत्मन: ।

जलैराकाशगङ्गाया ऐरावतकरोद्धृतै: ॥२२॥


एवम् कृष्णम्-उपामन्त्र्य
thus, Krishna, having prayed,
सुरभि: पयसा-आत्मन:
Surabhi, with milk own
जलै:-आकाश-गङ्गाया:
waters Aakaasha Ganga's
ऐरावत कर-उद्धृतै:
by Airaawata's trunk brought

Thus, Surabhi prayed to Krishna, and with the milk of her udder, and waters brought in the trunk by Airaawata from Aakaasha Gangaa,….


इन्द्र सुरर्षिभि: साकं नोदितो देवमातृभि: ।

अभ्यषिञ्चत दाशार्हं गोविन्द इति चाभ्यधात् ॥२३॥


इन्द्र: सुर-ऋषिभि: साकम्
Indra, the gods, and sages along with,
नोदित: देव-मातृभि:
directed by the gods and the mothers,
अभ्यषिञ्चत दाशार्ह
bathed, (Him) of Dasharatha's lineage
गोविन्द इति च-अभ्यधात्
'Govinda' thus and designated

Indra, along with the gods and the sages, and as directed by the gods and the mothers, bathed Him, of the line of Dasharatha, and designated Him 'Govinda,' thus.


तत्रागतास्तुम्बुरुनारदादयो गन्धर्वविद्याधरसिद्धचारणा: ।

जगुर्यशो लोकमलापहं हरेः सुराङ्गना: संननृतुर्मुदान्विता: ॥२४॥


तत्र-आगता:-तुम्बुरु-नारद-आदय:
there came Tumburu, Naarada and others
गन्धर्व-विद्याधर-सिद्ध-चारणा:
Gandharva, Vidyaadhara, Siddhas, Chaaranaas,
जगु:-यश: लोक-मल-अपहम् हरेः
sang (His) glory, of the worlds' evil destroyer Lord's
सुराङ्गना: संननृतु:-मुदान्विता:
the celestial dames danced beautifully, delight full of

There came the Gandharva, Vidyaadhara, Siddhas, Chaaranaas, and others, along with Tumburu, and Naarada, who sang The Lord's glory, which destroys the sins of the worlds, and the celestial dames, full of delight danced beautifully.


तं तुष्टुवुर्देवनिकायकेतवो व्यवाकिरंचाद्भुतपुष्पवृष्टिभि: ।

लोका: परां निर्वृतिमाप्नुवंस्त्रयो गावस्तदा गामनयन् पयोद्रुताम् ॥२५॥


तम् तुष्टुवु:-देव निकाय-केतव:
Him glorified, of the gods groups the foremost
व्यवाकिरन्-च-अद्भुत-पुष्प-वृष्टिभि:
showered and weird flowers showers,
लोका: पराम् निर्वृतिम्-आप्नुवन्-त्रय:
the worlds, the supreme joy derived, the three
गाव:-तदा गाम्-अनयन् पय:-द्रुताम्
cows, then, the earth rendered with milk drenched

The foremost of the groups of gods glorified Him, and rained showers of weird flowers. The three worlds derived ultimate joy. Then, the cows rendered the earth drenched with milk.


नानारसौघा: सरितो वृक्षा आसन् मधुस्रवा: ।

अकृष्टपच्यौषधयो गिरयोऽबिभ्रदुन्मणीन् ॥२६॥


नाना-रस-औघा: सरित:
various delicious juice flooded were the rivers
वृक्षा आसन् मधु-स्रवा:
trees became honey yielding
अकृष्ट-पच्य-औषधय:
unploughed, crops and herbs grew,
गिरय:-अबिभ्रद्-उन्मणीन्
mountains exhibited gems

The rivers were flooded with various delicious juices, the trees oozed honey, the crops and herbs were harvested without being ploughed, and the mountains' surfaces were covered with gems.


कृष्णेऽभिषिक्त एतानि सत्त्वानि कुरुनन्दन ।

निर्वैराण्यभवंस्तात क्रूराण्यपि निसर्गत: ॥२७॥


कृष्णे-अभिषिक्ते एतानि
Krishna being crowned, these
सत्त्वानि कुरुनन्दन
creatures, O Delight of the Kurus!
निर्वैराणि-अभवन्-तात
devoid of animosity became, O Dear!
क्रूराणि-अपि निसर्गत:
savage though by nature

O Delight of Kurus! When Krishna was crowned, O Dear! these creatures, who were savage by nature became devoid of animosity.


इति गोगोकुलपतिं गोविन्दमभिषिच्य स: ।

अनुज्ञातो ययौ शक्रो वृतो देवादिभिर्दिवम् ॥२८॥


इति गो-गोकुल-पतिम्
thus, of the cows and of the cowherd's the Ruler
गोविन्दम्-अभिषिच्य स:
Govinda crowned, he,
अनुज्ञात: ययौ शक्र: वृत:
permitted, went Indra, surrounded by
देव-आदिभि:-दिवम्
the gods and others to heaven

In this manner, he, having crowned the Ruler of the cows and the cowherds, as Govinda, Indra, taking His permission, went to the heaven surrounded by the gods and others.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराने पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे इन्द्रस्तुतिर्नाम सप्तविंश: अध्याय: ॥२७॥


Thus ends the twenty-seventh discourse entitled 'Indra extols Shree Krishna,' in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
